Thanks for coming!
As we near the end of another winter season, it’s time to say farewell to many of you who will be leaving Jim Brunson the Rio Grande Valley and heading north in the next week or two. We want to take a moment to just say, “Thank you” for choosing the Rio Grande Valley as your winter home and invite you to take a few extra copies of the Winter Texan Times Take Home Edition (published on March 15) to share with your friends and neighbors back home. If you need extra copies, call or come by the Winter Texan Times office at 1217 N. Conway Ave., Mission. We printed extras just, so you can share. See FROM THE PUBLISHER pg. 19
Share the fun!
Wow has time flown by this Winter Texan season! Now that it is coming to a close, we here at the Winter Texans Times would love for you to share with us – and all our readers – what this season was like for you in the Rio Grande Valley. What was your favorite event? Did you work with any charities? Did you compete in sports or any type of competition (like the chili cook-off in Llano Grande Resort and Country Club?). We would love for you to send us your photos of what life was like for you this year in the Rio Grande Valley. Next week we will publish as many of those photos as we can – so when you send them, give us a little information such as what the event was, when and where it was taken and who are in the photos (at least the people you know). So, if some of your most memorable events this year included playing pickleball for the first time, or watching the amazing Bill Chrastil or some of the other wonderful Wintertainers™, or you made a blanket to donate to a deserving person or groups, please share that with us! Texas Onion Fest features top entertainment
The 1015 onion, only grown in the Rio Grande Valley, has lived up to its nickname – the “Million Dollar Baby” since its inception in the early 1980s by Texans A&M horticulture professor Dr. Leonard Pike. It took 10 years of research, continual testing and a million dollars in cost to develop. The Rio Grande Valley has been celebrating one of the state’s most successful crops ever since. The 2018 Texas Onion Fest will be held Saturday, March 24 at Mayor Pablo City Park, 300 N. Airport Road in Weslaco. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 3-12 and free for children ages 2 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by visiting www.weslaco.com. The Texas Onion Fest, which began in 1989, celebrates the development of the world-famous Texas 1015 Onion which was developed in Weslaco. The name of the 1015 onion came from the suggested planting date, Oct. 15. The event, sponsored by the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce, includes live entertainment on two stages, the exciting “Onion Eating Contest,” food, commercial booths, kiddie rides, two per-

Winter Texans join in McAllen Monarch Festival
Winter Texan volunteer Pamela Drew works with Sienna Randall, 6, at one of the butterfly creating stations during the annual Monarch Festival at Quinta Mazatlan.
Pamela Drew handed 6-year-old Sienna Randall a spray bottle and explained to her what to do with the paper butterfly she had just designed. “Go ahead and spray it sweetie,” she said at the Butterfly Craft Station. “Then we can get another color.” Drew was one of dozens of volunteers helping out at the annual McAllen Monarch Festival, held Saturday, March 17 at Quinta Mazatlan. The festival celebrates the arrival of the Monarch Butterflies. There were crafts, nature presentations, butterfly garden information, music, art, food and more. Pamela and her husband John are Winnipeg, Canada residents but spent their first long-term winter in the Rio Grande Valley this year, residing at Victoria Palms RV Resort in Donna. They said they have a similar festival back home so volunteering for the McAllen event was a perfect connection for them. See MONARCH FESTIVAL pg. 15

Winter Texans enjoy the RGV Livestock Show
By Luciano Guerra As the largest livestock show south of San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show (RGVLS) attracts thousands of visitors from all across south Texas year-in and year-out. Whether it’s for the food, the carnival, the rodeo, the shopping, the concerts, the animals or the many other attractions meant to entertain and oftentimes educate the public, there is always plenty to see and do at this annual event for visitors of all ages. Having just completed its 79th year, the most recent edition of the RGVLS was once again the place to be during Spring Break week. While most of the show’s visitors were year-round Valley residents, there were plenty of Winter Texans in attendance as well; Chuck and Carol Fick of Amberg, Wisconsin among them. In their 17th year as Winter Texans, the Ficks, who used to reside at Bentsen Palm RV Park but are currently calling Victoria Palms RV Resort their home while in the Valley, have made a habit of attending the RGVLS several years in a row now. “We were at Bentsen Palm Park for several years but because we’d drive by Victoria Palms whenever we’d go to the flea market, my wife Carol mentioned one time that she’d like to stay there,”
Chuck and Carol Fick of Amberg, Wisconsin, who make their winter home at Victoria Palms RV Resort, get into the spirit of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show Saturday. Winter Texan Times photo by Luciano Guerra said Chuck Fick who retired after 40 anda-half years as a teacher and an administrator in Random Lake, Wisconsin. “So we went in and investigated it and we’ve been there ever since.” As for what it is about the RGVLS that keeps them coming back, Carol Fick said, “We were both raised on farms and
this show is much like the state fairs and county fairs we grew up attending. Also, I was in 4-H for years so this show is just like going home and reliving a big part of my childhood.” “This is probably our fourth of fifth year of attending this show,” she added. “We brought our kids and grandkids to
watch the rodeo last Saturday so this is our second visit this year.” As long-time Winter Texans, the Ficks are walking and talking billboards for the Rio Grande Valley as the place to go for anybody looking for a winter home. “Our son-in-law took back info about our park to his neighbors because they had tried Arizona and they didn’t like it at all,” Chuck Fick said. “We’ve done the same thing. We’ve told several people about the Valley and we’ve had quite a few of our friends down here over the years come and visit and experience life in the Valley first-hand.” Originally from Wales, in the United Kingdom, Keith and Kay Collins now live in Hatboro, Pennsylvania when they’re not staying in their winter home in Laguna Vista. While they are now in their 20th year as Winter Texans, they were just on their third day in the Valley this winter when they visited the RGVLS Saturday. With one of Keith Collins’ hobbies being nature and wildlife photography and Kay being an artist, the fact that this reporter first encountered them admiring the photography and art exhibits at the RGVLS should not come as a surprise to anyone. Yum! Take the Mozna Chocolate Factory tour
After the presentation, members of the Red Hat Queen’s Council got to sample the different flavors of chocolate made from the beans that come from Mexico, Venezuela, Vietnam and Tanzania. Winter Texans looking for something fun to do with a group from their park may want to try the Mozna Chocolate Factory, located at 115 Brazil St. in Hidalgo. This small factory, now starting its third year of operation, gets cacao beans from Mexico, Venezuela, Vietnam and Tanzania and turns them into healthy chocolate bars with 70 percent cocoa. While the bars are not as sweet as a Hershey’s chocolate bar, according to our tour guide they are full
of antioxidants that are good for the heart and help lower blood pressure. Danny Williams provides visitors with a history of chocolate that started with the pre-Columbian cultures 4,000 years ago in Meso-America. Cacao beans were reserved for the wealthy, meaning royalty and rich merchants. Although it made a very bitter drink, it was recognized for its healthy nutrients. It was referred to as the “food of the gods,” Williams said.
The factory name, Mozna means “you can” in Polish. The monkey in the logo is associated with the monkeys that in some cultures climbed the cacao trees and picked the pods, throwing them down to harvesters. Trees can grow as tall as 30 feet tall. The beans grow in pods that contain 20 to 30 beans per pod. Both Aztecs and Mayan tribes drank the bitter drink. It was referred to as “xocolatl” by the Aztecs, who drank it hot. The Mayans drank it cold. It was not sweetened until the 1500s when Christopher Columbus discovered the drink on his voyages to the New World. Columbus took the drink back to Spain where the Europeans added sugar or honey to make it more palatable. The first chocolate bar was invented in 1877. And in 1895 the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania opened, creating one of America’s favorite candy bars. Williams told the group that chocolates grown in different areas have a different taste based on soil conditions and other factors. Many people prefer the chocolate grown in Tanzania best. After being picked, the beans are fermented for about five days to help with the acidity. They are dried in greenhous-

es after being fermented. The beans are shipped in burlap bags containing about 60 kilos, or about 120 pounds of beans. Once they arrive at the factory they are put in a roaster. Williams usually roasts about 11 kilos at a time at 130 degrees Celsius. After roasting, the second step is winnowing, which takes the shells off the beans. The shells fall in a bag while the beans are ground to nibs that fall into a bucket. The chocolate is then placed in a German mill where it is ground with 500-pound granite rollers. It is mixed with confectioner’s sugar and eight percent coco fat and is liquefied. It is milled for five days until the chocolate reaches 0.04 on a chocolate micrometer readying. At this point Williams passed out spoons so each person could taste the chocolate as it swirled in the mill. This particular chocolate was from Mexico and had a hint of vanilla in it. When ready, the chocolate was poured into large bar molds and refrigerated. Then the large bars were put into a tempering machine that melted the chocolate at 45 degrees Celsius, then cooled to 31 degrees. See MONZA TOUR pg. 5

From pg. 4 When ready, the chocolate was poured into candy molds, shaken to get air bubbles out and refrigerated for proper setting before being packaged for selling. Williams had samples of each of the types of chocolate for tasting and also a variety of chocolates for sale. Mozna chocolates can be found locally at the farmer’s market at Firemen’s Park,
From pg. 3 “I love wildlife, wild flowers and nature in general and my wife loves the shore,” Keith said. “Those are the two main reasons we chose the Rio Grande Valley for our winter home in the first place. She’ll be at the shore in the afternoons and I do my nature walks in the morning. I spend most of my time at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. I really enjoy the migratory birds, especially the water fowl. Loving nature the way I do is why the livestock is my favorite part of this show.” Frank and Patti Graves from Decorah, Iowa are only in their second year as Winter Texans. They reside at Pharr South while they’re in the Valley. When asked how many times they’ve attended the RGVLS, Frank Graves said, “This is our first time but it won’t be our last. It’s fun to see what good breeding bulls cost, what good show bulls cost and why Brahmans, and those kind of cattle, do so well in the heat while the Black Angus and Herefords we have up north can’t handle this heat.” Like many of the Winter Texans that were enjoying the many RGVLS attractions Saturday afternoon, the Graves were planning to attend the rodeo in the evening. In total there were 15 rodeo perfor-

Tell All Your Friends Up North Why Winter Texans Keep Coming to the Rio Grande Valley We hear it everyday from our Winter Texan friends.
They love the Rio Grande Valley because: 1. The people are friendly 2. The warm weather is great! We can get outdoors and enjoy. 3. It’s lots of fun! We have activities in the parks or resorts, including dances, concerts, shuffleboard, billiards, movie nights, jam sessions, dinners and ice cream socials and much, much more. 4. Plenty of things to do... Enjoy festivals and shows, golf and other activities such as Golden Age Olympics, softball, pentanque, bocce ball, RC races, museums, quilting and so much more.
5. It’s safe...Safer than at home! 6. We enjoy the culture! 7. It’s beautiful here! 8. Great entertainment. 9. The best place to spend your winter 10. No more shoveling snow!
11. It’s Affordable!
“There are so many activities and classes to be a part of, just in our park alone. I try to do them all, a lot of times with a group of friends. It makes it a lot of fun.” − Darlene Neel, Tinley Park, Ill.
“I love the softball, the golf and being able to sit at the pool with all the ladies. But the best thing, my wife and I have more friends here than we do back home. People welcome you with open arms.” − Larry Boggs, Branson, Mo.
“I love the park, the people, all the activities and the opportunities to volunteer, and of course to be warm. Do we need any more reasons?” − Jim and Eileen Archibald, Broken Arrow, Okla.
“We pick up the Winter Texan Times to read the stories and then see where all the different entertainers are playing and what activities are in the park. There’s just so much to do and so many different things.” − Don Wiebe, Manitoba, Canada

Ann’s Restaurant
I rarely ever order chicken fried anything from anywhere. I generally am not a fan. That being said, I’ve never had anything that was cooked up in Ann’s Restaurant, located on Highway 83 in San Juan, that was anything less than delicious. Those two statements were getting challenged. As my daughter Camilla and I walked into Ann’s we were greeted warmly – owner Nadia Baughman and staff are terrific. We grabbed a table along the wall where a large map covered with pushpins show where people have lived and

have visited – as expected, pins are dense in South Texas and the Midwest. Winter Texans love this place. Why wouldn’t they? The food is always cooked fresh and to order. You can even see owner Nadia Baughman tinkering in the kitchen, making sure everything is cooked as if she were at her own house. You want the taste of home? It’s here. THE Camilla and I each ordered a breakfast taco to start. This Valley breakfast staple was probably 1.5 GRIFFIN GRILL times the size of a normal taco with nearly twice as much filling. Both the chorizo and egg for CaFOOD, FRIENDS, FUN milla and the ham, egg and cheese for me were fresh, cooked perfectly and the homemade tortillas One of the area’s Top Restaurants Breakfast Entree Excludes Sides and Tacos were probably the best we’ve eaten in a long time. WINTER TEXAN TIMES MONARCH FESTIVAL
From pg. 1 Sienna’s dad, Matt Randall, said he was excited to see an event that teaches nature and the outdoors. “I was really excited to see this event was happening and all the great things they were having here – to teach about nature and the outdoors,” said Randall, who lives in the Valley but is from London, UK, “This is something the area needs, especially in a day of everything being technology and everyone on their phones or other electronics. There needs to be more interaction with the outdoors so this is great.” Pamela was working in a section of the festival that held plenty of hands-on activity stations for the kids like how to plant a seed, monarch easel painting, garden design, terrarium design, habitat for critters and many more. John Drew was also volunteering at the Scouts table. He had plenty of information on what badges the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts could earn while at the event. Some of the badge requirements included Bugs, Outdoor Art Maker, Into the Wild Adventure, Wolf, Bear and Insect badges. “The festival back home is right across the street from our home in Canada,” John said. “So this was something we were fa-

miliar with and are glad to be a part of.” Quinta Mazatlan is an urban sanctuary with a mission to enrich people's lives by sharing knowledge about birds, plants, and environmental stewardship in South Texas. Quinta Mazatlan and its World Birding Center partners promote birding and conservation of Valley habitat, especially as it benefits numerous avian residents and neo-tropical migrants. The parking lots were filled to capacity as people flocked to the annual show, many wearing orange, signifying the bright color displayed by the Monarch Butterfly. While the festival opened at 10 a.m. there were many people walking around on the grounds checking out the trails throughout Quinta Mazatlan. Rayma and Wayne Huggins, and Cathy Joab, were casually looking around – but in search of where the speakers would be making their presentation. The Huggins are from Manchester, Iowa and live in Mission Bell Tradewinds RV Park, while Joab is from Osage City, Kan. and resides during the winter at Oleander Acres. Like so many winter residents, they recently planted butterfly gardens in their park. Both Huggins and Joab had recently hatched out a monarch, one on Wednesday and the other just hours prior to attending the show. They planned to release them earlier this week at Oleander Acres.
MARCH 22, 2018 15 www.wttrgv.com
“I always kept a well-maintained garden and then when I wanted to build a butterfly garden I read that the butterflies like an unkempt area, so I had to dig it up and let the weeds grow,” Joab said. “I love hummingbirds too, so have been planting for them as well.” Monarchs are highly attracted to the milkweed plant. During their winter migration south from as far north at the Great Lakes in Canada, through the Rio Grande Valley and into the Central Mexico forests, they will fly at speeds ranging between 12 and 25 miles per hour. However, similar to the migrating birds, the monarch butterflies use the clear advantage of updrafts of warm air, called “thermals" and glide as they migrate, to preserve the energy required for flapping their wings all the through the long 2,500-mile voyage from. They rest there through winter and then complete their migration northwards in search of milkweed plants. When those butterflies go through Topeka, Kan., Mike and Val Pater will be ready for them. The Paters, who live in the winter at Palmera Heights in LaFeria, planted a butterfly garden two years ago, filled with milkweed plants. How much do those butterflies love the milkweed? The caterpillar is a voracious eater and it is capable of consuming an entire milkweed leaf in less than five minutes.
Rayma and Wayne Huggins, of Machester Iowa, and Cathy Joab of Osage City, Kan. have built butterfly gardens at their Winter Texan parks, Mission Bell Tradewinds and Oleander Acres, respectively, and were enjoying the annual Monarch Festival at Quinta Mazatlan.
“One plant alone had about 30 butterflies around it,” Mike Pater said. “Last year it had about 20 of the caterpillars. We really enjoyed planting it and now watching it grow.”

UTRGV WT Survey prize winners announced
As promised, two lucky Winter Texans who participated in this year’s Winter Texan Survey conducted by the Business and Tourism Research Center at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley have been selected as the prize winners for this year’s drawing. The winner of the Kindle Fire, provided courtesy of UTRGV, is Helen Willis of Tip-O-Texas RV Resort in Pharr. Dennis Bloomingdale, of Illinois, who winters at Tropic Winds Resort in Harlingen, is the winner of the $150 cash prize provided by the Winter Texan Times. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley conducts the bi-annual Winter Tex-
an survey to study the economic impact of Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. The previous survey conducted during the 2015-16 winter season determined that Winter Texans spend $760 million annually in the Valley, making a significant economic impact. The university research team led by Dr. Penny Simpson, Business and Tourism Research Center Director, will compile and analyze the data collected and produce a detailed report in the coming months. Thank you to all the Winter Texans who participated in this year’s survey.
