It’s 6:37 a.m. and from beyond the entrance gate to Bentsen Grove Resort, the faint smell of something wonderful wafts through the darkness. A few cars are lined up in front of that gate, patiently waiting for 7 a.m. to arrive and the gate to open to the outside world so they can be among the first to partake of the wonderful morsels that await the early birds. Fortunately for those in the small but See DOUGHNUT pg. 6

Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Hole contest: Part 2
In last week’s edition of the Winter Texan Times, we announced a new golf competition. This is not a golf tournament, but it’s just as much fun to play. We are inviting all our Winter Texan duffers to try out several golf courses – perhaps ones they haven’t played before – then tell us which holes are their favorites. So what’s the contest? We have prepared an online ballot where you can vote for your favorite golf hole (or holes – up to ten choices) in the Rio Grande Valley. Just go to www.wintertexantimes.com to cast your vote. Everyone who votes will be entered in a drawing for prizes, such as free rounds of golf at local golf courses. Entry deadline is December 31, 2018. We will tally the votes and then announce the Top Ten Winter Texan Favorite Golf Holes. This contest is only for public golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley, and maybe a private course or two that allow non-members to play as well. Following is part two in our series See GOLF pg. 8

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is headquarters for World Birding Center
Hawk Tower, Bentsen State Park
Located southwest of Mission along the Rio Grande, the 797-acre Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is one of the most diverse wildlife habitats in the Rio Grande Valley, and has earned the distinction of being the World Birding Center Headquarters. Created by years and years of Rio Grande floods, the park is an alluvial plain that features native shrubs and trees and bushes brought down by the floods from other ecologies upriver to create a riparian woodland along the river. It is one of the few left along the river. Joined by the neighboring tract of land owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the World Birding Center encompasses almost 2000 acres that provides rich habitat to a great variety of regional and migrating birds. Birders will want to look for Valley favorites like the Green Jay, found no further north than the Rio Grande Valley. On a bird walk held Nov. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. approximately 44 species See BENTSEN pg. 2

From pg. 1 of birds were seen by those who took the walk. The walk included sightings of 24 rock pigeons and 15 Plain Chachalacas. Other species found in lesser numbers include American White Pelicans, Northern Mockingbirds, Gray Hawks, and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers. In some cases, only one was spotted like the buff-bellied hummingbird, a Wood Stork, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. The park provides a checklist of 198 species of birds that were spotted in the park in 2018 for visitors to look for. Many species of butterflies are also found in the park. Swallowtails, whites and sulphurs, Gossamer-winged butterflies, metalmarks and brush-footed butterflies are the most common. Other species often found include bluewings and skippers Approximately 217 different species have been spotted in the park. In recent years, studies have been done on the number of dragonfly species that are found in the park. To date, six major families with 76 different species have been identified in the park. Maria Montelongo, assistant office manager, said the newest amenity at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is the Dragonfly Resaca built in front of the headquarters complex. The pond is designed to attract all species of dragonflies to the park.
View of the Reseca at Sunset Amenities include a daily shuttle service to drop-off points within the park. There is a two-story Hawk Observation Tower with a ramp for accessibility. Two bird blinds in different locations allow observation of different species of birds. The park has 10 bird feeding stations where birds may be observed. There is a butterfly garden as well. Connecting everything are three miles
of hiking trails and five miles of paved roads. Private cars are not allowed on the roads, only shuttles. The trams run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. daily. Bicycles which can be rented $5 at the headquarters. A $10 deposit is required. Bicycles must be returned by 5 p.m. The headquarters has a Bird Exhibit Hall where examples of different species found in the park can be found. Be sure
and visit the gift shop. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The store is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is $5 per person. Senior discounts may apply. Or purchase the annual Texas State Parks Pass for unlimited admission to all Texas State Parks. Buy a Texas State Park Pass at any state park, or call (512) 389-8900 to order a pass. While many people simply want to hike the trails by themselves to observe the nature, Montelongo said guided bird walk are held on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. Look for nature tours on Monday at 9 a.m. Native plant walks are held on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. A 1.5-mile Resaca Vieja Nature Hike takes place every Friday at 8 a.m. While the trams run every day, there are talking tours at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. Fishermen can fish off the boat docks without a fishing license. Check with Texas Parks and Wildlife website at tpwd. texas.gov/fishboat/fish or call 1-800-7921112. Whether it is spotting new species of birds, butterflies or dragonflies or simply enjoying the fresh air and warmer weather to be experienced in South Texas winter, nature everyone will want to make several visits to Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park during their stay in the Rio Grande Valley.

Hidalgo Festival of Lights brings the ‘Holly Jolly’ to Christmas With cheerful and celebratory Christmas music like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”, “Jingle Bells” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” this year’s Hidalgo Festival of Lights is sure not to disappoint. Each holiday season, the city of Hidalgo transforms their small border town to a fantasyland for their yearly event. The illuminated event kicked off on November 30 with their 28th annual parade and lighting show and will continue through the rest of the month. Hidalgo, which sits along the Rio Grande River, converts the city square and local city parks to bring the public eye-catching, dazzling lighted display after display – all throughout the neighboring area, making it a night to remember with plenty of ooh’s and aah’s to get into the holiday spirit. Arlen and June Roesner, from Minnesota, along with their RV park neighbors Kay Coughenour, a native Iowa resident, and Jacie Lieske, also from Minnesota are Winter Texans who make their temporary home at Big Valley RV Park in Donna. For many Winter Texans, the Festival of Lights is on their list of things to do when they arrive and always make it point to attend the event. The foursome, which arrived around
5:30 in the evening, were there for the Dinner/Concert/Trolley Tour package, which includes a roast beef supper, a narrated trolley tour around the city with entertainment by various performers to end the night. “It’s beautiful and it’s changed each year too, the different themes they have. I was here last year, and it was different theme,” Coughenour said about the festival and the lighting displays. “This year, they have fairytales like “Green Eggs and Ham,” which I used to read to my kids all the time,” June said. The Christmas décor for this year features various themes, beginning within the city square; guests will enjoy a dose of Dr. Seuss, including the city of Whoville and its residents, and the meanest character of all – The Grinch – who is on display across from the city library, riding a sleigh. The Roesners said they visit the Festival of Lights each year they’ve been coming down to the Valley, and everything looks amazing. Visitors strolling around the square will discover some other favorites are included, like Shrek, Angry Birds, Toyland and a Star Wars theme called Intergalactic See JOLLY pg. 28

From pg. 1 growing line, the wait was short. Someone – good Samaritan of sorts - exiting the park opened the gate to let the hungry ones in. It was time for Bentsen Grove’s homemade doughnuts. Done every other Wednesday morning, several different varieties of doughnuts await those who are willing to wake early to treat themselves to one of the best breakfasts across the Rio Grande Valley. There are chocolate glazed, regular glazed, regular, blueberry and a few other options. The sweetness fills the air once inside the building where the pastries – the soft, crumbly bread, many covered in a glaze – await for their new “adoptees.” The doughnuts will go fast but the aroma will only slowly dissipate over a couple of hours, teasing the latecomers looking for a leftover. Upon entering the building, the “outsiders” quickly realize that living at that Winter Texan resort has its advantages – residents get first dibs and about a dozen of them sat around, enjoying the camaraderie, coffee and, of course, the doughnuts. Donna Stewart and Mary Messerli hold down the fort behind the counter. They will fill orders with what they have left as the line quickly forms. Many people have called in a pre-order to assure that they will have some of the freshly

so many lives. Jamie is a representative with Blue Sunday Child Abuse Prevention, an initiative that began in Harlingen and is now recognized annually the last Sunday in April at churches around the world. That is a day when churches take time in their service to pray for the victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. “We have a giving tree and Jamie came in last year and gave us 300 names of children who were in foster care and would need a Christmas gift,” Fanaselle said. “Kids in foster care deserve to be happy. Their days are filled with the unknown.” Then after Christmas, Jamie paid another visit to Fanaselle and others at Victoria Palms. “She had tears in her eyes when she told us all 300 kids received Christmas gifts,” Fanaselle said. “Now we have more than 300 names and it’s just amazing to watch the people at Victoria Palms – they get so excited.” The tags are spread all around the large decorated Christmas tree, like ornaments themselves. Listed is just a gender and age. Those interested in “adopting” a Blue Sunday child pick a tag and take it to the office. They are asked to donate nothing more than a simple gift. Many do so much more. “We had one couple come in here and they had two children,” Fanaselle said.

“They came in with two huge boxes, all wrapped up – I’m sure there were more than just one present in those boxes. “It’s just a good thing when you do something that helps somebody else – it makes you feel good.” Blue Sunday also has a Brighter Christmas Campaign, specifically focused on Christmas parties. They host three parties with nearly 2,500 attendees, including a foster teens Christmas, where they provide $20 gift cards for teens and a “Adopt a Kinship Care Family,” where dinner, gifts and trees are provided for non-offending family members who care for children without compensation. For information on Blue Sunday, visit www. bluesunday.org Fanaselle said it took no time at all to realize that the cause and the partnership were great. She also knew that the Victoria Palms residents would respond in a big way. They’ve responded even bigger already this year. “We have probably more than 300 names are already taken this year,” Fanaselle said Monday. “It’s something to watch the residents come in and look through the tags. They really want to help make a difference in others’ lives. “Every year this giving tree gets bigger and hearts seem to open up more. More people get involved. It really makes you feel good knowing that you’re helping someone have a little joy on Christmas,” she added.

From pg. 1 about some of our favorite holes in the Valley. Check them out and see how they stack up against your favorites. Shary Municipal Golf Course 2201 S. Mayberry St., Mission (956) 580-8770 Shary Municipal Golf Course is a 27hole golf course that is the number one tourist attraction for the City of Mission during the winter months (hint, hint – because of the loyal Winter Texan base). It is a well-laid out golf course that director
www.wintertexantimes.com
of golf Mario Flores is constantly working – and succeeding – in making it a premier course. The layout has its easy holes where you can grip it and rip it – but there are not too many of them. There are par 3s with distinct elevation changes, par 4s with sand and water that will deceptively come into play and shot-making holes all over the course. No. 7 is one of those shot-making holes that most golfers try to swing away, driving for the hole. It’s only 325 yards to the pin (on the straight and narrow), but you’re going to have to clear at least

270 feet over a ball-eating lake and miss the palm trees strategically placed in your way to stop you from going that way (even though many still try). Even a great shot will leave you in some rough, with sand protecting the blind approach to the green (so why even try). The best bet is to play it safe and leave yourself about 120 yards out into what is now a friendly uphill green where your ball will stick and give you a shot at birdie (but it does feel good to clear that water). No. 16 is only 395 yards and it’s straight ahead. But you better hit it down the middle or an easy birdie will turn into a difficult bogey. The fairway is narrow. There’s trouble to the right and sand protecting the green...especially, of course, to the right. Tony Butler Golf Course 2640 S M Street, Harlingen (956) 216-5970 There are golf courses you must play when you visit certain places. Sometimes it may be because of a certain design, and sometimes it’s to play a storied course like Pine Lakes in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Not only does that course have Rolls Royce golf carts and servers who hand out clam chowder during the winter months at the turn between 9 and 10 or mimosas during the warmer months, but it’s also the place where Sports Illustrated magazine was conceptualized on nothing but a napkin. The Valley has its own storied hole at Tony Butler. No. 19 has been a starting hole since back in 1929 when the PGA

would make a stop. Golfing greats such as Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan all made stops and started on this hole. The hole isn’t too long – just a 295yard straightaway, par 4 that today can be hit in one big swing. There is a little dip in front of the green to make it a little more difficult to land on the not-so-forgiving elevated green. The hole is not too hard, not too easy and slants at an angle. But if you’re into nostalgia, there’s not a better hole in South Texas. No. 9 is a 360-yard, par 4, dogleg left. The fairway is a rolling fairway, meaning if you can hit it far enough, there’s a part that slopes downward and you can gain 20 or more yards on your tee shot. You second shot will have to be more strategic, flying into a two-tiered green that’s rather tiny. According to Tony Butler Golf Pro Eddie Medlin “It’s a tough hole, but it’s cool.” Treasure Hills Golf Club 3009 N Augusta National Drive, Harlingen (956) 365-3100 For some reason, there are a lot of golf courses in Harlingen – it’s kind of strange actually – and sometimes Treasure Hills becomes the odd course out, but for the life of us we can’t understand why. As one of the most scenic courses in the Valley, with fairways that are designed to make you think through shots (yet, still just grip and rip for those brave folk), this See GOLF pg. 9

From pg. 8 may be the most underrated course in all South Texas. Hole No. 14 is a 405-yard, par4, and that’s from the back tees. There’s a reason for that – a lake protects the front of the green. There’s no bouncing the ball up the fairway to get on this green. You’ve got to clear the water and stick it. The drive is key because you’re going to want to leave yourself an approach shot where you can use your best club. Get your calculations correct and hit it down the middle and you’re looking at a shot for birdie.
www.wintertexantimes.com
Another nice par-4 on this course is hole No. 4. This one is a little bit longer – 450 to be exact. The hole doglegs slightly to the right meaning you can cut off as much as you think. The recommendation is to not fool around with the lake on the left side of the tee box and just hit it straight – hey, shouldn’t “hit it straight” be the best tip for every shot? If you get good length, you can fly in with a midiron and land on a decent-sized but tiered green. Cottonwood Creek Country Club 1001 S. Country Club. You may wonder why as you stand from the tee box. It just a straight shot – a 175-yard “punch” over a resaca that sits in front of it. “Be careful,” said one official from the club. “What people don’t know is that there’s a giant magnet in that resaca and more balls than you would think end up in there.” Now, we know that magnets don’t attract golf balls – but whatever is in that lake has been appealing to thousands of golf balls every year. In other words – take enough club or you will join the throngs of those who have dropped in. Cottonwood is filled with deceptive holes. No. 7 is the shortest hole on the course. It may also be the toughest to figure out. You either have to swing hard with a high-degree wedge or cut down on a regular wedge. The wind can come at you from any angle – it can even shift while your ball is in mid-flight. This hole gives more fits to just about anyone than many holes in the Valley combined.

Enjoy Life! Come to Denny’s!
-
Denny’s Restaurants offers a wide selection of menu items to tantalize the taste buds. You can -choose an exotic chicken dinner prepared in the style ,of Greek Mediterranean cuisine, a savory, tender steak, a delicious meatloaf meal, or a full Christmas Hdinner with turkey and dressing, e Denny’s has built its reputation serving a variety of meals designed to please every customer – from ,their awesome breakfasts that everybody loves, to , mouth-watering appetizers, sandwiches and salads. ’For those on special diets, Denny’s is there for you ttoo, serving gluten free items or Fit Fare for those wanting fewer calories. V On our recent visit to Denny’s, Hollow Leg – my ,always hungry grandson – and I sampled some of the knew items being offered at Denny’s. - “This is great!” Hollow Leg exclaimed as he took his first bite of the new Mediterranean Grilled Chick, ten, seasoned with Greek herbs & spices, topped with etomato bruschetta and feta cheese. For sides, he enjoyed the grilled squash, whole grain rice and garlic ,bread. I decided to sample the Turkey & Dressing Dinner now on the menu. It comes with three large slices of tender turkey and savory stuffing, topped with gravy to provide that perfect blend of holiday meal flavors. The dinner includes your choice of sides, such as garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli, dinner bread and, of course, cranberry sauce! This meal is available for takeout for the holidays and includes ample servings of your favorite holiday foods without all the hassle of cooking a big meal. Easy! We also recommend Denny’s Homestyle Meatloaf – a thick slice of their classic seasoned meatloaf, topped with a rich tomato sauce—mmm, good!
,
It is served with your choice of two sides and garlic bread. Steak lovers will want to try the new Garlic Peppercorn Sirloin. This is a hearty 8 oz. seasoned sirloin steak topped with a delicious garlic peppercorn butter sauce. The steak was tender and cooked to perfection. It also comes with a choice of two sides and dinner bread. I chose the garlic mashed potatoes and grilled squash. Very good! Everyone knows Denny’s is famous for their wonderful desserts and shakes. For dessert, we had the pumpkin milkshake and a slice of pecan pie. The pie Breakfast & Lunch was moist and tasty—just right! A great way to top off a wonderful meal. 7700 North 10th St. Stop by Denny’s today to enjoy your favorites Suite C from their wonderful selections for breakfast, lunch McAllen, TX 78504 or dinner. And enjoy a tasty dessert – or a milkshake (956) 661-9200 – or both! Enjoy life! Come on over to Denny’s – open 24 Hours: 7:00am - 3:00pm hours a day, every day. Every Day

Visit The Christmas House and share the Spirit of Christmas
Most families have a Christmas tradition – maybe decorating the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving weekend, or maybe eating tamales and Texas chili on Christmas Eve. Better yet, perhaps it is joining a Christmas Posada as we remember Mary and Joseph’s search for a place where Christ could be welcomed into the world. Nothing is better than the traditional hot chocolate and bunelos after your search for the welcoming inn. Certainly the Minten Sisters, who live near Falfurrias have a tradition. No doubt their tradition brings pleasure and fulfillment to them, but it also brings health and happiness to children with heart problems. Since 1976, they have turned their three-bedroom ranch home into a winter wonderland. In 1986, at the urging of a friend, they opened their home for public tours. Tours of The Christmas House are offered for a nominal fee to those who would like to be infused with the holiday spirit. However, tours of the home are by reservation only. Be advised – do not take a leisurely ride to the ranch house and expect to be admitted without the reservation. Go With Jo! Tours offers limited tours that always sell out. Each year, every room, two closets, and even a bathroom are decorated with a different theme. Over the years, these retired elementary school teachers have saved Nativity scenes, Santas, toys, glitter, tinsel, ornaments, and many other Christmas decorations to be used in their elaborate and themed decorations. They add to the Christmas décor with family heirlooms and antiques and weave their family’s traditions into the narrative. Their many Christmas collections, when not in use, are stored in seven storehouses located on their ranch. One is a 45-foot x 35-foot metal building built a number of years ago just for that purpose. Their home is now widely known as The Christmas House. Their Christmas store, called Santa’s Texas Workshop, is located adjacent to their home. It is the farm house their grandfather Minten built in 1926. The three sisters all grew up in that house. Tour guests shop there after the tours, and anyone can shop by appointment at any time of year. They benefit Driscoll Children’s Hospital cardiology services in several ways. One dollar out of each admission is donated to Driscoll’s; they also make their own contribution to the hospital; tour guests make donations on the antique pump organ; family and friends leave donations in a special container by
the guest book; and in the store when shoppers tell them to “Keep the change,” every penny is added to the “Organ Fund.” In the 33 years that the Minten Sisters have lived this tradition, they have been able to raise over $350,000 to help Driscoll Children’s Hospital treat children throughout South Texas who have heart problems. Of that amount, $90,000 are donations tour guests left on the antique pump organ since January 1993. What a tradition! Truly the Minten Sisters live their philosophy taken from Charles Dicken’s “Christmas Carol, “I honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” For information about tours of The Christmas House, contact Go With Jo! Tours & Travel at 956-423-1446 or 956-6641446 Or stop by their new location at 121 W. Tyler, Harlingen. For information about other tours, visit www.gowithjo.com.

Christmas. They also consider the Rio Grande Valley their second home and plan to return to enjoy the Festival of Lights for years to come. For those who have not had a chance to attend the festival, the Dinner/Concert/ Trolley Tour package is a must. It is offered in two time slots, starting off with dinner at 5:15 or 6:15 p.m., served under a large white tent near city hall. After dinner it’s off for a ride on “The Santa Express” trolley for a narrated tour of all the wonderful displays along the city streets. Then lastly, the tour participants get VIP seating to enjoy the evening’s entertainment provided by students from area schools. The entertainment features a variety of daily performances, such as mariachi, band, choir and folklorico groups. The stage is located directly in front of the city hall building. This not to miss package wraps up next Wednesday, December 19. For more information or to make reservations, call (956) 843-5311. Beginning Saturday, Dec. 15, the festival entertainment will feature a special four-day concert by Estudiantina de San Luis Potosi running through the Tuesday, Dec. 18. The concerts are set for 7 p.m. For those wanting to skip the dinner

You can still choose to take a 45-minute trolley tour of the other displays for only $5. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booths located on the city hall parking lot. The informational tour is narrated by Hidalgo high school students and in the three-sectional train ride takes guests throughout the city to explore the other Christmas decoration themes. One theme is “Christmas Around the World,” which includes displays representing the way Christmas is celebrated in other countries, such as Christmas in Argentina or Egypt. These displays are located at Hidalgo Memorial Park. The trolley ride then heads to McAllen Park, where the “Twelve Days of Christmas” are portrayed, based on the Christmas classic song. The trolley also trails off to a Texas scene located at the Hidalgo Fire Department and finally nature scenes around Old Hidalgo Pumphouse Museum and World Birding Center. On the narrated tour, guests will also learn a little of the history of Hidalgo. The festival also features an artisan market where visitors can do a little Christmas shopping for some unique gifts – and enjoy some of the food a beverage being sold.
