Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 32, No. 10 © 2018 www.wintertexantimes.com Wednesday, December 19, 2018 Ranchero Village enjoys sharing with local school children

Christmas is best when it’s shared with others. There’s a lot of sharing at Ranchero Village Resort in Weslaco. For the past five years, children from both Margo and Memorial elementary schools have performed a Christmas show for the residents of Ranchero as a way of showing their appreciation for all that the residents do for the children – both at Christmas and throughout the year. “I don’t know exactly how it started,” said Jan Murphy, a Ranchero Village resident for the past 17 years and native of Grand Rapids, Mich. “I remember talking to someone and seeing the kids perform at school and asked if they would take kids to the park and one thing led to another and there it is. Now they come and we have so much fun. After all, we are away from all our grandkids.” Kindergarten through third-grade students from Margo Elementary lined up on boosters that they brought specifically for the show and each class sang three traditional Christmas songs, often encouraging those in attendance to sing along. The audience was more than willing to participate. Memorial Elementary followed with a floor show. The kinder children played the music and the others danced with the director showing the way. The next group of children were decked out as toy See RANCHERO VILLAGE pg. 2

Winter Texans Favorite Golf Hole: Part 3

This is the final installment of a threepart series highlighting some of our favorite holes to play at the Rio Grande Valley’s golf courses. With this series we are inviting Winter Texan golfers to tell us which holes are their favorites – and while you’re at it, maybe win some cool prizes. Your choice holes can be from any of the Valley’s public golf courses, or country clubs that are open to the public. You can vote for your favorites either online at www.wintertexantimes.com, or use the ballot printed in today’s edition of the paper. We are looking for the Top Ten Winter Texan Favorite Golf Holes, so you can choose up to ten holes as your favorites, ranking them 1 to 10. Everyone who votes will be entered in a drawing for prizes, such as free rounds of golf at local golf courses. Entry deadline is December 31, 2018. Here is part two in our series about some of our favorite holes. Check them out and see how they stack up against yours. See GOLF pg. 8

by Mark Moreno and Jim Brunson Winter Texan shuffleboard in the Rio Grande Valley is still just as vibrant and active as the seniors who enjoy the sport. The RGV Shuffleboard Association holds a series of 20 shuffleboard tournaments scheduled at Valley resorts this season. The tournament series began Nov. 6 and continues weekly through mid-March. Last week’s tournament was held Tuesday through Thursday, Dec. 11-13, based out of Texas Trails RV Resort in Pharr. Jim VandeLeygraaf, an “expert” level shuffler from Countryside RV & MH Park in Donna, explained, there are so many shufflers participating in each tournament that some of the shufflers are assigned to compete at other resorts nearby. Having so many Valley resorts with a dozen or more shuffleboard courts makes it easier to run many games simultaneously to expedite play without a lot of wait time. “We got beat in our third game,” said VandeLeygraaf, speaking of his mixed doubles teams from Countryside RV & MH Park competing in the tournament See TEXAS TRAILS pg. 4

Many do both. “They’ll come and read to our firstand second-graders,” Arriaga said. “It’s a one-on-one program and it’s amazing that the children they read to improve their reading levels. They have joined in our programs and different activities and they donate so much – from things for hygiene to school supplies.” Santa Claus has also been visiting from Ranchero Village (not the North Pole) for what Arriaga estimates as the past 15 years. Santa will even show up twice – once to give out presents the day school ends and once to have pictures taken with ole’ St. Nick. “They also donate so many Christmas gifts and take them to families after school is out,” Arriaga said. “I always say that’s what the schools are there for, to partner with the community and for the community to partner with the schools. It’s a perfect relationship. I can’t say enough about what Ranchero Village does for us as well as a couple other parks nearby. Our kids then go sing their hearts out in gratitude for how much they’ve been given. “It just speaks volumes about our community and there community. It’s a wonderful thing.”

Mission Historical Museum is accepting entries for its “Turning of the Quilts” program to be offered Jan. 18. The museum is looking for antique, vintage, or just plain interesting quilts for this program. The quilts are presented stacked on a bed. As each quilt is shown, it is turned down to reveal the next quilt, until all have been presented. A knowledgeable presenter will talk about each quilt as it is shown. The museum will be accepting vintage quilts through Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. Quilts can be brought in Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Please provide as much information as you can about your quilt, such as who made it, how old is it, how you got it, etc. Viewers would

also be interested in any stories associated with the quilt. All quilts will be handled by trained and knowledgeable individuals. You may bring more than one. “Turning of the Quilts” will be presented as part of the Awards Ceremony at the Thirteenth Annual Mission Quilt Show at the Mission Historical Museum at 2 p.m. on Jan. 18. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off some of your treasures, and maybe learn a thing or two about them as well. The Mission Quilt Show is sponsored by the Winter Texan Times. Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty and 200 E. Tom Landry, in Mission, Texas. Admission is free. For more information, call the Museum at 956-580-8646.

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wintertexantimes.com www.wttrgv.com ments. Out of 56 teams competing in the TEXAS TRAILS tournament, the Puls finished third place From pg. 1 last week. He explained that if a team loses its first match, they are assigned to the Consolation Bracket, where they compete for trophies in that bracket. If they lose again, they are eliminated from the tournament. Teams that win their first game go into the Main Bracket but if they lose in that bracket, they do not go on to compete in the Consolation Bracket; they are eliminated with just one loss. The first day of the tournament was for amateurs, who compete separately from the “experts.” To move up to the expert level, a shuffler has to earn 50 points in two years, and once they become experts, they will always play in the expert level, VandeLeygraaf, explained. The experts competed on Wednesday, with the top four teams in both brackets – Consolation Bracket and Main Bracket – playing in the finals on Thursday to determine first, second, third and fourth place teams in each bracket. The weather was perfect for the tournament with temperatures mostly in the 70s and beautiful clear, blue skies and a light breeze. Many of the shufflers have been playing for several years or more, like Jim and Eileen Puls, of Canada. They have made Ranchero Village Mobile Home Park in Weslaco their winter home for the past 11 years, and they play in all the tourna-

in the Consolation Bracket. “It’s a really good social sport and we’ve made a lot of friends over the years. It’s really for the fun and if you win, you win and if you lose, you lose,” Jim said. “It’s just to come out to have fun and enjoy the day.” There were an estimated 15-20 resorts participating in the tournament last week with participants coming from senior resorts in Mission to Weslaco and Mercedes. “It’s an excellent sport and good for us seniors because it keeps us moving around,” Jim said. “Depending on the day, sometimes you win like crazy, while other days you can’t make a shot.” It was a pretty good day for Jim and Eileen, as they took third place in the Consolation Bracket out of a field of 56 teams. First place team in the same bracket was Brian and Gina Bissillion. Second place went to Pete and Eileen Hildebrand. Fourth place team was Garth Bakke and Barb Brezinski. Taking first place in the Main Event were Rodney and Deb Baal, of Snow to Sun; second place went to Felix and Linda Jannes. Dick and Kathy Lamphere took third place; and Dick and Verna Ham, fourth. Lindley Creek sings ‘Let It Snow’…somewhere else!

Lindley Creek, one of the more popular groups that entertains in the Rio Grande Valley, starts their annual Christmas show with an old Christmas favorite, “Let it Snow” but with an aside saying “somewhere else.” Lindley Creek, also known as the Greer family - John, Kathie, Jase and Katie, have been entertaining in the Rio Grande Valley for nine years. For five of those years they have come early to do a Christmas show for their fans. They come from Buffalo, Missouri. The name Lindley Creek was taken from a creek that runs behind John’s father’s farm. He has fond memories for driving the tractor through the fields and getting hot. He would stop, take a dip in the creek and chase a few frogs, then go back and plow some more. Lindley Creek chooses a variety of Christmas song to perform including “Good Ole Time Christmas,” and “Beautiful star of Bethlehem.” Jase, who has become quite showman, kicks his “suitcase drum” in rhythm while singing or playing his violin. Of course, Jase had to perform Mom’s favorite Christmas song, “Silver Bells” and invite the audience to sing along. Then Katie, who is now lead singer with her strong

soprano voice, did a rendition of, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” that brought applause from the audience. The band turned three favorite songs, “Joy to the World,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Deck the halls with Boughs of Holly” into a medley. Kathie reminiscences about growing up in Hollister, Missouri where they gathered with neighbors for old time music parties at Christmas where folks brought their instruments and got together to play and sing to celebrate the holiday. Of course, there was always an abundance of Christmas treats to share. Jase reminds the audience of the most popular Christmas song of all time, “White Christmas.” Then he gave a commercial for the redwood signs that he makes. The most popular one has a picture of a camper on it, with the words, “Home is where you park it.” After intermission, they had a special surprise for the audience, and we don’t want to spoil the surprise, so you’ll just have to go to see their Christmas Show to find out what it was. Following their surprise, Kathie sang a bluegrass rendition of “Oh Holy Night.”

Ralph Kuster Entertains the Valley

Ralph Kuster is well known in South Texas for his variety of acts, his wide-ranging vocals and for the energy that he puts into his shows. But if he had decided never to get into the entertainment business you may be surprised to know what other profession he has been involved in. As a member of the PGA of Canada, Kuster spent seven years as the Director of Golf Instruction at the renowned Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. It is one of the oldest clubs in the Canada and celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2010. Over his career Kuster has worked with 22 boys and girls who went on to earn golf scholarships in the U.S. to advance their educational and

playing careers. His love, however, for performing and singing led him to leave the golf business in 2005 until 2012 as he pursued a career in music which led him to seven years as a one-man show in Branson, Missouri. While his early career may have been centered on golf, Kuster said that he was always singing something in his car, in his room or anytime and anywhere he had a chance. “I performed two numbers at a Kiwanis Music Festival when I was 10 years and then was a disc jockey at my high school and sang at most of our school assemblies. My friends would always tell me that I should be in radio and music – I thought they were just being nice because I was one of the few who had no problem standing on stage and singing my heart out” he said. Kuster started his professional career in music, as he puts it “a little later in life,” performing in front of a live audience for the first time in 2006. Finally, he decided to chase his dream, and has found some success, and plenty of joy. Except for a few famous entertainers, he interprets each song and shares his love of the song with his own voice for as he says, “It is truly impossible to mimic correctly George Jones or Frank Sinatra.”

His library of songs that he can perform is second to none – it’s like a library in the traditional sense with an amazing variety of music as he has over 600 songs in his repertoire. Kuster remembers going to a karaoke night once in Nashville back in 2006 when he was first starting. “This was at a very large popular American Legion with excellent vocalists,” he recalls. He performed “I May Never Get to Heaven” by Conway Twitty and “The American Trilogy,” by Elvis. “There was a large group there and they cheered and seemed to really enjoy the two songs that I performed especially ‘The American Trilogy’,” Kuster said. “One of them came up to me and said, ‘You should go to Branson.’ ‘Nashville,’ he said, ‘is a songwriter’s town – you are more of a vocalist.’ I not only didn’t have any idea where Branson was but I had no idea who the person was. A guy came over to me and said. ‘Do you know who that was?’ It ended up being a member of Toby Keith’s band.” Kuster ended up in Branson. He created his own show and rented his own theater and paid for all the expenses of running a show. In 2012, he was encouraged to attend the RGV Showcase in Texas and has been

in the Rio Grande Valley since. Kuster has nine two-hour shows that he performs and each show has a video presentation for every song in the show. His shows include: Country Classics; Frank Sinatra and Friends; Elvis, Neil and Friends; A Tribute to Broadway and the Movies; a Valentine’s Day Special; Timeless Treasures, a Mardi Gras Special; and St. Patrick’s Irish Show, a New Year’s Eve Show and Dance and his Christmas in the RGV show. GOLF

WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com

From pg. 1 Alamo Country Club 438 Country Club Dr, Alamo (956) 787-0910 Self-proclaimed as the best kept secret in South Texas, the Alamo Country Club golf course may truly be just that. Hole No. 5 is a challenging par 3 that forces all golfers to fly the green to avoid a well-kept pond that guards it. In fact, it surrounds about 70 percent of the green. In addition to the water, a large bunker creates issues for anyone who avoids the water but misses the green. There is also a 50foot palm tree that stands between the tee and the green. You must either hit over it or around it AND avoid the water and sand to land safely on this extremely sloped green. No. 1 at Alamo CC is a short par 4 with out of bounds on both sides. You have to fly the water and avoid the palm trees that line the right side of the fairway. The right half of the green is guarded by three large palm trees that affect many approaching shots. Being too aggressive on this hole can create a large starting score for your day. Avoid the obstacles, however, and you could have an easy birdie. Ebony Hills 300 W. Palm Dr. Edinburg (956) 292-2144 Another course that is considered not too challenging, Ebony Hills and the South Texas wind will make the easy, tough and the tough impossible. No. 2 could be any of those – easy, tough or impossible. The 530-yard, par 4 gives the golfer a straightaway shot toward a green that is protected by a hazard in front. A good golfer (or one who thinks he’s good) can get on the green with two good shots. However, when the wind comes in

from the northwest, if you’re not hitting long and straight, a 6 on the scorecard is a good score – write it down and run with it. No. 6 is a long par 4 where accuracy is a big plus. You can be a 300-yard hitter but with out of bounds on the left and trees lining the right, you’re going to have to hit it as straight as possible down a narrow fairway. Even then, your approach shot is onto a narrow green. Stick it and you’ll be rewarded; go left or right and you’ll be wondering why they told you the course “wasn’t too challenging” after dealing with this hole and No. 2 – you’re just a third of the way done. Raymondville Municipal Golf Course 13839 Emma Ross Road, Raymondville (956) 690-4068 The first thing that they’ll tell you at this municipal golf course is that it’s flat and not challenging. Prod the people in the pro shop a little more and you start realizing that even “flat and not challenging” has its challenges. No. 9 is a par3 that plays 140 yards but make sure to pick a long enough club because it’s all over water. The green slants back to front, which brings more challenges. You want to land short (but beware the water) but landing long is the safe shot, until you realize you are putting downhill (again, beware the water). No. 6 is a little par 5 that plays just about 500 yards. In front of the green is a little dip and hill. This is one’s target, especially for all those hitters who think they can hit the green in two, which is totally possible but not the easiest. If you’re going to go for it in two, you will probably have to use a club with a little less loft, meaning the ball is going to go into the green screaming hot. From pg. 8 lands on the green, chances are you’ll find it in the parking lot behind the green. However, if you can put that approach into the dip in front, you could get a great kick and a shot at eagle. Brownsville Golf Center 1800 W. San Marcelo Blvd., Brownsville 956-541-2582 So you’ve just finished 17 holes in the wind and heat of South Texas. You have a good round going. You’re a little tired

www.wintertexantimes.com from the long day but there’s just one hole to play, but this hole can either turn a bad round into a good one or turn a good round into throwing the scorecard away a soon as you get back to the pro shop. You ‘ll need your mental toughness for this 580-yard, par 5 that plays over 600 yards if the wind decides to come out. The hole is a dogleg left and the key is how much you can draw around the dogleg. Hit your tee shot too long and straight, and you’re in trouble. Don’t make it to the 200 yard mark from the tee, you’re in trouble. Draw it nicely and you could leave yourself 250 yards out for a long, but possible second shot into the green. Oh yeah, and there’s water on the left and houses on the right. According to the scorecard, No. 5 – a 113-yard, par-3 – is the second easiest hole on the course. Maybe it means just the most easily deceptive. There’s water all along the left side from tee to green, there are houses on the right, and if you hit it about 100 yards into a green the size of some counties, you will be fine – except now you have to putt. The large inviting green might make it easy to just hit a ball casually, knowing that a football field is waiting to bring in your ball. The problem is that there’s a little ridge along the right side and the ball will roll back down. If you land too far from the pin, because you were hypnotized by the size of the green, a four-putt is not unlikely and a three-putt is almost definite. Key here – go for the flag.

person said, this hole comes down to one thing – you either make it, or you don’t. And many, many people don’t. It’s also a very scenic hole on a well-kept golf course. Before you even think about taking a swing on this dogleg left, ask someone who has played the course where to aim your tee shot. Of course, there’s a pond that gets in the way and some shrub, but hidden behind that shrub, maybe just 130 yards away, is a welcoming green. So instead of hitting straight, cut the corner, get on the green and go for birdie. The alternative isn’t anywhere near as pretty.

Village Executive Golf Course Hole No. 5 Village Executive Golf Course 3300 S International Blvd, Weslaco (956) 968-6516 First of all, the full name of this course on their Facebook page is Village Executive Golf Course and Taqueria del Golf. We’re just putting it out there, but the name alone bring along enough curiosity to take a drive and see what this course has to offer. No. 5 is a 147-yard, par 3 that plays closer to 140. You have to clear water (and a bird statue in the middle – something you don’t see just anywhere) to get a shot at birdie, which is possible. But, as one

Valley International Country Club 301 McFadden, Brownsville (956) 548-9199 Valley International Country Club used to get lost in the mix but over the past few years, more and more golfers are realizing that this course is a pleasant one to play, with a layout that makes the most of water hazards (our favorite type of hazards) and fairways are either bordered or dissected by a resaca. No. 10 is a 148-yard, par 3 and one of the few that doesn’t have too much in terms of hazards, except for water on the right hand side. The fairway is narrow but the green is welcoming so if you hit it straight, you don’t have to worry about the narrow (we said it again for emphasis) fairway. After all, it’s just 148 – how tough See GOLF pg. 11

can it be? No. 3 is another version of No. 10, but there’s no water and the fairway is a little more open if you end up short. It starts narrow but it widens at the green, giving you some room for error. The green is decent size but don’t let that fool you; the pin is usually tucked away and a two-putt is a good ending, even though the way the hole is set up, you should expect a birdie – but don’t we expect that on every hole we play? Howling Trails Golf Course 1910 Hole In One Dr., Palmview (956) 323-2165 Two par-5s highlight this vastly improving course that is run by the La Joya school district. No. 6, a 543-yard, par 5 is the signature hole and is guarded by a pond right in front. Most golfers will need to lay up at a comfortable distance to make sure

www.wintertexantimes.com they get a good approach into the green and a shot at and up-and-down birdie. Others (most people probably) will just go for it on their second shot. A long iron or hybrid could get you there and the greens will hold the shot, unless of course it’s a screeching line drive. If you end up laying up, take advantage of the right side, where the fairway wraps around. Don’t be fooled – it’s not an island green, the water just sucks in errant shots at a very high rate. If you’re a golfer who can’t hit the ball straight and keeps going from one side of the fairway to the other, this may be a good hole for you – as long as you start out by hitting left. This 532-yard par-5 has a wooded area along the right side from the tee box. This will open up the fairway for an approach shot, which you now need to keep on the right side because water goes along the left side for the remainder. After that it’s a simple pitch and one putt for birdie. (We sure made that sound easy, huh?)

El Maná Cuisine is New on the Scene

“Nothing in my restaurant is frozen. I buy good quality fresh meats and produce every day for my meals,” says El Maná Cuisine owner Juanita Martinez. The restaurant is quickly becoming a favorite among Winter Texans and locals alike. Martinez serves variety of Mexican foods along with selections of American foods that are every popular. The food is well prepared. None of the food is greasy. The specialty of the house is the Chicken Fried Steak or Chicken Fried Chicken served with a delicious yellow gravy. “People have followed me here from other restaurants where I have worked because they like the gravy,” she says proudly. I took a bite of the Chicken Fried Steak and gravy my co-worker ordered. The meat was very tender! “What makes it yellow?” I asked. Juanita gave me a suspicious look that turned into a sly smile. “It is a secret” she said. “I don’t tell anyone what the secret ingredient is.” Tasting again, I suggested, “Turmeric? Saffron? Egg yolks? She just smiled. “I do not give away my secret ingredient!” Juanita serves a full range of Mexican foods ranging from deluxe nachos, panchos, guacamole salad, chicken flautas, quesadillas and several kinds of enchiladas. She serves many of your American food favorites including T-bone steak, hamburger steaks, chicken,

It’s going to be a bit merrier this Christmas for a lot of elementary school children in Alamo thanks to a community effort organized by the Alamo Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center. This annual toy drive event draws in Winter Texans from several parks, local businesses and some City of Alamo departments, according to Ana Cano, chamber office manager. Hundreds of toys are being gathered for distribution to six local elementary schools, Zeferino Farias, Santos Livas, Maria R. Garza, John McKeever, Captain D. Salinas and Augusto Guerra Elementary schools. One of the major donors for a number of years is Winter Ranch Ministries members. Once again, they provided a $700 check to allow chamber officials to purchase toys. Sue Hobson, chairperson of the church at the park, presented the latest check for the shopping spree to benefit the children. “Our church has a “Good Samaritan” fund,” she said, “And 100 percent of those donated funds go back into the community.” Hobson, originally from Iowa and at Winter Ranch for five seasons, said the church of some 200 plus members in their park is very giving. just one part of that. Members last week took 300 Christmas stockings stuffed with candy, crayons, pencils, hygiene items, a toy and a stuffed animal to the Arise organization in Alamo, which works with migrant families in a variety of ways. She added, one woman had knitted 300 hats that were also included. Other parks involved in gathering toys for Alamo school kids include Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, which has been doing it since the drives began 10 years ago. Carrol Moering, who originated the toy drive as chamber manager at the time, has promoted it each year in her own park. “The community here at Royal Palms has considered it a privilege to participate in this program and plan to continue in the years to come,” Moering said. “We hope our part will bless some needy kids this year.” Alamo Rec-Veh Park is another group that has been involved in the drive since its inception a decade ago. Winter Texans remain a major contributor to the park’s drives, providing a lot of toys over the years. Activity Director Linda Miller pushes the toy drive, announcing it at the weekly meetings of the tenants and carrying it in the park’s weekly newsletter.

They have had two large boxes in the recreation hall for placing toys. The past couple of years, Winter Texan Jack Ahler has used the wood shop to make at least two dozen small wooden cars and trucks. Among the businesses participating is Gallego & Trevino Bookkeeping and Tax Service. The firm has a box in their lobby with employees bringing in toys and other items. Many of the toys in the past three years are provided by owner Molly Gallego, who loves to see “the smiles of the children when they receive a little gift.” She added, “We try to help as much as we can.” Boxes for toys were at other businesses including Advance America, Alamo Fitness Center, and Farmers Insurance. In addition, there were drop-off locations at the Alamo Police and Fire Departments and the Sergeant Fernando Memorial Library. This season marked the third year for all Alamo city hall employees to purchase toys for children, according to Melissa Gonzalez, staff grant writer. She said she sends out a memo to all the staff about the toy drive and they respond generously. That’s in addition to city hall being a drop-off location for donations. The drive effort was summed up by Moering, who said, “Sometimes it takes a community working together to not only raise our children to be good citizens, but to try and embrace all of them with a little touch of love, especially at Christmas time.”
