Kenwood RV Park has Bluegrass Jam
By Kathy Olivarez Bluegrass jams may not be as common in the RGV as they were ten years ago, but there are still a good number of Winter Texan jammers who enjoy the genre. In the mid-valley area, Kenwood RV Park in La Feria has a Bluegrass Jam on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. The stage band has banjos, guitars, dobros, bass violins and, of course, a fiddle. They also have an autoharp seated near the stage. When the Winter Texan Times visited during Christmas week, the music was a mixture of Bluegrass and Christmas tunes. Mary Harris, who played to autoharp, sang “When My Blue Moon Turns Gold Again.” She also played an instrumental called “Red Apple Rag,” assisted by her See BLUEGRASS pg. 19
Elvis Fest coming Jan. 9 at Little Graceland
By Kathy Olivarez Guess where one of the most popular private homes visited by tourists in the United States is located. Right here in the Rio Grande Valley in Los Fresnos! According travel researchers, Little Graceland ranks as one of the most popular private homes to be visited in the United States. Little Graceland is the home of Simon Vega, a long time fan of Elvis since he served with Elvis in the military. Both received their basic training at Fort Hood in 1959 and both were later stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedburg, Germany beginning in 1959 for a 20-month period. Vega describes Elvis as being humble, polite and kind. “But most of All, Elvis just wanted to be treated like any other soldier and was proud to do his tour of duty. But he See ELVIS FEST pg. 23

Valley man is world’s oldest pilot
By Kathy Olivarez Dick Smith is a character. At age 97 he looks decades younger than his age suggests. He still gets around quite well. In fact, one of the ways he gets around is in an airplane he built himself from a kit. It took him four years to build it, but it was completed in 1999 and is still flying. While Dick does not go far these days, he still enjoys flying his plane. He often flies from the McAllen Airport to the Edinburg Airport just to keep his flying skills intact. Born April 2, 1918 in Coraopolis, a suburb of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, it seems he always knew what he wanted to do. In a civics contest when he was 13, he wrote he wanted to build airplanes. After turning 17 in April and graduating high school in May, he left home to pursue his dream of building airplanes. He went to the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he trained as an airplane mechanic for one year. In order to complete his training, Dick had to learn to fly. While his funds were limited, he managed to take enough lessons to complete his certificate. His first solo flight was in 1936.

CSNSongs performs tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Travel back to where it all began in Woodstock in 1969 on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 at 7 p.m. when Llano Grande Park Lake Resort takes Winter Texans back to another era with a group of seasoned and professional musicians who perform the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s compositions as they were originally written. CSNSONGs tribute will perform the group’s most famous songs, including “Long Time Gone,” “Southern Cross,” “Sweet Judy Blue Eyes,” “Teach Your Children,” “Marrakesh Express,” and “Just a Song Before I go.” The music was born in Woodstock, NewYork at the famous Woodstock Music Festival in the summer of 1969, when Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit the stage and changed the face of folk-rock forever. Their music continued througout the 70s, 80s, 90s and today. The harmonious vocals of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are perfectly reproduced and
are heard in every song CSNSONGs performs. Audiences are amazined and deighted as they enjoy being encouraged to participate and sing along with their favorite hit songs throughout the entire show. Exciting dialogue adds expression to this musically dynamic performance that takes guests to a time in history that will never be forgotten. This show is planned to be the first show in the new events center at Llano Grande. In the event the building is not yet ready for occupancy, the show will be held in the recreation hall. Tickets are $25 and are available at Llano Grande Park Lake Resort, 2215 East West Blvd, (Hwy 83, then south on Mile 2 West to gate) in Mercedes. To order tickets by phone, please call (956) 565-2228. For more informatin call Robert Ferguson at (574) 361-2947.

ing the crew, and since there was a shortage of steel, the plant was on hold. Disillusioned, he resigned and started looking for a Navy recruiter. He was welcomed with open arms. He attended three training schools in 1942 at the naval yard in New Orleans. He was then sent to Olatha, Kansas where he was an instructor for a year-and-a-half before the Navy transferred him to Detroit. When that position was closed, he went to basic training to get into the Pacific conflict. He learned to fly the “flying boats” or Catalinas, which were famous during the war era because they could rescue downed pilots in the water. He also trained to fly the Martin Mariner, which had a big landing gear and two motors. Pilots had to climb a ladder to get into the cockpits, which were two stories off the ground. Just as he competed his training, the Japanese surrendered in 1945. Instead of heading for the Pacific, he was sent to the Banana River Naval Air Station (now Cape Canaveral). His job there was to supervise the release of the navy men who fought in the war until he could be released. He arrived home three days before Christmas in 1945 with a new wife and a pocket full of money that he saved during his years in the See PILOT pg. 34

the ring. Although he received a small wound in the toss, he was right back in front of his bull to the end, winning symbolic ears and tail, awarded by the fans. These two world-ranked matadors opened the season at Santa Maria bullring last year. No doubt this year’s opener will be another spectacular performance because these two matadors are in constantly in competition to outperform each other. The bulls for this year are the largest animals ever presented in La Gloria, and are of pure Spanish ancestry. They are large of horn and body, and will be on display at the bullring corrals from New Year’s Day on. Tickets are available at the Winter Texan Times in Mission (956-580-7800), and at Border Tire, located at Bus. 83 and Mayberry Road in Mission (956585-8473). Or reservations can be made by calling the bullring at 956-481-3300. Pay upon arrival. The gates open at 1 p.m. The bullfight begins at 4 p.m. sharp. Great food and beverage are available, and the restrooms are immaculate.

Sam Green sang “Blue Memory Broke My Heart in Two” and “Cryin’ My Heart Out Over You.” Bill Philip followed with a song about an orphan named Maria and later “”Somewhere in Kentucky.” Bob Hulett played “Bluegrass Growin’ in My Yard,” and “I Love Playin’ the Banjo.” Wayne Uncer, bass player and master of ceremonies, brought the Christmas theme back with “Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer.” His wife, Jane, played guitar and harmonized. The reindeer antlers they wore were the perfect touch for the song. Jane also sang, “Keep on the Sunny Side of the Street.” Jay Kelly followed on fiddle with
“Frosty the Snowman.” He later played “Away in an Manger.” Wes Lowe, introduced as “Santa” because he wore a Santa cap, said he used to play Santa Claus for many years. He played “Children Go Where I Send You,” on mandolin. Coy Mann played an instrumental on dobro. The bass violins switched out and Carolyn Barrett sang, “Hold What You Got” and “I’m on My Way Home.” Fred Barrett sang “Come on Down See BLUEGRASS pg. 23

Macaroni Grill offers a great relaxing evening
“Can we please go eat now? I’m starving!” When my 17-year-old grandson, “Hollow Leg”, climbed in my car after a two-hour soccer practice, he had the look of a starving dog who had not been fed for a week. “We are headed to Macaroni Grill right now,” I told him. The starving look changed to one of anticipated bliss because “Hollow Leg” loves pasta. When we arrived and I told the manager I was there to do a food review and wanted to be served by their singing waiter. Our server brought menus and told us the antipastas are a bargain with two for $9. “Hollow Leg” looked as if he might pass out so I let him select. He chose the spicy ricotta meatballs and the fried mac and cheese bits with truffle dip. I was introduced to Aaron Barber when he arrived at our table bringing a delicious loaf of peasant bread a few minutes later. “Here is your hot bread,” he greeted us in an operatic voice. As we waited for the appetizers, “Hollow Leg” devoured half the bread, which is served with olive oil, while I learned Aaron had studied opera for a year and a half. When our server, Brian, offered us wine, I decided to have a glass, because it just seemed to go with pasta. He recommended Noble Vines 181, which is a red wine with a taste of black cher-

ry, cedar and spices. While I am far from a wine connoisseur, it might have been the best red wine I’ve tasted. For out entrees, “Hollow Leg” selected Mama’s Trio, a combination of chicken Parmesan over pasta, fettuccini Alfredo and lasagna Bolognese. I selected my favorite, mushroom ravioli, while my husband went for spaghetti and meatballs. When Aaron arrived to serve us, he brought his fiancée, Natalie Rodriguez, also an opera singer. Together, they sang “Laci Darem la Mano” from Don Giovanni. Meanwhile, “Hollow Leg” worked his way through the chicken Parmesan and the fettuccini Alfredo, but hit saturation before eating the lasagna. Could it really be true? “Hollow Leg” was too full to eat more??? Aaron was called away to another table to sing “Ave Maria,” his most frequently requested song, but returned soon with the tiramisu, an Italian dessert cake with mascarpone, ladyfingers, espresso, rum and cocoa. It was light with no taste overpowering the other. Delicious! A little opera, a good glass of wine and a dish of pasta followed by a light-tasting dessert… a great way to relax after a hard week.

These FREE screenings are valued at approximately $1,000. A 12hour food fast is recommended for those wishing to have blood screening tests performed. “We are very excited to host this community health fair here in Mission,” said Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, George Myers. “It provides a great opportunity for the public to examine their own health while at the same time, learning how to help others become healthy as By Kathy Olivarez well.” One of the reasons Midwestern Winter For more information about the event Texans enjoy coming to the Rio Grande please contact Laura Vela at events@mis- Valley for the winter is to be able to enjoy sionchamber.com or at 956-585-2727. the tropical beaches. Black eyed Peas Anyone?
By Jim Clifton Winter Texan from Oklahoma I just saw a post on Facebook stating a curiosity about why we eat black-eyed peas for luck on New Year’s Day. I have a family story to pass along if you have the time. My great grandfather, John Edward Clifton, was married to my GGM, Mary Paulina Dent in Paducah, Kentucky. They farmed 320 acres into the Civil War times. GGF decided to get into the war in 1863, so he raised a company of horsemen and they became “B” Company of the 2nd Kentucky Calvary, CSA. The calvary rushed across Kentucky to the aid of General Braxton Bragg near Perryville. They were put under the command of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Shortly, they fought in the Battle of Perryville and were defeated by General Rosecrans. Rosecrans finessed Bragg’s army out of Kentucky and most of Tennessee. Bragg decided to stand his ground at the Battle of Stones River, Tenn. and was narrowly defeated in one of the bloodiest conflicts of the civil war. General Bragg’s forces retreated to the area of Chickamauga Creek, just inside Georgia, South of Chattanooga, Tenn. When Rosecrans troops came looking for Bragg’s army, Bragg atSee SOUTH PADRE pg. 33

Grant replaced Rosecrans at Chattanooga and soon counter-attacked Bragg, nearly wiping out Bragg’s army. My GGF was captured at Chattanooga, along with 700 other Confederates. The 2nd Kentucky Calvary ceased to exist! My GGF would be sent to prison camp at Cairo, Ill. In March of 1864, he signed an Armistice agreement and he returned home to Paducah, Ken.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
In 1867, GGF and GGM sold their land and began a journey to Springtown, Texas, just west of Ft. Worth, where they again took up farming. Arriving late in the summer, it was too late to plant corn, so instead, the family planted broom corn that would make in a short time. Broom corn is somewhat nutritious, but bitter. That winter they lived on broom corn and cow’s milk. The next spring they planted black-eyed peas and were so happy to have something to eat other than broom corn! So it was all over the South, families were lucky to have something to eat, so black-eyed peas were celebrated on New Year’s Day!

From pg. 18 Navy. He used the money to purchase 105 acres of land in Hillsboro, Illinois, near St. Louis, Missouri. It was his dream to start his own airfield. He built a runway, hangars, an office building and obtained an airplane he used to train people who wanted to learn to fly. With the G. I. Bill, one of the ways the money could be used was to learn to fly an airplane so he had many students who received money from the G.I. Bill to learn to fly. Before long he had seven airplanes in his company.
In 1951, his life took a turn when he flew to McAllen with a group of Flying Farmers from Illinois and Indiana. Elmer and Lloyd Bentsen, uncle and father of the late senator Lloyd Bentsen, had amassed a fortune selling land in the Rio Grande Valley. Dick fell in love with the Rio Grande Valley and decided to move here. He went home and sold everything he had and moved. Here in the Valley, he got a job training pilots at the Tri-city Airfield (Moore Airfield, located northwest of Mission) until 1954 when politicians encouraged the government to take the airfield back See PILOT pg. 35

(During the war, Moore dAirfield had been used as a training base ofor World War II pilots.) e Training for pilots was transferred eto California Eastern Airways, so he gworked for them until 1961, when Moore Airfield was once again closed. - Dick then took up crop-dusting and emanaged to survive a plane crash in one )of his planes while dusting. d At the same time, he decided to do a klittle inventing on his own. He designed a baby seat for the 1960 Ford cars with two-bucket seats. The Baby Buckette sat between the two seats. He started a manufacturing plant in McAllen and manufactured 6500 for Ford dealers across the country. Demand grew and he had 25,000 on order from Ford when safety standards for baby seats were increased and the order was cancelled. He moved over to Reynolds Manufacturing of McAllen, a company that made land-leveling equipment used to level farmland. He supervised production. The company struggled a bit in its early years, but when he left in 1981, it had 650 employees. Their equipment was not only used in the United States but also in Mexico, Iran and Iraq. In the Great Lakes area, Reynolds designed machinery that would move the salt out of the salt mines, which are usually at least 2500 feet underground. They created the machinery to move the product, which was powered by Cater-
easily through round vacuum tanks. Reynolds also developed tree planters, equipment designed to plant new trees in areas of Georgia, Tennessee and East Texas where trees were being harvested for lumber and paper mills. They were eventually the largest manufacturer of tree-planting equipment in the world. By the time Smith retired in 1983, he not only worked for Reynolds Manufacturing, he was one of the ten major stockholders. The company was eventually bought by a Miami-based manufacturing firm. In 1995, he saw an advertisement in a magazine for a kit to build an airplane called a Capella. It took him four years to build the all-aluminum plane in the garage of his home in Pharr South. It took 6,000 rivets to attach the wings to his plane. He took his first flight in 1999, and still flies the plane often. He also has a second plane located in Navasota, where his son lives. He did not build that one, but flew it often. Recently, he read an article in General Aviation magazine stating there was a 96-year-old Canadian pilot listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest pilot. He wrote them and said he was 97 so that makes him the oldest pilot still flying. The year 2016 will mark his 70th year as a licensed pilot. He is planning to go to 100 if possible. He must test every two years and his next test is in April. Wish him luck!

By D. Johnston Eight local disadvantaged families were “adopted” this Christmas by the residents of Chimney RV Park in Mission. Lois Wilmot organized the project and several volunteers helped shop for clothing and food for the families whose ages, gender, and clothing sizes were provided by the Mission Food Pantry. Park residents have participated in charitable causes over the years and so had Lois Wilmot and her late husband, Dave, in Minnesota. They carried over a tradition of adopting a family for Christmas during their first years in the RGV. By the year 2001, other park residents asked if they could help and families increased to two, then, three, and five for the past few years. Monetary donations were more generous than ever this year and with new participation by Trivent Insurance, a subsidiary of Lutheran Services , the number of families grew to eight. One family of five children was being raised by their grandmother, while their mother is in long term hospitalization. Each child receives a toy or gift and a complete new clothing outfit including shoes. Parents also receive a gift as well as a frozen turkey and ingredients for a Christmas day meal as well as a month’s supply of staples. Approximately 18 people wrapped presents, organized food boxes, loaded and delivered the items to the families on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Mission Food Pantry. The genuine appreciation of the families was also felt in the satisfaction of giving by Lois Wilmot, her volunteers and the folks at Chimney Park.
