LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN HELP THE ENVIRONMENT It is up to the individuals to change their mindset and actions towards protecting the environment if we expect to see a real change. More on page 6

Looking back in this quarter, I am pleased with all the aspects of our business. We continued to focus on the development of our local Bruneian staff. The health and safety of our employees, the local community and the environment is Megamas number one priority. We have stringent Health and Safety policies to ensure that this remains so. The workforce is proud of the site’s safety performance and the recognition given by the British Safety Council (BSC) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) over the years. Megamas has also gained a Centre accreditation from CITB in the UK. Since the 1990s Behavioural Safety, our Partnership approach and commitment to workforce involvement has been the foundation on which our excellent safety culture has been built upon. It has given us the confidence to introduce new ideas and empowers all employees to be involved in promoting and actioning safe behaviours both at work and at home. As an organisation we have a history of continuous improvement and this applies to all aspects of our safety and business. Year on year improvements have been made to existing processes and new initiatives introduced. None of these achievements could have been possible without the excellent contribution made by our staff, and therefore, I would like to thank each and every member of the Megamas family for their outstanding efforts, hard-work and loyalty. I would also like to wish everyone a happy and blessed Eid celebration. Hajah Khadijah Mohamed Megamas Managing Director

CITB APPROVED SCAFFOLDING TRAINING AT MEGAMAS (From page 1) The CITB personnel at Megamas were very impressed with the capabilities, knowledge and competence displayed by the Bruneian Scaffolding instructors, the centre’s atmosphere, and the training facilities. It was remarked that the level of competence of the instructors of Megamas often exceeded their expectations and a healthy rapport between both parties was present during the entire process due to the committed, professional and friendly atmosphere. Megamas Operations Manager Michael Stringer said “we are delighted to have received confirmation of this award, these qualifications ensure a best practice level of knowledge and an internationally recognized career and competency path for scaffolders of all ages and abilities right here in Brunei” The CITB Centre accreditation joins Megamas’ other accreditations by NEBOSH, LEEA, St John’s Ambulance, OPITO, CIEH, IOSH and RoSPA.

CITB (UK) is the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry in the UK. The CITB training standards in Scaffolding are the benchmark requirement for the Brunei Energy Industry Competency Framework (EICF) and are the requisite training level for Brunei Shell Petroleum staff and contractors. Participants who successfully complete the course receive a CITB certificate as demonstration of the skills they have acquired. Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd is an accredited training centre for CITB(UK) in Brunei and offers the courses in erection and dismantling of scaffolds (Part A and Part B) as well as inspection (SIS and SISC).

The award was presented by Michael Parker CBE, RoSPA Vice Chairman, during the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards ceremony held on the 14th of May, 2014 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel. The RoSPA awards are for the ultimate recognition of dedication to excellence in Occupational Health and Safety Management and an on-going commitment to workplace safety. Megamas commenced the EICF programme for local Bruneians to be trained as scaffolders and riggers. There will be 22 scaffolders and 32 riggers. The Energy Industry Competency Framework (EICF), established in July 2013, is a joint collaboration between the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO), the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the energy industry with objectives of defining the competencies required to perform jobs and roles in the workplace in the energy industry, creating alignment between training providers and industry requirements, as well as increasing employability by up-scaling the skills obtained by locals to increase the number of Bruneians to work in the energy industry. The programme at Megamas consists of classroom/practical and work-placement in industry. On completion of the course, all students will be offered guaranteed jobs in the oil/gas industries. This is an excellent initiative by the Government which Megamas is proud to be part of.

EICF PROGRAMME

ENERGY INDUSTRY COMPETENCY FRAMEWORK COMMUNITY SERVICE Prior to their work-placement, the trainees of the Megamas EICF program had the opportunity to work on a “Project Amal” at Masjid Kampong Pandan, Kuala Belait. The activity was to replace the lighting system in the mosque which required scaffolding structures ranging from 4metres to 8metres in height. This project was first envisaged as practical experience for the trainees in order for them to gain valuable practical work experience as well as exposing them to the actual working environment of their future employment. The voluntary nature of this charity work was planned by Megamas to develop the trainee’s spiritual and moral values in order to enforce their belief and desire to become valuable citizens of the country. The Megamas team hopes that by providing EICF trainees with charitable projects that has both high practical and moral values, it will develop the competency of individual trainees as well as provide reinforcement of teamwork, collaboration and unity in the workplace prior to them being sent on work attachment at local companies.

ENVIRONMENT

LITTLE THINGS THAT CAN HELP THE ENVIRONMENT The term “environment” typically conjures up thoughts of rivers, trees, animals, etc. and we regularly read through the news regarding efforts that the government and NGOs are doing to promote greater understanding and concern for the environment – campaigns, roadshows, cleanup efforts at the beach, recycling drives, bring-your-own-bag initiatives, plant a tree campaign, etc.

However, on a regular basis we observe open burning being carried out, we see empty cans, bottles, plastics being thrown carelessly by the roadsides and into rivers and lakes, grease, oil and household chemicals poured down the drain. There’s only so much that the government and NGOs can do to raise our awareness. It is up to the individuals to change their mindset and actions towards protecting the environment if we expect to see a real change. There are multiple things that we can do at home in order to do our part for the environment.

Use rechargeable batteries

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Use both sides of paper

Bring re-usable bags when going to the grocery store

Purchase reusable bottles and containers

Turning off electrical appliances when they are not in use

These may seem menial but if everyone were to make an effort, it will lead to a great contribution towards reducing the negative impacts on the environment. 06

LONG SERVICE AWARD TO LOCAL BRUNEIAN Megamas recently presented a long service award to Morni Karim following 24 years of service with the Company. Morni joined Megamas on 26th March 1990 as an Assistant Instructor and worked for 4 years gaining experience mainly in the offshore, marine and aviation departments. In February 1995, he became a Deputy Instructor, assisting the course instructor for the delivery of the Master File in a safe and efficient manner. In March 2000, Morni became an OPITO approved instructor for the Tropical BOSIET course including Travel Safely by Boat and Tropical FOET including Travel Safely by Boat. In January 2002, Morni was promoted to Senior Instructor and his job activities were expanded to maintaining the budgets for offshore, marine and aviation and preparing Monthly Reports and maintenance activities when required. David Doig, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of OPITO, highlighted many years ago to Megamas that Morni was as equal of any instructor for OPITO training anywhere in the world. In December 2007, Morni became Megamas’ OPITO Training Manager, a position he holds until today. Although he now spends much time in management-type activities, he still conducts training on a regular basis, .e.g. he was instrumental to Megamas becoming an OPITO approved centre for Helicopter Landing Officers. He has represented Megamas at conferences, exhibitions in Brunei and the Region, and at OPITO TPAG Meetings. According to Hajah Khadijah Mohamed, Managing Director, Morni is an excellent example of a hard-working, co-operative, and loyal employee always willing to do his best for the company. In addition, Hajah Khadijah has commented that Morni is typical of many local Bruneians who given the opportunity and right working environment, can perform to the highest levels, and, at the same time, achieve their potential and move into a management position. According to David Doig, Group Chief Executive of OPITO, Morni is a credit to himself and his family and without doubt one of the best instructors he has ever seen.

LOCAL MEGAMAS EMPLOYEE GAINS NEBOSH OIL AND GAS Mohammad Rufian Haji Abdul Rahman recently received a notification from NEBOSH to congratulate him on achieving the NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas certificate, which is a 5-day course held in Megamas for a number of participants keen to learn more about the important health and safety issues relating to the production, storage and processing of hydrocarbons in the oil and gas industry. According to Mohd Roger Ainsworth, Megamas General Manager, “We constantly try to offer our local staff opportunities for their career development and job satisfaction, and currently, we have a training matrix which caters for all our instructor staff to ensure their competency and career development. “As a result of such a policy over many years, Megamas has encountered strong staff loyalty, whereby over 40 per cent of the staff have remained with the company for 10 years or much longer.”
