Many of the world’s largest companies are among hundreds of business leaders appealing to the G20 to collectively agree to strengthen their national climate targets at the pivotal G20 and COP26 talks. Following the “code red for humanity” warning recently issued by the UN, the businesses, representing over US$2.5 trillion (£1.8 trillion) in revenue and employing more than 8.5 million people worldwide, signed an open letter to the G20 leaders. The signatories, which include Unilever, Netflix, Volvo, Iberdrola and Natura & Co, span sectors from power generation, transport and construction. Businesses are urging the world’s biggest economies to deliver on the existing commitment to US$100 billion in climate finance annually for developing countries, to end fossil fuel subsidies by 2025 and to put a price on carbon. “Our businesses recognize the benefits of climate action,” the signatories said in the letter, published before G20 leaders meet in Rome, and the COP26 climate talks begin. “The right policy decisions taken today can drive further investments and spur business decisions in WE MUST TAKE ACTION favour of climate solutions across TO ENSURE WE CAN G20 countries.” Among the calls from business COLLECTIVELY HALVE leaders was an immediate end to new coal-power development and GLOBAL EMISSIONS financing with plans for phasing out coal-fired electrcity generation by BY 2030. 2030 for advanced economies, and 2040 for other countries. “It’s essential that governments take confidence from this letter – the biggest and most ambitious call for policy action from business that we’ve seen - and step up their climate action plans,” said María Mendiluce, CEO of the We Mean Business Coalition, which co-ordinated the letter. “Ahead of COP26, countries should renew their national plans and turn them into concrete policies as outlined in this letter. Decisive government and business action can trigger a transition of our energy system to help build a resilient, carbon-free future.” The letter, which remains open for companies to sign over the coming month, also calls for scaling up electrification of transport and renewable energy across sectors, including removing barriers to corporate purchasing of 100 per cent renewable electricity to “enable companies to go quicker in their clean energy transition”. A recent analysis by the Climate Action Tracker found that no G20 country is currently on track to contain global warming to the 1.5ºC target. G20 countries represent approximately 90 percent of global GDP and almost 80 percent of global trade and greenhouse gas emissions. The letter comes alongside a groundswell of public support for increased government climate action and follows a recent call for greater climate ambition from 587 investors with $46 trillion in assets under management.

BLACKOUTS PREDICTED FOR AFGHANISTAN AS WINTER COMES Afghanistan’s capital could be plunged into darkness as the winter sets in because the country’s new Taliban rulers haven’t paid Central Asian electricity suppliers or resumed collecting money from consumers. Unless addressed, the situation could cause a humanitarian disaster, warned Daud Noorzai who resigned as chief executive of the country’s state power monopoly, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, nearly two weeks after the Taliban’s takeover on Aug. 15th, 2021. “The consequences would be countrywide, but especially in Kabul. There will be blackouts and it would bring Afghanistan back to the Dark Ages when it comes to power and to telecommunications,” said Mr. Noorzai, who remains in close contact with DABS’s remaining management. Electricity imports from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan account for half of Afghanistan’s power consumption nationwide,
with Iran providing additional supplies to the country’s west. Domestic hydropower production has been affected by this year’s drought. Afghanistan lacks a national power grid, and Kabul depends almost completely on imported power from Central Asia. Fortunately , the Taliban are no longer attacking the transmission lines from Central Asia. With industry at a standstill and military and government facilities largely idle, a much bigger share of the power supply ends up with residential consumers, eliminating the rolling blackouts that used to be commonplace. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

MARKET REPORT
OCTOBER 2021
DIESEL IS HERE TO STAY SUGGESTS THE LATEST MARKET REPORT FROM P&S INTELLIGENCE
Diesel to be Most Popular Fuel in Generator Market until 2030 According to a new report from Prescient & Strategic Intelligence (www.psmarketresearch.com/market-analysis/ genset-market) from $17,592.6 million in 2019, the global genset market is expected to reach $27,863.0 million by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of 5.8% during 2020–2030 (forecast period). The major reasons behind the advance of the market are the low production of power and uncertainties in the grid in several nations as well as the increasing construction of data centres. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the demand for gensets at a global level owing to temporary suspension of manufacturing activities across China, India, and several countries across Europe. In addition, severe ramifications could be seen on the supply chain of essential components for gensets across manufacturing units, which were heavily dependent on the Chinese plants for supply in 2020. Segmentation analysis of the generator market suggests that the
14

AMONG THE VARIOUS DRIVES FOR THE GENSET MARKET, THE GROWTH IN DATA CENTRES IS QUITE SIGNIFICANT. WITH THE BURGEONING AMOUNT OF DATA BEING CREATED AND CONSUMED, COMES A DEMAND FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WHICH SUPPORTS DATA ANALYSIS, COLLATION, & ACCESS. diesel genset category is expected to hold the largest share in the genset market till 2030, based on fuel. This is primarily ascribed to the wider availability of diesel in comparison to natural gas and petrol. Even though low-power gas gensets are cheaper than diesel variants, the poor supply of natural gas negatively affects their uptake. During the forecast period, the 376 kVA–750 kVA division, under segmentation by power rating, is expected to witness the highest CAGR in the market, on account of the rising number of commercial offices, retail super markets, and urban residential complexes, where these higher-power variants are required. The commercial classification, on the basis of application, generated
the highest revenue in the genset market in 2019, as a result of the increasing funding for public infrastructure advancement, rapid construction of smart cities, and growing in retail sector, on account of the surging consumer spending. Asia-Pacific (APAC) dominated the generator industry during 2014–2019, as the manufacture sector here is growing, primarily on account of government initiatives, such as Make in India, Made in China 2025, and Making Indonesia 4.0. Further, heavy investments are being provided to develop telecommunications infrastructure, and the demand for backup power is increasing from residential units. Due to its moderately developed power infrastructure, APAC generally uses generators for auxiliary power. Generator manufacturers remain keen to stay ahead of the competition. For instance, Cummins Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Atlas Copco AB, and Mahindra Powerol Ltd., and several other companies launched new gensets in 2018 to expand their portfolios. The new variants feature various improvements from older-generation products, which reflect the several challenges diesel as well as gasoline generators face, including strict environmental norms and competition from not only substitutes, but also other genset manufacturers. Similarly, several market players have entered into partnerships to develop and localize production, reduce their capital expenditure, and provide customised power solutions. Among the various drives for the genset market, the increasing construction of data centres is quite significant. With the burgeoning amount of data being created and consumed, the demand for infrastructure which supports data analysis, collation, and access is rising. The growing us of intelligent personal assistants, autonomous cars, digital currencies, internet of things (IoT), and accounting services means the need for data centres will surge. This will, in turn, drive the sales of generators, to serve the auxiliary and prime power requirements at such places. Backup controls, servers, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, security systems, and several other critical appliances require continuous power at data centers, for which gensets are essential. https://www.psmarketresearch.com/market-analysis/ genset-market www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

T
his year FRERK has fulfilled a contract for 16 x 3,112 kVA diesel generators with MTU engines and Marelli alternators for data centres located in Frankfurt, Germany. The contract involved providing a emergency power supply for a data centre in Frankfurt. Altogether, sixteen diesel units in soundproof containers (80dB(A) x 1m) have been supplied with an aggregate power of 3,112 kVA / 2,490 kW electr. 15 kV, 50 Hz suitable for ambient temperatures up to 45°C. Each genset features an MTU engine, 20V 4000 G34F, 3F (Data Centre Continuous). The equipment supplied includes features such a Marelli alternator, MJH 630LB4, 3200kVA, 15kV, a double-walled fuel tank mounted under the container with a capacity of 35,000 litres, an overflow tank, fuel cooling and filtering in the container. FRERK undertook the contract from planning to commissioning. The Series 4000 has been designed for power generation continuous/prime/grid stability applications with water-to-air charge air cooling. Wherever there is a demand for utmost reliability, ease of maintenance and compact dimensions, Series 4000 engines are amongst the first choices. Another typical advantage of the 4000 engine is its high efficiency which is based not only on low consumption but also on the relatively low price and a long service life, says the manufacturer. Each gengine features Individual 4-valve cylinder heads with centrally located injectors. The design allows high cylinder pressure and low fuel consumption, low exhaust emissions. The exhaust system has a triple-wall water-cooled manifold offering low surface temperature and reduced heat transfer to cooling system; it is said to be absolutely gas-tight. Each engine offers sequential turbocharging with charge air cooling (turbocharger cut in and out). This means that turbochargers can more closely match and respond to the engine airflow requirements. Series 4000 diesel-powered generator sets can be designed flexibly depending on the application and location. OCTOBER 2021
TURKISH HOSPITALS SAVE €400,000 A YEAR IN ENERGY COSTS THROUGH CHP
O
ver the past decade, the Turkish healthcare infrastructure has been continually expanded with new hospitals. Healthcare services must be continually improved in order to enable the best possible patient care and health support. To cover the growing demand for energy, the Turkish MWM service and sales distributor İltekno İleri Teknoloji Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. has installed and commissioned two combined heat and power plants for two hospitals of the Memorial Healthcare Group. One of the plants is equipped with an MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas generator set, and the other with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator set. An MWM TCG 3016 V16 generator set with an output of 800 kWel was commissioned in the Ankara Çankaya Hospital. Featuring an output of 1,000 kWel, the second generator set was installed on the roof of the Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital. The Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital is one of the few hospitals worldwide which has been awarded LEED certification, a system of the United States Green Building Council for the rating of green buildings. The certification was granted in view of the high energy efficiency which is ensured and perpetuated by the 4 installed combined heat and power plant with a powerful MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator set. The CHP plant at Memorial Bahçelievler Istanbul was installed on the roof; this posed a major challenge in terms of installation, design and safety. Vibration and sound levels played an important role in selecting a supplier for the project. Thanks to an insulated container, very low sound levels of 65 dB have been achieved at a distance of 10 metres. The installation of the CHP plant for the Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital was performed by İltekno within only 36 hours. As the hospital is located on one of Istanbul’s arterial roads, the project had to be planned well. Thanks to the quick and efficient work of the service team, the installation was completed in only one-and-a-half days instead of the usual 4–5 days. Thanks to the two gas generator set-driven CHP plants at the two hospitals, the Memorial Healthcare Group saves about €400 thousand a year in power and heating costs. Additionally, due to the high efficiency of the MWM gas generator sets, carbon emissions are expected to be about 20 percent lower. The well-being of hospital patients depends on an uninterrupted power supply and a reliable emergency
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
power supply. To cope with the growing number of patients despite limited capacities and rising fixed costs, hospitals are forced to save expenses. This is achieved by increasing the efficiency in certain areas, e.g. in the field of energy management, which comprises the general power demand as well as a building’s heating and air-conditioning. An analysis of energy-related weaknesses can help reduce energy costs by up to 30 or 40 percent. Once the weaknesses that are not related to cogeneration have been analyzed and eliminated, the facility can start planning the rollout of an internal cogeneration power plant. The use of cogeneration with natural gas optimizes the energy supply and reduces emissions, thereby providing environmental benefits. Generator sets of the TCG 3016 series feature a unique combination of efficiency and robustness. One of the key benefits is their remarkable efficiency, which is unmatched in their class. In natural gas operation, for example, the electrical efficiency reaches up to 43.5 percent. In the cogeneration of power and heat an overall efficiency of up to
90 percent can be achieved. Moreover, a low oil consumption of less than 0.1 g/kWhel and long oil change intervals make the operation of the gas gensets more economical. The operating period until the general overhaul is 80,000 operating hours for natural gas applications. The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020, generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliability. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same. Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas). Owing to their high reliability and profitability, the TCG 3020 generator sets with an output of 1,380 to 2,300 kWel are ready for the challenges of Industry 4.0. Thanks to the use of the digital power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management), the gas engines are able to reach their full performance for maximum plant availability, capacity, and usability. www.mwm.net WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER

POWEREX ABSTRACTS One essential purpose of PowerEx Live was to give attendees the opportunity to listen to a wide selection of top speakers deliver their papers on CHP/Genset issues. The following abstracts reflect the flavour of some the Conference topics: * TONY HANLEY - ACTIVE FIRE PRECAUTIONS ENGINEERING SPECIALIST One of the most well-attended lectures was about FirePro fire suppression technology. This is the current choice of numerous diesel generator / lithium-Ion / CHP / specialist enclosure manufacturers / UK DNO’s / M&E Contractors / Specifiers / Formula 1 racing teams for the protection of switch rooms, sub stations, transformer rooms, diesel generators, CHP plant, engine test facilities, and more, reports FirePro. FirePro is LPCB certificated and listed under the US EPA SNAP programme as an environmentally friendly product. Sold in 86 Countries, FirePro UK Ltd are delighted to join the PowerEx Live event. Manufactured in Limassol, Cyprus, FirePro is an all electrical EN/BS compliant system with no pressurised cylinders / over pressure venting, or mechanical pipework requirements, meaning capex & opex costs are slashed against the traditional legacy engineered solutions such as water mist or pressurised gas systems. * IAN WILCOXSON REGULATORY AND TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES Ian Wilcoxson is Data Centre Channel Manager (EAME) for Kohler Power. This lecture was ‘standing room only’ in its popularity. Ian explained how specifiers, consultants, contractors and facility managers often need to size and select standby generators for power protection. Recent technological and regulatory changes mean comfortable old norms may now deliver uncomfortably expensive, bulky or environmentally unfriendly solutions. In this presentation, Ian discussed recent regulatory and technological changes along with their impact on

By bringing together EUROPGEN members from all parts of the energy market, we strengthen bonds, promote cross-border trade and help deliver a stronger EU industry. * DAVE ANDREWS THE FUTURE OF CHP & THE OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD David Andrews, Conference Chairman, reflected at length on the possibility of using waste heat from Hinkley C nuclear power station to heat Bristol and Newport. Hinkley Point C nuclear powerstation (HPC) is a project to construct a 3,200 MWe power station with two EPR reactors in Somerset, England. Once in operation, EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C will generate 7% of the UK’s electricity – which is enough to power more than 5 million homes. So it’s vital that we use the best, most advanced technology available, says Dave, which is why they will be building two EPR reactors at Hinkley, each providing 1.6GW of power. EPRs – originally known as European Pressurised Water Reactors – are based on the best of tried and tested reactor design, enhanced with the most advanced technological improvements. The EPR is a type of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR). EDF already runs 58 PWRs in France, as well as Sizewell B in Suffolk, and in fact there are 277 successfully operating around the world. Power stations built with EPR represent a major development on previous PWRs, making them amongst the safest and most efficient power generators ever designed.

ENERGY STORAGE
OCTOBER 2021
2GW / 6GWH BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS FOR PROJECTS OPERATING IN CALIFORNIA
A
2GW / 6GWh of Tesla’s Megapack battery energy storage systems (BESS) has been supplied to California. US renewable energy company Arevon has signed a master supply agreement for 2GW / 6GWh of Tesla’s Megapack battery energy storage systems (BESS). Arevon is purchasing the Megapack all-in-one BESS solutions for use in the Falcon Portfolio, nine large-scale standalone battery storage projects in California which it is executing as a joint venture (JV) with independent power producer (IPP) Tenaska. According to documents filed with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which oversees California’s grid network and wholesale electricity markets, the Falcon Portfolio could be brought online from summer 2022 and the following summer and all the projects involved are at an advanced stage of development. Split across the service areas of California’s three main investor-owned utilities (IOUs), the BESS projects will provide up to four-hours of energy per day to meet Local Capacity Requirements (LCR). They can be charged with wind and solar from times of surplus renewable production which might otherwise be curtailed and go to waste, and - as has been seen with a number of other battery projects - replace the role of gas-fired generation. Both the Falcon Portfolio JV with Tenaska and Tesla supply deal build on long-standing relationships for Arevon: Tenaska and Arevon have already worked together on solar projects around the US, including in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market while Tesla’s Megapacks are already in use or being deployed at several Arevon projects. By the end of 2021, Arevon will have constructed and brought into operation 250MW / 1,000MWh of projects using Megapacks in California and Nevada. In California, one notable project brought online in June, is Saticoy, a standalone 100MW / 400MWh BESS which was developed and built using 142 3MWh Megapacks, after local community opposition to a new gas power plant. Saticoy went online just nine months after construction began and supplies power to IOU Southern California Edison (SCE) through a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). Like a gas peaker plant, it provides energy to the grid when local demand for energy is at its highest. Unlike a peaker plant, it doesn’t cause local emissions or pollution and the fuel it uses is abundant solar or offpeak grid energy not subject to gas pricing fluctuation. “Arevon is at the forefront of powering the energy transition through solar and storage resources. DATA CENTRES
OCTOBER 2021
EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLIED TO ONE OF EUROPE’S MOST IMPORTANT DATA CENTRES
G
enesal Energy has supplied two emergency generator sets to one of the most important Data Centres in Europe, located on the outskirts of the city of Munich, Germany. The gensets have been designed to guarantee constant power supply in the event of a mains failure or any other potential setback. Data Centers or Data Processing Centers (DPC) are complex facilities which hold modern computer equipment and where any failure in power supply can be a serious issue, as all the information contained in these giant servers would be left unprotected. For this reason, DPCs need continuous and constant power supply at all times. A generator set is its greatest guarantee of protection, which is where the client company turned to Genesal Energy to provide experts in installing generator sets adapted to these facilities. A company spokesman commented: “For this client specifically, at Genesal Energy we opted for made-tomeasure generator sets: we designed a bespoke energy solution. “The result translated into two generator sets distinguished by their low sound levels -as they must operate in a great office area- and the fact that they are leakage-proof against any polluting spills (diesel, oil and coolant liquid), as established by the strict environmental legislation in Germany.” During the manufacturing process, the gensets were placed into two 20-foot containers, with two air inlet and outlet baffles of 1200mm in length to lower the gensets’ sound levels by 30 decibels. Furthermore, the exhaust silencers were mounted inside the containers in order to isolate the sound outlet (certification was carried out by an external company). The sets provided were the GEN550PC + GEN850PC and the clients specified enerator sets with low sound levels, as they were to be located in the middle of an office area. Special features included with the gensets were: •Power panel integrated inside the generator set’s container. •Control panel integrated inside the generator set’s container. •Baffles system for -30db. External parts in stainless steel. •Motorised louvres. •Fuel tanks inside the of great capacity had to offer a considerable litre capacity.

•The tanks had to come with a with leakage collection tray. •These fuel tanks had to fully incorporate an automatic overfill protection system. •Container with liquid retention system. •Engine room heating to ensure startup in the cold. •Dedicated power outlet busbar due to the great number of conductors per phase. •Overvoltage protection. •GSM control. •Superficial coating of the container according to the ISO 12944 norm, in a C5I finish in the colour requested by the client. •Sound levels certified by an external company according to the ISO8528 norm: -Genset 1: 66 dB at 7m -Genset 2: 68 dB at 7m The diesel GEN550PC has a frequency: of 60 HZ and Power: L (396-940kVA) A Soundproof model (KVA: 550/440) with Three-Phase Voltage, is is powered by a SCANIA DC13 072A (02-13) engine. The power generation engines from Scania are based on a robust design with an optimised cylinder block containing wet cylinder liners, which can be exchanged easily. Individual cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder promotes repairability and fuel economy (picture left). The engine is equipped with a Scania-developed Engine Management System, EMS, to ensure the control of all aspects related to engine performance. The injection system is based on electronically controlled unit injectors, which provides good fuel economy and a high torque. The
engine can be fitted with many accessories such as air cleaners, PTOs and cooling package, to suit a variety of installations. The genset provides PRP/STP (kVA): 500/550, Emerg. STP (kVA/kWe): 550/440 , R.P.M.: 1800, 4,218kgs, offering Voltage (V): 480/277 - 440/254 - 380/220 - 220/127 208/120. The diesel GEN880HC-IN, on the other hand, uses a MITSUBISHI S12A2-PTA engine. Efficient and low maintenance Mitsubishi SA-series engines are fuel efficient because of Mitsubishi’s original direct injection system and turbo. Routine maintenance has become easier than ever before, with increased intervals for changing the oil. New materials in the exhaust system have a positive effect on durability (pic below). This set’s specifications are as follows: Frequency: 50 HZ, Power: XL (826-3900kVA). A Soundproof model (KVA: 880/704), this offers PRP/STP (kVA): 800/880, Emerg. STP (kVA/kWe): 880/704 and produces a voltage of 400/230 - 415/240 380/220. www.genesalenergy.com www.scania.com www.det-mitsubishi.com

OIL MAINTENANCE
OCTOBER 2021
TACKLING THE KEY OIL MAINTENANCE ISSUES IN POWER GENERATION EQUIPMENT
P
roactive maintenance is central to maintaining the performance of stationary gas engines in power generation applications, which is why operators are utilising reliability teams to get the most out of their engines. This is the opinion of Terry Veenstra and Clinton Buhler, senior technical services advisors, HollyFrontier Lubricants & Specialties, which includes the PetroCanada Lubricants brand. One aspect of proactive maintenance to consider is the lubricant which operators put into their stationary gas engines. Lubricants are the foundation of a regular maintenance program, and when maintained proactively, can contribute significantly to the efficient operation of a power plant, and ultimately to a company’s bottom line. Lubrication specialists can offer support in getting the most out of the lubricant, but it’s important for operators, mechanical and reliability staff alike to have an understanding of common maintenance issues found in power generation facilities and what can be done to solve them. Degradation and contamination of the engine oil can impact performance and potentially lead to significant unplanned downtime. The presence of contamination in the oil from either internally generated wear or external ingression can interfere with the oil’s ability to lubricate engine parts or cause excessive wear. The measure of oil cleanliness relates to the level of particle contaminants present in the oil, including both insoluble and hard particles, which are often not visible to the naked eye but are still large enough to cause abrasive wear. An effective filtration system can help the oil contents maintain low levels of particulate and degradation byproducts. Visually inspecting the oil filter media can also help identify wear particles that are too large in size to be measured though an oil analysis program’s typical elemental analysis. There are situations where the factory-supplied full flow filters may not have the efficiency or capacity to properly remove the contaminants. In these situations, secondary filtration such as slipstream or kidney loop systems may be required. Operators are actively looking for efficiency gains, such as extending oil drain intervals. Drain intervals are typically aligned to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) recommendations, so it’s important that any major changes to drain intervals take into consideration
34
WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
reliability, mechanical maintenance, operations and the recommendations of oil supplier technical services advisors, as long as the changes are in alignment with the OEM guidelines. To safely extend drain intervals, operators should have clear evidence that engine protection will not be compromised by any changes made. The process of optimising oil drain intervals or extending equipment life requires informed decisionmaking. Maintenance practices, such as borescope inspections and regular used oil analysis will allow operators to make the right decisions based on the recommendations of technical experts. A borescope is a digital imaging device that can provide visual inspections of engine internal components to assist in documenting cleanliness and wear within the engine and can identify potential problems before they become catastrophic. For example, if an engine is experiencing premature valve recession, the borescope can capture images of the combustion chamber, including valve face profiles, giving insight to the amount of ash or carbon buildup present and evaluate the amount of wear on the valve face. The borescope inspection
documents are vital for determining the condition of the chamber, piston and liner wear and cleanliness. Technical experts can make recommendations based on what the borescope identifies. Used oil analysis programs involve gathering usable data from the engine’s oil, and analyzing it to make informed decisions. Samples from equipment, using the correct procedures and analysed using the proper industry standard methods, offer an insight into lubricant performance and engine health by identifying wear metals and contaminants and trending the levels of physical and chemical properties of the oil. These practices provide valuable insight into how an engine oil is performing, but the crucial next step is to interpret this information effectively, which is where the expertise of trained analysts can be invaluable for power generation operators. For example, oxidation and nitration oil degradation is inevitable in stationary gas engines, but by monitoring the rate of degradation, properly trained technicians will be able to recommend that the oil is replaced before condemning limits are reached as set out by the OEM. www.hollyfrontier.com www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

ADE RESPONSE TO BEIS’S U P BLICATION OF R P OPOSALS FOR HEAT NETWORK O Z NING
Earlier this month the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) published its proposals for heat network zoning. The ADE commented as follows: Amy Ritchie, Heat Policy Lead, said: “We are pleased to see the publication of BEIS’ proposals to introduce heat network zones in England. This follows the ADE’s recommendations last year to introduce a zoning framework as a way to mobilise industry and ensure we deliver the most cost effective solutions for heat decarbonisation right across the country. A local, zoned approach to addressing the challenge of decarbonising heat and improving energy efficiency will deliver not only a massive reduction in emissions, but also an increase in comfort - as well as significant growth in jobs and skills across regions. BEIS has laid forth exciting plans. It is now crucial to ensure that the proposed framework supports the development of large scale, low carbon heat networks, gives local actors confidence to get moving and considers the role for consumer engagement to ensure we deliver a just approach to heat decarbonisation. We look forward to working with the Department and with our members to help make the net zero energy system of the future a reality.”

ACE REACTS TO UK CONSTRUCTION M P I: T“ HE FIGURES HAVE NOT SUBSTANTIVELY IMPROVED” Matthew Farrow, director of policy at the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), which represents the companies large and small that design, deliver and manage our national infrastructure and built environment, has given the following statement: “Autumn is here and the figures have not substantively improved. As in many other sectors we are facing the spectre of rising people costs as well as delays and inflationary pressures on materials. This is a potent combination which will hold back post-pandemic recovery in both the construction sector and the wider economy. “Despite these challenges, the fact that respondents remain largely upbeat with a positive business outlook is good news. It remains to be seen whether this withstands the next few months of 2021 which are unlikely to see any substantial change in the circumstances we are working in.” ***************************** What does Construction PMI mean for the UK? It provides operational information covering the entire construction sector. It is interpreted as a leading indicator of construction sector activity and inflation. Construction PMI growth is an indication of favorable market conditions and can be seen as positive for the pound sterling growth. UK Markit/CIPS Construction PMI is published by Markit together with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply.
Prof G. Hughes - School of Economics University of Edinburgh “Ten Point Plan and Market Intervention” The presentation will examine the economic issues involved in developing hydrogen production, transmission and distribution systems to meet distributed heating demand using actual data and the lessons that can be learned from other networks. On the supply side it will contrast steam reforming (blue hydrogen) with electrolysis (green hydrogen) relying on different sources of electricity including nuclear power, intermittent renewables and novel forms of gas generation. A point worth emphasising is that the costs of CO2 transport and storage are a critical, but often neglected, element in understanding the economics of hydrogen production systems. Dr Tom Houghton - Principal Consultant E4tech “What are the possible market implications of sector coupling through power-to-gas?” Tom Houghton leads the System Transition Enablers sector at E4tech, bringing expertise from finance, industry and academia to bear on energy systems problems. He has led studies into the role that hydrogen and fuel cells can play in future decarbonisation pathways, and projects relating to the power and energy sectors, from tariff reform to power grid innovation. Specialised in hydrogen economics, Tom has worked in academia internationally, the power sector with Alstom and in banking. This is a series of webinars replacing our usual single day September Seminar. Each will run from 10:00 to 12:00, allowing time for any questions you may wish to ask. The IPowerE is a leading independent international forum for networking and promotion of knowledge in the field of power and energy and we have lined up an impressive set of presenters on the very topical subject of the UK’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. In February 2021 DIN Forsyning commissioned MAN Energy Solutions to supply a turnkey modules for heat-generation featuring two MAN ETES heat-pump systems. With an overall heating capacity of 50 MW, the coming districtheating plant will supply around 100,000 local inhabitants with approximately 235,000 MWh of heat annually. The location at the Port of Esbjerg will enable the use of renewable power from nearby wind farms and seawater as a heat source for the generation of heating energy. The new district-heating plant will thus guarantee an emission-free alternative to the city’s current, coal-fired power plant, which at present provides approximately half of Esbjerg’s district heating and is scheduled for closure by April 2023. The ETES heat pump system is one of the three available configurations of the electrothermal energy-storage system, called MAN ETES, which was developed by MAN Energy Solutions Switzerland in cooperation with ABB Switzerland. At the highest level, the technology offers heat production, storage, and reconversion into electricity. It is, in effect, a complete energy-management system that also allows the sector integration of energy. ETES technology enables the exploitation of excess power from renewable energy sources. The operational flexibility of the solution makes it possible to generate electrical balancing-power in the short term for the electrical grid. The basic principle is the conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy, which is stored in the form of hot water and ice in insulated reservoirs. The electrothermal process not only allows the distribution of the generated heat and cold to users according to demand and margins, but also offers the option of converting it back into electricity as an additional usage variant. www.man-es.com
