More players invited to join in as Senior Softball launches new season
Ed Martens was laid up in a hospital bed in Manila, capital of the Philippines, with some type of blood poisoning. His Air Force baseball team had just played the final regular-season game and he was excited to rejoin them the following week for the first round of the playoffs. Those hopes were dashed as soon as his hospital doctor walked into his room to give him an update. “The guys wanted me to play and I was in the hospital for 10 days and missed that one Sunday,” Martens said. “The doctor, though, refused to let me go.” That was more than 55 years ago and today Martens is still involved in the diamond, not as a player but for the past 25 years as the coordinator of the South Texas Senior Texan Softball League. Today, the League has players from 27 RV and mobile home parks, 23 states and most of the Canadian provinces. The league began playing in Mission – at three different locations – before moving
Life is but a dream on the Riverside Dreamer
The Riverside Dreamer pontoon boat ride is a popular destination for locals, tourists and especially Winter Texans, according to Johnny Hart, captain and owner of the 55-foot pontoon boat as well as the Riverside Club where the Dreamer docks on the banks of the Rio Grande. “It’s very popular with the Winter Texans,” Captain Johnny said as he prepared to pilot a group of 35 passengers on the one-hour boat tour down the Rio Grande. “Some of them come 8-10 times in a season and every time a relative or a friend comes down, they go again. “Today we’ll be taking the tour down to the Anzalduas Dam. Then we’ll be on the Mexican side and the U.S. side of the river and we’ll point out features as we go up and down the river. We’ll give a little history of [some of the sites along] the river; we’ll point out some of the birds and the wildlife…. And we’ll be touring some of the border wall and the Border Patrol boats and the activity that’s out here on See RIVERSIDE pg. 8
Passengers on the river tour aboard the Riverside Dreamer saw many interesting scenes along the banks of the Rio Grande, including this new private recreational area on the Mexico side of the river.

The McAllen Holiday Parade was a community event with many schools and organizations participating such as this group of Santa’s Helpers engaging the crowd at the football stadium before the start of a spectacular parade.
The city of McAllen hosted the Rio Grande Valley’s most spectacular Christmas parade in early December, and members from the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard were happy to be away from the snow and cold of Washington, D.C. Anthony Gonzalez, the voice of the animated star Coco, was excited to visit a city “that shows so much excitement and patriotism.” And as for 6-year-old Brianna Ochoa, she just couldn’t wait to see Santa Claus. Celebrities, officials, athletes and all who attended talked about the fun and excitement that is the McAllen Holiday Parade. Nothing more than an idea a few years ago, the parade, carnival, and entertainment event has become an extravaganza and has brought with it plenty of excitement to usher in the Christmas season. “This is absolutely amazing,” said former Dallas Cowboy Tony Hill, one of the greatest wide receivers in the storied franchise’s history. “The size of this event, the people, everything here is first class See PARADE pg. 12

From pg. 1 to Edinburg and, finally to their current home at Westside Park in McAllen, located at 1000 S. Ware Road, across from the McAllen Convention Center. Bentsen Grove Resort has the largest number of participants from a single park and is called the league’s headquarters. Now, Martens is making his rounds, promoting the league around the Valley and looking for players. “As the years go by, we lose some players and gain new ones – but we are always looking for more who want to play and have fun,” said Martens, a Minnesota native. “It doesn’t matter what level they play, or if they’ve played before, we have a league, a level, that will fit them. This is our 25th year so we want to have a large number to commemorate it.” The highlights of the season include playoffs for each division and the U.S.-Canada game, which draws 300-plus fans, cheering, dressed in U.S. and Canadian garb, and waving flags and banners. The Winter League begins Jan. 3 and runs through the first week of March, ending with the end of year banquet. The league is open to Winter Texans and local residents alike, ages 55 and older. Cost is $60 per player and includes the season and the banquet. First-time players don’t have to register for a week, being able to have a chance to try it out. Call Martens at (956) 581-2254 for
more information. Martens, who played baseball at the University of Wichita, still remembers that time in Manila as if it was yesterday. Some of the players on the team were part of the hospital group. The day of the game, they walked in, gathered Martens’ clothes from the locker, went to where he was and helped him “unofficially get a discharge” for the game. “I had been lying in bed for 10 days any my legs were a little week,” he said. “But I wanted to play and they wanted me to play.” Martens had two singles on the day and was called on for a squeeze play. “I just hoped that I got the sign right,” he said. “You don’t want to call for time at that point, it’ll give it away.” The next day, Martens was back laying in his hospital bed. His clothes were back in the locker and it looked as if everything was clear. Then the doctor walked in. “He said he listened to the game on military radio and heard my name on it,” Martens said. “He was ready to court martial me.” Fortunately, a colonel by the name of Frank Borman put in a good word to the military doctor and Martens escaped discipline. “Eight years later, Frank Borman got into the space program and went to the moon,” Martens said. “I’m just glad he was still on earth that day.”

Tavie Spivey Rock-n-Roll Show opens Jan. 12
When Tavie Spivey entered the U.S. Army, it was during a time when women had two choices – go for administration or go for medical. “I chose medical,” Spivey said. “Then I went to a position in recruiting. That seemed to be my niche for 12 years.” Spivey spent 27 years in the Army, partly during the Gulf War. She said recruiting during a war is difficult. “Nobody wants to sign up during a war.” But Spivey’s first love – before, during and after the military – has always been singing. “I would sing to anybody who would listen to me,” said the Longview, Texas, native. “I started singing when I was little.” Spivey is back in the Rio Grande Valley for her fourth year and, for the second year in a row her all-female group, “Shake, Rattle and Roll” will join her for two weeks of shows in February Tavie and her “Rock-n-Roll Show,” featuring music from the 50s and 60s,
has entertained around the country and Europe and has been heard on “oldies” radio shows across the nation and other English speaking countries for many years. She has performed with talent such as “The Coasters,” “The Country Comedy Tour,” “Jimmy Clanton” (Venus in Blue Jeans), many Elvis tribute artists and at theaters, festivals and convention centers across the country. She has also performed for the “Columbia Space Shuttle Project” and the “Texas Country Music Hall of Fame” among many others. Her recruiting Army skills probably gave her a boost when she decided to look for an all-female group to make up “Shake, Rattle and Roll.” “I put an ad in the newspaper asking See TAVIE pg. 5

Kickin’ off the new year right, Rusty Rierson is coming back
Rusty Rierson is all country – from his charming looks to his smooth vocals, he brings a touch of yesterday’s country and mixes it a little with today’s; he doesn’t stray (for the most part). “I don’t pretend to be something I’m not,” said the performer from his ranch in Augusta, Kansas. “Of course, except when I’m ‘Rockin’ Rusty.’” Rockin’ Rusty is an alter ego that makes appearances at some shows. While Rierson is a self-described shy entertainer and is soft-spoken, Rockin’ Rusty is the “hippie cousin from San Francisco.” Rierson makes his return to the Valley starting with a show at Park Place on Jan. 2. Last year Rierson performed for just six weeks but this year he’s here for the full season and said he’s excited with a pretty packed schedule. “Usually I’m at home twiddling my thumbs at the ranch during the winter,” Rierson said. “This year it’s going to be the busiest winter season I’ve ever had.” Because of that he’s working on a variety of shows to perform so people who want to see him more than once don’t hear the same songs or jokes as before. “Sometimes I’ll perform two days in a row at parks that are next to each other,” he said. “If people want to come hear

me again, I want to give them something different and I want to keep them entertained.” Rierson got into music when he was 14 years old. He started singing in church and soon it became a passion. He learned guitar when his father, Roger, suggested that they take lessons together. In 2005, Rierson won the statewide “YF&R talent find contest” hosted by Farm Bureau and performed at the Kansas State Fair where he is annually invited back. In 2007, Rierson won the “Colgate Country Showdown” at the state level and placed in the top 15 nationally. He competed again at state in 2008, 2010, and 2011, before signing with his first record label. Rierson recently released a new video to go with his heartfelt song “Life is Too Short (No Matter How Long it Lasts).” The video shows Rierson sitting inside a barn and playing guitar. It then transitions to photos throughout his childhood. The song is an emotional look through his years and the special relationship with his grandpa, who died in 1991. “My mom looked through all of our photo albums to find those photos,” Rierson said. “There are pictures of me, my See RUSTY pg. 7

the river,” he explained before launching. Johnny offers daily river tours for individuals or groups with a minimum of 15 people for the one-hour tour. Two-hour tours will be offered beginning in January, with a minimum of 25 passengers. Reservations are recommended. The Riverside Club – which is pretty much run by Johnny’s wife, Jennifer – also offers tour and dinner packages. The restaurant is open everyday from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., and every Sunday they have a live band performing at the club for anybody who wants to come out – no cover charge. And these are some of the best bands in the Valley – the Renaissance Rockers and the Riverside Band, who alternate days they perform. Jennifer says the club also features live music from 1-5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, rain or shine, no cover charge. On good weather days the band is out on the patio, and on cooler or bad weather days they’ll be indoors so folks can enjoy the live music and dancing, rain or shine. Not to be outdone, Johnny says the Riverside Dreamer has covered cushioned seating that’s really comfortable for 49 passengers. On days with our great South Texas weather (like the day we went out last weekend) the windows on the boat are open. When the weather is cooler, the windows can be closed and the passenger area is heated for maximum comfort. During the river tour, Captain Johnny explains all the sights along the banks of the river. Those who have not been down to the river in a while may be surprised to see the beautiful recreational areas that are springing up on the Mexican side of the river. Most of them are privately owned, as Johnny explained, being rented out for private parties, weddings and events. The tour also provides a chance to see some of the birds along the riverfront. The captain pointed out a Great Egret and a Great Blue Heron during Saturday’s tour. The weather was gorgeous, adding to the enjoyment or a pleasant cruise that allowed all about to see the river and the scenery from a completely different perspective. When you go, be sure to take your camera along. You’ll be in for a treat and you’ll want to share your photos with family and friends. When the river cruise is finished, walk inside the Riverside Club for a snack or a meal. They serve a variety of tasty appetizers and meals. Folks who’ve been there recommend their pork tenderloin sandwiches. They are huge and wonderfully delicious. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced. For more information about the river cruises, or directions call 956-581-4477. They are located at 214 E. Chimney Rd., Mission – just the other side of the levee.

PARADE
WINTER TEXAN TIMES www.wttrgv.com
From pg. 1 – there are a lot of Cowboys fans here too; that makes it even greater.” Close to 200 floats and balloons filled the path and the sky above it first inside McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium and then down Bicentennial Boulevard in McAllen where people set up their lounge chairs hours earlier to have a good spot to see everything the parade had to offer. “It seems like this parade gets bigger and bigger every year,” said David Ovalle, of Mercedes. “We’ve come the past three years and just spend a day here. After the first year we didn’t really know if we were going to return, but it’s just become addicting – and the city has done a good job combining all the other events surrounding this.” Anthony Gonzalez, the voice of Miguel in the animated film “Coco,” performed with about 400-500 fourth- and fifth-grade choir students from McAllen ISD’s elementary schools. Joining them
were also members of McAllen High’s four-time state champion Mariachi Oro, Action Dance Group and Las Palmas Folklorico Dancers. Prior to the parade, there was no lack of entertainment with dance groups, the Valley Symphony Orchestra, the McAllen Rowe elite dancing and singing group Razz Ma Tazz, A Tuba Christmas performance and Gonzalez, who came dressed in a black Mariachi outfit, all performing before the parade. The U.S. Air Force Honor Guard officially opened the ceremonies with a march routine that amazed the crowd prior to the presentation of flags and the singing of the National Anthem by Brianna Amaya of Razz Ma Tazz. Other celebrities at this year’s event included Dallas Cowboys legend Jay Novacek; Dallas Cowboys players Jaylon and Rod Smith; the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders; Mexican actor Arap Bethke; Mexican actress Carmen Aub; and Mexican television and film actor Iván Arana.

A strolling we will go
For the second year in a row, residents of Southern Oasis in Mission participated in a Christmas Stroll. It was a time for neighbors to get out and greet one another and meet new residents, while renewing acquaintances with old friends. From 4 to 6 p.m. five residents opened their homes to host the other residents of the subdivision as they made their way to the five houses to greet their hosts and friends and to sample goodies provided by the hosts. My first stop was at the home of Robert and Kay Sutten from Michigan, who have only been in the subdivision for three months. The home was definitely ready for Christmas with all kinds of decorations including a Christmas village. “This is awesome… a great way for us to meet our new neighbors,” said Kay who had prepared a feast to be sampled by visitors. The entire bar was filled with treats such as bacon-wrapped chestnuts, Swedish meatballs, dips and chips and all kinds of other goodies. Her kitchen cabinet had a plethora of Christmas cookies and treats to be sampled. Inside visitors munched on plates of goodie and looked around at her Christmas decorations. Outside on the patio a variety of drinks were available as other neighbors took their plates enjoyed the warm afternoon that was perfect for the stroll. My second stop was at the home of Ken and Judy Boyle where their collection of Santas greeted visitors like Robin Premus who was all lit up with a string of Christmas lights around her neck. The Boyles have been in the Valley 16 years and are in their third year of residency in Southern Oasis. They served guests who gathered inside and on their patio novelty drinks and hors oeuvres. Next door, Donna Horcher hosted for her second year in a row, serving her famous jalapeno margaritas. Served with crackers, dips and smoked salmon, Horcher had guests who settled in for a long visit. Kathy and Gary Cavallin, of Minnesota, were the next hosts. They have been in Southern Oasis three years. Kathy had a spread crackers, dips and hors oeuvres that also included bacon-wrapped chestnuts Delicious! They must be a northern treat at Christmas because this Southern girl had never had them before. Out on their patio DuWayne Baughman and friends were commenting on what a nice event the stroll was because they seldom see their neighbors. “This is a fantastic way to meet everyone” said Baughman. The last stop of the night included Ed and Mary Wells, of Texas, with Bob and Kay Mocha, of Iowa, as hosts. The Wells have been in Southern Oasis four years while the Mochas have been there five years.
Judy and Ken Boyle
Robert and Kay Sutton
Because they were further away from the other homes, it looked as if everyone had saved them for the last stop and the party went into overtime for the stroll but no one seemed to mind. They had the garage and set up with tables for people to sit and eat. There were a variety of foods and lots of drinks, including soft drinks, beer and mimosas available. Mary made a Christmas tree of a cheese dip covered with olives for bulbs that was delicious! Not to be outdone, Kay made a quickly disappearing mountain of peanut clusters, her signature Christmas candy. For some like Sam and C.J. Rodio, it was their first stroll and the first time they met many of the residents. For others who regularly get together in the club and participate in many of the activities, it was just another great way to get together with friends. Residents are already looking forward to the 2019 stroll.

And shrimp scampi is very popular with Winter Texans.” - My husband, Ben, ordered the chicken fried steak, nwhich he described as very tender with a good season, ing flavor. Krauss said they hand-pound their meats to assure tenderness before breading it. The shrimp scampi included plump shrimp on a bed on angel hair pasta flavored with red and green pepper, red onion, and mushrooms in a white wine sauce. Look for other entrees such as the ribeye steak, pork chops, salmon, and sea bass in chipotle. Other entrees include diablo shrimp, rosemary chicken and chicken parmigiana. Santa Claus visits Weslaco Parade
by Mark Moreno For Brian and Judy Lunny and Steve and Carol Klem, the 2018 Mid-Valley Lighted Christmas Parade in Weslaco is a must-see celebration. And the natives of Winnipeg and Ontario invited neighbors and friends Lorraine Goodman and Barb Berzenski to join in the evening fun. Travelling the two miles on Business 83 from their winter home at Pine to Palm Resort, they set up their lawn chairs on Railroad Street and Texas Boulevard hoping to catch a glimpse of the Disney theme Christmas parade. After coming to the Valley for nearly fifteen years, they shared what it is that keeps bringing them back to South Texas each winter. “We like the weather, we like the culture and we like the people,” Brian said. Many Winter Texans were part of the hundreds of the other families lined up on the sidewalk wearing light sweaters and feasting their eyes on a wonderful evening out. Brian said he was at the parade to wave and see Santa Claus. The mile-long parade began on Pike Boulevard promptly at six in the evening and continued south on Texas Blvd., ending at Sixth Street approximately two hours later. With the temperatures in the mid-50s,
as the sun dropped below the horizon, the illuminated Christmas parade began and was filled with over a hundred highly decorative floats using colorful lights. Each float featured a Disney character, such as Mickey Mouse and the Little Mermaid. Other floats included an inflatable of Rudolph while playing the song “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Asked what her favorite float was, Carol said, “There were too many of them and they were all good. We come every year and this is a really nice kick-off to the Christmas season.” The festive event also featured local schools, from elementary students up to high school marching bands playing the seasonal melodies, such as “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus is coming to Town” with a dance routine by the students following along with the music. “The people and the marching bands, that was my favorite,” Judy said. “The excitement in the children – watching the kids get so excited.” “All the little people, so many kids in the parade and that’s the best part when you include it. So neat.” Carol said. The climax of the parade was Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on the fire engine ladder truck, waving from the to the children below who were eagerly anticipating his arrival.
