MICHAEL BRENNAND-WOOD: SEEDS OF MEMORY ART GALLERY 11 March – 7 May Seeds of Memory looks back over the 40-year career of internationally renowned textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood, exhibiting retrospective pieces such as Archive and The Art of The Stitch alongside nine new specially commissioned works.

Sketch for Light and Paint. © Guy Sherwin, 2017. Wall painting under the influence of coloured light.

GUY SHERWIN: LIGHT AND PAINT 2017 ART GALLERY 7 March – 2 April Experience colours, shapes and movement in this latest work by film-maker and artist Guy Sherwin. Light and Paint is a return to Guy Sherwin’s early practices where acrylic painting is animated by projected light. Guy Sherwin studied painting at Chelsea School of Art in the late 1960s before

44

being drawn to the radical film practice of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative (now LUX) where he taught printing and processing during the mid-’70s. He is a senior lecturer in Fine Art (video) at the University of Wolverhampton and has run classes in artist film production at the San Francisco Art Institute. In this latest work Sherwin further explores his early interest in colour as an example that nothing in this world is fixed. As with music it requires the viewer to spend time with the artwork, listening and watching with curiosity.

The New Worlds series was produced for this touring exhibition and has allowed Michael to explore the seeds of his own creativity. The exhibition provides an insight into the artist’s creative process and is enhanced with a new short film featuring Michael Brennand-Wood in his studio which documents him making some of these new pieces. Seeds of Memory is a touring exhibition from The National Centre for Craft & Design New Worlds - Spells, Michael Brennand-Wood 2015 Hand & machine embroidery, interlacing, fabric, collage, animated tape, text, braids, wire, resin, blocks, acrylic on wood base. The period between the wars is often remembered for economic depression, but Bilston industries, large and small, kept producing the goods. Come and see what they made and how Bilston’s industrial heritage kept going throughout hard times. Featuring products from firms such as Beldray, Sankey and Phoenix Glass. DISCOVER DINOSAURS BILSTON GALLERY 8 April - 13 August Discover what makes a dinosaur! Our new family-friendly exhibition at Bilston Gallery explores the prehistoric world of the dinosaurs. Uncover fossils of these fearsome creatures that dominated the planet over 65 million years ago and lived alongside aweinspiring marine reptiles and pterosaurs. Be inspired by our full-size T rex skull; be dwarfed by our replica Baryonyx dinosaur and get to know Beaky, our resident

66

Pterosaur. Join us as we learn more about the life of dinosaurs, discover the difference between herbivores and carnivores and unearth links between these incredible creatures and modern creatures such as birds and crocodiles. Chill out in our ice age experience with Fluffly, our life-size mammoth. Also on display will be ‘The Map That Changed the World’ the first geological map of England and Wales by William Smith in 1815, with a small exhibition.

BLACK AND GOLD: IMAGINARY WORLDS OF JAPANNED WARE BILSTON GALLERY Until 26 March Welcome to an imaginary world, in black and gold, featured in the gallery’s collection of japanned ware. The natural world and its curious creatures feature as golden landscapes and patterns set on lacquered black backgrounds. Three hundred years ago, Bilston led the way for japanned ware manufacture and this exhibition celebrates this pioneering spirit.

SPECTRUM: COLOUR AND ABSTRACTION ART GALLERY

Until 26 March

Until 26 March

Chila Burman’s work is informed by popular culture, Bollywood, fashion, found objects as well as our ideas and celebration of South Asian femininity. Born and brought up in the back streets of Bootle, Liverpool, her art has always had strong roots in Indian culture. For more than twenty years she has worked across print, collage, mixed media, painting and photography with a specific autobiographical focus.

8

Make the most of this rare chance to see the best of the art gallery’s collection of twentieth-century abstract paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures in an exhibition featuring renowned artists Joan Miro, Patrick Heron, Gillian Ayres, Joe Tilson, Gary Hume and Bridget Riley. Informed

by the colour spectrum, this spectacle of pure pigment and form, will delight the eye and inspire visitors’ own creativity. There is opportunity for visitors to create and display their cut-paper abstract collages in the gallery space. An exhibition to brighten up any dark dull day.

JACKIE HARRISON – QUEEN STREET – FROM CROFT TO GEORGIAN SPLENDOUR? CITY ARCHIVES 8 March, 5.30 - 6.30pm

WHEN QUEEN VICTORIA CAME TO WOLVERHAMPTON ART GALLERY 17 March, 2 - 3pm

The research is part of the community element of the City Council’s successful bid for Heritage Lottery funding to maintain the historic frontages of Queen Street’s buildings.

Following on from last year’s successful 150th anniversary celebrations of Wolverhampton’s iconic statue of Prince Albert – fondly known as the ‘man on the horse’ city archivist Heidi McIntosh investigates the events leading up to Queen Victoria’s visit to Wolverhampton. She unveiled the statue of her late husband in 1986. Find out how the visit had an impact on the people of the then town and what it means for Wolverhampton today.

£2 per person, please book in advance by calling 01902 552055

£2 entry. To book a place please call 01902 552055

This talk uses old maps, deeds, trade directories, and other documents to explore the history of Queen Street. You will discover which businesses flourished or faded away and learn about the lives of those who worked along this important city street.

KATE HARTLAND-WESTWOOD – A PAROCHIAL PRENTISE – WOLVERHAMPTON PARISH APPRENTICES 1830 - 1844 CITY ARCHIVES 12 April, 5.30 - 6.30pm The Poor Relief Act of 1601 (Old Poor Law) allowed the parish officials to bind a pauper child to a master, most of whom arranged to remove the child as a financial burden to the parish. Many were sent miles from home as cheap labour in factories or as unpaid servants. Others were contracted out to local families for a period of seven years and were used by the master as low paid labour.

12 12

An 1801 Act of Parliament required the Paris to keep a register of these apprentices. Wolverhampton’s 1830-44 register is a rare survivor. Kate HartlandWestwood has explored the register to give an insight into the lives of these unfortunate children. £2 per person, please book in advance by calling 01902 552055

TEMPERED NOT QUENCHED – THE BATTLE FOR BILSTON’S STEELWORKS CITY ARCHIVES Until 29 March Bilston’s battle for Lizzie, the last blast furnace to grace the Black Country skyline, is the subject of this fascinating local history exhibition. Find out about the local steel men of Bilston and their fight to keep the furnance, fondly known as Lizzie, open. It was a battle which was lost on 5 October 1980 when Lizzie was torn down taking with it more than 200 years of iron

and steel making in the Black Country. Since February 2015, a group of volunteers have collected material about the final years of Bilston steelworks. Featuring the personal testimonies of key witnesses; previously unseen archive material; historical photos and rare artefacts; the ‘Tempered Not Quenched’ exhibition explores this overlooked period of in Britain’s industrial relations history.
