HISTORY

Marlborough can be found in Wiltshire, sitting next to the river Kennet. It’s a historic market town that was once controlled by William the Conqueror but was later almost totally destroyed in 1653 by a great fire. There are many sites of historic interest in the surrounding areas, including the World Heritage site of Stonehenge, the stone circle at Avebury and the extraordinary prehistoric white horse hill figures.

Marlborough is a historic market town situated in the beautiful county of Wiltshire on the old coaching route midway between London and Bath. Marlborough offers a wide variety of boutique shops and restaurants. About me Hi, I’m Tim. If you’re struggling to get planning permission, I can help you find a path through the planning fog. I’m an independent planning consultant, based in Wiltshire and working across the West of England. I’ve spent much of my career with local councils and have lived in the area for many years. I believe in creating high-quality homes and places and in demystifying the planning process to help you achieve your property vision.

How I help The planning system is complicated and getting permission can often feel frustrating. I’m here to help smooth the process for you. FavouritesI’ve worked on many projects over the years – everything from residential extensions to larger new build developments. In recent years, I’ve overseen a successful appeal for two houses in the North Wessex Downs AONB, provided planning advice on a listed farmhouse and buildings in North Wiltshire, and submitted a planning application to convert a historic building to residential use in Swindon. I particularly enjoy working on historic buildings, bringing them back to life, but also love working on modern developments.

Interview with creative garden designer Christine

Whatley

Christine, please tell us a little about your company and how you started?

I’ve always been fascinated with plants - from a child I’ve grown them, searched for them in the wild, photographed them, and tended them in a nursery. After a career in consultancy, I then combined my mathematical background with my love of plants and retrained as a garden designer, where I use my creative, analytical and communication skills to create inspired and practical designs.

What would be the first steps when challenged with a generous size garden but low on character or features?

The first stage is always to understand the client’s needs and tastes, but my designs will also be individual to the site. Every site, even the most blank of canvases, has something to work withthe lie of the land, views, sunlight, the buildings, trees, even something less attractive that needs screening - it all goes into the melting pot where, working from the house outwards, I create a unique garden that works in its setting and for the clients.

Does it matter what time of the year you get started with your outside space?

The most important thing to understand is that gardens are not instant nor static. They change over time and with the seasons. That is what makes them such amazing spaces. The whole process from initial survey to completed garden is not quick, so it does pay to plan ahead.

What type of projects give you the most satisfaction?

I enjoy being closely involved with my clients and the landscape team, right from the initial survey and design brief, throughout the build to the planting and even beyond. It is incredibly satisfying to see my clients’ delight in their new garden, and to stay involved with them as their garden progresses.

Would you say you prefer a blank canvas or working with clients specific ideas to creating their dream space?

Some clients have a clear idea of styles they like or features they want to include in the garden, others just know their garden doesn’t currently work for them. Some need the whole garden to be redesigned, others will want just part reimagined in a way that works with the rest of the garden. It is the variety of design briefs that make this such an interesting career.
