Attn: all Public School Teachers!
Is it time to renew your Virginia State Licensure for Teaching? Did you know that the Workhouse Arts Center has been helping teachers earn continuing education units (CEU) toward relicensure since we opened our doors in 2008? Many of the weekly classes the Workhouse has to offer are geared toward the intermediate to advanced student and art educator. We understand how difficult it can be to find an inexpensive way to renew, so the Workhouse extends a 20% discount on all weekly class registrations for public school teachers. Let us help you earn points the fun, artistic way by enrolling in a weekly Workhouse Arts Center class today! Rules: 1) As a weekly class meets its minimum enrollment of four students, the discount of 20% off tuition can be awarded. 2) The class must be a weekly class. This discount does not apply to workshops. 3) The teacher must provide a scanned copy of their teacher ID card upon registration in order to qualify for the discount. 4) Any teacher wishing to use a Workhouse Arts Center class as professional development points toward recertification must submit a letter of intent to the Workhouse Arts Center Education Department one week prior to the start of the class and have prior approval of his/her school administrator. 5) Upon completion of the course, a letter will be drafted explaining professional development goals met with a receipt of registration and mailed to the teacher. It is then the teacher’s responsibility to submit the letter to their school administrator for acceptance.

Your Artist Within
Paint Your Power
You don’t have to be creative to get the most out of this session. In fact, the less creative you think you are, the more this session will help you tap into the creativity you desire. You will learn to understand the right and left brain paradigm by experiencing first hand results of working out your creative muscle. We will explore the eight sections of the book, The Artist Within, A Guide to Becoming Creatively Fit, organized by principles of design. Participants will share their insight into the art of life, as revealed in the pages they read each week. Through a series of defined creative exercises and discussion you can develop “magical” mental abilities and embrace our role as the artist of our lives. You can create change in our world – all by simply creating on paper. Students must purchase the book “The Artist Within” by Whitney Ferre for the exercises and to follow along during class.
Since the beginning of time, humans have used art as a means of expression. This workshop is about giving you the tools to step into your full creative potential—helping to find Your Artist Within, who wants to help you create the life of your dreams. When you create, you tune out the voice that whispers, “You could never do that” and tap into the voice that says, “Who are you NOT to be living that life?!” When you accept your role as BOTH the art and the artist, you open yourself up to a new way of living. Join us as we explore fun right brain exercises and meditative practices to open up your creative spark. You will create your own inspirational painting—a portal of sacred energy—using symbols, color & intention. Whether you feel you’ve misplaced your artistic inspiration long ago or you are creative on a daily basis, you will find new ways to tap into your creativity and capacity for joy. Finding your own creative voice helps you vibrate with joyful energy or create change in any part of your life. Art making is a way of expressing what’s inside – art is how the soul speaks to you. Come listen, create, and paint your power! If students wish to purchase the painting supplies from instructor, fee will be $30/student. Supplies consist of a16”x20” canvas, set of acrylic paints, & a small set of acrylic brushes.

Visiting Artist: Portrait Drawing with Nicholas Raynolds NEW!
All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Nicholas Raynolds paints in the classic tradition of the French Academy. He believes that students should work from life as much as possible to tap in fully to the ‘language of the eye’. Nicholas is recognized as a versatile and accomplished talent in both drawing and painting, working successfully in multiple genres including the portrait and figure, landscape, interiors and still-life. Join Nick this November for a very special three day experience while working from a life model focusing on drawing the human portrait. The workshop kicks off Friday night with a special two hour slide lecture and welcome to Nick as he talks about his studies and art work and answers any questions students might have about the workshop. The hands-on workshop then begins Saturday morning where students will learn a number of conceptual and practical tools by which to better solve the observational and practical problems associated with naturalistically depicting the human face and head. While seeking to grasp the character of the sitter, students will develop drawings from the block-in stage through to the modeling and completion of forms. Recognizing stages in the drawing’s development will serve as the discussion point of various topics including gesture, proportion and likeness, the anatomy of light and shadow, structural and physiological anatomy and value, line and mass.

Photography Introduction to Fine Art Photography Beginner - Intermediate, Adults Only Instructor: Craig Rudlin Fine art photography is distinct from other genres of photography such as journalistic, “street“ documentary, wedding/portrait because it’s goal is to evoke an emotional reaction from the viewer which is dependent on the viewer’s experiences. This course explores what these elements are and how to use them to create images that engage and challenge the viewer. This class is comprised of a seminar-style discussion illustrated with examples from the instructor, the participants and “live” processing of the participants’ raw captures into final images. The processing will use Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and the NIK software plugins. The students will learn why and how to shoot in raw mode, and how to process the raw “data” via these software programs. In addition, each session will include either an onsite photo shoot or a homework assignment that will generate the images to be discussed and processed at the next session. Students must have a personal DSLR camera and tripod and should bring a lunch.

Opening the Photographer’s Eye Beginners - Intermediates, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Mark Gilvey The exposure triangle (how shutter speed, aperture, and ISO work together) is the first step in a photographer’s journey. The next steps require the photographer to take control of the elements they see in the viewfinder and post-process those images to make sure the desired outcome is reached. Students will learn how to develop an eye for composition using placement, line, color, and texture. In doing so they can assess a scene and previsualize how to compose an image before looking through the viewfinder. Students will then learn how to bring out elements in their images that will help them communicate what they saw in the viewfinder. Of special note: This class will go through the fundamentals of composition but is open to intermediate photographers as a refresher course. It is assumed that students already understand how shutter speed, aperture, and ISO work together. The Instructor will provide both in-class and out of class assignments. Good composition is an element whether you are using a camera on Manual or Automatic so there will not be a “manual” requirement but it is preferred. Adobe Photoshop Light room will be used exclusively. Photographers who only use Photoshop Elements are encouraged to take this program as an introduction to Lightroom.

Fused Glass Jewelry
Try me! – Focus on Beadmaking
All skill levels, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Leah Powell
All skill levels, Young Adults & Adults Instructor: Kathryn Lagassey
This is a great way to experiment with “fused glass” (the process of layering two or more pieces of glass and then firing in a kiln). We will discuss the secrets to creating that expensive jewelry you see in the stores and at craft shows. Our focus will be on five different ways to hang jewelry (including an “invisible” one that hides your chain/rope), as well as creativity. You’ll experiment with all kinds of glass -- dichroic and iridized glass(es), frits, stringers and metals. So, feel free to bring your ideas to class or to work from our project ideas. These pieces make great gifts!
On the fence as to whether you want to take a weekly bead-making class? Then ponder no further....take a Try Me! Class focused on beadmaking and see if it whets your appetite. Our Instructor is an experienced professional artist and can give you a better sense about what is involved in this technique and medium. Students will be contacted when artwork is ready for pick-up.

Many glass artists prefer this method as it allows them the ability to create a sculpture in glass and add other materials to the glass to realize their design. A beginning student will experience several techniques used to make the mold and create pieces using these techniques.

Corina Tettinger Master Class to Master Glass All Skill Levels, Adults Sept 12-14 & 15-17, 2015 (Two 3-day workshops) 10am-4pm each day, Meets in W-7, 711
Corina has been teaching this class for over 10 years now, and the feedback from students is still the same “I wish I had taken this class earlier…” This class includes everything that is considered a “basic technique” – but by “basic” Corina doesn’t mean “beginner” but rather means“at the base of every good bead”. The techniques covered during this course will include shaping beads, dot application and manipulation (poking, twisting, raking, masking, etc.), stringer control (an all-time favorite), encasing, how to make twisties and simple and complex cane.
GLASS WorkhouseArts.org
Each workshop is different, since the students decide what they want to focus on. Corina’s goal is that each student goes home with more confidence, more heat control, more attention to detail and a bucket full of new ideas. For Corina, it is more important that students master generally useful techniques, rather than “copy” a number of bead designs.
Tuition: $425 per person/workshop or $825 for both workshops! Materials included. Students are encouraged to bring a bag lunch, a sketchbook, their own tools and any images for inspiration. Tools can also be provided.
Stephanie Sersich Spiny Knotted Bracelets
Intermediate - Advanced, Adults February 20-21 & 22-23 (Two 2-day workshops) 10am-4pm each day, Meets in W-7, 711 Corina Tettinger
In this class, students will use floss and waxed linen to bind beads and other treasures into a bracelet. They will also learn to make some of the glass beads for the bracelet. On the first day, Stephanie will demonstrate how she makes her buttons and special dangly beads for the sides, as well a small flower and disc beads to incorporate into the bracelet. On day two, Stephanie will demonstrate her signature knotting technique to assemble the beads into a fabulous bracelet. As time permits, Stephanie will show how to make more jewelry, such as earrings and pendants. The materials and methods provide an opportunity for self-expression—there is no pattern to follow and the beads can vary in size, color and shape. Each student in the class will create their own unique bracelet. The unusual materials and larger bead sizes (a nice change from the intricate “seed bead” work) level the playing field for advanced beginners and long-time beaders as well. Students will make their beads on day one and finish the bracelet(s) on day two.

Animal & Creature Inspired Imagery in Clay
Saggar Firing with Aluminum Foil All Skill Levels Instructor: Paul Lyon
Participants will explore and translate animal and creature imagery as a means of expression in clay. Discussion and activity will include looking at cultural, historical and personal associations with creatures, and how these associations might be adapted or incorporated into personal and unique works. We will work hands-on with various forming methods and embellishments to construct a small animal-inspired work. Finishes or treatments that might be applied post-workshop will be discussed. Clay will be provided, and participants should bring basic tools for clay-working.
Explore, discuss and try a variety of possibilities using aluminum foil as a saggar in this alternative firing method. Discussion will cover the types of clay used as well as throwing, trimming and burnishing. We will prepare the pieces using a variety of materials (salt, sugar, copper wire, horsehair, miracle grow, toilet paper and other strange things) and discuss different firing temps. Clean up and finishing of work is a vital part of this process. Participants should bring small to medium size work which has been burnished and bisque fired. (Low temp bisque will retain the smooth burnished surface better, such as cone 015.) All necessary materials will be supplied, except pots to be fired. Participants should come prepared with closed-toed shoes, respirator, natural cotton clothing, a bag lunch and a sketchbook to take notes, etc. Pieces will be ready to take home when done.

Throwing off the hump (or mound) is a time saving method when making quantities of small pots, bowls, specialty pieces and addons, etc. You start with a big mound of clay and don’t even have to center the whole mound, just the amount you want to use on top. It is a production technique that many potters master and frequently use to quickly make many pieces. Clay (up to 10 pounds) will be provided for use. Students may purchase more clay, if necessary.

Australian Calisthenics Calisthenics is an artistic sport unique to Australia. It combines dance, gymnastics, singing, apparatus manipulation and ballet, and is performed in theatres. It involves a team of pupils learning routines choreographed to music – each of about three to four minutes in duration – and presenting those routines at concerts. Pupils learn approximately six routines concurrently throughout a year and this is where the diversity of the sport is seen. Calisthenics can be categorised as both a sport and an art. As a sport, it encourages physical development, coordination, self-discipline and team spirit. As an art, it develops an appreciation of music and rhythm, the beauty of line and the excitement of presenting on stage.

Visiting Artist: Portrait Drawing with Nicholas Raynolds NEW!
All Skill Levels, Young Adults & Adults Nicholas Raynolds paints in the classic tradition of the French Academy. He believes that students should work from life as much as possible in order to tap in fully to the ‘language of the eye’. Nicholas is recognized as a versatile and accomplished talent in both drawing and painting, working successfully in multiple genres including the portrait and figure, landscape, interiors and still-life. Nicholas studied at the renowned Water Street Atelier in Brooklyn, NY and has taught at the Art Students League and the National Academy in NY; the Gage Academy in Seattle and the Penland School of Crafts in NC. He has exhibited extensively both nationally and abroad and his work can be found in many permanent and private collections including the Forbes Collection, NY; the TIA Collection and the Arkansas Art Center Museum in Little Rock, AR. Nicholas’ work has appeared in numerous books and magazines including Juliette Aristides’ books: “Lessons in Classical Drawing” and “Classical Painting Atelier”, as well as in American Artist’s ‘Drawing’ magazine; ‘The Artist’s’ and ‘Art Collector’ magazines; the French art magazine ‘Pratique des Art’ and his painting appears on the cover of John Updike’s novel ‘Seek My Face’.
Slide Lecture: Fri Nov 6, (6-8pm, W-16, Vulcan Muse) Workshop: Sat Nov 7 - Sun Nov 8 (10am-4pm each day) Tuition: $280 | Register online at reservations.workhousearts.org
