JUNE VENDOR INTERVIEW
with Bev Thorne of Mulch and More Crafts
by TeDi Jansen
Bev vends in the Indie dyer category and is from Elmira, MI
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS' GOAL?
Colors bring me joy! My goal is to provide makers with colorful roving and yarn in unique colors to make their projects unique too. And for those who are short on time I do offer a few completed items.
HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS GET STARTED?
I have been in business for decades, starting as Mulch and More, doing an organic herb garden at a local restaurant. In the early 1990's this started to evolve when I did a couple of local craft shows, demonstrating spinning and having a few items to sell. Over the years the "More" took over and my son and I did more shows as my day job permitted. I eventually added "Crafts" to my business name to keep from getting inquiries for mulch which I was no longer doing. To me Mulch and More still stands for using primarily renewable sources since the fiber animals and flax fibers can keep growing every year. In 2008 I ordered my first professional protein dyes after learning ways to use them from ladies in my local spinning guild! This allows me to play more with colors, sometimes with happy surprises!
HOW DID YOU LEARN YOUR CRAFT?
I learned Spinning from my Mom, I demonstrated spinning and weaving on my first job working in the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown New York, learning many more things from my coworkers during my three years there. And I have expanded my knowledge over the years from numerous friends and experiments. My family inspired me as a child, making a variety of things. My Dad taught me to knit. My Mom taught me sewing, embroidery and then when I was 16 to spin flax into linen on an antique wheel. My Grandmother inspired my love of color.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
IAs I am cutting back on the number of in person shows I do in a year, I plan on opening a small Studio in the yard where people can come by appointment. Over the years a business keeps evolving and I'm thankful for all the friends I have made over the years
WHAT MAKES WAFA SPECIAL FOR YOU?
WAFA has given me an expanded group of friends, taught me how (with the encouragement of family) to do a live on line and challenges me to learn new things. The support of the founder Ellen Zawada and all the hard-working volunteers is beyond wonderful.
WHAT FIBER ANIMALS DO YOU HAVE?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?
Currently I have no fiber animals although my son did raise some lambs years ago in 4-H and I was a caretaker for some Angora goats one summer. . As to favorite breeds there are so many, including crosses that I am still exploring, that I tend to like most of them for different reasons. We do have two inside black cats, which means I am well trained to keep yarn and fiber out of their reach.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BASE/ OR BLEND THAT YOU LIKE TO DYE?
I like a variety of fibers and blends and enjoy knitting and occasionally weaving with new ones to see how they work up. I often dye different blends in the same pot to see the different ways they take the dyes.

BOOK Club
Join Emily Ashton for an event/zoom meeting on July 17 at 3pm EST in the WAFA group. It’s free on Audible! Or you can acquire it from your regular book store(s) online or in person.
Vanishing Fleece by Clara Parkes is her memoir of acquiring a 600+ lb bale of wool and completing her own consumer testing of 4 different woolen mills. It not only encompasses the dilemma of a declining wool textile industry as a whole, but also investigates the different styles of textile mills present in the US, diving deeper into the types of products each can produce. As a new mill owner/operator, this book helped me understand why one mill may produce a type of yarn better than another, and why getting to know your own fleeces, desired products, and mills and their varying equipment is essential to this declining industry, and hopefully a resurrection. As I started my business, I questioned the sustainability of wool mercantile and how I could improve the industry on at least a cottage level.

A Lighter Touch of Wool is a onewoman business, owned and operated by Toni Unick Gruits. Toni has been an active member of WAFA for most of its 4-yr history as she cultivated a lifelong love of knitting and crocheting into an ever-growing fiber business. Processing most of her fiber by hand from raw fleece gives Toni a unique appreciation of the intricacies ofvarious breeds. Each breed brings something new to the table… color, staple length, softness, warmth, texture. Handcombing adds to the overall quality of her finished wool. She also dyes much of her fiber before incorporating it into beautiful batts and rolags, ready for all types of handspinning!
-
Toni is thrilled to be a vendor sharing her fiber with all the Tour de Fleece participants. Streaming LIVE on Sunday June 30th at 3:00 pm EST on the Wool and Fiber Arts FB page.
