Wolverhampton City Archives

Welcome

August – December 2017

There’s a distinctive Chinese influence in the gallery this autumn and we hope it gives you a flavour of the incredible culture and history of this vast and varied country and its people. From the Eight Immortals of the ancient Taoist religion to a contemporary cinematic look at ever-changing modern-day China our autumn/winter exhibitions encourage you to immerse yourself in a culture which has, and continues to have, huge influence in the Western world. Much closer to home we champion some of Wolverhampton’s best artists with a welcome return to the city by internationally-renowned sculptor Michael Lyons; our annual Wolverhampton Society of Artists show, and an exhibition by more than 50 University of Wolverhampton masters degree students. And as always we have a busy programme of great events to suit all ages and interests not only at the Gallery but also at Bantock House and Bilston Museum. There’s lots going on – come and enjoy it.

New Exhibitions

The Immortals – Highlights of the Chinese Collection Art Gallery 31 August – 3 December Free Revered by the Taoist religion and seen as signs of prosperity and longevity the Eight Immortals are one of the most represented subjects in Chinese decorative arts. In this new exhibition we bring together a fascinating range of objects from the Gallery’s own collection to explore the lives, myths and stories of The Eight Immortals, Pa Hsien. Images of the immortals can be found on many types of decorative objects from delicate embroidery and hand-crafted ceramics, through to the most intricate hand-carved ivory. And the influence of Chinese design and production techniques will also feature in beautiful objects, made in our own region and held in our collection, as part of this fascinating exhibition.

Bilston has always been a special place and this new exhibition and display celebrates the pioneering industries and spirit of the town.

Homegrown talent has always been championed by the Gallery and no more so than in our annual Wolverhampton Society of Artists exhibition. Over the years the exhibition has always featured a diverse range of styles, media and subject matter. 8

Much of the work is for sale and on Saturdays during

the exhibition there will be a programme of activities and demonstrations including an open studio weekend, artists’ talks and drawing sessions. The Wolverhampton Society of Artists continues to evolve and is a respected and strongly supported part of the city’s artistic scene. You can find out more at www.wsa-artists.com.

Immerse yourself in Yang Fudong’s film. Yang is one of the leading figures in China’s contemporary art world and independent cinema. Much of Yang’s work explores the ideals and anxieties of a generation of Chinese people born during and since the country’s cultural revolution – it is a generation that is struggling to find its place in a rapidly changing and evolving society.

New Exhibitions

Michael Lyons: Full Circle Art Gallery 4 November – 28 January 2018 Free With his first major exhibition in the Midlands the work of internationally renowned artist Michael Lyons has come ‘full circle’ – back home to Wolverhampton. Full Circle traces the roots of Michael Lyons’ sculpture to the natural and industrial landscape of the West Midlands. While studying at Wolverhampton College of Art in the 1960s, Lyons was interested in an eclectic range of subjects: the figure, mechanical objects, the stars, landscape, history and mythology. These are themes he has continued to explore, during a 50-year career in which he has made sculpture in China, Canada and Mexico. Sculpture, drawings, and a new film featuring Michael Lyons discussing his work in his studio are all part of this winter show.

Friends

Friends Everyone needs a friend and we are very fortunate to have active friends groups across all our sites. Members are from all ages and backgrounds with the same aim - supporting and promoting the interested

property. All our sites benefit from the fundraising and by joining the group it benefits you to as you can meet new friends, see fantastic exhibitions, enjoy event outings.

Patrons We’ve also launched a Patrons’ Scheme giving members access to unique events, one-off functions and exclusive behind-the scenes tours. Become a Patron of Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Museums and get closer to what you love. Did you

know that you can sponsor an event or an exhibition for as little as £100? We are always keen to work with new sponsors and supporters.

To discuss sponsorship opportunities or to learn more about our friends organisations please contact Marguerite Nugent on 01902 551998 or email marguerite.nugent@wolverhampton.gov.uk.
