The Cotswold sheep originated in the Cotswold Hills of England, likely dating back over a thousand years. They are one of the oldest known sheep breeds. Cotswolds were primarily bred for their wool and meat. Their long, lustrous wool was highly prized in medieval England, making them an integral part of the country’s wool trade. While there isn't a specific individual credited with creating the breed, local farmers in the Cotswold region developed these sheep over time to be resilient to the area's environment.
Cotswold wool is characterized by its long, curly locks that are both shiny and strong. It is classified as a longwool breed, with fleece lengths reaching 8 to 12 inches. The wool is durable, has a high luster, and can range in color from white to shades of gray. Due to its structure,
it’s ideal for spinning into yarns that maintain their shape and strength over time. It's not as soft as some fine-wool breeds but is sought after for its durability and beautiful drape.
“Every domestic creature was bred for a specific purpose and the strength and luster of Cotswolds can't be achieved with down type meat breeds or medium grade white faced breeds. “ Robin Nistock, Nistock Farms
Cotswold sheep were first brought to the United States in the early 19th century, around the 1830s. They were introduced as part of the broader movement to improve wool production in the U.S., given the breed's wool quality and ability to thrive in various climates.
Today, Cotswold sheep are primarily raised for their wool and meat. Their wool is highly valued by hand-spinners, weavers, and knitters, while their meat is also sought after by heritage meat producers. Farmers might be interested in Cotswolds due to their easy going temperament, adaptability, and dual-purpose nature. Additionally, they are known to be hardy and capable of foraging in less-than-ideal pasture conditions, making them lowmaintenance in comparison to some modern breeds.
“I
can say that Cotswold is very desirable for the table. The flavor is reliably mild, including the mutton. If one is willing to wait for lambs to reach nearly a year of age you will have large cuts/portions but not lose the mild flavor. Also, the pelts are in huge demand.”
Robin Nistock, Nistock Farms
Cotswold wool is ideal for handspinning and creates a yarn with durability and luster. Its natural sheen adds a beautiful finish to hand-made items, and while it isn’t as soft as merino, it is well-suited for outer garments, rugs, and other projects where strength and longevity are prioritized. Cotswold wool also takes dye beautifully, making it a favorite among fiber artists.
In the U.S. the breed is currently classified as "threatened" by the Livestock Conservancy. Efforts are being made to preserve the genetics of the breed through dedicated conservation programs. This makes them a good choice for farmers and fiber enthusiasts who want to help preserve a piece of agricultural history.

The year is 1739. Eliza Lucas is sixteen years old when her father leaves her in charge of their family's three plantations in rural South Carolina and then proceeds to bleed the estates dry in pursuit of his military ambitions. Tensions with the British, and with the Spanish in Florida, just a short way down the coast, are rising, and slaves are starting to become restless.
