A Permanent Solution Confidently Smooth Skin By Maria Harding

Electrolysis has been around for almost 150 years. It has remained the most efficient permanent hair removal method since 1875, though it has undergone significant technological improvements. Waxing, threading, and cream depilatories are heavily marketed, but only electrolysis permanently removes all types of hair on all types of skin. Julie Adams, owner and technician at A Permanent Solution, has been in practice since 2006. She has developed a reputation for such dependable results that her business endured only a brief pause during the mandatory pandemic shutdown. Since reopening, her schedule has remained packed, as clients queue up to resume their appointments. “I’ve had a lot of people say that now that we’re wearing masks, they have let their facial hairs grow out enough,” she says, with a laugh. “I’ve actually been busier now than before.” Electrolysis techniques are constantly being refined and improved. If you tried electrolysis 10 years ago, your experience today may be very different. “These machines are a lot faster,” says Julie. “It’s a lot more comfortable on the nerves.” Julie uses two different electrolysis methods—thermolysis and blend. Thermolysis uses quick bursts of heat. The blend method uses a combination of thermolysis and galvanic electrolysis, which creates a chemical reaction through electrical current. Factors such as hair coarseness and location may determine which approach is best. “I look at each client’s skin and choose the modality based on the moisture in the skin and a lot of other factors,” she explains. Electrolysis is most effective when the hair is in the new growth stage. During new growth, Julie explains, “the hair has more moisture and a better reaction. When it’s shedding, there’s not as much moisture, and it’s separated from the bottom of the follicle.” At any given time, only 10 to 15 percent of all hairs on a person’s body are actively growing. For this reason, clients will need to return for treatments every week or two, allowing each hair to cycle through to the new growth stage. Clients can expect each session to last from 30 minutes to an hour and can save money by pre-purchasing a multi-hour bundle that can be broken up as needed. “Clients who need longer or more frequent sessions have that option to make it more affordable,” Julie says. Electrolysis cannot be performed in the nose or inside the ear canal because those areas are more prone to infection. People with pacemakers can receive electrolysis treatments with a doctor’s consent. Beyond these restrictions, virtually any part of the body can be treated with electrolysis.

Electrolysis is a also great option for men. “A lot of men get their ears done,” Julie says, “and many get their cheeks done if their beard goes Julie Adams, BFA, LE, Owner up high on their face.” Hairlines at the brow or neck can be reshaped. Transgender women have unique hair removal challenges, and Julie wants members of this community to know they are warmly welcome at A Permanent Solution. Removing hair from the face and body can be an important part of feeling confident and beautiful. Laser hair removal is popular, but it has its limitations. “Laser is really good at treating dark hair on very pale skin, because laser treats the pigment in the hair to destroy the follicle,” Julie explains. Electrolysis, on the other hand, can effectively treat hair of any color. “Clients who have gotten laser done first usually have to come in so I can clean up what laser removal can’t get.” At the initial consultation, Julie gathers information about a client’s health history, including any underlying medical conditions or medications that may contribute to unwanted hair growth. Hormonal changes are the most common reason for increased body hair. “Menopause is one of the times in our life when we tend to get hair in places like the chin and the upper lip because our estrogen levels drop,” Julie says. If she notices hair growth that is consistent with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or other medical issues, she may suggest that her clients consult with a physician. “I see a lot of the signs of PCOS,” she says, “and many people haven’t been diagnosed yet.” Julie Adams is an affable and generous woman. During sessions at A Permanent Solution, you might enjoy hearing about her volunteerism in organizations that support young women in our community, or you can pick her brain about fashion design, which was the focus of her degree. Together, you can discuss which of the latest spring trends will best feature your sleek, bared limbs! A Permanent Solution is conveniently located at 4910 Dodge Street, sharing the same block as Film Streams’ Dundee Theater since 2012.
