Scientists in Europe have claimed a major breakthrough in developing practical energy fusion. The team, from the Joint European Torus (JET) in Oxford, managed to generate 59 megajoules of energy through nuclear fusion. This is more than double the previous record set in 1997, according to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). If fusion can be successfully recreated on Earth it holds out the potential of virtually unlimited supplies of low-carbon, low-radiation energy. megawatts of power). Based on the MAN E3262 (25.8 L), the MAN E3872 is a 29.6 L 12-cylinder four-stroke engine with spark ignition. The new engine produces 735 kW at 1,500 rpm. Length/width/height of the engine is 1760 x 1245 x 1410 mm and it has a dry weight of 2160 kg and uses the same crankcase as the E3262.

Aggreko’s new 1300 kW Ultra-Low Emissions Package is said to reduce up to 99% of all controlled emissions from generator exhaust streams. The package is tailored to fit any project situation and the Ultra-Low Emissions Package is designed to meet strict U.S. federal air quality restrictions for faster deployment and long-term use while significantly reducing environmental impact, reports Aggreko. The system’s emission levels are certified to be 90% lower than the best reciprocating engine and turbine available on the market, and 99% lower than the federal limits, says a report from the company. Aggreko’s Ultra-Low Emissions Package is designed to provide 1300 kW of continuous power output and comes equipped with a selective catalyst reducer (SCR) and an oxidation catalyst designed to convert carbon-monoxide into carbon-dioxide in a highly efficient combination. According to the company, the package cuts all controlled exhaust stream emissions by as much as 99%, which helps expedite air quality permits. The package is suitable for long-term use and allows for more equipment on-site, says Aggreko.

WORLD’S LARGEST PUMPED STORAGE-TOPOWER SYSTEM PROVIDED ENERGY FOR BEIJING WINTER OLYMPICS The State Grid Corporation of China has revealed that the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station, widely described as the ‘world’s largest’, was a key provider of electricity for the Beijing Winter Olympics event. The plant is located in Fengning County, Chengde City, Hebei Province and features 12 reversible pump-turbine generators, each with a total generating capacity of 300,000KW. The project has a total capacity of 3,600 000KW, and generates 6.612 billion KWh of energy capacity per annum, with an annual pumped power capacity of 8.716 billion KWh. The 12 units at Fengning offer a pumped capacity for 10.8 hours. The project involves 190 caverns, the largest underground factory in the world, and holds the record as the world’s first pumped-storage power station connected to the flexible DC grid, as a result of a connection made to the Zhangbeirou DC converter station. The facility’s connection to the Zhangbei Rou DC grid and the North China 500 kV power grid has helped to uphold the Beijing Winter Olympics’ boast of ‘being powered with green electricity’. The plant provides 600,000 KW to Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the host cities of the Winter Olympics. The integration enables the plant to participate in load regulation and regional stability co-ordination and control.
ARENA INVESTS US$100M IN GRID-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE AND ADVANCED INVERTERS
Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced AUS$100 million (US$72.5 million) in funding to support technology innovation and implementation. The investment is designed to speed up the energy transition through increased use of battery energy storage and renewable energy. The funding will be issued through ARENA’s Large Scale Battery Storage Funding Round to support research, development and testing of grid-scale battery energy storage systems which are integrated with advanced inverter technology to ensure more renewable energy capacity is injected into the grid for reliability, decarbonisation and resilience. The aid will be made available to battery energy storage projects of 70MW or larger operating in the National Electricity Market or Western Australia’s Wholesale Electricity Market. The aim of the funding is to incentivise and derisk private sector investment in energy storage and advanced inverter technologies. Lessons learned from the three projects that will be supported by ARENA will be used to provide insights on optimal operations of advanced inverters and how they can be used to enhance smart grid capabilities across Australia. Up to AUS$35 million (US$25.3 million) in grant funding is expected to be awarded per each project. IN BRIEF ENBRIDGE GAS IN H2 BLENDING PROJECT IN CANADA Enbridge Gas in partnership with Cummins Inc. has launched a CAD$5.2 million hydrogen-blending pilot in Markham, Ontario in Canada. The two companies are injecting hydrogen into natural gas at the Markham Power-to-Gas facility, which they developed in 2018 to store excess electricity as hydrogen for later use. Since then, the facility has been providing regulation services to help IESO balance the regional grid. The pilot is supported by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) and NGIF Capital Corporation and Hydrogen-blending with natural gas, which is delivered to some 3,600 consumers in Markham, will help Enbridge Gas reduce its carbon footprint by eliminating up to 117 tons of carbon dioxide per annum, the equivalent annual energy use by 14 homes.
CHEVRON LUBRICANT APPROVED FOR FOURSTROKES ENGINES WHICH SWITCH FUELS Oil is designed to control sulphated ash accumulation in combustion chambers and exhaust system. Chevron Marine Lubricant said its low sulphated ash trunk piston engine oil Chevron HDAX 9700 has gained time-unrestricted approval for use with MAN Energy Solutions’ four-stroke engines running on either LNG or distillate fuels (with a sulphur content of up to 0.10%). This approval is the first of its kind and offers simplicity for operators switching between the two fuels, meaning that they can use just one lubricant, rather than having to change lubricants after a fixed period operating on one fuel or the other, Chevron said. Other lubricants go through validation testing on engines running either gas or distillate fuels and are granted limited approval for the other fuel. Chevron HDAX 9700 secured its unrestricted dual approval due to its unique development. Chevron HDAX 9700 is an SAE 40 engine oil that is designed to control sulphated ash accumulation in combustion chambers and exhaust system, while providing sufficient alkalinity to protect against acidic corrosion. After 6,500 running hours, the approval for unrestricted use with distillate fuels was granted, making Chevron HDAX 9700 the first low sulphated ash oil to receive such an approval, the company said. Because low sulphated ash oils are commonly used with gas engines – which are also sensitive to sulphated ash deposits – MAN ES was also able to grant unlimited approval for the lubricant to be used when operating with LNG.
600KW ENERGY SOLUTION SYSTEM TO BE PROVIDED FOR A FOOD PROCESSING FACILITY IN MALI IN MAY 2022 Capstone Green Energy has received an order for a 600 kilowatt C600S energy solution system, to be installed at a remote food processing facility in Bamako, Mali. The order was secured through the Capstone Green Energy Direct Sales Solutions Team. The system, which will provide power to the site’s all-electric equipment, is expected to be commissioned in May 2022. Like many land-locked countries, Mali relies on expensive, ‘dirty’ fuels like diesel and heavy fuel oil. By contrast, the Capstone energy system will use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is a less expensive and more environmentally-friendly fuel alternative. “This project serves as a model for other industrial customers and power companies, showing they can quickly benefit from LPG as an alternative fuel,” said Gorgui Ndoye, Business Development Director for Capstone Green Energy. Since Capstone microturbine green energy systems are highly reliable, the onsite system will also address issues of load shedding and blackouts the facility currently experiences with utility power. They also require very little maintenance compared to other on-site power technologies like diesel generators, which further improves power availability and cost savings.

CHINA YUCHAI DEMONSTRATES ITS NEW HYDROGEN ENGINE China Yuchai International Limited, a manufacturer and distributor of engines for genset applications in China through its main operating subsidiary, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co. Limited (GYMCL), has a new H2 engine. CYI announced that the company’s latest YCK05 hydrogen-fueled engine achieved stable ignition and operation in a recent demonstration at the Beijing Institute of Technology. The YCK05 engine is the first operating hydrogen engine for China’s commercial market, China Yuchai reports. The achievement is the company’s latest hydrogen technology milestone, following the earlier introduction of Yuchai’s hydrogen fuel cell technology. The company said the YCK05 hydrogen engine reflects a number of advanced technologies, including high-pressure multipoint inlet air injection,
high-efficiency/low-inertia turbocharging and highefficiency lean burn combustion technology. There are also design upgrades to the engine structure and subsystems such as the combustion and gas distribution systems, China Yuchai said. Yuchai will use its experience and capabilities in the research and development of internal combustion engines to develop a process to transform hydrogen engine developments into largescale mass production. DOWNING ACQUIRES TWO HYDROPOWER PORTFOLIOS IN SWEDEN Downing Renewables & Infrastructure Trust plc has exchanged contracts to acquire two operational portfolios of hydropower plants located in central Sweden for approximately € 25 million. DORE has acquired a c. 12 GWh portfolio of hydropower plants from ÄSI Kraft AB located in the SE3 electricity pricing zone for approximately € 6 million and a c. 36 GWh portfolio located in the SE2 zone for approximately € 9 million from AB Edsbyn Elverk. The acquisitions have been largely funded through drawdown on its Downing Hydro AB (DHAB) Swedish hydropower portfolio debt facility signed in November 2021. The first portfolio comprises five hydropower plants located on three different rivers in central Sweden. The portfolio has an expected annual average production of c.12 GWh of electricity. The sites also benefit from a long operational history and are located in the county of Dalarna, central Sweden, in the attractive SE3 price area. The second portfolio includes four run-of-river hydropower plants situated on a single river in central Sweden. The portfolio has an expected annual average production of c.36 GWh of electricity. The sites benefit from a long operational history and were refurbished between 2010 – 2013. The hydropower plants are located in and around the Swedish town Edsbyn in central Sweden. The acquisitions increase the total number of managed Swedish hydropower plants to 17, with an nnual production of c. 157 GWh.

ENNIS, IRELAND - PLAN TO BUILD A €1.2 BILLION DATA CENTRE THE SIZE OF 22 FOOTBALL FIELDS
According to news reports published by CNN, the Irish government is poised to give approval for a €1.2 project ($1.4 billion) which involves building what would be one of Europe’s largest data centres. It will potentially be based in a country which is currently home to companies such as Google (GOOGL), Meta (FB) (Facebook), Intel (INTC) and Apple (AAPL), who each have European office here. According to a plan submitted by a Dublin-based company called Art Data Centres Ltd., the centre will potentially comprise six two-storey buildings and a massive 50,310 squarefoot energy centre powered by 18 lean burn natural gas engines and 66 diesel backup generators. The project also has plans to include installing extensive solar panels and rainwater harvesting. The development of information centres in Ireland has grown by 25% between May 2020 and May 2021 and they have contributed to 1.85% of the country’s carbon emissions over the past year. EirGrid notes that Irish data centres are so energy-needy that over the past four years, the power they required was the equivalent of adding a half a million homes to the grid to power them. Developers say the centre will create 250 permanent jobs and 1,200 temporary ones during construction, while also helping to diversify the tech sector away from Dublin, thereby reducing pressure on the capital’s power grid. Ireland’s tech industry now employs over 37,000 people and generates €35 billion ($39.5 billion) in annual exports with Dublin at the centre of those operations. Ireland has been growing in popularity as the ideal data centre destination over the past few years. There are currently 53 operational data centres in Ireland, with 8 more under construction and 26 with planning approval and are expected to double by 2025. The rapid growth of data centres is projected to increase over the years as more and more people become reliant on the internet to meet their daily needs. CHINA TO RECEIVE FIRST H2 FUELLED TURBINES FOR POWER STATION FROM GE AND HARBIN ELECTRIC CORPORATION LATER IN 2022 Guangdong Energy Group has ordered two 9HA.01 gas turbines from GE and Harbin Electric Corp for its Guangdong Huizhou combined cycle power plant in Guangdong province, China. Expected to burn up to 10 % by volume of hydrogen, blended with natural gas upon start of operation, the gas turbines will be the first to burn hydrogen blended with natural gas in mainland China. The project is expected to be operational in 2023 providing 1.34 GWe to the Guangdong province. Harbin will also provide steam for industrial processes at the chemical complex present in Huizhou. China’s energy policy includes a commitment to the coal-to-gas transition and reducing coal’s share to under 58% of the energy mix. Hydrogen-blended natural gas-fired generators have the lowest CO2 emissions of all fossil power generation fuels – a 10 % hydrogen-blended natural gas-fired combined cycle plant emits roughly 40 % of the CO2 of a similarly sized coal plant, and lower emissions levels for other pollutants such as mercury, NOx, SOx and particulate matter. A representative of Guandong Energy Group said: “This project will be foundational in promoting the use of hydrogen blending in power generation across other provinces”. Ma Jun, Utility Sales general manager of GE Gas Power China commented: “The units will initially operate on a blend of up to 10% hydrogen by volume, with potential for an increase in future.”

Motorenfabrik Hatz announced it has acquired the technology start-up Inecosys, a Munich, Germany, company specializing in the development of advanced control and electronics systems. Hatz said it has been pursuing a consistent innovation and technology strategy for more than 10 years and this step has secured more expertise and know-how concerning drive solutions of the future. Hatz confirms that its objective is to achieve a transition from being an engine supplier into a solution provider and it said it has taken several steps along that path in recent years. These include the development of its liquid-cooled H-Series diesel engines, its E1 electronic control technology, its Hatz fiPMG hybrid technology and the continuing development of its connected services platform. The Inecosys acquisition is the next building block to its innovation strategy, the company said. “At the moment, we are busy transforming ourselves from being a diesel engine specialist into an open technology drive manufacturer,” said Hatz CEO Bernd Krüper. “Even if our engines already meet the strictest exhaust emission standards and are the benchmark in their class, our long-term objective, apart from emission-reduced combustion engines, is in particular zero-emission operation for our drives.” The acquisition will further accellerate the transformation process of Motorenfabrik Hatz, confirms Dr.-Ing. Simon Thierfelder, chief technical officer at Hatz. “Inecosys is an agile company with a tremendous amount of knowhow in developing electronic as well as instrumentation and control technology for drive systems, equally specialized in hard- and software,” Thierfelder said. “As a result, we now combine technological leadership in the field of our combustion engine drives with the know-how and agile development processes of a technology start-up. TRACTABEL TO DEVELOP OFFSHORE ENERGY CENTRES FOR STORING HYDROGEN Tractebel and partner companies have developed the world’s first offshore infrastructure and processing facilities concept for the storage of hydrogen in offshore caverns. The design study, unveiled by Tractebel Overdick GmbH’s offshore experts, outlines an innovative solution for large-scale hydrogen storage on the high seas: a scalable offshore platform for the compression and storage of up to 1.2 million m³ of hydrogen. Underground salt caverns will be used as storage and buffer for the hydrogen produced offshore, before the gas is transported via the pipeline network to the onshore grid and finally to consumers and customers. Green hydrogen from offshore wind energy is becoming an important component of the global energy transition, but current hydrogen production technologies will only make an effective contribution if production rates reach an industrial scale. Enormous amounts of hydrogen (H2) from renewable sources will be required to supply future H2 energy demands and offshore sites are key to industrial-scale production. Tractebel pioneered an innovative solution to address this demand in 2019, with the development of a unique offshore hydrogen platform concept, followed by an optimised, scalable version the following year. EUROPE’S LARGEST BATTERY - A 360MW ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM TO BE BUILT IN THE UK Sembcorp Energy UK’s is planning on building Europe’s largest battery – a 360MW energy storage system at Wilton International on Teesside. As part of Sembcorp Energy UK’s growing battery storage portfolio, it intends to construct a 360MW battery, signalling a major step to further support the UK’s Net Zero targets, helping to ensure the resilience of the electricity network and further enable the increasing growth of renewables. At the Wilton International site, Sembcorp Energy UK has available land and connections ready to enable swift instalment of the batteries, which will be built in tranches. SEUK currently operates 70MW of batteries, with a further 50MW already in the pipeline and due to be operational in early 2022. As one of the UK’s largest battery portfolios, the units can supply power and other services to the national grid in a matter of milliseconds, and such rapid response time is crucial to maintaining a secure and stable energy system that will aid the UK’s low-carbon transition. The plans for both this battery portfolio expansion, and the first-of-a-kind 300MW net zero emissions plant – Whitetail Clean Energy – announced in July 2021, align SEUK’s growth with technologies that support a greener future. Should all these developments proceed, SEUK’s total energy portfolio would be expected to total over 1.6GW, with almost half a gigawatt being supplied by batteries. Whitetail Clean Energy is poised to become the UK’s first 300MW Net Zero Power station based on Teesside. The plant will generate approximately 300MW of clean power, available whenever it is needed, while capturing and storing its carbon emissions in secure geological formations deep under the North Sea.I will operate at competitive cost and efficiency to traditional gas power plants, reports Sembcorp Energy UK. The process combusts natural gas with oxygen, rather than air, and uses supercritical carbon-dioxide (CO2) as a working fluid to drive a turbine instead of steam. INNIO Waukesha Gas Engines has been selected to receive more than $2.2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The funding is part of ARPA-E’s “Reducing Emissions of Methane Every Day of the Year” (REMEDY) program that was unveiled earlier this year. The program aims to reduce emissions in the oil, gas, and coal industries and promote innovation and manufacturing of new technologies to achieve climate goals. ARPA-E has announced 12 funding awards totalling $35 million to develop and demonstrate technologies aimed at cutting emissions in the oil, gas, and coal sectors.

FIRST WAGABOX® LANDFILL GAS TO RNG PROJECT IN THE US CONFIRMED Waga Energy is joining forces with Steuben County (New York, USA) on a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project at the county’s Bath landfill. The RNG produced will be injected in the local grid and used as a biofuel to decarbonise mobility. The Steuben County landfill will be the first in the US to adopt Waga Energy’s WAGABOX® technology, already in use at ten landfills with an additional eleven facilities forthcoming in Europe and North America. On December 30, 2021, Waga Energy, a European expert in the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from landfill gas, signed a contract with Steuben County, New York for the development of an RNG project at a municipal solid waste landfill located in the town of Bath. Waga Energy will build a landfill gas upgrading unit using its patented WAGABOX® technology. Once completed, the unit will produce grid compliant RNG (also known as biomethane) from the methane generated by the decomposition of the waste in the landfill. The WAGABOX® unit will be commissioned by March 2023. It will purify 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute (1,600 cubic metres per hour) of raw landfill gas to deliver 207,000 mmBtu (60 GWh) of RNG. The facility will produce RNG that can be used for full residential use or as a transportation fuel, equivalent to supplying around 4,000 homes with clean, local, and renewable energy, saving an estimated 13,500 tons of CO2.

DEUTZ continues to expand its activities in alternative powertrains. The due diligence of Blue World Technologies was recently completed leading to the purchase of the first of two tranches. The purchase of the second tranche is expected to follow in the first half of 2022, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval. DEUTZ will be investing a total of €7.5 million to take an 11.91% stake in the company. Blue World, which is based in Aalborg, Denmark, develops, manufactures, and sells fuel cell stacks, reformers, and systems. The collaboration is centered around an exclusive agreement for the distribution and servicing of stationary fuel cell gensets that will be powered by methanol. “The investment in Blue World Technologies, is a perfect fit for our sustainable growth strategy,” says DEUTZ’s CEO, Dr. Frank Hiller. The investment of DEUTZ made together with an investment of Vaektsfonden, the Danish Growth Fund, will allow Blue World to set up further automated handling processes throughout production over the course of 2022. These will increase its production capacity with a view to commencing volume production toward the end of next year. Dr. Frank Hiller comments: “At the DEUTZ Days 21 in November we unveiled our new ‘Green’ reporting segment to the public. We also presented the Blue World products to our customers. The interest we have been able to generate from this event has been overwhelming. Fuel cells which run on ‘green’ methanol will enable a faster transition to carbon-neutral operation because this is a liquid fuel compatible with existing infrastructure.”

oday, Hitachi Energy powers more than 200 energy storage and microgrid projects around the world, with 700MW of storage currently under management, explains Maxine Ghavi, SVP, Head of Grid Edge Solutions. Widespread renewable energy adoption has changed the way we think about modern microgrid applications. New applications are driving new use cases for microgrids, from remote regions with extreme conditions who are not connected to the main grid, to urban stadiums with critical power reliability needs. According to IEA, 13% of the world (940 million people) still do not have access to reliable sources of electricity, and access is especially limited in remote communities and regions with extreme environmental conditions. some cases ten times as much for equivalent electricity from larger grids. DIESEL GENERATOR SETS NOW APPROVED FOR USE WITH HYDROTREATED VEGETABLE OIL FUEL

ummins Inc. has announced approval for its entire line of diesel generator sets for use with
hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), when used in standby applications. This announcement comes as part of Cummins overall commitment to develop innovative solutions that enable decarbonization, and proactively advance the company’s current technology to achieve industry leading emissions. “Our customers are continuously making advances towards decarbonization and Cummins is committed to helping them achieve their sustainability goals. The ability to run generator sets on HVO fuel supports these goals by lowering their carbon footprint.” said Vipul Tandon, Executive Director, Global Power Generation. HVO is derived from the same feedstocks used to produce biodiesel, however, it is produced via a hydrohelps improve its oxidation stability. It has a very low life cycle carbon emission, making it attractive as a sustainable fuel. Constituent emissions are equivalent to or lower than they are with diesel, and existing while operating generator sets on HVO. Additionally, it is not prone to bacterial growth making it suitable for applications that require extended fuel storage, including backup power standby applications. The engine is designed as a four-stroke spark-ignition gas engine with a displacement of 29.6 litres, a bore of 138 mm and a stroke of 165 mm. With the 735 kWmech it produces, MAN Engines is higher power output. At the same time, the engine manufacturer from Nuremberg, Germany, is remaining true to its philosophy of achieving high power density. Thus, the new MAN E3872 series is based on the proven and compact platform of the 25.8-litre MAN E3262. “MAN Engines is synonymous with robust engines which take up very little space. The natural gas variant of the turbocharged E3872 engine achieves nitrogen oxide values of 250 mg/Nm3 NOx (5% O2), whereas the biogas variant achieves 500 mg/Nm3 NOx (5% O2). INCREASING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF BACK-UP POWER GENERATION SOLUTIONS
T
he COP26 summit in Glasgow in November 2021 showed that most of the world has now accepted the reality of man-made climate change: that it will have very large and

Many data centres have been located to enable them to take advantage of low-cost energy generated from, for example, geothermal activity. Given our reliance on these data centres, though, they have also needed to include backup power sources to ensure 24/7 operation. Ironically, many of these have been diesel generator sets (gensets). way to use today’s technologies to meet today’s lowcarbon commitments, while also evolving them to suit the needs of tomorrow’s ever more stringent requirements. Diesel engine technology has been in development for more than a century, and is now driven, in part, by requirements to meet evolving emissions standards such as those of America’s environmental protection agency and the European Medium Combustion Plant Directive. A combination of careful engine design and the use of catalysis, and diesel oxidation catalysts, has helped suppliers meet or exceed the requirements of these regulations. Another way to change the climate impact of dieselmindful of the energy and climate impact of sourcing these fuels. For example, making the shift to biodiesels may cut lifetime CO2 emissions by up to 80%, at the cost of introducing a series of new challenges such as managing the stability of the fuels in storage, coping with their corrosiveness, and suppressing the ageing
diesel gensets can already use HVO fuels, as well another class of fuels that are made from processing waste cooking oils, vegetable oils, or animal fats. The fact that diesel engines have been in development and use for so long makes it unlikely that their evolution will end any time soon or that they will rapidly drop out of use. But in the mid-term, we do need alternative approaches to generating backup power, and in the short term, operators using these generators need to protect their brands by being seen to develop them. One option is to use hydrogen fuel cells. These use hydrogen gas, derived from electrolyzing water – ideally, using renewable energy – as their fuel. The gas is delivered in compressed form and is recombined in a fuel cell with oxygen in a process that releases energy and water vapour. Microsoft, which is trying to stop using diesel and become carbonnegative by 2030, has been experimenting with a 250kW hydrogen fuel cell back-up power system that can power 10 racks of servers for up to 48 hours. There are a couple of challenges with this approach. One is cost, although fuel cell costs have dropped about 75% since 2013 and therefore could soon be comparable with diesel gensets.
The second is the fuelling issue: it is estimated that running a whole data centre on fuel cells for 48-hours could demand up to 100 tonnes of hydrogen fuel. Microsoft personnel have also speculated that hydrogen fuel cells could also be used for load balancing on power distribution grids. By adding an electrolyzer and gas storage to the fuel-cell backup generator, excess power on the grid could be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The energy stored by this process could then be released again when the grid approached peak load. Kohler has seen the potential of fuel-cell technology and is now developing a prototype 60 kW hydrogen generator using polymer electrolyte membrane technology. But it doesn’t expect the technology to be widely deployed for at least a decade. Batteries are already used as part of sophisticated uninterruptible between a loss of grid power and the point at which diesel gensets have reached generating speed. Research is now underway to scale up battery farms, improve their energy density using enhanced lithium-ion chemistries, and charge them using renewable energy, in a bid to provide another alternative to diesel generators. kohlerpower.com [below: KOHLER Power Frame]

Or put another way - can we combine technology and generational knowledge transfer to reach Battery Maintenance 4.0 In this second article from Paul Smethurst of Hillstone Loadbanks he goes back to the pre-pandemic and reanalyses the presentation he gave at the 2019 NIBS Battery Conference. While this article is not going to list all the maintenance procedures this as Battery Maintenance 1.0 It took 80 years and the advent of the ‘maintenance-free’ sealed Value Regulated Lead Acid ( VRLA ) battery, to advance into Battery Maintenance 2.0, but this was not without issues, such as: “Why does a maintenance-free battery need maintenance?” and “How can it be sealed if it need a breather valve to release the build-up of gases?” But in comparison, BM2.0 was a big improvement to BM1.0, especially as VRLA didn’t need to be topped up and live in a wet room ( with sulphuric acid splashing about all Note: North America grid and some European & Middle East telecom companies retain open-vented batteries and perform detailed maintenance to retain the design life in operation. The implementation of VRLA however did not go without issue and with this design came the loss of capacity over its design life which created the need to perform discharge testing. It didn’t take long to move towards Battery Maintenance 3.0 which has been in existence now for 30 years with the development of battery monitoring systems, and battery conductance, impedance and resistance meters and systems. All these technologies are based on historical trending of data which requires the experienced interpretation to anticipate when to replace the battery before it fails. I’m sure they all claim they are the one to use,
but a load bank discharge test is the method to determine the capacity and true age of the battery. Lead acid batteries are still very sustainable with 95-98% recyclability, but with the threat to reliability now being seen from commoditising the battery production and sales the perception to replace rather than to to valuing the loss of power to the loss of service. The introduction of VRLA batteries has seen the an increase in their mass production in order to sell in volume a low cost product. The premature failure, but that can also be seen in higher quality products as well, especially if maintenance is not correctly performed. n the back of record orders, emissions control specialist Eminox has outlined its future expansion and growth strategy for 2022. To meet the needs of its increasing global customer base it will strengthen its manufacturing capacity by adding a new site in Slovakia alongside headquarters in the UK. Under the plans, the Gainsborough site will focus on manufacturing specialised exhaust aftertreatment systems (EATS), becoming the centre of excellence for Eminox’s fast-expanding marine business and noninternal combustion engine (ICE) technology. To free up capacity for this expansion some highvolume manufacturing production will move to a new, purpose-built 5,700 m2 factory that will open in Slovakia in 2022. Gainsborough provides a base for Eminox’s global headquarters, and the senior leadership team guarantees that no role will be lost from the site as a result of the expansion from 2021 - 2022. With the considerable work that Eminox is currently bidding for the company does not anticipate this changing in 2023. THE INCREASING USE OF HYBRID SYSTEMS WHICH COMBINE BOTH BATTERY AND ENGINE POWER
M
ecc Alte’s Miles Revell looks at how they can help clients develop industry-leading hybrid systems. With pressure on operators of industrial equipment to reduce their carbon footprint in line with government mandates, there is an increasing use of hybrid systems which combine both battery and engine power. Traditionally, hybrids tend to minimise engine run alone. The engine runs for brief periods to charge the battery ready for the next duty cycle. al cost savings by optimising fuel consumption and increasing the autonomy of the equipment. But the additional cost of large capacity batteries can also mean that higher capital expenditure on equipment is needed to access the operational savings. In addition, some equipment is simply not suited to this type of operation, especially where actual duty cycles can be short and infrequent. In these circumstances, converting to a full electric solution may be attractive. However, many types of equipment operate in areas where access to suitable mains charging infrastructure is neither available, nor viable. For equipment that operates within such constraints an alternative type of hybrid option is rapidly gaining popularity: ‘Hybrid Assist’. The basic components of a Hybrid Assist system are virtually identical to a traditional hybrid system. A variable speed engine to provide power, a battery to store energy, a Permanent Magnet DC Alternator to provide electrical energy to both the load and the battery, and an intelligent control system that’s capable of controlling both the engine and the hybrid system. The way in which these components work together is a traditional hybrid system. The engine is expected to run for much longer periods to both supply the load and recharge the battery. In some cases, the engine may even be running constantly. Although the battery may be used on its own as a power source, it is normally used to boost the energy available to the load during peak demand. This means that battery capacity is relatively small in relation to the load, as a typical autonomy period on battery could be as little as a few minutes. As the engine and PMG alternator alone are not normally big enough to handle peak demand on their own, they are reliant on the battery to assist at such times.

By the same token, the battery may also be unable to handle peak demand on its own, relying on the part of the load. The Hybrid Assist solution helps operators to not only reduce their emissions but also to maintain the equipment’s expected operational delivery. Generally, a smaller and cheaper engine can be used, which reduces overall fuel consumption and – if carefully sized - may also avoid the need for expensive aftertreatment packages. The availability of a pure battery-only mode can bring further operational advantages to the equipment, and reduce fuel consumption even more. The use of capital equipment costs. A multi-stage and safe recharge is achieved. As the operator increases the load on the equipment the controller increases the engine speed to match both the required level of battery charging and load demand. Further increases in load eventually see the engine and PMG reaching their operating output limit. If the load increases even more, the intelligent controller allocates more power from battery charging to the load. During peak demand periods all the available engine power is fed to the load and, in addition, the battery is discharged into the load to cover the shortfall. As the load is reduced the intelligent controller automatically controls the battery recharge and will reduce the engine speed to suit constantly changing load requirements as the battery is charged. www.meccalte.com

The ADE welcomes energy bill rebate but notes that without a further plan, it is a ‘sticking plaster’ in the face of long-term challenges. - Low carbon heat networks and energy efficiency need to be rapidly scaled-up to protect consumers from future price fluctuations and permanently reduce energy demand. The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) supports today’s announcement of measures to ease the burden of high energy prices for households, but warns the government needs to do more to address price impacts now and to implement real and lasting solutions, such as heat networks, to cut energy demand. Following Ofgem’s announcement that it will be increasing the energy price cap from a previous limit of £1,277 a year for an average household to the new level of £1,971, the government has unveiled a series of mechanisms to offer financial support to struggling consumers as their bills are ramped up. Although it welcomes the commitment to offer a £200 rebate on household energy bills, as well as a £150 pound council tax rebate, the ADE notes these mechanisms are only ‘sticking plasters’ and will do nothing to avoid the long-term impacts of rising energy costs. The ADE is also concerned that all domestic energy customers will only receive support towards the end of the year, despite many households already struggling to manage their rising bills this winter. Ultimately, the UK would not be in this situation if low carbon heat networks, a sustainable and affordable no-regrets option to reduce reliance on gas, were sufficiently supported and widely deployed across the UK’s towns & cities..

Commenting on the release of the Levelling Up White Paper, Guto Davies, Head of Policy at ACE said: “While the ‘12 national missions’ are welcome to drive activity and ensure spending remains both targeted and on track, they are nothing without properly structured long-term financing for local government to realise these political ambitions. Our concern is that the current approach remains too compartmentalised to be truly effective. “We do, however, welcome the longer-term view on levelling up. The truth is there is no panacea and only sustained investment over the longer-term will address systemic and chronic issues.” “ACE is looking forward to continuing its role as a practical partner on levelling up, and will engage with the Government on the forthcoming Levelling up and regeneration bill which was previewed in the White Paper.” Commenting on the release of the Levelling Up White Paper, Peter Hogg chair of ACE’s places group, and UK cities director at Arcadis, said: “Our own proposals shared last November outlined a practical five-step process to deliver levelling up. While the White Paper has gone some way to enabling this, we still feel it is a missed opportunity for a rounded financial framework which allows all local communities to truly flourish.”

AMPS TECHNICAL COMMITTEE UPDATES: CHANGES TO FUEL & DUTY REGULATIONS - THE GOVERNMENT HAS UPDATED ADVICE If you have stocks of rebated fuel held to be used as contingency back-up which were obtained after 10 June 2021, or you cannot change from using rebated fuel for technical or safety reasons, you may be granted a licence by HMRC to continue using rebated fuel. 3.1 CONTINGENCY BACK-UP ELECTRICITY GENERATION Contingency back-up electricity generation means using back-up generators when necessary to make sure there is continuity of power. This does not include generators used as the main source of everyday electricity. It can also be commercial electricity generators, such as, those activated to manage pressures to the national grid and where a volume of back-up fuel is required to be held in reserve for security and regulatory purposes to maintain essential electricity supply.

REBATED FUEL IN STORAGE TANKS If you’re no longer going to be allowed to use rebated fuel from 1 April 2022 as a result of these changes, you should plan to use up stocks of fuel held in storage tanks ed fuel from your storage tanks.Please read the rest of this section carefully. 2. VEHICLES (AND MACHINERY) USED FOR BOTH ALLOWED AND NON-ALLOWED PURPOSES If you use a vehicle (including any machines or appliances) which is used for both allowed and nonallowed purposes after the rules change, you will need to either: • Flush out the tank to remove all traces of rebated fuel when switching uses • Use full duty paid diesel or biofuels

HSE has issued a safety notice following an investigation into an explosion of a high voltage (HV) circuit breaker. The recent investigation indicated that maintenance may have been a causal factor. The incident resulted in catastrophic failure of the HV circuit Maintenance of HV and low-voltage (LV) circuit breakers typically involves both the cleaning and lubricating of the operating mechanism. The HSE investigation found that the same product was used for both maintenance activities, but evidence shows that the product was only suitable for cleaning and not lubrication. It is essential that the correct product is used for each task. EFFECTIVE IN MOST HYDROCARBON-BASED LUBRICANTS Cortec says its newest lubricant additive offers advanced corrosion protection and compatibility for ashless oil systems. Cortec M-535 additive is suited for gearboxes, turbines, and other lubricant systems at risk for corrosion from trapped water or moisture condensation. Corrosion can mean downtime and ultimate failure on these critical components, and M-535 is designed to counter these setbacks with two important features for corrosion protection in ashless systems, the company said. The first important characteristic of M-535 is its vapour-phase action. Traditional corrosion inhibitor additives can only protect the metal surfaces in direct contact with the oil to which the inhibitor has been added, Cortec said. This leaves a large percentage of the system unprotected as, for example, gearboxes are often only half-filled. M-535 adds an extra dimension of protection in the form of vapor phase corrosion inhibitors. These molecules vaporise out of the treated oil, diffusing throughout the headspace to form a protective molecular corrosion inhibiting layer on metal surfaces above the fluid level, according to the company This makes corrosion protection economical, efficient, and thorough, even at a low dose or with minimal oil in the system. M-535 was designed specifically with the needs of ashless oils in mind and a heightened understanding of ashless performance requirements, the company said.
