November Vendor Interview With Jim Echter of True Creations Wood Turning How and when did your business get started? Over 25 years ago. I've been making spindles and fiber tools for 18 years. Starting with a trip to the MD Sheep and Wool festival.
What is your business's goal? Making well balanced spindles for serious spinners.
How did you learn your craft? Self taught. Been turning wood on a lathe for over 48 years.
Was there someone who inspired you in your fiber arts journey? Stefania Isaacson was my spindle mentor. My wife, mother and sister all knitted. During the eyelash yarn scarf craze, they all wanted wooden size 17 needles.
Do you have a favorite wood to work with? Canarywood. Perfect drop spindle whorls.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about your business? What makes special for you?
WAFA
It saved my business during the pandemic as all the fiber festivals got shut down. I was fortunate to participate in the very first WAFA sale and have participated in almost all of them since.
I have demonstrated at 2 world Woodturning Symposiums. I do custom jobs for customers all over the country. My portable kick spindle (spinning wheel) customers are all over the world

wool! Everytime I offer the fiber in a sale,
First, let’s start with a bit of Rambouillet sheep
history
dating
back
a
couple
centuries. The Rambouillet breed was developed from Spain's Merino flocks, which produced the world's finest wool. The Spanish government coveted their Merino flocks, and exporting these sheep was forbidden. Fast forward a couple decades and the King of Spain decided to share his beautiful sheep and wool. He sent more than 350 Merinos to Rambouillet,France, to help the French improve their Merino flocks, Hence, Rambouillet became the name of the French Merinos descended from those sheep.
In the late 1800s, German shepherds used these new Rambouillet rams to improve their flocks. According to the Oklahoma State University website, most American Rambouillets can be traced to the German and French flocks. Currently, Rambouillets are spread across the United States. They are raised successfully in a variety of climate conditions from dry brush Texas to frigid Wisconsin/Minnesota.They thrive on the western range or midwestern pastures. Rambouillets are multipurpose sheep with lovely, long staple, up to 4 inches long & super soft wool. The fiber diameter ranges from 18.5-24.5 microns. Their fleece weighs between 8-18 pounds and yields 35-55% of their weight. The mature animals weigh between 250-300 pounds. Their shepherds market them for meat as well, providing a double income.
Rambouillet - The French Merino cont’d
Rambouillets are polled (without horns) or horned. Their horns are magnificent, creating an intimidatingly beautiful appearance. They are alert on the range which keeps them from becoming the predator's next meal. The ewes are attentive and protective. Nod your head if a Rambouillet ewe has stomped at you to get you to move away from her baby!! Our Rambouillets have served as mothers to our Natural Colored flock. We currently have Rambouillet / Columbia cross ewes and rams after losing our last pure Rambo just this fall. She was the matron of our flock and she and her best girls are now foundational ewes for our current flock. Their legacy lives on in our products. To learn more about the American Rambouillet Sheep Breeders Association search the following link. https://www.countrylovin.com/ARSBA/. You may be able to connect with a breeder local to you that would love to have you use their wool in your creations! Make sure you try out Rambouillet wool yarn or spinning/felting fiber this season.
Hello from Leaf Livestock Wool Co, a lamb and wool farm, located in Northwest Illinois. We raise beautiful Natural Colored Columbia /Rambouillet sheep, Polypays, Merinos, Columbias and now Targhees. I would love for everyone to enjoy the finest spinning fiber and yarn that I am privileged to grow and use for creating. The physical and emotional rewards that accompany raising sustainable lovely wool go far beyond the beauty of the final product!
