Festival of Lights is Trolley-la-la-la fun time By Kathy Olivarez From the illuminated castle representing Argentina to the Chinese pagodas, the narrated trolley ride at the Hidalgo Festival of Lights is a great way to see the lights. The guides explain what each illumination represents and the ties between Hidalgo’s Festival Lights and many Bor-
derFest displays. Other displays such as “The Night Before Christmas Mice” and “Christmas Shrek” are made of three-dimensional characters that are easily recognized. Look for scenes such as the “Penguins of the North Pole” frolicking near the “Eskimo Family.”
Some of the lighted displays were provided by sponsors such as the “Happy Holiday Hershey,” a lighted display featuring Hershey’s kisses. Others represent fairy tales such as “Cinderella’s Castle” or “Peter Pan’s Ship” as he sails for Neverland. The “Mayan Pyramid” represents a past BorderFest theme featuring the treasures of Mexico. Look for large Christmas cards created by the schoolchildren of Hidalgo and placed at various locations throughout the displays. The competition is in three divisions including elementary, middle school and high school. The best Christmas cards are selected and put on display. Don’t miss the large illuminated display of elves frocking at the ice palace where they are slipping and sliding everywhere. Another illuminated display was “Santa’s Mailing Station,” a long mural of elf activity depicting how busy the North Pole gets in the days before Christmas. Don’t miss the “Reindeers’ Christmas ParHidalgo’s Festival of Lights features hundreds of lighted displays in three miles of ty.” And of course, there is the “Reason for “Winter Wonderland.” Nightly entertainment and trolley tours are also available for the Season,” an illuminated nativity scene visitors to enjoy. McAllen Holiday Parade draws 200,000 spectators By Kathy Olivarez and Luciano Guerra It was billed as McAllen’s biggest, brightest and most anticipated event of the holiday season and the largest illuminated holiday parade in Texas. The parade featured 40 illuminated and decorated floats, 17 helium-filled balloons, marching bands and celebrities. The first annual McAllen Holiday Parade brought a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade atmosphere to the Rio Grande Valley. And it did so much to the delight of the estimated 200,000 spectators that lined both sides of Bicentennial Boulevard and filled the east-side stands at McAllen’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. Sue Rouse of California, Missouri and a winter resident of Palm Gardens RV and Mobile Home Park in Harlingen had a front-row view of the parade as it proceeded directly in front of the stands at Veterans Memorial Stadium. When asked
about the McAllen Holiday Parade, Rouse said, “I thought it was great. As a homegrown parade I put this up with the Rose Bowl Parade, which I’ve been to four or five times. It is smaller, more hands-on and not as professional, but it was a really nice one. I also used to live outside of New York City so I’ve been to Macy’s Parade too.” Near the beginning of the parade was Santa, a giant balloon being managed by a group of teens in Santa hats. Next came the first band, playing “Jingle Bells.” Each of the several bands were impressive with horns lit up by Christmas lights and band members wearing Santa hats. Winnie the Pooh, holding his precious hunny pot, and several of his friends rode the next float, followed by those famous The Grinch was one of over 17 heliBudweiser Clydesdales pulling a float that um-filled balloons featured in Saturday evening’s McAllen Holiday Parade. Lindley Creek to perform Christmas shows
Catch a bit of the holiday spirit with Lindley Creek, a family band from Missouri that has been entertaining in the Rio Grande Valley for the past few years. John, Kathie, Jace and Katie Greer, known as Lindley Creek, are back this year with a Christmas show that is sure to delight anyone who loves Christmas music. Kathie says the show is a mixture of classic country, traditional Christmas and a rock ‘n’ roll medley of Christmas songs that is a lot of fun. There is a bit of comedy and a costume change thrown into the show as well. The children are growing up and have
both become proficient on many musical instruments. Jace, now 19, plays saxophone, fiddle, and a viola strung to sound like a cello that he calls a chin-cello. Katie, now 17, plays electric guitar, keyboard, fiddle and an octave mandolin. Kathie plays rhythm guitar, clarinet, and bass fiddle, while John plays upright bass and does the narration of the show. All members of the family have good voices and each one will be lead vocalist on three or four of the songs performed in the show. See LINDLEY CREEK pg. 17

Mission Museum Sister City exhibit now open
In honor of Mission’s Sister Cities, which are scattered throughout Mexico, Mission Historical Museum just opened an exhibit displaying native costumes from the states where the Sister Cities are located. A Sister City program joins cities throughout the world with cities in the United States. The cities try to help each other through cultural exchanges and studies. Currently, Mission has 14 Sister Cities, located in different Mexican states. Costumes now on display include China Poblana, named for a beloved slave girl, Mirra, brought to New Spain in the 1600’s. Mirra was captured by Portuguese slaves and taken to Cohin in the southern part of India. She escaped and took refuge in a Jesuit Mission and took the name Catarina de San Juan. From there she was to be taken to New Spain to be the servant of the Marquis. But when the ship landed in Acapulco, the merchant soldier sold her as a slave to a Publecan man for ten times the price the viceroy had promised. Catarina de San Juan took the custom of dress from her country, wrapping herself in a sari that covered her whole body. She also may have worn the Langa Voni, a blouse and petticoat, which many think gave rise to the China dress. After her owner died Catarina lived in a convent, where she was reported to have had visions of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. The original China Poblana costume consisted of a low-cut white blouse with fringe and embroidery of silk and beads in geometric and floral designs. The shirt or castor (beaver) was named for the material
it was made from. Beaver fur was used to undergarments for indigenous servants in the 1600’s. The shirt would be decorated with sequins, and camarones (shrimp) and embroidered with seeds and bugles (a type of bead) in the 1600’s. Enchilada stitching, which was crisscrossed with zig-zagged lacework, was used on the lower hem. Loops held the skirt and slips to the waste of the women who wore them; they may have been embroidered as well. Fine silk shawls or shawls decorated with bobbles would be worn to hide any cleavage sticking out of the blouse. Satin shoes would have been worn and possibly beads and other jewelry. While today’s China Poblana fashions may not be made of beaver or have shrimp in their designs, they do follow the colorful embroidered full skirt design with the white blouses and shawls used in the 19th century. In addition to the modern China Poblana costume other Mexican states where Mission has sister Cities will have their traditional costumes to be on display include Tamaulipas, Nuevo Lean, Coahuila, Jalisco and Quintaroo. Some of the states will have more than one display. The costume display is in the old Shary Building, which is the main museum building, located at 900 Doherty Avenue. The museum is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday the museum is closed. Admission is free. For information call (956) 580-8646.
Sunny Glen Children’s Home in San Benito has launched its second “Change for Children” campaign to help support the home for abused and neglected children. They have a goal of collecting $20,000 for the home. Ray Crowder, executive director for Sunny Glen Children’s Home said, “About 80 percent of the money used to support the children comes from donated dollars. The money collected will be used for paying electric bills for the cottages
where the children live, clothes and other items needed by the children. “I go to Winter Texan parks that invite me and I take cans for change,” explained Crowder. “I address residents at one of their weekly or bi-weekly meetings for five to ten minutes and build a pyramid of cans for residents to take home if they wish. Anyone who wants to take a can takes one but there is no pressure on anyone to contribute to the campaign if they do not wish to participate,” he said. The cans are about the size of a large soup can. Tony Ortiz, regional manager of Encore Properties said in an email, “Fundraisers are a vital part of simply keeping the doors open. Sunny Glen has a program that some of the Encore properties participate in – the ‘Change for Children’ program. If your property doesn’t already participate, please consider being part of this effort.” Crowder said, “By opening that door to the Encore RV Resorts, Mr. Ortiz and Encore residents will raise thousands of dolSee SUNNY GLEN pg. 06

Brownsville Heritage Museum has Latin American Nativity display
By Kathy Olivarez Brownsville Heritage Museum currently has an exhibit featuring Latin American nativity sets from private collections owned by three members of the local Pan American Round Table, Isabel Vezzetti, Marsha Betacourt, and Maria Enrique Yzaguirre. These nacientos or nativities give a look into the cultures of the countries they represent. Ayla Jaramillo, collections manager, pointed out the uniqueness of each of the nativities. The first exhibit was from Peru and in addition to the figures of the Holy Family and those who surrounded them, local animals such as monkeys, javelinas and turtles joined the donkeys and cattle at the manger scene. Instead of exotic herbs like frankincense, the monkeys brought bananas for the Christ child.
Another Amazon nativity scene had leopards and tigers joining the Holy Family. There were also several small retablo nativity scenes, which are placed in boxes with open covers for viewing. Moving to other exhibits, those from Mexico were more traditional, but the bright colors and flowers added a sense of happiness to the scene. According to Jaramillo, some of the Mexican exhibits were made by well-known Mexican artists. Moving around the room Jaramillo pointed out a special nativity exhibit featuring Native Americans. The nativity scene includes wolves and buffalo instead cows and sheep or donkeys. Instead of a manger there is a teepee. And Baby Jesus is on a papoose board. There are also nativities from South

Experience what it must have been like on that wondrous night. Walk down the streets of Bethlehem, visit the marketplace, see the potter, taste the bread, hear the angels, talk
with Mary and Joseph in the manger with the live nativity. Visitors can even pet a donkey or sheep. Everyone is welcome to join in and take part in this special night. Experience the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus. The event is free. Trinity Worship Center is located at 4801 N. Cage Blvd., Pharr.

America and a traditional one representing North America. The Nativity exhibit that opened on Dec. 2 will remain on display through mid-January. Other parts of the museum are dedicated to local Texas history, including scenes from a local bar, which has a real tap that can be used for museum receptions and special events. Other exhibits include a blacksmith shop and a frontier store. Another wall points out the countries that have influenced the area including Spain from 1519 to 1821, France from 1685 to 1762, Mexico from 1821 to 1845, the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1845, the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865 and the United States from 1845 to the present.

The Valley’s Winter Texans are a true blessing to those less fortunate.” The campaign runs from December through February. Those who participate can place the change they have left over after shopping or going out to eat in the cans. At the end of the campaign, the cans are collected and given to the Sunny Glen Children’s Home.
Another mural discusses the Mier Black Bean incident where Santa Anna decided that one in ten American prisoners be executed. Another looks at the steamboat era on the Rio Grande River. Other exhibits include the coming of trains and the effect of agriculture on the Valley. The Stillman House, which is adjacent to the museum belonged to Charles Stillman, the founder of Brownsville. It is currently decorated for a Victorian Christmas. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors over 55. Brownsville Heritage Museum located at 1335 E. Washington Street. Call (956) 541-5524 for information.
According to Crowder, at the end of the campaign the park that collects the most money per resident will be given a trophy. By basing it on the number of residents, it will be fairer than pitting small parks against large parks, explained Crowder. Crowder said last year Fun N Sun and a couple of smaller parks participated in giving change. Fun N Sun gave a total of $1600 to the program. This year, Crowder has cans in about 15 different Winter Texan parks, including most of the Encore Parks, Victoria Palms and others. Any park that would like to participate can call Sunny Glen Children’s Home at (956) 399-5356.

illuminated replica of a steamboat honoring the day when most traffic in the Rio Grande Valley moved by boat up and down the river. Another corner has people riding bicycles to draw attention to the hike and bike trail that runs through the park. In addition to the many lighted displays put up by the city, many residents along the route have decorated their homes. The three Ramon Ayala homes across from city hall are elaborately decorated. The only night the trolley will not run is on Wednesday, Dec. 17, when Ramon Ayala, a Grammy-award winning Tejano music star, leads the traditional Mexican Posada. As part of that celebration 10,000 Christmas gifts will be given out to children in need. Regardless of where they travel in the ride through the city’s three million lights, visitors will enjoy the displays of lights and three-dimensional figures that make up the Hidalgo Festival of Lights. The trolley rides will continue through Dec. 30. The trolley ride costs $5 per person. Tickets for the Dinner/Concert/Trolley Tour package is available for purchase at the Hidalgo City Hall for $12 per person. This package includes a roast beef dinner, musical entertainment and a narrated tour by trolley or train. This package is available only Dec. 2-16 and Dec. 18-21.
