6970 Texas Dr, Kalamazoo, MI HOURS: Mon-Thurs: 4-9 pm Fri: 4-10 pm | Sat: 11 am - 10 pm
I haven’t been eating out as frequently as I normally do since the pandemic hit, so when I go out, I want to make sure it’s an exceptional meal! After some research, I decided to try out the Texas Corners Brewing Company. Texas Corners Brewery is a family-owned business that decided to pair their excellent ciders and beers with some fantastic farm to table food at a historic church in 2015.
The building is beautiful. The old church is cute, and they renovated it to give a taproom feel, while still maintaining a church-like vibe. They have also added a beautiful patio outback. The patio was large and had lots of umbrellas to keep you cool under the hot summer sun.
I was greeted at the door by an employee with a facemask who showed me to my table near the bar. The bar itself was closed, so no seating there, and they have their tables at half capacity and spaced out, so we were all more than 6 feet apart. I felt very comfortable there, even with the ongoing pandemic. Our server greeted my friend and I and told us they made all their beers, ciders and seltzers, and they offer FREE SAMPLES of any to try before ordering. I ordered a few samples to and went with their Farmers Tan, which is a light lager. It was light and crisp and easily drinkable! My friend went with their Pineapple Idle Time, which is their seasonal IPA. It was served with a giant slice of Pineapple on the rim, and my friend was happy with her selection.
For a starter, we went with the Soft Pretzels & Beer Cheese to share. It came with two soft pretzels shaped like breadsticks, and the beer cheese was made with their Three Brothers IPA. The cheese
8

was light and delicious, and the pretzels were super soft and salty. So yummy!
For entrees, my friend went with their Veggie Pizza. Our server explained that they do whatever veggies were seasonal. For her, that meant it had zucchini, squash, bell peppers, and red onion.
I went with their Bison Burger. I had seen on their website beforehand that this is a specialty of theirs. And the bison comes from their farm in Schoolcraft! Talk about farm to table!
I also ordered a small Caesar Salad to start my meal because a friend of mine promised me it was delicious.
My salad came out first, and the small bowl was the perfect size as a start to my meal. My friend was correct; it WAS delicious. I would consider ordering this as a meal in their larger size and adding a protein.
Her pizza was beautiful! So many colors with all the veggies. It was a small size, but plenty of food, so it would be suitable for one person, with some leftovers. The crust was crispy, and the veggies were perfect with a little crunch left to them. The cheese was a blend of four types and was terrific. The sauce was an herb cream spread, and there was not a ton on there, but enough to give it some flavor.
My Bison Burger was SO good! It was topped with lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, and a delicious Cajun aioli. It also came with some of the best fries I have had from a restaurant. They were large and hearty and tasted so fresh. I enjoyed my meal so much that I ordered another Bison Burger to take home to my husband, knowing how much he would enjoy it as well! (He devoured it quickly when I got home!) Texas Corners Brewing Company was excellent. The service was great, the food and drinks were amazing, and I felt incredibly comfortable eating there even with everything going on. I cannot wait to go back! LOOK WHO’S TALKING |
Kalamazoo Safari Company EVERY TRIP TO TANZANIA HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE Each safari has its distinctive flair. I first fell in love with galloping giraffes and believed that they would always remain my favorite, but that has not proven to be true. On a high bluff overlooking a river, we stopped abreast three lionesses casting an intense stare into the valley. Through communication and coordination, they slinked away from their perch to descend towards the massive zebra herd. After their successful hunt, they dragged their dinner to the river and waited. Enthralled with the scene unfolding below us, we were surprised by the parade of females, juveniles, and cubs filing silently by to join the waiting mothers by the river. Elephants are the landscapers of the savannah; using their mass, strength, and tusks as tools. I’ve also watched their gentleness with their trunk, using it as a straw, personal grooming scrubber, and a “hand” tugging a Go Pro held in my son’s hand. This pinnacle of matriarchal community can be seen within the elephant herd shortly after the birth of a baby. The females form a circle enclosing the newborn calf within the protective wall of grey hide and tusks. Although hippos are the grossest, they are ridiculously entertaining to watch. They fart, burp, fling feces with their tails, fight, squirm, snort, and bellow - the worst of adolescent boy behavior. The guides laugh and say, “You’ll still smell them from your photographs.” The mating ostrich dance is as graceful as the Flamenco with equal feathers and flaunt. Cheetah lives are spent

scouting. They have speed but lack strength and endurance, forcing them to preserve energy. Cheetahs use stumps, termite mounds, and sometimes Land Cruisers to enhance their view across the flat endless grassland. When a cheetah leapt up on our spare tire, my heart stopped, I didn’t breathe, and it took everything I had to look into the eyes of the most beautiful feline. And in her eyes, I realized that she didn’t even see me. She gazed through us emphasizing how inconsequential our existence was. She was there for the elevation boost only. I’ve just highlighted a few memorable natural moments. We equally enjoy dancing with locals, hunting with the Hadza, grinding coffee, summitting Mt. Kilimanjaro, floating in crystal clear springs, watching the sun disappear over an extinct volcano, and especially seeing a smile split the face of a child and eyes light up like happy chocolate kisses just from the gift of school supplies and from being seen.

HOW DID KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY COME TO BE? KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY was born from our love of Tanzania and our desire to share with those inspired to journey there. Every sense ignites as you are immersed in a sensory smorgasbord of taste, scents, sights, sounds, and touch. Your world expands as you explore the Cradle of Mankind and the wildness that reigns supreme. Sunsets in Africa hold light differently, the shimmer of reds and oranges intensified by ancient volcanic debris and landscapes. And if you are lucky, by the time your travel ends, you might just feel that this trip marks a personal dawn, the time that you woke to view the world a little bit differently.
And since this is a love story, it is important to share how Erfan and I met. Of how, I first fell in love with a Tanzanian and then the country.
Erfan was born in Tanzania and immigrated to the United States at age 19 to attend university. There are many reasons that he chose the United States for education over elsewhere, but here he felt that he’d be able to learn and grow beyond the opportunity set available in East Africa. Eventually, he joined Trilogy as a computer programmer and statistician and moved to Kalamazoo. I attended university at Western Michigan and started my career as a financial planner and investment advisor. During my sophomore year, I had the opportunity to go on a threeweek adventure to Kenya and Tanzania but could not afford the excursion. I held onto that itinerary feeding my dreams of travel to East Africa.
In the spring of 1994, our paths crossed at the corner of Burdick and Lovell and again at The Warehouse Night Club the next night. The first time we met, there was discussion of adventure, but not Tanzania. Erf was always planning adventures, most likely to West Virginia, to raft the white water of the Upper Gauley River or the perhaps the Miracle Mile on the Youghiogheny in Maryland. The night at the bar I found out that “Earth” was from Tanzania. I was fascinated by this handsome man from Tanzania and who planned adventures. “Earth” was intrigued by this woman forward enough to invite herself rafting and who knew where Tanzania was located and its importance. (Erf edit: While all true, Erf says initially his attraction to me was more about my hotness than my mind.) Our mutual attraction to fun, adventure, and each other took root and blossomed SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN
MAGAZINE | EXPO
into a marriage combining continents and cultures. Our third wedding was in Tanzania at his community’s mosque where I was an honored guest with a privileged front row seat. I respectfully honored every nuance of his family’s culture.
Our honeymoon was a Tanzanian safari. The vistas and sunlight did not disappoint. I remember falling in love with giraffes when they broke out in gallop in front of us. Following a herd of galloping giraffes blend wild with magnificence. The scene is breathtaking. It is a bit like watching a herd of horses run through pasture - but wilder, larger, and otherworldly. There were other moments that made me love travel to East Africa on that trip, including the famous hospitality and the food. But what touched me most was immersion into the endless landscape, the feeling of insignificance and humbleness, while witnessing the wilderness spectacle of the Serengeti. It was, it is magical. Over the next decade we focused on growing our family rather than returning to Tanzania. We made promises to friends and family to one day take them back with us. We wanted to share the magnificence of Erfan’s roots; to create a trip where they would experience everything that I loved about visiting there. We first traveled with my parents in 2008 and then decided to host the long-promised friend trip in 2012. When we tossed out the idea casually, the response was gratifying as 28 people said that they’d love to go. While our desire to share Tanzania with those wanting to travel was already seeded, this trip ultimately became the genesis of the KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY.
I thought organizing a trip for 28 people from two countries and five states would be easy. I thought that I would call or email one of several safari companies I knew firsthand or had seen while in Tanzania. I thought that they would be thrilled to work with a group of 28 who knew where they wanted to go and what they wanted to see. I was wrong. No one wanted to work with us. Everyone wanted us to buy a prepackaged safari and Kilimanjaro hike. There are places in Tanzania that are less fabulous than others and I wanted our group to experience the best. Going to Tanzania is an investment of time and money and I wanted to provide both a memorable experience AND value. As time passed, I was a trip organizer without a
plan. I thought that we were going to either pay a lot more to travel with one of the more expensive safari outfitters or sacrifice our itinerary. And then I met Elvice.
Elvice is still our partner today. When we met, he’d split from Abercrombie just a couple of years earlier to book custom trips. At that time, his business was mostly European. As I asked questions, his answers clearly indicated that he was hearing our travel desires and was willing to cater to them. During this trip, there were several moments where his team’s service exceeded all expectations. Most notably, two of our Kilimanjaro climbers abandoned their luggage in the Nairobi airport. Elvice miraculously retrieved the duffle bags and his team hiked them up to our Kilimanjaro hikers three days into their hike. They literally delivered bags on the mountain in order to outfit our guests. Erf and I loved sharing Tanzania with our friends. Every aspect of the trip was perfect. And through the eyes of our guests, we witnessed the gracious hospitality, stunning lodges, and audacious nature. Parents know that part of what is special about raising children is being able to view shared experiences new again through your child’s eyes. We are immensely lucky to know this wonder each time we return as hosts.
We returned to Kalamazoo and thanked Elvice for creating a custom itinerary with attention to details. Although our trip was over, we felt that our mission was incomplete. We began supporting charities by donating safaris in partnership with Elvice. Eventually, he encouraged us to become a more organized business partner. Within 18 months of our friends’ trip, KALAMAZOO SAFARI was born; providing customized crafted trips with midpoint pricing and the comfort of talking with an American firm. Travel to East Africa is a long, expensive, and expansive trip. Good travel opens minds to the world. Great travel changes hearts. And we are going for great.

OUR TANZANIAN PARTNERS & GUIDES KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY IS CURRENTLY COMPRISED OF ERFAN, ELVICE, TINNER, ME AND OUR FABULOUS GUIDES. DOUGLAS IS OUR MOUNTAIN GUIDE. Between Douglas, his brothers, and cousins, they have taken care of our hikers. His family has deep roots tying them to the mountain as he first hiked when he was very young alongside his father who just recently retired in his 70s. His father is best known for establishing the technical Umbwe Route. Proud Kilimanjaro experts, their knowledge includes mountain medicine, weather, equipment, human resilience, mountain cooking, conservation, and history. He and his family have traversed every path on Kilimanjaro.
SOLO IS A DEEPLY CARING SAFARI GUIDE whose love of the land and knowledge of safari has enriched our clientele’s experience. He’s even resourceful enough to secure a bottle of requested liquor in the middle of the Serengeti! And after just a little time spent in his Land Cruiser, it’ll become obvious why he has the nicknames Professor and Mayor; he knows everything and everybody. While he is an excellent guide, his explanation of charity has influenced our philanthropic philosophy. His work with Hope Ministries brings lifesaving and life improving surgeries to remote villages. But Solo understands limitations. When discussing need, he says be comfortable with what you can do and are willing to do because otherwise the need will swamp you. And that need is endless. IBRA HAS EARNED HIS NICKNAME “EAGLE EYE.” This seasoned professional guide is detailed, organized, and knows tracking. He understands animal behavior and sees animals where others do not. His skill has astounded me regularly. He is an asset on any safari and while his vision is among the best, it is his legendary patience that I most admire. His voice is deep and comforting, a bit like Morgan Freeman with an East African accent. Ibra’s a great guide and we recommend him regularly for families and photographers. OUR NEWEST GUIDE ABBY IS LASER FOCUSED on customer service and the safari experience. He will go the extra mile to ensure that you are comfortable, safe, and thoroughly enjoying your time in his country. He’s actually like the host at the best gathering you’ve ever attended; attentive, fun, and knowing that you are there for the experience.
12
August 2020
He exemplifies KALAMAZOO SAFARI’S “White Glove Service.” All guides are trained in safari mechanics, but some are like the MacGyver of the Serengeti. Did you know that super glue and sand will fix a radiator leak? Me neither. But it does.
OUR FAMILY, CAREERS & CHARITY The common themes weaving through our family, careers, and lives include creating experiences and empowering individuals and families to achieve their goals. As a seasoned financial planner and portfolio manager for Merrill Lynch, I’m committed to integrating financial planning with purposeful portfolio management. Your life goals are my goals. As a Safari and Kilimanjaro host and Adventure Itinerary crafter, I collaborate with our groups to craft itineraries focusing on their unique travel priorities. Your travel goal is our goal. There is no doubt that in both financial planning and travel, time and money are critically important. Erfan leverages his global reach to encourage exchange students from over 30 countries to attend high school in the United States to learn about American culture and to refine their English through Foreign Links Around the Globe (FLAG), headquartered in Kalamazoo. The idea behind exchange programs is learning about cultures through experiencing them. Diplomacy, after all, begins with family and is strongest person to person.
WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com
And as parents, we seek opportunities to diversify both our children’s experiences and cultural interactions to cultivate respect of differences and expand what they believe is possible.
Experiences leads to empowerment making access critically important. This mantra defines our life and philanthropic focus. We are committed to organizations that are committed to crafting experiences and therefore empowerment of our youth. Inner City Youth for Change is committed to equipping urban youth with tools to grow their leadership skills through service locally and abroad. Their goal is to change the world by breaking of generational poverty through experiential service, access, and empowerment. Separately, Girl Scouts provide access to a broad swath of opportunities and experiences. The diversity of experiences and access to adventure lead young women to knowing that they can do anything. In addition to these organizations, the YWCA serves vulnerable women around the world. Reducing vulnerability is the first step to being able to learn from positive experiences. Here we focus on strengthening the foundation.
SUCCESS LEADS TO MORE SUCCESS. LEARNING TO MORE LEARNING. KNOWLEDGE TO MORE KNOWLEDGE. SUCCESS IS THE LAYERING OF MANY SMALL VICTORIES AND EXPERIENCES. WHEN YOU KNOW MORE, YOU CAN DO MORE.
While charity begins at home, nothing tugs our heartstrings like the youth in Arusha, Tanzania. Fruitful Orphanage is one of many that house vulnerable youth who face existential struggles. Without Fruitful, they’d have no roof, no floor, no food, and no access to education. Fruitful is building a school with the intent to provide a better education than available through the government. African youth have demonstrated through enthusiasm the joy of being alive and appropriate enthusiasm for learning. They have enlightened me in the schoolyard, the forest, and the orphanage. I’ve learned that the most basic of human needs is to be seen, heard, and hugged.
WE INVITE YOU TO JOURNEY WITH US Through KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY, you can experience most adventures available in East Africa from Zambia to Zanzibar. Our heart, however, belongs in Tanzania.
When talking with future travelers, our focus is to hear their travel goals and do our best to craft an adventure that surpasses their expectations. While our itineraries have similar elements, they are not the same. We customize safari and hiking adventures with the intent to create memories for a lifetime. Afterall, once traveled, the journey never ends and you can revisit in your mind again and again. Join me on my hosted Kilimanjaro hike and/or safari next summer July 2021 or call us to craft your own safari or East African adventure!!
We’d be remiss if we failed to emphasize that KALAMAZOO SAFARI COMPANY is fiercely committed to biologic conservation and we support strong local causes. Southwest Michigan Conservancy does a remarkable job of preserving and cultivating nature and Binder Park Zoo sets the standard to which other accredited zoos should aspire. Their large exhibits provide enough space for their residents to stretch their legs and explore habitat. They also participate in crucially important breeding programs, which while I wish were unnecessary, they are. We believe in our local zoos because not everyone can fly to Tanzania, but everyone deserves to see a giraffe break out in gallop across a grassland and see lions laze in the heat.
And lastly, we are a supporter of the American Heart Association. First, because the cause is important to so many and it gave us a great platform for visibility at their annual Go Red event. However, our support ended up being Provident when Erfan survived a Widow Maker in 2019. Now, our support is tangible and from the heart.

A Holistic Approach
WHAT DO I RECOMMEND AS THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF SWMI HEALTH MATTERS? HERE’S MY TOP 10 LIST
1
Incorporate non-pharmacological/herbal interventions for pain like mindfulness practices.
2 Try massage therapy, which has shown
health benefits for cancer patients, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain conditions.
3 How flexible are you? Do you stretch
regularly? A yoga break in the middle of your day can ease tension, stiff muscles, and anxiety.
4 Consider Acupuncture, which has shown benefit for low-back pain, neck pain, arthritis, headaches, migraines, and even for stopping smoking.

he opioid crisis has been upstaged by COVID-19, but pain is always at the forefront of many people’s minds. Levels of anxiety and depression during this difficult time have been on the rise, and because these emotions share a common pathway with pain receptors, pain levels have also increased. Whether it is simple aches and pains, arthritis, migraines, bursitis, or fibromyalgia, many of us are searching for alternatives. For centuries in Europe a wildflower by the name Arnica montana was used to treat acne, bleeding, and pain. In traditional Native American medicine it is used for sore throats, toothaches, cuts, and bruises. Native American tribes also use white willow bark for fevers, headaches, and arthritis. Traditional Chinese medicine has also recommended willow bark for these conditions, and so did the ancient greeks and romans. The bark, leaves, and flowers contain especially high salicin levels, which is similar to the active ingredient in aspirin. Many natural pain remedies like arnica, willow bark, curcumin, ginger, frankincense, and cloves are available at natural health food stores, and major chain stores. Before you go out and purchase anything though, just a word (or two) of caution: A 2015 investigation by the New York State attorney general’s office into GNC, Target, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart supplements tested 24 products claiming to contain seven different types of herbal medication —

echinacea, garlic, gingko biloba, ginseng, saw palmetto, St. John’s wort, and valerian root. Most of them had either unrecognizable or different ingredients than were on the label. Several contained wheat and two contained beans without identifying them on the labels. Just this February the FDA advised against use of an over-the counter arthritis remedy called RMFLEX that was found to contain diclofenac, the generic form of Voltaren, which is similar to Motrin (ibuprofen) and Aleve (naproxen). “Natural” weight loss drugs have been found to contain prescription diet medications and laxatives. “Natural” sexual enhancement drugs have similarly been found to contain Viagra. Another thing to consider is, if you are taking aspirin, or blood thinners like coumadin, adding willow bark, turmeric, arnica, garlic and various other supplements increases your risk of bleeding.
SO, WHAT IS SAFE?
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has a web page called “About Herbs, Botanicals and Other Products.” This is a free database with useful information about thousands of supplements. There is also a free App version called About Herbs. US Pharmacopeia and ConsumerLab are two companies that test many foods & supplements for accuracy in labeling & safety. You can check their websites and check supplements for their seal of approval on the back.
stress level? Self-care can help to manage depression and anxiety and may help to lower your pain levels. Alcohol actually interferes with sleep, which makes it difficult for the normal repair process to occur. This can lead to more pain and soreness in the morning.
7 Always remember to hydrate. Make
sure your intake of water is adequate, especially during these hot summer days. Dehydration is a common cause of headaches and muscle stiffness.
8 Looking for alternative treatment options for specific conditions? Consider these two great resources: the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the Cochrane Library.
9 Do your own research, make a list, and
reach out to your primary care provider.
10 Reaching for anything in a pill form
should be done with caution, especially when it comes to pain. Even herbal remedies can cause allergic reactions, and interact with medications. At SWMI we are more than happy to go over your list, review the research, and incorporate your goals into a personalized wellness plan. We offer a free consult to get you started.

Susan M. Dennis, D.D.S. Susan Dennis, D.D.S., was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula. She earned her undergraduate degree at Michigan Technical University and went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor. Since beginning practice forty years ago, Dr. Dennis has pursued postdoctoral continuing education in advanced cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Dr. Dennis began preparing for dentistry when she was small. “My mom started me off sewing and embroidering when I was three, and with that handwork, I developed three dimensional concepts as well as hand-eye coordination very early in my life. I love art as well as science and math. My family includes mechanical engineers and teachers, so dentistry was a perfect fit for my upbringing and all of my loves and interests.” Dr. Dennis said she finds the motivation to come to work each day in giving people the smile of their dreams, whether it requires full-mouth reconstruction or just bleaching
their teeth to a beautiful, bright, youthful color. And mentoring her team to help them reach their highest potential is also a big part of what she loves about being a dentist. In describing her treatment philosophy, she said, “First of all, I love to look at each individual patient holistically by diagnosing their systemic health and how it relates to their periodontal health, dental health, occlusion or bite, and cosmetic or aesthetic condition. I’m looking for the oral-systemic health connections, with a focus on treating and preventing all dental disease. I combine all of these factors to determine what is best for that individual patient. I listen to each patient’s story and concerns,” she continued, “we codiagnose, and then I prepare a treatment plan based on their needs and wants. Dr. Dennis is happily married to her husband, Jim Murray, and together they have wonderful sons and daughters-in-law, and now eight beautiful grandchildren.

Advancing Lives Jacque Jennings-Carter
Anti-Aging Specialist • International Business Developer
Making a difference in the lives of others has always been important to me as has my health. My health has always been a top priority; no matter what. So, after leaving my 25-year corporate career in 1997, I began educating myself about alternative health and have been helping others for the past 23 years. One of my favorite topics to discuss with others is their immune system. Why? Because it is critical to long-term health. So that’s why I want to use this space to stress the importance of caring for our immune system. Every. Day. Not just when we start to feel ill. Here is a question for you: Except for the current COVID-19 issue, when was the last time you thought about your immune system? Sounds like a silly question, doesn’t it? After all, who really spends time thinking about their immune system? The answer is: People who want to age gracefully and stay as healthy as possible throughout their life. “The immune system is designed to defend the body against the bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that threaten to invade it. Weakness in the immune system opens the door and lets them in,” says Dr. Robertson D. Ward, M.D., FAACP, MC-FP. Please read that quote again and notice the word, viruses. Regardless of age, we become ill because our immune system is not at optimal/ peak performance or, as some say, “is compromised”. One of the most important things we can do to maintain the peak performance of our immune system is to be purposeful when it comes to caring for it. An obvious way to care for the immune system is something that our moms and dads taught us when we were young –
and one we are hearing a lot about lately wash our hands, properly and often. There are many other things we can do; too many to list them all here. But I want to share some simple action steps most everyone can implement easily: quality immune supplements and replenishments such as medicinal mushrooms and redox signaling molecules; healthy foods that build the immune system; drinking enough good, quality water; Liposomal Vitamin C; essential amino acids; getting enough restful sleep; and keeping a positive attitude as our mental health significantly affects our physical health. There are also many spices and herbs that are great for the immune system. A few for your grocery list are: thyme, cayenne pepper, ginger, licorice, turmeric; my personal favorites – cinnamon, garlic, rosemary and my absolute favorite, basil. I would love to work with you to help you keep your immune system at peak performance. My services are free except for the products I may recommend. I cannot say this enough - we cannot take our immune system for granted. If we truly want to maintain our health, our immune system needs us to be as diligent in protecting it as much as we need it to be diligent in protecting us. Each is dependent on the other. Jacque is as passionate about serving the community as she is about helping people achieve optimal health. A Life

The Fear of Communicating Breaking the Everlasting Pattern of Silence
The communication issues in our world have really reared their ugly face these last few months-revealing an incredibly toxic embracing of a “keep to yourself, don’t speak up” attitude in our society. One might argue, in a society where there are so many ways to communicate, how could we be suffering on the communication front? Despite the technological advancements in interacting with others digitally, beyond what we could dream even a decade or two ago, it appears communication is more than a lost art; it’s crippling us. More and more, we’re just plain afraid to communicate. Many are engulfed in well-earned, but misplaced, crippling anxiety to express themselves, creating undue pain and depression, among other health issues. For some, it’s even a threat to their livelihoods and well-being.
The outpouring on news and social media of the same issues further supports this observation. Risks of losing jobs and careers have been reconsidered and set aside in this uncertain time; individuals began speaking up on the rampant mistreatment of themselves and coworkers at organizations because of race, gender, beliefs, and more. They couldn’t speak up then; they didn’t feel it was safe. It still is not entirely safe, but the point is, they finally need to be heard.
Communication is more than a lost art; it’s crippling us.
Unfortunately, society’s current form here is an independent culture founded on the principle that we are this country of opportunity, including an unwritten understanding
24
August 2020
that supports keeping to oneself. The standard where one’s things, possessions, and status might be more symbolic and representative of your true self. Revealing feelings and thoughts are weaknesses. Mental health is an avoided issue.
This system and way of life has failed us all. The “open” culture so purported by many organizations and society are not always that open, especially if they don’t want to hear what you have to say. Sure, there are cases where one may be heard, and the issue is actually taken care of. Yet, many times, issues are swept under the rug. Ignored. Further allowed. Voices muted. The result: damage to your confidence, ego, and psyche. It adds to an already unhealthy culture we’ve created where speaking up, out, or talking about feelings are not appropriate in the workplace or home. And sure, generations grew up with this and integrated it rather seamlessly into their lives, but it has created so much pain, while further limiting our progress. How many issues today could have been fixed or bettered with proper communication and dialogue between each other? What could we have done if more were willing to speak up because they felt safe to speak up? How do we even begin to approach fixing this?
Years and decades of holding back, keeping quiet and not speaking up has bubbled. I’m proud people are speaking up, and some progress is being made now, but it should have happened years ago. We shouldn’t be this far behind. We should have already been working to empower each other’s voices. Enabling others to be heard. Sitting down and listening. In essence, we’ve all failed each other. But it’s not too late. We can fix this,
especially in our own lives and surrounding communities. As I take on the Editor position at Moxie Magazine starting in September, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure and open that door to you outside of these pages. I myself have taken a long road to get to the point where I can comfortably express myself being in a world that hasn’t exactly embraced it. I want to work to build all up to be comfortable in expression: To be able to speak up when things are not okay, share our triumphs and celebrations, and essentially, not be afraid. Let’s open up the conversation!
That being said, how can I best represent and get you to be more comfortable in your skin and with your voice? How do we get you on the road to feel empowered? In essence, the goal is to help communication and sharing feel like a relief rather than a burden. We need to open up communication and create the safe spaces we so sincerely lack. With that, I ask you to find your voice. Join me on this journey as we all find our voices together. There’s enough to fear in this world, and our feelings, thoughts, and wellbeing shouldn’t be one of them.
Stay safe out there. Cheers to this journey of ours in the making.

THE KALAMAZOO FOODIE
|
Culinary Adventures Around Southwest Michigan WITH THE KALAMAZOO FOODIE – RACHEL KIRTLEY
W
e all like a little adventure in our lives, but when it comes to trying new adventurous food, we are sometimes a little hesitant. Well, I am here to help bridge that foodie gap! I love watching cooking shows, and some of my favorites are Andrew Zimmerman and Guy Fieri. They search the world for some crazy outrageous food, and I’m here for it! Don’t worry, no crispy spiders, grubs, or other indigenous food was consumed, but I must say I have tried some exciting combinations over the last two weeks. To my surprise, they were all absolutely AMAZING! First, I had to see what the Pickle Pizza craze was all about! I chose to order from
Jaspare’s Pizza & Italian Bistro (locations across SWMI) in Vicksburg. It’s my favorite
location, and we are huge fans of their pizza, so I knew it would be a great fit! We tried pickle pizza three ways, you know, just to be sure! Pictured is their Garlic Aioli with cheese, pickle, and oregano. Ranch Base with minced garlic, cheese, pickle, and dill seasoning. Ranch Base with minced garlic, pickle, ham, and bacon with dill seasoning. (1) While they were all fabulous, there was a clear winner for us – the Garlic Aioli!
Let’s heat things up with Lafayette
Creamery (7933 S. 8th St., Kalamazoo) at their Texas Corners location. Lafayette Creamery ice cream is different because of its creaminess using 12% Milk Fat, density, and most of all, their unique flavors. The ingredients they use are always fresh and not artificial flavorings. Some of their seasonal flavors include Strawberries & Cream, Blueberry Cheesecake, and Raspberry Ricotta. Can you guess which one I tried? Caramel Habanero! (2) I was very apprehensive but very pleasantly surprised! Before you write off this flavor, hear me out. It tasted JUST like Caramel Ice Cream with a subtle heat at the end. I absolutely recommend trying a sample next time you are in! Next up is a favorite restaurant of mine located downtown Kalamazoo called 600 Kitchen and Bar (600 E Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo). They are always thinking of new creative dishes you won’t find anywhere else. When I saw their post about a Lobster BLT (3), I knew I just HAD to stop in to try it! Just when I didn’t think that a BLT could get any better than double the bacon, they went and added LOBSTER! Stacked super high on a brioche bun, they layer fresh greens, pork belly, and crisp tomatoes from Crisp Country Acres and top it off with lobster and fresh lemon aioli. If you aren’t into seafood, they have also added IMPOSSIBLE meat to the menu. If I wasn’t reading it right on the menu, I wouldn’t have known the difference. They offer it in two different dishes
The OG on the block, Olde Peninsula
Brewpub (200 E Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo) has been a staple in Kalamazoo for many, many years, and aside from their amazing craftbrewed beers, they put out some fabulous food. A lot of people rave about their Uber Goober Burger topped with bacon, peanut butter, and jalapenos, but anyone can do just that. I went for something a little more adventurous that you don’t often see on a menu - their Beer Town Sandwich (4): Pulled pork, house-made Black & Tan mac n’ cheese medallion, Michigan grown candied apples, and Togarashi Aioli all stacked on a sourdough bun. Talk about flavor town! The pulled pork was tender, the BBQ sauce was just the right amount, and all
Togarashi is a Japanese Seven Spice with cayenne, ginger, Szechuan pepper, Nori, orange peel, and black & white sesame seeds of the flavors balanced perfectly together. The Togarashi gave the sandwich an extra kick of flavor and subtle spice! 10/10 I would order this again! Moving on to the “new kid on the block,”
Load-A-Spud (2624 W Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo).

Some of you might be familiar with this small chain, but they recently opened a location right here in Kalamazoo just a short month or two ago. The concept is super fun, and I haven’t seen anything like it. You start off with a large baked potato, your choice of butter, and then choose your toppings! You can keep it simple with a traditional loaded baked potato – butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon, and chives, or try one of their crazy delicious combinations! They offer Broccoli and Cheese, Chili Potato with all of the fixings, Buffalo Chicken Potato, Taco Potato, Sloppy Joe Potato, Pizza Potato, Cheeseburger Potato, Gyro Potato, Pulled Pork, BLT, Veggie, BBQ or Jerk Chicken Potato. And last but certainly not least, I tried their Chicken and Shrimp Alfredo Potato! (5) Yes, there really is a potato under all of that deliciousness. I topped mine with Garlic Butter, Mozzarella, Alfredo Sauce, Broccoli, Tomato, Parmesan, Chicken, and Shrimp. I highly recommend them to anyone and cannot wait to go back to try another of their 20 different signature potatoes! You can also Load-A-Taco or Load-A-Salad if you want something lighter.
Next up, I finally visited Treat Street (3023 Oakland Dr, Kalamazoo)! Their amazing hot dogs and chocolate soda sounded like a fun treat! You can order a small or large hot dog, served up on a grilled hot dog bun made by McKenzie’s Bakery, and some fun toppings.
I thought it was fitting to get the Kalamazoo Dog (6) topped with secret sauce, green peppers, bacon, cheese. Other fun hot dog combinations there include the New Mexico Dog with a Sriracha Slaw, jalapenos, onions, and mustard. Houston Dog with Mac N Cheese, bacon, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce. Treat Street also offers Sleeping Bear ice cream and different flavored sodas made with their house syrup. I tried their Chocolate Soda – Chocolate syrup, sparkling water, and vanilla ice cream, and it was absolutely spectacular! Stop in to check out all of their fun hot dog combinations or cool off with some delicious ice cream and house-made caramels! “You gonna eat your tots?” said in my best Napoleon Dynamite voice. All jokes aside,
Presidential Brewing Company (8302 Portage Rd, Portage) knows what’s up! There
aren’t many places that offer tots, let alone loaded tots, and they have it perfected. Everything from your usual Loaded Tots with cheese, bacon, chives, and sour cream, to Cuban Tots with smoked pulled pork, ham, swiss, mustard, and pickles, to Rueben Tots loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss and thousand island dressing. I opted for the Farmhouse Tots (7) because let’s be honest; everything is better with a fried egg on top. They came loaded with cheddar cheese, bacon, ham, green onion, two fried eggs, and drizzled with garlic aioli! Holy deliciousness! Last but certainly not least, I absolutely adore
for breakfast and brunch! They have some fantastic dishes that are unique, fun, and most are big enough to share if you wanted to. I am a major fan of Cuban sandwiches, so when I saw that they had Cuban Benedict (8), I had to order it. Grilled English muffin halves topped with pickles, ham, shredded pork, melted swiss, two basted eggs, and a house-made Mojo aioli sauce and a drizzle of mustard. OH. MY. YUM. It also comes with your choice of potatoes, so naturally, I had to order their fantastic Onion and Cheddar Hash Browns. If eggs benny isn’t your style, their Twilight French toast is unlike anything I have tried. It is baked French bread soaked in crème brulee sauce, drizzled with more sauce and topped with fresh berries and a Raspberry Melba – delicious raspberry syrup-like sauce. Trust me, it’s incredible! ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Download Taylor Swift’s New Song for FREE! The following post appeared on my Facebook feed the other day, posted by an author who unabashedly leans left on the political spectrum… “Do you want to read The Room Where it Happened by John Bolton? Here it is in its entirety. Just don’t buy it and help to line Bolton’s pockets.” This post contained a PDF attachment of the digital version of the book in its entirety. In the spirit of enforcing copywrite laws, Facebook quickly removed the PDF attachment, leaving anyone who clicked on her post, with a message that the contents had been removed. While I understand the frustrations of this person, who feels that Bolton has no right to profit from his book due to his refusal to share this information during the Presidential Impeachment trial, I am perplexed with a writer championing the idea of giving away the intellectual property of an artist... even a politician. The issue of the unpaid artist is not a problem only with writers. This conundrum involves musicians, graphic designers, painters, photographers, and anyone providing a service that can easily be shared digitally. How often have we shared a photo that we retrieved from the World Wide Web, with little thought of
30
August 2020
where the source originated, and with even less regard to how this artist is losing profit from each click of the download button.
Perhaps, because we can. And is Taylor Swift really going to hurt from the one swipe of a song?
“I can’t afford to pay you, but you will receive so much publicity by donating your (Insert craft here),” is a phrase often echoed by wellmeaning people who think they are providing an opportunity. In fact, they are simply perpetuating the belief that artists should be sharing their craft for free, and that the next person is the one who should be paying for their services.
The answer is: Yes. The pirating of property from writers/artists/musicians is theft. It’s time we acknowledge this, and time to step up and pay for their services. As I embark on the publication of my first novel, I hope that literary enthusiasts will not share my property just because they may think that, “It’s just one copy.”
This challenge for all artists is only getting worse, with the Internet providing so many avenues for the pirating of digital copies of art. While we may justify our actions by telling ourselves that the person we are stealing from is rich and will never miss our lack of contribution for their product, the truth is, it is more challenging today for the writer/ artist/musician to profit from their craft due to the pirating of property that is done without thought or consequences.
Here’s a thought…
Why do we think it is OK to download the Taylor Swift song we lifted off of a questionable website?
Let’s think twice before hitting the download button on the internet when given the opportunity to receive the beauty of art for free. The writer/ artist/musician deserves our respect, and just as importantly, our payment for their services. Heidi McCrary is a writer and a regular contributor to Women’s LifeStyle. Escape Your HOUSE and Head OUTSIDE!
No matter the reason, everyone needs out of their house at some point. Whether it be to escape the kids or your significant other, we all need a break sometimes, and this summer, it has been hard to find ways to do that. Most of us enjoy indoor hobbies and social gatherings, but sometimes we forget about outdoor activities. This summer, here are some great ways to get back to nature either in your own company or the socially distanced companionship of others.
HIKING/WALKING
BIKING/BOARDING
SWIMMING
With the Kal-Haven trail and the multitude of trails in the Kalamazoo area, there is no shortage of hiking spots. Even if you are not a hiker, there are bikeways and sidewalks on most of the roads for pedestrian walkers. This is the easiest way to get that breath of fresh air we all need and to appreciate the little things we forget.
Pump up those tires and take that old bike out for a spin. This activity is a great way to get places fast and not overheat in the meantime. If you can’t find your tire pump or your tire pressure gets too low during your ride, the majority of parks in the city offer tire pumping commodities at the main entrances – so have no fear!
Did you know that walking is proven to boost your mood and your immune system? Even just walking or hiking for 15 minutes can have positive effects on your mind and body. Plus, just seeing plants and flowers is known to be a mood lifter. If you’re feeling the quarantine funk, this is a great way to take a quick, little refresher.
Not a biker? Long-boarding is another fun activity to enjoy outdoors, and with the asphalt trails, it is easy riding. Just don’t forget to learn how to stop first, especially before riding down that big hill you see that looks so tantalizing.
We are surrounded by five beautiful Great Lakes and an abundance of swimmable lakes in Michigan. This makes it a prime summer activity for all those beach bunnies and those who enjoy lake activities. Ramona Park is an excellent close-by option for those looking for the “beach scene” with its large expanse of beach, and for those willing to go a little further, South Haven is only a 30-minute drive to scenic Lake Michigan. Don’t want the crowds? Head to a state park with open beaches and thrive in your privacy.
KAYAKING
PICKLEBALL
OUTDOOR CLASSES AND GROUPS
Kayaking is a great lake activity for everyone, and it’s quite the work-out as well. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard at Ramona Beach or travel a bit further to the Fort Custer State Park in Augusta or Gun Lake. Watch the sun hit the lake and paddle yourself around the majestic beauty of the outdoors. Although this outdoor activity is a bit more rugged, it is definitely worth the experience. Who knows – maybe you’ll fall in love with the calmness and purchase your own for further adventure!
Purchase a racket and head to the courts for some pickleball. Most parks have pickleball and tennis courts, and it is an approved socially distanced activity. Parks are also equipped with basketball courts (hoops are removed right now for safety), softball, and soccer fields. Pickleball is similar to ping-pong, but the court is the table, and leagues are currently underway if you’d like to search something near you. It is easy to learn and gets that adrenaline pumping.
Many groups and classes have taken their teachings outside! This opens up the door for those looking to join social circles again. If you want to join a yoga class or attend that gardening group, look up the options in your local paper or website.
Staying safe doesn’t mean staying inside, so go out and enjoy it! 32

Good Listeners Establish These Habits You’ve been there … when you feel as if you’re in a conversation all by yourself and you aren’t being listened to. Now reverse this scenario. Is there a chance that you sometimes leave your partner in communication feeling alone and unheard?
To begin with, are you really trying to listen? Or are you just chattering away? It’s been said that you have “two ears and one mouth” for a reason! Learning to listen more than you speak can up your presence and generate success in communicating. There’s benefit for all if you ensure that you’re listening.
So how can you raise the level of your listening presence in your communication practices?
Be present. Tune in specifically with who you’re
listening to, shutting out any inner chatter or distractions that may be around you.
If you must speak, ask clarifying questions
(e.g., Do you mean that …?) If you’re trying to understand more, show empathy or gain trust,

be sure to invite further conversation with openminded questions that ask for more information.
Show your willingness and enthusiasm to listen through your nonverbal expressions.
Maintain culturally appropriate eye contact, nod your head with interest and understanding, and use smiles and head tilts at appropriate times.
Display supportive nonverbal body postures. These include facing your body — and leaning in — toward the individual you’re listening to, using open postures. Good listeners give focused attention to the person who is speaking — to their ideas, concerns or problems — and work to understand and provide support. THE POWER OF
Sometimes V
egan or Paleo. Runner or CrossFit. Sugar or no sugar. Is it possible to be all of these things at once? It might benefit you more than you think to consider losing your grip on labels rather than holding on to them so tightly. Living in the gray, or being a “sometimes” person, can help provide some flexibility to your life. I’m not suggesting you throw out your convictions or values. However, life changes constantly, and new opportunities present themselves to us all the time. If we are continually holding onto a way of doing things (i.e., what we eat or don’t eat, for example), we create unnecessary challenging situations for ourselves. In the same way, we can be prideful of a label - I’m a runner - it also puts the kibosh on trying something new - Can I also be a weightlifter? Here’s another example: I don’t eat meat. Is there a situation you might consider trying it? Maybe on vacation or a family recipe that’s made once a year for the holidays. Or maybe, just maybe, it sounds good every once in a while. Now, what do you do? You’ve said you don’t eat meat. Everyone around you knows that you don’t eat meat. How do you handle that situation? This is when sometimes, it can be incredibly powerful.

August 2020
The power behind SOMETIMES is actually permission. Permission to change your mind. Permission to try something new. Permission to step out of your label or box. Permission to take control of your life and choices as they happen. This can be a scary thing for people who haven’t learned to trust themselves. Rules can stop us from “messing up.” They create a space where we don’t have to think and instead just follow. They create a black and white world that, at first glance, seems comfortable and easy. However, we all know by now that the world is anything but black and white. It’s all the colors in between, and these need to be noticed, celebrated and honored. There is beauty in greeting decisions as they come instead of relying on a rule to tell us what we should or shouldn’t do. We miss out on a lot of life when we live by unchallenged rules around food, exercise, and other ways of living. It might seem like a tiny tweak to your vocabulary, but I encourage you to try out sometimes the next time someone puts you in
a box (I didn’t think you ate that food?) or you find yourself faced with an opportunity to step out of yours (Well, sometimes I do!). Keep in mind that permission doesn’t necessarily mean doing something. It can also mean choosing not to do something. This can be an even more powerful way to honor your needs. This might look like changing up your breakfast routine, not exercising on a day that you usually do, saying no to dessert because you don’t want it (and knowing that you could have it tomorrow or any other day). When we live by the power of sometimes, we get to let go. You might have a cookie today, or you might not - sometimes you eat cookies! You might exercise today, or you might not - sometimes, you exercise! You might write in your journal tonight, or you might not sometimes, you write in your journal! See how much more relaxed that is? You don’t have to be an all or nothing person. Here’s your permission to be a sometimes person. Depending on where you live, restrictions on social gatherings may become less strict in the coming weeks and months. However, many experts caution that care should still be exercised when groups of people gather.
important than the number of people in that family. For example, one family of six that has already been living in close quarters poses a lower risk than three couples living in separate houses. Also be mindful of your guests’ approach to prevention; if they’ve been less cautious than your family or vice versa, there’s room for conflict and anxiety.
After an extended period without social contact, it’s only natural to crave some interaction, and there’s evidence that doing so can be advantageous for your mental health. However, taking precautions to protect your physical health, along with your guests’, can make for a more enjoyable event.
Celebrate outdoors. Indoor event spaces naturally have less circulation, meaning potential airborne particles hang around longer. Planning your gathering outdoors helps ensure more free-moving fresh air and more space for guests to spread out and practice social distancing.

It may go against all your good hosting inclinations but hosting a bring-your-own party eliminates shared food and the risk of cross-contamination. You can provide
disposable table service (plates, silverware and napkins) and single-serve beverages, but skip the cooler everyone reaches into.
Provide ample, well-spaced seating.
Encourage guests to keep some distance from one another by creating comfy seating arrangements. You can take it a step farther by asking guests to bring their own chairs and directing each family to set up its space a reasonable distance from the next.
Make cleanliness a priority. Create
stations with hand sanitizer or wipes. You can also create a makeshift sink to minimize trips to the restroom indoors. Provide a spray bottle or bucket, soap and paper towels near the hose for quick clean-ups. Find more advice for navigating pandemic life at eLivingtoday.com.

Emotionally Preparing Your Children for
Back-to-School Season
Between sheltering-in-place, online learning and time away from friends, many children will need a little extra support as they head back to school this fall. Consider these tips from the experts at KinderCare to help you emotionally prepare your children to return to school with confidence, optimism and excitement.
academic officer for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Nothing builds a sense of community like personal contact with friends and teachers. That connection is essential in supporting a child’s growth and development.”
Set Expectations Address Your Feelings (& Theirs) About What to Expect Children often take cues about how to react Before the First Day from their parents. Think about what it takes for you to feel calm and prepared (or even excited) for the start of a new school year. That could mean talking with your child’s teacher or school about the safety precautions they’re taking so you can feel more at ease, taking a few minutes to establish a morning routine or stepping away from news that makes you anxious. Focus instead on the positive aspects of school, like the opportunity your child will have to learn, make friends, interact with others and grow into his or her own person. “Children need a sense of belonging, and school provides an important connection point for them,” said Dr. Elanna Yalow, chief
Some children may feel ready to go and eager to explore, while others can be more reserved or even fearful of new places, faces and routines. When your child knows what to expect, it can go a long way in soothing any worries he or she may have about leaving home and going to school.
It’s also important to respect your child’s growing independence and empower him or her to help others. As you explain safety precautions like covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing, or proper hand washing, emphasize how your child’s actions can help keep family, friends and teachers safe.
“Children may already be apprehensive about returning to school, let alone trying to cope with new safety practices,” said Dr. Joelle Simpson, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and medical director for emergency preparedness at Children’s National Hospital. “Explaining these precautions ahead of time can help

your children see them as part of the school day routine instead of something to fear. For parents, remember that while children can get sick from this virus, it occurs less frequently than in adults and at lower rates than the flu.”
Celebrate the Start of a New School Year
Try to plan a special activity or some extra family time the week before school starts and encourage your child to participate in the planning.
“Remember, children didn’t have time for a clean break and celebration at the end of the last school year, and this can help your child mentally adjust to a new routine and schedule,” Yalow said. Let your child know how proud you are to see him or her growing up, learning how to be a good friend and exploring and learning about the world. Be sure to talk with your child each school day – what was learned, funny things friends said, the things that seem little but are important to your child.
