Teen Yoga This yoga class will focus on safely learning yogic poses (asanas) as well as breathing exercises to help with focus and relaxation. Modern day adolescence and teenage years are filled with competitive activities and the pressures of academic achievement. Yoga is a wonderful way for teens to focus on their growing bodies and to quiet the mind from the constant chatter of peers and media. Yoga postures integrate the mind and body through synchronized breath and movement. On top of physical benefits of improving strength, flexibility, and balance, yoga provides the tools to help improve our focus and regulate our response to stress. Studies have shown a connection between children and teens who practice yoga and their reduction in stress levels. This in turn aids their ability to navigate the social and academic hurdles they encounter during this phase of development with more ease and grace. Sundays, 10:00am

Jack Troy – The Expressive Pot SPRING 2018
Exhibit: March 21–April 8 Exhibit Reception/Artist Talk: April 6, 7pm–9pm All Skill Levels Demo Workshop: April 7–8, 10am–4pm each day Cost: $260 Workshop participants should plan to participate in group discussions, bring a sketchbook and any photographs for reference during discussion, and bring a bag lunch each day. Demonstrations will emphasize the evolution of personal forms - pots with a unique identity. Using the cup as a takeoff point, Jack will demonstrate several phases of his own development as a potter, showing how the cup has evolved to reflect his concern for functional and aesthetic values as well as different modes of firing. Some of the points he will illustrate include surface decoration, tactile qualities, inside-outside considerations, spontaneity and control, as well as focusing attention on the cup as a whole: lip, foot, body, handle. Faceting, carving, paddling, and stamping will alter thrown cups. His current teabowls start on the wheel and are modified by a variety of means. which he will explain. Two slide talks on contemporary Japanese tea bowls will follow, one per day. Jack will demonstrate a simple means of extending the scale of work, and will apply a variety of altering techniques to thrown forms to keep them from becoming generic pots as well as making one of his original designs - a squirrel-proof bird-feeder – if there is interest.
14
Slides will trace the influence of traditional pottery and the natural world as sources of inspiration in his work. Jack Troy's anecdotal style of information-sharing covers a wide range of
topics, including, technical and aesthetic issues in ceramics, personal goals, sources of inspiration, and the dilemma of being a literate potter while knowing that most of the world's best pots were made by people who couldn't read, write, or do glaze calculation. He welcomes questions and dialogue. Participants are invited to click their way to Jack’s “20 Questions” on his website, jacktroy.net. “Our aim is to encounter ideas that will help extend our present knowledge of potting so that we can make informed choices about our work, and put life into the clay we use. Participants are invited to bring to the workshop two clay objects from which they have learned something, for an informal discussion.”
Tim See – Industrial Pourers FALL 2018

Covering processes like throwing creatively, spout pulling and complicated surface treatments, nothing will be left out. The discussion will focus on the whys of what he does as much as the how. Join us for an entertaining and educational workshop with Tim See. Photography for the True Beginner!
Beginner Skill Level: Young Adults and Adults Instructor: George Brown Is your fancy digital camera still on auto, just like it was the day you took it out of the box? Light & the Photographer
All Skill Levels: Young Adults and Adults Instructor: George E. Brown It is important to remember that light is the primary working tool of any photographer. Photographers are constantly talking about the quality of light (both good and bad). Light can be hard or soft, direct or indirect, natural or flash, and come from different angles. As you start to learn the art of photography, you will undoubtedly hear photographers refer to using “good light” in their photos. So what is good light? There is no one good answer because it’s subjective. Good Light is just the right amount, quality, color, and angle of light a photographer needs to produce a desired image.
This class focuses on how to improve your photography by control lighting using modifiers, multiple light sources and then how to light different types of subjects. 1st Class One light and modifiers, painting with light 2nd Class Multiple lights and modifiers 3rd Class Lighting glass subjects 4th Class Lighting metal 5th Class Lighting portraits Spring Quarter: 5 weeks Saturday April 7, 3pm–5pm Summer Quarter: 5 weeks Saturday July 14, 3pm–5pm Tuition: $150 Lab Fee: $30 added at time of registration Location: W-3, 304

Make Your Mark
Studio Painting
Beginner to Intermediate Skill Levels: Young Adults and Adults Instructor: Julia Malakoff Your adventure begins with unbounded exploration as you discover and develop your own unique artistic voice. We'll stimulate and invigorate your passion and imagination—initially and primarily relying on intuition to guide the creative process. Each lesson focuses on different media and techniques. We'll drip paints, rip papers, make marks, paint with our hands and loosen our minds as we play with color, line, shape and texture. This artistic process is fueled by both spontaneity and serendipity. It consists of layering paints, papers, patterns and textures, each step suggesting the next to create a visual story. Through this process, you'll learn how to create visual stories which are uniquely your own. We'll then focus on fine-tuning and enhancing the impact of your work through the application of the traditional elements of composition. Each class will begin with a quick journal warm-up—using markers and watercolors, doodling and drawing to get your creativity flowing. Lessons will end with a cool down—a class critique, reflections, and review of the day’s lesson. You'll also be responsible for journaling your visual observations throughout the week by using your cell phone camera or pen and pencil. These captured moments will serve as inspiration for the next week’s lesson. Spring Quarter: 8 weeks Monday April 2, 10am–1pm Tuition: $235, supply list provided at time of registration Location: W-6, 607

WORKSHOPS Paint your Pet!
All Skill Levels: Young Adults and Adults Instructor: Kathy Strauss Dog, cat, rabbit, mouse, lizard, or even a chicken—everyone loves their pet! Many people would love the idea of having a portrait of their pet on canvas. Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford the painter’s sitting fees. But what if you were able to do the painting yourself? But I have no artistic talent, you say? Fear not as we'll guide you through a grid process and basic acrylic painting techniques. From your basic sketch, to the final brushstroke, you'll create your pet painting masterpiece! The key to making this class successful is having a good, clear, up-close, well-lit photo of your pet. It can’t be stressed enough! We need to be able to see the eyes, nose, body and other features clearly. Also, a more traditional pet-type pose is better than some wacky, weird angle. If you don’t have any good, recent photos, then grab a camera or someone’s phone and take some new ones! Remember, if you’re photo isn’t good, your painting won’t be either. Spring Quarter: One day Session A: Saturday April 21, 10am–4pm Session B: Saturday May 19, 10am–4pm Summer Quarter: One day Saturday June 23, 10am–4pm Tuition: $135 Materials Fee: $30 added at time of registration. Send a few shots to the instructor beforehand if you want, and we’ll choose the best one that will work nicely on the canvas. Location: W-6, 607

Paul will help you reach the next level of artistic confidence and ability as he guides you through a painting, illustrating the principles of design, color, value, composition and the mechanics of watercolor. Through informal lectures, discussions, demonstrations and critiques you'll refine your personal painting style. Prepared to be entertained, make new friends and find logical and creative answers to your watercolor problems. Paul will demonstrate the versatility of watercolor paint. You'll learn how to work in thin layers of washes to build up luminous colors. He'll lead you step-by-step with demonstrations of the painting process.
