Summer Vacations & Birthday Celebrations How are your summer memories shaping up? I hope that all of you have had some time to chill out, take a vacation, and do “a whole lot of nothin’!” This summer has been a hot one. I love it! I hear people complaining about the heat, and I think to myself, “This is Nebraska…remember 25 below with a wind chill of minus 40?” Bring out the margaritas! I love the heat. I love the sun. It’s as if I come alive! I rarely take a vacation in the summertime because, in my view, there is nothing to escape from. Wintertime? That’s a whole different subject. I do realize, though, that summertime is the big family vacation time. Erin, my Art and Editorial Director at the magazine, just returned from a Disney World vacation with her husband and daughter, along with her mother and aunt. They all drove down to Florida together. At almost 8 years old, her daughter is the perfect age for this kind of trip. Thinking about their road trip brought back all kinds of memories to me of road trips my family took when I was growing up. Back in the day, all eight Albrachts would pile into the station wagon and head down south to escape the terrible cold. I remember vividly a trip we took to Jacksonville, Florida, to visit my aunt and uncle. We drove for what seemed liked days, and we got into Jacksonville late at night. Our cousins, Joe and Joanie, woke us early the next morning to head to the beach and watch the sunrise. It was the first time any of us kids had seen the ocean, and what a sight it was—the sun coming up over the ocean. Unbelievable. I will never forget it. I think that’s when I realized that I was a water person. I love being around the ocean. Not that I get in it! I respect the ocean. I’m one of those visitors who sits on the beach, watches the waves come in, and goes out to walk along the sand. I hope that you have all had an opportunity to create some memories for you and your families. Summer is almost over! Before I sign off, I would like to say happy birthday to all of my August birthday buddies: my nephew, Dylan, 17, August 10th; August 21st; my son, Adam, 28, August 22nd; my granddaughter, McKenna, 7, August 23rd; and my nephew, Bo, 9, August 24th. Whew! Pretty crazy! That’s a lot of German chocolate cake to make. It’s my great-grandmother’s recipe, and it is fabulous!

Back-to-School Trends Confidence for a Successful School Year

By Holly Bell

School shopping—just hearing this phrase triggers all kinds of feelings in both parents and children! Start your kids on the right foot this fall by helping them find their LOOK! It’s important to help them feel confident…and nothing boosts confidence like feeling comfortable in your own clothes and looking great. Kids look at each new school year with excitement, and it all starts with that all-important fresh outfit for the first day of school. When picking that special outfit, make sure it flatters the body and will be comfortable all day. Skirts that are too short, tops that are too tight, or shoes that just aren’t comfortable are not going to be winners (and may well be against the school’s dress code). The combination of standard basic jeans or leggings with a graphic tee is always a go-to favorite. The graphic tee is a great way to show off some personality! Your child can make a statement with pixelated patterns, animals, beach themes, funny faces, and more. Teens are wearing their graphic tees tucked into the front of the jean with the back not tucked in. It’s a cute way to show off a cool belt buckle. Speaking of the graphic tee, you can’t get much more cute and comfortable than a t-shirt dress. Cool and easy to throw on when the morning is rushed, pair it with cute sneakers and a jean jacket, and you have a great back-to-school basic. This look is perfect for all ages, from toddlers to teens. Stripes are all the rage this year. Big stripes, little stripes, and everything in between—it’s a subtle way to have a little flair. Let your kids mix and match stripes with other graphics or patterns to express their own fashion sense. Let them ignite their creativity! Plaid is not going away anytime soon. You’ll find plaid for girls and boys, this laid-back pattern looks adorable on kids of all ages. Another favorite is the slip dress. This was a 1990s icon, but 2018 has reclaimed this look for its simplicity and versatility. Layered

with a plain white tee underneath as a jumper or worn with a tie-front shirt on top or any style jacket, the slip dress can be a go-to fave for tweens to teens. Dress it up or down with booties or sneakers. Throwing a cute sweater over the top can help the slip dress transition to the cooler days of fall. Athleisure is here to stay, and cute designs in track outfits will bring out your child’s sporty side. Popular fall styles will feature a waist-cropped top with a hoodie, along with slim-cut track pants. For the girly girl who loves dresses and skirts, a cool look is a high-low maxi dress. Worn with sneakers and a denim or boho jacket, this look can show off a feminine side with flair. School shopping should always include accessories! The most necessary item for fall is, of course, the backpack. Lugging books back and forth can be literally a pain, but when carried in a cute and trendy backpack, it is definitely less so. Like a graphic tee, a backpack is a great place to put some personality on display. For sporty girls, Nike has a cute paint-splattered backpack with the logo proudly displayed in a very stylistic way. How about a bold print embellished with pom-poms? An ongoing favorite is the Vera Bradley floral look. Stop and smell the roses or posies on this feminine bag. For a little glamour, pick a backpack embellished with gold zippers. Along with school clothing, shoes, and backpacks, don’t forget the latest hair trends. Braids have long been my favorite, and they’re still popular. French braids, side braids, braids twisted into a bun—you can’t go wrong with this look, and it stays neat all day long! Crazy colors are still around for girls who are looking for a little edge, but many of them are happy with just a few strands of color or a contrasting color underneath. Waves and more waves are still the rage, along with the “beachy” hair that has been a trend for a few years now. Super-short hair is on a comeback, too, for those with the hair and head shape that warrant the look. Before the alarm starts ringing each morning, it’s a good idea to set up a few routines to help the mornings go smoother. One great tip is to have your kids choose their outfits the night before. Have them set their clothes on a dresser or nightstand so they’re ready to go in the morning. There’s nothing worse than enduring a meltdown because someone can’t choose what to wear or waiting on a teenager who goes through 20 outfits before deciding on just the right one! Preparation is the key to happiness to getting out the door on time! The bell will be ringing soon! Don’t be late for a fresh new start. Set your kids up for school success this fall with confidence, comfort, and style. Happy shopping! WE For more information, visit www.teacollection.com

Grilled Lamb Kabobs Cut a 2-pound lamb loin into 1 1/2-inch cubes. Make a marinade by mixing 1 juiced and zested lemon, 1/2 cup of red wine, 1 minced onion, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 Tablespoon of chopped mint, 1 Tablespoon of chopped rosemary, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Mix well. Put the lamb chunks in the marinade, stir to coat, and refrigerate for 4–6 hours. Thread the lamb onto barbecue skewers (if skewers are bamboo, soak them first), alternating lamb chunks with cherry tomatoes and thick slices of porcini mushrooms, yellow or red peppers, and onion. Brush marinade over the skewers. Grill until lamb is cooked rare (or the way you like it).

ramen noodles. Cook until toasted, then cool. Mix everything when ready to serve. Add cooked chicken, if desired. Sautéed Baby Tomatoes In a medium skillet, melt 1 Tablespoon of butter. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed garlic and 1/3 cup of sliced almonds. Sauté for 3 minutes, until the almonds are golden. Remove from heat. Add cherry tomatoes and sauté over high heat for 1–3 minutes, until the tomatoes start bursting. Add 2 Tablespoons of fresh chopped basil and the almonds. Stir to coat.

Garden Succotash Put 2 cups of washed fresh lima beans and 2 cups of fresh corn kernels in a sauté pan. Add 1/4 cup of water, 2 Tablespoons of butter, and several slices of onion. Sauté for 5–8 minutes, until crisp-tender. Add several dashes of salt and pepper and 1/2 cup of cream. Cook on low another 5 minutes, until the cream is thickened.

Peach Salsa Cut 5 or 6 peaches in half, grill them lightly, and then peel and chop. (If you don’t have fresh peaches, drain and chop a can of peaches.) Lightly sauté 1/4 cup of red onion, a diced jalapeño, a dash of chili powder or cumin, and a bit of salt. Taste-test and adjust the spices. Add the mixture to the peaches, along with a squeeze of lime. Add cilantro, if desired. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or so. Serve with chips or chicken or fish.

Crunchy Cabbage Salad Rinse and shred a small Napa cabbage (or use a bag of prepared shredded cabbage). Place the cabbage in a serving bowl along with 3 diced green onions. Refrigerate until ready to assemble and serve. Mix together 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 3/4 cup of vegetable oil, and 1/2 cup of sugar. Heat until sugar is dissolved. When cooled, add 2 teaspoons of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Set aside until you are ready to dress the salad. Melt 1/3 cup of butter into a skillet, and add 1 cup of slivered almonds, 2 teaspoons of sesame seeds, and 1 package of broken-up

Summer Fruits Crisp Gather 4 1/2 cups of whatever fruits are ripe and ready: peaches, raspberries, rhubarb, pitted cherries. Toss the fruit with 1 cup of sugar. Mix together 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of rolled oats, 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg. Cut in 3 sticks of butter. Pat half of the crisp mixture onto the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan. Pour in the berries and add the rest of the crisp mix on top. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Serve warm (ice cream optional but highly recommended). WE

Be Your Best You Optima Medical Hormone Replacement & Aesthetic Center By Jackie Byers

Optima Medical Hormone Replacement & Aesthetic Center, located at 2608 South 158th Plaza, in Omaha, is a medical facility run by a medical professional. Joleen Lake is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who began her nursing career in 1992. She has spent the last 25 years supporting patients in many areas, including oncology, women’s health, and medical aesthetics. These days, she focuses on helping patients be their best selves through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. “I know the life-improving differences that the best kind of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has made for my clients,” Joleen declares. “Patients’ moods become brighter. Their debilitating fatigue becomes a thing of the past. Sex drive, which may have vanished with the hormone depletion, returns to normal again. An improved outlook and a sense of general well-being prevails. When we administer these hormones, positive changes provide a better quality of life for our clients.” Joleen explains what she means by “the best kind” of HRT. “Originally, HRT was welcomed as a great medical breakthrough. The hormones used were created from animal hormones. They were not identical to human hormones. Serious problems followed for some patients. The synthetic estrogen and progestin were discontinued early on.” “Unfortunately, all hormone replacement became suspect and even feared. Bioidentical hormones have not shown those dangerous side effects,” Joleen asserts. “They are plant-based and a match for human hormones. The right doses restore metabolic balance. The benefits make for a better life.” Studies show that, as we age, the endocrine system slows down, no longer producing enough of the hormones we need to function at our best. HRT with bioidentical hormones slows the approach of many of the scourges of aging, like weakening bones and increased risk of heart disease. While all of the body’s hormones are necessary for good health, one of the most misunderstood is testosterone. This hormone actually impacts the body’s immune system, libido, and muscle formation. It also enhances a general sense of well-being. Testosterone replacement therapy can improve quality of life for both women and men. Optima delivers testosterone as a pellet therapy. “Pellet therapy is a well-established treatment,” Joleen notes. “This therapy places a rice-sized grain of your exact dose under the skin. Everyone needs individually prescribed dosages; the pellet releases your tailor-made

The sooner we replace our missing hormones, the sooner we can find relief. Confusion exists about the differences between bioidentical hormones and those that are not bioidentical. One misunderstanding is the difference between progestin and progesterone (whether you’re spelling or pronouncing, it’s easy to see how you could mix them up). Both of these hormones have been used in HRT, but they have different chemical structures. “The media condemned hormone replacement generally, without explaining which hormones were the focus of the study,” Joleen says. If you are taking hormones prescribed by your physician, find out whether or not they are bioidentical, and then visit Optima to learn more about alternative ways to relieve your symptoms. During your visit to Optima, take time to check out the aesthetic offerings. When we look good, it helps us feel good, and the professionals at Optima can do wonders for your entire body. Kris has many ways to treat sags, wrinkles, and other problems. Her list of services includes injectables like Botox and fillers, skin care, hair removal, photorejuvenation, vitamin injections, and more. Of course, Optima also offers a great assortment of skin care products. Come in for a new client consultation, which is absolutely free. Find out what the professionals at Optima can help you improve. They will show you the costs you can expect before you begin your selected regimen, so there aren’t any unpleasant surprises on your bill. Optima Medical Hormone Replacement & Aesthetic Center is located at 2608 South 158 Plaza, in Omaha. Call 402-578-5353 to set up your free consultation. Joleen and Kris are happy to use their expertise to make you feel and look better! A Woman’s Work

Generations

Is There Really a Gap? By Sharon Knierim

Our immediate family is made up of three generations. Sometimes, we all find ourselves living under the same roof. The reasons for these periods of togetherness vary—there are instances of waiting for a new home to be available, as well as other bridges to cross, that bring us together spiritually, mentally, and physically. At one time, I asked my mother if she would like to come and live with us. “NO,” she replied. She reminded me that she had already lived with her children for 18 years each…and that was plenty. Of course, I took that pretty hard. In truth, I think she was speaking to the essence of her desire to enjoy her own independence. All in all, I believe that she chose correctly—she was as self-determined as I am, and it was probably best that we did live 30 miles apart. Mother was not a frail woman, and she may well have worn us all out. Now that I myself am the age that she was when I began my campaign to move her into our home, I often feel the same way. There are a few differences between our circumstances— for example, Mother and Dad raised five children, whereas my husband and I only raised two. Even to this day, I am glad to have the next generation live in their separate apartment.

REGIONAL LEADER IN ORAL SURGICAL CARE

As we were growing up, our widowed grandmother lived with us. She was very frail and very emotional. We children made her nervous, and she made us nervous, too. Sadly, there was no communication to soothe us or help us accept each other. Of course, anyone who has lived with multiple generations under one roof recognizes that there will be moments that are less than sterling and that little hissy fits can break out at any time. Generally, however, I find it an appealing way to live. I typically feel sorry for people who live with me because I am sure that I am always right and that everyone should do just as I say at all times. However, here is where the gift is: My cohabitants

have always been and remain pretty clever at educating me and showing me that, more often than not, there are at least two sides to a story and more than one way to consider any situation—that not everything is black and white. I know they’re right, and I appreciate what they have done for me as they work diligently at keeping my mind broadened. We may be from different generations, but we seem to share the same core values. In fact, it’s become a favorite pastime for us to participate in casual debate. We don’t solve the problems of the world, but we do all gain new insights into how to approach and deal with those problems. Throughout history, there have always been misunderstandings and lack of trust between generations. It is probably just part of living. As we grow up, it is natural for us to doubt our parents and teachers. We question authority. When we are young, we want more than anything to be individuals and to form our own ideas. In the end, everything usually falls into place. We’ve all heard the term “generation gap,” but why does it really exist and why does it persist? I believe it is human-made and human-sustained. Like so many human endeavors, it is unnecessary and totally useless. Why not spend all the time and effort put forth to promote this gap toward a better end? Understanding other people, especially those closest to us, is one of life’s most wonderful gifts. Understanding others makes thinking and decision-making much easier and more profound, and it helps us understand ourselves. Finding common ground is a process that does not often happen overnight. It takes work, dedication, and honesty, but the product of understanding each other’s values systems and eliminating gaps in communication is what brings us closer together. We won’t always agree, but making an effort to understand another person’s perspective really has no downsides. If you decide to close the generation gap, you might have to do what I was forced to do—give up always wanting to be the person in the right. Nobody is right all the time. Who would want to be? Understanding is a two-way street, and you can’t truly travel that street by yourself. Luckily, it’s much more fun to travel with someone else. Author’s Note: Research for this article was derived from four generations of adults ranging from 18 to 85 years of age. I would like to thank all parties who shared their candor and personal insights. WE

Vantage Point

Stitches In Time

Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha

By Loretta McCollum

Businesses that stand the test of time often have many things in common, no matter what they sell. They embrace change without being trendy. They create brand awareness and offer only quality products, backed up by impeccable customer service. They focus on what they do best, without trying to be everything to everyone. They know their customers and are intuitive to their needs. Honesty, integrity, and hard work are their maxims. They are deeply rooted in the local community, and they pride themselves on giving back to that community. Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha is one of these businesses, going strong since 1976. Tucked away in a Maple Village strip mall, Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha is the only authorized Bernina dealer in town. Owners Keff and Abigail Wilson purchased the business nearly four years ago, and they continue to provide the excellent customer service and attention to detail that has allowed the business to thrive and grow. In 2015, the store was the number one dealer in the district and was ranked fifth in the nation for new machine sales at a single location. The Bernina brand celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, and Keff is more than happy to talk about the Bernina difference. “Many people don’t realize that the company started in Switzerland, and that famous Swiss precision engineering is built into the machines, accounting for their durability,” he explains. “Also, Bernina is a family-owned business for four generations.” Both Keff and Abigail acknowledge the importance of customer service and standing behind the products they sell…and they’re delighted to stand behind the Bernina brand. These aren’t your grandmother’s sewing machines (though your grandmother may well have had a Bernina, too). Today’s models use LED screens and computerized technology. There are embroidery machines, self-threading machines, quilting machines, and sergers, to name a few. Prior to purchasing, customers have the opportunity to sit down and actually use the many types of machines that the store carries. In addition, new machine purchases come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, one year of free service, and a class on how to use the machine. “We try to get everyone off on the right foot,” Keff jokes, referring of course to the presser foot (the mechanism that holds the fabric down as it’s fed under the needle). All machine purchases come with a same-day 20 percent discount on notions and 10 percent off a sewing cabinet purchase. Trade-ins are welcome, too.

18

August 2018

Within one year of purchase, customers receive full credit for the original machine’s purchase price to apply toward a machine upgrade. The store sells an assortment of notions, as well as an unparalleled thread selection, but they don’t sell fabric. Their focus is on machine sales and service as well as a variety of sewing classes. Three full-time, certified, and trained service technicians staff the inhouse repair shop. Many of their regular customers have shopped there for decades, and customers from Missouri to Maine return to the shop on a regular basis. “They tell us that no one services their machines like we do,” Keff and Abigail say. One customer notes that her favorite repair tech “services machines like he would service his wife’s machine.” The store offers a diverse class selection, including courses for beginners to the most experienced. Projectspecific classes, embroidery classes, and children’s sessions are offered. In addition, four sewing clubs meet regularly at the store. The Bernina Club covers the wide variety of Bernina accessories and presser feet, with each session focusing on a different sewing technique. The Embroidery Club provides an opportunity to learn and share the latest embroidery techniques. The Software Club helps participants create their own designs, and the DesignWorks Club covers the DesignWorks suite, including CutWork, PaintWork, and CrystalWork. This all-encompassing program allows users to perform appliqué functions, apply rhinestones, and even utilize fabric paint to create unique designs. A successful business gives back to the community, and Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha is no exception. Abigail’s parents were missionaries. She spent her early years in Taiwan, moving to the United States as a teen. The business carries on that giving spirit by providing resources to both national and local non-profits, including Angels Among Us, Wounded Warriors, and Operation Smile, just to name a few. Keff and Abigail’s business philosophy is to “treat people like you want to be treated, and the rest will follow.” If you love to sew or would like to learn, you owe it to yourself to visit Bernina Sewing Center of Omaha at 10144 Maple Street, in Omaha. Fresh Concept

Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy What You Need to Know if Unexpected Circumstances Arise By Kylie Gumpert

Americans have a lot of debt—over $13 billion last year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York—and experts predict that American debt will continue to climb. When unexpected financial circumstances arise, a household’s budget can change dramatically, and debt can become a crushing burden. Such circumstances could include job loss, divorce, storm damage to the home, medical bills, out-of-control spending, or a combination of these. If you’re working night and day to keep afloat and you’re still coming up short, filing for bankruptcy might be the best option for regaining your life. Bankruptcy is an option that people can take to relieve them of debt that they have no ability to pay back or that they need more time to pay back. (Businesses can also file for bankruptcy, though the vast majority of bankruptcy filings in the United States are made by individuals.) Of course, bankruptcy is no miracle cure. It can also have long-lasting negative effects, such as making it difficult to find employment and rebuild your credit—you may even be required to sell off certain possessions. There are also certain debts that bankruptcy cannot erase. These include student loans, child support, debts owed through criminal acts such as fraud, government fines, and secured debts (debts that can be traced back to an individual item such as jewelry or a mortgage). Before deciding to file for bankruptcy, you should first know which types of bankruptcy you can file, as well as whether a different debt management plan would work for your financial situation. Managing overwhelming debt involves sorting out what’s owed and working with a credit counselor to get lower interest rates and payments. Settling debt involves working with a settlement company who makes a settlement offer to creditors. Consolidating debt involves bundling multiple loans into one with a lower interest rate, making it easier to pay off. Filing for bankruptcy should always be a last resort. To start the process, locate a nonprofit credit counseling agency that is accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. This step is legally required by the Federal Trade Commission if you are considering filing for bankruptcy, as you will need to take a pre-bankruptcy counseling session as well as a post-filing debtor education course that might be in person, over the phone, or online. These information sessions and credit counselors will help you determine which path is most appropriate, explain the pros and cons of each, and help you analyze your spending and build budgeting systems to ensure that you never have to consider bankruptcy again. There are two bankruptcy options for individual debtors: chapter 7 and chapter 13. Let’s walk through an example of each option. In 2008, Dave had a steady job as a banker. When

20

August 2018

the housing and financial crisis hit, his position was eliminated during company cutbacks. Jobs were scarce, and Dave had to take a position that paid significantly less than his previous one. After a while, the credit card debt he accumulated during his higher-paid days becomes overwhelming. He downsizes but still isn’t able to get all his bills paid on time. Creditors start calling him at work and talking about garnishing his wages. Dave decides to file for chapter 7, also known as a straight bankruptcy. In this type of bankruptcy, all of Dave’s non-exempt assets, if he has any, will be sold to pay off as much debt as possible. After that, all of his remaining debt will be cleared. The qualifications for exempt and non-exempt assets vary from state to state, but common examples of non-exempt assets include cash, bank accounts, stocks, collections, second homes, and second vehicles. In most cases, a trustee, who will manage the debtor’s assets throughout the bankruptcy process, determines that the debtor does not have any assets worth selling off. Still, there is always the chance that Dave will lose some of his property in a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Cheryl lives in a middle class neighborhood and works as an executive at a marketing agency. One day, she falls while doing work around her house, and she wakes up in a hospital bed. She’s had an aneurysm and will need to remain in the hospital for at least a couple of weeks. There are complications, and she learns she may not be able to return to work for a year. Her sick leave is used up, and her insurance won’t cover the time she still needs to rehabilitate. Medical bills stack up alongside her mortgage payments. Because she has no income, she can no longer afford her house payment. To avoid foreclosure, she works with a lawyer to file chapter 13 bankruptcy, through which she will receive

www.womensedition.com

an extension to pay off her debt under a payment plan. This option is best for debtors like Cheryl who have the ability to pay off their debts but not within the time frame that is required by credit or loan agencies. Still, many individuals who file for this type of bankruptcy do not reach their payment plan goals and later end up filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 bankruptcies, unlike chapter 7, place a cap on how large an individual’s debt can be. Last year, almost 490,000 individuals in the United States filed under chapter 7, while around 300,000 filed chapter 13. Filing for bankruptcy, however, is not a simple process. While not required, most debtors will benefit from hiring a bankruptcy lawyer who can consult on the case. A lawyer can also help fill out the paperwork—and there’s a lot of it. Bankruptcy lawyers should be certified and should belong to the National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys. To file for bankruptcy, both Dave and Cheryl will need to prove that they have taken a federally-approved pre-bankruptcy counseling session within the last 180 days. They will need to file documents showing their assets and liabilities, current income, expenditures, and unexpired leases, as well as financial statements and tax records. They will also need to compile a list of all the debts they owe, including the amounts and who they are owed to, as well as a list of their property and their monthly expenses. On top of that, there are the fees—currently, it costs $245 to file a chapter 7 and $235 to file a chapter 13, plus a $75 administrative fee. A chapter 7 filing also requires a $15 trustee charge, and Dave will need to file a list of exempt assets. After filing, the court will inform creditors of the petitions for bankruptcy, and a meeting is set for 21 to 50 days later.

During this meeting, creditors and an appointed trustee will ask Dave and Cheryl questions about their circumstances and their debts owed and will sort out any discrepancies. After Dave’s meeting for chapter 7, the trustee will determine if his exempt asset list is acceptable or whether he has any assets worth liquidating. The trustee may also determine that Dave’s case should have been filed as a chapter 13. As long as creditors agree with the case and do not file a suit arguing that their debt should not be eliminated through bankruptcy, the process of erasing Dave’s debt from start to finish will be around six months. To finish filing chapter 13, Cheryl will need to work with a lawyer to file a repayment plan, either with her petition or up to two weeks after submitting it. The court will meet with creditors and schedule a hearing to decide how much she should pay, which could be anywhere from no payment to complete repayment. Once approved, Cheryl’s payments will be made to a trustee rather than directly to creditors. Late payments will not be permitted, and she should be debt-free in three to five years. Bankruptcies remain on credit reports for up to 10 years, which will make it difficult for Dave or Cheryl to get a loan or possibly even a job during that time. Still, when you consider how much they would have struggled had they not filed, bankruptcy was the best option for these debtors, despite the negatives that come with it. Having a clean slate is a chance that not everyone gets. It will be vital for them to maintain their finances and rebuild their savings to avoid being troubled by bankruptcy again. Drink More Water! At Cherish You Boutique, They Cherish You! By Marge Shoemaker

Donna Retherford, the owner of Cherish You Boutique, wants you to learn more about what you put into your body—especially the water you’re drinking. She has had kidney issues for many years. Because her condition required her to drink lots of water to flush impurities from her system, she decided to research the water she was drinking. “I started reading research on bottled water, local tap water, filtered water—every kind of water I could think of—to learn why the water I drank didn’t satisfy me,” she says. “Some of the things I read were frightening.” Then she read about the benefits of hydrogen-rich, alkaline water, which is produced from regular tap water through a process called electrolysis with a small in-home device called a water ionizer. Donna remembers trying a sample of Kangen Water at a health seminar and thinking that it tasted great. She bought a Kangen ionizer, tried it at home, and was sold. “I feel better now, after using the Kangen water, than I have for ages,” she reports. “It’s a lot easier now to drink the required eight glasses of water a day than it was a few years ago.” About three years ago, she became a distributor, and

she opened Kangen Water of Omaha one year ago. “The Enagic ionization system transforms regular tap water into pure, healthy, electrolyticreduced, and hydrogen-rich drinking water,” Donna explains. The machine, not much larger than a cable box, can be installed under the sink or left on the counter. Mike has known Donna for years. He read an article about her store and gave her a call. “I chose the under-the-sink model,” he tells us, “because I didn’t want to give up the space on my counter. They use a water supplier at work, and it just doesn’t compare with Kangen Water.” Donna and her clients rave about the benefits of

Healthy Living

Omaha Hypnosis Center Unique Approach to Lifestyle Change

By Janet L. Schmidt

Can the ancient practice of hypnosis help you change your modern life? Yes, it can, if you can find a qualified practitioner to lead the way. If you’re lucky enough to live in the Omaha area, you can find one at Omaha Hypnosis Center. Co-owners Jeff and Devan Martin got started in hypnosis to make a positive change in others’ lives. Years later, they have helped many grateful clients rid themselves of unwanted habits like smoking, overeating, and too much stress. If you’re skeptical about the idea of hypnosis as therapy, you’re not alone. Though hypnosis has been used as a method of healing for thousands of years, its concurrent role in the entertainment industry has led some people to take it less seriously as a treatment option. Thankfully, that misunderstanding is on its way out. Today, hypnosis is used in clinical practice by psychotherapists, in pain management clinics, and in programs to help people quit smoking, enhance their athletic performance, and manage stress.

Jeff and Devan define hypnosis as a “heightened state of awareness that allows hypnotic suggestion to speed up the learning process.” Devan expands on that definition by saying, “Hypnosis is a remarkable and beautiful way to get in touch with your body, mind, and heart, in order to focus on what is important to you.” Devan and Jeff are certified hypnotists through the National Guild of Hypnotists, which means they have received intensive training on the use of hypnosis. They also practice neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), which is the study and analysis of subjective experience. Devan is also a licensed life coach.

Good Looks

A Beautiful Smile Sinking Your Teeth Into Oral Surgery

By Loretta McCollum

“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you,” Louis Armstrong sang. He was right— a smile can instantly brighten a gloomy day or lighten a dark mood. Having a great smile means having healthy teeth and gums. If missing or crowded teeth are hampering your smile, dental implants or wisdom tooth removal may be the right choice for you. These procedures are known as oral surgery. There are many reasons for teeth to be missing—commonly, the problem is due to injury or decay. It’s also not uncommon to be born missing some of your permanent teeth. Missing teeth cause an obvious cosmetic concern, but they can also lead to serious oral health problems. Remaining teeth may shift in an attempt to fill the gap, making oral hygiene difficult and increasing the risk for decay and gum disease. Jaw function can be affected. When teeth are missing, the jaw may shrink, changing facial shape and, possibly, leading to more tooth loss. Dental implant surgery is a restorative procedure that preserves the existing jawbone and stimulates bone growth. Dental implants feel and function like natural teeth, and they can last for decades. They won’t slip or click, allowing patients to maintain their natural speech patterns. Adjacent teeth do not need to be ground down to anchor tooth replacements. Dental implants are growing in popularity—over three million people in the U.S. have at least one. The procedure typically involves surgically implanting a screw-

shaped titanium rod into the jawbone. Over the next few months, the jawbone grows around the implant, creating an artificial root that is not unlike a natural tooth root. When the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is placed on the implant, just above the gumline. Mouth impressions are taken, and artificial teeth (crowns) are created and attached to the abutments. The entire process takes up to a year. Routine checkups and cleaning are still required, but patients need not be concerned about avoiding certain foods. Variations exist for patients who may not have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant or who are missing multiple teeth. Bone augmentation, involving the use of bone grafts or growth factors, increases jawbone strength, helping to secure the implant. A subperiosteal implant is a good choice to cover a large area. In this method, a metal framework is attached under the gumline, just above ›››

the jawbone. Replacement teeth will be anchored to metal posts protruding from the framework. Implants are not routinely covered by dental insurance, but more companies are rethinking coverage. In some cases, health insurance may cover a portion of the cost, and many practices offer financing options. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to develop, typically making their appearance sometime between our late teens and early 20s. It’s believed that wisdom teeth were used by our ancestors to aid in chewing raw meats, roots, and nuts. With today’s softer, more refined diet, these teeth are no longer needed for survival and are notorious for causing problems, which is why 85 percent of the population has them removed. Most of the time, there is just no room for them. They crowd our other teeth, making it difficult to clean around them, which increases the risk for tooth decay. They often come in misaligned, damaging the adjacent teeth and causing jawbone or nerve damage. They may be impacted, meaning that they only partially break through the gums, leaving an opening for bacteria to enter, causing infection, pain, and swelling. Early removal is recommended, before the roots can become fully developed. If the tooth is fully erupted through the gum, removal can be as simple as any other tooth extraction. If the tooth is impacted, an incision needs to be made into the gum, and the tooth may need to be removed in sections. Recovery depends on the difficulty of the extraction. Bleeding may occur for several hours after removal. Packing the empty socket with gauze is standard procedure. It’s important to avoid spitting or sucking (including smoking), as these activities can dislodge the blood clot, causing dry socket to develop. This is a painful condition that requires treatment with medication. Facial swelling and bruising may also occur, particularly if the tooth was impacted. Your oral surgeon will likely recommend that you take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain, eat a soft diet for a few days, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If oral surgery is in your future, consult the experts. Periodontists, prosthodontists, and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in implants and tooth extraction. Ask your regular dentist for a referral. Proper oral care will keep you flashing those pearly whites for years to come. Go Ahead, Take a Shot Listen to Your Inner Being “One hundred percent of the shots you don’t take don’t go in.” —Wayne Gretzky Making a decision to “take our shot” requires a certain sense of courage. We may look at our current life situation and see that we have more than most people on the planet do. Is it even fair that we still want more? Yes, we have an idea, but is it worth the risk? “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt

By Janet Van deWalle

So, how do we know it’s the right thing to do? What if that little voice was right—and we just argued it to death? The best advice I’ve ever received on making these kinds of decisions came from my mother. She once said, “Feel your way through—listen to your gut. “ Now, growing up, like most of us, I’d been told by many of my elders to get my heart out of big decisions, and use my head. I was told to look at the “pros and cons”and analyze them until the “logical” decision became apparent. My mother, on the other hand, gave me permission to listen to my Inner Being. Thanks Mom! “The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”—Eden Phillpotts

When we are contemplating taking out shot, what a lot of us experience is that annoying little voice in our heads that pops up and starts saying things like: “It will never work…you can’t succeed…what makes you think you’re worthy of all that?” Most of the time that is when we decide to shelve our dreams. Taking our shot is a decision that each of us has to make on our own. Only we can work through the demons. Yes, we can discuss it with our spouse, family, friends, coworkers, but, when all is said and done, it comes down to us.

When we finally allow ourselves to listen to our Inner Being we will KNOW that we have chosen the right path. All the doubts will be gone, and the “little voice” will forever be silenced on this topic. We will be able to take our shot with the confidence that we will make it. We will know that no matter how many shots it takes, we will make it our reality.

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too, can become great.” —Mark Twain

“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however.” —Richard Bach

Digging into Family History Unfurling Leaves on the Family Tree Have you looked into your family history? I have always known more about my mother’s side of the family than my father’s. For my birthday, my kids gave me a DNA kit designed to determine ancestry. These genetic results were not surprising, considering what I know of my ancestors. Mom’s cousin traced the family origins to Luxembourg and created a family tree dating back to 1872. His research passed through various cousins and eventually landed with me. I now have many projects, including going through and labeling family pictures and compiling a narrative family history. A lot of the work has been done. Fortunately, I shared hours with Mom and her siblings, telling family stories and going through old photographs. My kids have shown an interest in finding out more about their ancestors. They know most of Mom’s siblings and many of my first cousins through regularly held family reunions. This project will be a labor of love. We know less of Dad’s family. We seldom met with his parents, his sisters, and their families during our growing-up years. These gatherings were shorter and less informative than those with Mom’s family. Fewer stories were told. The treasure trove of photographs was less evident. I’ve lost touch with the cousins on that side of the family. My kids have only had the opportunity to meet that side of the family a few times. One of the benefits of submitting to the DNA research is the

possibility of finding long-lost relatives. On getting my genetic results, I made some brief entries with the information I knew to be true about Dad’s family—mostly names and some birth places, with very few birth dates or other specific information. I wasn’t too sure what results my sketchy information would bring. Surprisingly, I heard from a third cousin from Dad’s side of the family. His initial email mentioned that we were related through my grandfather. (His mother and my father were second cousins.) His grandmother’s name was familiar from letters Mom had kept over the years. Now I can add to Dad’s side of our family history! I wish I knew more about my husband’s family. I know some names and relationships. I do know some of his first cousins who might help…at least with his mom’s side of the family. His dad’s side has more blanks and fewer resources. Research will help the family tree grow. Why am I sharing this experience with you? My kids have often commented that they wish they knew more about the other family relatives. A window has been opened. I hope to fill in some blanks for the kids. We’ll look at pictures, read letters, and share. Have your kids shown an interest? What do you know about your family ancestry? The time to start researching is when older relatives are still around. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The Beauty of Choice Custom Furniture By Robyn V. Powell

If you’ve shopped in chain stores for furniture, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of finding something that was almost perfect. Perhaps it wasn’t quite the right size or color, or maybe the quality just wasn’t what you hoped. Most of us have become so accustomed to buying furniture from stores and online that we often overlook the option of custom pieces. It may be time to rethink the way we buy furnishings. Why settle when you have the option to bring something truly exciting into your home? Custom furniture brings a surprising number of benefits that mass-produced furniture simply can’t offer. Many people equate commissioning custom furniture with expensive price points and long wait times. It’s true that the initial outlay and time frame may be somewhat higher and longer than for ready-made items, but when you compare all the pros and cons, the scales tip favorably in the direction of custom options. One of the most obvious benefits is not having to compromise on things like quality or style. The knowledge that your furniture is durable and has been crafted with care from quality materials gives you confidence that you’ve made a sound investment. Choosing every design element, from wood species to the number of shelves or drawers to the small details like hardware, gives you the creative freedom to express your individuality and make a personal statement. Custom furniture provides flexible solutions for irregularly shaped rooms or challenging spaces. An efficient and beautiful way

to utilize space in your home is to introduce custom built-ins. Astute homeowners are keenly aware of the increased home equity that results from choosing quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. The same principle applies to built-in components such as entertainment centers, libraries, and home offices. Lack of storage space is an issue faced by many homeowners. Well-designed built-ins can maximize storage space, can be tailormade to fit any space, and can add dimension and personality to any room. Popular built-in ideas include a custom desk with useful storage for files and home office equipment; closets that attractively showcase clothing, accessories, and jewelry; and organized mudrooms with designated places for backpacks, sports equipment, and even your pet’s feeding station. Custom solutions bring style and functionality while optimizing your space. A built-in upholstered banquette can transform an ›››

awkward, cramped dining space into a comfortable and attractive breakfast nook. Tapping into unused vertical space by adding a Murphy bed will add versatility to your home office or den. Simply pull the bed down from the wall when your guests are ready to retire for the night. In the morning, the bed easily folds up and disappears, leaving floor space and seamlessly transitioning the room. Upholstered furnishings are also available in semi-custom selections, offering a middle ground for shoppers who desire a quicker turnaround time—typically, four to six weeks. Choose from available frame options and make it your own by selecting the fabric, size, and filling material. Customizing sofas, chairs, and beds allows you to design around your personal style and comfort needs. Lighting is another great opportunity to bring some personality to a room. A custom lampshade in just the right fabric and size can be the perfect finishing touch to a well-appointed room. If you’re a business owner, custom furnishings for the office allow you to design your space to reflect your brand. How you decorate your office sets the tone for how employees and clients perceive your business. A conference table topped with a polished mahogany slab, for instance, lends a significantly different feel to the room than a table made out of reclaimed barn doors. Custom furniture is a great way to let your clients know what kind of business you’re running. Investing in custom furnishings means your pieces will continue to appreciate over time, unlike mass-produced items that begin to depreciate the moment they are loaded onto a truck for delivery to your home. Furniture makers in your local community are skilled crafts people who can create any conceivable style and are equipped to use concepts, techniques, and materials you won’t find from a large manufacturer. Interior decorators, designers, and even custom home builders can often make great referrals for custom furniture makers— just ask them who they’ve enjoyed working with in the past. By working with experienced professionals, you will have the comfort of knowing where, when, and how your furniture was made. The excitement of commissioning a piece of custom furniture is rivaled by very few other purchases, delivering long-lasting pleasure to you, your family, and guests in your home. Are You Prepared for the Unexpected? Ask the Experts at Chastain-Otis By Marge Shoemaker

Jolene Schaa (pronounced “Shaw”) is the office manager and partner at Chastain-Otis Insurance and Financial Services. Her goal, and the goal of every staff member at Chastain-Otis, is to make sure that we’re protected—that we have the insurance coverage we need to keep our assets safe not just from fire or hail but from liability, as well. Chastain-Otis has been in the Omaha area since Dick Chastain started the Chastain Agency in 1953. Dave Chastain joined his father in 1972. Dave’s son, Sean, became the third generation of Chastain insurance agents in 1998. Chastain merged with Otis Insurance in 1994. Today, the owners of the company are Sean Chastain, Dustin Kowalewski and Jolene. Jolene also has a long history of working in the insurance industry. After receiving her college degree in banking and finance, she accepted a position in an independent insurance agency in northwest Iowa. Jolene joined that firm, serving as a licensed customer service agent for farm, commercial, and personal insurance. She joined Chastain-Otis in 1996. Chastain-Otis handles products available in all areas of insurance, which means there’s a lot of variety. Jolene notes that her longevity in the industry has given her the skills she needs to fill many roles at Chastain-Otis. “As office manager, I wear a variety of hats,” Jolene tells us. The staff of 23 includes nine independent agents, a claims specialist, a bookkeeper, and licensed customer service agents. Everyone works together to meet their clients’ needs and expectations. So, what kind of insurance do we need? Medical insurance and life insurance are on everyone’s radar, and we all know that we need insurance coverage on our homes and our cars. Doesn’t that cut it? Maybe not, Jolene notes, and she’s happy to explain why you might not be as protected as you think. In some cases, it’s also necessary to make sure that the people you’re working with or renting to are properly insured. Due diligence should always be taken. Proper insurance coverage will protect you from unexpected expenses and potential litigation. A current trend is that many people rent their homes to temporary tenants, as an Airbnb for example. Guess what? Your homeowner’s insurance may not cover your house if you rent it out. “These are litigious times,” Jolene comments. “Who will pay for any damage if there isn’t proper insurance coverage? Make sure you check with your independent insurance agent to make sure there is proper coverage prior to signing any temporary rental agreement.” The same precautions must be taken if you use your personal vehicle for your job. “Regular personal

40

automobile insurance may not cover your vehicle if it’s used to make deliveries or if you hire out as an Uber or Lyft driver,” Jolene warns. It’s important to find out what insurance is available from employers and supplement it, if necessary. Contractors and service providers who work in your home are another Jolene Schaa, office tricky spot. Always make sure that contractors or manager and partner service providers carry their own insurance! Even if a contractor or service provider assures you that the company is insured, ask to see the certificate of insurance. Jolene explains, “A certificate of insurance showing general liability insurance can assist you in receiving restitution, should the contractor or service provider damage your property while on the job.” In all of these cases, it’s better to be safe than sorry—that’s what insurance is all about. At ChastainOtis, the agents are encouraged to maintain open communication with their clients. Jolene advises that you talk to your agent whenever your insurance situation changes, including events like buying a new house, car, motorcycle, or any other vehicle. Call anytime! Availability is one of the perks of having a local independent agency handling your insurance needs. At Chastain-Otis, they strive to have happy clients. They also appreciate referrals. Kind words come from customer Robin, who says, “I always get prompt service when I call. Everyone is friendly and professional. I’m glad they are my agency.” Jason tells us that the agency “went above and beyond to fill my cycle, auto, and home insurance needs.” Lena chimes in with, “They cover it all…I see no need for improvement.” Chastain-Otis also serves the community through charity events. They maintain the family feeling with gatherings over the summer and at the holidays. Pest Control Defend Your Home Against Unwanted Guests

By Anne Yankus

We call them pests for a reason. They invade our homes, they make a mess, and they can even have adverse effects on our health! Fortunately, we live in an age when we don’t have to just hope that the cat will eat whatever critter is crawling in the rafters—we can call in a pest control professional. As they say, the best offense is a good defense, and there are many preventative measures that will deter pests from staying in your yard and entering your home. The EPA recommends starting with various forms of pest prevention like removing access to sources of food, water, and shelter. This can be accomplished by making sure all food and scraps are stored in sealed containers or bags, by preventing water from accumulating in and around the home, and by closing off any places in your home or yard where pests could enter and hide. Of course, a good defense only goes so far; eventually, you may need to look into an adequate pest control solution. There are many kinds of pest control on the market, so it’s important to know what’s what in order to choose the best kind of control for you and your home. Pesticides are the most common type of pest control. These substances are regulated by the EPA and can be divided into microbial (which contain bacteria, viruses, or fungi) and chemical (natural or synthetic). For common insects and arachnids, most pest control companies recommend regular treatments. Whether or not year-

round treatments are necessary depends, in part, on the climate in your area. If you live in an area with warm winters, looking into having your house and yard sprayed every couple of months isn’t a bad idea. However, if you live in a part of the country that freezes over every winter, you should be able to get away with spraying only during warmer weather. Before choosing a company to spray your home, consider the safety of any pets and children who live with you. Ask your pest control experts whether or not their pesticides are safe for humans and pets and what long-term effects their products could have on the environment. Ask about their certifications and licensure— some pesticides can only be used by certified applicators. Ants and spiders aren’t the only bugs you need to watch out for—termites are the bane of homeowners. Experts recommend having your house checked for termites annually. If you spot any ›››

signs of increased termite activity, such as mud tubes, sagging floors and ceilings, termite excrement, or discarded wings, don’t wait for your annual checkup! Call your pest control professional right away. The mosquito is the natural enemy of any red-blooded mammal, but several preventative measures will help keep mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes escape the daytime heat by hiding in the shade, so keeping your hedges trimmed and your grass cut can help reduce their numbers. You’ll also want to get rid of any standing water, which is the ideal mosquito breeding ground. If you must have standing water around (for pools or water features), be sure to treat it with some form of larvicide or stock it with mosquito-eating fish to keep the population from growing. You can also reduce the mosquito population by making your yard friendlier for their natural predators (like bats, dragonflies, or swallows). Why go through so much effort to eliminate this nuisance? Why not just bug-bomb the whole yard? Unfortunately, mosquitoes are integrated into our ecosystem in such a way that simply spraying pesticides to eliminate mosquitoes would cause more harm than benefit to the environment at large. Experts recommend using pesticide sprays only in cases of large-scale infestations. Bugs aren’t the only pests in our lives. Mammalian pests require significantly different solutions. As with insect control, prevention is the best first step toward keeping intruders such as mice, raccoons, bats, or squirrels out of your attic or basement. Rotten wood, loose shingles, or small gaps on the exterior of your home are basically welcome mats for local rodents, so be sure to inspect and repair your home regularly. Keeping tree branches trimmed back, away from your home, can also stop animals from sneaking into your attic. If some critter still manages to get in, do a little research before hiring an animal removal service. Be sure to confirm whether your expert is being hired for a basic removal or for a full-service removal and repair or prevention job. Make sure to check that the company you call can handle the animal you have in your house. Also, different companies have different trapping methodologies (some more humane than others). A Glimmer of Hope for Life Reproductive Medicine

By Connie Keck

Fertility refers to the natural ability to produce offspring. Conception takes place when the sperm fertilizes the egg. This is often a fairly straightforward process, and many couples don’t give it much thought… until they are surprised to find themselves having trouble getting pregnant. The field of reproductive medicine is dedicated to helping couples conceive. Most women assume that their bodies will cooperate with their plans to become mothers at whatever time they choose. Unfortunately, not every woman has an unimpeded path to pregnancy, and some may wonder how long to wait before exploring reproductive medicine options. Infertility is generally diagnosed when a couple tries to conceive in the traditional way for 12 consecutive months with no resulting viable pregnancy. An evaluation for both the woman and the man can provide helpful and important information about their reproductive potential. About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15–44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infertility has many causes (and, sometimes, more than one at a time). Some causes of infertility include fallopian tube damage or blockage, impaired sperm production or function, ovulation disorders, uterine fibrosis, endometriosis, previous tubal sterilization or removal, and radiation treatment for cancer or other health conditions. With recent advancements in medical technology, there is hope

46

August 2018

for couples who are having difficulty conceiving a child. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART). With IVF, an egg is extracted from the woman and a sperm sample is taken from the man. The egg and sperm are combined manually in the laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus. With this treatment, the sperm and egg can come from the parents or from other egg or sperm donors. IVF is not universally successful, and, as with traditional conception, your chances of a viable pregnancy decrease as you age. In the United States, the live birth rate for each IVF cycle started is approximately 41–43 percent for women younger than 35 years, 33– 36 percent for women aged 35–37 years, 23–27 percent for women ages 38–40, and 13–18 percent for women over 40 years of age. Cryopreservation is a method used to preserve reproductive potential in women. With oocyte cryopreservation, also known as egg freezing, eggs are harvested from a woman’s ovaries, frozen

www.womensedition.com

unfertilized, and stored for later use. This might be an option if you’re not ready to become pregnant now but want to have a biological child in the future, even if you haven’t found your partner yet. A frozen egg can be thawed, combined with sperm in a lab, and implanted in your uterus (through IVF). Embryo cryopreservation is a related procedure, in which the extracted eggs are fertilized but are then frozen for future implantation instead of being implanted in the uterus at the time of fertilization. With both egg freezing and embryo freezing, you’ll need to use fertility drugs to induce ovulation so that you’ll produce multiple eggs for retrieval.Your physician can help you understand the potential risks of both of these procedures and which one might be right for you, based on your personal reproductive history and familybuilding goals. Cryopreservation is often discussed for women who are preparing to undergo radiation treatment or other treatments that may damage the eggs in their ovaries. Patients who need fertility support but do not want to use assisted reproductive technologies like IVF might consider what is known as natural procreative technology. This approach involves assessing the underlying causes of the reproductive abnormality and addressing them with medical and surgical treatments. The goal is to achieve a viable pregnancy through sexual intercourse. Infertility can be a long and difficult road to travel, and you need a physician or fertility clinic that is the right fit for you. Make appointments with a few different places and ask plenty of questions. Are the practitioners board-certified reproductive endocrinologists or infertility specialists? Do they take the time to answer your questions with compassion? What tests and treatments do they use? You’ll also need some financial questions answered, including what the overall costs are, whether they accept insurance or have a payment program, and whether they offer any type of IVF refund program. If you and your partner are having trouble conceiving, don’t lose hope. When you are ready to consider alternative methods to achieve pregnancy, there is help available. The family you’re dreaming of may still be in your future. An Inside Look

Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning Centers of America Let Them Take Care of You By Elizabeth French

Imagine how frustrating it must be to be unable to take care of yourself or your home in the way you always have. In the Omaha area, you can turn to Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning Centers of America for help. These joint businesses, located at 1045 North 115th Street, help people maintain independence in their own homes by assisting with the daily tasks of living. Their motto, and their goal, is to keep their clients “healthy, happy, and at home.” Shirley Tingley, the administrative director, notes that they assist clients of all ages, not just seniors. Whether the client is an adult with a mobility-limiting condition like multiple sclerosis, someone going through the rehabilitation process after surgery, or a senior who needs help with daily tasks, Caring Senior Service prides itself on providing the highest quality non-medical care for their clients. June Mourgis began Caring Senior Service in Omaha after struggling to find help for her aging mother. She wasn’t happy with the options that were offered to her own parents, so she bought a franchise and started on her own. Now employing a cleaning crew and an arsenal of 75 caregivers, the company seeks to help clients stay in their homes as long as possible. With many of their clients in the throes of rehab or living with a permanent medical condition, Caring Senior Service provides one-on-one companionship that nursing homes simply do not. This is particularly attractive for their younger clients. Many nursing care facilities, Shirley explains, are designed for older people. “The activities aren’t designed for a person under 40, so we’re seeing younger people who want to stay in their homes.” One client, for example, is a 36-year-old who was hit by a bus and had to be placed in a nursing home to recuperate. The client had no family to help with rehab, but Caring Senior Service was able to help with everything from getting dressed to performing physical therapy exercises. Shirley has worked at different companies in the caregiving field, and she says it’s the GreatCare method at Caring Senior Service that makes the company stand out. “We take a personal, vested interest in each and every client,” she shares. “We personally introduce every caregiver to every client.” GreatCare focuses on three vital areas: quality caregivers, care solutions, and active involvement. Because she went through the same challenges with her own parents, June knew firsthand what struggles a family faces when an older member needs

48

August 2018

help. June was able to adopt the GreatCare philosophy by catering to front l-r: Owner June every individual’s needs. Each caregiver is personally Mourgis and Jac’e matched to each client, Shirley explains. “It’s very easy back l-r: Jill, Shirley, to sit on a couch and stare at a TV with someone,” Kristy, and Velva Shirley points out, “but that’s not what we’re about. We want to build that personal connection in order to pair the caregiver to the client.” Employing a wide range of caregivers, from soft-spoken CNAs to retired drill sergeants, the Caring Senior Service staff pride themselves on the ability to match clients with their ideal caregivers. Many clients need help with daily tasks like getting dressed or doing range of motion exercises. If a client needs physical therapy or nursing care, Caring Senior Service will work in conjunction with other agencies to best serve a client’s needs. “We can help with shopping, meal prep, companionship, housekeeping, errands, and more,” Shirley continues. They will also help with pet care for clients who have animals. In addition to the more practical needs like nutrition and physical assistance, Caring Senior Service caregivers also provide the companionship that their clients need. Shirley states, “Some clients want us to come out and just read the Bible to them and provide companionship; we can even help them with their hobbies.” She is motivated by her personal experience in senior care. “There are rough days, but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Shirley concludes. “You have to love what you do, and I love my job.” Home Cleaning Centers of America was established because so many of the Caring Senior Service clients needed help keeping their homes clean as physical tasks became more difficult. The two companies operate in the same office and offer both services to better serve their clientele. For people who want to stay at home but need help taking care of the home or of themselves, Caring Senior Service and Home Cleaning Centers of America can help. Focus on Finance

Value Versus Growth How an Investment’s Worth Is Determined By George Morgan

Mutual funds first became available to the American investing public in the mid-1930s. By the early 1980s, mutual funds were still less than 15 percent of the total value of the market, which meant that individual investors had most of their assets in individual stocks. Discount brokers and online trading were a long way off, so investors had to rely on full-service brokers for access to the markets. The brokers needed to have an investment philosophy to provide advice to their clients. The most widely accepted approach, called value investing, was the brainchild of Benjamin Graham. He was an economics professor at Columbia University, and his most famous student was Omaha’s own Warren Buffett. In 1949, Mr. Graham published “The Intelligent Investor,” a book that outlined, in detail, the value investing methodology. Mr. Graham’s approach to selecting which individual stocks to buy was to examine all the available financial information on a publicly traded company and, from there, calculate what he thought the company was worth. The next step was to divide the total value of the company by the number of shares outstanding to come up with what he thought was the appropriate share price. He then looked to see if the share price on the open market was higher or lower than the value that he had calculated. If the market price was lower than his calculated price, he would buy the stock. Theoretically, when other investors saw that the stock was selling at a discount, they would also buy it, which would drive the price up, making a profit for Mr. Graham. Proponents of the value investing approach treat it almost like a religion. They are fanatic about it and see anyone with a different view as almost heretical. Courses on the value investing approach and books about it continue to abound. In the early 1990s, when Mr. Buffett was beginning to gain national recognition, he was very vocal about the value approach and developed an almost cult-like following himself. Over the past decade, his support for this approach has seemed to wane, and he has turned the management of Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio over to two professional money managers. Growth investors take a very different approach to their decision to buy a stock. They are not concerned with the value of a stock relative to its current price— they are looking for companies that are growing at a rapid pace. Their understanding is that, even if they pay more than a fast-growing company’s stock is currently worth, the stock will eventually exceed the price they paid for it because the company is growing so much. The growth approach is relatively new, and it is hard to tell precisely when it came into being. It has no patriarch or seminal publication, and

50

August 2018

the followers of growth investing don’t give off the fanatical vibe that value investors do. One of the issues with the growth investing approach is that, over time, growth stocks can reach a maturity point, after which the growth of their business will begin to slow down. A case in point is Coca-Cola. In the 1990s, it was expanding into Asian markets and was growing rapidly. The company has since saturated those markets, and its business has flattened out. What has been the relative performance over the years of the value approach versus the growth approach? For most of the 20th century, it was back and forth—one approach would outperform the other one for a few years, and then they would swap places. For about the past 10 to 15 years, value investing has underperformed, sometimes quite dramatically, both the growth approach and the market. The reason for the underperformance of value stocks is that, for the method to work, there must be a significantly large number of other investors who see the value of stocks the same way you do. These days, however, there are trillions of dollars in index funds, which buy and sell stocks simply because they are in the index, not because of their value. In today’s market, 85 percent of the total value of the market is controlled by mutual funds. Investors can find funds that specialize in any area of the market that they choose—some funds only invest in value stock and some only invest in growth stock. There are also exchange traded funds that specialize in one or the other. So, what’s the bottom line? The truth is, there are many mutual fund managers who will handle your money and provide advice about value stock versus growth stock…for a substantial fee. In the long term, they will not be able to deliver the performance you can get with a cost-efficient index fund that buys stock in whichever companies are listed in the index. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Seasons of Life

In-Home Care for Seniors A Growing Trend to Remain at Home

By Linda Barnes

Statistics show that a majority of seniors prefer to stay in their own homes as they age—you may hear this referred to as “aging in place.” In the past, unfortunately, this often wasn’t feasible. In today’s world, a whole industry is devoted to making it happen. When seniors who are living at home need help with daily tasks or even in-home medical care, many services are readily available in most locales. Even when seniors are fortunate enough to maintain good general health, the natural aging process brings physical limitations. Housekeeping may prove too arduous, arthritis may limit mobility, or unsteady footing may raise concerns about bathing safely. A few hours each week of in-home care might be just the solution. For seniors with medical conditions or more serious limitations, in-home health professionals have the training and experience to provide the needed assistance. Medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiac problems, or respiratory issues may require a specially trained caregiver. Seniors recovering from a stroke or surgery may need occupational, speech, or physical therapy. Those providing in-home care fall into several categories. Non-medical home care includes everything from companionship to meal preparation, from light housekeeping to transportation to appointments. These caregivers may provide help with bathing and dressing. Caregivers with more health-related training might also monitor the senior’s vitals.

Licensed or certified nursing assistants have more extensive training to take vitals, change dressings, operate medical equipment, assist with walking, and manage some treatments. Any medicalrelated tasks are directed by a registered nurse or nurse practitioner. Caregivers who hold a nursing diploma or associate degree, and who have been licensed by their state’s board of nursing, can provide direct care, operate monitoring equipment, and administer medication. They are the most skilled of the in-home care providers. Physical, occupational, or speech therapists fall into this category, as well. In-home care can be long-term, when an aging family member is expected to need ongoing assistance for the foreseeable future. Other arrangements are shorter term, such as when a senior (or any adult) needs assistance after surgery or during treatment for a serious illness. Short-term care is expected to end as the patient regains health and independence.

www.womensedition.com

In-home care seems an ideal solution to keeping seniors safe and healthy in the homes that they love. One issue looms large—how to pay for such care. Most health insurance, including Medicare, typically only covers in-home medical care that is ordered by a physician. In this case, the medical care must be necessary, the recipient must be unable to easily leave home for treatment, and the care may only be intermittent. Qualified individuals in your community may offer in-home medical or non-medical services, but it may be difficult for you to screen them appropriately if you’re not trained in medical care yourself. An in-home care agency may be the best place to start. The agency will do a professional assessment of your family member’s needs and then create an individualized care plan. A trained professional will visit the home to determine the type and amount of assistance needed. The home or apartment will be evaluated for safety, as well. Some modifications may be needed for safety, such as stair railings, grab bars, additional lighting, or shower seating. Such professionals also have expertise in meeting requirements for Medicare or insurance. Hiring an agency eliminates the need for you to do background checks, verify credentials, deal with payroll issues, and arrange for coverage if the caregiver is unable to report for duty. In addition, Medicare and many insurance plans require that care be provided by a Medicare-certified homehealth agency. Some seniors need only companion care to remain at home. This might include assistance with non-medical tasks such as grocery shopping, housekeeping, or transportation. Studies find that seniors are more apt to thrive with this type of physical and social support. Because agencies offer many advantages, they are often the choice of busy families. Not only do they provide assessments of need, they also ensure that their caregivers are screened and have the necessary training. Agencies know the ins and outs of Medicare and insurance and usually handle the paperwork. It is also advantageous to have different levels of care readily available when circumstances change. When medical in-home services are needed, an agency will coordinate care, communicating with family members, doctors, and caregivers. A whole family’s well-being often improves with in-home care for an aging loved one. Sources for this article included: npr.org, aarp.org, seniorliving.org, and medicare.gov. WE

More Than Karate for Kids Martial Arts for Everyone

By Leslie Byrne

Many people hear the phrase “martial arts” and think immediately of Bruce Lee or “The Karate Kid.” That may be entertaining, but such a limited mindset does us a disservice because it keeps us from experiencing the widely varied benefits of martial arts training. Martial arts, which are sometimes considered combat training, have been taught around the world by different cultures for hundreds of years. Many Americans are most familiar with martial arts from Asia. No matter the country of origin, martial arts disciplines are similar because they all teach self-defense, provide a great physical workout, and increase personal confidence as well as self-control. Regardless of someone’s age or gender, there is a martial arts discipline for everyone. Many women take martial arts classes to gain self-defense skills as well as receive an excellent cardiovascular workout. Martial arts can help children increase focus, selfcontrol, and interpersonal and motor skills. It’s just a matter of understanding what each discipline offers and matching it to your personal interests or needs. Here’s a breakdown of a few of the more common disciplines and their unique benefits. Brazilian jujitsu a weaponless combat sport that focuses on controlling an opponent by using specific holds and grappling moves until the opponent submits. Jujitsu is different from other martial arts because it

involves ground fighting and grappling. This provides real-world benefits, since most real fights or altercations end up on the ground. Jujitsu has become particularly popular because it is used in mixed martial arts (MMA), which is rapidly gaining worldwide popularity. Many men who were already trained in other martial arts are now also training in jujitsu. Don’t let the wild fights you see on television stop you from giving it a try yourself! It is actually a very good discipline for women and kids to learn—jujitsu techniques allow smaller, weaker people to defend themselves against bigger opponents. Kenpo karate is easily recognizable by its rapid, powerful hand strikes along with fast kicks and blocks. Kenpo karate is also sometimes referred to as American Kenpo. Benefits include increased self-control as well as self-defense techniques—plus, it’s a pretty impressive discipline to watch. Tae kwon do originated in Korea and is familiar to most Americans. This martial art involves kicks, jumps, and spinning kicks. It improves coordination, flexibility, and range of motion skills that last a lifetime for women, men, and children alike.

Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, is a combat sport from Thailand. This martial art features stand-up striking kicks to hit an opponent. In addition to the punching and kicking seen in other martial arts, this style encourages the use of other body parts, including elbow strikes and knee strikes. It differs from Western boxing in several ways, notably that clinching is allowed—fighters are not separated when they clinch together while grappling. Kickboxing is generally a combination of karate and boxing. It is great for cardiovascular health, improves body strength, increases hand-eye coordination, and decreases stress. These skills can come in handy in self-defense; you’ll learn how to punch effectively and how to detect an incoming punch. Tai chi developed in ancient China. It consists of a series of deliberate movements that increase balance and focus. Many practitioners of tai chi use it as a meditative practice, though it also has a history of use in combat. Parents whose children have attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism may find martial arts training particularly beneficial for their children. The key aspects of calm reflection, self-control, and deliberate movements can help kids who have trouble focusing. Consistent class structure as well as the focus on respect for self, instructor, and peers can also be beneficial. Once you’ve decided which of the martial arts will help you meet your own goals, it’s time to find a qualified instructor. This can be challenging. It takes decades to become an expert in a single martial art, so be wary of instructors who claim to have reached an exceptionally high rank at a very young age or those who claim to have a high rank in multiple disciplines. Ask around and research online until you find a few different schools or instructors in your area and then go observe a class. Note how the current students react to the instructor— this can show you whether or not they respect the instructor’s expertise and teaching abilities. If you’re curious about martial arts, go visit a class! Don’t let your age or inexperience stand in your way—there really is a class for everyone at any age. With so many different styles and so many different benefits, one of the martial arts can surely help you meet your goals. Has Your Vehicle Gone to Hail? Getting Back on the Road After Hail Damage By Brennan Hallock

Hail damage can happen to anyone’s vehicle. There are ways to lower your risk, such as keeping your vehicle in a garage or other covered location, but you can always find yourself caught in the middle of a downpour of hail (no matter where you usually park). When you find yourself caught in a hailstorm, remember to protect yourself first and your vehicle second. Yes, you may have a valuable vehicle, but hail can create dangerous driving conditions or even cause physical harm to you if you are not sheltered. Finding an overpass or parking garage can help protect you from harm and can mitigate the damage done to your vehicle. If you do end up with body damage to your vehicle because of hail, it is best to file an insurance claim and have the damage repaired right away, even if it looks relatively minor. Contact your insurance representative and schedule a time for an adjustor to look at your vehicle. Some people may be tempted to leave the hail damage and continue driving the vehicle, as hail damage may be merely cosmetic, but it is best to have it inspected. If you wait until later to repair the damage, you will not be able to file an insurance claim and will end up paying for any repairs out of pocket. Another factor to consider is whether or not you own your vehicle. If you have completely paid off your vehicle and are

the true owner, then you are not obliged to repair hail damage, although it is recommended. If you do not own your vehicle outright, though, you will be legally required to file an insurance claim and repair the damage. You must maintain the vehicle’s general value, and willingly allowing the value to decline because of hail damage would likely be violating the terms of your lease or loan. If you think your vehicle is drivable, make sure you take the time to clean off all the storm debris and do a thorough inspection of your vehicle before heading home or to the repair shop. Inspect your vehicle’s lights and turn signals to ensure you can safely drive on streets with other vehicles. If any windows were broken, it’s best to wear protective gloves and safety glasses while you inspect your vehicle, as broken glass can lodge itself in seats.

Broken glass, especially a broken windshield, is one of the most disruptive types of hail damage. A strong hailstorm has the ability to break a windshield, leaving you with a vehicle that is not drivable. If your windshield has been broken by hail, you must arrange for your vehicle to be towed to a collision repair facility. In the meantime, temporarily cover any broken windows with plastic and tape—if it is available—to prevent injury from broken glass. You should then clean up any broken glass around your vehicle (again, while wearing protective gloves and safety glasses). A broken windshield is typically covered by comprehensive insurance without having to pay a deductible. Once you have contacted your insurance company and filed your claim, you have some options for repairing body damage to your vehicle. The main types of hail damage repair are conventional body repair and paintless dent repair. Conventional body repair involves removing a panel that has been damaged by hail, banging out the dents, and then sanding and repainting the panel to match the rest of your vehicle. It could also include replacing a damaged panel entirely. Conventional methods can repair

any amount of hail damage, no matter how severe. However, these methods are time-consuming and expensive. If you have a specialty vehicle, it may be difficult to match the paint or panel exactly. Paintless dent repair is a meticulous process that returns dents to their original shape without painting any part of the vehicle or replacing any panels. A technician pushes and massages out each dent, using a metal rod, from the underside of the vehicle. The metal ends up looking like it did prior to the damage, and no painting is involved. This method is cheaper than conventional repair and can often be done in one day. However, paintless dent repair only works on shallow dents—if the metal is sharply creased or the paint is damaged, dents can’t be repaired this way. If your vehicle has sustained hail damage, don’t get bent out of shape. File a claim with your insurance company, decide what type of dent repair is best for the damage, and you’ll be back on the road in no time. The Good Life

The Power of Dance Shimmy Your Way to Health and Happiness Holly Tierney-Bedord

You’ve probably heard the African proverb “If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing.” I remember seeing that years ago and thinking that it didn’t ring true—at least, not for me. Like many people, I suffered from self-consciousness and was unable to see that singing and dancing are expressions of joy and don’t have to be about displaying your talent. Who hasn’t seen a toddler, too young to be concerned with what others think, bopping along to music? They’re reminding us of something we all used to know, when we were their age: Dancing is one of the most basic human expressions of joy and happiness. Whether or not you’re a great dancer, you should get out there and enjoy it. Dancing has many physical health benefits, including burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance and coordination. It also provides the psychological benefits of building confidence, making stronger social connections, and releasing endorphins, which can help fight depression. Enrolling kids in dance classes is a great idea—the sooner they become comfortable dancing, the more likely it will develop into a lifelong love. It’s never too soon to start! Luckily for those of us who missed out on formal childhood dance instruction, it’s also never too late to start. Dance instructors are used to seeing people of all ages and skill levels. Even seniors can take beginners’ lessons in all styles, from tap to ballet to jazz and more. You can participate solo or with a partner. Just like many people would rather follow a recipe than cook without a plan, many people find that following structured, specific steps makes learning to dance less intimidating. However, if you prefer to do your own steps, a looser approach that’s more about getting your blood pumping may be a better fit for you. Call your local dance studio and ask for advice, making it clear what your goals are. Someone who wants to learn ballroom dancing for an upcoming wedding will have a completely different agenda than someone who just wants to burn some calories and blow off some steam. If you watch shows like Dancing with the Stars, you’re probably familiar with many styles of ballroom dance, including waltz, foxtrot, tango, quickstep, rumba, cha cha, swing, jive, samba, mambo, and more. Less traditional dances include things like country twostep, salsa, the Lindy hop, the Charleston, and many more. Competitive dancers like the ones on that show have made a life and career out of their dance skills and dedication. They travel the world, showing off their talents and inspiring others. What’s fascinating is that dancing, like music, is truly a language of its own. Two classically trained dancers may not be able to speak a word to each other but can come together to communicate by dancing in a perfectly clear, expressive way.

60

August 2018

While these ballroom dances are beautiful, they can look a little intimidating. Also, they require dancing with a partner (although you don’t necessarily need a partner to sign up for lessons). If ballroom dancing isn’t for you, you have many other options. You can probably picture many types of dance, like tap, ballet, belly dancing, folk dancing, square dancing, Irish step dancing, breakdancing, and more. To connect with your heritage, consider learning more about the native dances of your own ancestors. There are so many options! Once you uncover a passion for dance, you’ll never have to stop learning. If you’re unsure what style of dance is right for you, call up your local dance studio to chat about your goals. Once you’re ready to jump in, you have plenty of ways to make it happen. Most cities have a variety of dance studios. It’s also not uncommon for schools, colleges, and community centers to offer dance classes. People may also form in-home dance clubs. For instance, the dance troupes you see performing in parades and at summer festivals may be privately organized and meet at someone’s home. There are also people who offer private, in-home dance lessons. The bottom line is: If you want to dance, dance! Don’t let self-consciousness hold you back from the joy of dancing (not to mention the physical and mental health benefits). Consider taking some lessons if that will give you the confidence you need to break through and get out there on the dance floor the next time a wedding or party rolls around. While you’re building your confidence, practice at home in the mirror. Whatever you do, don’t let fear of embarrassment stop you from enjoying the many benefits of dancing. Great Escapes

River Cruises

Domestic and International By Jackie Williams

Ahh…river cruising. If you have ever had the privilege of taking a river cruise, then you know the feeling. Utter relaxation and luxury as you watch the ever-changing scenery along a peaceful river. Take one, and you will always want another. River cruising is quite different from traditional ocean cruising. River cruise ships are a lot smaller than ocean cruise liners, with the largest river ships holding up to around 200 passengers. The service aboard the well-known river cruise companies is impeccable. The ratio of passengers to staff is two to one (or even one to one!), so everything you can think of is already taken care of for you or handled as soon as you make a request. The staff members learn your name right away—and they use it! With ocean cruising, you always have some days “at sea,” where the view stays the same until you finally approach your next port. Not so on a river cruise! When you take a river cruise, the coastline changes constantly. You may pass castles, parks, gorgeous properties, small towns, and people waving hello from the shore. Passing through the locks is exciting, too. With no sea sickness to worry about, you can sit on your own veranda or on the deck whenever you want to enjoy the varied view.

Another way that river cruises differ from ocean cruises is that alcohol is generally included, with wine and beer available at lunch and dinner, along with a cocktail hour. Of course, there is also a regular bar for anything else you might like to order. The food is amazing, too. Think “quality” rather than “quantity” (no huge buffets). You can dress up or down however you want; no pressure or extra packing for multiple formal nights. It’s not just alcohol that’s included—just about everything is included on a river cruise, even daily tours and Wi-Fi! While the upfront price of a river cruise is higher than an ocean cruise, you are likely to get a better value than if you buy a cheap ticket up front and then get nickel-and-dimed for amenities. Your travel agent can even get you a package to include airfare that would be cheaper than if you bought it separately. VIP experience. Personally, I felt like I was receiving VIP service from the moment I booked my ticket for my Viking River Cruise experience. One cool thing about river cruises is that you don’t even need to leave the country to enjoy one! Within the United States, you can cruise the Mississippi, Ohio, Hudson, Columbia, and Snake Rivers with companies such as American Cruise Lines, Blount Small Ship Adventures, UnCruise Adventures, and the American Queen Steamboat Company, to name a few. Don’t forget about Alaska! American river cruises focus on history, nature, and wildlife in most areas; they will make you feel like you are worlds away even though you are just in your own backyard. If you’re traveling internationally and hoping to explore several countries in a single trip, a river cruise is one of the best ways to do it. The most popular European itineraries are on the Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers, but there’s no need to limit yourself to Europe! Consider the Yangtze River in China, the Nile River in Egypt, or the Mekong River in southeast Asia for completely different experiences in sights, culture, and food. On a river cruise, you are likely to join other experienced travelers (usually 55 years and older) who are interested in travel, culture, and history and who have some great stories and recommendations to share. Daily lectures about the next destination will whet your appetite and educate you on the area so you can use your time to the fullest. Cruise lines to consider would be Viking River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Crystal River Cruises, Tauck, and Uniworld River Cruises, to name a few. It is really hard to choose between them—they all have wonderful service, beautiful accommodations and ships, and delicious food. Talk with your travel agent to discuss where you want to travel and what time of year you want to go…as well as which itineraries haven’t sold out yet! That’s right—popular itineraries sell out like hot cakes. I guess we aren’t the only ones who enjoy a luxury hotel on the water! Remember, if you have cruised with one of these companies before, there are always incentives to return and to bring new guests with you. Ask your travel agent about taking advantage of the available deals and get ready to sail! Sources for this article included: vikingrivercruises.com, cruisecritic.com, and americancruisellines.com. After 20 years on Bob Boozer Drive, the firm moved to its current location (in Suite 102 at 16820 Frances Street) to accommodate its growing staff. Curt himself has been working in commercial development for the past 12 years. Steve Huber, the co-owner and president, ensures that the firm continues growing year after year. After working in cornfields and on construction sites in his youth, Steve put his skills to great use when he discovered architecture and design. “I’ve always been a guy who likes working with my hands,” he says. “I’ve always got a project going on at home.” When he started honing his craft, drafting was still done without the use of technology—that means blueprints and measurements were all done by hand, and they had to be precise to the inch for a home to be structurally sound. Steve and Curt met after college and bonded over their passion for architecture, their mutual work ethic, and their small-town Nebraska roots. “I worked for Millard Lumber as an outside salesman, and Curt was just getting started with his business,” Steve recalls. “After I sold him material for 2 or 3 years, he asked if I wanted to make a career out of this, and I came on with him as a superintendent.” About four years later, Steve joined Curt as a partner. Today, Steve works with family, too—his son, Zach, is an assistant project manager, and his wife, Kristi, is their controller! The team at Curt Hofer & Associates builds homes of all sizes and budgets, and they’re always up for a creative challenge. “We’ve put together a great team over the last 20 years,” Steve shares. “We have our own in-house design, we have our own plans. We’ve never built the same home twice!” Amenities such as outdoor living areas with kitchens and entertainment spaces are some of the current trends. Designer Marshall Wallman has been with them for 17 years, working to ensure that everything is one of a kind, down to the last detail. The process of building a home can feel intimidating, but building fresh can be a better choice than remodeling. “People typically can’t find exactly what they want in the used house market,” Steve says. “That’s where we come in.” While remodeling an existing home may seem cheaper and quicker, building a home from the ground up with Curt Hofer & Associates can create the living space of your dreams without worrying about any “old bones.” “Building a home can be overwhelming,” share clients Scot and Misty Sorensen. “Curt Hofer & Associates made our experience anything but that.

The inevitable and expected snags that occurred were never alarming because of their input, suggestions, and follow-through. Their attention to detail was outstanding.” One aspect that sets Curt Hofer & Associates apart from the pack is their continued relationship with clients after the home is completed. “Unfortunately, in our industry, once a house is done, the builder and client usually never see each other again,” Steve explains. “We’re a little bit different. Most of our clients are clients for life. We do our planning up front with a good set of plans, and we have a service department to take care of clients’ needs now and in the future. Once we build a home, we continue to maintain it.” Homes, like cars, need routine maintenance to keep them in tip-top shape. This kind of follow-up service is rare in today’s industry. Once you’ve decided to build a home of your own, the team at Curt Hofer & Associates will help you make the design choices that meet your needs and your budget. Function and square footage are only two aspects of the design process, Steve reminds us. When accessories and technology come into play, a budget can skyrocket. “You can spend $8,000 or $45,000 on appliances in the same kitchen,” he points out. He likens the process to choosing a car: “Do you want to drive a Ferrari or a Honda Accord? They both have four wheels and a steering wheel, but it’s a different experience.” They’re invested in building modern homes, including smart homes with connected features like refrigerators, air conditioning, lights, security system, and even coffee makers. However, they aren’t distracted by shiny, new technology—they always take longevity into consideration when building homes. For example, they often install (or leave room to eventually install) an elevator to accommodate residents of all ages and abilities. Are you looking for a home that you can call yours forever? The Green Thumb

Garden Envy It’s Only Natural

By Sharon Knierim

Raise your hand if you’ve ever passed by or visited a garden that you wished was your own. Keep your hand in the air if you’ve ever copied (or tried to copy) what you’ve seen on other properties, whether they be private gardens or public displays. If we’re truthful with ourselves, we should probably all have our hands in the air. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, gardening is a wonderful example. Of course, all of us gardeners want our yards or properties to be unique expressions of ourselves, but taking visual cues from gardens and plantings already established is one of the most natural ways to enhance the beauty of our own environments. Sometimes, we see an arrangement that would be just perfect in one area of our yard or garden. At other times, we understand that a bit of modification of an existing “showing” would certainly add beauty and interest to our own yards. It is certainly not a crime to copy what someone else has landscaped and planted. After all, that gardener may have done just the same! As gardeners, we know what we like, and, after a few seasons spent in the dirt, we know what works and what will not be successful. We have all had our triumphs as well as failures, but we are always willing to trudge on and attempt something new and adventurous.

Gardening is, in large part, about finding solutions. When viewing other gardens or participating in annual garden walks, we are given the opportunity to study how other gardeners have conquered their own landscapes and found success, many of them turning their gardens into green or color-driven paradises. If you encounter an area in a garden (or an entire garden) that you wholeheartedly admire, make an attempt to contact the gardener or homeowner to ask about how the garden was set up, what products were used, and what maintenance issues arose. Please remember to respect other gardeners’ privacy. Nothing is more unnerving than finding strangers trudging through our private property, handling our precious plants or

taking pictures without permission! If you just ask, most gardeners will find it flattering that you have shown an interest and appreciation in their hard work and will be more than willing to share information. Who knows? You may gain a new friendship with someone who shares your passion for gardening and all things growing. Some of the best garden associations have started this way, and, as all gardeners know, this is where the best plant and seed sharing can be found. Give it a try! You will probably be really glad that you did. When we shop at gardening centers and flower shows devoted to one particular type of plant, we are, in fact, imitating what we see. We observe, we imagine how certain plants would thrive in our own gardens, and we often purchase what the plant dealer has chosen to sell. Eager shoppers will take home their prized purchases and incorporate those plants into their own landscapes. With dedication and a little luck, the plants will end up being just as lovely as they are where they are on display. If you are a son or a daughter or other close relative or friend of a gardener and have had the wonderful experience of growing up around that gardener, you have probably already modeled part of your landscape to be in tune with your early memories of what that gardener displayed. For example: I love zinnias. Love them! However, even today, I will not plant them in the front yard because my mother, who was a green-thumbed type of girl, believed that zinnias were too informal for the front yard. They were relegated to the side or back yard or bordered the vegetable garden but were never, ever planted in front of the house. We all have our quirks! I don’t know if I should count that as her quirk or mine, but if you want to find my zinnias, you’ll have to look around back! As you take the opportunity to observe other gardens, gather up ideas and images and use them at will in your own space. Gardeners understand (perhaps more than most people) that beauty is to be shared with others, and this is a wonderful method for doing so. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE August 2018

Cuddly Critters

Could Fish Be in Your Future? Aquarium Care 101 By Elizabeth French

With no limits but the imagination, aquariums are emerging as focal points in commercial lobbies, as elaborate inlaid headboards, or even as unique conversation pieces fit under staircases. With tanks of all sizes and fish of all colors, an aquarium can create a feeling of relaxation and tranquility by housing a dazzling array of coral, leafy plants, and fish. Before embarking on your aquarium design quest, however, it is essential to know the basic ins and outs of the type of fish you want as well as their individual care requirements. An aquarium is a long-term investment; most fish, depending on breed and care, can live between five and 10 years. As with owning any pets, it takes time and dedication to keep an aquarium in tip-top condition for the sake of your aquatic beauties. Generally speaking, the bigger the tank is, the more maintenance and care it will need to keep its filtration system clean. For beginners, especially families with children or other pets, the best starter aquarium is a small one (with a lid for prying paws and fingers). With a tank that holds between one and 10 gallons of water, weekly maintenance can be as easy as cleaning the filter, changing out some of the water, and removing built-up residue. For younger children, an aquarium can create the perfect opportunity to learn the responsibilities of caring for a pet. If you decide to go with a grander aquarium and a more opulent marine display, there are a few additional steps that need to be taken before your fish can move in. If you opt for a freshwater aquarium, you must first set up the aquarium (filled with water) and let the filter run for at least 24 hours. This will allow the good and bad bacteria in the aquarium to balance out. After that, you can add in a small number of hardy fish, such as danios or gourami, that can withstand a certain amount of ammonia and nitrites in the water. These small fish are generally non-aggressive and can get along with other fish in the vicinity. Some other freshwater fish that are very popular include neon tetras, guppies, oscars (known to perform “tricks” and eat directly from the hand), mollies (watch out—they breed like bunnies!), platies, discus, and bettas. Not all these fish live harmoniously, so it is essential to do your research before buying a particular breed. You should never buy a fish simply because of its looks! Each species has its own set of care instructions; the more extensive these requirements, the more expensive it will be to care for your fishy friends. To care for a larger aquarium, be sure to check the temperature and pH levels daily. Weekly, replace at least 10 percent of the current water supply with fresh, clean water and clean away any residual algae that may have built up. Monthly, replace 25 percent of the tank’s water with clean water, inspect or replace the filter components, and trim growing plants (if necessary). For tanks under

70

August 2018

55 gallons, an under-gravel filter or an external power filter is recommended to cycle the water continuously and draw out impurities. A saltwater aquarium offers the exquisite beauty of saltwater fish, but there are many important factors to consider before making the costly and time-consuming decision to care for a saltwater aquarium. First of all: If the care and maintenance of a freshwater tank sounds like a lot, saltwater tank maintenance will make it seem like a walk in the park. Also, the cost to set up a saltwater aquarium is significantly higher than a freshwater tank. However, because of the element of saline in the water, owners have the fascinating option of growing a coral reef in their aquariums. Of course, there’s also the benefit of raising some stunning saltwater fish. The most beautiful schooling saltwater fish are the tiny neon tetras, which are red with a neon blue stripe. Coral beauty angelfish, butterfly fish, clown fish, tangs, fire-fish, and dottybacks are all vibrantly colored and will create a symphony of color in any lobby or living space. Keep in mind that the rarity and beauty of saltwater fish can raise the price of your aquarium even more—prices can reach over $100 for a single fish, and some of them are not sold in pet stores. Consider starting an aquarium! It’s a great way to bring beauty to your home or office and to teach your kids about the responsibilities of pet ownership. As you likely know if you’ve ever gazed into an aquarium, watching fish can induce a meditative state with all its potential benefits, including lower blood pressure and decreased stress and anxiety. Positive Perspective

An Effective Team

Getting People to Engage

By Janet Van deWalle

Whether you are a business owner, manager, or simply someone who wants the most out of your career, there are certain things we can all do to help create a more enjoyable and productive work environment. The question then becomes: What do we do, and how do we do it? If you are looking to become more engaged in your job or to help others become more involved, here are a few suggestions. Be accessible. Everyone is busy, but realize the importance of taking time to answer questions, and share new experiences. This is especially important if you are in a leadership position. Your team needs to know that you have time for them, that they are important. If you can’t break free at that moment because of a meeting or other obligation, make sure to come back to them as soon as possible. Following up as soon as you can shows that they are important to you and to the company.

work lives. I’m not saying to act as a sounding board for all of their life problems, but sometimes just knowing that there is a support system within the company can help put people at ease. On the flip side, share a bit about yourself, as well. This will help to create a true bond, and, through that relationship, trust can grow. A strong relationship will help you all grow and learn. It will also enable you to have the harder conversations if they are needed. Be real. No one is an island, and showing that you, too, can be vulnerable allows your team to see that you are not perfect. If you make a mistake, own it—don’t make excuses or put the blame on someone or something else. Remember it’s okay to admit that you don’t know things, and yes, there will be times that you don’t know what you don’t know. Most importantly, don’t let your ego get involved. People don’t like to work with or for people who they feel talk down to them.

“Talk is by far the most accessible of pleasures. It costs nothing in money; it is all profit; it completes our education; founds and fosters our friendships; and can be enjoyed in almost any state of health.”—Robert Louis Stevenson

“Ego stops you from getting things done and getting people to work with you. That’s why I firmly believe that ego and success are not compatible.” —Harvey Mackay

Get to know your team. Show genuine interest in people. Each person has his or her own life situations, and it is unrealistic to think things that happen outside of work don’t influence people’s

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to creating the perfect working environment. All we can do is work at being our best. Perhaps these few suggestions will help you and your team become more engaged. WE
