Port Isabel offers something for everyone

By Kathy Olivarez Whether you enjoy fishing, dining (preferably with a seafood appetite), shopping, exploring historical artifacts and sunken treasures, or simply taking a walk while enjoying the fresh sea breeze, Port Isabel is one place Valley visitors must see. Because of its mainland location near South Padre Island, Port Isabel has long been an important site in Texas. The site has been strategic since the days of the Karakawas, fierce Indians known for cannibalism, who used the narrow channel waterway between the island and the mainland to trap their enemies. After Texas became a part of the United States, the area was strategic for unloading soldiers assigned to the border. Fort Polk See PORT ISABEL pg. 3

Hidalgo Festival of Lights continues

Even though there are just a few more days to enjoy the entertainment at this year’s Hidalgo Festival of Lights, the 3 million Christmas lights on 550 fixtures will remain lit up until Dec. 31 for all to enjoy. From the lighted rocket ship seen at the entrance of Hidalgo City Hall where most festivities are centered, to old favorites that have been around for years, it is worth the time to drive the streets of Hidalgo. Better yet, park the car and take a stroll through this wonderland of Christmas adventure. Take in the beauty and creativity of the many lighted scenes on the grounds of city hall and along many of the small town’s streets. Hidalgo is a little town with a strong Christmas spirit it is not afraid to express. The rocket ship stands for the current theme, “Intergalactic Christmas.” But other old favorites are still around. Many have themes from around the world. One city park has the 12 Days of Christmas around its perimeter. Other areas have themes of Santa and his elves getting ready for the holiday, while other exhibits look at “the reason for the season,” with nativity scenes. From popular movie and

Brownsville Holiday Village adds new cottages

By Kathy Olivarez New cottages have been added to the ever-growing Brownsville Holiday Village located in Dean Porter Park. There are now 29 cottages on display to see this year. From the traditional replica of the Immaculate Conception Church and the historic Stillman House, each cottage

is uniquely decorated with a variety of themes. The new yellow school bus of “Elfamentary” is sure to be a hit with the younger crowd just as Golden Rule Elementary still reminds children of school. The town library where Mrs. Santa reads books to the children is a winner. Those with a sweet tooth may want to stop by the Gingerbread Bakery or the Sweet Tooth, which is sponsored by a group of dentists! (Trying to drum up a little business?) Cobbleheads Bar & Grill is another great stopping place for the hungry elves in the crowd. Or head to the General Store to buy bags of flour or fresh fruits and vegetables. There is a display by the Commemorative Air Force with elves in their flight uniforms getting ready to take off. Another cottage pays tribute to those Santa’s Workshop is one of nearly 30 brightly colored cottages now on display who serve in the military. And look for at the Brownsville Holiday Village located those brave fishermen who steer the Holiday Spirit Boat safely to shore. in Dean Porter Park next to the zoo.

For those who prefer outdoor activities, Santa’s Hunting and Fishing Lodge with its rustic theme is always a favorite. Other cottages include the historic Celaya House with its Tiffany crystal lamps in the windows and antique looking furniture. There is also a Celaya Carriage House next door where an old sleigh is waiting for the big day. The village now has a Santa’s Bank and another display of elf accountants busy keeping track of Santa’s expenditures. New to the display this year is the house of Juliette Gordon Lowe, of Savannah, Georgia, who founded the Girl Scouts. Look for the girls inside wearing scout uniforms and working on projects. Walking among the houses can be fun day or night. Admittedly the house are more fun at night when they area all lit up, but for those who do not enjoy driving at night, the park is open and the houses are accessible during the day. Don’t miss this fun addition to the Christmas season, now in it’s sixth year.

www.wttrgv.com PORT ISABEL

From pg. 1 was established here when it was referred to as Point Isabel, and a small gage train ran from Port Isabel to Brownsville to ferry soldiers and equipment back and forth from the port to the border. The Port Isabel Lighthouse was built in 1852 after sea captains complained the low-lying coastline made navigation difficult. It operated until 1905, when trains and other modes of transportation made shipping by water less important. Today, the lighthouse, which was restored in 2000, is part of the state park system; it is the smallest state park in Texas with only 0.9 acre. The birds-eye vantage point at the top of the Port Isabel Lighthouse provides great photo opportunities. It is one of 16 lighthouses once located along the Texas coastline, but it is the only one that is open for viewing. Visitors can climb to the top of the 72-foot tall tower for photographs, but cannot go out on the balcony. A replica of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage has been built on one corner of he site with interpretive history, including the history of the old Fort Polk on the site. Port Isabel Museums In addition to the lighthouse, visitors to Port Isabel may enjoy visiting the Port Isabel Historic Museum. It is located at 317 Railroad Avenue in the historic Champion building, which is a sea blue color with pictures of the fish painted on the front. The museum does an excellent job of telling the history of the Mexican American War. Because battles were fought in that area, there are a number of items – from cannon balls and Mexican coins to weapons – on display. At one time, Port Isabel was one of the biggest shrimping ports in the nation and there were many shrimp trawlers based in the city. There is a pictorial history of that era as well. The Treasures of the Gulf Museum houses items recovered from a 1554 Spanish shipwreck that occurred 30 miles off the coastline. It also houses the revolving exhibits the city displays. The lighthouse and the two museums today are collectively referred to as the Museums of Port Isabel and a combination ticket to visit each of them can be purchased at all three locations. Adult admission is $9 and the cost for seniors is $7. The lighthouse is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The other two museums are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Individual tickets for each location are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors. Port Isabel Shops To look for unusual decorative items and gifts with a nautical theme, shop any of several quaint little shops that face lighthouse square. While visiting Port Isabel, enjoy the view of the Laguna Madre from Pirate’s Landing, where you can also rent fishing poles and fish from the longest fishing pier in Texas. Or make reservations for a

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Port Isabel Lighthouse dolphin watch, or a deep sea fishing excursion. Many visitors enjoy a ride on the Black Dragon Pirate Boat anchored at the Pirates’ Landing Pier. This is especially fun if grandchildren are visiting. The Sea Life Center is on Pirate’s Plaza where Pirate’s Landing Restaurant is located with its great views of the Laguna Madre. The Center houses marine creatures for close examination. Owner Scarlet Colley is an avid marine scientist with a love for dolphins and all other sea creatures and is dedicated to their preservation. While there, say hello to their South African Spurred Legged Tortoise named Domino who roams the Center. He is about 10 years old and will grow to three times his current size. Admission is $3. There are a number of seafood restaurants in the city. Italian, Mexican, and fast food cuisine can also be found in this small tourist town. For shopping opportunities there is a row of buildings with a variety of art galleries and souvenir shops located on the back side of the lighthouse square for people looking for a little something to take home to remind them of their visit. While driving through the city, look for the dolphin murals in front of the buildings. They are different colors and designs. Whether it is a seafood dinner, a fishing excursion, a pirate boat trip or any other reason, be sure and enjoy this quaint little town along the Texas coast that has a rich history and many fun things to enjoy.

Myra Green, of Bible Alive Theater By Kathy Olivarez For a touching reminder of ‘the reason for the season,” Myra Green of Bible Alive Theater has been presenting, “Mary’s Christmas,” in a number of Winter Texan parks across the Rio Grande Valley. The Winter Texan Times caught the presentation at Oleander Acres, but there are still a number of locations Winter Texans can go to see the story of “Mary’s Christmas.” Green uses song and prose to tell the story and invites the audience to join in on the beloved Christmas carols that are a part of the show. The play starts with the Biblical account of Zachariah, who was a relative of Mary. He was told by an angel that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would have a child. Zachariah doubted the angel because of their advanced ages. As a result, the angel made him unable to speak until the baby arrived. The angel tells him that his son is to prepare the way for the coming of God’s son. When Elizabeth is six months pregnant, the angels tell her cousin Mary that she is to be the mother of the Son of God. She questions how it can happen, as she is a virgin, but the angel tells her all things are possible with God. She willingly accepts her fate as the mother of God’s son. The angel also tells her Elizabeth is pregnant. Mary goes to see Elizabeth and asked to stay with her for the next few months. As play continues, the son of Zachariah and Elizabeth is born. At that time, Zachariah has his speech restored and proclaims the name of his son to be John – the name given him by the angel. Zachariah praises God and tells the people John will pave the way for the Son of God who will provide salvation from their enemies. To enjoy the telling of the first Christ-

mas story, including the birth of the Christ child in a manger and the announcement of his birth to shepherds watching their flocks and the arrival of the Magi to worship the King of Kings, attend one of these presentations by Myra Green. “Mary’s Story” can be seen at Lakewood RV Park, Harlingen, Dec. 18; Restful Valley Ranch, Mission, Dec. 19; Rio Valley Estates, Dec. 20; Lemon Tree RV Inn, Mission, Dec. 21; Paradise Resort Estates, Dec. 24, 3 p.m.; Canyon lake RV Park, Mission, Dec. 24, 7 p.m.; Tropical Valley Acres, Mission, Dec. 27; Citrus Valley RV, Dec. 27, 6.30 p.m.; and McAllen Mobile Park, Jan. 3. All shows are at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Myra Green will be also leading a “God’s Worthy Women” conference featuring “Mary of Magdala” at Ranchero Village Park form 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 27. Reservations are required. And on March 22, an Easter musical, “Mary of Magdala,” will be presented at Alamo Country Club. The Greens have relocated to the Rio Grande Valley fulltime and have a number of shows that can be presented throughout the year. Senior Softball plans ‘World Series’ to start new season

By Kathy Olivarez While the baseball World Series ended just a few weeks ago, members of the Senior Texan Softball League are planning to start their season with a surprise! There will be “World Series” softball games between the “National League” and the “American League” to start the season for the first time this year. The teams will be made up of Winter Texans and local senior players. Just like in the baseball World Series, where each player has his name and team announced when he goes to bat, the senior players taking the field at the Senior Texan World Series will have their name and hometown announced when they step up to the plate. The World Series Softball Games will be played Dec. 30-31 and Jan. 2-3 at the McAllen Westside Park, located across from the McAllen Civic Center. It is located about one-fourth mile north of Expressway 83 on Ware Road. The games will start at approximately 9:30 a.m. Ed Martens, fondly referred to as the “Commissioner of Senior Texan Softball” said the games would be used as a way to attract attention to the Winter League at the beginning of the season

with the hopes of attracting new players. The Winter League, which starts Jan. 5, currently has 14 teams divided between competitive, recreational and leisure leagues. The Competitive League is made up of the most able-bodied men who are still able to hit and run. The Recreational League is made up of players who are getting a bit older, but still enjoy the game. They just cannot play as hard as they did 10 years ago, according to Martens. The Leisure League consists of many men still playing although many are over 80 years old and some over 90. They just enjoy the fun of getting out on the softball field remembering the old days, and getting a bit of exercise. Martens said there were a number of new players last year that made all three leagues stronger than they previously were. He hopes the “World Series Games” will attract more new players to the league. Last year, the players came from 21 states and all of the Canadian provinces. They stayed in 16 different RV parks across the Valley. There were also a few local retired residents who joined in on the fun in the Winter League. Each year, the games at the end of the

Winter League draw a crowd of softball fans who come out and root for their favorite teams. Anyone who wants to join other softball fans in the stands is welcome to come out and cheer. The games are free and there is ample parking. Lawn chairs are also welcome along the sidelines for those who have trouble climbing in the stands. Anyone who enjoyed playing baseball or softball in their younger years and who would like to get in on the action with the Senior Texan Softball League should call Ed Martens at 956581-2254.

Harlingen Concert Association announces new season

The Harlingen Concert Association has several offerings for the Winter Texan season. On Jan. 7, Svetlana Smolina, pianist will present a concert. Smolina’s performances have been called “mesmerizing” by the New York Times. On Jan. 21 a totally different type of music will be presented when the Presidio brass comes to town. The show is a wild ride of blazing technique and seamless precision, according to the Ponca City News in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Look for Savannah Jack on Friday, Feb. 19. These musicians are high-energy, featuring music from all genres with tight harmonies. The Young Irelanders will perform Thursday, March 3. This is a group filled with talent performing the traditions of Ireland. Stringfever will end the season on Monday, Mar. 14. The band combines charisma and talent for an unusually good show. All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 901 North Loop in Harlingen. Rio Grande Children’s Home needs assistance

When the Winter Texan Times called to see if the Rio Grande Children’s Home had any special needs for the children at Christmas, Monica Skrzypinksi, Gift Officer for RGCH, said there was a very special need she had no funds to cover.

Last summer there was a freak accident on Padre Island where an 8-yearold child was killed coming out of a restaurant when a corroded light post on the premises fell over on top of him and killed him. After reading about this tragic death, the Children’s Home decided to

Here are some holiday activities to help you enjoy the Christmas season. Ongoing-Jan 3 – Brownsville’s Holiday Village in Dean Porter Park, featuring 29 cottages of Santa’s helpers getting ready for the big holiday will be open daily. It will be lit from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., weekdays, and 6 p.m.to 11 p.m., weekends. Ongoing- Dec. 31 – Hidalgo’s Festival of Lights continues with dinners, entertainment, and 3 million lights in displays. Nightly entertainment through Dec. 20. Lights remain through holidays. Ongoing –Dec. 31 -- Mission Historical Museum features North Pole Village through Dec. 31 in Shary Building, 900 Doherty. Museum open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ongoing- Jan. 9 -- Brownville Historical Museum will host its annual Na-

cimientos exhibit featuring nativity scenes from Latin America. Dec. 19 – Snow Day at Conway Ave. Baptist Church in Mission begins at 10 a.m. Free admission. Located at Conway Ave. & FM 495. Dec. 19 – H-E-B Snow Day at Hidalgo Festival of Lights, beginning 9 a.m. Dec. 25 – Amigos de los Ninos Annual Fiesta will begin at 10 a.m. providing Christmas celebration and goodies to 3000 children in Mexico. Dec. 30 – Moscow Ballet “Great Russian Nutcracker,” McAllen Civic Auditorium. 7 p.m. tickets, $28 to $175. Dec. 31 – Fireworks on the beach at midnight on South Padre Island. Jan. 1 -- 18th Annual Polar Bear Dip at Clayton’s Bar and Grill. Registration at 10 a.m., Dip is at noon. Live music and best costume contest.

examine all of their lights posts for the safety of their children. They discovered the lights posts around their children’s playground were all corroded at the bottom and they faced the same possible danger as the child on the island if one of the poles fell on one of their children. As a result, they have cordoned off the playground and the children can no longer play there. Skrzypinski is unsure just how many poles need to be replaced but she does know the total cost of the project will be $19,000. And this is an unbudgeted project so she does not know where she will get the money. Currently, there are 20 children and they are expecting an addition four soon. In 2014, the home served as many as 70 children. Since it opened in 1964, RGCH has served thousands of children. Rio Grande Children’s Home serves as a home away from home for children who have been abused and neglected. Children come and typically stay from three months to a year. The longest time was eight years. They are not for adoption. If the family situation gets resolved, the children return home. RGCH does not work with the family; instead they are a safe haven for the children. The children come with many different needs but the most pervasive

25

problem is they need love. They need a healthy family situation and that is what RGCH provides. For some it is their first experience in a functional family where they are not being abused and they can simply be children. Skrzypinski said there is a great need for foster parents in the Rio Grande Valley and RGCH cannot take them all. “I wish we could,” she added, “I wish we had more foster parents.” While Winter Texans may not be in a position to foster children, they can volunteer as mentors. The children often need people to help them with their homework. Many of the children need help at school, because they may have been failing due to the home environment they come from.” Skrzypinski said if Winter Texans would be willing to contribute to the cost of replacing the poles to assure the safety of the children, it would be of far more benefit to the home than the giving of individual gifts for the children because it would benefit each and every child. In fact it would be a Christmas miracle. For more information call (956) 485-2112 or go online to buckner.org.

Red Hat Queens plan upcoming events The Red Hat Queens of the Valley met this week for lunch and to discuss upcoming events. The Festival of Tables and Rhinestone Cowgirl will be held in February. These two are major events where Winter Texan Red Hatters from all across the Valley are invited to participate. The Festival of Tables will be held Feb. 9 at the Nomad Shrine in Pharr. Jan Bergman is chairing the event. Each of the tables with be decorated with a different theme and ladies will be given tickets to sit at different tables as they arrive. This way they will meet Red Hat ladies from all of the Winter Texan communities in the Rio Grande Valley and have an opportunity to compare notes on what types of events they are having both in the Valley and with their groups back home. Johnny Ray Gomez will provide entertainment for the event. Final details on the Dazzling Dolphin’s Rhinestone Cowgirl event to be held at the Schlitterbahn on Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. have not yet been completed, but ladies are reminded they are supposed to wear denim – and of course – all of their diamonds. Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade deadline nears

Several Winter Texan RV parks participate in the Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges each year, and the Fiesta invites other parks to have a parade entry this year. The 79th annual Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges will kick off Saturday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. This year’s TCF theme is “Citrus, Cartoons & Comic Book Characters.” The deadline to turn in applications for new parade participants (those who did not have a parade entry last January) is Jan. 14, or until the maximum number of entries is reached. The $40 entry fee must be turned in with the application. Popular categories for Winter Texan RV park parade entries include floats, bicycles and decorated golf carts. The most prestigious float category is Valley Products. To be competitive in this category, the float must adhere to the parade theme and be decorated with at least two-thirds citrus or other products grown in the Rio Grande Valley. First place Sweepstakes Award receives $1000, second place receives $500, and third place $350. Some Winter Texan RV parks, such as Bentsen Grove Resort and Split Rail RV Park have competed exceptionally well in this category in the past. There are two special float categories for RV parks. Winter Texan I category is for parks with less than 199 spaces and Winter Texan II is for parks with 200 or

more spaces. Floats entered in the Winter Texan categories will be judged on workmanship, adherence to theme and originality. Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place. Volunteers needed for Christmas Bird Count

The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center is calling all bird watchers to help with the “Christmas Bird Count.” Be part of the yearly count on Friday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 7 p.m., which is part of this month’s Friday Night with a Naturalist presentation. Javier de Leon, Estero Llano Grande State Park Superintendent will be the presenter. De Leon has worked as a naturalist/interpreter at several Rio Grande Valley nature sites including the EWBC. Javier’s personal mission is to help others become aware of the Rio Grande Valley’s plants and animals so that future generations can enjoy seeing the same wildlife their ancestors did.

The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center is located at 714 S. Raul Longoria Road in the Edinburg Municipal Park. To RSVP or for more information, call (956) 381-9922 or visit www. edinburgwbc.org.

Birding center presents ‘Wintering Sparrows’

Sparrows are often a daunting family of birds for birders, because of their often-confusing abundance of physical characteristics that have earned them the term “little brown jobs.” In this month’s Adult Birding Series presentation, Javi Gonzalez, Naturalist Educator at ECW/WBC, will introduce the sparrow species that spend the winter in the lower Rio Grande Valley. He will also offer tips to simplify their identification in the field, and clues as to where to look for them. “Wintering Sparrows” is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center. This

presentation is sure to give Winter Texans the confidence to exclaim the species names of these baffling birds and have fun doing it. “Wintering Sparrows” is the second installment of the EWBC’s “Adult Birding Series.” The fee for this program is $2 for members and $4 for non-members. Space is limited, so please call ahead to reserve a spot. The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center is located at 714 Raul Longoria Road inside the Edinburg Municipal Park. For additional information, call (956) 381-9922.

Parrots at the Park Thursday Talk at Quinta Mazatlan Would you like to learn more about one of the most sought after birds at Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center? Visit Quinta Mazatlan on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. to hear about the Green Parakeets and Red-crowned Parrots from Dr. Karl Berg, from the University of Texas-Brownsville. Dr. Karl Berg has spent many years researching the parrots and parrotlets of South America, and will share his experiences as the featured speaker at Quinta Mazatlan. These raucous birds are easy on the eyes with their bright colors and crazy antics. They are often seen poking

their heads out of nesting cavities in trees, snacking on palm seeds, hanging upside down from wires, or preening each other on branches. They arrive in colorful flocks that can be heard across the park. The Nature Speaker Series takes place on Thursday evenings. The program fee is $5 per person and no advance reservation is required. Quinta Mazatlan is located 600 Sunset in McAllen, one block south of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street. For more information contact Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 681-3370.

Ladies of Winter Haven RV Resort love life in Brownsville

By Kathy Olivarez While in Brownsville recently I went to lunch at the Vermillion, an old favorite restaurant that has been around since 1934. I enjoy it because the food is good and the pictures on the walls tell a story of what Brownsville was like in the early days. While dining I could not help but notice a group a ladies who were out having a good time, enjoying lunch. Since they looked like Winter Texans I ventured over to say hello. I found the ladies were from Winter Haven RV Resort and were celebrating the birthdays of Joe Anna Eirich and Carol Forrester. They shared with me some of the things they enjoy about Brownsville. They said they enjoy buying fresh food at the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market held in front of the Fine Arts Museum, going out to eat, and just having a good time. They also enjoy going to the new Cascade Park built by Cameron County across from their resort on Old Port Isabel Road because it is full of picnicking, walking and

hiking opportunities. But their favorite thing is going across the border in Matamoros to Garcia’s, which is within walking distance of the bridge. “You can get anything you need there because they have restaurants and bars, a pharmacy, and a souvenir shop that has all kinds of things. They even have a driver, who for a fee, will drive you to other locations in Matamoros, if you want to shop elsewhere,” the ladies told me. “It’s very safe because there are border guards within a short distance, so we do not feel any kind of threat when we go,” said Marilyn Williams. Sheri Banning said she enjoys riding around the resort on her golf cart and looking at the Christmas lights and looking for someone to enjoy “Happy Hour” with her. Marcia Edwin is a birder who enjoys seeing the different birds around Brownsville and going to the different World Birding Centers around the area. Fran Hardin enjoys the close proximity to South Padre Island and the activities there.

Carol Forrester enjoys the warm south Texas weather and the social life at the park. Anne Gilmer enjoys the different activities available in Dean Porter Park in the Mitte Cultural District along with being able to shop for fresh organic food on weekends. When asked what their husbands did for entertainment I was told they enjoy golfing, jamming and having races with their remote-controlled yachts. When asked where they like to eat, the ladies said there are many socials in

their park and they enjoy coming to the Vermillion because the food is reasonable and very good. Most of the ladies liked the Pancho Villa plate, which consisted of two enchiladas and two tacos with rice and beans. The light Pancho Villa offers one enchilada and one taco. The ladies represented several states, including Missouri, Tennessee, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Alabama. And, of course, there was a Canadian from Saskatchewan in the group. It looks like the Brownsville area has a lot to offer for Winter Texans to enjoy.
