Wedding Bells Hello, everyone! I think summer is finally here. Today, I was able to spend the day outside, sitting in the sun, soaking it all in.Yippee! Summer! I am a huge sun lover…it makes my heart sing. I feel as if I have been in hibernation these last seven months. This year, it took a whole lot longer to get to summer than in any year I can remember. Last month, I made the announcement in this column that I was going to get married.Yes, married! I have been a widow for over 10 years. My late husband, Jim, and I started Women’s Edition together in 1986. When my husband passed in 2008, never in a million years did I think that I would make a marriage commitment again. After all, we had been married for 33 years. I have known the man that I am going to marry for seven years. He has taught me so much. We have both grown together over the years. From the very beginning, he talked about building a healthy relationship between the two of us. Back then, I thought I knew it all. After all, I had been married for a very, very, very long time. I fought it for a while. Then, I began to ask questions. Then, I let my wall down and decided to learn. What is a healthy relationship? How does it feel? How is it different from what I’d had and what he’d had? (He was married once, for seven years, and has been single for 22 years.) For the first time in my life, I started to look at the relationships of those around me, trying to learn from them. We’ve had long conversations and discussed what we wanted out of this marriage. We’ve agreed that a healthy relationship means being partners, supporting one another (having each other’s backs). It means learning, sharing, and communicating with one another. It means being best friends. It means growth. It also means respecting each other, listening to our partner. Not interrupting, not talking over each other. We went to several relationship counseling sessions so that we could learn new skills for the marriage we are entering into. Harold, our therapist, taught me a lot about me. He also taught my partner a lot about himself. He taught us a variety of skills. He has helped us to become a better couple. The BIG DAY will be August 25, exactly seven years from the day we met. We will be getting married on a beach in Kauai, Hawaii. My brother, Tom, and his wife, Kristi, will stand up for us. I am excited, nervous, and—in some odd way— at peace. I love this man with all my heart. He loves me with all his heart. The remainder of our lives we will spend learning, growing, and loving. Life is good.

Check Yourself Before You Dress Yourself Flattering Your Body Shape By Holly Bell
Bring sunshine into every room with upbeat summer style that reflects your vibrant personality! Every modern woman values both style and comfort when choosing clothing. We love to be comfortable, as our tasks are so varied and constant. We love clothing that is flexible, is easy to care for, and has breathability and stretch—especially important in the summer! Vibrant patterns, along with striking color palettes, make us feel good and are the qualities to look for in every purchase. When choosing clothing, it’s important to embrace your body shape. No, we don’t all look the same—and wouldn’t life be boring if we did? Own what you have! Learn to dress in a manner that works with your body shape, and you will feel comfortable and confident while looking stylish. Most of us fall into one of four common body types: triangle (narrow shoulders, wide hips); inverted triangle (wide shoulders tapering to narrow hips and thin legs); rectangle (shoulders and hips about the same without much waist definition); or hourglass (shoulders and hips similar but both taper to a small waist). There are ways to dress each of these body types in a most flattering manner, equalizing the shoulders and hips and creating a defined waistline. Women with a triangle shape will look great this year in fitted blazer jackets with a little shoulder pad. This will widen the shoulders to balance the hips. Wearing bright colors on top and keeping the lower half in darker tones will accent the smallest part of the body. Luckily, this year’s looks offer many bold color choices. Tops with wide necklines look great on women with the triangle body type. Boatneck tops and off-the-shoulder styles widen the shoulder to create balance. Long tops are great, as long as they don’t

end right at the widest part of the hip. Tunics with a diagonal hemline will bring the eye up and avoid drawing a line around the hips. The perfect dress for women with this shape is an A-line that falls to mid-knee. Choose a feel-good fabric that has body and does not cling. Women with an inverted triangle shape will find a lot to choose from this year, also. Jumpsuits and rompers are all the rage, and they look great on this body shape. Keep everything a relaxed fit. V-necks draw the eye down and break up the width of the shoulders. This body shape is perfect for the wild-patterned pants that are so popular this summer. Pair those fun-to-wear pants with a simple V-necked top for pure flattery. Dresses with a slim skirt and an easy-fit top are flattering on the inverted triangle shape. A slim jean skirt would look amazing with a soft button-up-the-front blouse tied a little lower than the waist. To create balance, you want to always accent the smaller part of the body and de-emphasize the larger part. With the rectangle shape, we want to create the illusion of a defined waist where there really isn’t much definition. Narrow belts in the same tone as the clothing will create a waist, along with seam details such as princess seaming or gathers around the waist. Petite women with a rectangle body shape may want to choose shorter tops that just cover the waist of the skirt or pant. This makes a visual shift from top to bottom right at the waistline but doesn’t reveal anything you might want to keep covered. Women with a rectangle body type can enjoy all the shapes of today’s little summer frocks, as long as there is some gathering or darts or even a pattern that creates the illusion of a defined waistline. For the hourglass figure, just think of the Kardashian family, and you will know what shape I am talking about. People may think that the hourglass figure is the one to strive for, but it has its limitations. With the smaller waistline, one must be careful, as the hips seem to grow in contrast to the waist. Keeping the accent on the upper body and the middle of the body, along with playing down the hip area, works best. An hourglass figure always looks best wearing a belt or tucked-in styles. It’s the perfect body shape for this summer’s full skirt, topped off with a wide belt. Style is all about attitude! The more you accept your body’s natural shape, the more confidently you can choose clothing that flatters your figure. You’ll look better, you’ll feel more comfortable, and you can expect to field a few compliments along the way. Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Thread onto bamboo skewers. Thread a mini marshmallow on the end of each skewer to prevent stabbing. For the dip: Mix an 8-ounce package of softened cream cheese with a 7-ounce jar of marshmallow cream. Add in 1 teaspoon of orange juice and a bit of orange zest, if desired. Chill. Serve with skewers.

condiments like mustards, chopped onions, and sauerkraut. If you’re not going to eat them right away, keep them warm in a slow cooker. Halibut on the Grill Make a lemon-butter basting sauce by combining 2 Tablespoons of melted butter, 2 Tablespoons of honey, 2 Tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, minced garlic, 2 teaspoons of soy sauce, and other herbs of your choice. Brush the halibut filets or steaks with olive oil. Grill the halibut for 3 minutes over medium-high heat, basting often with the lemon-butter sauce. Turn fish over and grill for another 3–5 minutes (again, basting often) until the fish flakes. Broccoli Salad Wash and trim 2 heads of broccoli and cut into bite-sized pieces. In a large bowl, mix together 1 cup of mayonnaise, 1/2 cup of white sugar, and 2 Tablespoons of white vinegar. Add the broccoli to the dressing. Add 8 pieces of crisply cooked and crumbled bacon, 1 diced sweet onion, 3/4 cup of raisins, and 1/4 cup of shelled sunflower seeds. Blend well. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Firecracker Burgers Mix 2 pounds of ground chuck with 1/4 of a sweet onion (diced), 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of Lawry’s seasoned salt, 1 teaspoon (or more) of crushed red pepper, and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire or steak sauce. Mix gently. Form the meat into 6 or 8 round patties. Cover and refrigerate until ready to grill. Salt and pepper the patties and grill over medium-high heat until done. Serve on grilled buns with cheeses, mayo, mustards, ketchups, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, or other condiments, as desired.
Retro 7-Up Salad In a glass dish, dissolve a 6-ounce box of lime gelatin in 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until dissolved. Add 1 can of chilled 7-Up and refrigerate. Blend an 8-ounce package of soft cream cheese with pineapple juice from a large can of crushed pineapple. When the gelatin is almost set, add the cream cheese mixture and mix until smooth. Stir in the can of pineapple, 1 cup of toasted coconut, 1 cup of chopped pecans, and 1 cup of mini marshmallows. Fold in 8 ounces of whipping cream, whipped to stiff peaks. Refrigerate. Moon Bars Mix 1 can of lemon pie filling with a box of angel food cake mix (1-step variety). Spread the mixture into a jelly roll pan (15x10x1 inches) and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Let cool. Mix an 8-ounce package of soft cream cheese with 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1 Tablespoon of milk. Frost. Sprinkle with toasted coconut. Cut into squares. Flag Berry Pan Shortcake Mix 4 cups of sliced strawberries with 1/4 cup of sugar and let them sit on the counter until ready to assemble. Do the same with about 2 cups of blueberries. Stir together 3 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of sugar, 5 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cut in 1 cup of cold butter (cubed) and mix until crumbly. Mix in 2 eggs and 2 cups of whipping cream. The mixture will form a soft dough. Pat the dough into the bottom of an ungreased jelly roll pan (15x10x1 inches). Bake at 400 degrees for 15–20 minutes. Let cool. Whip together 2 cups of whipping cream, 1/3 cup of powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla to medium stiff peaks. Spread the whipping cream over the cake. Create a flag design with the fruits, using strawberries for the red stripes and blueberries for the blue. Chill until ready to serve. WE

Curt Hofer & Associates Bringing Dream Homes to Life By Jackie Byers
Whether you want to update your home for the 21st century, add more living space, or build a new home entirely, Curt Hofer & Associates have got you covered. “Our goal is always to make clients happy,” says company president Steve Huber. “We build the home they dream! We will build it to suit our clients’ lifestyles and needs. Each dream is unique, so each home is unique. For this reason, we never build the same home twice.” “Of course, clients who come to us with dreams also have budgets,” Steve continues. “We strive to honor both the dreams and the budgets. That is the best way to make clients happy. Then, when they decide to renovate, they will think of us. After all, who knows the home better than the team who built it? If clients want to add space for a movie room or update a bathroom or kitchen, we have the know-how, the team, and the best ideas on how to stay true to the home’s original design.” Curt Hofer always knew he wanted to build beautiful homes. He founded the firm almost 30 years ago and carefully established its reputation for integrity and quality construction. Steve joined him 24 years ago. Steve does the initial interview, helping to clarify what the dream home is to become. He knows what questions to ask and how to show clients what possibilities exist for their projects. Craig Linnenbrink is the vice president of construction. He oversees each step of construction, with the budget in mind. He is always responsive to the clients’ wishes, keeping them aware of the progress and scheduling tours of the project at their request. Their dedication and creativity have led to beautiful homes and have made the name Curt Hofer synonymous with excellence in building and renovation. Their carefully thought-out building process is at the heart of their success. After the initial client interview with Steve, the draftsmen produce three-dimensional, flexible images to try out different colors and materials—even sample furniture placement. One draftsman produces the paper blueprints that contain the technical aspects of the building. Project managers for the firm make sure every step of the building process goes according to the clients’ wishes. One of those project managers is Steve’s son, and Steve’s wife is the firm’s accountant. The talented team at Curt Hofer & Associates is really one of family and longtime friends. Steve also has as team members various interior designers who can provide the perfect finishing touches to the home. He matches clients with the best designers for their style, which might be

traditional, country, eclectic, or modern. “If the clients want granite, quartz, or marble, the team members show them many choices. If they want gray stone, we have many shades of gray,” Steve says. “I believe our clients enjoy the process because we have done the leg work to make their choices easier.” As anyone in the real estate or construction business can tell you, location matters. When you’re building a home, location also has a major impact on the design and budget. “Some clients own their lot already, some have an area in mind, some want suggestions,” Steve notes. “We have some desirable lots available in excellent neighborhoods.” The homes that the Hofer team builds are for professionals whose top priorities are their careers and families, not overseeing a construction project. “Our project managers keep the building on schedule and according to plan,” Steve says. “They handle the stress for our clients. We always aim to come in within the client’s budget and by the completion date. Of course, we face many obstacles. Since this is Nebraska, we can have weather delays every season. Our team concept and decades of experience have taught us how to get around such problems.” Steve smiles as he adds, “We also have to compete with the construction workers on HGTV, who always manage to bring their projects to completion in 30 to 60 minutes.” What does Steve hope for the future of homebuilding? “I would love to see more young people learning trades,” he says. “Finish carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing offer great career opportunities. They are satisfying careers for kids who like to work with their hands and create. They are also financially rewarding.” If you’ve been dreaming about your ideal home, get started at curthofer.com. You can reach Steve at the office at 402-758-0440 or on his cell phone at 402-5102780. You can also just drop in at 16820 Frances Street and find out what it will take to make the home of your dreams a reality. WE

A Woman’s Work
How to Fall in Love Without Trying Finding Your Sweetheart
By Sharon Knierim
When I met my husband-to-be, I wasn’t looking for romance or love or even a young man to date. Oh, no, not me. I had laid out perfect plans to be a career woman without any personal attachments. I was young and opinionated (weren’t we all?) and extremely selfcentered. With my full-time employer, my future was set: I would maintain my employment, the remainder of my college credits would be financed by the company, and then I would be on my way to fame and fortune. All my time would be my own, and I would be my very own boss with my very own plans and personal life. Sounds like loads of fun, doesn’t it? The plan seemed sound, and I do love a good plan without any detours or surprises. Well, I guess we all know what happens to the best laid plans. I met my future hubby on Friday, May 16, 1969, at 4:47 p.m. He was picking up one of my roommates, who was his girlfriend at the time. When he offered me a ride, too, I somehow realized that my life was not going to be quite as I had planned. It didn’t take long for my roommate and her boyfriend to fall out of charm with each other. When it happened, there I was, sitting like a big spider, just waiting for my chance. It may sound wicked, but fate

is fate— sometimes, we just have to go along with it. After a short while, my secret love called for a date, and I accepted gladly. All week, the excitement built in me. Friday night came…and he stood me up! This had never happened to me before. The next time he called for a date, I was perhaps more curious than excited, but I accepted again. The date started well, but then he invited his best buddy to join us…for the whole evening. They reminisced about their high school days, their fishing trips, their experience in the Armed Forces, and everything else they could think of. It was one of the most boring nights of my life.

Finally, he offered to drive me home to my parents’ house, where I was spending the weekend. Just about a mile from there, he pulled the car over for a little kissy-kissy. He asked if I was tired, and I replied that I was. He said he was tired, too, and proceeded to fall asleep. There we sat, in the dark, directly in front of the neighborhood gossip’s house. After an hour or two, my sister and her husband drove past and slowed down to get a good look at whoever was in this car. When my future hubby finally awoke, the sun was coming up. It was too late to take me to Mom and Pop’s house, so we drove around two counties for a few hours, stopped for breakfast, drove around some more, and then went back to my parents’ house at an acceptable time in late morning. I never wanted to see that boy again. The next weekend, though, we had a more normal date. Round two included my future husband’s old girlfriend (where did she come from?), some guy named Buzzy, and three crazy guys who called my date “four-eyes.” This was not a fun date, but it certainly was memorable. I did get home on time, and all was forgiven. Neither of us remembers our third date, but it must have happened and must have been followed by many more. Eventually, earning that coveted college degree by a specific date didn’t seem so important. My sweetie became my number-one obsession. What was it that attracted me to this off-beat guy? Answers to questions like that are never easy. He loved music and had a fabulous ability to whistle, but that wasn’t really it. There was something special behind that rough surface that appealed to me. I do know that I liked the fact that he wouldn’t let me control him. Previous casual boyfriends had seemed like slaves, doing anything to keep a girl happy. Of course, this was during the Vietnam War, and many young men had been looking for a girl to marry so that they could stay home from the fight. Usually, by the second date, a boy had brought the prospective bride home to meet his folks. My sweetheart had already been to Vietnam and was now working himself through college and planning his future— which now included me. I felt comfortable with this guy, and loved. He was the first person who told me he loved me. You gotta love that! Nearly 50 years later, I’m still loving it. WE

Precision Compounding Custom Medications, Pure and Simple By Jackie Byers
More than a decade ago, Nancy Johnson and Jodi Peterson established Precision Compounding in Omaha. They provide personalized medications to meet the unique needs of each of their clients. Mass-produced medications may work well for some patients. However, many patients can benefit from customized preparations. If your doctor has prescribed a medication, and you want it to be prepared just right, with pure ingredients, in a state-of-the-art sterile lab, Nancy, Jodi, and the team at Precision Compounding can get the job done for you. The whole facility at Precision Compounding is welcoming, tasteful, and comfortable. They emphasize great client service, so you can expect to be greeted as you enter and made to feel welcome. You can even watch them create your medications because their lab is on site and has windows on three sides. In addition to their immaculate lab, says degreed pharmacist Lisa Baine, “we have a private consultation room. When we fill a new prescription, we make sure the client fully understands how it works and how to take it. We answer any questions during the consultation.” Many of their clients dislike being stuck with needles or swallowing pills, Lisa notes. If you don’t like those things, either, you’re in luck. In many cases, a prescription that is normally given by injection or as a pill can be prepared with a different delivery system. “Many can be delivered by cream,” Lisa says. “Others can be troches, which will dissolve in your cheek or under your tongue.” Part of the service at Precision Compounding includes patient follow-up to ensure that the medication is working well. This careful kind of service is not what you get in a typical pharmacy, but it’s par for the course at Precision Compounding. Whatever your needs for taking your medicine, Precision Compounding’s goal is to make it effective and easy for you. Compounded medicines have many applications. Some patients have allergies or intolerance to substances like lactose and food dyes, which can be present as inactive ingredients in mass-produced medications. Adverse reactions to these substances can be avoided by taking customized medication that does not include such ingredients. The same can be said for people who have skin sensitivities to particular detergents or dyes and for vegans and vegetarians, who desire plant-based medications that do not contain animal products. Precision Compounding can handle whatever restrictions you may have and prepare treatments to meet your needs. “We stay up to the minute on the needs of our current and future clients to ensure their trust,” Lisa asserts. Precision Compounding’s business in bioidentical hormones is increasing. Here, the purity of preparations
18
July 2019
is so important. “Clients who value the improvements Owners Jodi Peterson and Nancy Johnson (front) in their lives from taking hormones know that ours are with the Precision 100 percent what they are supposed to be,” Lisa says. The Compounding staff term “bioidentical hormones” means that the chemical structure of the hormone you’re taking is exactly the same as the hormone produced by the human body. These hormone treatments are a perfect fit for the receptors in your body. Years ago, the perception of taking hormones was all about menopause. Now, bioidentical hormones have widespread applications. Of course, men have become aware of the efficacy of testosterone therapy, but properly prepared bioidenticals have many applications. The conditions that bioidentical hormones can improve include many skin conditions in children and adults as well as male and female sexual dysfunction. They can also target problems like anxiety, fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, and loss of muscle strength. Those of us with pets know how difficult it can be to convince an animal to tolerate a medication. Precision Compounding can help with this, as well! They often prepare prescriptions for veterinarians. If your dog or cat will not swallow a pill, the team at Precision Compounding can prepare the medication in several other forms, including liquids and topical applications. They can also add flavors to make medication more palatable, like a salmon-flavored paste for your finicky cat. Just as a pet appreciates medicine disguised as a flavored treat, a child in need of medicine who cries at needles and chokes on pills will appreciate a flavored disguise. Please remember to keep all medications out of reach after administering a dose—you don’t want your child sneaking a taste. Precision Compounding has many services to offer patients who want their medications to be a more precise fit for their needs. Stop in at 15722 West Center Road to see the beautiful lab and visit with one of the pharmacists. For more information, call 402-932-6373 or visit them online at pcrxomaha.com. WE

Fresh Concept
Money Matters What Works for You? By Janette Calabro
For those of us who have ditched the idea of hiding our money under the floorboards, the two most obvious choices to keep our money safe are a bank or a credit union. Both offer checking and savings accounts, loans, and other financial products. Both are likely to sport a candy dish on the counter. What are the real differences between them? First of all, there’s size. Credit unions usually serve smaller communities, while banks can stretch nationwide or beyond. Because banks are bigger, and they’re in business to make a profit, they usually offer a wider range of products. Credit unions are non-profit organizations and are member-owned. That means that when you join, you are part owner of the credit union. One of the biggest benefits to joining a credit union is that, as a non-profit institution, they can pass their savings on to members in the form of lower interest rates on loans and higher interest rates on investments. How do you join a credit union? Membership eligibility requires a common bond among members, which may be different for each organization. That bond may include living, working, worshipping, or attending school in specific areas. Often, a specific community or profession will gain you membership. You’ll see many of the same things at a credit union that you’d expect to see at a bank when you walk through the front door; the clear winner depends on your preference. A credit union might pay more attention to personal detail about you and the community (though smaller community banks may offer quite personal service). The mid-size to larger banks have more of an edge when it comes to technology, and they usually offer more branches and ATMs. Banks usually have more products and online services to choose from. The tradeoff is a personal choice. You might prefer a better interest rate on that new vacation savings at a credit union instead of the cutting-edge technology a bank offers to access it. Another way to look at the cooperative anatomy of a credit union is that a member-owned financial cooperative works by democratic control, usually cutting out the middleman. One member’s savings eventually ripen into another member’s loan. Credit unions are often involved in the community—people helping people. Is your money safer at a credit union or a bank? It’s just as safe in either place. Just like a bank’s FDIC insurance, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) governs the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, insuring deposits up to $250,000 for a single ownership account with no beneficiaries at federally insured institutions. NCUA states that your savings are “federally insured to at least $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government.” One note of caution: make sure that your credit union is federally chartered. State-chartered organizations work differently, with private insurers, and
20
July 2019
are not backed by the federal government. Both banks and credit unions work hard to protect personal data with strict regulatory compliance and welltrained employees. Policies and procedures to safeguard personal information govern the daily process of financial institution employees. Confidential files containing member or customer information are locked in file cabinets. If sensitive information needs to be disposed of, it goes in a shred bin in a secure location, inaccessible to others. Documents are shredded at the end of each business day. Computers use a password-activated screen saver, and screens are locked when an employee leaves the office or work area. Confidential information, whether transmitted electronically in an email or stored online, is required to be encrypted. That means that only authorized parties can access it. Protecting consumer information is vital, and there are numerous safeguards in place to make sure your personal information doesn’t get into the wrong hands. What can you do to secure your own personal information? Some basic ideas are to use encrypted websites only. Keep your passwords private and complex, changing them often. Guard against scammers’ latest schemes with security software, and keep it updated. If you’re purchasing a home or refinancing, make sure that your lender is registered through the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS). This regulatory agency governs compliance and licensing requirements. Choose a reputable lender—that way, attention can be focused on the details of your mortgage financing rather than concern about your loan officer’s credentials. Navigating the process for mortgage preapproval or a refinance can be daunting. The highly regulated mortgage industry comes with a plethora of information, which can often overwhelm consumers. If your loan officer throws too many acronyms or foreign-sounding phrases at you (think loan-to-value or debt-to-income), take the time to ask what they mean. The terms aren’t that hard to explain—for example, the debt-to-income ratio is arrived at by dividing your minimum monthly debt by your monthly gross income. That ratio shows the bank if you’re able to repay the loan you’re asking for. The right mortgage is best found after you apply for a preapproval. Remember that there’s a difference between a prequalification and a preapproval. With a
www.womensedition.com
prequalification, the consumer agrees to give basic information about credit, debt, income, and assets. With a preapproval, on the other hand, a lender verifies your income via pay stubs, tax returns, and W2s or 1099s. That means that a human actually underwrites the loan, which is attractive for a competitive seller and brings peace of mind for you as the buyer. The underwriter will also check to see if assets are available for closing funds, so be sure to have bank statements available. With a preapproval letter in your pocket, sellers know that you’re ready to buy and that you know what kind of mortgage loan you’re approved for. The most common loan types include conventional, FHA, and VA. (Of course, there are specialty loans, but we’ll save those for another article.) Conventional loans are not guaranteed by the federal government and usually cater to buyers who are prepared to make larger down payments. For those who have lower funds available up front or higher debt-to-income ratios, an FHA loan might be a better choice. FHA stands for Federal Housing Administration, and it’s managed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). FHA loans require a down payment of 3 and 1/2 percent. One disadvantage of an FHA loan is that you’ll pay mortgage insurance for the life of the loan. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers loans with no down payment to military service members and their families. Both FHA and VA loans are backed by the federal government—that means that if a borrower defaults, the lender may be reimbursed by the government for losses. One more type of mortgage deserves some face time. A reverse mortgage, insured by FHA, allows seniors who are 62 years or older to convert equity in their home to cash, without a monthly
payment. Instead of monthly payments, you need to pay back the entire loan once you no longer live at the property. You can take the cash in a lump sum for debt consolidation or even to purchase a lakeside vacation home. A reverse mortgage can be a good choice in certain circumstances, but do consider that you’re likely using a substantial amount of your home’s equity. This is definitely one to discuss in detail with your loan officer. We’re always hearing about interest rates—they’re high, or they’re declining, or they’re historically low! That’s great info, but it doesn’t tell you where they come from. Three forces determine daily mortgage rates, which are “daily” because all three forces change every day, sometimes more than once. First, the Federal Reserve sets the federal funds rate. Next, investor demand for U.S. Treasury notes and bonds impacts long-term and fixed interest rates. Last is the banking industry. Credit unions and banks raise or lower interest rates based on business needs. That’s right—one lender’s rates may be higher than another. That’s why it’s good to shop around. Often, lenders will match a rate if you can prove it was offered elsewhere. This is a lot of information, and we’re only dancing around the basics. Don’t worry! A good loan officer or a seasoned personal banker can help you navigate the field by addressing questions without overwhelming you with too much information. Next time you’re sitting in the lobby, waiting to open a checking account or take out a mortgage loan, pop a piece of candy from the candy bowl, and jot down questions for the experts. You deserve answers to all of them, and you can get the answers you need from the pros at a bank or a credit union. Goldsmith Silversmith Decades of Custom Jewelry in the Old Market
By Marge Shoemaker
Are you in the market for a custom-designed piece of jewelry? Whether you’re sure about what you want or just have a vague idea, Goldsmith Silversmith is the place to go. Owner Dwaine Ferguson is an artist and an artisan. His creativity shines through in his collection of sketches. “I have notebooks full of sketches,” Dwaine says. “It’s the way I think. I come up with an idea for a design and sketch it out.” His drawing skills, as well as his talent for bringing an idea to life, stem from his studies as an architectural draftsman (that’s the person who draws up plans that others have designed and will build). His ideas come from many different places: nature, fashion, architectural details, customers’ suggestions—anywhere! His passion for jewelry design comes from his own love of jewelry. He especially loves pearls. “I’m known as ‘The Pearl Guy.’ I don’t just buy them…I collect them!” When you go to Goldsmith Silversmith for a piece

You can come in with a design you’ve cut from a magazine, a sketch you’ve drawn yourself, an heirloom piece, a loose stone you’ve fallen in love with, or just an idea—whatever you’ve got, Dwaine will come up with something that will make it real. Oncology Associates Be a Person, Not Just a Patient By Marge Shoemaker
In the Omaha metropolitan area, we are fortunate to have a large choice of excellent hospitals offering health care in every specialty. If you find yourself in need of care in the areas of oncology (cancer) or hematology (blood disorders), the physicians at Oncology Associates can provide you with the skilled and compassionate care you need. Tim Dorius, MD, is one of two physicians at Oncology Associates, but he didn’t always know he wanted to be a doctor. Dr. Dorius started his career in the natural gas industry in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked for a company that looked at the geology of a region and suggested locations for drilling wells. He decided that he wanted to go to medical school, instead, and began taking pre-med courses at night. Eventually, he took the MCAT and gained entrance to the University of Oklahoma Medical School. At school in Oklahoma City, he met his wife, a native of Paraguay, who was studying English. They now have six children, whose interests range from the sciences and performing arts to sports and medicine. “I tell my kids it’s all right to change your mind,” Dr. Dorius says. “You should never be locked into studies or a career you’re not happy with. At least, that worked for me!” He followed his medical degree with a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology/ oncology, both at the University of Nebraska. He joined his colleague, Dr. Irina Popa, at Oncology Associates in August of 2018. Choosing a career involving the treatment of cancer patients offers both challenges and rewards. “Cancer is probably the disease that people fear the most,” he muses. “There are so many different cancers, and each requires a different kind of treatment. Individuals and cancer cells each react differently. Physicians are presented with the challenge of finding which treatment works best with each patient. It isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ situation.” In order to be successful, Dr. Dorius believes it is necessary for the physician and the patient to develop a relationship based on trust and knowledge. “Oncology Associates is a small practice,” he says, “which allows our patients to get to know the staff. We try to create a welcoming environment, which puts our patients more at ease.” Dr. Dorius splits his time between the two offices in Omaha and a clinic in Norfolk, Nebraska. “Patients who live in small towns may have different concerns than those who live in the city…their concerns can be as different as their environments,” he continues. “Different temperaments can affect a person’s attitude toward treatment.” He does, however, appreciate the benefits of living in a city with several major hospitals and a medical research center. “Omaha is a good environment in which to raise a family,” he declares. “In addition to the collegial
26
July 2019
medical environment, there is a wealth of resources available in a number of areas… in education, the arts, entertainment, and many other fields of interest.” Dr. Dorius values a standard of care that must take into account a number of factors. “I try to have an honest discussion with my patients about their goals and expected results,” he comments. “I want to know how they define ‘quality of life,’ because it’s not the same for everyone. I’m also honest about their diagnosis and treatment options. Some prefer surgery; others prefer drugs or chemotherapy.” Through conversation, he is better able to understand his patients’ values, insights, and experiences. “My patients have put their trust in me—I have to get it right!” He’s pleased that immunotherapy has been more widely developed in the past few years. “Some cancers can inhibit the body’s immune system from attacking the cancer. Immunotherapy drugs can prevent the cancer from shutting off immune cells called T-lymphocytes so that they can perform their normal function and, hopefully, attack the cancer cells,” he explains. “We look at the whole person and try to integrate old treatments with new ideas. It’s like building on what is established and improving it.” Dr. Dorius believes that the best thing patients can do is be proactive in their own health care. Get regular check-ups and tests. Let your primary care physician know if there is anything you’re worried about. If you’re interested in popular diets, herbal supplements, or alternative treatments, do your homework. Be sure they are scientifically based and reliably reported. Eat healthy; live healthy; be healthy. Oncology Associates has two offices in Omaha at Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, 8303 Dodge Street, Suite 225, and at West Dodge Medical Plaza, 515 North 162nd Street, Suite 303, as well as an outreach office in Norfolk. The Omaha and Norfolk locations can be reached at 402-354-5860. You can reach the clinic in Blair at 402-426-1239. To find them online, visit oncology.associates. WE

A Wrinkle Road Map Prevention and Treatment
By Loretta McCollum
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but that doesn’t mean your face has to look like a topographical map. You don’t have to settle for hands that resemble well-worn leather, either. Your wrinkles don’t have to define you! To minimize wrinkles, you need to recognize their causes. Sun exposure is a common culprit. The sun’s UV rays cause free radicals to form in our skin layers, damaging elastin fibers and promoting wrinkles. Always use a good sunscreen, and don’t forget to use it on your hands. Smoking also causes skin to age prematurely—another great reason to avoid it. Diet is also a factor. Consuming large amounts of processed foods prevents your skin from being as supple as it could be. Nutrient-rich foods like protein, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables contain the vitamins and minerals needed to help keep your skin soft. Berries, spinach, beans, and walnuts are good examples of foods that contain antioxidants. Avocados and coconut oil are good sources of fat, which is essential to a healthy diet. Drink lots of water. Collagen is the primary connective tissue in the skin, and it’s mostly water. Feeling stressed or tired can make you look older than your years. When you’re stressed and fatigued, your body releases more of the hormone cortisol, which is known to cause premature aging. While you’re sleeping, your body produces HGH (human growth hormone), stimulating cell growth. Of course, fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging
process, so it’s impossible to completely avoid them. Maybe you don’t even want to! After all, wrinkles are an indication of where smiles have been. However, we all want to look our best, and there are several ways to minimize those fine lines and wrinkles. Laser therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses light energy to repair and regenerate skin cells. The laser transmits photons into the skin’s membranes, increasing healthy cell production and promoting healing by increasing collagen production. It also increases blood circulation. This is a good option for the forehead, mouth, and eye areas. Two common types of laser therapy are CO2 laser treatment and erbium laser treatment. CO2 therapy uses short pulses or continuous light beams to remove thin layers of skin with minimal heat damage. Recovery generally takes about two weeks. Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove both surface and moderately deep lines on the face, hands, neck, or chest. Recovery time is usually faster than with CO2 ›››

treatment. This method is more effective on darker skin tones.Your plastic surgeon or dermatologist can recommend the best method for your needs. Chemical peels are popular for wrinkle reduction. They’re typically used on the face, neck, and hands. A chemical peel improves the appearance of wrinkled skin by using a chemical solution to remove the skin’s outer layer. The new skin is smoother and appears less wrinkled. Following treatment, patients may experience sunburnlike symptoms. Patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure for several weeks following the procedure. Ultrasound therapy, similar in process to laser therapy, bypasses the skin’s surface and directs focused ultrasound energy at the structural level to stimulate collagen production. This type of treatment is generally used on the brow and neck, as well as under the chin. Most patients need just one procedure; depending on the skin’s elasticity, multiple treatments may be beneficial. Some immediate results are visible, but full results occur over two to three months. Results last up to one year. Injectables are another wrinkle-busting option. These include Botox, soft tissue fillers, and fat transfers. Botox has been around for quite a while. This noninvasive wrinkle treatment can diminish frown lines and deep creases between the eyebrows and at the corners of the eyes. The toxin is injected into underlying muscle, causing the muscle to relax. The overlying skin gradually smooths out, as the underlying muscle is not in use. The effects last three to four months, at which time the injections can be repeated. This procedure involves little downtime. Soft tissue fillers such as Belotero, Juvederm, and Sculptra contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring body substance. These fillers are injected into the skin using a syringe. They improve the look of wrinkles by increasing the volume under the skin, stretching the skin. Results last between six and 24 months. Fat transfer uses fat cells from the patient’s own body to increase volume under the skin. Fat is removed through liposuction, cleaned, processed, and injected into the wrinkled area. There’s little chance of allergic reaction, and results are visible for up to several years. Don’t let your wrinkles define you. Consult a local professional today to find out which wrinkle treatment is best for you. Balance Take the Time to Seek Inner Peace “If there’s no inner peace, people can’t give it to you. The husband can’t give it to you. Your children can’t give it to you. You have to give it to you.”—Linda Evans Inner peace had never really been a goal in my life. I have always been a big goal setter—with business, mostly. I have owned Women’s Edition magazine for 33 years. It truly was my entire existence. My life revolved around the magazine. My passion was, and still is, to help small business owners succeed. The problem was, I never took the time to balance my life. I never took the time to seek my inner peace. “You’ll never find peace of mind until you listen to your heart.” —George Michael When I became a widow 10 years ago, I was content to keep doing what I had always done. I chose not to do any self-reflection, not to take any time to balance my life. I continued to set goals for the company, for my customers, for my readers. Hmm…perhaps it would have been better if I had taken some time to seek my joy, my inner peace. “The key to keeping your balance is knowing when you’ve lost it.” —Anonymous
By Janet Van deWalle
Balance in one’s life is tricky. As women, we are pulled in multiple directions. Kids. Careers. Husbands. Friends. What I’ve observed is that most of us choose to put ourselves on the back burner…if we even make it to the stove! We choose to not take care of ourselves. Taking the time to seek inner peace? Hey, I think most of us feel that if we get a power nap, we have succeeded in taking care of us. “When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life.” —Jean Shinoda Bolen What I’ve learned over the years is that balance is important. Getting way too high or way too low is not only unproductive, it is exhausting. Taking care of my Inner Being, listening to my Inner Being, makes my days more joyful. That said, if someone were to take a microscope to the “reality” of my life right now, it might seem anything but peaceful. Lots going on. Lots of challenges. Guess what? I am learning to slow down. I am learning to breathe. I am discovering inner peace. It’s my goal every single day. I am at peace. “Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.” —Saint Francis de Sales

The Lazy Hazy Days of Summer How Do You Celebrate? After a cold winter and a wet spring, all of us are ready for the warmth of summer. Officially, summer begins on June 21st, with the summer solstice. This is when Earth’s northern hemisphere faces the sun, bringing us the longest day of the year. It also generally brings warm weather, which makes us start thinking of summer and outdoor activities. Whether I was teaching or attending classes, I would always yearn for the relatively carefree days away from stuffy classrooms. I looked forward to working in the yard, going for evening strolls, or meeting neighbors on the patio for a cold drink and good conversation. The kids anxiously awaited time for outside play, baseball games, and family trips. My husband had an annual business meeting in July. The location varied but included exotic cities like San Diego, Philadelphia, Charleston, Scottsdale, Coeur d’Alene, Colorado Springs, Jackson Hole, and Salt Lake City. On these trips, we would meet up with friends from across our great nation. We took the kids whenever possible. We’d spend the days touring historic sites, visiting museums, or just hanging out while Dad worked. After his week of hard work and long meetings, we planned a brief getaway to play and relax. Jaunts included overnight white water rafting trips on the Salmon River in Idaho and the Colorado River through the Utah Canyonlands, as well as staying at resorts in Sedona and Myrtle Beach. In later years, we took road trips

with our grandsons, hoping to have them enjoy similar sights and experiences. Shortly after retirement, we bought property on a local lake. Summer’s arrival here is heralded by boats sprouting in driveways, dandelions dotting yards, and grandchildren arriving for visits. The warmer days are filled with growing flowers, growling lawn mowers, and whirling weed-eaters. We look forward to peaceful evenings “toodling” on the lake or gathering on someone’s patio for snacks and drinks. The weeks around Independence Day bring fireworks displays of all sizes. The community sponsors a major fireworks extravaganza on the Saturday before the holiday. Gaily decorated boats dot the lake, seeking the best vantage point. Neighborhood fireworks displays contribute the perfume of sulfur and smoke to the hazy skies. Courtesy (and local law) demands that displays are finished by 10:30…everyone’s tired after a busy day. We all enjoy the quiet time watching the kids chase fireflies. Tomorrow will be time for cleaning up the day’s debris. What are some of your favorite summer activities? How do you celebrate our nation’s birth? Whether you stay home, visit friends, or hit the road, have a great—and safe—summer. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Standing the Test of Time Wood Flooring: As Popular as Ever
By Robyn V. Powell
One of the most important design decisions when building or remodeling a home is your choice of flooring. Floors are the foundation of a home and set the tone for your color palette and decorating style. When it comes to beauty and durability, no other flooring offers the benefits or unique qualities of hardwood flooring. Warm and stylish, hardwood floors add a beautiful natural element to any room and add value to your home. Plus, they can last a lifetime! Generations of homeowners have made hardwood their flooring of choice, and there are selections to suit any style. If new flooring is in your plans, grounding yourself in wood flooring basics and exploring a few of the latest trends will help you make the best choice for your home. When considering hardwood, the first decision is whether to use solid wood or engineered wood. Both are excellent options, but there are important differences—and each has benefits and deficits. Solid wood planks are constructed from one piece of wood, usually three quarters of an inch thick, and can be sanded and refinished many times over. Planks can be made from many different species of wood and range in width from five to 11 inches. Solid wood planks offer the greatest choice in terms of design options and can be customized and stained in virtually any color. A major drawback of solid wood is its high price.

July 2019
Engineered wood is a layered product made of a strip of hardwood, usually half an inch thick, on top of a base of high-quality plywood. Engineered planks have a maximum width of five inches. The layered construction of engineered wood limits the number of times it can be sanded and refinished. It comes pre-finished and is available in a wide array of colors. While not as durable as solid wood, its resistance to warping and flexing means that it can be installed in rooms with high humidity levels, making it a good option for bathrooms, kitchens, and even basements. When it comes to the latest trends, there’s been a shift toward either very dark or very light wood floors, with a prevalence of wider planks and cooler undertones. Wood floors with brown and gray undertones are trending, while those with red and yellow undertones are less popular. Nothing says classic and elegant like rich dark floors, and tones like ebony and cof- ›››

fee have seen a surge in popularity. The downside of dark floors is that they are a bit more challenging to keep clean. Light or whitewashed wood floors are a beautiful complement to modern interiors. These lighter tones work well with the cooler paint colors seen in contemporary homes. Popular wood species include white oak, French oak, hickory, and walnut. Matte and satin finishes have replaced glossy finishes. Both popular and practical, matte finishes are easier to clean and look better longer. High-grade polyurethanes are an environmentally friendly way of protecting floors with a finish that is hard and durable. Oil finish, with zero VOC emissions, penetrates the wood to give a softer, more natural look that creates a rich patina over time. The downside of oil finishes are their higher cost and lower durability (that is, spills can still absorb into the wood). In terms of cost, hardwood is more expensive up front. It’s a good investment, though, since it’s made to last a lifetime. Other flooring choices, including carpet and tile, are meant to be replaced after a number of years. If you live in your home for more than a few years, wood is a better investment. As personal preferences change, solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished to reflect any taste or trend. Hardwood flooring stands up to heavy traffic—children, toys, and even pets. With normal maintenance and cleaning, hardwood floors will look great for many years. Sweeping and mopping with a damp mop will keep floors clean. Spot cleaning can be done with gentle cleaners made for wood floors. Another benefit of hardwood is the relief it can bring for people with allergies and asthma. Unlike carpeting, which traps and harbors dust, dander, and other allergens that can make breathing difficult, wood floors are easy to clean, and allergens can be quickly removed with a damp cloth or mop. Hardwood flooring is a major investment, so hiring the right people to install, repair, or refinish your hardwood flooring is critical. Ask friends, family, and neighbors for referrals, and always ask for references. Stores that sell flooring often have a list of reputable installers. Taking the time to make the right wood selection and hiring the right team to install it will ensure that you have beautiful flooring you will love for years. Foundation One Bank Banking That’s Truly Personal By Marge Shoemaker
Lynn Paul has been in the banking industry for her entire working career. “When I was in college, I worked part-time in a community bank, and it gradually grew to a full-time job,” she recalls. “I loved helping our clients…they felt more like friends because of our size.” She worked for two community banks for 37 years, and she liked the variety of duties and responsibilities she had in a smaller bank. “I wore many hats,” she says, “and I learned from them all. Work was fun!” When that bank was bought by a larger one, her job duties changed. “I became the Director of Operations of that bank,” she relates, “and learned another slate of skills.” While she enjoyed her work, she was approached by Foundation One Bank, and, in February of 2019, she was able to return to the smaller community banking as CFO of Foundation One Bank. Foundation One Bank was established in 2009 by Randal J. (Randy) Burns. He and a group of investors saw the need for more personalized banking, and the opportunity arose to purchase Western State Bank in Waterloo. Randy changed the name to Foundation One Bank to be consistent with their belief that “every great relationship starts with a strong foundation.” Lynn describes herself as a people person. “I like being where I can see people,” Lynn explains. “Here, my office has glass walls and natural light. If I need privacy, I can just close the door.” Through her degree in human resources, Lynn learned to mentor people. “It’s fulfilling to watch people reach their capacity, to see them bloom,” she muses. “I feel like I contributed in some way to their success.” Foundation One Bank allows all of its employees the opportunity to work hard and encourages them to give back to the community. Lynn describes a community bank as one that concentrates on customer service and one-on-one associations. Employees at each of the three branches can make decisions that have local impact. “When I make new hires, I try to determine their ability to adjust—to wear different hats—as the occasion demands,” she explains. “I’ve always loved my jobs and have been blessed with a very rewarding career in banking. I’ve never been a ‘TGIF’ kind of girl. I’m more apt to spend a weekend thinking of new challenges and approaching the week with ‘thank goodness it’s Monday.’ I encourage that attitude in my hires.” Foundation One Bank may be small, but they offer everything that larger banks offer, with a bonus— personal attention. Lynn reminds us that, with advanced communication capability and online or electronic banking, clients today want convenience. Besides the original location in Waterloo, there are two branches in Omaha’s western suburbs. “We try to match branch

locations with client addresses,” Lynn explains. Foundation One Bank goes over and above the norm to get to know their Lynn Paul, CFO clients. They offer the same products and services as the “big boys,” Lynn says, but with a personal touch. Lynn wants Foundation One Bank customers to feel the difference. “Say you have a low-rate mortgage and you experience a setback, like a death in the family or the sudden loss of a job. We are willing to work with you…to understand your story and help as much as possible.” That’s the kind of personal service that you can expect from a community bank like Foundation One Bank. Many of the clients at Foundation One Bank are women in business and those who own their own businesses. Many of the bank’s officers and employees are women, which can eliminate some “Say you have a low-rate of the intimidation that accompanies business mortgage and you experience banking. “There are always struggles with a business a setback, like a death in the start-up. The struggles are family or the sudden loss somewhat alleviated when there is an understanding of a job. We are willing between parties,” Lynn muses. “The men at to work with you…to Foundation One Bank work understand your story and with the women here on an equal footing. Everyone has help as much as possible.” a voice, regardless of gender. I think that carries over to our clients. You are important to us, regardless of your gender.” Lynn has two adult daughters, who are both strong women. “I want them to know that they are as important as anyone else,” she states firmly. Foundation One Bank’s Omaha branches are located at 4141 North 156th Street, Suite 101 (402502-5558) and at 17445 Arbor Street (531-2150060). The original location in Waterloo is at 23804 Cedar Drive (402-779-2545). Find them online at foundationonebank.com. Home Service Agreements What Are They, and Do You Need One?
By Anne Yankus
When purchasing or maintaining a house, a home service agreement (or home service contract) isn’t usually the first thing on your mind—but maybe it should be. A home service agreement is something you can purchase to ensure you won’t have to pay for any unexpected breakdowns to your home’s systems or major appliances. Under a home service agreement, your appliances can be fixed for only a small service fee using your agreement’s convenient repair resources. Service contracts are usually customizable to suit your needs. One important thing to note is that home service contracts are more like extended warranties than true product warranties. Like warranties, they provide service for an item over a set amount of time, but, unlike standard warranties, they must be purchased separately. Also unlike new product warranties, service contracts can be purchased to cover older items already in a home that you’re purchasing. Since they’re not offered through the product’s manufacturer, you can always check with reputable websites like BBB or Consumer Reports to make sure the service company is legit. The most helpful service contracts cover items that aren’t protected by your homeowners insurance and allow for customization, meaning you can choose which items to include in your service contract. Some of the most commonly included items are large appliances, HVAC systems, lawn sprinkler systems, and backyard
NOW HIRING
pools. Some contracts also include electrical surge protection. Large appliance service contracts typically cover items like washers, dryers, refrigerators, and stoves. If one of these items breaks down while your service contract is still active, you call the service company, and they send out a licensed professional in your area to assess the damage. If the repair is covered by your contract, you’ll only need to pay a service fee (up to around $125, depending on your agreement), and the rest will be covered by your contract. Home appliance contracts can be very helpful to anyone who is purchasing a home with older appliances that may be near the end of their lifespan or newer appliances that have just passed their warranty period. HVAC system agreements are similar to large appliance contracts; sometimes, they’re even covered under the same service contract company. HVAC agreements can cover as ›››

few as one or up to all of the heating, cooling, ventilation, and water heating items in your home. You can purchase an agreement to cover existing HVAC elements in a home you’re moving into, or you can purchase an extended warranty/service agreement when you have a new element installed in your house. Depending on the contract, HVAC service agreements can also cover regular maintenance and inspections. If you have a lawn sprinkler system, you might want a service contract to cover it. Some things you’ll want to review with the provider before you decide on a sprinkler or lawn service agreement are what time periods are covered under your contract and how much maintenance and service are provided. Since lawns aren’t watered year-round, some contracts will only cover six months out of the year, and many service providers will offer varying degrees of maintenance. Pool service agreements are more for regular service and maintenance than an extended warranty to prevent you from paying out of pocket for breakdowns. Most pool service agreements include sending a professional to check the skimmer, pumps, and pH balance of the water; only some contracts also cover replacement parts or extensive cleanup. Last, but not least, are electrical surge protection agreements. For surge protection, you needn’t look any farther than your local electrical provider to see if they offer some kind of surge protection. Surge protection agreements cover the repair or replacement of all home electronics that are damaged by any kind of electrical surge, including direct lightning strikes. These agreements often also include home appliances that may not be covered for surge damage in another service agreement. Cost is usually a low monthly payment that can be added on to your monthly electric bill. Are home service agreements worth it? With HVAC and home appliance service agreements, the savings are obviously financial—you can tell when you end up paying only $100 for a huge repair. With lawn sprinkler and pool systems, your biggest savings is time. Whether you’re buying a new house or just replacing an old appliance, home service agreements can be a great boon for your pocketbook and peace of mind. Hormone Replacement Therapy Ease Into Aging!
By Leslie Byrne
Getting older cannot be avoided, but both men and women may be able to smooth the transition into their aging bodies with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). As we age, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle to feel the best we can. HRT is one way for women to ameliorate menopause symptoms and for men to improve waning testosterone levels. Like any medical decision, it’s important to carefully consider the risks and benefits before deciding to start HRT. Anyone considering HRT should have a clear understanding of what treatment options are available, how it will be administered, the expected length of treatment, and what symptoms are being treated. Before starting HRT, blood work should be done and analyzed. Women should have a female hormone panel done. This test measures the levels of estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones. Women should also have a complete blood count (CBC) test. Men interested in starting HRT will need a blood test to measure baseline testosterone levels and to test their overall health. Menopause is the most common reason that women choose HRT—in fact, almost half of menopausal and post-menopausal women in the United States have taken some form of hormone replacement. Menopause is a natural part of the aging process, when hormone levels decrease and menstruation ceases. Unfortunately, it can come with troublesome symptoms like hot
flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, and persistent vaginal dryness. Exercise and dietary changes can often help decrease these symptoms; if they do not, many women turn to HRT for relief. HRT hormones for women generally include progesterone and estrogen, both of which are naturally produced by the human body. Sometimes, HRT treatment for women contains estrogen only or even testosterone. The most common reason that men seek HRT is waning testosterone, commonly known as low-T. Testosterone is an important hormone that helps with bone density, muscle mass, facial and body hair, sex drive, and sperm production. As men age, their testosterone levels naturally decrease. This can cause a decrease in sexual interest, change sleep patterns, affect muscle mass, or make men feel less motivated or interested in things that normally interest them. Testosterone therapy can also help reverse the effects

of hypogonadism, a condition when the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone to begin with. As with women, the waning hormone levels in men are a natural process. HRT will not reverse normal aging, but it can treat the unpleasant symptoms of unbalanced hormone levels. There are different treatment options for HRT; the best choice depends on the individual person and symptoms. For women, estrogen can be administered by pill, skin patch, gel, cream, or spray. Lowdose vaginal products, such as creams, tablets, or a ring, help mostly with vaginal symptoms and don’t treat issues like hot flashes, night sweats, or osteoporosis. Most women will be given a treatment of both progesterone and estrogen. A woman who no longer has a uterus would only receive estrogen. HRT treatment for men can be administered with a skin patch, gel, injections, or implants. A pill is available but can be hard on the liver. Like any other treatment, HRT comes with both benefits and risks. It’s important to do your homework, ask plenty of questions, and know exactly what treatments you are receiving and why. For women, HRT can increase the risk of some cancers and cardiovascular conditions. Women who already have these conditions are not strong candidates for HRT. For men, testosterone therapy may contribute to sleep apnea, prostate issues, and other conditions. Before starting HRT, discuss your overall health with your doctor and consider your personal benefits and risks. The length of time a person stays on HRT is as individual as the treatment plan. Many women, for example, choose to cease treatment once the symptoms of menopause pass. Talk to your provider about how long you should be treated, and schedule regular office visits during your treatment. If you think HRT is right for you, look for a hormone replacement clinic staffed by medical professionals with specific training in hormone conditions. Schedule a meeting with an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist specializes in hormones and hormonerelated conditions and is an excellent place to start. Do your research, have all of the appropriate tests run before starting HRT, and decide what is best for you. Feeling good while your body changes is not a luxury—you deserve it! Don’t just suffer through years of uncomfortable hormonerelated symptoms. Talk to your doctor and find out if you’re a good candidate for HRT. An Inside Look
Does Your Home’s Exterior Need a Lift? Call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company By Marge Shoemaker
Your home is likely the most valuable investment you have. It endures a lot of wear and tear…some of which we don’t notice until we look for it. Now that summer weather is beckoning us outdoors, it’s time to take stock. How are your windows? If they’re like mine, they need a good washing—inside and out! Can you see clearly through them, once they’re clean? If your windows are doublepaned, there shouldn’t be any moisture trapped between the panes. Condensation is an indication of a broken seal or crack. Check your doors. Do they close securely? Can you see gaps between the frame and the door? Do you feel a breeze when the door is closed? Any of these issues could indicate a problem. If your door is solid but just out of style, perhaps it’s time for an inviting new door to greet your guests. Inspect your siding. Is it cracked? Are pieces loose or missing? Have recent storms created pockmarks or scars? Does it need a coat of paint? If you’re tired of painting, you may want to replace old wooden siding with something more maintenance-free. How about your roof? Are your shingles intact? Are you finding plant sprouts in the gutters or downspouts clogged with debris? Do heavy rains bring water damage into the house? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, I suggest you call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company. Al Albracht bought Perma Stone (later changing the name to Perma Siding) in 1958, and it’s been familyrun ever since. Tom Albracht and his brother, Steve, have run the company together since the early 1990s. “Dad bought the company the year I was born,” Tom notes. “We learned the company from the ground up. My siblings and I have all helped out in one capacity or another over the years.” Although Tom and Steve are not ready to retire yet, Tom says they’re hoping the next generation will eventually take over and keep it in the family. The Albracht brothers are particular about the products they present to their clients. “We want to give our clients the best materials possible so that we (and the manufacturers) can offer a reliable warranty.” Perma Siding deals directly with the manufacturers. By cutting out the middleman, Tom explains, they can offer their customers better prices. If you live in an older home and have put off getting new windows because your windows are unusually sized, Perma Siding can help. “Some older homes won’t accommodate current standard size windows and doors without a lot of retro-fitting,” Tom says. To solve this problem, Perma Siding often has windows and doors custom-made to ensure a good fit. “Custom may cost a little more than what’s
48

found in the big box stores, but a better fit is more economical and efficient in the long run,” he advises. One of the manufacturers that Tom and Steven Albracht Perma Siding works with is ProVia. “For years, we’ve used ProVia doors because of their high energy-conservation rating,” Tom says. Recently, they’ve expanded their association with ProVia to include windows, too. According to a survey of remodelers and contractors in Remodeling magazine, ProVia vinyl windows are rated number one in a quality-ranking list of 45 manufacturers. That was no surprise to Tom. “We’re comfortable, based on our past experience with the manufacturer and this survey, that the change to ProVia windows is beneficial to everyone concerned,” he states proudly. Perma Siding has worked with other manufacturers for years, building trust on all sides. Leaf Sentry gutter covers, produced locally in Elkhorn, are worry-free. Mastic siding, virtually maintenance-free, has been a reliable mainstay for years. IKO offers an assortment of shingles, including architecturally designed composites that resemble shake shingles. DaVinci shingles are molded to resemble tile. “We know our manufacturers have high standards in maintaining quality control over their wares, and our manufacturers know that we hire competent workmen to install their products,” Tom shares. “Our crews know that we and the manufacturers will stand behind their work. We pass all that trust—and savings—on to our customers.” Although some installations depend on the weather, Perma Siding strives to keep their crews working yearround. Siding can be installed in the winter, as can doors and windows, though warmer weather may offer more comfort for the homeowner. Roofs, gutters, and decks generally require warmer weather for safety reasons. Plan ahead. Allow time for you and the crew to prepare. Call now for an estimate. Bids are good for six months. Albracht Perma Siding is bonded, insured, and licensed by both the City of Omaha and the State of Nebraska. The office is located at 10723 Mockingbird Drive, in Omaha. The Evolving Mutual Fund Market Active Versus Passive Management By George Morgan
Americans currently have between 17 and 18 trillion dollars invested in mutual funds. Yes, that’s trillion, with a T. That’s about 80 percent of the total value of the American stock market. A significant fraction of these holdings are in 401(k)s. This is unfortunate, since the only funds that are available to 401(k) account holders are those selected by a broker. The United States Supreme Court has noted that brokers sometimes make recommendations that are influenced by their own best interests and not the best interests of the investor. Mutual funds began in the 1930s and were dramatically different from the funds we know today. Starting an investment business during the Great Depression and just before the start of World War II was perhaps not a great business model. During the early years of the mutual fund industry, funds struggled and experienced slow growth—or no growth at all. During the 1960s and 1970s, public optimism soared, and mutual funds began to attract the attention of investors. The industry developed a group of funds known as Go-Go funds because the managers were going after new companies that were attracting the public to their new products. American investors began to become familiar with and comfortable with mutual funds, and investments rose rapidly. There are two basic types of mutual funds. The type that most people are familiar with is the actively managed fund. This type of fund has a portfolio manager who buys and sells stocks to increase the fund’s investment performance. These active managers are highly compensated and expect bonuses in the millions of dollars. Commissions on the most popular funds were in the 8 percent range, which meant that if you bought one, you had to make 8 percent just to break even. In 1979, Jack Bogle started a company called Vanguard and invented a new type of fund called an index fund. An index fund does not have active management. It simply buys all the stocks in an index (for example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average), in the same proportion that they appear in the index. There is no trading in an effort to improve performance. Mr. Bogle was criticized by the financial services industry because his concept was so simple. Brokers and others in the industry were convinced that, in order for investors to survive and prosper in the market, they would need the expertise of brokers. Mr. Bogle, on the other hand, was telling the investing public that they could get along fine without the financial services industry and their large fees…that they would even get better returns on their own. During the 1980s and early 1990s, there were portfolio managers whose investment returns were phenomenal. There were fund managers like Peter Lynch and Bill Miller who, year after year, produced doubledigit performances. Around the year 2000, this began to change. The performance of high-flying fund managers
50
July 2019
started to drop off. Within a year, Mr. Lynch and Mr. Miller retired. A variety of factors led to this dramatic turnaround. First, the market was changing. It was becoming more and more electoninc. In the 1980s and 1990s, all the trading was done by human beings on the floor of the exchanges. This was time-consuming and laborintensive, and it made it possible for money managers to buy and sell before the general public could. Then a man from Omaha named Joe Ricketts developed a system that took the humans out of the equation. Trades were made in nanoseconds, and money managers lost their advantage. Related to the above, much of today’s market is dominated by what is known as flash trading. These are programs where companies with giant computer bases search on other computers, just looking at prices. There are no financial analyses involved. Another driving factor in the downfall of actively managed funds was that the market became dominated by the stock of large companies. Wall Street had never experienced the impact of companies like Amazon and Google. These companies could drive the market up or down all by themselves, and it was impossible to pick stocks that nobody else was picking. This is where index funds outperform. They are not second-guessing the market. They are not buying and selling, running up big trading costs that their shareholders will have to pay. When the market goes up, they simply go along for the ride. The final nail in the coffin of actively managed funds is the size of their operations costs. These funds have big trading costs and portfolio managers’ fees. Index funds have none of these costs—99 percent of the investment return goes to the investors, not the fund company. Because of their passive investment approach, index funds are now charging less than 1 percent in fees. Less money for Wall Street means more money for the investor—and what investor wouldn’t like that? Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Today’s Physical Therapy Rehab, Maintenance, Prevention
By Linda Barnes
I’ll admit it—a few years ago, we were skeptical when the doctor ordered physical therapy after my husband injured his back on the job. Six weeks later, we were believers. It seemed like a miracle that he was back to work and pain-free! Now retired, my husband recently had a total knee replacement. It was back to physical therapy, this time with a much more positive attitude. As good as physical therapy was a few years ago, it has gotten better in the meantime. While recovery after injury or rehabilitation after surgery are big parts of physical therapy’s focus, today’s therapists might also attend to geriatric or pediatric conditions. Cardio and pulmonary issues, sports, and women’s health are additional areas of expertise. In any area, physical therapy can help relieve pain and increase strength and mobility, thereby reducing the need for drugs or surgery. Women are statistically more prone to sports injuries than their male counterparts, based mostly on their distinctive physiology. Ankle sprain, shoulder and knee problems, stress fractures, and plantar fasciitis are the most common reasons that women seek help for sports injuries. Treating ankle, shoulder, and knee injuries typically involves specific steps. It may begin with very gentle or even passive therapy (when the therapist moves your body for you). Physical therapy strives to reduce pain, restore motion, strengthen affected muscles and joints, and, finally, achieve optimal movement.

Today, licensed therapists are required to earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. They typically obtain a bachelor’s degree prior to admission to the doctoral program. After earning their degrees from an accredited education program, therapists must pass a state licensure examination. Licensed physical therapists may then enter a residency or fellowship program. Specialty certification is an additional process, during which therapists develop greater expertise in certain areas of treatment, including cardio and pulmonary, electrophysiology, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, sports, and women’s health. Women’s health focuses on specific conditions that females experience, including pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, separation of abdominal muscles, and pelvic prolapse. Treatment can address both prevention and restoration. One in four women experiences some form of pelvic floor issue, but many are unaware that these
www.womensedition.com
issues can be successfully treated. Stress incontinence is a common concern for women. A sudden increase in abdominal pressure causes urine to leak out of the bladder. That increase in pressure might be caused by coughing, laughing, bending, lifting, or sneezing. The root cause of stress incontinence is often pregnancy and childbirth, when the muscles that support the bladder are stretched to their limits. Physical therapists can teach you how to strengthen those muscles with exercises, biofeedback, or even gentle electrical stimulation. Physical therapy may also relieve pelvic pain by helping relax tightened muscles. A specially trained female therapist may use internal manipulation and massage to stretch muscles. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that women deal with three times more often than men do. Physical therapy offers strategies to help keep muscles strong and joints flexible, all of which is important in the management of rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, physical therapists may teach their patients better ways to accomplish everyday tasks, as well as show them how to use assisting devices. A physical therapist’s tools consist of traditional things like exercise (passive or active), massage, heat, and cold. Technology adds to their capabilities with such tools as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction, and diagnostics. My husband started physical therapy the day after his knee replacement surgery, while still in the hospital. Group sessions included gentle bending and lifting of the leg. The second day, he was shown the proper way to negotiate steps and then practiced safely stepping up and down. The third day, having been released from the hospital, he began physical therapy at a nearby rehab facility, with the focus on range of motion, improving balance, and strengthening his leg. The therapists were upbeat and gave much encouragement, taking a personal interest in each client’s recovery. Six weeks of therapy had my husband back on his feet and able to resume normal activities. Whether the issue is arthritis, pelvic problems, or rehab after illness or surgery, physical therapy can be the stepping stone you need to get back to your life. Most is paid for by insurance or Medicare, so there’s no excuse for not getting the best care and the fastest recovery! Sources for this article included: apta.org, webmd.com, and healthline.com. WE

The art of self-defense isn’t just physical…benefits go way beyond the workout. It brings great peace of mind to know that you can protect yourself if the need arises. One powerful plan is to kickstart your training in martial arts. If you want to decrease your chances of becoming a target, and defend yourself if you are, give martial arts a try. Let’s take a look at different types of self-defense as well as their countless benefits. Tae kwon do is an Olympic sport, but you can build a lofty selfdefense system even if you don’t make it to the world stage. This Korean martial art, similar to karate, teaches more than physical control; you’ll learn mind discipline, too. A system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes will help you counterattack in a situation when you may need it most. You’ll learn how to “sweep” or “throw” an attacker. Who doesn’t want to know how to do that? Karate stresses the same self-discipline as all martial arts but with an emphasis on hand strikes. This popular Japanese defense assigns a color-coded belt based on skill level—the most expert level earns a black belt. Judo, created in 1882, became an official Japanese Olympic sport in 1964. Competitive judo focuses on “taking down” or “throwing” your opponent to the ground. You’ll learn to immobilize an opponent with a joint lock or choke hold. (Joint locks are so called because you
push a joint into an unnatural direction.) The point is not to resist a more powerful adversary but to evade the enemy by leading your opponent into losing balance. In Chinese, kung fu is a sort of umbrella term for any skill (not necessarily martial arts) that is acquired through discipline and practice. In the United States, kung fu is defined differently, most often comparing it to Japanese karate as a sect of ancient Chinese martial arts. In fact, the Oxford English Dictionary defines kung fu as “a primarily unarmed Chinese martial art resembling karate.” It’s important to note that this definition may be misused based on inaccurate movie subtitles or dubbing. In the United States, though, you can expect kung fu to refer to martial arts learned for self-defense, exercise, and mental discipline. Imagine defending yourself while also protecting your attacker from injury. Through intense physical and spiritual training,

practitioners of aikido comprehensively throw, strike, and pin their opponents with traditional Japanese weapons such as swords, knives, or even staffs. The secret ingredient is that aikido carries an emphasis on trust and integrity. Think of developing into an ideal warrior, one who transcends conflict. With aikido, you’re not in the fight to kill; the point is to show courage while never sacrificing honor. Krav Maga is a military fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces. It combines boxing, wrestling, and other martial arts. A practitioner is said to be a walking human weapon who is more martial than art. Jujitsu, a weaponless Japanese method of combat, teaches a supple, pliable technique in the form of pinning or joint-locking an opponent. Developed to combat the samurai of feudal Japan, these techniques use an attacker’s energy against him instead of directly opposing it. In gyms around the country today, women practice kickboxing, a stand-up combat kicking and punching drill. Historically developed from karate, women can amp up their physical ability to defend themselves against an attacker while achieving strong legs and six-pack abs. Not bad! Want a little dance in your fight training? Brazilian capoeira combines dance and music into their discipline. Don’t blink, because capoeira moves at lightning speed using the “ginga,” a rocking back and forth movement. It also features speedy leg sweeps with acrobatics. Another form of self-protection is a firearm. A person in the United States is entitled to fire a gun for self-defense, but laws differ from state to state. Once you understand your state’s requirements to get a permit, learn how to handle your gun responsibly at a shooting range. Training prepares you for the unexpected, which is vital to the responsible discharging of a weapon. Health benefits include physical prowess—controlling a firearm takes physical strength and excellent hand-eye coordination. If you want to take your skills to the next level, enroll in private or group classes at your local shooting range. Take the time to learn how to protect yourself! You’ll improve physical conditioning, balance, and self-esteem along the way. There’s something even deeper at work here—a keen awareness of danger, a warrior’s spirit with a fighter’s reflex, even spiritual awareness. Now, that’s worth fighting for! General Vehicle Maintenance Do You Know Where to Begin? By Brennan Hallock
Whether you love or hate the vehicle you’re currently driving, you have to admit that it is one of the most useful pieces of equipment you own. It transports you to work, to gatherings, to stores, to sporting events…the list goes on and on. Because this one piece of equipment is so important to your everyday life, it is essential to keep it properly maintained. Just like anything else with moving parts, a vehicle can run for a while without proper maintenance. Eventually, though, it will have a major breakdown, causing expensive damage that could have been prevented with proper maintenance. The number-one maintenance tip given by nearly every mechanic you ask is to change your oil and oil filter regularly. Oil is often referred to as the engine’s lifeblood, as it is the vital force that keeps parts running smoothly throughout the engine. Over time, particulates from your engine build up in the oil, and this begins to wear on your engine. Oil needs to be changed regularly to keep it clean and free of contaminants that stop the engine from functioning smoothly. It is also important to put the right oil in your vehicle. The biggest question is whether to use petroleum-based or synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is more expensive but has many advantages. These include less friction on your engine, reduced deposits, better function in extreme temperatures, fewer emissions, and a cleaner oil overall. Using synthetic oil in a
newer vehicle can increase the lifespan of the engine. Oil is perhaps the most important fluid to maintain in your vehicle, but it’s certainly not the only one. You also need to consider brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, and washer fluid. These do not need to be replaced as often as your oil, but it’s important that the reservoirs stay filled to make sure everything runs smoothly. Your mechanic can show you how to check your fluid levels so you can keep an eye on them in between visits. Like all batteries, car batteries wear out eventually. If yours wears out in the middle of winter or when you’re far from home with no one to assist you, it can be a major inconvenience! To avoid this kind of surprise, replace your battery on a regular basis. The lifespan of a typical battery is about four to six years,

but some factors can shorten that time. City driving (mostly short, frequent trips) can contribute to a shorter battery lifespan. Cold weather also makes it harder for a battery to hold its charge. If the electrical connections on the battery become corroded, the battery won’t work as well. Lastly, if the car is out of use for a long time, the battery can lose power. Ask your mechanic how to remove the negative connection to prevent this loss of charge during periods of disuse. The belts in your engine wear out over time. The timing belt is critical to the function of the engine and must be replaced approximately every 80,000– 120,000 miles. You can visually inspect the belts by popping the hood and looking for cracks or fraying on the belts inside the engine bay. Have your mechanic give you a tour so you know what to look for. One of the most important pieces of equipment on your car to regularly check is the tires. The tread of a tire is vital to its handling on the road, especially in inclement weather—if the tire is too “bald,” it’s hard for it to get good traction. If you compare the depth of the tread on a new tire to the depth on
an old, worn-out tire, it’s easy to see the difference. When you don’t have any tires to compare to yours, you can do the penny test. Place a penny in the tread of the tire so that Abe Lincoln is upside down. If you can see the top of his head, it is probably time for new tires. Tires need to be rotated every two to six months to make sure that they wear at about the same rate. At this time, your mechanic can also check the alignment and balance (this refers to the angle of your tires). If tires are not aligned, they will wear more in one area than another, and you’ll need new tires sooner. Finally, your transmission needs to be maintained to make sure you have a drivable vehicle. It’s important to have your transmission inspected periodically by a professional. Ask your mechanic whether your vehicle needs the transmission system flushed or just needs the fluid topped off. Help your vehicle get you where you need to go! With simple care and attention to some general maintenance, you can keep your vehicle moving. The Good Life
Pediatric Dentistry Big Benefits for the Smallest Smiles By Maria Harding
Pediatric dental practices are dedicated exclusively to the care of young patients from their baby years through young adolescence. The goal is to ensure that youngsters want to come back for regular checkups and procedures, which are so important to their overall health. The waiting area at a pediatric dental practice might feature brightly colored murals, with activities and books for children. The hygienists and dentists smile and speak directly to children, rather than talking over their heads to a grown-up. Young patients might be given cool sunglasses so the bright swivel light is not blinding them during the dental exam. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend that a child’s first dental examination happen any time after the first tooth erupts, but no later than 12 months of age. Tooth decay can occur as early as the teeth first start to appear. The purpose of early childhood dental exams is not only to promote early detection of potential developmental or growth issues but also to establish a routine of dental care at home and twice-yearly office visits. When children begin seeing a dentist in a positive environment from an early age, it is much less likely that future checkups will be fraught with anxiety. During a routine pediatric dental exam, parents and caregivers are shown techniques that they might use at home to effectively brush and floss a child’s teeth. During this stage in a child’s development, a pediatric dentist may have the child practice brushing on a set of plastic teeth. This allows the dentist and hygienist to teach thorough brushing and flossing in a way that is easily visible, fun, and less invasive than using the child’s own teeth. A pediatric dentist’s instructions to children also serve as reinforcement of the house rules that are being established for self-care. The dentist may even provide fun tools to take home, like sticker charts that praise good habits, miniature dinosaur-shaped toothbrushes, or whimsical flossers. As children grow and become more independent, a parent’s role shifts more toward supervision and positive role modeling. Sticker charts and colorful murals aside, pediatric dentistry offers some very important practical advantages, too. If a more complex medical procedure requires sedation, the staff members in a pediatric dentistry office are very familiar with managing the smaller doses required, as they are committed to exclusively treating children. Additionally, a pediatric dentist has two additional years of education after completing four years of dental school. The additional years of study address children’s physical and emotional growth and development, as well as the medical treatment of children with special needs. Anyone who cares for a child with a disability or special needs will be encouraged to know that 99 percent of pediatric dentists provide service to children with special needs (in
60
July 2019
comparison, only 10 percent of general dentists report providing these same services to children). Other services that are typically offered by pediatric dentists include fluoride applications and molar sealants, treatment of cavities, orofacial injury care, repair of cleft lip and palate anomalies, mild sedation for children with acute anxiety, assessment and treatment for orthodontic needs, and habit consultation (thumb and finger sucking, for example). There are many things to keep in mind when choosing the pediatric dentist that is right for you and your child. Make an appointment to visit the office and meet the providers. Is the waiting area cheerful, clean, and engaging? Consider the location of the dental office and its distance from your home, work, or children’s school. Regarding scheduling, how far in advance do appointments need to be made, and what is the typical wait time at the office? Ask how the office handles emergencies and what their after-hours policy is for urgent care. If convenient, bring your child with you for this visit. It provides a non-stressful way to meet the staff and see the office before exam day. Once your child is scheduled for an appointment, there are other fun ways to become familiar with the dentist’s office and project positivity ahead of time. Point out the building when driving by, and wave hello. “Do you remember meeting Dr. Jones? Do you remember the toys in the lobby? That’s where you’ll go to get your teeth cleaned.” Read books about visits to the dentist’s office. If you have older children who are well-behaved patients at this dentistry practice, bring younger siblings along to witness the good example set by big brothers or sisters. With the proper research and a little advance preparation, a pediatric dentist can help get your child on the path to a lifetime of good dental health. Great Escapes
South Africa Five Ways to See the Big Five By Jackie Williams
Have you ever wanted to go on an African safari, but thought a trip like that was out of your reach? If so, you will be very excited to know that your dreams of seeing the Big Five in person can become a reality without breaking the bank. Just ask your travel agent—if you can be flexible with your timing, your agent can find you cheap flights to South Africa. American citizens do not need a visa or even an international driver’s license to drive there. The more you read up on the country’s official travel website, the more you will be biting at the bit to go. Here’s a taste of why: Let’s start with the Big Five, which refers to the African lion, African elephant, African leopard, Cape buffalo, and black rhino. There is actually a Big Seven when you add water, to include the great white shark and southern right whale. South Africa is definitely one of the best destinations in the world if you want to see wildlife (in its natural habitat, that is). Along with the diversity of animals, you have several choices in how you want to see things. Visitors generally fly into Johannesburg or Cape Town airports. Plan to stay in the city and explore for a few days before moving on. Yes, you can drink the water; yes, it is as safe as any large city you may have visited. You can easily rent a car from well-known international companies—just remember to stay to your left on

the road! Since the flight to South Africa will take about 15 hours or more, plan to stay at least two weeks, if you can, to get the most out of your trip. In Cape Town, you can see Table Mountain (one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the most photographed place in South Africa) and the Cape Whale Route, which is perfect for whale-watching from land. Johannesburg has a great food scene and gorgeous botanical gardens; it’s the perfect place to set off on a train journey. Kruger National Park is one of the most famous parks in which to go on safari. Among the Big Five, there are thousands of animals. You are also likely to see giraffes, hundreds of species of birds, big cats, antelope, hippos, and crocodiles. In regard to safaris, you have so many options to choose from: walking, ›››

mountain-biking, driving, riding on an elephant, or flying in a hot air balloon. Take your pick or do them all! The traditional 4x4 rides work just fine, especially when you end up getting a little too close for comfort to one of these wild animals—your driver can speed you away. I recommend at least a walking safari and a traditional driving one. Prices for safaris depend on the level of luxury you are looking for. While you can be very comfortable in a tent setting, there are also luxury camping settings and lodges as options. When should you go? Any time will be a blast, but keep in mind that the seasons in the southern hemisphere are opposite to those of us up north, so South Africa’s summers are during our winters, and vice versa. If you want to go on a safari based on temperatures, opt for their winter, when the weather is the most pleasant. If you want to see more wildlife, go in late winter. Because the vegetation is sparse, you will catch animals drinking at the waterholes. Cape Town is best in the spring or fall, when the flowers are blooming and the vineyards start to change colors. Whale-watching is at its best off the Cape coast. One of the best places in the world for this is the town of Hermanus, and the best time is from late winter through early summer. You can even try paragliding off the cliffs to see the whales! From mid-May to mid-July, catch South Africa’s famous sardine run along the KwaZulu Natal coastline from the Cape to the east coast. These sardine schools are usually 15 kilometers long, 4 kilometers wide, and 40 meters deep! The birds are dive-bombing from the air above, while the dolphins and sharks are moving the sardines into “bait balls” underneath the water. This is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime chances to see an amazing and exciting natural phenomenon, either in a boat or underwater with a camera. South Africa has so much to offer visitors! It’s affordable, has amazing natural beauty, is full of adventure, and features all that wildlife. After a safari experience there, you will definitely be looking for flights to return. Sedona Soul Adventures Transform Your Life or Your Relationship By Angella A. Arndt
Do you wonder about your life’s purpose? Do you feel unfulfilled, even after achieving success? Are you in a relationship that needs help? Do you give too much, while ignoring your own needs? Many people experience these things and want to make a change but aren’t sure how to make it happen. It’s common to emphasize maintaining physical health through activities such as diet and exercise while overlooking the importance of emotional and spiritual health. Though physical health is indeed important, spiritual development plays an integral role in connecting with your inner voice and reaching your full potential. A spiritual retreat reconnects you with your heart and soul, allowing you to live a more connected and joyous life. Sedona Soul Adventures in Sedona, Arizona, was founded in 2002 and specializes in spiritual retreat experiences for individuals and couples. Founder Debra Stangl was a successful divorce attorney in Omaha who felt burned out after 20 years in the practice and wanted a deeper meaning in her life. She needed a break! She went to Sedona for “three days of peace and quiet” and instead experienced a life-changing event—she met with a healing practitioner and received the message, “You must leave your law practice now.” She returned to Omaha and, heeding the message, spent six months closing her law practice. She visited Sedona several times over the next three years, attending workshops and continuing her sessions with amazing practitioners. In 2001, she received another message during a session: “Move to Sedona.” She asked why, but the only response was, “Just go.” She heeded the message and moved, still unsure of her next step. Several months later, she realized that her visits to Sedona and healing sessions were preparing her to offer spiritual retreat experiences to others. She felt that the individual sessions she had had with practitioners provided her with more impactful experiences than the group workshops, so that’s how she decided to proceed with her own personalized retreats. “There is no one else in the world doing what we do,” Debra says. “We help people deal with the deepest things that are keeping them from living their best lives. Pretty much everyone who comes to us has a life-changing experience.” Group retreats offer one program for everyone, which may or may not meet your specific needs. Sedona Soul Adventures, on the other hand, provides a customized, individualized approach. Before you even arrive in Sedona, you will speak with an Angel Guide, who will talk to you about what’s going on in your life or your relationship and what you’d like to change or improve.Your retreat is customdesigned with sessions based on your specific needs. Sedona Soul Adventures works with dozens of talented practitioners from all around the world. chic and intuitive readings, vortex hikes, couples communication, and energy healing and clearing. Plan to spend three to five full days with Sedona Soul Adventures to maximize your experience. Debra says” The most important part of us is that people are taking this home with them, transforming their lives and their relationships. I find it interesting that I spent 20 years divorcing people and now I have spent over 17 years helping them stay together! You will generally have three to five hours of sessions each day, with time to meditate, connect with energy, and experience the outdoors. Each retreat ends with an Intuitive Integration session. This session creates your “at home” plan to ensure that you are integrating what you’ve learned at your retreat into your daily life. Sedona Soul Adventures focuses on the healing process and spiritual work. There is no central retreat facility. Practitioners work out of their home offices and private healing spaces, which enables them to provide the most meaningful spiritual experiences.Your Angel Guide is happy to make lodging recommendations for you. Debra advises individuals and couples looking for a spiritual retreat to do some research on the places they are considering. “How do you feel when you’re talking to the person you’re talking to? How is the retreat structured? Ask for testimonials. Ask to speak to clients.” Her client philosophy is simple. “You can have the life or relationship you want—I know it!” she asserts. “Real, lasting change is possible, and it can bring you into lasting happiness.” Sedona Soul Adventures focuses on spiritual healing and expansion, but their approach is very grounded and provides practical, real-world answers to achieving a fantastic life and satisfying relationships. Debra feels so blessed to be able to make a difference in people’s lives. “Our slogan is ‘Transforming One Soul at a Time,’ and that’s what we’re doing,” she shares. Debra spends her days managing the business, writing, and working on weekly SoulAdventuresTV videos for YouTube. Good Fences Make Good Gardens Around the Garden Gate
By Sharon Knierim
Garden fences are great for establishing borders, but they have other uses, as well. Beyond their ability to separate certain areas from others, fences can be used as a support system for top-heavy plants or as a vertical base on which climbing plants can grow upright. In fact, if you do not want an existing fence to become a permanently covered structure, invest a bit of cash and time to add a wooden trellis in front of that fence, leaving at least some of the fence visible. That way, your climbing plants can take over the trellis, and they just might leave your fence alone. Many garden fences are hard at work keeping children and pets in the yard (or out of the garden). They also let visitors understand where to enter the garden space, as they naturally direct human traffic. When a well-planned fence is complementary to the look and feel of a garden, it can be a real showstopper. For this reason, it is important to maintain fences so that they remain sturdy, useful, and attractive. If your garden is not already embraced by a fence, consider adding one. Of course, like every aspect of gardening, there is homework to do before you begin. Fencing materials can range from pretty and delicate to plain and practical, and the best choice depends on the look of your garden and the purpose of the fence.
Drive around a few neighborhoods and observe fences that are already in use. You will be amazed at the many styles and will also note that some fences seem barely noticeable. These are the fences that have been artfully planned and fit beautifully into their landscapes. By comparing different fences, you will be figuring out what you want your garden fence to look like and how to get there. What already exists in my space? What other changes will be needed? Will a fence require more changes than I am willing to make? We have all witnessed a wide variety of garden styles, and the same is true regarding fence designs. Take a tour of your garden before deciding how you want it to look. Compare the different types of fencing materials. A wide range of materials, styles, and possibilities are available.

Formal gardens are well-suited to metal fencing. For example, wrought iron is a classic fencing material for gardens that make strong suggestions about proper and suitable plants and hardscape. After all, in this type of garden, the fencing absolutely must reflect dignity and formality. The pickets of classic wrought iron fencing offer well-spaced vertical bars that are slender enough not to impede the view from outside the fence. Although installation of wrought iron fencing may be expensive, wrought iron is heavy duty and lasts a long time. Iron does rust in the environment, so consider that you will need to repaint from time to time. If you can afford it, wrought iron is a good metal fencing choice. If wrought iron is outside your budget, consider a kit comprised of steel, aluminum, and composite materials. These kits are offered in a variety of colors. To protect the fence from rust damage, be certain the material is powder-coated. If this coating is not used, it may be necessary to both scrub and paint the fence every three or four years. Many of us prefer wooden fencing to surround and add beauty to our more casual gardens. It’s an all-American choice to select picket fencing. Wood offers a friendly and inviting welcome to any visitors, and it will age gracefully, if it is properly cared for. Wooden fences can be made of readymade panels or individual pickets. Either way, a wooden fence will require a coat of paint or a good water sealant every few seasons. Spend a little extra on specially treated wood screws (made especially for outdoor use) to avoid rust stains from ruining the fresh appearance and to keep the joints from becoming weak. Of course, the lookalike alternative for wood is plastic fencing, and it has become a wonderful substitute. Composite plastic fencing has improved a lot over the years. It is both durable and attractive, while requiring little maintenance. Plan today to add a fence or update the current fence defining your garden. You may be surprised by how a simple thing like a fence can add both beauty and utility to any garden. Cuddly Critters
Pet Anxiety It’s More Common Than You Think By Brie Christensen
Just like humans, animals often experience forms of anxiety. In fact, any pet can be affected by anxiety, depending on the animal’s individual life experiences and fears. Though anxiety in pets can be unpleasant, the good news is that there are steps pet owners can take to prevent and treat it. The first thing to do is learn the signs and causes of anxiety in pets. Once you know that your pet is feeling anxious and why, you can move ahead with prevention and treatment options. According to the American Kennel Club, anxiety in dogs can be caused by things like meeting new people or animals, being startled by loud noises, or returning to an environment that was previously troublesome. Walking on certain surfaces can trigger anxiety in some dogs. Separation anxiety is another common issue. This simply means that your furry friend feels uncomfortable when you’re not around. When you two must be separated, your pet may have difficulty staying calm. Some types of anxiety in pets are based more on genetics than personality or life experience. Age can be a factor if your older pet starts experiencing cognitive dysfunction syndrome (this is similar to the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease in humans). Certain breeds are also known to be more susceptible to anxiety, including border collies, German shepherds, bishons frises, and Labrador retrievers. To determine whether or not your dog is experiencing anxiety, look for signs like unusual aggression, urinating or defecating in the house, excessive drooling and panting, or destructive behavior. Excessive barking, pacing, and repetitive or compulsive behavior (like licking or scratching) may also be cause for concern. It’s important to take note of these types of behaviors when you first see them; your dog’s anxiety may worsen if not addressed. When it comes to treatment, it’s best to consult with your dog’s veterinarian to identify the type and causes of your dog’s anxiety. Your vet can help you understand whether your dog is experiencing situational or ongoing anxiety; the vet can also rule out medical problems that could be contributing to unusual behavior. Your vet can guide you to an appropriate treatment plan, which usually combines training, preventive tactics, and, possibly, medication. Counter-conditioning is one form of training that can help your dog deal with anxiety by changing your dog’s response to the source of the anxiety. You might also consider desensitization training, which slowly introduces your dog to the source of anxiety, preferably in small increments. Through repeated exposure and the rewarding of positive behavior, owners can see tremendous changes in their dogs. If you’re not sure which training course is best for your dog, it’s always a good call to check in with a professional dog trainer who can advise you. SSRIs and antidepressants like fluoxetine and
70
July 2019
clomipramine are occasionally prescribed for dogs with anxiety. For more predictable anxiety-producing events, such as fireworks displays, a veterinarian might prescribe benzodiazepine. There are some things that pet parents can do to help prevent a dog’s anxiety. Try to maintain calm body language when your dog is exhibiting anxious behavior. Proper socialization with people and other animals can help teach your dog how to stay calm when meeting strangers. Healthy diet and sufficient exercise are also beneficial. Cat anxiety is just as prevalent as dog anxiety and may be caused by pain, illness, or exposure to toxins or diseases that affect the nervous system. On the other hand, the root of the problem may be a psychological trigger, such as a traumatic experience, lack of proper socialization, or even abuse or neglect. Like dogs, cats can see an increase in anxiety as they age. Signs of anxiety in cats might include trembling, hiding, less activity, attempting to escape, destructive or aggressive behavior, diarrhea, failure to use the litter box, and sores and lesions from over-grooming. Other symptoms could include loss of appetite, weight loss, excessive vocalization, lethargy, or restlessness. Cat owners should seek advice from a veterinarian to determine whether there are any underlying medical concerns. Vets might recommend anti-anxiety medication to help keep your kitty calm and might even recommend a trainer or animal behaviorist who can help both owner and cat through behavioral conditioning and counterconditioning. Regardless of how the anxiety originated, professionals say that treating it is always in the best interest of both pet and pet owner. If your pet seems unusually scared, anxious, or upset, know that you can seek guidance from trusted experts who can help your animal feel at ease. Positive Perspective
Change, Joy, Growth Embrace It “Change comes from reflection.” —Genesis P-Orridge I remember, back in the day, hating change. I liked my life just the way it was, thank you very much! I had developed a routine that I felt worked for me. I fought for the predictability of my life. Without even realizing it, I had stopped growing. I had stopped learning. This went on for many, many years. “Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation...even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.” —Leonardo da Vinci Getting stuck in our lives happens to a lot of us. We get married, start a career, have kids, take care of family. Before we know what has happened, after decades, we find ourselves so comfortable (or so used to being uncomfortable) that we fight change. If we are lucky, the Universe forces us to change. “If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living.” —Gail Sheehy A very smart person in my life once told me that we can choose to change, or we will be forced to change. When I first heard this, I thought to myself…I am happy. Why would I want to change? If people don’t

like the way I am, to heck with them. I like me just the way I am. I am not going to change! I guess it was the stubborn German in me? “You are always free to change your mind and choose a different future, or a different past.” —Richard Bach My life has changed. I have changed. Has it been easy? Absolutely not. Frankly, it’s been exhausting. My life today is 180 degrees from where I was 10 years ago. I look at life differently. I am a different person than I was. I see people who knew me “back in the day,” and sometimes they don’t recognize me. The overwhelming response, however, is that they say I look happy. Yes. Happy. “Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” —Dr. Seuss For years and years and years, I thought if I could just hold onto the happiness that I had found…years before…my life would be complete. Guess what? I was fooling myself. Staying in the same place, resisting change, was not a good thing in my life. Resisting growth is not a good thing. I had to go through that experience in order to learn…in order to grow. I now wake up every day with excited anticipation of what is coming next. Life is good. Change? Bring it on! WE
