Pantry provides Christmas stockings for needy children

By Kathy Olivarez Santa Claus does not always arrive in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. There may or may not be a jolly old elf wearing a red and white suit working in Penitas on Christmas day when Christmas stockings are passed out in nearby colonias. But the true meaning of Christmas, the call to minister to the needy, abounds when the Penitas Food Pantry Christmas Caravan hits the road on Christmas morning. While there are a number of food pantries in the area that have weekly food distributions for needy families, the Penitas Food Pantry goes far beyond to serve the needs of the people in their area. Sponsored by the Penitas Baptist Church, the food pantry started about 15 years ago. Sharon Child, who is coordinator for the Penitas Food Pantry says there is so much need in the area that additional programs for distribution of shoes and clothing and baby items have been developed. Child said Penitas Food Pantry serves about 250 local families, including 600 to 700 children each month. Each family receives about 40 to 50 pounds of food for

their family. Child said the food they get is purchased from the Rio Grande Valley Food Pantry’s main distribution center in Pharr. The food distribution is a federal program because of the government contributions to it, but we do not get any federal funds to support the individual pantries, explained Child. Everything we buy is through donations from supporters. We get the food on Wednesday and bag it for distribution and the food is given out at the Penitas Baptist Church from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursdays. But at Christmas the Penitas Food Pantry strives to see that needy children in the area, not just those served by the pantry, receive a Christmas stocking made by volunteers and filled with goodies. Child said according to Ellie Cantu, who is coordinator for the stocking program, they will be giving away 5600 stockings this year. The stockings are filled with small trinkets and useful items such as underwear and socks, pencils, toothbrushes and See FOOD PANTRY pg. 3

El Dorado Acres makes Christmas stockings for Peñitas El Dorado Acres park residents are among those who make stockings for the Penitas Food Pantry. Over 300 stockings are being prepared. Residents collect items for the stockings all year long and put them in boxes in the rec room. As Christmas approaches they start assembling the stockings.

Brownsville Heritage Museum tells history of Brownsville

Stillman House Home of Brownsville Founder Charles Stillman

By Kathy Olivarez The Brownsville Heritage Museum, located at 1325 Washington Street, just a couple of streets over from the river, tells the story of the early days of Brownsville. The museum is adjacent to the home of Brownsville founder, Charles Stillman, who was an American merchant in Matamoros before the Mexican-American War started. Stillman moved to the north side of the river and kept trading, founding Brownsville in the process. Brownsville was a true Wild West town and many of the sketches of early Brownsville on display tell that story. The walls of one room are dedicated to the Mexican Revolution and the days of Pancho Villa and the bandits along the border. A glass case houses a sombrero like those worn by Mexican soldiers during the revolution. An old newspaper on display tells the story of a raid on Brownsville led by Villa and his men. Other newspapers on the wall show headlines about the war from papers all over the United States. But the showpiece of

that room is a large custom-built German omnibus with a mysterious history. There are no records of when it came into Mexico but there are records to show when it was moved to the United States. Speculation was that it was sent to Mexico to help rescue Germans in World War I. Some auto experts have likened it to a 1910 Rolls Royce. In other parts of the museum there is a blacksmith and wagon repair shop like those that served the city in early days. Look for old-fashioned scales and a medical kit used by a doctor during the early days. Another exhibit shows a large anchor from a schooner that sank in the treacherous waters of the Rio Grande in the 1860s during the Civil War. There is also information about the steamboats that plied the waters of the river at that time under Mexican flags taking Confederate cotton to market in Europe. There is a display of the different sizes of cannon balls used in the weapons of the era. Another gallery has a rotating exhibit See BROWNSVILLE pg. 31

From pg. 1 toothpaste, crayons and other small items that will easily fit in a stocking. Other items included are Beanie Babies stuffed animals and small toy cars that can be included in the stocking. “We want hard candies that are individually wrapped to put in stockings,” added Child when asked what other things might go in the stockings. “We do not want candies that will melt.” Everything we give away for Christmas is donated to the pantry,” Child’s added. Last year each child who came to the food pantry in the winter received a knitted hat. “In fact, last year we gave a hat to every child at Diaz-Villarreal Elementary, which is located in a low-income area,” Child said. “Many of the hats were donated by a group of Winter Texans called ‘The Happy Hookers,’ who are the wives of a group of men who like to jam. They take their knitting along with they go to a jam and knit hats for needy children. On Christmas morning a caravan of volunteers who drive up to 20 vehicles and pull two trailers leaves the church and drives out into nearby colonias where the stockings are distributed. Sweets, bread and fruit donated to the pantry is also given out. One of the trailers is filled with shoes and donated coats and other clothing.

up a child and place him on the flat bed of a truck to fit him for shoes. We quickly learned picking up the children was too hard for our backs so now we let the parents put the child on the truck to be fitted,” laughs Child. “The shoes may be new or slightly used. Adult’s shoes tend to be a bit more used.” Anything that is left over after the Christmas caravan is kept to be distributed as the need arises during the year. Child said many items given away by the Penitas Food Pantry are donated by Winter Texan parks in the area. “We could not do it without their help,” she states emphatically. Child has been active since she moved to the area. She lived in Alaska for 40 years. Her husband retired from the military in Alaska and they loved it so much they stayed until health concerns made them seek a warmer climate. Child was really bothered by the high level of poverty she saw when she arrived. Because she had lived 80 miles from the nearest grocery store and could only shop once a month, organizing her own pantry and buying in quantities was a skill she possessed. Based on her own personal experiences, starting and running a food pantry was an easy expansion of her shopping skills. Anyone who would like to get one of the stockings to be given away and fill it, See FOOD PANTRY pg. 31

Ace’s Barbecue is Good Eatin’! For some down home and downright delicious Texas barbecue try Ace’s Barbecue, in Mission. Owner Jose Aguilar has been in business for four years and his food is so good, people are requesting to open franchises in other locations. Aguilar’s food is prepared fresh in the store – from the potato salad and salad greens and coleslaw, to meats and catfish and shrimp. Sides such as rice, beans (charro style), and potato salad are prepared in the restaurant using family recipes. Aguilar uses choice meats or a higher grade when preparing his foods. His briskets and pork are smoked for 14 hours in a Southern Fried Smoker to get that wonderful flavor. The fish and shrimp are fresh and cooked to perfection. The newest item on his menu added just last week is chicken wings. He serves them with barbecue sauce, buffalo sauce and with lemon seasoning. They are first smoked and then flash fried for crispness. Very good! To test this location I took my husband who would rather eat barbecue than anything else and my grandson, “Hollow Leg.” For his entre, “Hollow Leg” chose “The Boss,” a combination brisket and sausage sandwich served with an abundance of French fries. As an appetizer he chose the

chicken wings. The Buffalo wings and “The Boss” disappeared quickly into the growing 17-year-old’s hollow leg and were pronounced delicious. My husband loves brisket and chose a platter with rice and potato salad. It too, disappeared quickly. I chose a “Monster Potato” filled with barbecued brisket. Half of it came home with me for lunch. Aguilar also presented us with a catfish plate, which was very tender and a sample of his shrimp. The catfish were just the way I like them, moist and tender, cooked to perfection. The shrimp were fresh and served with a panko breading. Also good. Since we were all stuffed, that plate was delivered to another grandson who thought it was a great surprise. Our last sample was a serving of peach cobbler, which Aguilar credits with the large number of customers on Mondays. Cobbler is complimentary on Mondays. It too, was delicious! Barbecue lovers will want to sample this feast, perhaps on a Friday evening when musical entertainment is provided. During Winter Texan season last year, Dale & Gale played. Currently, a musician who plays ambient jazz is entertaining. Regardless of when you go, you’ve gotta try Aces Barbecue, located at 2536 E. Griffin Parkway in Mission.
