NEW IN 2024:

Bottle filling stations coming to the course! Exciting news is rippling through our golf community as we gear up for the installation of water bottle filling stations on the Lake and Vineyard courses, following the success of the one at the river course bathroom. This forwardthinking initiative not only aims to provide golfers with convenient hydration but also contributes to our commitment to environmental sustainability. Bid farewell to costly water deliveries and embrace the era of reusable bottles on the golf course. It's time to dust off those Hydroflasks and Yetis—your trusted hydration companions for a round of golf!

GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK

BY RYAN BILL GENERAL MANAGER

The Need for Change:

While it may be tempting to have bottles of water delivered to all three courses, the economic and environmental toll is simply unsustainable. The cost of transportation and packaging adds up, not to mention the excessive waste generated by single-use plastic bottles. By introducing water bottle filling stations, our Club is taking a greener approach to hydration, encouraging members to be part of a solution that benefits both our wallets and the planet. The environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles is undeniable. By bringing your Hydroflasks and Yetis to the course, you're actively participating in reducing plastic waste and supporting a more sustainable golfing experience. As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of water bottle filling stations on the Lake and Vineyard courses, it's time for our golfing community to make a conscious shift toward reusable bottles. Bid farewell to wasteful water deliveries and embrace the cost-effective, environmentally-friendly option of bringing your Hydroflasks and Yetis to the course. Let's tee off with a commitment to sustainable hydration, one refill at a time. See you on the green with your trusted water companion!

BRING ON THE AMBASSADORS

New program seeks friendly, welcoming members What would a new year be without resolutions? I suppose just another day. Each year, I craft a Sales and Marketing Plan for the Club. The result is not just a blueprint for business growth – it's a roadmap for enhancing the member experience. At its core, the plan recognizes that a country club is more than just facilities and services; it's a community where friendships flourish and families come together. The plan prioritizes member engagement through diverse event programming, ensuring that each member, regardless of age or interest, finds a sense of belonging and enjoyment. Here’s where you come in:

The Ambassador Program

We’re excited to share with you a wonderful addition to our Woodbridge community – the introduction of our Ambassador Program. This program is a heartfelt initiative designed to make every new member feel right at home, right away. The program was recommended by the Membership Committee last November, and approved by the Board of Directors at its final 2023 meeting. We understand stepping into a new environment can be a bit daunting, and our aim is to ensure a warm and seamless transition into the vibrant Woodbridge lifestyle.

Our Ambassadors are fellow members, just like you, who are enthusiastic about our Club and eager to help new members explore all that Woodbridge has to offer. From enjoying a delightful lunch at our dining facilities, to engaging in a friendly game of tennis

We invite you to consider being a part of this enriching program. Your involvement could make a significant difference in someone’s experience at Woodbridge. For more details, please review the information online by scanning this QR code, and feel free to reach out to our membership office. Should you have any questions or thoughts, I am just an email or a phone call away. Thank you for being an integral part of what makes Woodbridge Golf & Country Club a special place. We look forward to your participation and support in welcoming our new family members.

or pickleball, our Ambassadors are there to guide and connect new members with the many facets of our Club that resonate with their interests. Upon joining Woodbridge, each new member will be thoughtfully paired with an Ambassador, taking into account their profile and interests. This pairing is the beginning of a beautiful journey; starting with an introductory call from the Ambassador, extending an

invitation to meet and mingle based on mutual convenience. The role of our Ambassadors extends beyond the initial welcome; they will be a continual source of support, ensuring our new members find their place and voice within our community, answering any questions and helping them to navigate their new surroundings.

The introduction of the Ambassador Program and a robust onboarding process for new members illustrates the Club's commitment to nurturing a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Technology is leveraged for effective communication and gathering feedback, ensuring that the club evolves in line with member needs and preferences. This plan, while ambitious in its sales targets, remains grounded in the ethos of creating a comfortable, friendly environment where every member feels valued and connected.

BY RYAN WILLIAMS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL

January’s Tip of the Month PUSH YOUR COMFORT ZONE IN 2024 If you will indulge me, I’d like to confide in you all some of the anxiety I had surrounding my wedding. To be clear, I had no doubts or worries about my lovely wife, Emily, but the formality and size of the ceremony was a source of stress in the months leading up

loved ones as we took our vows and kissed for the first time as a married couple. For an extended period of time after the wedding, I felt a calm confidence in every part of my life. It then occurred to me that without the fear associated with the wedding, the wonderful calm

played a tournament — particularly if that tournament was on a bigger stage than anything you’ve played in before. For example, I was very nervous for the Cal Cup Matches because I did not want to feel like my place on the team wasn’t justified. After the matches were done, however, it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders and it became much easier to enjoy the game and play freely immediately after. Those of you who have had a similar experience probably came to the same conclusion I did:

If you want to improve, you need to put yourself in uncomfortable situations.

to the big day. For some reason, the ceremony itself was the part I was most nervous about and I found myself wishing for that moment to come and go. Fast forward to the moment itself, I was shocked at how calm I felt walking with my mother to the altar and how much I enjoyed standing in front of all our

6

I was experiencing would never have materialized. In other words, pushing my comfort zone made me a better version of myself. Now, how can that be applied to our golf games? Maybe some of you have experienced a new calm while playing a casual round after having

The problem with being uncomfortable is just that, it’s hard. However, if you can push through that discomfort, there are a variety of ways to grow as a player:

1. Play with Better Players

As someone very guilty of playing fun golf with players of a lower skill level, the benefit of being around a higher standard of golf cannot be

listened recently to coach who has a 30-minute challenge to his students. The essence of the challenge is for the student to only hit 10 balls in 30 minutes (there is usually at least that much time between shots on the course). Moreover, the student has to change clubs and targets on each shot. Another example would be to play 9 holes up and down from random locations at the chipping green rather than simply repeating the same chip shot. This sort of practice may not be as comfortable but is much more similar to what you will experience on the course. It’s hard to believe that I’ll be completing my first calendar year here at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. Please allow me to say how much I’ve enjoyed getting to know all of you. Let’s make 2024 our best year of golf yet.

overstated. The quality of conversation about how shots are being played, the sense of purpose and commitment on each shot, the recognition of how to play shots from certain situations, the scoring ability from inside of 100 yards, the confidence, etc. are all things that can be contagious if we set aside our egos. Rather than feeling lesser than the better players, look at those rounds as a lesson. How much can you learn from situation?

2. Compete More

“There are two types of golf: casual and tournament, and the two have very little in common.” Ben Hogan said that because he knew the way he would feel in a tournament round was drastically different than in a casual round. More formal order of play, every putt hitting the bottom of the cup, or keeping a scorecard are all parts of tournaments that can be jarring for those not accustomed. It’s for this reason that touring professionals often live and play at places that include many of their peers. Whether it’s playing in NCGA events, our Club Championshps, or even if it’s just a $5 nassau, I would encourage all of you find ways to compete at the Club more regularly.

3. Introduce Discomfort in Your Practice

Most people use the practice range to warm up or as a source of confidence. They simply want to see the ball fly straight and be struck out of the middle of the face without much simulation to an actual target that may have trouble on one side. The shots are always hit from a perfect lie and are often using the same club for dozens of shots in a row. Again, this is “comfortable practice.” I

GETTING “TOURNAMENT READY” Looking ahead to 2024

On a side note: While you are out on your next round of golf, take a moment to look around while on the No. 6 Vineyard. You just may get a glimpse of a pair of Bald Eagles that have taken up residency and hopefully hatching their young this coming spring.

As we bid farewell to 2023, I am excited when looking ahead to the new year, here at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club. It has only been a mere three months since joining the team, but already it feels as if I have been here for years. With any change in management comes a bit of trepidation, but your golf course agronomy team has embraced the challenge and continues to work hard, consistently striving to improve work quality to enhance your golf experience.

As we raise our glasses to welcome the New Year, let us express our gratitude for the shared moments, the triumphs, and the challenges that have shaped our journey together. Woodbridge is not just a golf course; it is a community—a family bound by a love for the game and a commitment to creating lasting memories.

Behind the scenes, our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to maintain the standards that make Woodbridge unique. Our greenskeeping crew, led by our talented team of course maintenance professionals, are driven to ensure that every day is “tournament ready.” We are embracing innovative approaches to course management, utilizing the latest technologies to enhance the playability and sustainability of our course.

Thank you for being an integral part of the Woodbridge family. May the New Year bring you joy, success, and, of course, many more rounds of golf on our course.

Looking ahead to 2024, I am honored to celebrate with everyone a storied 100 years of golf history here at the Club.

Wishing you a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Sincerely, Lou Silveira Director of Agronomy Woodbridge Golf & Country Club

Last Month’s Question – It is virtually certain that a player’s tee shot is lost in a red penalty area. The player uses reasonable judgment to determine the estimated point where their original ball (ball A) last crossed the edge of the penalty area and drops a second ball (ball B) within two club-lengths of the reference point for the lateral relief option, not nearer the hole. After playing ball B, they find ball A outside the penalty area. What is the ruling?

Cart Policy

Golf carts must remain a minimum of 40 ft from tees and greens. Posted cart signs, stakes and ropes must also be observed. A member with Handicap Flag status is entitled to drive carts closer to tees and greens, but not less than 20 ft. During inclement weather or special course maintenance, the Course Superintendent may restrict all carts to Paths or Roughs only. Handicap Flag carts are included in temporary restrictions of Paths or Roughs only.

Golf Cart Care

For those who smoke while riding in a club-owned cart, the Club asks that they do not set a burning cigarette/ cigar anywhere on the golf cart at any time. Please set them on the ground while shots are played. A good number of burn marks have been noticed on club-owned carts, and the

Golf Rules

Answer – As the player used reasonable judgment in determining it was virtually certain that the tee shot was lost in a red penalty area, the player must continue play with ball B. The player incurs only the penalty of one stroke under penalty area relief. The original ball must be abandoned. This Month’s Question – A player’s ball is believed to be covered by sand to the extent that they cannot find it. The player may, without penalty, touch or move sand to find or identify the ball only if the ball is believed to lie in a bunker. True or False?

If you’re lucky, you might spot an American Bald Eagle or two around No. 6 Vineyard tee box! Eagles are majestic birds, symbolizing strength and freedom in the United States. Here are some fascinating facts about them:

National Symbol

The Bald Eagle was chosen as the emblem of the United States in 1782, symbolizing long life, great strength, and majestic looks.

Size & Wingspan

These birds are large raptors. Females, typically larger than males, can weigh up to 14 lbs, with a wingspan reaching up to 8 ft.

Diet

Bald Eagles are primarily fish eaters, skillfully snatching fish from the water with their sharp talons. They also eat small mammals, birds, and carrion.

Nesting Habits

They build some of the largest nests of any bird species, often reused and added to each year, measuring up to 10 ft across and weighing up to a ton.

Lifespan

In the wild, Bald Eagles can live up to 20 to 30 years. In captivity, they have been known to live even longer.

Conservation Success Story

Once endangered due to hunting, habitat destruction, and the effects of DDT, the Bald Eagle has made a remarkable recovery since the 1970s and was removed from the US federal government's list of endangered species in 2007.

Vision

Their eyesight is extremely sharp, enabling them to spot prey from a great distance. Their vision is estimated to be 4 to 8 times stronger than that of the average human.

Distribution & Habitat

Bald Eagles are found throughout North America, primarily near large bodies of open water with abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

Mating for Life

They are known to form lifelong pair bonds. If one of the pair dies, however, the survivor will accept a new mate. These remarkable birds not only represent the spirit of freedom and strength but also embody the success of wildlife conservation efforts.

EMBRACE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE Setting Fitness Goals for 2024 BY KRISTINE ROBERSON MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

As we step into 2024, it's an opportune time for reflection and setting new goals, especially in the realm of fitness and well-being. For many, especially those enjoying the vibrant community at the Club, adopting a healthier lifestyle is more than a resolution; it's a commitment to personal growth and community engagement.

Understanding Your "Why"

Before diving into specific goals, it's crucial to understand your motivation. Whether it's to enhance your golf swing, enjoy longer tennis matches, or simply keep up with your grandchildren, finding your "why" provides a foundation for your fitness journey.

MEET

TYLER

ALTNOW Tyler is 6 years old and goes to Joe Serna Charter School, where his favorite subject is math. He loves Mac & Cheese and going to In & Out. Other than tennis, he loves golf and snow skiing. His favorite thing is animals and a hamster takes first place. He loves going on vacation with his family and when he grows up he wants to be a house designer.

BONUS TIP: People who are successful in staying motivated toward their goals write their “why’s” down and keep it where they can see it when the going gets tough.

Setting SMART Goals

SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, TimeBound) goals are a reliable way to ensure your fitness objectives are clear and attainable. Here’s how you can apply this:

1. Specific: Instead of a vague goal such as "get fit," aim for something precise, such as improving your tennis serve or increasing your walking distance on the golf course. 2. Measurable: Track your progress. Use apps or a simple journal to record your activities. 3. Achievable: Set realistic goals. If you’re new to fitness, aiming for a marathon might be a stretch, but a 5K could be a great start. 4. Relevant: Align your goals with your interests. If you enjoy socializing, group fitness classes or club tournaments can be both fun and motivating. 5. Time-Bound: Set a deadline. Having a timeframe keeps you accountable and helps measure success.

JR TENNIS PLAYER OF THE MONTH 14

JANUARY 2024

BONUS TIP: Break your SMART Goals into quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily steps, and you’ll achieve them easily!

Embracing a Holistic Approach

Fitness isn't just about physical activity; it encompasses nutrition, mental health, and social connections. At Woodbridge, you can find various activities that cater to these aspects: - Physical: Golf, tennis, pickleball, swim, and fitness activities - Nutritional: Healthy dining options that don’t compromise on taste - Mental: Yoga classes or simply enjoying the serene environment - Social: Participating in Club events to build friendships and community bonds

Utilizing Club Resources

Leverage the resources at your Club. Our Golf Pros, Tennis Pros, Steven, our personal trainer, and our food & beverage staff can provide personalized advice and organize activities that align with your goals.

The Power of Community

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. You’re surrounded by peers with similar goals and challenges. Engaging with your community can provide motivation, support, and a sense of camaraderie.

Monitoring Progress & Flexibility

Track your progress but be flexible. Goals can evolve, and it’s important to adapt as needed. Celebrate small victories and don’t be too hard on yourself for any setbacks. Setting fitness goals for 2024 at Woodbridge is more than just a personal endeavor; it's a step toward enhancing the overall quality of life. By setting SMART goals, embracing a holistic approach, utilizing Club resources, and leaning on the power of community, you're well on your way to a healthier, happier year. Embrace this journey with enthusiasm and remember, every step you take is a stride toward a more active, connected, and fulfilling life at Woodbridge.

Commit & Hit in 2024 WOMEN’S GOLF UPDATE BY KIM DANGELO & LAURA REEVES 18-HOLE LADIES CO-CAPTAINS

Welcome to 2024, 18 Hole Ladies. December was a short month, but was packed with a lot of fun. We had our annual Christmas Party. A few ladies decorated the tables as they saw Christmas and a new tradition was started, and of course the party wouldn’t be complete without a song from Shirley Sing. We handed out the awards for 2023 — congratulations to all the winners. Our mostimproved golfer, Erin Devries, was unable to attend the party so a special Congratulations to her. We have had some great weather in December and were able to get out and play golf. As we move into 2024, Kim Dangelo and Laura Reeves will be the new Co-Captains. We liked to thank Kathi Holtzapple and Beth Handel for all their work last year. We have a lot of fun things planned this year and hope to see everyone out on the course. “COMMIT AND HIT”
