Chylie Sweeney of Sheepishly Made & MCS Livestock
What is your business's mission or goal?
My goal is to share a love of wool and sheep while helping others learn about fiber art.
How did you learn your craft?
When and how did your business get started?
The wool side of my business started about four years ago when WAFA was created. I had been needle felting for a couple years and slowly starting using the wool from our sheep for spinning and more felting. In 2021, I joined WAFA as a vendor and have been in WAFA sales since. I've always created my own needle felting kits, and slowly started dyeing the wool from our sheep for handspinning.
Like many other crafts I have learned, I use videos to learn the basics. Then I experiment and play with the craft on my own. Needle felting in particular is a craft that you have to play with and learn some of the techniques by practicing.
Do you have fiber animals
On our farm, we have a variety of sheep. We crossbreed to create a nice dual-purpose lamb for meat and wool. The breeds on are farm include Dorset, Hampshire, Suffolk, Romney, and Bluefaced Leicester. Many of our ewes are 50% or more Dorset or Suffolk/Hampshire. About three years ago, we crossed in Bluefaced Leicester to increase wool quality. BFL added length, lessened the lanolin, and produced an overall cleaner fleece. We currently have around 80 ewes and breed to have lambs from midDecember through February.

If you raise or work with the breed/fiber of the month, tell us about your animals, their personalities and what it is like to work with the fiber. November is all about down breeds. Our down breeds include Dorset, Hampshire, and Suffolk. Down breed wool is great for socks, bedding, and everyday use. The raw wool is generally spongy. Our Dorset wool varies in crimp styles from a very tight crimp to more of a French fry look. The tight crimp is my favorite and tends to be cleaner. The dorsets or sheep that are mostly Dorset, tend to have the biggest personalities. There are always our special ones that end up with names and are the friendliest. "Princess" is the current favorite. She is 50% Dorset/50% Suffolk/Hampshire. She comes up for muzzle and chin scratches.
What makes WAFA special for you?
WAFA is a great community! I've met many people and made new friends all over the country. It has been a great place to explore new crafts and watch others learn all about wool and fiber arts.
