Page 34

AND SO THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. You are free-spirited. You don’t play by the rules. Your life is an adventure… why should your wedding be any different?

Welcome

A very warm welcome to Parsons Green and the surrounding areas from all of us at Hamptons.

You will be moving into one of the most highly regarded areas in Surrey. Desirable homes, tree lined avenues, diverse shops and restaurants and an eclectic, vibrant population.

Hamptons has been matching people with property, locally, nationally and internationally, since 1869.

We were pioneers, setting standards that few of our rivals could match and this hasn’t changed since.

Today, over 150 years since we first set up home in Pall Mall, with 15 decades of finding property and looking after people under our belt, our clients now consider us to be their, ‘home experts’.

Yours sincerely,

Parsons Green

Hamptons offers you a warm welcome to Parsons Green

Now in order to make your transition as smooth and hassle free as possible Hamptons have put together this great guide which will help you choose the best schools, learn a little about planning

and building control, read tips on where to shop, eat and lot’s more, all packed into one little guide with clickable links.

Perhaps most importantly we have researched some of the leading local professionals and experts who can help you add value and personalise your soon to be new home.

A little bit of history
“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

The word Fulham originates from Old English, with Fulla being a personal name, and hamm being land hemmed in by water or marsh, or a river-meadow. So Fulla’s hemmed-in land. It is spelled Fuleham in the 1066 Domesday Book. Parsons Green is a mainly residential district in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The Green itself, which is roughly triangular, is bounded on two of its three sides by the New King’s Road section of the King’s Road, A308 road and Parsons Green Lane. The wider neighbourhood is bounded by the Harwood and Wandsworth Bridge Roads, A217 road to the East and Munster Road to the West, while the Fulham Road, A3219 road may be said to define its northern boundary. Its southern boundary is less clearly defined as it merges quickly and imperceptibly with the Peterborough estate and Hurlingham.

Why move to Parsons Green?

Fulham is a highly coveted place to live though perhaps a little less famous than its neighbour Chelsea. Transport links are as good as anywhere in London with the advantage of being on the right side of London for connections to Heathrow and access to the river. Our properties

can compete with any real estate hot spot in the world although Relocating here is never a bad idea and if you’re lucky enough to be in the market for one of our properties moving in the right direction. That doesn’t mean that everything in Fulham is super exclusive, we have a strong and proud

working class including our own Premiership football team (soccer if you’re American) our own brewery supplying Londoners for over 200 year and some of the best pubs, independent shops and market stalls to give you a real community spirit.

Ideal living

Parsons Green was once home to aristocratic Londoners, but today the population skews toward professionals and families who are buying homes from the older population. It’s still upscale and is a prime choice for those who want some quiet while remaining somewhat close to the City. It offers a lot of activities and amenities but maintains a close-knit village atmosphere.

Housing in the area is mostly large properties that have been converted into smaller homes and apartments, but you will still find single-family terraces. These are mostly Victorian and Edwardian style homes. There is new development in the area as well that has created more modern housing options.

Parsons Green has a good selection of cafes and restaurants, including the iconic White Horse pub, which dates back centuries. Another popular spot is the California-inspired Hally’s, which has a healthy breakfast and brunch menu.

Parsons Green offers a lot to do. The nearby Bishop’s Park offers plenty of green space, athletic fields, and a man-made beach, the neighbhorhood hosts annual events that bring the community together, and a weekly farmers’ market is held each Sunday. It’s also home to the London Theatre Workshop, a small theater that puts on cabaret, comedy, and music shows. The Eel Brook Pub is also quite famous for its innovative shows. www.goodvibrations.com

Tell us about the background of 202 Design?

We founded 202 design in 2001 following many years working as cabinet designer-makers producing bespoke kitchens and fitted cabinetry for residential projects. The move into being involved on the design and client facing side came from a desire to be more creative focused but rooted in a knowledge and foundation of traditional cabinet making methods gained during our early years of being workshop based. As the company has grown and expanded over 22 years of trading, this is an approach still very much at the forefront of our design ethos in the company today – tailor made cabinetry, designed for the individual and combined with an approach mindful of traditional cabinet making methods and techniques.

Unlike many kitchen companies, 202 design does not have a house style. We always approach projects with a fresh and unique view and with the client’s requirements and the project aesthetic in mind. We are equally comfortable and experienced in proposing designs from the ultra sleek and contemporary through to the very ornate and traditional, depending on the brief.

What’s your customer process from receiving that initial enquiry?

Much of our work comes as a result of well established relationships with London’s leading design professionals, however we are also often approached by the property owner initially. One of the most important stages is the initial design consultation so we take great care to ensure that we understand the client’s requirements in detail – from the style of cooking, their current kitchen design, to the overarching project ‘look & feel’, function and aesthetic. Once a detailed brief is established, our design team start the process of developing an initial design proposal – often with several variations and options for consideration, before booking a presentation in our Earls Court showroom. We use a number of tools to present, including 3D model visualisation and ‘walk-though’, finish & material palettes and the working kitchen displays in our showroom.

Often our role as cabinetry and kitchen designers expands to helping a client with the wider interior design of the space. Again, this is unusual in the kitchen industry, however understanding the wider project aesthetic and working alongside the interior design team is a key part of delivering a considered and coherent project.

As a company, we have always strived to develop long standing relationships with our professional clients and this is reflected in the level of service and attention to detail offered. Every project we are fortunate enough to be involved with is unique, so we tailor our approach to suit the needs of the client. Customer service is always a priority, whether we are asked to design a bespoke kitchen, an entire joinery package or a one-off piece of furniture for a study. Some of our clients have been returning to 202 design since the early 2000’s and we are now working on their fifth or sixth property in over two decades. This is the level of service and product we strive to deliver – one that leads to clients wanting to engage our services again and again.

What characteristics set you apart from other practices?

Designing and supplying bespoke fitted cabinetry is only part of the job. Ensuring that the client and wider professional team feel that they are in safe hands during the entire process and that the project management and co-ordination side is given equal attention is also paramount. This is where our 22 years of experience in the high-end London residential market sets us aside from some of our competitors. For a leading interior designer, architect, or homeowner to feel comfortable handing over control of the joinery or bespoke kitchen package to us, there must be a high level of trust and we work tirelessly to ensure that this is earned on every project we are involved in. As 202 design is not a volume business, we are able to provide a unique and dedicated level of customer service we feel is not commonly found in the high end kitchen industry.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

As a team, we never fail to enjoy seeing our initial discussions, concepts and sketches come to life and become the showpiece and hub of a family home.

Meet Fulham kitchen designer Tim Higham

What does the Higham story look like so far?

We started in a small workshop in Hampshire in 2004, and quickly developed a strong reputation for quality cabinetry and very good customer service. Our team has grown steadily and now consists of a much bigger team of very skilled cabinet makers, still in Hampshire. Working alongside our equally experienced team of Kitchen Designers in our Studio in Parsons Green.

Talk us through the journey your customers go on.

The Kitchen is often the most used room in a home, so it is really important for us to understand what is needed from the space. We begin by asking clients to send us any details they might already have of their kitchen area; architect’s drawings, photos, rough dimensions, or estate agent’s floor plans!

We then discuss (in detail) their lifestyle and personal tastes so that we can get a really good understanding of the flow of the home. Finding a layout that really works is the key to a great kitchen. We are fully bespoke and by making each of our kitchens to order, we have complete creative freedom as well as the flexibility to add lots of personal details, making each of our kitchens unique.

After the initial meeting our designers will prepare a design and quotation. We use a mix of visuals to help clients understand their new space and what we are looking to achieve. We then work together with the client to refine and perfect the internal details of the cabinetry

to make sure all of their favourite appliances, spices, etc each have a home. Once the design is finalised, we will begin making. It takes us around 8 weeks to make a kitchen, which will then be fitted by our team of experienced installers, followed by worktops and a final touch up on site by our painter.

Which kitchen styles are particularly popular at the moment?

Colour! Blues, greens, and greys will always be classics, but we are seeing much more adventurous colour palettes coming through: mustard yellows, dusky pinks, and bold tile splashbacks. Pantries and fluted glass cupboards lend themselves well to splashes of internal colour — for those not quite brave enough to go the whole way.

What sets your kitchens apart?

We are not just joiners making great handcrafted cabinetry. We bring together award winning design expertise and exceptional craftsmanship to create kitchens that truly elevate the heart of the home in a unique and personal way. It is really important to me that our kitchens are made to last- we decided early on to invest in quality materials and manufacturing processes, rather than high street showroom space. We make our carcasses from veneered or painted Poplar ply as it is durable, moisture resistant and ideal for kitchens. Tulipwood is a naturally strong hardwood, perfect for our frames- making the most of its natural attributes .The use of Oak, Maple and Walnut in our doors, drawers, and cupboard internals, ultimately enables us to create a beautiful and stylish range of kitchen furniture that will last the test of time.

Why did you choose Parsons Green for your showroom?

I live here! I grew up in Hampshire, close to our workshop, and now live in Fulham with my family. Opening a studio nearby seemed like a natural move and it is a great location. Our projects cover all of London and Surrey, right down to the south coast- and from here we have easy access to all. It is also a great community feel and has a great network of local designers and creatives.

Welcome to Falcons School for Girls

Falcons is a nurturing independent school that offers pupils a wonderful sense of family and community. Children can join our co-ed nursery, Peregrines, from age 2 – 4, then from 4 years, girls smoothly transition into our Reception Class, to continue their Falcons journey with us until 11 years old in Year 6. Boys move on to neighbouring schools from 4 years.

We’re based in a leafy residential road between Barnes and Putney with an abundance of playground space where children can play games and sports and learn outside with their friends. Pupils particularly love the forest area, our Hedgehog Sanctuary and, of course, the pirate ship. Next year we will be celebrating 10 years here in Putney!

Children join us from Reception but also throughout different year groups and across the school year. We have a number of families who have relocated to London from international destinations.

Central to our ethos is encouraging all children to be academically ambitious. We want pupils to be bold, brave thinkers who embrace their natural curiosity and learn to take responsibility for their own learning.

We introduce children to a wide range of areas and help them expand their interests, whether they want to learn a new instrument, coding or British Sign Language, or take part in sporting tournaments.

We celebrate diversity and empower our pupils to see themeslves as responsible global citizens who are ready to make a difference in the world. When you visit, you will see happy, confident

children. That is because we believe passionately in the link between academic achievement and emotional wellbeing. By offering strong pastoral care, we help pupils to feel secure and able to take risks.

We are renowned for our outstanding pastoral care – as a small school community we have the considerable benefit of getting to know each child individually. Every member of our team knows every child here at the school and so we understand what makes your child unique and can adapt our approach and style to meet their needs.

We boast two large outdoor play areas – quite a novel benefit for a London school! Our popular large wooden pirate ship is a firm favourite across across all ages!

Pupils participate in a breadth of team sports and fixtures, including hockey, netball and cricket with many other local teams. We’re proud to have great partnerships with local Barnes Football Club and Fulham & Roehampton Cricket Club and the girls benefit from coaching sessions from both of the clubs. We regularly use the facilities of nearby Barn Elms for events such as Sports Day and Granard School’s pool for swimming.

Our outstanding track record of 11+ results is proof of the positive student experience we deliver. We nurture each individual pupil and prepare them to go on to the school that’s the best possible fit for their talents and ambitions.

In terms of Destination Schools, our girls move on to a breadth of London and beyond, Day and Boarding Schools, from those specialising in the Performing Arts to the more traditional Academic. We pride ourselves in the number of Scholarships achieved each year including Academic, Music and Sport.

For our full list of latest Destination School offers see here.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family to visit us soon!

Interview with Kido School

Tell us a little of the history of your nursery Kido is by parents, for parents - we are owned and operated by a group of parents from all over the world. We were set up in response to our founders’ struggles as young parents in different countries searching for high quality early years education. Since our first nursery school opened in 2014 we have been obsessed with two things: improving learning outcomes for children, and our service to parents.

What would you say is special about Kido

There are many special elements to Kido that we are very proud of. Our international early years curriculum makes Kido settings truly unique. Children benefit from the best of curriculums drawn together from all over the world. Including extra curricular elements such as Spanish and French, dedicated STEM classes, Kido Explorer Days - a project based learning experience, along with an international Zoom club to share cultural experiences and celebrations across three continents.

Are there any facilities you are particularly proud of?

We take a great deal of time and effort to plan and create classroom environments that support children’s learning. We believe children learn best in natural environments that are calming

and allow children to focus on the activities and experiences available to them. We ensure our indoor and outdoor play areas give children a space where they can run, jump, climb and fulfill all of their developing physical needs. Our nurseries are equipped with natural wooden toys and furniture which echoes our commitment to sustainability and reflects on our Reggio Emilia and Montessori inspired curriculum. We work with various suppliers globally to ensure the children have toys and equipment to aid their natural exploration of the wonderful topics on offer in each classroom. This means you’ll find STEM laboratories in our settings, complete with lab coats and safety glasses, we have home corners that reflect different cultures through the clothing, books and food on offer, and you’ll always find a wonderfully presented, clean and welcoming nursery at any Kido threshold you cross.

Kido’s school readiness program is run each year for our cohort of school leavers. We cover all of the required academic topics, Maths, Phonics, Reading and Literacy while also incorporating a huge focus on our children’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing and development. We want to ensure everyone leaves Kido with the utmost confidence and enthusiasm to embark on school. We are very proud that all children across Kido are accepted into their families school of choice.

What makes you different to any other setting

We believe that our Kido teachers are what make our settings different from others. We are very passionate about our commitment to professional development for all of our teachers.

We have our own, inhouse dedicated training team that works closely with each nursery to ensure high quality experiences for all. Teachers in early years have a huge impact on children’s first learning experiences and we take our responsibility of supporting our educators to be the very best that they can be very seriously. We set out to provide each child with a lifelong love of learning and a wonderful experience in their first educational setting, this wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic teams of teachers.

Planning & Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

www.lbhf.gov.uk/planning/planningapplications

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
