Attention all Public School Teachers! Is it time to renew your Virginia State Licensure for Teaching? Did you know that the Workhouse Arts Center has been helping teachers earn continuing education units (CEU) towards relicensure since we opened our doors in 2008? Many of the weekly classes the Workhouse has to offer are geared toward the intermediate to advanced student and art educator. We understand how difficult it can be to find an inexpensive way to renew so from now on the Workhouse would like to extend a 20% discount on all weekly class registrations for public school teachers. Let us help you earn points the fun, artistic way by enrolling in a weekly Workhouse Arts Center class today! Rules: 1) As a weekly class meets its minimum enrollment of four students, the discount of 20% off tuition can be awarded. 2) The class must be a weekly class. This discount will not apply to workshops. 3) The teacher must provide a scanned copy of their teacher ID card upon registration in order to qualify for the discount. 4) Any teacher wishing to use a Workhouse Arts Center class as professional development points towards recertification must submit a letter of intent to the Workhouse Arts Center Education Department one week prior to the start of the class and have prior approval of their school administrator. 5) Upon completion of the course, a letter will be drafted explaining professional development goals met with a receipt of registration and mailed to the teacher. The processing will utilize Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and the NIK software plugins. VMFA Lecture Series Fee: $10 ($5 discount price for Artists at the Workhouse and Friends of the Workhouse)

Why is that Art?

Emily Smith Executive Director, 1708 Gallery, Richmond, VA Looking at modern art can often be challenging. It always raises questions, even amongst the most knowledgeable viewers: What is an abstract painting "of"? How do you determine if something is "good"? A close look at the history of modern art, dating from roughly 1870 through 1950, demonstrates that the changes that occurred, chiefly that art became more abstract, were not arbitrary but rather developed along deliberate paths. Artists were not working in a vacuum but were responding to changes in technology like the development of photography, cultural moments like the industrial revolution and WWI and WWII, as well as the artists and movements that preceded them. Using works from VMFA's collection, this chronological telling of important moments in modern art provides the context in which to answer questions like those above. (Meets in W-3 Theatre)

Those Gaudy Ancients: Exploring the Color of Antiquity

Dr. Peter Schertz Jack and Mary Ann Frable Curator of Ancient Art, VMFA We encounter ancient sculptures thousands of years after they were created and can readily imagine the complete form of these statues, despite missing parts and broken bits. But it is much harder to imagine something we hardly ever glimpse — color! Ancient statues were painted, often with bright, gaudy pigments. This lecture explores the color of ancient statues and how modern researchers are discovering surviving traces of those colors in order to recreate sculpture’s original appearance.

Berthe Morisot and the Impressionist Image of Women Jeffery Allison Paul Mellon Collection Educator and Statewide Programs Coordinator, VMFA

"It is important to express oneself … provided the feelings are real and are taken from your own experience." – Berthe Morisot Berthe Morisot was a woman of extraordinary talents who carved a career for herself out of the male-dominated art world of 19th century Paris. She was one of only a few women who exhibited with both the Paris Salon and the highly influential and innovative Impressionists. Morisot’s art depicts the world of the bourgeoisie: their clothes, their lifestyle, their surroundings, and their relationships. Through her unusual talent, the modern viewer can see the essence of quotidian life for the rising middle class of 19th century Paris.

Fused Glass Similar to stained glass except the brilliant pieces of colored glass are joined by firing them in a kiln until they melt together. Additionally, “frit” (crushed glass) can be fused onto the piece to give texture and pattern to the piece. Once fused, the panel can be slumped into or over a mold to create dishes, platters, light fixtures and bowls or can be left flat. Beginning students will create a dish and/or a panel. This will prepare them to learn more intricate fusing techniques in the intermediate classes. (Meets in W-7, 716)

The Workhouse Arts Center is pleased to offer classes for students wishing to explore the Art of Movement! Featuring a variety of traditional Mind and Body offerings! Mind-body medicine uses the power of thoughts and emotions to influence physical health. As Hippocrates once wrote, "The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well." This is mind-body medicine in a nutshell. Today, there is renewed interest in age old traditions such as yoga and meditation. No longer viewed with suspicion, mind-body programs are now established at prestigious medical schools in the United States and around the world.

Art of Movement

Classes in this program follow continuous eight week sessions, and most classes may be joined at any time- no need to wait for the next session to begin! “Bumpers” at the Workhouse is a simple gathering of friends getting together to explore the Art of the Sword. This studio class is designed to provide an opportunity for Master Teachers, Researchers, and Movement Artists to get together and share in the wealth and depth of knowledge that is found in the historical traditions and fighting techniques from all around the world. Our hope is to create a forum in which we can develop our skills in the Art of the Sword, with the simple ambition, to come together once a week and learn from one another. “Bumpers” is a physical journey that will create an opportunity to explore historical material on the highest possible level with the most experienced scholars and professionals of our craft. Develop in each other a comprehensive understanding of our research, techniques and process. Explore methods of learning that can bring to the studio participants a better understanding of the work. The idea is to create a kind of “collective educational format” that will allow the studio to serve the project participants through the entire year, in a journey of personal growth in scholarship, technique and process.
