It’s always a delight to see our WT friends arrivJim Brunson ing back in the Rio Grande Valley for another season of fun and friendship. It’s just not the same when you are gone for the summer. Cooler weather has finally arrived in the Rio Grande Valley – just in time to welcome our Winter Texan friends. That seems to be the pattern each year. Texas Butterfly Festival registration underway Paul K. Strother probably didn’t know how amazing the fossilized moth scales he and his team uncovered were and how they would rewrite history. Six years later, Strother, whose interest is in the study of paleopalynology (defined officially as the study of dust and how certain life was created), and his colleagues determined that what they found provided the earliest known evidence of the species on Earth – 70 million years prior to what was previously confirmed. Strother will be the keynote speaker for the 23rd annual Texas Butterfly Festival, Nov. 3-6 at the National Butterfly Center, located at 3333 Butterfly Park Dr. in Mission. There have been 230 different types of butterflies found at the National Butterfly Center and the butterfliers of all levels – from beginners to the most experienced can be part of the three-day event, exploring areas with world-class trip leaders. Birding Fest taking reservations By Henry Miller While you’re in the Rio Grande Valley, you’ll want to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the fall weather and do some birding in one of the country’s most prolific birding areas. Some 535 different species of birds have been identified in the Valley. To take advantage of some amazing field trips, birding workshops and seminars, now is the time to register for the 2018 Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival – before all the slots are filled. Online registration is now underway but ends October 24. After that date, those wanting to register late must call or walk in to register. Folks can register online at www. rgvbf.org. The 25th anniversary of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival takes place Nov. 7-11 at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, located at 1204 Fair Park See BIRDING pg. 2

The annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival will be held Nov. 7-11 in Harlingen. The festival offers some exceptional opportunities to take field trips with professional birding guides. Register online before Oct. 24 at www.rgvbf.org.

Why more Winter Texans are coming

Local Valley cities roll out the red carpet for Winter Texans as they arrive in the Rio Grande Valley each fall. Many host special Winter Texan appreciation days and events, such as the Winter Texan Fiesta held in Mission each year, pictured above.

By Henry Miller In Sharon, Minn., 14 inches of snow fell in 24 hours between Oct. 10 and 11. A comment on the National Weather Service’s website read “there was some melting, so the actual amount could have been higher.” A few days earlier in the Rio Grande Valley, the high temperature was in the low 90s, the sun was bright and people were flocking to South Padre Island for the beach, many going to check out the annual “Sandcastle Days” event. Where would you rather be? More winter visitors are discovering the Rio Grande Valley. The biggest reason they come to South Texas is the weather. Winter Texans are pretty smart; they would much rather spend the day at the beach than shoveling snow. In addition to a myriad of beach activities to choose from, such as sailing, fishing, surfing or dolphin watch cruises, there are a host other outdoor activSee WINTER TEXANS pg. 3

From pg. 1 Blvd. in Harlingen. The event is strategically dated so those who enjoy observing both birds and butterflies also have the opportunity to attend the Texas Butterfly Festival in Mission the days immediately prior to the Birding Festival. The Birding Festival offers dozens and dozens of birding field trips, as well as workshops and seminars. Each field trip is led by professionals by bus or van. Many field trip guides and workshop leaders are renowned experts and published authors of birding or butterfly field guides or other resource books. More than 60 vendors of bird-related products are available for every level of birder at the Birders Bazaar. Field trips are listed on a downloadable worksheet at rgvbf.org. (Look for the “Downloads” tab at the top of the home page.) There is a $25 registration fee to participate, then there are separate fees for different field trips, seminars and workshops. The Kiskadee Pass ($30) will also be offered as a blanket online registration to cover all seminars and workshops. The festival offers local field trips and seminars for everyone – from beginning birder to those who have made birding an avocation. Birding field trips that may interest the beginner include the “Birding 101 Workshop”, led by Jennie Duberstein, or “Bird ID Simplified” with Steve N.G. Howell.

The “Birding 101” workshop will be a combination of classroom tips and field trip application and will be hosted at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center. Leader Jennie Duberstein, a former education and outreach specialist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other organizations, as well as co-leader of the ABA’s Camp Colorado and VENT’s Camp Chiricahua will be the guide for this trip. On the “Bird ID Simplified” trip participants will spend time in the field with Howell relating what they see to his 12-step ID framework. They will not be looking for specific target birds, just looking, watching, listening, learning and getting an opportu-

nity to practice identification methods. The festival has also planned trips for those who are less mobile or who don’t want to do a lot of walking, but still want to enjoy seeing the birds. “Easy (But Not Less) Birding” offers trips to a different destination each day, including Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park (Thursday), Estero Llano Grande (Friday), Resaca de la Palma (Saturday), and Santa Ana NWR (Sunday). These trips offer birding in electric carts or special access van tours that loop the backroads of these famous Valley refuges. “Big Easy Birding” is designed for those who have difficulty climbing in and out of vans, or who use a personal mobili-

ty device, but want to enjoy the benefits of birding in a group with a guide. This series of field trips offers excursions Wednesday through Saturday, going to a different birding hotspot each day. There are even trips for butterflying, such as the “Butterflies – RGV Jewels” trip, giving participants the chance to be part of a tour led by lepidoptera experts at the National Butterfly Center south of Mission. All field trips have a separate registration fee, and reservations must be made in advance. Those interested are encouraged to register early, as these trips are very popular and fill up fast. Birding checklists will be available at the festival, as well as birding guides and other books by experts in the field. One may even be able to purchase some binoculars right there at the festival from the makers of some of the world’s best optics. Avid birders know that the Rio Grande Valley is paradise; there can be no better description. There are nine different World Birding Centers strewn across South Texas from South Padre Island through Hidalgo County and on to Roma in Starr County. For those who are novices – or those who have yet to begin – the process is easy during the RGV Birding Festival. Birding is a huge deal in South Texas. In 2013, the rare Amazon Kingfisher was spotted during the festival along Highway 107 in Cameron County and it caused quite See BIRDING pg. 3

From pg. 2 a stir, big enough for the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department to send deputies to direct traffic. One thing is for sure, nobody can predict what rare species may show up this year at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. In fact, due to all the tropical storms and hurricanes in the Gulf and Atlantic, there could be some new or rare birds around South Texas. Rosemary Mosco and Steve N.G. Howell will highlight the event as the keynote

speakers. Mosco’s presentation is entitled “Giving Science Wings: Comics for Bird Conservation” and will be held at 6:15 p.m., Thursday. Mosco is the creator of the comic “Bird and Moon” and author of kids’ books on science. She will discuss the funny side of birds, “from vomiting vultures to awkward sage-grouse to cavorting birds of paradise.” She’ll also explain why comics are powerful tools for conservationists. Valley Symphony performs Harry Potter Halloween Concert

It’s not unusual to get dressed up for the symphony, but the Valley Symphony Orchestra is taking it to a different level as it presents its second concert of the season: “A Harry Potter Halloween” at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, located at 799 Convention Center Blvd. The second of five shows for the season, the orchestra is encouraging those who attend to dress up in their favorite Halloween for the “spooktacular” event. Maestro Peter Dabrowski is celebrating his 15th season as music director and conductor. He is a Warsaw, Poland native and has found his calling with exhilarating musical performances and as an educator in the Rio Grande Valley. He also serves as Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts, Professor of Music and Conductor of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Symphony Orchestra in Edinburg. Dabrowski is also a renowned guest conductor with critical acclaim and in high demand throughout Europe and the United States. Dabrowski said he chooses pieces for each concert that “are pleasing to our audience and to our musicians.” He added that if the musicians are inspired by what they are performing, the audiences will also be inspired.

Some of the pieces to be performed for the Harry Potter Halloween Concert include Weber/Custer’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” and Williams’ “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Before moving to the Rio Grande Valley, Dabrowski was the music director and conductor of the American University Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., the American Youth Concert Orchestra in Northern Virginia and the Chicago Philharmonic. He said he believes that familiar music is comforting and brings great memories while unfamiliar music is sometimes “difficult to accept.” “The important thing to remember is that all music affects us,” he said. “Music is the most universal language. It speaks directly to our hearts, minds, and souls. Music has the power to change lives.” Shows at the new McAllen Performing Arts Center are more dynamic than previous shows, thanks to the large stage (which can fit up to 300 musicians) and technology that’s provided. Large screens inside the PAC allow the audience to have great views of the performance. Video clips and photos enhance

many of the symphony’s pieces. “If we are performing a piece from Beethoven or Bach, we can show pictures of these artists and where they were from,” Dabrowski said in a press release. “It creates a new and unique experience for our audiences.” Following “A Harry Potter Halloween” there are three more shows, “A Touch of Frost” on Dec. 7, “Hooray for Hollywood” on March 1 and “The 3B’s: Beatles, Brahms, and Beethoven” to close the season on April 5.

“All of these concerts are important, with each one leading into the next,” Dabrowski said. “All of our programs are truly exceptional, because the Valley deserves the highest level of quality and we expect no less from the musicians we work with.” Tickets are $40, $50 and $60 per person and may be purchased at the McAllen Convention Center Box Office, online at valleyorchestra.org or at ticketmaster.com. From pg. 3 in numbers and upcoming reservations. Nobody was shouting it from the mountaintops last season, but all indicators were positive, even in mid-October. “I think we are going to be above the market average when it comes to residency this year,” said Rocky Ramirez, park manager at Alamo Palms Mobile Park in Alamo. “I think the increase in part is due to keeping our product upto-date and fresh. We’re always adding things and listening to what our residents enjoy.… I think we’re having a good swing upwards to the market.” Reason #2: Lower Cost of Living When it comes to selecting a region of the country to move to, northern retirees will generally choose from three areas – Florida, Arizona and South Texas. Nearly 40 percent of the Winter Texans surveyed for the study said they have lived in another winter resort area prior to South Texas, 60 percent of them living in Florida for one or more seasons. The Winter Texan report indicated that the “cost-of-living” reason for moving to South Texas increased significantly from the prior studies. That category had typically been ranked fifth as reasons to come to South Texas. However, for the most recent report, it shot up to the second most popular reason Winter Texans come to South Texas. “Residents would pay top dollar in

price with the same type of amenities and getting the same or better service down here,” Ramirez said. Others have echoed the same, some with personal testimony. “I know from personal experience that it’s much cheaper here than either of the other two places (Arizona and Florida),” said Linda VanRyn, general manager for Llano Grande Lake Park Resort in Mercedes. “We have so many people that say this place is the best kept secret there is.” VanRyn said that the resort did very well last year, peaking in January and February when the park was at 100 percent capacity. Reservations this year show another good year, and maybe better. “People are also feeling better about traveling to the Valley,” she said. “There was some stress for a while when people were worried about violence in Mexico but that seems to be less of an issue now.” SPI Sees Big Increase in Winter Texans The effect of the increase was not only felt at Winter Texan parks, but also by places and events that Winter Texans enjoy – like heading to South Padre Island, the best beach in Texas. “We could tell midway through the See WINTER TEXANS pg. 15

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

Wild By Nature by Luciano Guerra

Welcome to Wild by Nature. My name is Luciano Guerra and this is my weekly nature and wildlife column. As a photographer and a life-long Valley resident, I have been observing and photographing the Rio Grande Valley’s amazing diversity of wildlife for as long as I can remember. From the tiniest and most delicate of the Valley’s butterflies to alligators large enough to kill a man, I have seen most and photographed many of the different species of wildlife that we here in deep south Texas are so fortunate to have all around us. Over the years I have developed a passion for observing and photographing the unique, and all too often elusive, wildlife that inhabits the Rio Grande Valley. In the weeks and months to come, I will be using this column to share this passion with those interested in learning more about the birds, insects, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians that inhabit the South Texas thorn scrub as well as nature centers, backyards, parks, and other plac-

es in the Rio Grande Valley. I will be doing this in several different ways. For example, in each column I will be focusing on a different type or species of wildlife found here in the Rio Grande Valley and I will be sharing interesting facts about each of them. I will also include a photo I have taken of that particular species of wildlife and I will include a photographic tip intended to help those of you that enjoy photographing nature take better photos. I will also be using this column to share information on nature-related activities and events that will be taking place across the Rio Grande Valley, but especially at nature centers, state parks and national wildlife refuges. These include events such as the National Butterfly Center’s Texas Butterfly Festival and the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. Activities will include nature walks, outdoor yoga classes and other nature activities, many of which are offered for a minimal entry fee or for free.

In addition, I will use this column to share locations across the Valley where seldom seen or even rare species of wildlife have been observed. By doing so, it is my hope that those of you interested in seeing a rare or unusual species of bird, butterfly or other form of wildlife will have a better chance of observing one firsthand. And for those of you that keep a birding life list, this will increase your chances of adding one or more lifers to your list. So, whether you’re like me and you have a passion for all things wild, or you are simply looking for a nature-related activity to do each weekend, I hope that you will make it a habit to read this column weekly. I will strive to make it interesting, informative and entertaining enough for you to want to do just that. And if I can help you to appreciate the unique and amazing diversity of wildlife that inhabits deep South Texas just a little bit more, I will have succeeded in helping to keep the Rio Grande Valley wild by nature. Upcoming Nature Events Nature related events and activities coming up this month include: • Estero Llano Grande State Park 11th Annual Spooky Science Fest, Butterfly Walk, Fri., Oct. 19, 1:30 pm and Sat., Oct. 20, 6-10 pm. STC Theatre opens 2018-2019 season with Miss Holmes South Texas College (STC) Theatre kicks off its 2018-2019 season this month with Christopher M. Walsh’s play, “Miss Holmes”, inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The production will run from Oct. 1820 at 8 p.m. and will include a matinee at 2 p.m. on Oct. 21. Performances will take place at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts Black Box Studio Theatre located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd., in McAllen. Miss Holmes is a “fan fiction” which re-examines the Victorian world of Holmes and Watson by exploring the added obstacles faced by these two iconic characters if they were women. When an anonymous note sends a newlywed wife looking for help, Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson work to uncover the secrets surrounding a corrupt police inspector. But Holmes and Watson face far greater challenges than bringing the criminal to justice. Miss Holmes possesses one of the greatest deductive minds of her generation, but she chafes at the restraints imposed upon her by society. Dr. Watson struggles to make a difference at the only hospital in London that will hire female doctors. General admission tickets cost $5.

Tickets can be purchased one hour before the performance at the box office, or in advance online at https://kioskportal. southtexascollege.edu/marketplace.aspx . Click on the Online Box Office menu item to purchase tickets either for individual performances or for a season pass. For additional information about the show, or for group rates, call (956) 8722301 or email drodri72@southtexascollege.edu or jrodriguez@southtexascollege.edu.

BUTTERFLY From pg. 1

see 60 or more different species on any given day. Some of the terrain covered in the different field trips include tidal wetlands, riparian forest, brushland and prairie savanna, among others. Those who have taken part in past festivals and have experienced one of the most ecologically diverse areas in North America have discovered U.S. records, super rarities, subtropical strays and butterflies that are only found in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Registration for the event is $330 per person and includes: − Three days of workshops and field

trips with transportation and lunch − A welcome reception and orientation on Saturday, with a light dinner − Sunday’s Border Buttermilk Dinner at Fresco − Monday’s Keynote Speaker’s Banquet and silent auction to benefit educational programs People registered from 23 states and four countries last year to take part in the Rio Grande Valley event, which has earned recognition for its butterfly and birding spots. The area is home to more than 1,200 different plant species, 500 bird species, 300 butterfly species and more than 90 dragonfly species. Some of the field trips are provided only on one day. Others have been sold out, but there is still room to register. Following are the one-day-only events and a glance at some of the trips that were still available as of press deadline. Bryant’s Butterflies: Paul and Shelly Bryant began gardening more than a decade ago and established the 1.63-acre nature preserve to provide habitat for birds and butterflies – and more than 185

native plants. This is a Sunday only trip. Riverboat Ride ‘n’ Seek: This trip takes goes to a refuge property around La Lomita Mission, a historical site, and then to the Riverside Club, where Captain Johnny will take passengers on a Rio Grande cruise. This trip is the ultimate one for birders looking to add species to their Mexico and US lists. Far West: This trip leads to guided tour of the gardens at Falcon State Park in western Starr County. New park leadership is paying special attention to the small, but productive, butterfly gardens and 3-mile nature trail in this brushland habitat. Falcon also offers an opportunity to see uncommon birds, such as the Scaled Quail, Varied Bunting and Green Kingfisher. This trip will also visit the Roma Bluffs for a glance at its garden. Of course, each year the Texas Butterfly Festival holds its Community Day and this year is no different, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. Families can make their own Banana Brew, young naturalists can attend Butterfly U and other events such as “Wild Things” Arts & Crafts, Hunt the Hackberry Trail and Pin the Tail on the Swallowtail will take place. Vendors and exhibits will also be set up in the Visitor’s Pavilion and in the gardens for this day, during the peak of butterfly season. For a complete schedule of events and workshops and field trips, and to register, visit www.texasbutterflyfestival.com

Enjoy being King and Queen for a day at Le Peep There’s nothing better than unexpectedly getting more than you expect. Such is the case every time I visit Le Peep restaurant, located at 7700 N. 10th St. unit C in McAllen – no matter how high my expectations are. The restaurant uses the words “casual breakfast and lunch….” As far as the setting goes when you walk in, it is casual and perfectly relaxing. When the food comes out, however, you realize there’s nothing casual about these meals. I ordered the Farmer’s Burger, a burger topped with crispy bacon and a sunny side up egg on a brioche bun. Not only were the flavors abundant, the presentation was amazingly appealing. On the side I had maybe the best soup I’ve had in years – chicken tortilla, with two fresh slices of avocado on top. The soup not only came out at a perfect temperature (and looking stunning as well) but the cup of shredded chicken, corn and tortilla strips was delicious with rich and zesty flavors. Hints of pico de gallo and jalapeno excited my mouth – but it wasn’t spicy, just deliciously bold. Among some of the more rare items that you won’t find in abundance elsewhere in the Valley is Le Peep’s variety of Eggs Benedict – five of them. For those of you thinking this is just a snack with an egg on English muffin (usually the reason I don’t order it – I like BIG!), served only in mansions and five-star restaurants, Le Peep will rock your world. When the waiter put my daughter’s order on the table, I think we heard angels singing above – it looked heavenly. The way my daughter ate it reminded me of a magician

performing a disappearing act. After taking some photos and putting my camera away, poof! It was gone! The only clue there was food on our table was a touch of Hollandaise she missed wiping her mouth. Covered in a creamy Hollandaise sauce and a tantalizing sprinkle of paprika, the order was spread out over a skillet and the flavors were distinct and exquisite. The order comes with a side of “Mom’s Sassy Apples” and “Peasant Potatoes.” Finally I figured it out – yes, as described, you walk into a place to eat with a casual setting at Le Peep, but you walk out feeling like royalty. Le Peep offers a wide variety of items including sandwiches, skillets, crepes, salads, omelets and more. Go and enjoy a casual setting with royalty-like flavors. In fact, I’m going back today – I love getting more than I expect.

Museum honors Smethers family The Troy Wayne Smethers Sr. family will be recognized at a reception at the City of Alamo Museum on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The 6:30 to 8 p.m. event is part of the museum’s on-going recognition of longtime Alamo families who made important contributions to the development of the city. Both Smethers and his first wife, Jimmie Sue Laughlin, lived in Alamo most of their lives and owned the Rio Grande Studio, a professional photography business from 1981 into the first decade of the 2000s. The couple was deeply involved in the community, with Troy serving as an Alamo city commissioner from 1995 to 1999 and was a past president of the Lions Club. Sue was a charter member and later president of the Alamo Chamber of Commerce and also served on the Pharr Chamber of Commerce board. She served

Reservations were up at the parks. Now it’s official. According to the bi-annual Winter Texan Survey report produced by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the number of Winter Texans was 10.4% higher last season. That’s good news, not only for the RV resorts and local businesses that depend on Winter Texans, but for Winter Texans as well. When the RV and mobile home resorts are doing well, they can provide more of the amenities and activities that you all enjoy during your stay here. And, of course, with more folks staying in your park, you have more friends to share the fun times together. And that’s the reason why we’re so glad to see you each year. It just ain’t as much fun when you’re gone. Winter Texans know how to have fun and we’re glad you’re here! We look forward to dropping in at many of the park activities this season, and we want to know if your park is having a special event that we should attend. While we can’t attend every event, we’ll try to come by and take some photos for the Winter Texan Times paper and for our website: www.wintertexantimes.com, See PUBLISHER pg. 15

Invite them to come down for a visit and thaw out in South Texas this winter, where there’s always something fun to do and friends to share in the good times. For the events we can’t attend, ask your park photographer to email us some photos of your favorite park events, including dances, jams, pancake breakfasts, craft sales, quilting groups and, of course, volunteer service that so many of you do. We’ll put them in our online photo gallery for everybody to see and share. You can email us at news@wintertexantimes.com.

season that this was a good year in terms of the number of Winter Texan visitors we had either living or visiting the Island,” said Keith Arnold, director of the South Padre Island Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “There was probably a 20 percent increase in visitors. It was a great year….” RGV Activities Attract Winter Texans Having a wide range of winter activities available to participate in is another reason Winter Texans flock to the Valley. According to the Winter Texan report the activities that Winter Texans participated in include visiting flea markets (97.1%), historical sites (90.1%),

festivals (88.4%), musical performances, productions or jam sessions (87.8%), going to the beach (87.1%) and going to wildlife and nature refuges (83.9%). The Other #1 Reason “We hear that the biggest draw to come to the Valley – other than the weather – is the friendliness of the people in the parks. You’re going to know someone real soon if you come to our park,” Fanaselle said. “Plus there is so much going on here – it’s amazing all the things that are available within a 45-minute drive [or less.” “We really do hear that all the time from Winter Texans. Many of them have been to Florida and Arizona and they tell us that the people here in South Texas are so much friendlier. And the fact that the cost of living is much less in South Texas helps them enjoy more with their retirement income. The people and the businesses here truly do welcome Winter Texans – and look forward to them coming to the Valley each fall,” said Jim Brunson, publisher of the Winter Texan Times. The welcome mat is out for you, so come on down and enjoy your winters in deep South Texas.

RGV Vipers see big changes this season

Many Winter Texans come from Big 10 country where they love their sports, especially football and basketball. It’s not unusual to see clusters of Winter visitors scattered throughout the arena to watch the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the single affiliation G-League team for the Houston Rockets. Recently, some big changes have heightened the interest of local basketball fans – and the public in general, as if the traditionally high-scoring, playoff contending squad that has called the Valley home for the past 12 years wasn’t enough. Not only do the Vipers have a new coach, but they have a beautiful new arena. Joseph Blair and this year’s team will christen the new Bert Ogden Arena as home of the Vipers, who moved from their only other home they’ve known, State Farm Arena in Hidalgo. The Vipers home opener is Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, versus the Memphis Hustle, the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies affiliate. I’m looking forward to the season,” Blair said. “I also consider it an honor to be the first coach in the new arena. I’m excited to feel the energy in the arena and the Vipers fans.” The G-League, formerly called the D-League, or Development League, is filled with Big 10 players, some of whom

Winter Texans followed from schools like Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota or Michigan. Some Vipers players that may seem familiar with fans from the northern states include Cleanthony Early, from Wichita State University, Monte Morris, from Iowa State, or Darius Morris, from Michigan. This year’s schedule features a total of 50 games, including 24 home games at Bert Ogden Arena, 24 games on the road and two games at the NBA G League Showcase. The Vipers’ first road trip of the season is Nov. 9 at Memphis. Then, RGV returns home for a pair of games versus Austin and Stockton November 15 and 17.

Top RGV high school boys and girls will compete, east against the west, prior to the Vipers final regular-season home game versus Sioux Falls SkyForce. The Bert Ogden Arena will have an 8,000-seat capacity for Viper home games. The arena will feature a 20-foot by 40-foot hung scoreboard and digital ribbon board throughout the arena. Fans will experience a modern state-ofthe-art facility that will have 87 points of sale for concessions and six full bars. In addition to the traditional concession stands, three restaurants will also call Bert Ogden Arena “home.” These include; Taco Palenque, Il Forno Pizzeria and Kumori Sushi. “We are very excited about the Vipers finally having a permanent place to call home,” Vipers CEO Rene Borrego said. “Having 14 Friday and Saturday home games alone will be a huge difference maker for the organization. This is the best schedule the Vipers have ever had. We have been working hard to also improve the fan experience when they come to our games. We can’t wait to get started. Victoria Palms celebrates ballroom renovations

DONNA – Victoria Palms RV Resort Inn and Suites celebrated ballroom renovations with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September. New carpeting, soundproof walls, repainting of ceiling tiles and sconces along with a new hardwood floor, are all part of the ongoing improvements at the Winter Texan resort, restaurant and inn. The facility is used for events, shows and dinners for both non-residents and more than 2,000 park residents. “ELS has invested roughly $120,000 in our Grande Ballroom the past two years,” said Art Kalifa, Director of Sales and Marketing. “We are happy with the outcome of our ballroom.” Next on the wish list is focusing on the Victoria Restaurant. “I believe if we continue to produce year over year growth, the bosses will help us with the changes we are looking for,” Kalifa said. “The support from our customers is going to be the key to fueling these changes.” Victoria Palms is located at 602 N. Victoria Road.

Local officials gathered at Victoria Palms Resort recently to celebrate the ballroom renovations and improvements completed this year.

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you... Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 10:00am How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880, or go to this link http://www.pure-physicaltherapy.com/sciatica When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. When you register, you can bring a guest at no additional cost (we do this because many people request to bring their spouse or other family member).

Sandcastle Days at South Padre Island One of many reasons why Winter Texans enjoy coming to South Texas each winter is to spend a day at the beach. South Padre Island has many different events throughout the winter and one of our favorites is Sandcastle Days. This year’s Sandcastle Days was held October 4-7 at Clayton’s Beach Bar & Grill. Sand sculpture artists from around the world converge on South Padre Island to compete in this event, which has become a qualifying event for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting.

Texas Quilt Museum exhibits feature Kaffe Fassett, ‘Lights,’ and Millefiori

La Grange, TX—The Texas Quilt Museum presents three exhibits this fall, including one by a legendary artist and innovator Kaffe Fassett. They will run Oct. 4-Dec. 23. Texas Quilt Museum is located in La Grange, north of I-10 about halfway between San Antonio and Houston. Kaffe Fassett’s love of color imbues his designs in knitwear, needlepoint, and patchwork, as can be seen in the exhibit Bold By Design: Kaffe Fassett Quilts. It will feature 23 of his works from his prolific library of patchwork and quilting publications. Famous worldwide as a textile and quilt artist as well as teacher of design and color theory, Kaffe Fassett has published more than 30 books, sharing his craft with quilters around the globe. Next, Selections from Light Show by the Contemporary Quilt Art Association demonstrates that the quality of reflected light from textile sources can provide a special type of luster, with the finishing process of the fabrics imparting a subtle sheen. The 12 works in this exhibit demonstrate that quilting stitches often enhance the nuances of light seen in textile art. And finally, traditional quilters have long utilized hexagons in their creations. Our exhibit Dazzling Millefiori Quilts appeals to the resurgence of interest in this single-shape style. The museum is featur-

ing a unique selection of colorful hexagon-based quilts in this exhibit. All of the 14 works on display are based on designs from Katja Marek’s project book, The New Hexagon: 52 Blocks to English Paper Piece, with the artists hailing from California, Missouri, Nevada, and Texas. The Texas Quilt Museum is located at 140 W. Colorado St., La Grange, TX 78945. It is open Thursdays-Saturdays from 10 am-4 pm, and Sundays from Noon-4 pm. Visit TexasQuiltMuseum.org.
