WONDERING

HOW TO GET YOUR GROOM MORE INVOLVED IN WEDDING PLANNING? by Kim Kirkley Growing up, most little boys don’t dream about their wedding day. However, now that it is here it would be great to have your man become more of a partner in your wedding planning rather than the groom who just shows up at the end of the aisle! These four tips should spur him into being your partner in planning this threshold experience for your family!

1. 2. 3. 4.

Begin with the end in mind. Ask him how he would like to feel on his wedding day. We think that people make decisions based on reason but studies tell us that is not really true. We feel first and then justify the feeling with our analytical insights. Once you get a sense of his heart-centered vision of himself, then ask how he would like you and all of the guests to feel, and what are the most important values that everyone should experience at your wedding. If your man is the silent type and he gives you one-word answers, resist the temptation to become frustrated or judge his answers. The goal here is to help him connect more to the event and touch the values that are important to him as your families and friends connect – often for the first time. If he says, “I just want everyone to be happy and have a good time,” thank him for sharing; and, this is the key: ask him what three factors would make this possible. If he says “good food, good music and a ceremony that is not boring,” ask him if he is willing to be responsible for those three elements. If he says “yes!” Great! Trust him to make that happen. If he says “no,” at least you now know that there are aspects of the wedding that really do matter to him.

Given that any wedding calls for an investment of time, money and energy from everyone who attends, it’s important to remember that love is leading you to have this celebration. If you center your wedding planning on the feelings that are driving you both to embark on this grand adventure, even the most stoic man is more likely to want to participate. It’s more than a big party; it’s the founding of a family. Just as it takes two to live it, it’s better when two plan it. Kim Kirkley of www.OurElegantCeremony.com, is a nationally acclaimed wedding Celebrant/Officiant and the author of Love Stories: Real Black Men Talk about Love, Marriage and Being a Good Black Man, available on Amazon.com.

O

ne of my favorite movies has to be Braveheart. Not necessarily for the war and violence, rather the great story line filled with passion and commitment to love; the love of one’s culture, people, and the love of your life. Sir William Wallace and Marion Braidfute’s wedding was a perfect scene, two people in love, and committed to the ideas of love despite all that was going on around them. For the purpose of this issue, what captured my attention was not the private, secret wedding for just the two of them and the priest, rather that Marion made the extra effort to somehow have a wedding dress made with full attire, hidden until she wed her beloved. Now that is not to say that William may not have cared about his appearance for his beloved. But it certainly was not depicted in the movie. As we prepared for this issue I questioned a couple of men and asked them what was the most important thing about their wedding. According to them, the wedding day was not the primary focus; for some it was the engagement, the proposal, the build up to ask the question. The wedding day for many is believed to be more for the bride, her family and friends. However, all that notwithstanding, more and more men are very much aware of their style and what clothing represents to them. So what they wear on their wedding day is becoming a big deal. You can see it on the runways of fashion shows. The dedication that the CFDA has put on Men’s Fashion Week and the designers that value the sense of style that today’s men have expressed with their wardrobe.

WBM | 7

In this issue we tried to show a cross section of men, not just the usual classic men with whom we are all familiar, but the millennial, new age men. We were in search of a variety of men who take pleasure in dressing up, yet wants to be comfortable on his wedding day without making a fuss and is very comfortable spending whatever is necessary to acquire well-made garments that express his sense of style, yet practicality. So, it is with great pleasure that we share this issue dedicated to the men in your life, and like you, expresses himself with his frock. We had the honor of engaging with the fabulous Mr. Baldwin, stylist, husband and author of The Groom. The premise of the book is to encourage men, particularly the groom, to find his style, while being comfortable on his wedding day. We realized that WBM and others were not speaking to the groom and his best man, ergo Mr. Baldwin along with his bride/wife Courtney who made it their mission to create an easily executable blueprint for men to manage on their own and together at the start of such a wonderful occasion. We styled our cover dramatically different then standard magazine, no-tuxedos. Not that we don’t think they are great. We wanted to talk to the boys. We wanted to make clothing fun. We wanted to show your groom how comfortable, playful the art of wearing clothing can be. We wanted to make it effortless with the use of accessories, shoes, belts, watches, bow ties, sunglasses and other wonderful accessories. So, you can imagine my excitement when interviewing the iconic brand

director of Cazal. Yes, Cazal, the brand that is synonymous with Hip Hop, including stars such as Run DMC, LL Cool J, Spike Lee, Quest Love, Jay Z, and my all-time favorite Mos Def and Cey Adams put the cool in men’s accessories. Then it went Hollywood when such greats as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Beyonce became involved. For us men’s styles have always been there, maybe not as celebrated as much as women, but it has and will always be there... so gentlemen enjoy your day with style. Enjoy! Amour!

EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Readers, Thank you for taking the time to read World Bride Magazine. We are thrilled that you have entrusted us with your time and resources for this product. I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy this issue. It is all about the men! How does that look in print? Well, we begin by thinking about how men are or aren’t involved in the process of planning a wedding and as a certified wedding planner, I have come to realize that while some men pretend like they don’t care about the planning, they do care whether or not you ask for their opinion, even though they may say they don’t; it is the subtle non-verbal action that we need to address. You will learn more about how to get and keep them involved in the process and have them like what they are doing. Be sure to check out The Wedding from the Groom’s Perspective. Focusing on the newest fashions and products that will complement your wedding’s entire esthetic is wonderful. Gone are the days with the black tux, white shirt, and black tie. There are so many nuances that are being added that fulfill both your vision and his ability to feel comfortable with these new ideas and concepts. That special day is about everyone’s comfort and enjoyment. Anything that is too extreme, over the top and just feels odd… say no. We discuss planning your financial future and the business of philanthropy. Which brings to mind a delightful couple I interviewed several years ago - Bernard and Shirley Kinsey. They have been married for four decades and

WBM | 9

made a conscious decision to begin their journey as husband and wife with the resolve to create a foundation and amass a magnificent art collection. The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey – Where Art and History Intersect, a national touring exhibit of authentic and rare art, artifacts, books, documents and manuscripts that tell the often untold story of African American achievement and contribution. Bernard and Shirley Kinsey are guided by the principals of “to whom much is given, much is required,” and they strive to live “a life of no regrets.” We also are fascinated by this green movement. How to incorporate protecting the earth in how you live and with the products that you use. Being mindful of the planet, while providing an element of protection in your home from many harsh chemicals and their exhaust in the atmosphere. We are so busy sometimes being busy that we pick up products without really reading the labels or checking what they do to the environment. We travel to some of the most incredible locations in Europe and we are in love. Yes, the most amazing places provide a beautiful backdrop for your wedding celebration. We visit the winding roads to the magnificent waterways in search of the hidden luxury that we know you desire. You will love the European articles as we travel from the Hotel Arts Barcelona, stop and learn a little from There’s Something About Mykonos, and head to Croatia!

WEDDING & LIFE STYLE IDEAS: Of course there is no other place to find the new hotness, from the newest hair treatments and extensions to the very products on your face. We appreciate you and hope you enjoy these incredible stories by the most fascinating editors! Enjoy!

Much Peace, Infinite Love & Immeasurable Blessings,

REAL WORLD BRIDES

Jenny& Brandon BUCHANAN

WHERE DID YOU GET MARRIED? In NYC, at City Hall and a reception at our apartment terrace, overlooking the New York Stock Exchange. WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO YOU ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? That our closest friends and mothers were able to share in our love, and have a good time.

HOW DID YOU MEET? We met at a BET Music Matters after-party at Beauty & Essex in New York. At the time, I was running my own digital media company, Curators of Dopeness, and Jenny was in the beginning stage of her music career. It was a bit fortuitous that we met, because Jenny, to this day, rarely ventures into the Lower East Side and I happened to live around the corner from the venue. I have very bad eyesight, so I couldn’t see much other than her big hair. But her energy was very obvious from way across the room. My business partner saw her and felt compelled to facilitate an introduction between us (I tend to be in my own world and shy). She was standoffish but when I started speaking French (she’s from Paris), I think that disarmed her a bit. In any event, she gave me her number but didn’t respond to my text messages for about a week. I made one last ditched effort by texting a long paragraph on why she had nothing to lose by going on a date with me and the rest was history — we were inseparable after that.

REAL WORLD BRIDES

Rebekah & Tim ROBERTSON Rebekah Powers and Tim Robertson always envisioned getting married on the Cape — this was until Rebekah’s mother was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. Instead of halting wedding plans, Rebekah, with the help of Boston’s Verb Hotel, was able to walk down the aisle early enough so that her mother could be there to enjoy it. Rebekah needed the perfect venue to parallel her original dream of a Cape Cod wedding, her punk rock spunk and her Jewish beliefs, all while keeping her husband’s Portuguese Catholic traditions at heart. When rock-n-roll collides with Cape Cod what are you left with? Boston. As a venue, the Verb Hotel was able to cater to both spiritual traditions, with a punk rock Unitarian minister disguised under a traditional robe. The Verb provided the juxtaposition Rebekah was looking for with an aesthetic appeal and outdoor space. Hojoko, the recently opened restaurant by James Beard award-winning chef Tim Cushman and Nancy Cushman, served as an additional advantage and went as far as to craft delicious “mocktails” for those whose beliefs prohibited them from consuming liquor. Rebekah, her husband and all of their loved ones were able to experience a piece of history with one another, and the Verb Hotel’s befitting culture made their special day just as unique as the property itself.

WBM | 17

She celebrates Judaism and has a personal punk rock spunk, he celebrates Portuguese Catholic Traditions.

The Verb Hotel, a dynamic re-imagining of a classic midcentury motel, reconnects with the rich musical and artistic roots of the Fenway neighborhood in which it is located. The hotel is built on the legacy of the Fenway Motor Hotel that first opened its doors in 1959. The Verb Hotel’s unconventional attitude is showcased through its interior décor, rare music and pop-culture memorabilia from Boston’s heritage. The Verb is the bustling backdrop of Fenway, with its mix of fingeron-the-cultural pulse, urban charm and sense of community, which have always played a big part in the hotel’s personality. Its electrifying music scene and indie edge have all helped shape the events and stories that the hotel has played a part in ever since.

MR. & MRS. Courtney Donnell

& BALDWIN WHERE DID YOU GET MARRIED? Morais Vineyards & Winery in Bealeton, Virginia

HOW DID YOU MEET? We were introduced by mutual friends back in 2003 when we were both living in Washington, DC. We dated for approximately four months and then lost contact for nearly five years. We reconnected in 2009 via Facebook and then the rest is pretty much history! WHAT DOES LOVE MEAN TO YOU? Love is the key to life. It’s about being patient, kind, forgiving, protective, trusting, hopeful, and tenacious. WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OR MOMENT ABOUT YOUR WEDDING? There were so many important moments at our wedding. The simple fact that our wedding may be the only time in our lives where we would have all of the most important people in our lives in one space was huge. We were so grateful for being able to share our love and our special day with our dearest family and friends. One of the most special moments was when Donnell and his groomsmen (who are all singers) serenaded me by singing “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” by Stevie Wonder. It was a very special surprise to all of our guests.

ITALIAN WEDDINGS

Comparison of Two Generations by Annalisa Arcoleo

taly is known for being a very romantic place, full of history and traditions. But to understand the heart of Italy you must know its people. Family is the pillar of this country, and this article will speak to you through two couples from different generations. If you are planning your honeymoon in Italy, keep reading! ROSALBA AND GIUSEPPE “The first time I met Rosalba I was going back home with my best friends. They were engaged to two beautiful women: Rosalba’s sisters! So I met her and she took me home in her grandmother’s Fiat 500, we talked a lot!” Giuseppe says. Coming from the ‘60s generation, their love story took place in the ‘80s, in Sicily. At that time the family was very involved in their children’s relationships. They were very respectful of their

famiies, but as a young couple in love, they used to tell little lies to spend the day alone walking on the beautiful sandy Sicilian beaches. Rosalba reminisces about a particular day in Mondello beach: “There were many waves that day, and I am not a good swimmer. I was in a panic (for no reason) and I looked at him and said: ‘Don’t worry about me! Leave me here, go away and be safe!’ But, of course, he took me to safety with him; he still teases me for what I said. I acted like a drama queen!” Respect, laughing together, sacrificies and love are the ingredients in Rosalba and Giuseppe’s marriage for 30 years. In essence, working together to build a strong family. Unfortunately, sometimes such commitment in the modern generation is not prominent. Rosalba and Giuseppe observe, “The newer generation seems unsatisfied, even if they have much more than we

DAVIDE AND VITTORIA “We met in 2003; we were part of a theater company: she was a professional dancer for ten years, and I tried to be an actor,” Davide says. Beautiful, fresh, young. Davide and Vittoria were born in Sicily in the ‘80s; their personalities, lifestyle and age make them a very modern family. They had a baby, Emanuele, when they were very young, prior to the wedding, but they are an example that if you really love each other, you are ready to take your responsibilities seriously. “Our families were very understanding and modern, they believed in me and Davide and in the strength of our love. If you are lucky enough to find the right person, then the marriage will be long lasting” Vittoria says. “Emanuele is very lucky: we are young parents and we are involved in our child’s passions. Davide loves cooking, Emanuele is learning to cook from him. I love to take care of my health by working out and eating healthy foods, Emanuele is learning that from me. At the same time, he is discovering new passions of his own, windsurfing and archery, and he makes us part of it; we are all discovering new passions thanks to our son!” says Vittoria. Vittoria is the curator of an art gallery and Davide has loved music since he was born. He started as a DJ when he was in high school and now he has a wife who encourages his passion and a son who embraces learning and working with his father. (Of course, they are always under the supervision of Vittoria; she knows when it’s time to go to bed.) “If a couple has love, trust and respect, it is imparted in some way to their children, who in their own way, recreate within themselves a nucleus with the same characteristics,” says Davide. Great values and legacy. Their lives and words reflect what is so special about Italy. So, are you ready to go?

FINANCE

His, Hers and Ours Finances WITH SUZE ORMAN

had the pleasure of interviewing Suze Orman while she was enjoying her vacation in the islands. I must say she is an in-your-face kinda girl when it comes to your finances. She is committed to the idea that each member of this union must have their own money and contribute to the whole according to their personal financial income and expenses. Suze believes that it is essential if you are being intimate with someone then you should know everything about one another’s finances. This is vital information — why is it being ignored? I had to giggle, Suze was clear; if there is intimacy in your bed it must translate to having intimacy with your partner’s finances. Suze didn’t hold back on the subject of women and their finances. We all know that women take care of and nurture everyone in our household, neighbors, friends, pets, plants, yet, we ignore ourselves. It was hard to hear, but when I did, I thought I would fall out of my chair. I had to ask her twice what she had said and her reply, “you can FICO first, then sex.” You must understand both of your FICO scores to provide financial security in your relationship. Most people don’t even discuss their finances says Suze; “it’s irresponsible, most people don’t know their partners, nor have discerned whether it’s love or lust. It is vital that each person knows how your mate’s money is being managed, what bills do they have and their FICO scores. These important details will determine what type of home you can purchase; whether cars or trips are within your reach.” Suze’s voice went up a couple of octaves when I discussed the person with the money rules the household and Suze said, “after marriage it’s way too late to discuss finances, it’s irresponsible for two grown people to not understand exactly how much money is coming to the relationship and how much is protected. Too many people spend a percentage of their income on household bills still have more money to play with than the other, at which point it becomes the percentage being spent after everyone’s personal bills have been paid. One partner should not have the ability to wine and dine himself and friends if the other’s income is not competitive. Many couples want to take their monthly bills and pay 50/50 on bills yet if you both are making $10,000 per month and the other partner has more bills it isn’t equal. Equity is key in marriage – particularly if you hold all the money. Suze believes that as you are going through the courting period you must have conversations surrounding you and your mate building a financial life together and

whether that will include purchasing a home, vacations, college tuition and investments. Suze was adamant about being brutally honest around a pre-nuptial agreement. Both parties must have their own attorneys and noted that if your partner wants to ignore or indicate that everything is going to be all right – these are red flag conversations. Each person should view this as being in a state of love and not hate; if you are hesitant or afraid to broach the subject, yet you make love and have orgasms with this person, but can’t discuss a prenup, you are facing financial cancer. And, quite frankly the other side of this is how do you manage this cancer that metastasizes when you won’t deal with actually getting your own lawyers and setting into place a financial prenuptial at least 6 months to 1 year prior to your wedding. The other point that Suze made that rocked my socks was when she spoke about her relationship. Both she and KT are both millionaires bringing their households together, and the value of having a wholesome conversation about their finances. It is the honesty and comfort of sharing the smallest details that makes their relationship stronger. When you withhold information that can impact the relationship you are setting yourselves up for failure. As the old adage goes, “honesty is the best policy,” especially in financial relationships!

Philip B. and Lauren B.

The “B” in Beauty by Tee Hundley

Philip B. has been coifing celebrities and royal families for years. His amazing hair treatments are very desired for their transforming qualities. Philip also has a skincare line that is popular worldwide. Beauty seems to run in the family since Lauren of Lauren B. Beauty, his niece, is now taking the nail lacquer industry by storm; one manicure at a time. Lauren, also Philip’s VP of Business Development, is taking the family business to another level. I had the pleasure to work with both beauties! WORLD BRIDE MAGAZINE: How did you get into hair & skincare? Has it always been your passion? PHILIP B.: When I was little, my mother used to take me with her to the hair salon. I just fell in love with the whole

Tadahiro Iwasaka is a Japanese artist born in a town named Wakayama, and who moved to New York City several years ago and fell in love with the culture. Born from a long lineage of carpenters, his father chose to fine tune his skills and became an architect. But these were not mere standard carpenters, these artisans built the most magnificent shrines and temples in Japan. After observing and working with his family Tadahiro used his artistic gifts to enhance the external attributes of human forms via hair, makeup, and body painting. He has dedicated his success and inspiration to his beloved grandfather who recently passed away. The legacy from his parents made him determined to be more than a bi-stander in this eclectic city; Tadai quickly made friends with various artists in the fashion and music industry. His friends vary from models and makeup artists that recognized his unique talent and passion for makeup and nails, which led him to start working on set in the most prestigious fashion shows for New York Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week and all the while, capturing their work behind the scene with his other passion, photography. While these cherished moments were fun, these resourceful talented acquaintances made it easy for Tadai to become an asset to all those who lovingly know him. Having learned the rules of this industry Tadi (fondly called by friends) is a model’s best friend when she is about to tie the knot – thus making him a “haute commodity.” This business growth potential becomes very clear - when one model leads you to another and another; no need for business cards the referrals keep him busy if not the shows, shoots and events. For us Tadai is one to watch in the beauty world. And his English has definitely improved. atmosphere and the transformations that went on there. WBM: Please tell us about your famous 25th Anniversary Russian Amber Limited Edition collection ($1500 USD)! PB: For our 25th anniversary, I wanted to do something really special. So many people love the Russian Amber jar, so we thought it would be fun to have a top European jeweler create limited-edition jars encrusted with Swarovski crystals. For die-hard Russian Amber fans, they’re the ultimate. WBM: I’ve (Tee) been using Lauren B. nail lacquer since we met. Why is Lauren B. so good? LB: First of all thank you! We use quality ingredients, components and materials. We don’t ever skimp on any of the cost or details. I believe it’s all about balance.

WBM: What colors are hot in what regions? LB: New Yorkers and Europeans like our nude collection, more emphasis on sophisticated colors. In Cali it’s always sandal season here…so we see a lot more orange, coral, hot pink and reds. Asia is all about the glitter and shimmers. For Dubai it’s bright bold warm colors. This dynamic family duo is going to continue to create beautiful products and treatments. We cannot wait to see what colors (Lauren) and concentrations (Philip) they come up with next! *You can find these luxurious products on www.Philipb.com and www.LaurenBBeauty.com

MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS FOR BRIDES & GROOMS

by Austen Parker Many skincare products claim to have revitalizing and transformative properties, however, it is often times a challenge to really know whether or not the products we are using actually work. As we age, it is vital that appropriate skincare regimens are adopted to meet our individual needs – allowing us to retain a youthful appearance as long as we can. Acquiring and maintaining beautiful skin not only supports one’s natural attractiveness, but also creates a strong foundation for cosmetic application. Over the past year, I have tested and experimented with a number of dramatically effective products and devices that I consider absolute musthaves for brides and grooms in preparation for the big day.

PRODUCTS FOR BRIDES 1 | NUDE PROGENIUS OMEGA MILK & OIL – this

two-step system transforms the skin in a matter of weeks. Made of omega-rich superfoods such as chia seed oil, pomegranate extract, and sea buckthorn oil, the milk serum instantly soothes and hydrates the skin while promoting a youthful appearance. After applying the milk and letting it fully absorb into the skin, the oil can be used

WBM | 47

3 | LANCÔME LA BASE L’ABSOLU ROUGE – to be

to lock in moisture and youthenhancing properties for up to 24 hours. If used as directed twice daily for 2 months prior to the wedding, one can visibly see a transformation from dull, dry, and tired-looking skin to a more radiant, youthful, and glowing complexion.

2 | L’OREAL YOUTH CODE PORE VANISHER – to be

used twice daily, this product is clinically proven to not only reduce the appearance of pores, but also actually reduce the number and size of pores after 4 weeks of usage. After application, pores instantly look almost vanished. If used as a primer (or pre-primer), makeup application applies seamlessly to the skin without caking – as the product fills in dimensional pores and creates a smooth surface. This product should be used as the last step in one’s personal skincare regimen.

applied as a lip conditioner prior to lipstick and/or gloss application, this colorless lip base preps and primes the lips with the support of Lancôme’s Advanced Replenishing & Reshaping Pro-Xylane™ system – a cosmeceutical proprietary blend that restores moisture and hydration to the lips while safeguarding against environmental damage. This product is great to use as a preventative (or remedy) for acquiring dry lips.

PRODUCTS FOR GROOMS

1 | TOPPIK HAIR PERFECTING SYSTEM –

when used as directed, this tool kit instantly transforms the appearance of men (and women) that have very fine and/or thinning hair. The spray applicator releases hair-building fibers composed of keratin protein found naturally in real human hair that attach to existing hair follicles and settle on the scalp. The end result is hair that appears thicker, fuller, and more lush. For grooms that have challenges with thinning hair, this product is a lifesaver.

2 | LUNA ™ 2 FOR MEN – this

3-in-1 sonic face brush, preshaving, and anti-aging device is the newer and more improved version of the original LUNA™ for Men. Now equipped with 2 times the power, this device uses T-Sonic™ technology to unclog pores of 99.5% dirt and oil while eradicating dead skin cells – helping to prevent razor burn post-shaving and to leave the skin looking fresher, younger, and more toned. The backside of the device uses lower frequency pulsations aimed at reducing fine lines and superficial wrinkles. According to studies, 97% of men who use this device experience having more refreshed skin and a smoother shave.

3 | KIEHL’S MIDNIGHT RECOVERY CONCENTRATE

– to be applied in the evening on cleansed skin, this facial oil quickly absorbs and works through the night alongside the skin’s natural nocturnal activity to visibly restore the appearance of healthy skin by morning. This facial oil is great for men who do not have time (or the desire) to undergo a more complex skincare regimen, however still want to wake up in the morning to fresher-looking skin. As an added bonus, this lightweight serum applies smoothly and has a pleasant botanical aroma.

Wig Tips

by Melanie Harris

W

ant to rock a different look for your wedding without the commitment? Try a wig or clipped in extensions. When wearing a wig for your wedding it’s always good to do boxer braids underneath, which allows your wig to lay flat, which prevents the lumpy feeling underneath. If your wig is the same color as your hair, always leave a few baby hairs around your hairline that can be blended into the wig giving you a naturally blended look. Of course there are other options when your wig is a different color than your natural hair. You can use temporary spray color or paints to help blend the colors together. Should you have short hair you might want to consider enjoying the length and fullness without the commitment of a long term sew in weave by using clipped-in extensions as were used in this photo of our model Ashika. Clip-ins are also great for brides with thin or fine hair. Please be mindful that you must carve out time on your special day for hair styling, this is essential. Also, while cost may be a factor it is important to use real human hair for clip-in extensions and full wigs. It is also important to prep your hair the evening before as it saves time especially on curled styles. Its very easy, just pre curl them, pop them on, style and go! Tresemme’s new climate control hairspray is great for warm location weddings it helps to keep the hold, and the humidity at bay.

TOP MEN PRODUCTS We are far removed from the days when men use to take a razor and water to their face to shave and moisturize their skin with whatever was available. Take a walk in any mall and you too will realize that some of the major beauty companies that previously catered exclusively to women have now designed their own line of men grooming products to capitalize on this booming industry. Keeping all of this is in mind, the process of finding the right product can be overwhelming with thousands of men grooming products to choose. Turn on the television, or flip through your most popular magazine and note all the celebrities, professional athletes and models who benefit from a great grooming routine, and so can you. The following is my recommended list of the top ten products men should have in their grooming kits. This will help remove the guesswork and assist you in achieving a grooming regimen with benefits that you will appreciate for a lifetime. A few of these recommended products can perform more than one grooming task and allow you to be more efficient, well-groomed, and eliminate the hassle of carrying an oversized grooming kit. These products were selected based on a few factors such as hair length, climate, environment and a few of the most popular grooming looks.

POUR HOMME

UN

The

GROOMING

Manicure by Tee Hundley

W

hen you think of a manicure or pedicure it’s often associated with nail lacquer and what color lacquer will be chosen. Choosing a nail color is definitely the fun part of the service, but we forget what these services are; a manicure and pedicure literally mean “beauty service for the hands and feet.” In that beautifying service, there is complete nail care and skincare. Polishing is optional. Think of it as a complete regiment, similar to the face, where a good skincare regimen is necessary before makeup application. The idea that a perfect manicure and pedicure isn’t complete without the perfect polish is not necessarily true and this is what sometimes prevents men from taking part in these services, although they truly should. It is quite possible to give yourself a perfect manicure and pedicure service right in your own home. In just 20 minutes you can give yourself a full manicure by clipping, shaping, pushing cuticles, and moisturizing. A nice scrub can be added to hands and feet for extra care. Both men and women can find great products to perform their “at home services” with products such as the Regency Finish Collection Toenail Clipper by Tweezerman, which collects the clippings in a small case that can be emptied when you’re done. Another great tool by Tweezerman is the Push & Nail Cleaner which will push back cuticles and clean under the nails on hands and feet. A perfect DIY manicure and pedicure for men and women should consist of clipping and/or filing the nails. Nails are shaped either square with rounded sides, also known as squoval. It is important to note that rounded nails tend not to break as easily. Next use a cuticle oil such as Qtica Solid Gold Oil Gel around the cuticle area and use a pusher to gently push cuticles back. You can then moisturize the hands with a luxurious crème. We love L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. For feet, we suggest a mousse by Footlogix called Daily Maintenance Formula; they also have other formulas depending on your needs. After caring for your skin you can apply your favorite shade, (don’t forget the base coat!) or go natural with a coat of Formula X nail strengthener by Sephora. For gentlemen looking for a matte finish try Evolutionman pure matte nail varnish, a cosmetics line just for men. Performing your nail service weekly or bi-weekly will keep your hands and feet smooth and beautiful. Remember to scrub feet while in the shower between pedicures and use cuticle oil daily on hands and feet.

NON-TRADITIONAL! Heifer International for Wedding Gift Registry Courtesy of Heifer International by Chanelle Ashley Morris

WBM | 57

HOW DOES IT WORK? Here’s how it works, we empower families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity! Our approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools,

creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses. Heifer International provides the opportunity to honor a couple in need with a gift that lasts a lifetime. With honeybees for $30, a flock of chicks for $20 and a share of a goat for as little as $10, guests can help end world hunger all on your behalf. What better way to celebrate “happily ever after” than giving the same opportunity to someone else.

WHAT IS THE TRACK RECORD OF THE FAMILIES THAT BENEFIT FROM THIS? In its more than 70 years, Heifer has helped more than 25 million families – 115 million people – lift themselves out of hunger and poverty. (In fiscal year 2015, more than 3 million people were assisted directly and indirectly through our work.) To learn more about Heifer International and gift options, please visit: www.heifer.org/gift-catalog/ occasion/weddings.html

WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PROCESS AND HOW DO THE PEOPLE GET THE MONEY? Every gift made to Heifer International represents a gift to our total mission of purchasing and transporting food and income-producing animals, as well as providing intensive training in animal care; environmentally sound, sustainable farming; community development and global education. Each project begins with careful planning to assure it meets the needs of the families we serve and that it is technically feasible, economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sound. HOW SECURE IS THE SITE WHEN PEOPLE MAKE DONATIONS? Heifer’s platform is PCI Compliant, which means the website and its back-end systems and processes meet or exceed industry standards for security of credit cardholder data. Each interaction the user has with the system happens over an encrypted connection, providing users with protection as they log in and enter donation information. This platform already meets new PCI requirements for encryption that go into effect later this year.

Courtesy of Heifer International

You have found the perfect partner and planned the perfect wedding. Now it’s time to choose the perfect gift registry. Instead of taking the traditional route and registering with home goods stores, consider a life-changing alternative and register on behalf of newlyweds around the world who need it most through Heifer International. Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. Dan West was a farmer from the American Midwest and member of the Church of the Brethren who went to the front lines of the Spanish Civil War as an aid worker. His mission was to provide relief, but he soon discovered the meager single cup of milk rationed to the weary refugees once a day was not enough. And then he had a thought: What if they had not a cup, but a cow? That “teach a man to fish” philosophy is what drove West to found Heifer International. And now, nearly 70 years later, that philosophy still inspires their work to end world hunger and poverty throughout the world once and for all.

DAVID MONN

The Creator of All Spaces Beautiful by Myrdith Leon-McCormack Not everyone has the ability to transform a space into something other than what it was originally designed. There are those who have a gift for space and the ability to redesign rooms into something totally different, effortlessly. As we know we all were assigned certain gifts which are part of a persons DNA, and while they can be taught the process, the natural ability to “see” the finished product was given as a divine gift. I have had the pleasure of meeting David Monn on several occasions; these were brief interludes which provided enough information about his amazing design acumen and flair. When you are working on a product that speaks to luxury, quality and high standards, you only want those that have demonstrated abilities to bring your prize possession to market. Therefore, when it came time for us to plan our men/grooms issue, I knew it would also involve highlighting the men that have had great impact in the wedding industry that possess certain gifts we need and should appreciate. David Monn immediately came to mind, especially with his soon to be released book this fall. So for the sake of being ahead of the pack, we did a quick Q & A with him that we know you will enjoy. The Architect of Style from his own words...from the White House to Italy Biennale you will be in awe. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR SUCH A BRILLIANT CAREER CHOICE? My dream has always been to show how improving your environment can improve your life. I live to bring beauty to everyone, because I think it makes today a better day. Beauty has the power to calm the chaos of our everyday lives and soothe and replenish the spirit.

WBM | 59

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS WAS YOUR GIFT OR CALLING? Growing up humble (aka poor) in the small town of Fayetteville, PA as one of seven brothers and sisters in a small house gave me the gift of dreaming. I sought out a life I wanted, filling my own desire for beauty and understanding the difference it makes in my own life. As a child, I thumbed through magazines in the local pharmacy and I lost myself in a new world, a world I wanted to learn to create. WHAT ABOUT AN EVENT INSPIRES YOU, THE PEOPLE, THE SPACE, OR THE THEME? I don’t believe in themes. Weddings are weddings. The celebration we help create is an authentic reflection of each couple and their story. At David Monn, LLC we believe every detail is important, from the tea cup to the wall covering, it all must tie together in unity. We try to consciously honor the story of each client with our attention to color, light, scent, scale and details as tools to transform surroundings. DO YOU TAKE EVERY ASSIGNMENT THAT COMES TO YOU? No, if a potential client comes to us with a theme idea that is not related to anything in their past or present we are probably not the team for them. For example, we had one meeting with a couple that wanted a circus theme to their celebration. There was no connection to that idea and who the couple was. We can’t wait to get our hand on the copy of the book. I promise you it will be a masterpiece if it is anything like the room and spaces he creates.

Sweet Dreams of a

Cake Man

Cakeman Genius Ron Ben-Israel

by Myrdith Leon-McCormack

Life hasn’t always been sweet for Ron BenIsrael even though when you meet him you would think that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He is very much the person you want to be your best friend. He makes you feel comfortable and hopeful. His family story is inspiring and his good spirit is felt. His family history and their tragedies, and the various hurdles could have destroyed this young man. But Ron made sure he would not allow those ugly tragedies to define who he was destined to be. His passion for life can be felt from the moment you meet him. His spirit and interest in each individual he meets can be felt by the way he listens to you. I recall meeting him in his showroom in New York City and sitting across from him and pulling out my notebook, iPhone, as I prepared to gather information for this interview, that I was eager to get on the way. But to my surprise the tables were turned and he began interviewing me and asking

WBM | 61

me about World Bride Magazine and the wonderful people that work with us, as well as the inspiration behind the concept. I was a little taken back but I answered. His warm smile, and probably the champagne and cake he gave us definitely helped to ease the situation. He was genuinely listening to every word I said. And kept asking me questions with a familiar tone as though he had read a book about my life and wanted to confirm the accuracy of my story.

We laughed and shared special moments, having met him months prior at Tendencias Cartagena Bridal Week in Colombia. Our time together reminded me that it is this type of personality that every client should seek in hiring vendors; someone who genuinely loves people, is a listener, has an interest in getting to know about you, your background and how you arrived at this very special moment in your life. Someone with an energy that will transform things into a creative

pieced of art – never underestimate true energy and what it reflects. Ron Ben-Israel’s team was equally as nice, polite and sticklers for details. They were well organized and their space was immaculate. Presentation even for a slice of cake was wonderful. So as you make your way through vendors and do tastings ask yourself, is it enough to get someone that is doing their job or loves their craft and wants to share every bite life has to offer. We salute you, Ron Ben-Israel!

METROJOJO: From Your Point of View by Annalisa Arcoleo

“I

wished it was easier to find a wedding photographer. ‘So, I had the answer: Metrojojo!’” That’s the idea that led Jacob to create Metrojojo, the first wedding photography marketplace. Metrojojo’s mission is to make finding and booking the right wedding photographer easy. The team pre-screens photographers, lists bookable packages and pricing upfront, to hire only the best photographers anywhere in the world. One of the benefits of being invited

WBM | 63

to participate is when a photographer can’t pay Metrojojo to list them, and as Jacob says, “We don’t do pay for play, we do be incredible for play.” This makes Metrojojo a trusted marketplace worldwide, with clients and photographers in the US, Canada, the UK, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Romania, Brazil, France, and more. Couples can find the perfect photographer using Metrojojo by following these steps: 1- Create a free account and start viewing photographers. 2- Message the ones you like. 3- Book them.

And if you want to know more about a package, below are examples of real packages from the site: Bri Costello: Eight hours of coverage. 700-800 digital photographs delivered. Online proofing gallery delivered within six to eight weeks. Second shooter included. Two pre-wedding portrait sessions included. Frances Beatty: Ten hours of coverage. Online photo gallery. Second photographer included. Engagement session, a couple’s album, USB of high resolution images and a proofing gallery delivered within six to eight weeks. David Loi: Ten hours of coverage, a 30 page Italian handcrafted heirloom

album with sleeve. Two photographers to cover your event, and a bridal and engagement session. Digital negatives delivered for additional prints and a gallery to share with family and friends. Proofs available within 12 weeks. Let’s take a look! metrojojo.com. METROJOJO: FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER’S POINT OF VIEW WBM interviewed some of the photographers who work for Metrojojo and this is what they told us. Jaymi Britten: Metrojojo connects people directly to professional wedding photographers, it makes it a lot more convenient for people to search for local

photographers in their area, receive instant details including rates on photo packages, so clients can make fast decisions at the click of their fingertips! Frances Beatty: The Internet has definitely been a game changer for business. Metrojojo helps by being a one-stop-shop for wedding photographers, it makes it easier for the clients to compare packages and portfolios of photographers they’re interested in. William Bichara: The right photographer would be based on style and chemistry more than anything. Prices and packages can be negotiated or customized, but to me the couple needs

to feel something about the style of the photographer. I don’t think the style can be amended or negotiated. David Loi: You want to trust your photographer and the photographer needs to trust you. Ask lots of questions, no matter how small you think it might be. Be sure you’re both on the same page and things will flow well on your special day! Giorgos Elianos: During the ceremony I try to not be close to the couple so it is possible for them to feel free that they are alone during that special moment. After the ceremony I start the portrait photoshoot of the couple and change up the location. It’s time to have fun. Metrojojo: The easiest and more professional way to make your wedding pictures spectacular!

DE TA I L S

InvitationOnly by Myrdith Leon-McCormack

H

e popped the question, you accepted and now the planning begins. One of the key elements is inviting guests to the great day and the process involved. We didn’t want to leave it to chance so we called our friends at Papyrus Papers headquarters and asked them some tips on the procedure of sending out a proper invitation that your parents would be proud of. HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD YOU SEND THE SAVE THE DATES? Save the dates should be sent 4-6 months prior to the wedding. If it’s destination wedding, save the dates should be sent 6-8 months prior. WHEN DO YOU SEND THE ACTUAL INVITATIONS? The wedding invitation, reply card and any other component of the wedding invitation ensemble should be sent 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding. WHEN SHOULD GUESTS SEND BACK THEIR RSVP’S? Guests need to send the RSVP back by the requested date printed on the card. Typically, this 2-3 weeks prior to the wedding date, which allows enough time to get a final head count to the caterer and to complete seating arrangements. WHEN DO YOU SEND THE THANK YOU CARDS? You want to write the notes as soon as possible after gifts arrive. Each wedding gift should be acknowledged with a handwritten note within 3 months after the wedding or return from the honeymoon. DO PEOPLE STILL SEND OUT THANK YOU CARDS? Yes, absolutely. It’s one of the final steps in wrapping up the wedding. Family, friends and guests will be appreciative of your thoughtfulness – and perfect etiquette. Other final steps to wrapping up the wedding includes: sending wedding announcements to extended family and friends, creating the wedding album and printing personalized stationery with the couple’s name or initials. Mucci Confetti

by Annalisa Arcoleo

The sweetest wedding tradition is small, colorful and delicious. It’s the wedding confetti, and it has always been a symbol of special occasions: marriage, births, baptism and all other joyful celebrations of life. The Italian word confetti (and we are not talking about the colorful paper confetti) comes from the Latin verb “conficere,” meaning “be packaged,” enclosed in a layer of sugar and almond or another seed. One of the most long-established confetti manufacturers is Mucci Giovanni, based in Italy and known and enjoyed throughout the world. Mucci Giovanni is inspired by the metaphor of the seed hidden in the earth or in the woman, that will give fruit. That’s the reason why at the end of the wedding we give confetti to our guests, as a symbol of prosperity and fertility. The founder, Nicola Mucci, started this delectable creation in 1894 in Andria, Italy. After his apprenticeship in the celebrated Swiss Chocolate Caflish in Naples, he gave birth to his dream of opening his own laboratory. He started producing chocolate, candy and confetti using the excellent Andria almonds. To meet the numerous requests, he inaugurated elegant and chic cafes to taste the specialities of Mucci Giovanni; incorporating innovation and tradition helped to establish one of the most famous and valued confetti manufacturers in the world for more than a century. The tradition is still alive thanks to Nicola’s family who continue to work in the Mucci manufacturing plant, ensuring the best quality and commitment of the family’s traditions. Manuela is Nicola’s niece, and she is part of this tradition,

working in Mucci Giovanni with her family. She knows that confetti are loved by adults and children. She knows the key for the right selection: “I want to give my advice to brides with two simple words: QUALITY and UNIQUENESS. By following this, you and your guests we will never be disappointed, not only regarding your choice of confetti; our slogan is: Simply Unique.” Manuela showed us how they prepared their delicious confetti in a large copper bowl with mechanical traction, then the master confectioner follows day by day all phases of processing of the products, from the sugar coating to the coloration. BELOW IS THE TIMELINE OF MUCCI CREATIONS. 1920: Mandorla Imperiale The unique confetti made with the amazing peeled almond from Bari, covered by a layer of white chocolate and enrobed in a thin layer of sugar. For the first time an almond was covered in chocolate prior to pelleting, innovating the classical recipe of the confetti made just with almonds and sugar: it was a triumph! 1930: Tenerelli An exquisite dragee made with high quality almond from Toritto and with IGP (Identità Geografica Protetta (Protected Geographical Indication)) hazelnuts from Piedmont, covered with a double layer of chocolate and veiled in a thin layer of lightly colored sugar coating. Chocolate of highest quality, worked with butter and cocoa of Central America, the prestigious Sicilian almond “Pizzuta di Avola,” pistachios from Bromonte, Criollo cocoa beans

from Perù with only natural aromas and colors: only the best products for the best quality. Mandorla Imperiale and Tenerelli represent the history and tradition of Mucci confetti. But there are other wonderful creations desired all over the world, such as “Regina Elizabeth” and “Monnalisa,” which have found great success as part of the wedding celebrations, thanks to their refinement, variety of color and delicious flavor. Another well-loved creation is the chocolate dragees filled with liquor or coffee, crispy or truffled. Over 120 years of excellent activity, Mucci Giovanni received numerous awards that attest to the superior quality of its products: respectful of original recipes, high quality and homemade. Traditions and knowledge are preserved in the Mucci Giovanni Museum, and it is recognized by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture as a place of particular significants. Mucci Giovanni has clients from North America, Japan, Europe, China and some countries of UAE. Foreign clients love Italian products: Manuela says, “They adore Italian products and how they symbolize excellence. And Mucci Giovanni often listens to their particular requests in order to satisfy their requirements. In fact, we are going to obtain Halal and Kosher certifications for some of our products, designed respectively for Muslims and Jews.” If you are looking for a special confetti to surprise your guests or if you want to know more about the wonderful world of Mucci Confetti, please visit their website: www.muccigiovanni.it.

What to do when

THE HONEY is not so sweet after the honeymoon by Michelle Lowe

O

ne of the things we fail to recognize is the after-thehoneymoon effect – when the honey is not so sweet. We spend far too much time focused on the wedding, then the honeymoon, then moving in together and setting up your home that we often forget about the excitement we bring to each other. So, as time goes on stress comes out to play whether it’s a new job, a new baby, a new car, the bills, rent/mortgage – should I go on? This all has to be delicately balanced with your love in order to keep your relationship afloat. Too often, long hours at work, the children and the everyday stuff gets in the way of lovemaking and intimacy and we tend to brush it aside. We are too tired, burned out, and we no longer make each other a priority. But your relationship is the foundation of all things to follow, and by inadvertently moving lovemaking and pillow talk to the end of the list could be the beginning of the end of your relationship. Part of the problem is we expect our significant other to be all things to us. We expect them to be our sounding boards, finance managers, cheerleaders, lovers, homemakers and everything else. But honestly, can you be all things to another person? In other words, “am I enough for you?” The answer is no. You are heading down the road of disaster if you expect one person to fulfill your every need. We each need an outlet from each other and for ourselves. This could be a hobby, a friend, a place of worship, or perhaps a class where you learn how to become intimate with each other. Spend time loving each other in ways that allow you sheer enjoyment aside from the “day-to-day baggage” that wears you down. Here are a few simple tips to incorporate, which may inject a little love when you least expect it.

WBM | 89

TIP #1

Greet each other at home and sit in silence, hugging, holding hands or just laying close to each other for five minutes – this will help you to connect. Take this a step further and lean forehead to forehead and whisper affirmations of what makes you love the other person so much. “You make me laugh and it makes me so happy.” “You always make me feel so loved,” etc.

TIP #2

Have a ten minute kissing session – where you practice different types of kissing and exploring with each others tongues. It’s very sensual.

TIP #3

Leave each other notes of love; under the pillow, in the fridge, in their sock drawer. Write a sentence or a paragraph from a poem, on scented paper.

TIP #4

Send your loved one a postcard when you travel, so they know you are still in their thoughts. Try www.touchnote. com, you can take a photo with your smartphone, write and send the postcard directly from your phone via this app.

TIP #5

Surprise your loved one with their favorite dessert, chocolate or cookies, wrapped. Who doesn’t love a little something sweet?

The Wedding From The

GROOMS PERSPECTIVE

Here’s What You Need To Know After She Says Yes.

THE ESSENTIALS OF PLANNING A WEDDING Budget for Everything: Money is the root of all evil. No, but for sure you will have an evil bride on your hands if there is not enough money for the wedding of her dreams; a budget is essential when planning a wedding. First determine the “all-in” amount which represents how much money will be allocated for the wedding. Similar to a working budget, accurately detail where the money is spent; this will help determine how close you are to achieving your financial goal by staying within the budget. This is where you will win major brownie points. The wedding planning may or may not be a stressful time, but if it is stressful, be the rock she needs. Allow her to vent, cry and yell (at you for no good reason), even offer to rub her feet. In general, show her beyond a shadow of a doubt you are there for her – be her consistent supporter. It’s Ok to Express Your Vision of the Wedding: Trust me, one of the biggest complaints from the bride is the groom is not interested in the details of planning the wedding; she feels the groom believes all he has to do is show up the day of the wedding. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Today’s groom wants to be an active participant in planning the wedding, and the bride wants the groom to be an active participant in planning the wedding. The most memorable weddings reflect the sentiment, religion, and taste of both participants – it’s generally never the

sole decision of just the bride or just the groom. Manage Your Groomsmen: Take responsibility of your groomsmen. After you and your bride discuss the groomsmen attire, volunteer to oversee the details. List everything you need to do including managing rentals, fittings and knowing exactly what your groomsmen are expected to do the day of the wedding. The Bachelor Party: You Are Responsible for Your Actions. You know exactly how you envision your bachelor party. That’s fine – just keep in mind how delicate this issue can be. Be mindful, you will be held responsible for your actions so don’t do anything you may regret. Two Families and a Wedding = One Blended Family: You understand the importance of a happy wife and want to extend the same sentiment to your new family: support and attend prewedding family gatherings; discuss any uneasiness or issues you may have with your bride’s family, and allow your bride to freely do the same; and be the conduit for peace, love and happiness within the new blended family. All in all, you will find that planning a wedding may mirror real-life situations. Better yet, it will reveal how you handle real-life situations. Remember: keep the lines of communication open. Understand your actions not only affect you but will also affect your bride and vice versa. Support is expected as it is required. Financial literacy is a must from both sides but is generally expected from the groom. Solid leadership qualities steeped in love, compassion, trust and financial health are not only the essentials of planning a wedding but are the floor plans for a healthy, successful and happy marriage.

TIPS: DUTIES OF THE GROOMSMAN - Supports, advises and listens to any pre-wedding nervousness - Assists in choosing the groomsmen attire - Attends all pre-wedding events (engagement parties, co-ed showers, bachelor party, and rehearsal dinner) - Helps to plan and pay for the bachelor party - Groomsmen and bridesmaids help decorate the getaway car - Gives an engagement and wedding present - Assists the groom in dressing on the day of the wedding - Escorts guests to their seats if the groom does not have ushers - Holds the ring during the ceremony - Is expected to dance with bridesmaids and single female guests at the wedding - Helps carry gifts and personal items after the wedding DUTIES OF THE USHERS Greet guests: the first smiling faces the guests will see Distribute programs Escort guest to their seats May prepare ceremony location (arrange chairs, test sound system, etc.) Typically anything needed so the bride can walk down the aisle stress free HOW MANY USHERS SHOULD YOU HAVE? It is customary to have one usher for every 50 guests but it’s considerate to have two per every 50 guest.

our childhood friend finally popped the question to the love of his life, and you are now one of the official best men of his wedding. Don’t even think you will only have to plan or enjoy the bachelor party. No, no, no. This is more than a small role; you are responsible for making your best friend’s wedding weekend a fun and memorable adventure. Below are a few ideas we had planned during an actual wedding weekend, and they were a big hit! - As you begin to help plan the party, consider how you could best assist the groom in creating the music playlist for the special occasion. Take time to recover memories you have enjoyed together; this will inspire you with lots of titles from entire spectrum of music and events from Rock to Pop music. Do not forget to include the weekend DJ and ask him/ her to add these tunes to the party-timeline.

HEY BESTMEN:

The Groom! by Muriel Saldalamacchia

- Be involved in the ceremony – such a great opportunity to be an active witness of the wedding. Join the preparative with the wedding officiant, ask what portion of the wedding ceremony you would be able to share in, and work on the segment you will be allowed to create. - Get closer to the maids of honor to coordinate your wedding outfits perfectly. It is also a way to meet them before the wedding – this is priceless to energize the ambiance between you both for the entire wedding weekend. - Prepare a surprise (with the maids of honor; why not!) that will occur during the party. It could be a dance show, or a specific collective toast. This is one of the best ways to create great and unique memories, which you could record on video. - Plan a unique photo shoot just after the ceremony and just before the cocktail hour. As an example: perhaps you are all wearing particularly outlandish socks that anyone can imagine – well show them while having fun in a photo shoot.

- Finally, create/organize a “Gentlemen’s Only” corner where you could spend time to smoke a cigar, or drink whiskey; be aware to offer different cigars. Do not forget to light up the space: furnish it with a leather sofa and a bar table. After all, this is all about the gentlemen, right?

Coasting

Adriatic through the

Photography by Toni Smailagic

A

llow yourself the opportunity to linger between the thousands of islands on the coast of the Adriatic to the juxtaposed capital, Zagreb, just once in your lifetime – and I can guarantee you’ll crave a return. I tend to over-romanticize every place I travel and having lived and visited dozens of countries around the world, I can’t explain the overwhelming feeling of euphoria that Croatia sparks. You’re stepping into a cobblestoned fairytale; the kind that old Disney movies promised with flowers on every window sill, rolling hills dotted with villages away in the mountains. Turquoise waterfalls in the Plitvice Lakes and vineyards spotted throughout all four regions of the country. The summer months, and more specifically August, turns Croatia into a mecca for tourist and locals alike. The primary region for tourism is on the coast and is known as Dalmatia. Most recently highlighted through the filming of Game of Thrones in the medieval town of Dubrovnik. Although Dubrovnik is absolutely breathtaking, it’s not an area for those seeking solitude and tranquility in the summer months. Instead, towns like Zadar, Split, Porec, or Vodice have mass tourism, but also options for secluded beaches. Yachting / Boating plays a huge role on the coast, and also allows local restaurants access to fresh fish every single day. No worries for those on a budget, as a small private boat rental in towns like Vodice, is roughly $80 a day. The mere thought of returning to sail to a private island for yourself and your loved one, places me in an immediate dream-like state.

WBM | 119

120 | WBM

Personally, the region that resonates most with me lies in the northwest peninsula stuck between Croatia and Italy, known as Istria. The mash-up of cultures promises a decadent array of tastes and sounds. Providing fresh pastas and olive oils in an Italian fashion contrasted with the Croatian Zubatac (a regional white fish), in the midst of the mountains is indescribable. I distinctly remember being told about Motovun on the drive from Zagreb and how I’m in for a true treat. The medieval town sits on top of a mountain surrounded by flower fields. The road winds around the mountain, elevating your view to the neighboring towns with a 360-degree view of this unique contrast between azure sky and lime green fields. To date, I have never experienced a city more in tune with my ideal image of beauty. I understand completely why the rich and famous rent the town for weddings, specifically. Before I make travel arrangements, I have a travel trick I use for budgeting in any city by researching the average annual salary of workers in the country; Croatia’s being $12,000. From that alone, it should give you a pretty good idea of what you should expect to spend on food, travel and any recreational activities. Even in peak season in the most populated areas, expect to spend a fraction of what you’d spend in Florida, and even more so in NYC. You’ll spot a trend of mass alcohol consumption in the entire Balkan region of Europe and specifically one spirit that you can’t leave without trying; rakija (regional brandy). Everything is home grown and won’t cost you more than $3 in 99% of the country. Cigarettes and coffee are engrained in the culture, so expect to find cafés in every corner filled with political debates and sarcastic humor.

WBM | 121

122 | WBM

No city reigns supreme in relation to café culture, other than the capital, Zagreb. Ban Jelacic is the main square and regardless of the season, there’s never a slow day. This is where you’ll find true locals who live and work in a city that has metropolitan work appeal but decorated by historic architecture. As a perfect meeting point, my suggestion is to walk 2 blocks over to Tomiceva street, grab a hazelnut ice cream cone from the regional favorite, Vincek, stop by and see the historic Drazen’s Clock Shop and take the funicular ride that takes you into gornji grad (upper city). This is the most scenic area of the city and the second you step off the funicular you’ll be greeted by birds, stringed instruments, and pastel hues. Stroll through the cobblestone alleys and finish your day by taking a trip to the Museum of Broken Relationships – where people all over the world donate the last piece of memorabilia of an expired relationship with the story of how it ended. Each city and town requires a book of explanations, but if my words don’t appeal to your idea of the perfect honeymoon location, I hope that the visual component does. I believe if you fall in love with something, your immediate reaction is to share it and hope someone else finds the same elements of bliss that you found in a country tucked away between fig trees and the sea breeze.

Pure Class The Art of

AT THE HOTEL ARTS BARCELONA

By Remi James

rom the moment I looked up at this slick, artistic and very tall hotel, I knew I was somewhere special. The Hotel Arts Barcelona is one of the most iconic and modern hotels that I have ever stayed at in Europe. I had a fabulous executive suite with large panoramic windows. You cannot help but be dazzled by the aqua sea at the Barceloneta beach; it really reminds me of the Copacabana beach in Rio. A number of the rooms have grand views of the vibrant, colorful, Catalan city and Frank Gehry’s modern Gold Fish sculpture known as Peix, which overlooks the waterfront of the Olympic Marina. The executive suites have separate living room areas with spacious luxury bathrooms and sumptuous amenities, which is expected from a sister hotel of the Ritz-Carlton. My suite was so luxurious; as soon as I closed the doors I felt a strong sense of being wrapped up in a tranquil cocoon. I am a lady that’s never too far from a spa, and 43 The Spa offers a vast amount of facilities and services, starting from fully equipped treatment suites, a hydrotherapy pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, hammam and my favorite thing on

a HOT Spanish day: an ice fountain. Now if that wasn’t enough, you can relax in an open-air terrace with calming views of the sea. So relaxing! Hotel Arts Barcelona is a magnificent choice to stay in Barcelona. It has an enormous range of things to enjoy and see in or near the hotel. From the great selection of restaurants like Spanish tapas to delicious Thai cuisine, nightclubs, bars, beaches, great one-of-a-kind finds for unique fashionable items, and let’s not forget the best part of all — the rich culture and history! Hotel Arts Barcelona isn’t too far from the famously unfinished La Sagrada Família Church by Antoni Gaudí. Or perhaps you would like to soak up the atmosphere on the busy streets of Las Ramblas or enjoy the Picasso Museum. Whatever your selection, most people say Catalonia and Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist European destinations. Once you make the decision to travel there, I am pretty sure you will understand why everyone raves about this magnificent region. Adiós. Hotel Arts Barcelona www.hotelartsbarcelona.com

am showing my age here … but if you have ever watched the classic movie, There’s Something About Mary, I’m hoping it will help you understand what I mean by saying “There’s something about Mykonos.” Mykonos is one of the top European destinations; it’s what St Barth is to the Caribbean. This cosmopolitan, beautiful island will hypnotize you with its glamour and allure. Pristine white Grecian houses with accents of blue on the windows, doors and chimneys, narrow white-washed cobbled streets, quaint restaurants and cafes, stunning white churches and let’s not forget the prominent white windmills. Mykonos has many magical moments, but one of the most popular things to do is go to Little Venice and watch the enchanting sunset. Many people say that it has one of the most spectacular sunsets of the Greek Islands. Now I’m a lady that normally loves staying at big luxurious hotels, however, in Mykonos the majority of the hotels are boutique, apartments or villas. I had the pleasure of staying at the Myconian Ambassador hotel. This delightful hotel overlooks the famous Platis Yalos beach and is just a few minutes’ walk to the sandy shore. The Myconian Ambassador is an elegant boutique five-star hotel. I stayed in the honeymoon suite, which comes with its own outdoor Jacuzzi, overlooking breathtaking views of the sea. White stylish rooms with hints of black and cream appoint the room and provide a light and airy feel. This open-plan suite creates a seamless flow between the bedroom and the bathroom, very romantic — hence the name the Passion Suite!

One of the highlights of my stay was the Thalasso Spa, which features the natural St Barth products from the Caribbean. You are sure to find something to help you unwind. Three different indoor sea-water pools, a sauna and steam room, and by the end of the session my skin felt smooth as a baby’s bottom! Let’s talk champagne and breakfast. The Myconian Ambassador’s exquisite, Mediterranean breakfast was phenomenal, with such an array of food from eggs, salmon, chicken, Greek salad, and assortment of delicious cakes and champagne on tap. What a fantastic way to start the day! Mykonos is a superb place to go for honeymooners or other special occasions, or a fun-filled holiday. Whatever the reason, I’m pretty sure Mykonos will steal your heart too, and then you’ll be able to join me in saying, “There’s something about Mykonos!”

HOTEL

St. Regis

by Myrdith Leon-McCormack

T

he story of the St. Regis is a fine tale and completely captivating. Socialite John Jacob Astor is the visionary behind the St. Regis Hotel which proudly sits on the corner of 5th Avenue and 55th Streetsmere steps from De Beers Diamonds, and Central Park. We all are very much aware of the symbolism that fills each boutique and restaurant along this magnificent mile that captivates our imagination and interest. However, what is far more captivating is the story of the Astor family and their legendary lifestyle and expansive parties. Their invitations were sent to the proverbial who’s who on the Registry lists. The St. Regis is the quintessential example of quality and class. The days of fine crystal and exquisite florals still provide an elegant backdrop for those with the most discerning tastes. Today personal service is the most sought-after service and is still the standard. I was very curious as a young girl, observing this magnificent structure and the family that created it. And what makes some people understand how to build a legacy. Does it all rely on unwavering ambition and very hard work and what they did to have their legacy live on even after death. I have always been intrigued by the desire for so many to spend so much on what we call the basics in life, food and shelter. Why was it so important to belong to the right circle, what did it represent? As you walk down the streets of Manhattan’s 5th Avenue, and look at the brilliant structures that attract people from all over the world it is the love of history and the fascinating history of the elite. For those of you who watch modern movies such as Gossip Girls, Devil Wears Prada to name a few, which have been filmed in the grand space of the St. Regis Hotel, it is those movies that continues to keep those legacies alive and for many, accessible. We are sending out these special notice to remind us of those wonderful places that are part of American history that continues to live on. We invite you to visit the St. Regis and dine in its legendary restaurants. The beautifully decor space begins from the entrance of the hotel, to the lobby, its great gift shop, to its bar. You are greeted by the doorman and from there begins the experience. Once you can get passed the elegantly designed lobby, every request will be handled with loving care by each and every staff member. The suites are magnificent and we highly recommend their honeymoon suites; all of which were designed by several of our favorite brand names Dior, Bentley, Tiffany are by far the attractions to

the hotel. But make no mistake the others spaces are well worth your time and investment. The St. Regis is a dream built on aspiration and hard work. John Astor amassed his wealth and legacy after leaving his home in Germany with his beloved wife. Their mutual respect, trust and love for each other brought them to America where they built their names and became one of the most wealthiest families and true empires; their love and legacy is the very essence of this hotel and what can become a part of your history when you host your wedding at St. Regis.

HOTEL

Carlyle by Myrdith Leon-McCormack

T

This iconic address called The Carlyle, has been home to some of the most famous and legendary figures, from Hollywood super stars, to music legends, presidents, royal families, ambassadors and dignitaries both domestic and around the world. In the late ‘60s The Carlyle was home to legendary jazz icon Bobby Short who entertained business titans and high rollers with his voice and piano playing. The Cafe Carlyle was his home. For all you jazz lovers, you will appreciate this beyond your imagination. I had the honor of being introduced to The Carlyle Hotel some 15 plus years ago, when I was a young whipper snapper, when Kitt Shapiro, the daughter of the late Eartha Kitt hired me off the set of a photo shoot to

give her mother a manicure and pedicure. I was in awe then of the exquisite lobby, decor and even today I feel the same way when I walk in there. I still have the post card inviting guests to Eartha Kitt’s upcoming show when she was to perform at the hotel. Miss Eartha Kitt was one of the most amazing entertainers, and I had the distinct honor to literally sit at her feet and listen to stories and ask a dozen questions at the Carlyle Hotel. I later returned to this iconic address to celebrate the life and philanthropic work of legendary bassist Ron Carter. A dinner served for 25 on the very night the Anna Wintour’s Met Gala was taking place, Rhianna would bring every paparazzi to the streets waiting to snap a picture of her...among other guests that were there. Wow. I am certain you are asking what do these memories have to do with your wedding? The idea of creating memories is very important and this article is to inspire you to create your own memories that will last a lifetime. It is to encourage you to find a place that moves heaven and earth for you, that will cater to your every need for that day or weekend; it is a place that you will want to return to for a special anniversary or romantic get-away. The hotel has 188 rooms, beautifully designed, and the staff there is more likely to treat you like a family member returning home, than a stranger checking in for the first time. The Central Park Tower Suite, has one of the most magnificent views and towers over the city, giving you a spectacular view of the park that is breathtaking. It makes for a wonderful space to have a lovely soiree for your new in-laws, wedding party, to enjoy before the big day. There are also fabulous dining rooms on the ground floor to share the wonderful experience with your traveling guests that will for sure be memorable. The Carlyle’s rich, elegant history is the very reason why it can be considered one of the must-have addresses in one’s lifetime. It is everything you have imagined it to be.

HOTEL

hen East meets West, what do you get? The Pierre Hotel. This landmark hotel was designed in 1930 by Shultze and Weaver. It is now managed by Taj Hotels and recently underwent a $100 million dollar renovation, which included suites, ballrooms, public and event space, and they added a new restaurant and bar for your dining pleasure. As you glide through the gorgeous lobby, it is the appetizer of the hotel, offering rare opulence of a palace. The grand suites are named after people who were influential in the hotel’s history. The suites’ magnificent views give each guest a panoramic view of the city, from Central Park, the famous Fifth Avenue with all its luxury shops. For the brides in search of the perfect dress, you have a number of boutiques just steps away from your New York address during your stay at the Pierre Hotel from specialty boutiques to the world renown Bergdorf Goodman. The Rutando Room is the most iconic ballroom that can host your whole wedding ceremony to your reception all in one delicious space. It is understandable why The Pierre Hotel has earned its 5 Star 5 Diamond for 2016. The brilliantly designed decor that celebrates both European and Indian decor will leave you spellbounded. For in-room or in one of the restaurants you and your guest will marvel at the wonderfully diverse cuisines that can entice even the most discriminating palate. The hotel is said to host between 80 to 100 wedding per year. It is extraordinary and wise to host only one wedding at a time giving each couple their undivided attention for exceptional services that go beyond your imagination. Once you enter the hotel you will find yourself surrounded by the depth of the beauty of both cultures. Almost forgetting you are in New York, the city that never sleeps.

YOUR PALACE Awaits You by Myrdith Leon-McCormack

Your palace awaits you. This urban oasis is a prestigious hotel in the heart of Manhattan several feet away from the famous Central Park by the famous Fifth Avenue. The Kadouri Family built and maintained a legacy of excellence that is seen and felt on the property from the moment you arrive. The Kadouri’s legacy began in the Far East in the late 19th century. They built their name and wealth in Shanghai and expanded it globally while maintaining the standard of opulence, luxury and sophistication that attracted societies most influential until today. It is our pleasure to share the joys of our experience at this

historic hotel and amazing views. The Peninsula Hotel offers an unprecedented wedding experience that will have your guests in awe. The view of Manhattan’s glittering skyline is an experience that will leave your guests wanting to return. The diverse and gracious staff is at your beck and call to grant your smallest wish upon your arrival. This well trained staff is like none I have seen. As I walk through the hallways of the hotel and take in its historical tale, I dare ask the question to some of the members of the staff: how long have they been employed by the hotel, and how they feel about the property; looking me in the eyes, and a bit taken aback by the

question, each responded with a smile and assured me their time has been a wonderful experience with the hotel and its guests. As a guest who may choose to have their wedding at the hotel you have the option of hosting the ceremony and reception on the roof top, taking over the entire space, or one of their lavish ballrooms. The grand staircase leading to the hotel lobby serves as an amazing backdrop for quintessential photographs to commemorate your nuptials. The hotel is fully equipped to

WBM | 133

entertain your guests during their stay with full restaurants, for both traditional high tea to a wonderful fully stocked bar for a wonderful cocktail party with the capabilities of keeping it intimate for a smaller group, if you prefer. To my surprise for a hotel to be in the heart of the busy Fifth Avenue the word tranquility would not be the first word I would think of to describe The Peninsula Hotel, but I find it is the only word that would describe my experience as I walk through the hotel, spa, and hair salon all located within the walls of the hotel. The

warm reception we received by each of its staff seemed genuine— it felt warm. The spacious suites are perfect for a bride to get ready with her bridal party and family without feeling cramped and overwhelmed. Its decor is well designed for romantic honeymoon stay, after it is all said and done. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to visit the Peninsula Hotel, whether in New York City, or its latest addition to the empire The Peninsula Hotel Paris which we are looking forward to visiting in the immediate future.

Marco Gallotta

T

By Annalisa Arcoleo

here are so many different styles of art in the world, and it’s always a pleasure for the eyes and mind to discover something new. Our houses are full of pictures, paintings, but maybe we are looking for something new to decorate. It’s not so easy to find something extraordinary, right? To grooms and brides who are preparing their new home, to guests who are looking for a special wedding gift or to art lovers, I want to introduce you to a special form of art called papercutting, and the works of the phenomenal international artist Marco Gallotta, who has enticed many people worldwide. Marco Gallotta was born in Battipaglia, a town in the province of Salerno, in the southwestern part of Italy. He discovered his passion for art thanks to his father. “I remember getting excited about art since being exposed to the museums of Europe by my father. He loved art and would always tell me interesting anecdotes about artists, things that you wouldn’t find in art history books. We traveled a lot and visited all the major museums throughout Europe as well as small galleries in the most random spots.” Growing up in a country full of history and culture such as Italy means developing a high sensitivity to beauty; and this talent led Marco to New York City in 1998, where he attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and earned a bachelor’s degree in illustration. While he was still in school, he started working as a freelance illustrator for Nike. While still living in New York, Marco completely connected to his love for art: “I came here for love. I met my wife Sabrina in Italy while she

WBM | 139

was studying for a semester abroad. Sabrina, a native New Yorker, asked me to join her when it was time for her to go back. I have been living here ever since.” Love for art and for his wife makes Marco a passionate person, and very special. His art connects to love, beauty and nature, the strength of Marco’s work is his high conceptualization of beauty and his rare talent to transform something abstract into something real. Nature and Man are the greatest inspiration, the relationship between the individual and nature is inseparable because man IS nature, and that’s what Marco does, brings them together in a harmonious way. Today, he is a highly regarded artist in this amazing style of artistry. “Papercutting is the art of cutting paper. My technique is a culmination of continuous research and experimentation. Since the beginning of my career, my subjects were the result of the interaction between physical and geometrical shapes. Faces, bodies and objects were created using geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles and rectangles. The rigid shapes later became irregular and organic, enriched with soft curves alternating with sharp angles. From there, I developed the idea of breaking down these complex subjects with carvings. I let myself be guided by everything around me, and I shaped the human and natural material with a great sense of imagination. I work mainly with photos and paper that I carve with a scalpel, with surgical precision. What emerges is a series of overlapping images, to which I sometimes add layers of color and wax, creating uneven and interesting surfaces.” Marco’s talent has led him to work with international clients in Italy, Spain, Belgium and the United States, clients which include celebrities. “I was recently asked to create a piece for actor Will Smith. The first time I met Will Smith was in 2007 during the filming of the movie I Am Legend.” A few months later, I was

Gentlemen LOVE to Read invited to the premiere of the movie, where I had the opportunity to see him. On that occasion, the actor told me he had seen my work and that one day he and I would have to discuss art. After eight years and numerous meetings, I created a special piece for him. And in 2015, on a freezing January day, I was invited on the set of one of his most recent productions to present him with a portrait. What’s more, six months earlier I had received a call from a member of Will Smith’s staff. The actor was facing a very challenging role and the character he played required intense concentration. Will Smith, I was told, needed to surround himself with “beautiful things” to relieve the pressure that he was under while shooting. To that end, I was given the task of enriching the walls of his apartment and even his trailer on the set of the film with ten works, personally selected by the actor.” As a super fan of Will Smith, I enjoyed hearing Marco’s experience. And it was quite apparent that he has great satisfaction in his career, a career that he continues to nurture with diverse projects: he is working on a series of portraits, some of them in collaboration with other artists, and he is also working with an Italian fashion house to create a print inspired by his art. WBM encourages you to take the opportunity to view some of his works – they are astonishing!
