We shall endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit until we all come into the unity of the faith, at the same time admonishing all brethren that they shall not contend for their different views to the disunity of the body.

BRO. J. E. PUTNAM

WI District Superintendent

I TIMOTHY 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith,Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. The month of October has traditionally been noted as “Pastor Appreciation” month, whereby the ministry of any given assembly should take a special time and recognize their spiritual leaders. Certainly, any minister that has God’s business first and foremost on their heart and life should be “honored” and given special recognition for a job well done for another year. I have a friend, who, in his early days of ministry, started a Home Missions church. He and his family scraped and saved, went without, and struggled to get the work going. Many hours of personal witness, prayer, and sacrificial giving went into their effort to do what they felt God had called them to do. Any Home Missions pastor will tell you that this is normally the way it is in starting a new work for the Lord. After a couple of years of minimal growth, my friend called me and was somewhat down, that here it was “Pastor Appreciation” month, and not one word of appreciation was said to him or anyone in his family. He felt like nobody really

cared! The end of the story came when my friend hung up the phone on me, when I asked him if “recognition” was the reason why he started that work. I was not trying to be heartless, nor unsympathetic, but to state the obvious fact that, in doing the will of God, we just do it, regardless of what others do or don’t do. The truth of the matter is that these new converts were not doing the right thing. They were not doing what the Word of God stated. They should without question, have had the decency at least to say…”THANK YOU” to the man that was standing in the spiritual gap for them. In the New Testament, you will read in Paul’s letter to the church of Colosse… Colossians 1:3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, 5 For the hope, which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: 7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faith-

Bro. Don Rogers, Prayer Ministries ful minister of Christ; 8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. Paul is commending the saints of this assembly, and he is expressly telling them that he is always praying for them. He commends them for their love for one another, and the hope that they have for heaven. Paul’s report, according to verse 4, is only by what he has “heard” about them. The scripture does not tell us if Paul initially preached in this city or not. History tells us that Colosse was located 120 miles east of Ephesus in the Lycus River Valley in ancient Phrygia, part of the Roman territory of Asia Minor. We know that Paul preached in Ephesus and that area, but there is no mention of him actually going to Colosse. So, who is the apostle Paul hearing these good reports from? Verse 7 says… “As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.” I don’t believe that “Epaphras” is a Biblical name that you and I repeat very often, if at all. Yet, it is quite obvious that this man was “a faithful minister of Christ.” More than likely, Epaphras was the beloved pastor of the church in Colosse. My point in mentioning this is that the great apostle Paul will always be credited with writing this epistle to the church in Colosse, but how much honor have we ever thought about giving Epaphras, the one who served these saints well? Most ministers are somewhat embarrassed for people to give them special recognition, for that is not why they do what

WDN: Tell us about yourself and your family. BRO. ROGERS: I was influenced early in my formative years with the passion and urgency for prayer in the Louisiana District back in 1981 under T.F. Tenny and G.A. Mangun. I received the Holy Ghost in New Orleans under Pastors Danny Brown and John Cupit, who were two evangelistic, passionate preachers in soul winning. Both Sis. Rogers and I taught in New Orleans Christian Academy, where we met and married in August of 1982. We have five children and four grandchildren. During our time in New Orleans, I worked in sales and marketing, owned my own home improvement company, and worked for WSMB and WTIX Radio, where I was a play-by-play sports broadcaster, along with hosting a sports talk show. Sis. Rogers and I moved to Wisconsin in 1990, attending Parkway Apostolic Church for five years before starting the Pentecostals of Wisconsin in June of

1995. I was asked by Billy Cole to travel with his crusade team for six years to Ethiopia. Gaining experience and a love for evangelism, I began ministering in many countries the Apostolic message, through an inner healing and prophetic ministry. Sis. Rogers and I developed a multicultural church, with emphasis on Christian Education. Sis. Rogers went on to receive her masters in leadership. She founded Victory Christian Academy in 1999 (it is an accredited school through Marquette University), where degreed and certified teachers, who are Apostolic, work daily in the trenches to foster academic excellence in K4 through 8th grades. She started a sexual abstinence ministry ten years ago, producing an 83% success rate with its participants. Sis. Rogers and I enjoy Cajun cooking and New Orleans cuisine. Sis. Rogers enjoys art and has drawn several baptisteries, both in America and overseas. She enjoys pouring Christian values into Continued on page 11

Wisconsin has gone global! Not only through giving to missions, but through the ministry of people from right here in our state. Bro. M.W. Rogers is the Global Missions (previously called Foreign Missions) Director of Wisconsin. He has held this position for many years and continues to have a heart for our foreign missionaries. Following are missionaries that are based out of our state or have a connection to Wisconsin.

Larry and Elizabeth Decker

Missionary, Central America/Caribbean, Panama Larry and Elizabeth Decker have been active in the church for many years, including involvement in Spanish ministry in their home church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They have taught many home Bible studies in both Spanish and English. They served in Costa Rica as AIMers for two years under the missionaries, David and Yonda Schwarz. Since the AIM assignment, they have been pastoring a church in Bowie, Texas.

years, Ray Nicholls received his ministerial license and a missionary appointment to Belarus. After a term of service, they returned to Wisconsin and pastored Faith Apostolic Church in Park Falls. However, their burden for global missions remained. In answering their call, Ray and Judi Nicholls were appointed as UPCI missionaries to Poland in September 2000. They arrived on the field in June 2002 and are working with groups in six cities in Poland.

Alan and Valerie Demos

Missionary, Europe/Middle East, Germany

Alan and Valerie Demos began their missionary career as members of the Germanybased European Impact Team in 1973. They received their appointment to Greece in 1974 and pioneered a thrivMissionary, Europe/Middle East, Poland ing UPC work there from 1975 to 1989. Henry and Sharon Ritchie Missionary, Central America/Caribbean, French Guiana, Windward Islands

Henry and Sharon Ritchie became involved in Foreign Missions in 1975, as dean of the Bible school in London, England. Shortly after returning to the United States, they realized that their place in the Kingdom of God would be on the mission field. In 1977, they were appointed missionaries to the Windward Islands of the Caribbean, a field that had never had an apostolic missionary. Arriving in the Windwards in 1978, they began language study in order to minister in the French-speaking islands. At the same time, they began pioneer works on the English-speaking islands; and by the end of their first term, every major island had at least one United Pentecostal Church. French Guiana was later added onto their responsibilities. It, too, was a field with no prior witness. Their major efforts have been pioneer evangelism—starting churches where there were none—and teaching in the Bible schools.

Monte and Dianne Showalter Regional Evangelist, International

Monte and Dianne Showalter, former instructors in the Bible school in Haiti under the Associates In Missions program, received their appointment to El Salvador in October 1986. They were involved in church planting, extension Bible schools, and tent crusades. In January 1992, Showalter was appointed as field superintendent of Guatemala and saw the work double during their five and one-half years

there. Since May 1997, the Showalters have served as missionary evangelists. They train nationals through evangelism and children’s ministry seminars, help missionaries coordinate crusades, develop Bible schools, and serve as the international coordinator for Global Campus Ministries, reaching out to university students around the world.

Bennie and Theresa DeMerchant Missionary, Brazil, South America

A New Brunswicker, Bennie DeMerchant, and his wife, Theresa (Shomberg) from Wisconsin, were appointed in 1964 to the Brazilian Amazon, where they still serve in Manaus. DeMerchant’s major evangelism tools are Cessna seaplanes he has flown for 15,000 hours. He also uses hundreds of workers and a fleet of boats and canoes in the world’s largest forest to plant churches in the Amazon, an area equal to half of the USA. Fuel costs are about double those of the homeland. Theresa DeMerchant uses 250 faithful teachers and supervisors, in 93 other Bible schools outside of Manaus, with over 2,000 students. Since the beginning of training in 1972, the Ladies’ Ministries of UPCI has faithfully subsidized some expenses. Of 6,000 alumni, most of them are ministers or involved in some ministry in local churches. The new ABI buildings, extended recently in Manaus, accommodate 500 students. A “Jerusalem” conference center was erected on the Amazon River for large meetings, and extended to hold 9,000. Six other districts are building their own “Jerusalem” conference centers that tax all resources, but have great spiritual dividends. Since the year 2000, the Brazilian UPC has sent eleven adult missionaries to three other Portuguese countries. This year, a big accomplishment was registering the UPC in a new Continued on page 10

wrote the script for the puppet show, planned the activities and food, organized workers, and prayed and fasted for this event! The results were phenomenal!! Both children and adults were touched by the Word of God, and He promises His Word will not return void! September 8th:

Calvary Apostolic Church in La Crosse held an outreach in September, specifically fo-

cused on reaching the children in the local church neighborhood. The theme for this year’s “Church on the Grounds” was “Jesus, You’re My Superhero.” The Sunday School team presented a puppet show, delivering the message that Jesus is the Superhero who can save us all! Twenty-one new children were guests at the event. Everyone enjoyed a great time of worship, ministry of the Word, food, activities, prizes, and wholesome Christian fun.

BY ELLEN HAUPT I wanted you to know of another miracle of healing – mine! I have had lower back problems since I was 19 (I just turned 66 – so it has been a long time). At times, I have been so crippled by the muscle spasms, I couldn’t move. Many days I went to work, bent at a 45-degree angle and with one hip several inches higher than the other. Massive doses of ibuprofen were what got me through the day, although I was still in LOTS of pain. At times, my back was so tight, I couldn’t sit – couldn’t bend my back. The chiropractor’s X-rays revealed two problems: an extra half a vertebra fused to my tailbone and a twist in my spine a few inches higher. Adjustments helped for a while, and I learned what to do and what not to do to keep the spasms from being terrible. At Family Camp, I came forward at Bro. Sciscoe’s direction for people who had back problems. I felt a powerful move of God in my body and felt I was healed. In the days following, I confirmed my healing. My back was pain free! I had not been able to lie flat on my back for decades, only with my knees propped up, and then the pain was still enough that I didn’t do that for very long. Since my healing, I get into bed at night and lay flat out on my back! It feels so good! And every time, I breathe my thanks to God for my healing. I have been pain free since camp. God has truly healed my back, and I praise Him! (Now my husband’s back has been hurting him, so I do some of the things he can’t now – with my new back! LOVE working in the garden, pain free!) Sis. Aural atresia refers to the absence of an external ear canal. When someone has aural atresia, there is a high incidence of malformation of the external ear and middle ear also, but the inner ear and auditory nerve are frequently normal. It is important not to forget the “normal” ear in patients who have one-sided atresia as approximately 25% of these individuals may have a hearing loss in their best side also. Atretic Web definition 1. (atresia) an abnormal condition in which a normal opening or tube in the body (as the urethra) is closed or absent.

BY BENJAMIN & VICTORIA SMITH God is moving in the nation of Antigua and Barbuda! During the month of August, eleven people came down from Wisconsin for a week-long missions’ trip. They were a wonderful blessing to the church! We had special services almost every night, and during these special services many were baptized in Jesus’ name and received the Holy Ghost. They also helped us on outreach: Antigua style! We have continued to do outreach every week and it is always amazing, because you never know what God is going to do! A few weeks ago, one of our young men and I were on outreach, and we met a twelve-year old boy. A lot of people would have said, “He is just a boy, he won’t understand.” The Bible says, “Suffer the little children to come unto me,” so we obeyed the voice of the Lord, and right on his front porch he received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave him utterance. A few minutes after that, we joined another one of our groups on another front porch, and the power of God fell again, and this time a lady received the Holy Ghost! God truly is so awesome! The following week, our pastor’s wife met a young man on the street. He happens to be a leader in one of the local churches here on the island. As he heard about God’s plan of salvation, he realized that he had never experienced that before, so he came that Sunday night. After service was finished, he was troubled because he still had not received the gift of the Holy Ghost, so

we started to pray. At around 9:45 pm, he started to speak with other tongues! He felt so good! He decided right then he needed to be baptized in Jesus’ name! At about 10:15 pm, he was baptized in Jesus’ name! Praise the Lord! Also, since our last newsletter update, our Friday night youth has been very exciting. The week following our youth camp, we had a Friday night youth service. After preaching, the Lord led me to a young man that had come that night for the first time. After talking for a few minutes, we prayed, and he began to speak in tongues as he received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then a few minutes later, we baptized him in Jesus’

name! Three weeks ago we had a new lady coming to youth and, after only two or three times in youth, she received the gift of the Holy Ghost! Then on our Mission Sunday, the first Sunday of every month, we had a young man who had been coming for a little while – mainly to youth services. He was baptized in Jesus’ name! The young lady that had just received the Holy Ghost, also saw her need, and was also baptized in Jesus’ name, as well! Then on our Youth Sunday, the second Sunday of every month, I was preaching on holiness. We had a couple visit our church for the very first time from our sister island of Barbuda. Af-

ter the sermon, the husband received the gift of the Holy Ghost and was baptized in Jesus’ name! (The amazing thing about this couple that I found out later, was that I had already met the lady in January of this year, when I was over in Barbuda preaching at a Trinity Pentecost Church in that island, but I had not yet met her husband! God truly does have an amazing way of working everything out for His Glory!) On our Saturday outreach, September 21, one of our young men and I met a lady on her front porch. We taught her a Bible study. After seeing that she had not followed the Biblical plan of salvation, she came back to the church and was baptized in Jesus’ name! The next week another group was on outreach and they met a lady two houses away from the lady mentioned above. As they talked to her, she thought that the Holy Ghost was not for today, but after they prayed she began to speak in other tongues as the Holy Ghost gave her the utterance! God truly is amazing! We will be leaving for the United States on October 8. We will stay overnight in St. Louis, then we will be arriving In Madison, WI early on the 9th. We plan to return to Antigua on October 31. God has been doing so many amazing things that I just don’t have the space to write them here. All of this is only possible through your prayers and support, so please do continue to keep us in prayer, as we pray for you all, and if you would like to become a monthly partner with us, don’t hesitate to email us at bensmithjohn3.5@gmail.com. Without you, this would not be possible. October 2013

Going Global, Continued from page 5 Portuguese country, Angola. GM matching funds have made a great difference in these growing fields. At the same time, Brazilian national mission program labors to reach all states and major cities in their own huge country of 200 million souls, almost two thirds of the population of the USA. Since 1989, DeMerchant superintends the UPC of Brazil, with 32 districts, 1,200 congregations, and 90,000 constituents, including works among ten Indian tribes. Too many of these areas can only be reached by seaplane, or slow moving boats on crooked rivers. Some of these river routes involve passing over heavy sets of dangerous rapids among the boulders, unloading, portaging supplies for safety around rapids by trails, or all hands out to pull on ropes ahead of dug-out canoes, or standing on rocks and pushing behind. As one rises to headwaters of these rivers, logistics become more difficult. Motivation to keep going comes when they draw close to the equator as they think about the easily reached souls who live there. For the DeMerchants, it is difficult to leave the field for furlough to raise badly needed PIM support for growing deficits. Something unexpected took a big bite out of their finances. Your prayers and long time support have made the difference for over four decades, where they work at the same location since the beginning! Gerald and Darla McLean Missionary, Africa, Nigeria

The McLeans served as AIM workers in Nigeria in 1997 and received full missionary appointment to Nigeria in 1998. They have been involved in Bible school training since their arrival in Nigeria, and Gerry McLean serves as the national superintendent of the work. Darla McLean serves as the president of the newly formed ladies’ ministries in Nigeria. Since the McLeans began their missionary service in Nigeria, there have been over 130 newly licensed ministers and approximately 100 new churches added to the fellowship. Gerry has taught oneness seminars throughout the country, and to date, over 2,000 Trinitarian ministers and church leaders have been baptized in Jesus’ name. The McLeans will continue to work in the Bible school, assist in planting churches, and teach oneness seminars when they return to the field.

Praise God that we are not confined to our own state, but have the ability to fulfill the great commission to “go into all the world and preach the gospel.” Let God move you to reach the people in your neighborhood, your community, your state, and your world. You can “go” in your prayers and support, or go in person. Let God be your guide.

But it is very needful for the saints of the living God to take the time and make the effort to “give honor to whom honor is due.” I trust that this October, every assembly across this great Wisconsin District will take the time during one of the many services during this month and honor your leaders. young people. Bro. Rogers heads up the Wisconsin District Prayer Ministry. His passion and vision is to see 24 hours of prayer and worship going forth throughout Wisconsin.

WDN: How long have you been director of Wisconsin Prayer Ministries? BRO. ROGERS: I have been the Prayer Coordinator of the Wisconsin District Prayer Ministries for the last three years. WDN: What do you like most about being director? BRO. ROGERS: I Iike the challenge of strategizing with pastors and saints in our district, the various ways to increase the spirit of prayer in our churches. I like working with our District Board and Revival Commission. They are men of great sacrifice and dedication to the Apostolic Doctrine. I like the diversity of people I meet, who demonstrate real passion for Apostolic revival in our district. WDN: What does Wisconsin Prayer Ministries offer the Wisconsin District? BRO. ROGERS: Wisconsin Prayer Ministries offers for local pastors, their leadership and members, the prayer tools and resources for strengthening a prayer ministry. WDN: Who are the sectional representatives and what is their role in the department? BRO. ROGERS: We are in the process of developing coordinators for each section to expand our District Board’s vision for our churches. Each section then will promote district prayer initiatives throughout their local churches. This may include hosting prayer conferences and sectional prayer meetings. WDN: What is your vision for the Wisconsin Prayer Ministries? BRO. ROGERS: My vision is to see 24-hour prayer around the clock, start-

ing in my home church, The Pentecostals of Wisconsin. I would like to see the planting of more churches through our Plowing for Planting prayer vision. I would like to see pastors work and strategize with their prayer coordinators in a closer way for facilitating revival. WDN: What can the local church do to help facilitate this vision? BRO. ROGERS: I encourage each pastor to work with their local appointed prayer coordinator, their sectional prayer coordinator and this ministry, to carry their vision, and the vision of the district, for revival. By each pastor sharing their burden and vision for revival, it helps his prayer team hold up his hands for the battle. It also promotes real unity for the local church vision and the Wisconsin District vision. WDN: Everyone has at least one “goto” verse to encourage them. What is your “go-to” verse? BRO. ROGERS: “Help me to know joy and gladness through the bones that thou O Lord has broken.” Psalms 51:8 Interview conducted by April Peckham, WDN Representative Section 4
