Attention all Public School Teachers! Is it time to renew your Virginia State Licensure for Teaching? Did you know that the Workhouse Arts Center has been helping teachers earn continuing education units (CEU) toward relicensure since we opened our doors in 2008? Many of the weekly classes the Workhouse has to offer are geared toward the intermediate to advanced student and art educator. We understand how difficult it can be to find an inexpensive way to renew, so the Workhouse extends a 20% discount on all weekly class registrations for public school teachers. Let us help you earn points the fun, artistic way by enrolling in a weekly Workhouse Arts Center class today! Rules: 1) As a weekly class meets its minimum enrollment of four students, the discount of 20% off tuition can be awarded. 2) The class must be a weekly class. This discount does not apply to workshops. 3) The teacher must provide a scanned copy of their teacher ID card upon registration in order to qualify for the discount. 4) Any teacher wishing to use a Workhouse Arts Center class as professional development points toward recertification must submit a letter of intent to the Workhouse Arts Center Education Department one week prior to the start of the class and have prior approval of his/her school administrator. 5) Upon completion of the course, a letter will be drafted explaining professional development goals met with a receipt of registration and mailed to the teacher. It is then the teacher’s responsibility to submit the letter to their school administrator for acceptance.

“Bumpers”Western Martial Arts
All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Facilitator: Brad Waller Instructors: Paul Volpe, Steve Hick, Joshua Badgley, James Clark “Bumpers” at Workhouse is a simple gathering of friends getting together to explore the Art of the Sword. This studio class is designed to provide an opportunity for master teachers, researchers, and movement artists to get together and share in the wealth and depth of knowledge that is found in the historical traditions and fighting techniques from all around the world. Our hope is to create a forum in which we can develop our skills in the Art of the Sword, with the simple ambition, to come together once a week and learn from one another. “Bumpers” is a physical journey that will create an opportunity to explore historical material on the highest possible level with the most experienced scholars and professionals of our craft. Develop in each other a comprehensive understanding of our research, techniques and process. Explore methods of learning that can bring to the studio participants a better understanding of the work. The idea is to create a kind of “collective educational format” that will allow the studio to serve the project participants through the entire year, in a journey of personal growth in scholarship, technique and process. 3 rd Southeast Asian Ceramics Symposium The Workhouse Arts Center, located in Lorton, VA has the privilege and honor to host “Earth and Fire” the 3rd Southeast Asian Ceramics Symposium (formerly Festival) in October 2014. In Southeast Asia, ceramics has always played an important role in the functions of daily life. Pottery has been present in every aspect of the Southeast Asian civilization’s culture. It was often used to study the way people lived, and was found anywhere from bowls on the dinner table to icons for religious practices. Even today, the tradition continues. Over the past few years ceramic artists from the nine nations that comprise the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) [Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam] have gathered to celebrate and share their art with the world. The event will feature the works of 35 leading ceramics artists from the nine nations. The pieces will be on exhibit in the Vulcan Gallery from September 12 to October 19, 2014. The culmination of the exhibit will be a three-day symposium on October 10-12, 2014, where 12 (of the 35 exhibiting) ceramic artists will each demonstrate their techniques and present lectures on their works and the ceramics scene in their respective countries.

Stained Glass All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Kim Joy This is a traditional method of making windows, lamps, boxes and more by creating a pattern (or using a pre-made pattern), selecting colored and textured glass to go in each piece of your pattern, cutting and fitting the glass to your pattern and joining the glass using copper foil and solder. A beginning student will come away with all the skills to create simple windows on their own and a finished project. (Meets in W-7, 716) Fall Quarter (9 Weeks) Winter Quarter (9 Weeks) Mon Sept 15 (10am-1pm) Mon Jan 5 (10am-1pm) Wed Sept 17 (7-10pm) Wed Jan 7 (7-10pm) Tuition: $240 Materials estimated $100-$300 dependent on project chosen.
Kiln Casting All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Robert Kincheloe In this class, 3-D objects are created in glass by making a mold of an object (either one you bring or one you create from clay) that you will melt glass into, creating a glass replica of the original. Many glass artists prefer this method as it allows them the ability to create a sculpture in glass and add other materials to the glass to realize their design. A beginning student will experience several techniques used to make the mold and create pieces using these techniques. (Meets in W-7, 716) Fall Quarter (9 weeks) Winter Quarter (9 Weeks) Mon Sept 15 (7-10pm) Mon Jan 5 (7-10pm) Tuition: $240 Materials: $180, added at time of registration.
Students and the general public can easily find and purchase any of their needed glass in our retail glass store in Building W-7. See page 39 for details! Glass materials fee: Unless otherwise noted, a glass materials fee covers the use of all community accessible equipment and basic materials.
All glass students should wear natural fiber clothing, long pants and closed-toed shoes. Students are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses.

We will use various forms of glass (sheet glass, frit, stringers, and dichroic glass) while learning how to use glass tools. Students will learn design concepts and how to choose which glass technique will best accomplish their goal. Focus will be on process and exploring all the possibilities that can be achieved with glass. Intermediate classes are great for students who already possess basic knowledge of fusing glass and use of tools. We will explore more detailed and complex fusing concepts, i.e., making your own sheet glass and components, reactives, and kiln carving. In addition, this class is designed to encourage students to perfect their sense of craftsmanship. Experimentation and thinking outside the box will be strongly encouraged. (Meets in W-7, 716)

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It is a technique of decorative art or interior decoration. Most mosaics are made of small, flat, roughly square, pieces of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae; but mosaics may also be made of small rounded pieces of stone, and called “pebble” mosaics. Students will design and create a fine art mosaic piece using a variety of materials such as glass, ceramic, stone, shell, metal and polymer. Students are encouraged to bring in findings and materials that they might want to incorporate into works and favorite tools they might want to use. Planning and design including selection of materials, methods and tools will be covered. Several projects will be offered, or students may bring in a project of their choice with instructor’s approval. Introduction to Fine Art Photography Beginners to Intermediates, Adults Only Instructor: Craig Rudlin Fine art photography is distinct from other genres of photography such as journalistic, “street “documentary, wedding/portrait, in that its goal is to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer that is dependent on the viewer’s experiences. The processing will utilize Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and the NIK software plugins. The students will learn why and how to shoot in raw mode, and how to process the raw “data” via these software programs. In addition, each session will include either an onsite photo shoot or a homework assignment that will generate the images to be discussed and processed at the next session. Students must have a personal DSLR camera and tripod and should bring a lunch. (Meets in W-10)
