1,525 KVA UNIT FOR MBA2 DATA CENTRE WHICH WILL REVOLUTIONISE CONNECTIVITY IN AFRICA

A

new genset has been supplied by Zwart Techniek to a data centre in Nyali, Mombasa, Kenya. This IS A 1,525 kVA continuous duty genset designed for MBA2 - it produces power at 11,000 volts and has 2,712 horsepower under the hood, a 65.3-litre V16 Engine with 4 turbochargers, 8-cylinders to each bank and weighs about 15 tons. The genset has been built for a new data centre the iColo third data centre in Nyali, Mombasa. Called MBA2 this offers 1,200 square metres of IT space and is expected to be completed in Q1 of 2022 and is set to provide an estimated capacity of 1.6MW megawatts. iColo, a market leader in carrier-neutral data center infrastructure in Kenya , chose Mombasa for the centre as is the entry point for new subsea cable systems landing in East and Central Africa. Sscheduled for completion in early 2022 it is set to provide an estimated capacity of 1.6MW and 1,200 square meters of IT space. The expansion plans in East Africa are on track with this new facility which will host over 600 customer racks. The location of MBA2 is in close proximity to subsea cables landing points in Mombasa enabling customers to deploy and connect their infrastructure at the new site. According to the company, this new facility will grow its African footprint and help connect approximately a billion people to the internet expanding its services to tap into Africa’s expanding internet economy. “As a leading data center infrastructure provider, iColo plays a major role supporting digital transformation strategies by enabling businesses to be connected and supported in real-time,” iColo Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ranjith Cherickel told WIP. “This new facility will be the gateway to 200 million people living in the region bringing the content closer to the end user thereby reducing latency and improving internet experience for all. The size of the facility is also scaled to reflect the huge growth in connectivity that is unfolding in East Africa. We hope this new Data Center will be home to all new cables landing in the region,” added Mr. Cherickel. MBA2 is a greenfield build which has been designed to deliver 99.999% uptime for power and cooling. The facility will be PCIDSS and ISO 27001-certified assuring clients of the highest levels of security. This expansion demonstrates iColo’s commitment to ensure that Mombasa remains the premier connectivity hub in Africa. Whether dealing with Europe’s biggest data centres, the power supply to an African airport or a hospital in the Netherlands, Zwart Techniek is likely to be the company behind providing emergency power, off-grid

energy and hybrid solutions. The company designs, engineers, builds, installs, commissions and services complete emergency power systems for the most challenging situations. A spokesman for Zwart Techniek comments: “Our service organisation consists of 35 specialists who are there to provide our customers with scheduled maintenance support, and are on standby 24/7 to swing into action whenever required. Our extensive coverage usually means we can be onsite within two hours in the event of an emergency. “The installation and commissioning of the emergency power system is the final, but crucial, step. To ensure minimal disruption to the day-to-day

operation systems are tested at the quietest times, even if that means doing it at night or at the weekend. We don’t leave until it’s working and the customer is satisfied.” All Zwart Techniek installations, starting at 20kW, have a testing- and inspection obligation every two and 4 years. This inspection is based on the SCIOS scope 4 (for combustion engines) and scope 7c (for oil supply pipe lines). Zwart engineers are SCIOS-certified and can therefore take care of these inspections for every client. Zwart is annually audited by SCIOS.
