Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

4 GA BUYER EUROPE DECEMBER 2021

Now we’re in December we have to remember that winter presents many risks that aren’t present in summer, so it’s important to look after your aircraft (and yourself and any passengers!), putting safety first. This includes maintenance/general care; pre-flight planning and preparation; and conduct of the flight. It is important that your aircraft has the required features (e.g. FIKI kit) if you intend to fly IFR where you could be exposed to an icing environment — and don’t forget to ensure your pilot licences are current!

Advice

“The lack of these things could render you uninsured should you have an incident or accident,” says Chris Varley, chairman of Export & General Aviation Insurance. “Also, if your aircraft is poorly maintained and in poor condition, this could be picked up by loss adjusters following any claim.”

58 Gal. in EC135 Full.

In winter, aeroplanes are more prone to weather-related issues especially if left outside — and even more so if not being flown much. “They’ll be more prone to maintenance issues, even routine things like tyres going flat,” says Varley. “Insurance may not pay out for a poorly maintained aircraft,” he warns.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

Diamond Aircraft

Announces All-Electric Trainer Diamond Aircraft is developing an all-electric training aircraft, the eDA40, and has chosen Electric Power Systems’ EPiC battery technology and accompanying Ecosystem. Since 2011 Diamond Aircraft has been researching and developing electric and hybrid electric platform solutions. At the Paris Air Show in 2011, in co-operation with Siemens, the Austrian manufacturer introduced the DA36 E-Star, the world’s first aircraft with a serial hybrid-electric drive system based on the HK36 motor glider. Two years later, the DA36 E-Star 2, was presented at the 2013 Paris Air Show, with improved performance and increased payload. Further research of electric and hybrid solutions led to additional collaboration with Siemens and the introduction of the next milestone, called ‘HEMEP’ – the world’s first hybrid-electric multiengine aircraft with lower fuel consumption (higher efficiency) and decreased noise pollution.

Going All-electric After extensive research and numerous flight-test hours on electric and hybrid platforms, Diamond Aircraft says it is “now positioned to offer an all-electric solution to the General Aviation market – the eDA40.” The company has partnered with battery technology company Electric Power Systems (www.epsenergy.com), integrating the company’s EPiC Ecosystem into the eDA40, which is a derivative of the existing and certified DA40 platform.

(First row f.l.t.r.) Michael Armstrong, PhD (CTO, EPS), Michael Duffy (VP of Product, EPS), Steven Hall (Director of Product Management, EPS) (Second row f.l.t.r.) Kevin Spencer (VP of Programs, EPS), Robert Kremnitzer (Head of Design Organization, Diamond Aircraft Austria), Nathan Millecam (CEO, EPS), Scott McFadzean, (CEO, Diamond Aircraft Canada), Li (Michael) Yu (COO, Diamond Aircraft Austria)

The Electric Power Systems Battery Module will be equipped with a DC fast-charging system, capable of turning around a depleted aircraft in less than 20 minutes. Batteries will be installed in a customdesigned belly pod situated between the engine and the forward bulkhead. The aircraft will feature the latest Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit and will have several avionics add-ons available. Total flight time is expected to be up to 90 minutes as the battery technologies evolve. The eDA40 is expected to reduce operating costs by up to 40 percent compared to traditional piston aircraft. “The eDA40 will be the first EASA/FAA Part 23 certified electric airplane with DC fast charging and specifically tailored to the flight training market,” said Liqun (Frank) Zhang, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Austria. “Making flying as eco-friendly as possible has always been at the core of Diamond Aircraft with our fuelefficient jet-fuel powered aircraft producing less CO2 and noise emissions compared to conventional piston aircraft engines. Therefore, we are more than proud to underline this commitment with the all-electric eDA40, a sustainable solution for the general aviation of tomorrow.” “We are excited to announce our new partnership with

Electric Power Systems,” said Scott McFadzean, chief executive officer of Diamond Aircraft Industries Canada. “The eDA40 with its proven airframe, the quick recharge capability and the low operating cost will be an excellent aircraft for the flight training market and solidifies Diamond’s position as a global leader in General Aviation.” “We are thrilled to team with Diamond on this important project for the aviation industry,” said Nathan Millecam, Chief Executive Officer of Electric Power Systems. “Training aircraft set the stage for demonstrating that electric aircraft can meet the demands of high-paced, high-volume operations at a reduced cost basis. Combining EPS’ battery and electric propulsion know-how with a globally recognised leader in advanced general aviation design and manufacturing enables the eDA40 to be one of the most notable electric aircraft projects in the world.”

Flight Training The eDA40 is targeted at flight training customers looking for an excellent electric circuit trainer based on the industry’s leading training aircraft, the DA40. It is the perfect complement to an existing Diamond fleet to keep standardisation high. Initial flights of the eDA40 are scheduled for Q2 2022. Certification is expected in 2023.

The Future of GA is Here! Despite many undeniable problems, general aviation is resilient because it is broad-based. This has also been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic where, after a significant drop in flying hours and aircraft sales last year, the restart is clearly noticeable again. General aviation weathered the global COVID-19 crisis better than was initially feared. Travel restrictions after the outbreak of the pandemic first prevented cross-border flights, then there were complete lockdowns in various regions, which also hit General Aviation and condemned it to inactivity. After airlines worldwide shut down large parts of their fleets and began to lay off their flying personnel, flight schools also lost their customers as the prospect of finding a cockpit job after the crisis looked uncertain.

Sales Rebounding Even though the crisis is not yet over, not only has the flying activity of general aviation recovered significantly worldwide, but sales of piston-engined aircraft should — all being well — also start to return to pre-crisis levels. This is reflected in the General Aviation Manufacturers Association’s (GAMA) figures for the first half of 2021, with 565 piston-powered aircraft

delivered, 12.3 percent more than in the first half of 2020 and almost exactly the same number as in the first half of 2019 (itself a good six months). In the first half of 2018, the manufacturers of general aviation aircraft had not even been able to hand over 500 piston engine aircraft to customers. GAMA president and CEO Pete Bunce said: “Through the first six months of 2021, we can see that the industry continues to progress in its recovery efforts. While it is encouraging to see

segments improve from 2020, we still trail when compared to how the industry was faring before the onset of the pandemic. Efforts to address ongoing supply chain issues, strengthen our workforce, and enhance environmental sustainability will continue to be at the forefront as interest and demand for aircraft remains robust.”

Piston Numbers Up According to the latest statistics from various national aviation authorities, the numbers of registered pistonpowered aircraft has not declined during the crisis. In the UK, there are over 8,700 GA aircraft (excluding microlights) registered with the UK CAA, while in Germany the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt register shows more than 6,700 single-engine piston aircraft, and in France there are over 5,700 light aircraft registered (excluding microlights). Buyers of piston-powered aircraft seem to have developed a ‘now or never’ mentality during the Coronavirus pandemic and are now fulfilling their dreams of owning their own aircraft or of trading their existing aircraft for a newer one. Before 2020, it was mainly flight schools that drove up the order and sales figures of piston engine aircraft manufacturers through fleet purchases. Now it is increasingly private owners who are ordering new aircraft. Even if the flight schools, which produce a particularly large number of take-offs and landings, are still a long way from their pre-crisis level, there is nevertheless significantly more flying again. This is primarily noticed by the general aviation airfields, which were able to welcome more guests to their airports again this summer.

Flight hours are the key factor for general aviation: when more flights are made, the aircraft not only require corresponding fuel quantities, but also maintenance and overhaul services. Suppliers and pilot shops can sell more instruments and accessories to pilots while airports can enjoy more take-offs and landings.

Going Cleaner, Greener Although there have been no new piston aircraft launches in the past two years, this was to be expected due to the uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 crisis. On the other hand, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on the issue of sustainability. We can look forward to AERO 2022 and EAA AirVenture 2022 to see what innovations the OEMs will present there. The environmental authorities in the USA and Europe have, for example, been increasingly critical of the addition of lead to Avgas 100LL for decades. After all, lead is also a neurotoxin that damages the nervous system and causes kidney damage in higher doses. In Avgas 100LL, the lead content is 0.56 grams per litre, in Avgas 100VLL only 0.45 grams per litre. Textron Aviation (of Wichita, Kansas) has now obtained approval for various unleaded and very-low leaded fuels for its Cessna 172 Skyhawk and 182 Skylane, and 206 Turbo Stationair HD. Aircraft of these types with Lycoming engines are allowed to use the more environmentally friendly fuels if they comply with Service Bulletins SEB-28-04 and MEB-28-01, respectively. Textron Lycoming had conducted test series that identified the use of these fuels as problem-free. As a result, Lycoming approved their use. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk and Cessna 182 Skylane are now allowed to use unleaded avgas 91UL and 94UL

P2010

as well as the very low leaded 100VLL. The Turbo Stationair T206 HD, on the other hand, may only use 100VLL. The use of these fuels is not only permitted for new aircraft, but also for old aircraft that meet the requirements. “Textron Aviation is committed to sustainability, and this announcement is an excellent opportunity for aviation enthusiasts to minimise their carbon footprint while continuing to enjoy the journey of flight,” said Chris Crow, vice president, piston & utility sales. “We have produced more than 75,000 of these three piston-aircraft models, and this gives owners and operators around the world a chance to take action in reducing emissions.”

Electric Flight Various manufacturers are already preparing the next step towards more sustainability: Electric flight. Currently, there is only one certified all-electric electric aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, in the class of CS23 or FAR 23 aircraft, but several manufacturers — including newcomers — are working on new, highperformance and emission-free designs that also promise significantly lower operating costs. Although the performance of electric aircraft is still far from that of traditional piston-engined aircraft, especially in terms of range, the new technology will evolve. The Wright Brothers’ first successful powered flight on 17 December 1903 took them only 120 feet. Just 24 years later, Charles Lindbergh became the first human to cross the Atlantic non-stop in a singleengine aircraft. Aircraft with piston engines will accompany us for decades to come, but the future for the category of propeller aircraft with two-to-six seats has already begun.

Volker K. Thomalla Head of Communication Aerospace Cluster MESSE FRIEDRICHSHAFEN GMBH AERO 2022 will take place in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from April 27 to April 30, 2022. The show will focus on the industry’s restart after the pandemic, and the topic of sustainability in aviation will also play a central role. The upcoming edition will offer a complete range of products for all areas of General Aviation. Aircraft ranging from civil drones to gliders, ultralights and gyrocopters, helicopters,

touring and training aircraft with piston or turboprop engines and business jets will be present. New propulsion systems, electric flight, state-of-the-art avionics, services, and accessories for pilots are further focal points. These topics are also reflected in the AERO Conferences, making Europe’s largest General Aviation event also an AERO 2022 will offer once again the full spectrum of GA aircraft. © Messe Friedrichshafen

Honeywell Unveils “Anthem” Cloud-Connected Cockpit Offering •

Always-on Cloud connectivity enhances operational efficiency and provides a clear path to autonomous flight.

User experience as intuitive as a Smartphone.

Scalable design suits a wide range of aircraft platforms.

Honeywell has unveiled an all-new aircraft cockpit system, the first in the industry built with an always-on, cloudconnected experience that “improves flight efficiency, operations, safety and comfort.” The Honeywell Anthem flight deck offers “unprecedented levels of connectivity, [with] an exciting and intuitive interface modelled after everyday smart devices, and a highly scalable and customisable design.” Honeywell Anthem is powered by a flexible software platform that can be customised for virtually every type of aircraft and flying vehicle, including large passenger and cargo aircraft, business jets, helicopters, general aviation aircraft, and the rapidly emerging class of advanced airmobility (AAM) vehicles. Not Just a New Cockpit “Honeywell is… changing the way pilots operate aircraft and creating a more intuitive experience than ever,” said Mike Madsen, President and CEO of Honeywell Aerospace. Honeywell says Anthem is designed to solve two problems facing the aviation industry: “First, it creates ways for increasingly complex aircraft to function with more autonomy, relieving stress on pilots and promoting safety and efficiency. Second, it enables the disjointed systems that support an aircraft to work together more seamlessly to deliver critical information to pilots.” Path to Autonomy Honeywell Anthem supports growing levels of aircraft autonomy, leading to complete autonomous capabilities in the future as regulations allow. Enabling increasing levels of autonomy — whether it’s automating manual tasks for singlepilot operation or automating more complex processes to reduce workload across all pilots, maintenance engineers and other service providers in a large fleet — depends heavily on improving connectivity across aircraft systems. As the world’s first always-on, cloud-connected avionics, Honeywell Anthem generates and transfers data from ground-based servers so those involved in a flight’s operations have the information they always need. “Everyone who touches a flight is able to get information that matters to them when they need it,” said Vipul Gupta, Vice President and General Manager, Avionics, Honeywell Aerospace. “The aircraft becomes accessible via the cloud computing infrastructure, and things like maintenance data, flight plans and overall aircraft status are stored automatically

by the avionics or via ground-based applications used by support personnel. This means data is accessible by any authorised user from anywhere.” Mission Manager Honeywell Anthem’s connectivity capabilities dramatically reduce pilots’ preflight preparation time, including wasted time in the cockpit, by up to 45 minutes per flight. Honeywell Anthem seamlessly integrates with popular electronic flight bag planning applications to let pilots create, store and retrieve flight plans from anywhere. After pilots load the flight plan remotely, it will be ready and waiting when they arrive at the aircraft. Prior to travelling to the airport, pilots can set up automatic notifications managed via the new Mission Manager function so that fuelling teams, ground transportation and caterers are aware of the mission plan, even if the plan has to change due to unexpected weather. Intuitive Interface Pilots or operators — whether in the cockpit or on their device at home — can customise the layout of digital displays within the cockpit to their preference. With a few finger swipes, pilots can reconfigure a screen or cluster of information just like they would on their personal smart device. Additionally, unlike traditional interfaces based on limited text-entry or basic graphical menus, Honeywell Anthem uses visualisation and modern graphical and gesture-based methods, making the flight deck much easier to use and more fun to fly. Enhanced Situational Awareness Honeywell Anthem can reduce significantly the potential for ground collisions, runway incursions and runway excursions with several new features that provide pilots with unprecedented situational awareness. This includes the 3D Runway Overrun Alerting and Awareness System (ROASS) and 3D Airport Moving Maps.

Honeywell Anthem also provides the cleanest, most functional symbology available today, a track-based Synthetic Vision System, plus the industry’s best Integrated Navigation Map and Vertical Situation Display. Another of Honeywell Anthem’s unique features is a web browser that allows third-party applications and websites to run in the Honeywell Anthem cockpit. Honeywell Forge Integration Honeywell Anthem also integrates with Honeywell Forge, a software platform that includes in-air and on-ground solutions for flight operations, flight efficiency, and connected maintenance in a single user interface. This integration enables operators to make proactive decisions about in-flight routing that save fuel and help avoid flight interruptions because of maintenance. Honeywell claims Forge can help operators and OEMs reduce labour costs associated with managing their fleets by 10-15 percent. Urban Air Mobility In addition to use on general aviation aircraft, rotorcraft and business jets, Honeywell Anthem will be available to future aircraft platforms in the emerging AAM market segment. Honeywell Anthem has already been selected by Vertical Aerospace and Lilium for their vertical takeoff and landing, all-electric aircraft, the VA-X4 and 7-Seater Lilium Jet, respectively. An Aerospace Leader… Honeywell’s Aerospace business unit builds aircraft engines, cockpit and cabin electronics, wireless connectivity systems, mechanical components and more. Its hardware and software solutions create more fuel-efficient aircraft, more direct and on-time flights and safer skies and airports.

DECEMBER 2021

The ‘Warbird Finder’ By Jamie Chalkley LIEUTENANT

Ever wonder where some of these WWII aircraft resurface from years and years after being lost in action? In some cases, I mean literally ‘re-surface’. The main picture aircraft for example was pulled out of a freshwater lake in Northern Russia on 6th October 2004 having remained untouched since it’s fateful last flight of 19th November 1944. Who found it? and how did it end up in a museum in 2009 standing ‘literally’ just 650 metres from its original production hangar…? I’m glad you asked…

Lost and … Like a tale from an Indiana Jones movie, a number of warbirds lie untouched in some of the remotest areas of the world. Some are locked away in ice. Some are seasonal, appearing in the spring before getting swallowed by winter. Some are hiding in plain site, but there’s no one around to see them. But they all have a story to tell. Take this P39 ‘Airacobra’. Built by Bell as a P-39Q (no. 44-2911) at Bell’s plant in Buffalo, New York. It was completed on 23rd November 1943. Just a few weeks later, on Christmas Day, its maintenance log shows it left the plant on the first leg of its long journey to the Soviet Union under one of many LendLease agreements of the time. It reached Fairbanks, Alaska on 9th January 1944. Some 3,000 miles already flown. On 1st February , its Soviet pilot arrived to collect the aircraft. After a brief stop on some last US soil in Nome, Alaska, it was flown across the Bering Strait into the Soviet Union. Onward it flew a further 3,000 miles to its eventual base near Mumansk, Russia. Somewhere on this route it was assigned its military number ‘White 23’ and this along with its Russian markings were added to the livery (painted over the top of its US markings). This aircraft was one of 2,565 P-39 Airacobras that followed the same route to World War II’s Eastern Front. But this is the only one that made it right back to where it started.

32 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE DECEMBER 2021

IVAN BARANOVSKY

On 19th November 1944, 22-year-old Lieutenant Ivan Baranovsky, a combat veteran, departed his Russian base to fly the airplane with his squadron to the recently captured air base at Luostari, near the Norwegian border. But part way into the flight the aircraft broke from formation, disappeared down into cloud, and was never heard from again. No mayday call, no news, no clues. Lost!

Found! Skip forward almost 60 years. During the recovery of a crashed WWII fighter from a fresh water lake in ‘The middle of nowhere,’ a fisherman rowed his boat over to the recovery team and asked if they were going to pick up the other one while they were there. The team looked at each other, nodded and said “sure”. For just a little further over, sitting on the lakebed covered in heavy silt, ‘White 23’ waited in hibernation, untouched and unseen for six decades. Using floatation bags, the aircraft was raised carefully to the surface and floated to the shore. Inside the aircraft they found some remains of the pilot, two medals (the Glory Order III Degree and Military Order of the Red Banner), some shoes, the aircraft logbook and 11 small cans of food that had been stashed in the ammunition bays (labelled ‘made in USA’). “Missing for 60 years and soon after the recovery on 6th October 2004, the pilot was buried with full military honours at the Glory Valley Memorial, near the Litza Valley, North West of Murmansk. Finally some closure on his disappearance.”

The aircraft was moved to the UK for inspection. Having been in fresh water, the aircraft was in remarkably good condition. It had evidence of earlier combat damage with a number of bullet holes from previous missions, but the reason for the aircraft dropping out of formation was finally learned, for there were two large holes in the engine block. It transpires that the engine had thrown two rods, forcing him to make a belly landing on a frozen Lake. Baranovsky obviously did a pretty good job of putting it down on the ice, as the leading edges and belly of the aircraft were hardly bruised at all. Strangely it was the trailing edges and flaps that suffered the most damage. They had been bent and pushed ‘up’. It is thought that the aircraft came to rest on the ice, for reasons unknown the pilot didn’t climb out, and the aircraft sank when the ice eventually thawed. With the engine on the P39 sitting behind the cockpit, the aircraft slipped backwards and down as it broke through the ice once it was no longer thick enough to support the weight of the aircraft. This pushed the thinner trailing edges and flight control surfaces up, bending them as the ice broke around it, allowing the aircraft to sink into the depths below. Also evident after recovery were the incredibly clear aircraft markings. The paint was in remarkable condition with bright colouration. You could clearly see the Russian star painted over the US star, and if you think that’s amazing, wait till you hear the inner tubes were still full of air! The Aircraft was a time capsule! How do I know? I was there when she was unloaded in the UK.

New Beginnings A few years later, in 2008, a director of the Niagara Airspace Museum by the name of Hugh Neeson heard about the aircraft. He came to the UK and inspected the P39 and put together an acquisition plan to bring the aircraft “back home”. Amazingly the Museum is located just 650 metres from the Bell production facility hangar doors that ‘White 23’ first rolled out of in late 1943. The aircraft is now the centre piece of the museum and as she stands today resides at a distance that can literally be measured in metres from where she was first assembled. Since the aircraft left, it has flown some 7,000 miles to the Eastern Front, crash landed in the Russian Arctic Circle, travelled west to the UK following recovery, then travelled west

again via ship and road back to Buffalo. The aircraft has completely circumnavigated planet Earth! Mr. Neeson made a decision to present the aircraft in its recovered condition. That is to say, rather than restore it, the aircraft remains ‘frozen in time’ and can be found today exactly as she was left on her last ever flight. The exhibit includes a tribute to the lend-lease programme of WWII (the museum has named the aircraft ‘Miss Lend Lease’) along with a tribute to the pilot Lieutenant Ivan Baranovsky and the women that built her (and many others).

Every Aircraft has a Story! The man who recovered the aircraft out the lake was my late grandfather, Jim Pearce. A well-known ‘Warbird Finder’ having over 50 recoveries credited to his name. And trust me, every aircraft has a story. This is just one! But this one stands out to me. The fact it went full circle, the fact it solved a mystery of decades old and its ripples following recovery reconnected with the pilot’s family and the relatives of the young women who built the aircraft. And the fact it’s on display in an amazing ‘as it was found’ exhibit just a very short walk from where it was first pushed out the door.

The Ladies that Built Her During close inspection of the aircraft Mr. Neeson was reminded that the women who built these often used to write their names and good luck messages for future pilots to find. Sure enough, the museum conservators found two names written on some interior panels: Helen Rose and Eleanor Barbaritano. Sandra Hierl, the daughter of the late Eleanor Barbaritano, was contacted by the museum and invited to come and see her mum’s plane. Miss Barbaritano was just 19 when she worked at the Bell production facility. Mrs Hiel remarked that her mum had told her about the girls writing their names and addresses on some aircraft panels and added “…now and then a pilot would write to one of the women and thank them for the good work they’d done.”

I was lucky enough to visit the brilliant Niagara Airspace Museum myself just a few years ago. If ever you find yourself not too far away (I made a 16-hour round trip to drive up from Connecticut to visit), I thoroughly recommend it. It’s an amazing museum and I was gobsmacked to learn about the local history, for the seeds of aviation itself came to root very firmly here. In 1916 the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company was formed, which in 1929 evolved into the CurtissWright Corporation (as in ‘the Wright Brothers’). By the end of WWII it was the largest manufacturer of aircraft in America. And if that wasn’t enough, another big name to come out of Buffalo was the Bell Aircraft Corporation. So back in the day, if you were into aviation, what a place to be! All that, and they have a really great water feature just up the road too! Honestly – go visit!

SW-51 Mustang! Kits for the 70 Percent Scale Replica P-51 Are Now Available By Sebastian Glueck North American’s World War II-era P-51 Mustang has consistently won polls of pilots asking to identify their favourite aircraft. You may love this magnificent aircraft, but nearly all pilots occasionally dreaming of owning — or at least flying — a P-51 Mustang will never be able to afford to buy one, and it’s almost certain they don’t have the budget to maintain it and fly it. The fuel bill alone for an hour’s flying would make you gasp! So, what do you do if you have a Walter Mitty-esque urge to own and fly a P-51 but you don’t have a couple of million lying around unused? Why not build your own? SW-51 began life as the FK-51. Alert readers will recognise that ‘FK’ refers to FK Lightplanes, a German design company lead by Peter Funk. For years, Peter manufactured popular designs such as FK-9 that sold hundreds of units. Peter developed other designs including the FK-12 Comet (an aerobatic biplane), the sleek FK-14 Le Mans, and several wonderful vintage recreations like the Buecker Jungmann or his interpretation of the FK-9 Clubman with radial engine. His interest was in the creation and development of designs, though; Peter was less enamoured with the manufacturing side of the business, so he turned to others. A man named Rolland Hallam launched into building a series of the FK designs. It seemed to go well for a while and around a decade ago, at Aero Friedrichshafen, he created a sensation by introducing the amazing creation of the highly energetic Hans Schoeller. FK, working with ScaleWings as a consultant, hoped to build one a week starting as early as 2015. It never happened. Whatever the challenges Rolland faced, they proved insurmountable. Production of all FK airplanes slowed to a crawl. FK-51 went dark.

Republic. Aircraft serial number #001 took off at 11:37 am into the light, cloudy sky. Chief test pilot Jirko “Jiri” Hybler praised the balanced and highly manoeuvrable handling of the aircraft, managing crosswinds of more than 10 knots with superior control.

After Rolland bowed out, Hans joined up with young entrepreneur Christian von Kessel, who found money and facilities and vowed to bring the now renamed SW-51 to market. That took time, but Christian kept after his goal.

Success at Last

Within the first flight hours all systems were checked to prove their functionality. These flights already included the retraction of the electrically driven landing gear. The first flight worked exactly to schedule so that 35 minutes later the aircraft safely touched down back in LKMB.

SW-51 conducted a successful maiden flight and passed other technical benchmarks. Then Christian and Hans set about putting SW-51 into production. This is not a small project, but they are now excited to announce that they are shipping kits.

This first flight of the serial aircraft configuration of the SW-51 Mustang was an important milestone for ScaleWings. The aircraft programme was launched in 2013, followed by a successful first flight of the ‘proof-of-concept’ prototype just one year later. After that, ScaleWings worked on both the serialisation of the aircraft and the industrialisation of the company at the production site in Krosno, Poland.

In October 2021, Sebastian Glueck, formerly with TQ Avionics, observed: “After TQ reduced their efforts to become a market player in the U.S. — and after the Corona pandemic interrupted many activities also in Europe — I joined ScaleWings and we are pushing to bring this one-of-a-kind kit to the market.” Calling it “the world’s most accurate P-51 Mustang replica at 70 percent scale,” a standard SW-51 kit — with MTOW of 750 kilograms (1,654 pounds) — includes “the complete all-carbon body parts, control elements, seats, and the electrically driven retractable landing gear.” The company describes SW-51’s unique feature: “more than 100,000 details (rivets, screws, etc.) of the original P-51 Mustang are faithfully worked into the carbon surfaces of the delivered kit, creating a near-perfect reincarnation of the legendary icon.” “This is beyond any previous kit execution in the market,” said Christian and Sebastian. I’m inclined to agree for the singular fact of SW-51’s incredibly authentic mimicking of the World War II original. The standard SW-51 kit includes: -

Fuselage

-

Centre wing

-

Outer wings

-

Stabiliser

-

Control surfaces and system

-

Electrical retractable landing gear

-

Seats (leather, front and back)

-

The brand-new Rotax 915iS Turbo engine is catapulting the sleek design to a climb rate of more than 2,200 feet-per-minute. The airframe’s flight envelope is designed for a Vne (never exceed speed) of not less than 250 mph (216kts). By keeping the noise emission on a much lower level compared to the original, but maintaining a similar ‘sound’, the aircraft merges all positive effects of innovative technologies and historic ramp appeal. Walter Mitty only dreamed about doing marvellous things. If you are a builder or can work with others to create your own SW-51, you can leave the dreaming behind and take your own ‘51 aloft. How cool would that be? Sebastian Glueck is Business Development Manager for ScaleWings Aircraft GmbH

Optional additional equipment includes a complete firewall forward kit including Rotax 915iS and MT 4-bladed propeller. SW-51’s avionics kit includes a choice of Dynon HDX or Garmin G3X. So… can you afford this beauty? Naturally, that depends on your individual budget. Kit prices reflect the work involved in fabricating parts. In their ‘Launch Edition’, Standard Kits start at €119,000 (about £103,000). The Standard Kit and optional packages can be ordered now at ScaleWings’ website.

Aviation Valley ScaleWings is a Eggenfelden, Germany-based aircraft design and manufacturing company. The enterprise runs its own production plant in the renowned ‘Aviation Valley’ in southeast Poland where SW-51 Mustangs are built by a workforce of 30 full-time employees in a 25,000 square-foot facility. ScaleWings reports having a current production output of twelve aircraft per year. On 20th May 2021 the serial-production SW-51 Mustang successfully performed its first flight at Mlada Boleslav airport (LKMB) in the Czech

FLIGHT TESTING The Chuck Yeagers of Aerial Work Aviation Have you ever heard of the Aerial Work Flight Testing sector? Do you know what this specialised Aerial Work aviation sector actually does? Patrick Ryan ‘Flight Checks’ the answer and highlights many interesting aspects of this unique ‘Right Stuff’ aviation sector. As far as pushing the limits, few Aerial Work aviation sectors can compete with Flight Testing. Other types of sectors, Aerial Fire Fighting and Aerobatics, have substantial risks, but most jobs don’t require you to willingly come as close to total aircraft failure to get the job done. And yet, that’s precisely what the Flight Testing sector does in Aerial Work aviation. The job of the Flight Testing sector is to explore the unknown, which was true at the being of manned flight and is true today. No matter how advanced design and testing technology becomes, computers can only simulate what is known. The unknown is always, in a sense, not predictable. A computer can deduce what should occur as a logical extension of what has occurred up to that moment, but the outcome cannot be assured until it is tested in actual conditions. Flight testing is where that examination occurs. It is that point where the rubber meets the runway, where the aircraft, the test team and the actual flight conditions come together for the first time. And because Flight Testing investigates that fine edge between the known and the unknown, it is a placewhere finding the known happens. 44 AERIAL WORK EUROPE DECEMBER 2021

The Purpose of Flight Testing At its core, the objective of Flight Testing is to compare the airplane’s performance against set specifications it is supposed to meet. However, not to confuse it with Flight Research, the difference between Flight Testing and Flight Research sits not in the mechanics of each operation but in the questions that drive the work and how unexpected findings are viewed. The idea is not to explore new realms of aeronautical knowledge but to ensure that a new aircraft design or configuration performs acceptably. Unless the anomaly is better-than-predicted performance, unexpected results in a flight test programme indicate problems that need fixing. The information gained through flight testing is also directed toward a specific end-user concerning a specific platform, modification, or system.

Not a One-Off Effort Flight Testing is not a one-off effort of just testing a new aircraft before production. Instead, it’s a formal and dedicated aerospace industry discipline consisting of

technical standards, professionals, aircraft, and instruments with a focused effort to support turning unknowns to knowns regarding both aircraft and the individual components integrated into these platforms. Flight Testing undertakes a wide range of valuable specialised tasks or efforts, including: Aircraft Performance Testing – This type of testing is intended to assess general handling qualities of an aircraft, operational performance, airfield noise emission, and systems operation in normal mode, failure scenarios, and extreme conditions. Aircraft Stability and Control Testing – Stability and control testing involve an airplane’s static and dynamic stability and control characteristics. Aircraft Avionics and Systems Testing – Aircraft avionics and systems testing entails verifying how avionics and other systems are installed in an aircraft. Designers and flight test teams must validate precisely how they will operate under every conceivable condition that may occur during flight.

Platforms Not like other Aerial Work sectors, Flight Testing, by nature, involves dealing with pretty much every type of aircraft and platform before the general aerospace and aviation community can safely fly it. Outside of testing a newly designed aircraft from nose-to-tail, the Flight Test sector also does some unique or specific testing with some distinctive aircraft. Some of these types of testing and the aircraft utilised are:

Unique Aircraft and Systems Testing – Unique aircraft and systems testing are just that, testing unique systems or modifications that may have flight type implications that influence a certified aircraft’s performance or handling characteristics. This includes any systems changes likely to affect aircraft operation, consequences for the pilot and crew, or anything that requires an amendment to the Aircraft Flight Manual. Examples of this are: • • • •

Radar/Antenna Domes Sensor Lifts Sensor Operator Workstations And many more…

Post Maintenance Testing – Post Maintenance flight test is an operational check flight after an aircraft has undertaken maintenance in a way that may have significantly changed its flight characteristics or substantially affected its operational capabilities.

Mitigating the Risk

Gulfstream G-III – Testing jammer pods, atmospheric research optical sensors, etc.

Columbia 400, Piper M600, and the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet – Testing the Garmin Autoland system.

In the 1960s, with the cost of prototype aircraft development increasing rapidly, the emerging flight testing sector, airframe manufacturers and governments could not afford to lose expensive prototypes at such an alarming rate.

Learjet – Testing (refueling probe-equipped) of UAV Automated Aerial Refueling systems, Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) sensors, and external radars for UAV Sense and Avoid programs, etc.

Saab 340 – Testing F-16 fire control radars along with EO/IR sensors.

With this, the System-safety concept was born along with improvements in computer-based simulation, which allowed designers and system-safety experts to mitigate risk before any actual flight. In addition, this new capability allowed the engineers to determine how much redundancy was required to obtain the required level of safety.

Rolls-Royce ‘Spirit of Innovation’ – Testing an electric powertrain and power-dense battery packs.

Instruments

The three significant consequences of this route to System-safety became clear: • • •

Not waiting for an accident to occur during testing. Identify design deficiencies early. Make changes in designs before production or prototype execution.

As mentioned before, Flight Testing pushes the limits of flying to the edges of the unknown, e.g., will there be a catastrophic failure while flying at extreme altitudes or high speeds and put test pilots and others in harm’s way.

As a result, System-safety is sometimes delineated as a ‘cradle-to-grave’ safety process, where highly refined safety principles are applied throughout the entire lifecycle of a platform or system, not just during its flight test.

In the past, Flight Testing was a hazardous business. In the 1950s, the doctrine of Flight Testing was “fly, crash, fix, fly.” Flight testing teams of that period would often watch with interest until an accident occurred, pinpoint and fix the problem, and then fly again to see if the solution worked. The flight test community averaged about 25 accidents a year or once every two weeks during that period! And this was the Glory Days of General Charles “Chuck” Yeager and Flight Testing!

Tools of the Trade Like other Aerial Work sectors, the Flight Testing sector operates with preferred capabilities and testing instruments to get the job done. The type of aircraft or instruments depends on the type of testing. This can vary from testing a prototype wide-body airline aircraft (e.g., Airbus 320neo) to a single aircraft component, e.g., a high-performance, low noise aircraft propeller system for production aircraft.

When it comes to the community utilises, they leading-edge Flight Test industry from companies and FTI.

systems the Flight Testing operate some of the most Instrumentation (FTI) in the like Curtis Wright, SAFRAN,

The main purpose of these instruments is to monitor and record. FTI equipment are integrated into aircraft during flight test. It is mainly used on experimental, prototype, and development aircraft and can examine various elements from the speed of the engines to temperatures of specific components. The information is displayed in the cockpit or cabin to allow the test team to observe the platform in real-time during the flight and is usually recorded for post-flight analysis. The primary types of test instruments include data acquisition systems, recorders, switches, high speed and HD cameras, RF transmitters, transceivers and receivers, flight safety systems, wireless transmitters, transponders, and transceivers gateways (Ethernet and PCM), and display and analysis software.

The Life of a Test Pilot Based on the career title alone, Test Pilots have one of the world’s most inspiring jobs. But ‘Right Stuff’ moments aside, the life of a test pilot demands meticulous

excellence, specific training, and in-depth education. In the case of today’s test pilots and like the Chuck Yeager years, it also calls for a dedication to push into the unknown without concern and make aviation even safer. As mentioned before, the flight test world consists of several types of efforts, including experimental, engineering, production, and post-maintenance testing. This also includes the various types of Test Pilots that accomplish these specific tasks. While the various kinds of Test Pilot assignments involve a variety of particular experience considerations, several qualifications are familiar to all Test Pilots. These are: Education – Again, qualifications vary depending on the type of testing. However, typically, a broad discipline including the study and application of basic science, engineering, physical or computer science, mathematics, aeronautics, technical management, and organisational principle is required. Flight Training & Experience – All test pilots flying for hire have progressed through various flight training programs and have earned a commercial pilot’s license or an airline transport rating. In addition, they will most likely have one or more advanced ratings such as instrument, multi-engine, or aircraft type ratings depending upon their particular test flying requirements. Specialised Training – Additionally, most Test Pilots, depending on where they operate globally, are required to accomplish specialised Flight Testing training and certification. According to Martin Albrecht, Test Pilot for MT-Propellers and a seven-time winner of the German Aerobatic Championship: “In the early years, when Josef Eberl (Senior Test Pilot at MT-Propellers) and myself became test pilots in Europe, we had to have an engineering degree along with the appropriate flight ratings. Our training consisted of both theory and practical flight test training and examinations. With good fortune, we trained with some of the most famous German Test Pilots like Dieter Thomas and Heiner Neumann.” Today, “In the EU, Test Pilots also have to have a commercial pilot licence with a Patrick Sarda, flight test engineer at Daher

specified number of hours of experience and certification per EASA FCL (Flight Crew License) requirements. Additionally, regarding Test Pilot certification, an individual has to go to a mandatory ATO (Approved Training Organisation) approved to provide EASA training and testing for Flight Test Categories CAT-1, -2, -3 -4.” Currently, “Josef and I hold a Test CAT-1, which means we have no restrictions concerning altitude, speed, and seats of the to-be-tested aircraft. For comparison, Test CAT-2 has the limits max. 25,000 ft, Mach 0.6, and non-commuter.” Overall, “real flight testing has a lot to do with the correct preparation, aircraft type and task to be tested, flight cards and making sure the correct recording system is installed. We at MT-Propeller perform flight testing for our own certification work and customers chartering us as test pilots. If you have your life in GA and Aerial Work aviation you, of course, have a variety of aircraft to fly, and typically, the flight test aircraft you test at your fingertips.”

Test Flight Complete It just goes to show, some people like to think of themselves as ‘adrenaline junkies’ because they completed an aerobatic course or jumped out of an airplane — and then there are guys like Martin Albrecht and Josef Eberl. The Flight Test sector is another truly unique and special Aerial Work segment that pushes flying limits. However, they conduct their trade with a different discipline, precision, caution, and purpose. As you read, the Flight Test sector not only tests a one-off prototype aircraft as a whole but also finds the unknowns of the other components and systems integrated into an aircraft mainframe with intent and specialised instruments like a doctor. As a result, they genuinely compare the airplane’s performance, modification, or repair against set specifications. So, next time you read an article of an aircraft test program or hear of a postmaintenance flight check, think of where the Flight Test sector is today verses the Chuck Yeager glory days of “fly, crash, fix, fly.” Today, the ‘Flight Testing’ community is truly keeping aviation safe and effective with prudent and rigorous discipline! ■ TBM 700-02 prototype used to test a Shotover F1 8K camera mounted under the wing for Airborne Films.

Savback Helicopters ENHANCES Business Model

Savback Helicopters, a leading specialist helicopter vendor with a global client base, is pleased to present its new, ‘independently focused’ business model – showcased in a brand-new website,

Savback.com.

Bolstered with a wider geographical reach, following the opening of offices in the UK, Italy and Slovakia, Savback, headquartered in Sweden, says it will carefully consider clients’ requirements and travel habits to recommend the best brand and model for their mission.

Seeking New Partners Savback is also pleased to be adding a new advisory for environmentally minded clients on carbon offsetting, lowering emissions and sustainability initiatives, working closely with the OEMs. Savback is redefining its business, drawing on 31 years in helicopter advisory, in line with the needs of existing and new clients – to be a fully independent, agnostic agency and ‘go to partner’ for buyers, sellers, helicopter operators and OEMs. It is also actively seeking new alliances with private jet operators and lifestyle partners, coinciding with the start of 2022, as it continues its objective to grow its international presence.

New Website Its new easy-to-navigate website includes an up-to-date detailed inventory feature, which will become a global digital marketplace for new and used helicopters, plus an engaging ‘shop window’ for current and future services. The corporate enhancement of Savback is in direct response to the market,

which is seeing an encouraging uptick in demand for used helicopter inventory. Just like the private jet sector, helicopter sales have been buoyed by more firsttime buyers coming in since summer 2020. Helicopters for use on superyachts has seen exceptional growth this past year too.

Reflecting Values

To find out more about the Savback’s range of helicopters and services, please contact sales@savback.com

“Over the past 12 months we have fielded more enquiries around the world from newcomers looking to invest in the ultimate point-to-point transport to keep their employees, family and friends travel safe during the pandemic,” said Savback founder Michael Savbäck. “With people abandoning city offices and the trend to move into more countryside locations, efficient connectivity will help drive face-to-face business. This too is driving interest in helicopters,” he added.

Savback’s History

Corporate Helicopters on the Up According to Michael Savbäck, “Twin turbine helicopter sales have increased, supporting important infrastructure work like oil and gas, windfarms and special missions. Corporate helicopter travel is where the new growth is coming from, led by North America, but we are seeing heightened demand in Europe too. It’s an exciting time and 2022 looks even stronger,” he added. “To every helicopter manufacturer, we say our mission will always be to portray your brand and product in the best possible light — reflecting its suitability and defining characteristics in line with our customers’ requirements.”

Meanwhile, Savback will continue to promote and represent exciting new companies and products, including the Zefhir and the GHT G-250 Eagle, two ultra-light, turbine-powered helicopters with FADEC, as game changing market entrants in a new class category.

CEO REJA SAVBACK

CEO Reja Savbäck, who will be at the forefront of the business leading future partnership discussions, as well as leading strategic business development for Savback, is also excited for the company’s future. “Our new branding reflects who we are and the values we stand for,” she said. “Savback is a hands-on, family-owned business, supported by a talented team of specialists, all committed to offering quality services and products that set industry standards — globally.”

Savback Helicopters was founded in 1999 by Michael Savbäck. The company grew out of a long and successful association with Airbus Helicopters, a relationship which commenced in 1990 and evolved significantly when Savback represented the manufacturer in Sweden and Finland between 1999 and 2018. During that time Savback helped bolster market share, securing the sale of 260 new helicopters in the region. Savback also provided independent sales and marketing representation for Bell Helicopters in the region. In the light helicopter market, Savback served as sole distributor (Sweden, Finland and Norway) for the Cabri Guimbal G2, a revolutionary and innovative piston-engined light helicopter model, designed by former Eurocopter engineer Bruno Cabri.
