BP Portrait Award 2018 Wolverhampton Art Gallery 13 October – 30 November

The BP Portrait Award is one of the most important and prestigious platforms for portrait painters. Winners of the award have gone on to paint well-known public figures including Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and sports stars such as Bobby Moore and Sir Steven Redgrave. The exhibition is an annual celebration of contemporary painted portraiture by artists of all ages from across the world; this year the competition received 2667 entries from 88 countries.

The panel of judges marked the works without knowing the artists’ name, nationality, gender or age. Each member of the judging panel considered what makes an outstanding portrait, weighing up the likeness, narrative, structure and overall impact of the work. They eventually selected the 48 exceptional portraits that feature in this year’s exhibition. The BP Portrait Award 2018 exhibition was launched at the National Portrait Gallery in June and Wolverhampton will be the first venue outside London to host the show. Join more than 6 million people who have seen the exhibition for FREE since the award was originally created in 1980.

Sites of Memory II Wolverhampton Art Gallery 6 October – 2 December

Lychgate, St. Thomas’s Church, Church St., Wolverhampton. 2017. (detail) ©Chris Harrison

Chris Harrison is a photographer who specialises in producing documentary-style photographs. His work is included in the collections of the V&A, The Imperial War Museum and the National Media Museum. Harrison photographs war memorials as he goes about other activities, never setting out specifically to capture them or intending to undertake a systematic survey of them.

4

His images focus on the memorial and its surroundings rather than the lists of names or their architectural details. This approach results in vibrant and dynamic pictures. Photographs of First World War memorials in Wolverhampton have been commissioned for this exhibition and will be displayed alongside images from Britain and Germany taken in the last 20 years.

Journeys: Making Marks With Meaning Wolverhampton Art Gallery 20 October 2018 – 6 January 2019 Still Lively is a weekly drawing and social club for people aged 55+ that takes place at Wolverhampton Art Gallery and four Shire Living centres across Staffordshire. It is a wide-ranging partnership that helps older people to create, share and celebrate their artworks, stories and ideas. This exhibition consists of drawings made by more than 100 people who responded to the Still Lively challenge to ‘have a go at drawing’. Large scale works feature in the show, alongside unique concertina sketchbooks that help to present the journey and progression that each participant has made. Also on display are exploratory drawings and creative writing made by participants from Shire Living centres in Stafford. The exhibition is a showcase for the idea that anyone can draw and seeks to inspire anybody, regardless of age, to pick up a pencil and make a start.

Jane & Louise Wilson: Undead Sun Wolverhampton Art Gallery 27 October 2018 – 20 January 2019

Undead Sun, Jane & Louise Wilson, 2014 (video still)

Jane & Louise Wilson are best known for their video, film and photographic works that explore unpeopled spaces, especially those with an oppressive or military history. They were shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999 for their exhibition Gamma. Since then their work has become more complex, featuring multiple projections and increasingly elaborate staging methods to draw the viewer in to their carefully constructed worlds.

Undead Sun is a large-scale video installation inspired by archive photographs, artefacts and diary entries. It explores the impact of the First World War and the technological forces that it unleashed. Strategic control of the skies changed how the world appeared from the air; terrifying gas attacks changed how we viewed the air itself.

Undead Sun was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and Imperial War Museums, in partnership with Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Supported by Arts Council England. With special thanks to Artliner.
