Harlingen’s newest mural, dedicated just this week, is located at the intersection of Harrison Ave. and the railroad tracks in Downtown Harlingen.
Harlingen: The City of Fun
By Kathy Olivarez Harlingen, once called Six-shooter Junction because of its Wild West atmosphere, was one of the most important cities in the Valley in pioneer days, because the railroad came from the north and then branched out in an east-west direction. Since there were no roads, all inland traffic for people and goods came by train to Harlingen and, likewise, anyone wanting to travel north by train had to go through Harlingen. During the early days, when Harlingen was the hub for all agricultural products being shipped north, the city earned the title “Ice House Capital of Texas,” because it took many ice houses to produce the

amount of ice needed to keep the produce from wilting on its way north. Over 100 years later, Harlingen is still a leader in the Valley, but in a much different way. The growing city’s strategic location continues to play an important role is the local economy as Harlingen’s close proximity to Northern Mexico has attracted major businesses such as United Healthcare, Dish Network, Penske Logistics, United Launch Alliance, Panasonic, Cardone Industries and many others. While such economic strength is important to the residents and businesses, there is definitely much about Harlingen See HARLINGEN pg. 3
Jammin’ of Jackson St. with Vance Greek is a popular pastime for Winter Texans visiting Downtown Harlingen.
By Roda Grubb Two things happened to Deborah Rose which changed the direction of her life, besides the fact that she was a make-up child for a rough period of her parents’ life and considers herself part of their “second” family. “My dad always said, ‘Our train had two cabooses!’” laughed retired Brigadier General Deborah (Deb) Rose. “It took them 11 years for me to come along.” Growing up, and still living, on a century farm her grandfather started over 100 years ago south of Topeka, Kansas, Deb thinks of herself as a first child because of the many years between her older siblings and her. She was thrilled when 18 months later, she did get a younger sister. Since her mother was a PK (preacher’s kid), Deb was sent off to McPherson College, a Brethren college, where she and her brother partied themselves out of school after two semester attempts at classes. Simply overwhelmed with the workload of her music degree, she decided to follow her brother into the military. He chose the Army and she, the Air Force. It was 1969. She went to the recruiter and was turned away for being 10 pounds overweight. This was her first life-changing event. “I really believe God had a path for me and that wasn’t the path I should take at that point in time.” Her vividly blue-green eyes sparkled as she told her story. “If I had joined then as an enlisted person, my career would have been very limited.” Instead of joining the Air Force, she married an airman named Joe in December of 1969, and recently celebrated their 46th anniversary. Joe was a part-time fireman for the Kansas Air National Guard when one of their planes crashed, killing a young father, a man whose family attended the Rose’s church. “I saw what his wife went through, losing her husband so unexpectedly and not having a means of providing for her child. It was an epiphany and I decided I needed to take some action.” Deb talks of her second major life-changing event. After prayerfully asking for guidance, she entered the degree program of nursing at Washburn University. With her degree, she went back to the Air Force and this
Ret. Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose time they took her with a direct commission into the nurses’ corps in 1983. “I went in as a Second Lieutenant and worked at the Topeka VA for 14 years before going full-time with the 190th Air Refueling Wing in the Kansas International Guard.” Deb’s goal was to get noticed, to make a name for herself so leadership would know she was competent and willing to take on more responsibility. This she did with the 190th that had KC135, air refueling tankers. “Our unit was called up for Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I served 30 days during the month of October of 1990 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in a tent hospital. Upon returning, our medical group was activated to serve as backfill for Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, when their medical people were sent to Saudi Arabia.” In 1994, she was asked if she would be willing to leave the nurse corps to become a line officer and take command of the services flight, which does the food service, rooms and morale welfare/recreation. “Morale was low under the commander they had and they needed a change in leadership. The Mission Support Group and Wing Commanders believed I could make that change. We did and turned it around See DEBORAH ROSE pg. 4

The monument honoring the marines who fought the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles of the war, is located on the grounds of Marine Military Academy, at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd. The monument depicts the raising of the American Flag on Feb. 23,1945. It stands over 100 feet high and weighs 130 tons. It was given to MMA in 1981. and I became a Service Flight Commander with 20 to 25 people.” She calmly told the story. All during her career, one of her goals was to help women believe in themselves, to show by example how using opportunities could help advance their career and took Madeline Albright’s quote, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women,” to heart. “I think that’s a very powerful statement because my worst example of women leadership was in the field of nursing. I always think sometimes the worst example can help you become a better leader because of your experiences and the fact you don’t ever want anyone else to experience that,” she said vehemently. Continuing to climb the ladder, she next became a Logistics Squadron Commander with close to 100 people, then Mission Support Group Commander with around 1,000 people. By 2007 she was promoted to General Officer, Brigadier General, finally reaching her goal to become the first female Brigadier General in the Kansas National Guard. “All I wanted was to have the same opportunity that anybody else would have,” those shining eyes of hers were like diamonds. “I really have always credited my promotions to the people that I worked with because it wasn’t really me. It was . . . us! It really was about how we did this together!” Retired since 2011, outranking her Colonel husband, Deb gets to practice the music she loves, play golf and loves her time with her Texas family. Always taking her strong belief in God with her, Deb’s belief grows stronger still. “I believe that God put me in this place to be able to tell my story, to help other people, for women to know what can be possible in their lives,” she said. “I feel I have to honor my rank I had achieved because if I dishonored it, I felt I would not only dishonor the rank but also dishonor women and I never want to dishonor women. I want women to understand that this is something we can achieve!”

The City of Murals Harlingen features many larger-thanlife murals to tell its history in the downtown area. From the tropical birds that make Harlingen part of the eco-tourism of Texas, to the historic Route 77 that ran through Harlingen, and old downtown theater where many movies such as “Gone With the Wind” were first shown in the Valley. The murals tell a story of Harlingen’s history. Look for a mural honoring Bill Haley and His Comets. Haley, who is considered the Grandfather of Rock ‘n’ Roll, grew up in Harlingen. The history of Mexico and Mankind is a mural honoring Hispanic traditions. Jackson Street District Historic Jackson Street, which was the shopping hub of the Valley long before there were even paved streets, is still active. Filled with quaint one-of-a kind restaurants and shops, art galleries and other places of business, the downtown area keeps the history of Harlingen alive with Saturday guided walking tours and SEG tours so people can learn more about the city. Tours are held each Saturday, but the first Saturday of the month is when Jackson Street Market Days is held. During Market Days, vendors fill several blocks with unusual goods, foods and arts and crafts for sale. There is always live entertainment. Golf Galore! There are five golf courses in Harlingen. Tony Butler Golf Course, Treasure Hills Golf Club, Harlingen City Golf Course and Cottonwood Creek Country Club Course and Stuart Place Country Club. Some courses are private, but have

60,000 omelets and still flippin’
Dave Roundtree is back at Victoria Palms for his seventh season of flipping omelets filled with tomatoes, black olives, ham, bacon, jalapenos, spinach, mushrooms, green peppers and onions as the customers request. And, of course, topped before folding with lots of cheddar cheese. Just watching the show as he flips the omelets can be fun. Just don’t go away thinking his movements can easily be repeated at home. After preparing 60,000 omelets, Dave has had lots of practice, and he has it down to a science. Perfection! While Dave’s omelets are a big draw for customers who come not only from Victoria Palms, but also from parks in the surrounding area for breakfast, there are a number of other items on their Sunday buffet that attract visitors. Large waffles are made upon request and can be topped with strawberry or pineapple topping and whipped cream. Or they can be topped with both, half and half. Syrup is also available. They also offer a full breakfast bar with your choice of scrambled eggs -- plain or with bacon, ham or sausage. There are hash browns or diced potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage patties, corned beef hash, fried pork rinds in salsa, and eggs benedict. Look for oatmeal with all kinds of accompaniments, toast, biscuits, sausage gravy
and a full fruit bar with grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, grapefruit, oranges and yogurt. All of these items are available for $10.49 for the breakfast buffet. Chef Mark Arevelo said customers who want something special on the Sunday buffet such as silver dollar pancakes or a baked egg casserole can call one day in advance and request the special items. Victoria Palms is open for breakfast Sunday, and Tuesday through Friday. Dinner buffets include burgers on Tuesdays, meatloaf or liver and onions on Wednesdays, create-your-ownpasta on Thursdays, and a fish fry on Fridays. The dining room was filled with Winter Texans who were enjoying breakfast. Jan Brom of Magnolia Park said she came on Sundays for the wonderful omelets that were so reasonably priced. Daily lunch specials are $6.49. Phyllis Smithson of Iowa and Alamo Rec-Veh said, “I love the waffles. They are so good with strawberry topping!” When asked what his favorite thing about the Victoria Palms Sunday buffet was, Joe Stinchfield of Wisconsin answered, “ I like the whole (darn) thing! Everything is good!” That about sums it up!

Harlingen dedicates new mural
Harlingen officials held a ribbon-cutting event for a new mural entitled “From Farm to Market through Harlingen on Dec. 22, at 11:30 a.m. The new mural features historic images of agricultural processing in the Rio Grande Valley, including crops in the field, loading and unloading of produce into trucks and wagons, and icing of produce in railroad cars in Downtown Harlingen. These were painted in sepia tones directly on the wall. The new mural was painted by artist Brett Oberthaler, of Weslaco, based on historic photos. The event took take place in the public parking lot at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and the railroad tracks in Downtown Harlingen. The mural, on the west
wall of the building at 201 W. Van Buren, faces this parking lot. Harlingen has a long mural tradition, with works from the 1940s and 50s still on display. Today, more than 20 largerthan-life-size works brighten the streets of Downtown Harlingen and decorate walls inside businesses. Most portray aspects of Valley history and culture. This new mural was designed to illustrate how Harlingen served as an important center of agricultural processing in the early 20th century. For more information contact Cheryl LaBerge, Downtown Manager, at (956) 216-4910 or cheryllaberge@myharlingen. us.

Harlingen once known as ‘Ice Capital of Texas’
By Kathy Olivarez While it may seem odd that a city located in deep South Texas would be known as the ‘Ice Capital of Texas,’ Ice once made the city of Harlingen famous because there were more icehouses in the city than in any other city in Texas. Harlingen founder Lon C. Hill viewed Harlingen as a crossroads for the Valley, so he and Uriah Lott brought the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexican Railroad south to Harlingen, (or Six-shooter Junction) as it was once known. The men working the rail line called it Rattlesnake Junction in honor of the high numbers of rattlesnakes they dealt with while building the railroad. The area was a true frontier, with a bit of a Wild West reputation that started after the Mexican Revolution due to the Bandit wars along the border. Lott decided to name the city Harlingen after Van Harlingen, a town in The Netherlands where his grandmother lived as a child. The first train arrived in 1904 before there was even a paved road leading to the Valley. From Harlingen, another rail line was run east to Brownsville, and west to Fordyce, which was just west of Mission. With the train came the excur-
sioners, mostly farmers from the Midwest who wanted larger farms with less expensive land than they could find at home. Trains brought Midwesterners to locations all over the Valley to establish farms and orchards creating the agricultural empire that land developers envisioned. Many bought land and stayed to make their dreams come true. Once the railroad reached Harlingen, another line stretching across the Valley was designed to open the land along the river, facilitating growth of agriculture in the Valley. Irrigation systems finally had the technology needed to move water up out of the river to water to land that was fertile but dry. Lott and Hill decided agricultural products from the newly developing agricultural industry along the river would be brought to Harlingen to be shipped north. In the days before refrigerated boxcars, ice was used to keep the produce cool as it traveled north. A large dock was built in the Harlingen train yard on a level higher than the tops of the rail cars. There produce was packed in the train. Workers shoveled large chunks of ice on top of the produce See ICE CAPITAL pg. 27

From pg. 24 crates to keep the products inside cool. With the large amount of produce coming from farms and orchards throughout the Valley, it took a lot of ice to keep the produce cool. Hence Harlingen because known as the “Ice Capital” of Texas. As a result of the rail traffic, young Harlingen prospered during the early part of the 20th century. In addition to being the hub for agricultural shipments, it became a prosperous town. Jackson Street was lined with stores, some with national names like Woolworths. There were banks, feed and seed stores, mercantile stores, grocery stores and movie theaters located in the Jackson Street business district even before the streets were paved. While the Depression years in Harlingen were tough like most American cities, in the 1940s and 50s Harlingen boomed with the outbreak of World War II and the establishment of Harlingen Air Gunnery School. During the Korean War, the base was reactivated as Harlingen Air Force Base, Over 10,0000 navigators were trained in Harlingen. When the base was closed in 1962, one-third of the homes in town were vacated and the town’s economy plunged downward. Things improved in thee 1970s and 1980s. Then the coming of the North American Free Trade Agreement in the 1990s brought an industrial explosion and along with that the development of a regional medical center adding to the

city’s prospering economy. Several years ago, the city started commissioning colorful murals on the sides of historic downtown area buildings, reflecting the history of Harlingen. From the old theater on Jackson Street where movies such as “Gone with the Wind” made their debut, to other historic buildings with murals such as the one depicting the coming of State Hwy. 77 to the Valley, these murals tell a colorful story of Harlingen’s history. Cheryl LaBerge, director of the Harlingen Downtown Association, said a new mural honoring Harlingen’s agriculture history would be unveiled and dedicated soon. Today, the revitalization of historic Jackson Street has added a new dimension to the city. Restaurants and tea rooms, quaint shops, art galleries and stores make shopping Jackson Street fun, while historic tours educate people about the early days of this vital city located at the crossroads of the Valley. LaBerge invites everyone to come to Harlingen and enjoy the activities on Jackson Street, beginning with the Christmas Parade on Dec. 4 to the holiday shopping adventures planned by merchants, the jams with Vance Greek at the Rail Museum, and the first Saturday Marketplaces.

Bluebonnet RV Park has gospel jams
By Kathy Olivarez Gospel jams are traditions in many parks and Bluebonnet RV Park in Palmview is one of them. The jams run from 6 to 8 p.m. with a break for cake and coffee at 7 p.m. Old songs like “Me and Jesus Have a Good Thing Going,” are heard as the band plays. On the evening the Winter Texan Times visited, the stage band consisted of Kelly Lyons on guitar, Harry Webster playing the walking bass invented in Hawaii, Eric Schalge and Judy Dickie on keyboard and Doug Brenny on gui-
tar. Ila Walker played a Q chord keyboard and sang, “He Washed My Eyes with Tears.” She was followed by an instrumental from the band, “It Is No Secret What God Can Do.” Harry Webster played his walking bass and sang “Away in a Manger” in honor of Christmas, accompanied by Gerald Wallis on guitar. Emily Cate finished the first half with “If I Could Just Touch,” while the See BLUEBONNET pg. 29

Lilah Johnson, Betty Johnson and Judy Laux were behind the cake counter, serving folks during the break.
