There are also functions for error handling, allowing novice programmers to take care of errors such as collisions. By simplifying the typically complex programming associated with handling errors, Wizard easy programming can help any robot user develop highly effective robot programs. “Flexible and easy-to-use, collaborative robots are enabling small businesses to experience the benefits of robots worldwide. To enable first-time robot users to realize the possibilities of automation we’ve reduced the learning curve for new users by simplifying the programming

of the Single-Arm YuMi with our new Wizard tool. This will help reduce the cost, time and skills required to implement collaborative automation in a wide range of workplaces, which may lack a dedicated engineering or automation programming resource,” said Andie Zhang, ABB’s Global Product Manager for Collaborative Robotics. Unlike other types of easy programming software, Wizard easy programming is converted in real time into ABB’s RAPID programming language, giving Wizard easy programming the advantage to support advanced robot functions.

Complex robot programs such as for assembly tasks can be created by skilled robot programmers and then turned into a Wizard program for novice robot users to use and operate. Wizard is available as a preinstalled application on the FlexPendant device for all new Single-Arm YuMi robots after its release at the end of March. The Wizard easy programming software is available for free and the new software will also be made available to existing YuMi customers in the form of a free add-in that can be installed via RobotStudio to the FlexPendant.

BELTS INSTEAD OF GEARBOX: CONTINENTAL EQUIPS GOLDWIND WIND TURBINES WITH EFFICIENT DRIVE BELTS • New approaches: belts replace gearboxes in unique patented design in nacelle • Investment: Continental has expanded timing belt production at its Dannenberg site for €2 million

Offshore wind turbines have to withstand the salty sea air.

T

echnology company Continental is equipping the wind turbines made by Chinese manufacturer Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology with drive belts. In the unique and patented construction, the belts manufactured at the Dannenberg location in Germany allow the rotor blades to be adjusted at any time without the aid of gears or hydraulics. 8

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Continental engineers used an optimal combination of two tried-and-tested timing belt technologies to develop the belts. Back in 2018, Continental invested around €2 million in a new facility at the site in Lower Saxony to meet the Chinese company’s annual demand for over 100 kilometers of drive belts.

Timing belts as an efficient alternative to complex gearboxes Goldwind is one of the few providers on the market to use a drive without a gearbox to adjust the blades, which is becoming vital to be able to respond flexibly to changing wind strengths. “Goldwind relies on timing belts,” says Rolf Marwede, who heads Continental’s location in Dannenberg.

In addition to drive belts, Continental supplies mounting elements, films for reducing wind resistance and hydraulic lines for the wind turbines. “There are some advantages to this. For instance, the system is less complex and therefore less prone to vibrations and disturbances at the top of the nacelle. Our belts are also extremely low-wear and durable.” The belts provided by Continental do not require any oil for lubrication and are very low-maintenance overall and also largely corrosionresistant. In offshore wind turbines in particular, this last point presents a major advantage over conventional metal designs that are permanently exposed to salty sea air. “In comparison with gearbox solutions, a simpler design that uses drive belts is also more cost-effective and more efficient in the long term,” says Marwede. If there is a defect, the system can also be repaired very quickly because only the belt needs to be replaced, not the whole gearbox.

Galvanized steel cords are integrated into the belt’s interior and coated with polyurethane, which furnishes both the teeth and the back of the belt and forms an outstanding connection with the tension member. Polyurethane is particularly abrasion-resistant. The two opposing impact directions of the steel cords and their strands result in neutral running properties, making the belts extremely resilient. It is not uncommon for there to be around 12 million reverse bending cycles.

Continental But what makes the belts used by Goldwind so unique is the special fabric, which is manufactured at Continental’s location in Northeim. The specialist in drive belts is making use of its Synchrochain technology expertise for this application. “The fabric reduces wear and absorbs noise and also provides a much more stable structure for the timing belt. This enables us to significantly improve the belt’s performance yet further,” explains Marwede. The fabric reinforces the teeth and improves run-in behavior, which in turn boosts efficiency. “Ultimately, we have brought together two product groups to develop the ideal solution for Goldwind’s application.” Competence Center Dannenberg provides capacity for future production expansions Continental manufactures the belts for Goldwind at its Dannenberg site, which is a competence center for the production of polyurethane belts within the company. The technology company installed a new facility for this very purpose last year. The hall out of which the facility operates, which was newly built in 2017, offers space for further production expansion.

The best of two product groups combined For Goldwind, it was important to develop a low-maintenance and simpler alternative to the conventional gearbox system. The chosen belt solution was an exact match for these requirements and is based on Continental’s Synchrodrive technology.

To meet Goldwind’s demand, Continental has invested around €2 million in a new facility in Dannenberg.

The timing belt fabric reduces wear and noise and ensures a stable structure. “At a single location, we can not only offer Synchrodrive and Synchrochain belts, but also combine both product types with each other – just like in Goldwind’s application. has never been done before and makes us a much more effective partner,” sums up Marwede. Wind as a clean alternative and ideal complement to other energy sources Continental therefore sees its partnership with Goldwind as an important cornerstone on which to further develop its focus on the

topics of sustainability and resource conservation. In addition to drive belts, the company supplies the wind turbine manufacturer with mounting elements, films for reducing wind resistance, and hydraulic lines. Wind is an unlimited resource. Wind turbines are considered clean, with the wind power they provide being the ideal complement to other energy sources. By the end of 2019, wind turbines with a total output of around 650 gigawatts had been installed around the world. By way of comparison, 40 gigawatts would be enough to supply electricity to

every household in Germany. With installed power of well over 200 gigawatts, China is by far the world’s largest wind market. Continental develops pioneering technologies and services for sustainable and connected mobility of people and their goods. Founded in 1871, the technology company offers safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable solutions for vehicles, machines, traffic and transportation. In 2019, Continental generated sales of €44.5 billion and currently employs about 240,000 people in 59 countries and markets.

The belts from Continental allow the rotor blades to be adjusted without the aid of gears or hydraulics. 10

Ziehl - Abegg

STRONG GROWTH IN ALL MARKETS “2019 has been a good year.” This sentence from CEO Peter Fenkl sums up the performance of the Künzelsau electric motor and fan manufacturer ZiehlElectric motor

Abegg in the year just past. Turnover rose from EUR 583 million to EUR 633 million. The boom regions were Asia, Europe and the USA. The year 2020 had

n this current year the corona crisis has forced many people to work from home. This requires a sound network infrastructure with large data centres – ZiehlAbegg fans have been used for many years for cooling, both in networks and data centres. “This is an important market for us and one that’s growing rapidly worldwide,” emphasises company CEO Fenkl. Mail order companies 14

Machine - Automation & Electricity / Taiwan Industry 2020

and streaming providers also need large computing capacities, which in turn require the corresponding cooling of the hardware. Special fans for hospitals In the wake of the corona crisis in China, it has now become common knowledge that modern fans are used in both operating theatres and quarantine stations in large clinics: Ziehl-Abegg supplied special fans to hospitals

that were built in the cities of Wuhan, Shandong and Shenzhen within just a few days. The German company has also manufactured the core equipment for negative or positive pressure in clinics in Italy and other countries. “Customers want a very prompt service” says Fenkl, explaining why Ziehl-Abegg is setting up a further production facility for energy-saving EC electric motors in the USA.

Ziehl - Abegg

The new manufacturing plant in North Carolina will enhance the speedy implementation of specific customer requirements. In an increasing number of countries, we are seeing a trend towards energy-saving elevator drives and fans. “Sometimes, high energy costs are the reason for the use of Ziehl-Abegg products, sometimes it’s statutory environmental requirements and in Germany for example, it’s for both reasons” explains company CEO Fenkl. This is due to the fact that more and more building operators are focusing on both the purchase price as well as the ongoing energy costs. Even with existing buildings, the investment in replacement fans usually pays off within two years, without the need for any changes to the rest of the ventilation system.

Positive performance by the elevator division The elevator division at ZiehlAbegg also delivered a positive performance in 2019: in a fiercely competitive environment, elevator drives from Kupferzell have become established in the market thanks to their high quality and the very good service. One major plus point is the proprietary control technology across all divisions: frequency inverters from Ziehl-Abegg are increasingly used to control and regulate various electrical items of equipment. The Automotive division secured a good position for itself in 2019 with its ZAwheel electric in-wheel hub drive for buses: conversion solutions that turn a diesel bus into an electric bus within a week are attracting a great

deal of interest from municipal authorities and bus companies. Ziehl-Abegg is also becoming an established force in the new vehicle business. Passengers in London, Brussels or Paris can now experience the benefits of the in-wheel hub motor as a drive unit for new double-decker sightseeing buses. Increase in the number of employees worldwide The growth in sales was also accompanied by an increase in the number of employees: in Germany, Ziehl-Abegg employs 2,400 people (previous year: 2,250), worldwide the figure is 4,300 (previous year 4,100).

GERMAN MACHINE TOOL INDUSTRY UNDER GREAT PRESSURE

Orders received by the German machine tool industry in the first quarter of 2020 were 25 per cent down on the same period last year. Orders from within Germany fell by 22 per cent. 27 per cent fewer orders were received from abroad.

G

lobal demand for machine tools fell sharply last year due to various chal-lenging factors, but it fell still further at the beginning of the current year,” said Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main, commenting on the results. Only a proportion of the corona effect is currently visible in the books, he pointed out. It will take a few months before the full effect becomes apparent, explained Schäfer. In the metal cutting sector, which serves a broad customer base, the decline in orders is more than double that of the more projectdriven metal forming sec-tor.

16

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Domestic business here in Germany is currently offering a small ray of hope. It rose by a surprising 4 per cent in March. This was mainly due to pro-ject business in the press-making segment. The only region in which orders were up in the first quarter was America, espe-cially Mexico. This was due to automotive projects. Six of the top 15 markets posted increased order levels. These were the USA, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Canada and the Netherlands. “Russia was once the third largest market for our industry. Economic sanctions, however, have resulted in a sharp decline in business. It is all the more gratifying to see a revival from Russia in the current crisis,” reported Schäfer.

Sales revenue also fell – by 18 per cent – in the first quarter. “This is exactly in line with the 2020 forecast we issued in February of this year,” Schäfer contin-ued. “However, it is already apparent that the order figures do not reflect the full extent of the decline, which will eventually be even more severe. Capacity utilisation in the industry also fell significantly by 18 points to 64 per cent between January and April. We currently expect the situation to improve in the second half of the year, provided there is further scaling back of the lock-down arrangements and that production returns to normal. This will determine where the industry will be at the end of the year,” he concluded.

E-LESSON: TXPERT™ DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMER FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

M

any countries are very well placed to benefit from Electric Vehicles (EV). However, pressure would be highest at the lowest network level i.e at the LV distribution level as energy diversity in consumer groups at that level is the least and geographically, people with similar socio- economic grouping are present. This means there will be fastgrowing clusters of the LV network where consumers are able to invest in EV’s. Here, a paradigm shift of the load profile on distribution networks is expected to take place upon full EV penetration. However, limiting EV penetration is not an option for the utility or the government as the push for green energy gains momentum. The development of supporting technologies such as the distribution transformer for EV charging is also very urgent. Any distribution transformer failure due to EV charging would be a severe blow to EV adoption.

ABB has developed the world’s first digital distribution transformer to meet the evolving needs of today’s grid with focus on EV charging. The TXpert digital distribution transformer measures, stores, and trends operating data and calculates transformer consumed life. It uses mature and reliable sensing technology with industrial computing components integrated directly into the transformer during manufacturing.

TXpert increases LV network visibility, increases transformer optimized utilisation, provides accurate estimate of transformer retirement age. With added intelligence in distribution transformers, utilities can reduce operation costs, increase uptime, optimize maintenance, and avoid unplanned outages. T

he Kassow Robots product family now includes four 7-axes cobots: the KR 810 (reach 850 mm/ payload 10kg) and KR 1205 (1200 mm/ 5kg), both introduced in 2019, and the two models currently launching: KR 1805 (1800 mm/ 5 kg) and KR 1410 (1400 mm/10 kg). “Strong, fast, simple – this has been our mission since we first introduced our company two years ago. All four models offer a unique combination of power and speed and are easy to operate. When it comes to reach, the KR1805 is king with its 1.80-metre arm. We are proud to be able to offer industrial customers this added value,” says Dieter Pletscher, Head of Sales at Kassow Robots. “After first presenting our company in 2018 and introducing the first two models in 2019, we can now offer a strong product family of four cobots. For small and medium-sized enterprises, they are a strong, cost-efficient cobot package with almost infinite potential applications,” says Kristian Kassow, founder and CEO of Kassow Robots. Pletscher adds, “For SMEs, introducing or expanding the use of lightweight robotics solutions now really pays off. What is more, the cobots are programmed on an intuitive, user-friendly device, just like the tablets

Danish firm Kassow Robots has added two more models to its product portfolio. With its 1.80-metre robot arm – giving it an unrivalled reach in the cobot market – the KR 1805 opens up completely new applications for customers in industry. Thanks in part to its 7th axis, which allows it to reach around corners, a single cobot can now look after all the stacking and labelling tasks for Euro-pallets, for example. The KR 1410 impresses with a reach of 1.40 metres and a payload of 10 kilograms – a strong combination in the lightweight robotics market. This opens up a wide range of applications for human-robot collaboration (HRC), including in sectors such as the metal industry where high payloads are essential. we all use at home.” The cobots all have three ports, including a data/Ethernet connection to enable easy working. Data/Ethernet port enables wireless connection between the end-of-arm tool and the robot As the company announced in autumn 2019, Kassow fits all four cobot models with three ports as standard, with various I/Os and power supply signals. Two of the ports are for digital or analogue input/output. The third port enables a direct data/Ethernet connection with the controller. This way, customers can, for example, connect camera solutions or Modbus TCP directly to the robot via the intelligent end-of-arm tool interface. This means that the cable does not have to run along the robot arm externally. All cobots from the Danish manufacturer have an end-of-arm tool with a free drive button, making it easy to program waypoints. Statement of WELTEC Director Jens Albartus

T

he developments of the past 20 years confirm the success of the EEG: Since the law went into force, the share of renewable energies in the gross power consumption in Germany has continually increased, from 6.2 percent in 2000 to 42.1 percent in 2019. Accordingly, 244 billion kWh are generated from solar energy, wind, water and biomass. Bioenergy accounts for 11 percent of this figure. In the field of heat generation, renewable energies account for a share of 39 percent, some 34 percent of which are based on bioenergy.„ In Germany, regenerative energies are the power source Number One, and the whole world has come to view the EEG as an effective instrument for the systematic, publicly approved expansion“, underlines Jens Albartus, Director of the German biogas plan manufacturer WELTEC BIOPOWER.

He goes on: „Moreover, the law and its adaptations to new market conditions have constantly brought about new technologies that have become an indispensable element of many profitable energy plants.“ Innovation, in particular, is the driver of the global expansion of renewable energies, in which German companies play a key role. Since it was founded back in 2001, WELTEC advanced from a pioneer in the biogas industry to a key actor in the energy reform. With its sustainable technologies and basic values, the biogas specialist is successful around the globe and makes an important contribution to environmental protection. For instance, the company‘s success is evident from its exports, which are above the industry average: Over the years, the company has planned and set up more than 300 plants in 25 countries on five continents.

Moreover, WELTEC has invested more than €100 million in its own biogas plants throughout Germany.„ To perpetuate the success story and secure jobs in this industry, we must now increasingly turn our attention to the existing anaerobic digestion plants in Germany and urgently find smart follow-up solutions, especially for those whose 20-year EEG subsidisation will end in the coming years“, says Jens Albartus. The effort is surely worth it, as biogas does not depend on wind and sunshine and therefore constitutes a key pillar in the renewable energy mix. „Moreover, biomethane – i.e. refined biogas – serves as an important, carbon-neutral and sustainable fuel in the traffic reform“, explains Jens Albartus and adds: „To engage in research that culminates in innovations that also benefit the development of international projects, we need a strong German market.“

The over 74 hp version provides maximum power of 121 hp and up to 361 lb-ft in torque, with a loose ATS granting higher installation flexibility for different applications. To comply with Tier 4 Final standards, the IPU version has DOC and PMcat as part of its after-treatment system, while the over 74 hp engine uses HIeSCR, without the need for a DPF. Focused on compact equipment, the F34 Tier 4 Final delivers high torque output to ensure quick engine response in variable load conditions. Attributes such as the 600- hour oil change interval and singleside service access reduce operating costs and simplify maintenance operations over the entire engine lifecycle.

To meet the needs of demanding heavy-duty operations, FPT Industrial is taking the Cursor 9 PowerPack to the Las Vegas Convention Center. The six-cylinder engine delivers maximum power of 442 hp at 1,800 rpm and maximum torque of 1,328 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. The Cursor 9 is fitted with FPT Industrial’s exclusive aftertreatment system, HI-e- SCR2, a global solution which enables compliance with the most recent emission standards, such as Tier 4 Final in the USA and Stage V in Europe, maintaining the same packaging for all regions. This technology allows the engine to achieve uprated standards avoiding Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and ensures leadership in fuel economy, power and torque density. It is maintenancefree, granting low operating costs and maximum uptime, together with oil service intervals of 600 hours. The PowerPack configuration adds a smart and simple installation solution that encompasses all key aftertreatment components into a single package. Customers can choose between an enginemounted PowerPack, which is ready to use, and a loose pack for their own design layout.

ftp N67 Natural Gas & Project TETRA

In both cases, all electrical signals and connections are managed by a single cable for fast and reliable linking to the engine and machine’s electronic management system. Cursor X FPT Industrial’s symbol of tomorrow’s mobility, the Cursor X 4.0 Power Source Concept, can also be seen on the Brand’s stand. Designed for Planet Earth, Cursor X is represented by four main features.

Cursor X is the most unique and pioneering solution in powertrain, regardless of the mission. The concept also guides the roadmap of FPT Industrial’s next products, which can make a difference in efficiency and sustainability, such as the newly announced F28 Hybrid.

FPT Industrial is also exhibiting the N67 NG, a natural gas engine specifically developed for off-road applications. Besides ensuring diesellike performance, the N67 Natural Gas has 10% lower CO2 emissions than diesel engines in real field conditions, which can reach virtually zero or even become negative when running on biomethane. It is the power behind CASE Construction Equipment’s methane-powered wheel loader concept Project TETRA. Both the engine and the vehicle can be seen on CASE’s stand at Conexpo (North Hall, N11825).

Multi-power: It could be powered by Natural Gas, electric batteries or hydrogen, adjusting to the customers’ business and sustainability needs. Modular: With the same size as an internal combustion engine and a modular architecture, it would allow for easy assembly, vehicle integration, and quick maintenance. Multi-application: Adapted to any kind of industrial vehicle or machine, with the flexibility to operate in different missions, such as delivery vans, buses, small dozers, crawler excavators, specialty tractors and combines. Mindful: Inspired by human intelligence, the engine would be capable of self-learning, predicting and programming its own maintenance. Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Concept design of using straightening modules SM series

T

he handling, productivity and value retention of components for straightening process materials are of essential importance. The saving of resources and aspects of the sustainability and flexibility of products influence the economic efficiency during the life phase and will decide in the future on the use of the products. With this in background, the technical design of straighteners and straightening systems, their manufacture in well-adjusted quantities and the exploitation of the technical possibilities of the straightening process are important influencing factors which offer scope for creative reflection and further improvement of the understanding of the process. As a manufacturer of components, WITELS-ALBERT GmbH is committed to this environment and presents a revolutionary new concept for the design, manufacture and use of straighteners and straightening systems with the introduction of the SM series of straightening modules. Inspired by the very popular toy bricks from our northern neighbour Denmark, which have been part of a cleverly designed modular 28

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

system for generations, WITELSALBERT GmbH transfers the basic idea of discretization to the design, manufacture and use of straighteners and straightening systems. The bricks of the straighteners and straightening systems of the future are the new straightening modules of the SM series, which are optimized in every detail. The optimization is accompanied by the project planning, the design and concerns in particular the production of the module bodies by modern CNC machines without personnel employment as well as the assembly of the straightening modules, straighteners and straightening systems in short time. The calculation results of the project planning determine binding specifications for the designs that focus on simplicity and minimization of the number of individual parts. That is why SM series straightening modules represent the essence of the product straightener. They are reduced to the absolute minimum, just like the worldfamous toy bricks from Denmark. The majority of famous designers follow the design concept of simplicity. The results of our

efforts over the months are simple as well, nevertheless offering an impressive variety and great possibilities. • Just one type of module per size is used for a straightener or a straightening system. • Manless and fast mass production of straightening modules ensure a good availability and price for customers. • Simple and fast assembly of straightening modules and straightening modules to straighteners and straightening systems. • Enlarged straightening ranges (min. and max. process material diameter) with smallest possible roller spacing. • Optimization/extension of straightening ranges (min. and max. process material diameter) by means of easily adjustable roller spacing or ex works adjustable roller spacing, e.g. for processing specific profiles or tubes. • High flexibility with regard to the number of rollers per plane. • Sale of straightening modules with or without basic and cover bars. • Client-side design of specific base and cover bars for specific applications. • Scalable design for straighteners and straightening systems in terms of roller spacing and number of rollers. • Compatible accessories for straightening modules for ensuring straightening processes in up to 4 straightening planes per straightening system including inlet and outlet guide blocks. Using straightening modules SM series powers the generation of value-add. It gives freedom for customer innovations, as other configurations can be created by using the possibilities the straightening modules offer and by adding accessories and peripheral equipment. At lower cost our customers have the freedom to influence the production design and to be more agile. Less is more.

FPT Industrial F28 Natural Gas

What the jury appreciated most was the modular approach this engine takes. Developed as both a Diesel and Natural Gas powertrain, it is also ready to be used in hybrid electric mode. The 100% Natural Gas (NG) version has the same displacement and interface as the Diesel version, with common base components, and a 3-way catalyst in the after-treatment system, confirming the “Diesel like performance brand motto”. The F28 NG will further reduce pollutant emissions to be even more sustainable. When running on biomethane, it could reduce CO2 emissions to almost zero. The production process of biomethane also contributes to a circular economy, not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but restoring organic matter to the soil and helping local farmers to reduce production costs. As an engine manufacturer, FPT Industrial is the only three-time recipient of the “Diesel of the Year®”. It has previously won for its 3.2liter F32 engine in 2008, and Cursor 16 engine in 2014.

FPT INDUSTRIAL RECORDS POSITIVE RESULTS IN CHINA AT SFH

T

he COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect societies and operations around the globe. FPT Industrial, the global powertrain brand of CNH Industrial, has endeavored to mitigate these effects throughout its manufacturing and commercial network by abiding by the health and safety regulations set forth in the different international markets in which it operates. Currently the demand for industrial powertrains remains strong as the providing of essential equipment is something the world depends on to keep moving. In this challenging moment, positive signs of recovery have begun in China, the first nation to weather through the pandemic. With a gradual return to work and a ramping up of industrial activities, encouraging business results in the country are providing confidence to global players. Such encouragement was recently recorded during the month of April at SFH, FPTIndustrial’s jointventure in Chongqing, China.

Following several weeks of shutdown due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in late January, the plant resumed production in early February with extensive measures in place to ensure the health and safety of all employees. Following a carefully designed plan, it restarted at reduced capacity, gradually returning to full operation. Thanks to increased demand in China’s heavy truck market, SFH recorded a new, alltime high monthly production record for Cursor engines in April. It marked a 6% increase compared to the previous record achieved in 2018 when the heavy truck industry in China was at an unprecedented volume peak. As a leading engine supplier for commercial vehicle manufacturers, SFH counts four cylinder and head production lines and two assembly production lines. Among them, the cylinder and head production lines are equipped with 40 large-scale processors.

The plant is operating 24 hours with extra shifts so as to guarantee supply for its customers, including SIH, parent Company CNH Industrial’s joint venture for heavy trucks in Chongqing, to meet the surging demand of the market which had been impacted due to the lockdown in force. Founded in 2007 by FPT Industrial in partnership with SAIC Motor and Chongqing Machine Equipment, SFH is one of the largest engine manufacturers in China and a pioneer in advanced low-emissions industrial engines. Leybold: Hygienic Enclosures for vacuum pumps ensure highest hygiene standards For consumers and the government, a maximum of safety and quality in the production of food is essential. In order to ensure the highest standards of hygiene, food producers and processors are obliged to clean their machinery regularly via washdowns. To guarantee that vacuum pumps are effectively protected from the used aggressive cleaning media, Leybold has developed a series of Hygienic Enclosures. The vacuum specialist offers users these stainless steel housings in seven different sizes, tailor made for each vacuum pump.

protection concept with the Hygienic Enclosures. Encased by these stainless steel enclosures, the vacuum pumps can be positioned near machines and systems without any problems. „On the basis of the protected Leybold vacuum pumps we can create better and more robust solutions for the demanding food applications“, emphasizes the responsible product manager Niels Gorrebeeck.

„Of course, this applies all the more to applications such as stuffers, tumblers and of course packaging machines, where the machines and systems are cleaned and disinfected particularly frequently and intensively,“ the product manager explains. Tailor made & easy to install Gorrebeeck explains that these stainless steel enclosures are tailor made for each vacuum pump. As a result each enclosed pump can run constantly on every working pressure. The only limitation is the maximal ambient temperature for the enclosure.

Nevertheless, the normal working temperature in F&P environments are around 10 °C, we qualified most enclosures up to 25 °C. Further all the enclosures are offered as a Do It Yourself kit and can be as well installed as commissioned by the user themselves without great effort. „These properties make of the Hygienic Enclosures a cost-effective, sustainable solution. In the end, Hygienic Enclosures makes investments in expensive piping obsolete and at the same moment they offer a better pumping speed performance“, argues Niels Gorrebeeck.

Leybold Sustainable solution Incidentally, this also applies not least with regard to future packaging concepts. Gorrebeeck believes that the industry is also well equipped for this with the new enclosures: „Regardless of which solutions will prevail, food applications can be operated from today more hygienically, ergonomically as well as flexibly. Leybold can successfully accompany these processes into the future with our holistic solution approaches.“

METAV : “LET’S TALK ABOUT INNOVATION” Launching on 15 June 2020, the METAV Web Sessions are the digital platform for metalworking aimed at providing information on production solutions in the postcorona era

40

T

he METAV organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main, is inviting all those interested to take part in its METAV Web Sessions – entitled “Let’s talk about innovation” – from 15 to 19 June 2020. “METAV 2020 has had to be postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic, and so now we want to offer visitors and exhibitors an alternative in the form of the METAV Web Sessions,” says VDW Executive Director Dr. Wilfried Schäfer. In good time before the rescheduled METAV in March next year, the METAV Web Sessions will provide a platform which allows users from the metalworking industry to keep abreast of the latest innovations in pro-duction technology. “The biggest challenge for the companies now will be knowing how to ramp up production again after the lock-down, how to stabilise their sales and return their delivery system to full working order in a short space of time,” says Schäfer, describing the situation. This is why so many METAV exhibitors accepted the VDW’s invitation so quickly, he explains: the METAV Web Sessions provide an opportunity for companies to reconnect with their customers and to show how their products can help in the restructuring of production.

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Jasmin Herter, spokesperson from Gühring KG in Albstadt, Germany, says: “The VDW’s METAV Web Sessions are turning challenges into opportunities. They are highlighting new solutions, which we at Gühring are keen to explore. We’re looking forward to shaping such a virtual trade fair and to discovering what possibilities it has to offer.” Over five days, nearly 90 companies will be giving specialist talks from 9:00 to 17:00 in the following topic areas: Digitalisation, Precision Tools, Machine Tools and Systems, Software, Measurement Systems and Quali-ty Assurance, Additive Manufacturing, Components and Systems, Med-ical Technology and Services, in German and partly in English. “The METAV Web Sessions are now fully booked,” says a delighted Stephanie Simon, Trade Fairs Project Officer and organiser of the event. Just as at the METAV itself, visitors will be able to compare and contrast what the suppliers are offering and, of course, ask questions and discuss with the production experts, she continues. “We’re really looking forward to all the exciting and inspiring presentations. The exhibitors will be able to work with many different formats – from PowerPoint presentations to photos, videos, simulations and much more, besides,” says Simon. She is convinced that the corona

crisis also offers an opportunity to explore new web formats that could complement actual trade fairs in the fu-ture. Udo Hipp, Head of Marketing at Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG in Gosheim, Germany, takes a similar view: “We see the METAV Web Ses-sions as a good way of making and staying in contact with interested parties and customers. We’re looking forward to seeing what response and feedback we get. The Web Sessions will certainly represent a good addition to the marketing mix in the future.” Indeed, digital events are currently enjoying a boom. “Together with our partner, IndustryArena, and the highly motivated team, we’ve very quickly succeeded in developing an effective platform for the week-long METAV Web Sessions and in staging digital versions of a large number of presentations,” says Schäfer. He added that the METAV Web Sessions have already become the top digital event in the metalwork-ing industry in terms of exhibitor numbers and the breadth of topics. The website www.metavwebsessions.com has now gone online. All those interested can view the complete programme and register there.

METAV exhibitors also im-pressive in Web format T

he launch of the METAV Web Sessions has been an all-round success. There was plenty of interesting content on a wide range of productionrelated topics and trends according to the motto “Let’s talk about innovation”. The first major virtual metalworking event of its kind was also a technical success, with few if any major hitches. Last week, over 80 METAV 2020 reloaded exhibitors gave 30-minute presenta-tions, some in English, to their customers. The presentations covered all the major product topics from machine hardware and software through to com-ponents and services. At the end of the week it became clear that this was well received. Each of the almost 1,600 visitors from over 60 countries attended an average of just over three sessions. A total of around 5,000 sessions were booked. “The feed-back from all those who took part was overwhelmingly positive. It shows that our exhibitors are more than capable of putting on an impressive show for their customers – even on the Web,” reports an enthusiastic Stephanie Simon, Trade Fairs Project Manager at the VDW and organiser of the METAV Web Sessions. Alma Zicher, who is responsible for marketing at the software developer PSI in Berlin, Germany, points out: “The METAV Web Sessions were planned and run in a relatively short space of time. They represented a great opportunity for us to get in touch with our customers. Our presenters were given incredible support in preparing for this digital form of presentation. The length of

the presentations keeps the whole thing exciting and compact.” And Philipp Dahlhaus, Head of Product Management at Paul Horn GmbH in Tübingen, Germany, adds: “In these extraordinary times, the METAV Webs Session are a great way to raise the awareness of our customers and other interested parties in the latest developments. We were also impressed by how smoothly everything ran.”

Stephanie Simon International audience for the METAV Web Sessions The Sessions were preceded by an intensive PR campaign to promote the event worldwide. Online channels were mainly used for this due to the short preparation time. The participating companies also provided strong support by actively informing their customers about the event and inviting them to attend. “The whole thing was very worthwhile,” says Stephanie Simon, summing up. Customers from countries near and far registered to attend. After Germany, the front-runners were visitor groups from India, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and the Netherlands.

Some companies “sent” along classsize groups. Representatives of bigname companies such as ABB, BFW (India), BMW, Daimler, Festo, HP, Kami (South Korea), Liebherr and Linde Worldwide were also present. The format of the METAV Web Sessions offered an excitingly structured platform to a large number of providers simultaneously, just like the actual METAV. There are plans for further such events in the run-up to METAV 2020 reloaded next March. “Despite the crisis, the Web Sessions have enabled us to address not only our own customers but also a wider audience, too. The METAV Web Sessions provide a joint forum for various exhibitors, but they also bundle a range of digital developments under a single brand,” agrees Char-lotte Breitwieser, Marketing Manager at Datron AG in Darmstadt, Germany. Christian Weiler, Head of Development, Industrie-Partner GmbH Radebeul-Coswig, Germany, concludes: “The digital format takes a bit of getting used to at first, but we’re so grateful for this opportunity and are interested in par-ticipating again.” Further Web Sessions planned The wait will not be too long. “The VDW will be exploring topical METAV de-velopments in one-day sessions at regular intervals until METAV 2020 re-loaded,” announces VDW Executive Director Dr Wilfried Schäfer. The pro-gramme will be published and the invitations sent out soon. “With our partner IndustryArena, the first METAV Web Sessions went off without a hitch”, says Stephanie Simon, organiser of the METAV Web Sessions Stepha-nie. MEDICAL ENGINEERING REQUIRES LONG-TERM APPROACH It requires high innovativity and investment levels, but enjoys rising demand that is not dependent on economic cycles, and remains steady and reliable even in times of corona. But where there is light, there is inevitably also shade. Scarcely any other industry is so heavily regulated. The bar has been raised once again in the form of the new European Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Machine tools used for the production of implants and surgical instruments or for micro-milled prosthesis geometries, for example, must offer maximum precision and reliability.

industry

Udo Baur, Sales Manager for Germany and Europe at Exeron GmbH, Oberndorf am Neckar.

First there was Brexit, trade

wars and structural change in key industries, now it’s the corona pandemic. Up to now the machine tool manufacturers have only been marginally affected by the economic setbacks, but they are now facing increasing threats. Medical engineering readily springs to mind when it comes to markets that still hold growth potential. But is there any point in even considering moving in this direction in the short term ? 44 Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Niklas Kuczaty, Managing Director of the VDMA’s Medical Technology Working Group, is somewhat sceptical: “Medical engi-neering is a very complex industry. Those looking to gain a foothold need to show commitment and determination – and above all staying power – before any investment will pay off.” At present, medical engineering represents something of a unicorn in the German industrial landscape.

Quality assurance plays a decisive role here. When it comes to health, there is no room for compromise. “Anyone looking to enter the medical engineering sector needs to know what they’re getting into,” emphasises Christian Rotsch, Head of the Medical En-gineering Department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Tech-nology (IWU), Dresden/ Chemnitz. He regards ISO 9001 certification as a basic requirement. Fraunhofer IWU itself is ISO 9001-certified and it also holds ISO 13485 quality management certification for medical devices.

Combined-process automation cell for medical technology: Exeron’s manufacturing combination including milling, die-sinking EDM, cleaning and measurement, incorporating Erowa zero point clamping system and Certa Systems process control system.

Focus on manufacturing processes and materials The Fraunhofer IWU Institute is involved in numerous medical engineering projects. Its main emphasis is on manufacturing processes and materials, but also on biomechan-ics and on translating project results into clinical treatments. Interdisciplinary coopera-tion is crucial. One of its key areas is the development of technology for cutting, ablat-ing and forming processes in precision and micro manufacturing. In addition, it is carrying out research into bone-like structures which can be produced from cellular structures, for example from metal foam or with the aid of generative manufacturing processes. There are attempts to enhance material properties through solid forming. Additive manufacturing methods are increasingly being deployed to create customised, patient-specific implants. Nevertheless, Rotsch sees no threat here to the wide range of conventional methods: “Machining and the corresponding machine tools will still be needed in the future,” he points out.

The projects on which the Chemnitz scientists are working involve both medium-sized and largescale machine tool manufacturers. Christian Rotsch sees very good pro-spects for SMEs to enjoy success with special solutions and machines, for example in the field of microprocessing and finishing. Complete process chains are also in de-mand, especially involving robotic support, which Rotsch sees as a “lucrative field with great potential in terms of demand”.

complex and angled that they can no longer be milled and have to be sink eroded instead. In addition, manual retooling processes always pose the risk of in-accuracies creeping in. The desired accuracy was achieved through Exeron’s manufac-turing combination of milling, die-sinking EDM, cleaning and measuring; Erowa’s zero-point clamping system which increases precision and speed; and Certa Systems’ pro-cess control system which provides automation within the manufacturing network. According to Udo Baur, Sales Manager for Germany and Europe at Exeron, it is crucial to adapt to the special needs of this sensitive industry and also to be prepared to offer unusual solutions or other special services. This includes providing support for product releases. The automation cell was initially commissioned at Exeron but not handed over to Aesculap until after the product release. “We know our customers and their stringent demands,” says Baur, “and we have the know-how and the machines to meet these.”

Maximum quality through reliable processes One such example is Exeron, based in Oberndorf am Neckar – a system supplier of die-sinking EDM and high-speed milling machines. It joined forces with Erowa (Büren, Switzerland) and Certa Systems (Nuremberg, Germany), to develop a combined-pro-cess automation cell for Aesculap (Tuttlingen, Germany), a subsidiary of the B. Braun Group and manufacturer of surgical, orthopaedic and interventional vascular medical products. Aesculap’s challenge is that the required component geometries are some-times so small,

((04_futureAM_Nachbearbeitungszelle.jpg)) Additive manufacturing processes offer great potential for medical technology, especially in cases where the postprocessing stage can be automated. The picture shows an autonomous, robot-supported post-processing cell from the Fraunhofer companies’ Future AM project for the removal of support structures and the creation of target geometries.

Special requirements require tailormade solutions Christian Thiele, Press Spokesman at Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrik Paul Horn, also re-ports on the highly specialised requirements for materials, machining systems and tool solutions. “Experience from other industries is only transferable to a certain extent,” he says. Horn is active in specific fields, offering specialised and unique tool solutions in the whirling of bone screws, for example. The precision tool manufacturer was able to significantly increase tool life by internally cooling the whirling tool while simultaneously preventing the risk of chip accumulation. Whirling is used in medical engineering to pro-duce high-precision and dimensionally stable bone screws made of titanium and stain-less steel. Horn also offers special solutions for surgical instrument machining in the form of specially ground milling tools or special milling cutters with a high milling depth and very narrow cutting width for surgical forceps. The company is also conducting research into cutter coating solutions 46

for medical engineering materials and into cutting conditions for medical products. Christian Thiele also emphasises the great importance of quality management, which is essential for the manufacture of sophisticated medical products. Costs for medical devices continuing to rise IWU expert Christian Rotsch fears that the cost of new medical engineering products will increase dramatically in the future. The Medical Device Regulation requirements are a source of increasing economic pressure for the manufacturers of medical de-vices, which they are passing on to machine manufacturers and suppliers. Neverthe-less, Rotsch is convinced that it will remain worthwhile for machine tool manufacturers and suppliers to enter the medical engineering market. He believes that, if the postpro-cessing stage can be automated, additive processes will give rise to new ideas through the integration of new functions and the trend away from mass-produced towards customised products.

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

However, the most important success factor for companies always remains their response to the regulatory aspects and quality assurance. Paul Horn has been involved in medical engineering for many years, and the sector’s share of total sales is likely to increase in the future. Automotive and medical engineering have traditionally been the strongest pillars of the company, but medical engineer-ing is currently proving to be a stable market for the metalworking company. The corona crisis has generated a number of short-term and urgent enquiries, such as the recent example of a customer who approached Paul Horn with machining problems in the production of components for a heart-lung machine. Paul Horn is maintaining oper-ations in all areas, which will allow it to react quickly and effectively. However, it’s important to realise, says Thiele, that there is no decline in the demand for tools used in the manufacture of implants and hip joints, for example; they are simply out of the lime-light at the moment.

VDMA expert Niklas Kuczaty is also convinced of the strong growth prospects for medi-cal engineering, even if they are not expected to reach the volume of the automotive industry.

Furthermore, the sector is much less dependent on economic cycles. In any case, companies that decide to enter the market have to realise that they will be invest-ing for at least two to three years before seeing any success.

Yet, as Kuczaty points out, taking such a long-term approach will eventually pay off. Maybe not immediately, but perhaps in time for the next crisis. Author: Cornelia Gewiehs, freelance journalist, Rotenburg (Wümme)

regular AMB to be held from 13 to 17 September 2022 / AMB Forum planned for September 2020 and 2021 / Exhibitors back the decision

50

Although

the exhibitor survey conducted by Messe Stuttgart clearly showed thatthere is no adequate basis for an AMB exhibition this year, there is definitelyinterest in a format in Stuttgart this autumn. Messe Stuttgart is therefore planningan AMB Forum for the first time in the present AMB week (14 to 18 September 2020). Featuring specialist industry-specific talks in the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart, an accompanying table top exhibition and different matchmaking services, the Forum will bring together players in the industry who are interested in and need a platform in autumn. The next regular AMB will then be held in its regular cycle in Stuttgart from 13 to 17 September 2022. The new exhibition date creates planning security for every participant during the difficult economic situation at present. Messe Stuttgart actively included the exhibitors and the promotional supporters, i.e.

the VDMA Precision Tools Association, the VDMA Software and Digitalisation Association, and the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association (VDW), in this important decision (see attached graph relating to the result). Roland Bleinroth, President and CEO of Messe Stuttgart emphasised: “The voteby the exhibitors gave us a clear mandate, thus enabling us to end the speculations surrounding the feasibility of AMB 2020. At the present moment in time with all the regulations relating to hygiene, social distancing or restricted travel possibilities and the current general economic conditions, an AMB such as we know it cannot be staged this year.” According to Bleinroth, the current objective is to develop the new format of an innovative AMB Forum with all participants for September 2020 and 2021, and then plan and implement a successful AMB, International Exhibition for Metal Working, again in 2022.

In the interest of the exhibitors, in the interest of the visitors and in a spirit of responsibility for the exhibition location and the economic region of Stuttgart. “The AMB Project Team is now closely involved in designing and planning the first AMB Forum, and is starting the preparations for AMB 2022,” added Gunnar Mey, Department Director Industry at Messe Stuttgart. Mey emphasised: “Our objective is to produce a successful format together with the interested exhibitors. We are looking forward to the exchange of ideas and information with the industry in this respect and to the personal meetings in September.” Comments by the industry on the next regular AMB in 2022 Markus Heseding, Managing Director of the VDMA Precision Tools & Measuring and Testing Technology Association: “The survey results show a clear opinion among all the exhibitors.

Amb

In our discussions with the members we also received different replies which paint a similar picture. We are already looking forward to a successful AMB 2022 and will fully support the new AMB Innovation Forum.” Prof. Claus Oetter, Managing Director of the VDMA Software and Digitalisation Association: “Since there is still no blueprint for decisions during the corona crisis, Messe Stuttgart once again followed the path of maximum customer orientation by conducting an exhibitor survey. The alternative format of an AMB Forum this autumn represents an opportunity to fly the flag as AMB in spite of the crisis.” Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Managing Director of the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association (VDW): “We very much appreciate the fact that Messe Stuttgart actively included our exhibiting members in the decision regarding AMB 2020.

The exhibitors formulated their ideas with a majority of just under two thirds for the next AMB in 2022. We are very pleased that Messe Stuttgart is following this recommendation.” Michael Blank, Director Marketing & Communication at the Ceratizit Group: “In my opinion, it is unfortunately still impossible at the moment to stage AMB 2020. However, the need for personal contact will come return. Postponing the exhibition to 2022 is therefore the right decision.” Irene Bader, Director Global Marketing at DMG MORI: “Here at DMG MORI, we attach utmost priority to the health and safety of our employees, customers, suppliers and partners. For us as an international company, it is therefore not an option to stage AMB 2020 due to the numerous restrictions.

Since AMB is a very well positioned exhibition, I welcome its postponement to 2022 so that it can be staged again in its regular cycle. This is the best solution in order to protect all participants in the current situation.” Dr. Oliver Gühring, Gühring KG: “It is unfeasible to stage AMB this year. We are now hoping to be able to implement a fairly normal exhibition year in 2021 with a large number of existing events and then organise a successful AMB in 2022 with renewed strength.” Steffen Nagel, NAGEL Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH: “An AMB 2020 in rubber gloves and masks, on half the amount of exhibition space with only a few exhibitors and visitors, is not in the interest of our customers and the success story that is AMB. We are therefore definitely in favour of holding the next AMB in 2022.”

IUNO2PAKT: Real world solutions for safer industrial communication

Seizing the potential of certificates for securing the industry of tomorrow

58

I

UNO, the German national reference project for IT security in Industry 4.0, returns with a second iteration under the name of IUNO2PAKT, new goals, and partners to offer a vast range of solutions meant to counter the cyber challenges Germany and the global community are facing on the cusp of the digital industrial revolution. Fraunhofer IOSB, the largest European research institution in the field of image acquisition, processing, and analysis, Hilscher, a prominent manufacturer and service provider for communication solutions and automation, Weidmueller, a world leader in the industrial environment of power, signal, and data, and Wibu-Systems, a pioneer in secure license management servicing any software powered business, have joined forces to empower enterprises in their digital transformation journey.

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

Recent developments have shown the elasticity, but also the fragility of global supply chains faced with a sudden and unexpected crisis: With smart factories and modern technologies like 3D printing adding much needed responsiveness, the breakdown of physical connections and human communication puts the reliability and security of digital communication in the spotlight. IUNO had already produced important advances in this area upon its conclusion in late 2018. Now IUNO2PAKT, the second incarnation of the initiative, sees its members pooling their expertise for a period of three years and publicizing the concepts, methods, and tools needed to install the backbone of a more resilient industrial landscape with an emphasis on usability in the real world.

Wibu-Systems has adhered to the IUNO2PAKT consortium with a commitment to harnessing the power of certificates for safer industrial communication. Digital certificates provide the most desperately needed currency in these transactions: trust. Assigned by a trustworthy Certification Authority, certificates can act as proof of identity in machine-to-machine communication and smart factories, where applications, machines, and business systems need to be able to identify and communicate with each other, often in heterogeneous environments or across legacy networks. Their widespread use, however, has been held back by the sheer complexity of certificate management. Even if a solid certification process is in place, the risk lies in the passage of the certificate to the target machine or device. Modern Global Discovery

Fraunhofer IOSB, Hilscher, Weidmueller, and Wibu-Systems kick off IUNO2PAKT, the second iteration of Germany’s national reference project for IT security in Industry 4.0 Servers (GDS) step into the breach to ensure that certificates are trusted by their recipient. For IUNO2PAKT, Wibu-Systems is enveloping this entire process with a novel addition to its CodeMeter security and protection universe: CodeMeter Certificate Vault.

GDS and OPC UA stacks like Unified Automation’s or the open62541 ANSI C stack, specifically to operate seamlessly within ecosystems that are already popular in the industrial automation world. Certificate Vault integrates with the SSL part of the stacks to create a multi-vendor platform for certificate storage The new approach sees and handling, thus lowering certificates placed in the safe one of the hurdles for the use space of a CodeMeter license of optimal security technology container, either a CmDongle in the context of OPC UA. as the physically safest container or its more intangible CodeMeter Certificate counterparts, a CmActLicense Vault is also integrated with or a CmCloudContainer, CodeMeter License Central, respectively, the file and the cloud-based license cloud-based counterparts. management system favored CodeMeter Certificate Vault by clients for its ease of use, is designed to work with to guarantee a new level of Microsoft’s open-source convenience in the roll out

process of digital certificates. Ultimately, Wibu-Systems’ contribution to IUNO2PAKT raises the bar for trust and comfort in the world of digital certificates, making for an easier transition to a truly connected industrial world. Marco Blume, Product Manager Embedded at WibuSystems, believes in the game-changing potential of certificates: “What stops many OPC UA users from utilizing their full security functions is the complexity in handling certificates. Wibu-Systems’ primary focus for this project is to automate that process by integrating CodeMeter Certificate Vault in mixedvendor, heterogeneous OPC UA infrastructures.”

TWO NEW TURBOMOLECULAR PUMP SIZES FROM LEYBOLD FOR R&D AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

In June 2020 the vacuum specialist Leybold has expanded its TURBOVAC i/iX series - 90, 250, 350 and 450 - by the sizes 850 i/ iX and 950 i/iX to six models. The two new turbomolecular pump variants are characterized by extended, trouble-free operation, longer system life and lower operating costs. They are used in many applications from research and development and analytics to industrial. In other words, especially where a clean and stable high- and ultrahigh vacuum is required – such as in coating, heat treatment, analysis, thin-film research and helium recovery.

ignificantly higher productivity

Basically, the new members of the TURBOVAC i/iX family provide significantly improved vacuum performance in a wide range of applications. Especially due to the expansion of the family in the direction of higher pumping speeds and compression values, lower service costs and simple, intuitive operation. In some applications, the integration of the new 850 i/iX and 950 i/iX models will even lead to a significant reduction in the number of pumps and thus in the total life cycle costs. Mountable in any orientation These options are also useful for another reason: Each vacuum application has different installation conditions. This requires flexible installation directions, for example when there is little space for vacuum pumps,

as is the case when integrating them into compact, industrial pumping system solutions. Here too, the TURBOVAC i/iX series, with its various models and variants in terms of pumping speeds or compression ratios, is one of the most flexible systems on the market for high-vacuum products and can be mounted in any orientation. Flexible integrated drive electronics

via the TURBO.CONTROL i. The advantage of the controller is that it is equally suitable for integration in high-vacuum applications and compact system solutions. Its application is uncomplicated: It can be operated intuitively via the display and front keys or via a web server interface. The web server allows all pump parameters to be easily monitored and set via PC or mobile device. Cost effective maintenance with very long intervals

Especially in order to promote sales in the industrial and coating market, EthernetIP, EtherCAT and Profinet Anybus options are now added to the existing Profibus, RS232 and RS485 communication modules. They are all available as IP54 versions. The EthernetIP, EtherCAT and Profinet modules have an integrated web server. TURBO.CONTROL i The entire TURBOVAC i/iX series can be controlled and monitored

Last but not least, the maintenance-free and oilfree hybrid bearing concept ensures greater reliability and a longer service life: On the highvacuum side, the rotor of the turbomolecular pump is guided in a wear-free magnetic bearing, while a ceramic ball bearing lubricated for life is integrated on the backing side, which users can replace themselves on site if necessary.

METAV Web Sessions – Ideal further training If so, they can then use the certificate to document their attendance in the sessions – and their newly acquired knowledge of the latest developments. “In such a challenging period for orders, it’s important for employees to use this time for further training. Visitors to the METAV Web Sessions thus gain doubly from taking part,” explained Göbel. The sessions also represent an attractive proposition for other homeoffice employees who are otherwise not able to benefit from further training measures so often. The Web Sessions can be followed using mobile devices such as laptops, tablets or smartphones.

F

rankfurt am Main, 2 June 2020. – “The METAV Web Sessions from 15 to 19 June 2020 will offer a unique range of compelling information and presentations on the latest developments in production technology, but will also provide participants with an added extra,” announced Martin Göbel, Director Trade Fairs at the VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main. Afterwards, all participants will receive a certificate stating which web sessions they took part in. They can clarify in advance whether their company recognises participation as further training. 64

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2019

More than 80 companies are planning to use the METAV Web Sessions in order to target customers they would otherwise have reached at METAV 2020. Each session will last roughly 20 minutes and be followed by ten minutes for questions. Companies will present the machines, solutions and services which they will then be showcasing live at METAV reloaded in March 2021. Topics include digitalisation, precision tools, machine tools and systems, software, measuring systems and quality assurance, additive manufacturing, components and systems, medical engineering and services.

The exhibitors are already looking forward to the event, which represents uncharted territory for many. “The METAV fair itself might have been postponed, but the METAV visitors are still very much interested in seeing what progress we are making in our product development,” said Nicole Rüffer from Isra Vision AG in Darmstadt. “In the current situation, such web sessions are the best way for us to let the general public know about our latest developments,” Rüffer continues. Andreas Lindner, from Bimatec-Soraluce in Limburg, added: “The challenges facing manufacturing companies today are changing faster than ever. In the current situation, how much experience do you need to have in order to ensure sufficiently high precision and efficiency levels? What can you do if an experienced machine operator leaves your company but you’re about to launch a new project? These are the kinds of questions I will be answering. I’m looking forward to meeting all the participants online and I’m keen to see what kinds of questions they have.” Registration details and information on the entire programme can be found at www.metav-websessions.de

ETW Energietechnik

ETW ENERGIETECHNIK SUPPLIES THE BIOMETHANE UPGRADING TECHNOLOGY FOR A 45 KM BIOGAS GRID With a newly built biogas pipeline, the association “Biogaspartner Bitburg” will in future bundle the raw biogas supplies of up to 48 biogas plants from the region. The 45-kilo¬metre-long pipeline will transport the renewable energy source to a central upgrading plant at the Bitburg commercial, service and leisure centre area “Flugplatz Bitburg” from May 2020. There it will be refined to biomethane, a natural gas equivalent rene-wable alternative and fed into the gas grid.

With this pipeline, the shareholders, SWT Stadtwerke Trier, the private waste manage¬ment company Luzia Francois and Landwerke Eifel AöR, are creating the conditions for an important component of the green and decentralised energy transition. The core of the project is the biomethane upgrading plant of ETW Energietechnik from Moers - based on the established, efficient ETW SmartCycle ® PSA technology.

T

he biogas plant network in the region has a total potential to produce around 10,000 cubic meters of raw biogas per hour. Since May 2020, an initial seven plants have been sending 1800 cubic meters per hour of biogas to the upgrading plant - which corresponds to an annual volume of around 64 million kilowatt hours. With this volume, a good third of the annual natural gas demand of the nearby district town of Bitburg (14,000 inhabitants) can be covered. 66

Machine - Automation & Electricity / World News 2020

The processing plant comes from the CHP and biogas upgrading specialists ETW Energietechnik in Moers. It is based on the established ETW SmartCycle ® PSA tech¬nology, which was developed by ETW‘s own design team. „In the module, up to about 1800 cubic meters of raw biogas are upgraded every hour by removing CO2 and other undesirable elements, converted into biomethane and finally fed into the natural gas grid of the Trier public utility company,“ explains Dr. Oliver Jende,

responsible sales manager at ETW Energietechnik GmbH. Biogas upgrading is used to refine biogas with a composition of about 50 percent CH4, the rest CO2. With this plant, the CO2 portion is separated from the main gas stream, thus producing a product gas interchangeable with natural gas that can be fed into the natural gas grid via a downstream feed-in plant.

ETW Energietechnik

The gas components are separated by means of pressure swing adsorption (PSA), a physical process for separating gas components under pressure by adsorption. The separation effect is achieved because one of the components to be separated (CO2) adsorbs more strongly than the other (CH4). This results in an enrichment of the less adsorbing component (CH4) in the gas phase. A particular advantage of the ETW SmartCycle® PSA compared to other biogas up¬grading processes is the dynamic adaptation to fluctuating raw gas compositions. This is done automatically according to the desired purity of the product gas and the volume flow by adjusting the cycle speed. The plant consists of a total of four containers, in which the PSA units, the vacuum pumps, the compressors and the entire instrumentation of the system control are accommodated. „It also contains a comfortable control room from which not only the treatment plant can be operated but also the already connected and future biogas plants can be monitored,“ says Dr. Oliver Jende.

„During the planning stage, we have already provided for the possibility of being able to adjust the future capacity at any time to the expected growth of the agricultural biogas plants“, Dr. Jende looks ahead. The benefits of the ETW process for the users have now also spread around the world. ETW Energietechnik has received another order to deliver the first ETW SmartCycle plant to Canada. The setup will have a processing capacity of 1920 Nm3/h raw biogas and is the first biomethane project for ETW outside Europe. In addition, ETW ist developing projects to produce both biomethane and liquefied CO2 according to EIGA Food grade.. In this combination the plant will enable a 100% CH4 yield, i.e. zero CH4 emissions and even a negative CO2 footprint. Also Land-fill gas upgrading plants are being designed, that are able to extract high amounts of Nitrogen (N2) from land-fill gas with the ETW SmartCycle ® PSA technology.ETW is thus gradu¬ally establishing itself as a supplier of industrial biomethane plants.

Not least for this reason, ETW Energietechnik is currently in the process of doubling its production capacity at its headquarters in Moers. Construction work on the new hall and office building is in full swing and should be completed by August. With these or¬ders and capacity expansions, ETW Energietechnik GmbH can count itself among the companies in the energy sector that are even creating new jobs in these difficult times. Reliability and economy The advantages of the ETW SmartCycle® PSA gas upgrading process at a glance: •

Lowest energy consumption of all biogas upgrading processes

Simple process control and high availability (reference plants with 99% availability)

Fully automatic startup and turndown - Function

Methane content in the product gas adjustable between 96 and 99%

Guardbed to protect the adsorber filling

Adsorbent service life of more than 15 years

No chemical and biological risks as the process is completely dry

- No waste water and no waste.

Praising the collective fundraising efforts of colleagues, Works Council Chairman Danny Kunze said: “This year, the commitment of our employees to the seriously ill children and their families was particularly impressive. Without donations and voluntary work, the work these facilities do would not be possible. That is why it is a matter of the heart for us to help.” Unfortunately, the costs incurred during a stay in a children’s hospice and outpatient hospice care are not fully covered by health and nursing care insurance in Germany.

With around 40,000 children at any time falling ill in a life-shortening way, providing psychosocial support, dignified palliative care and relief via children’s hospices and outpatient support services is critical. “It’s one thing to talk about being socially responsible and showing how much we care. Taking action is another thing altogether. Despite working remotely during the current Covid-19 crisis, we are proud to see colleagues are continuing to share their time and making a difference in their local communities,” adds Frank Stengel.

It is regarded as one of the birthplaces of “Industry 4.0”, so it is no wonder that Saarland companies recognised its potential early on and have been exploiting it across multiple sectors. Bosch Rexroth set up the world’s first “Industry 4.0” assembly, at its Saarland plant, and received the 2014 ‘Industry 4.0 Award’ for this technological step. Two hundred different hydraulic valves from two thousand different individual parts are now produced on one production line, where six different lines were previously required. Line workers are supported by help texts, videos, and light signals. This technological step forward has enabled the company to boost productivity, reduce inventory

stock and save half a million euros a year. Logistics specialists are also repositioning their services and creating intelligent interfaces with their customers.

Marco Eglseder, CEO of Rein Spedition, expects AI to be widely used in logistics

Marco Eglseder, CEO of the Saarland company Rein Spedition, forecasts important development in the logistics sector. “As a service provider to major industry partners, we do not just wait for our customers’ specifications. Instead, we actively develop solutions that combine Industry 4.0 production principles and “Big Data” with our services. In Saarland, this is also easy to implement for mediumsized companies. Good networks and collaborative cooperation with local research institutes are a clear competitive advantage for us.” Rein Spedition is particularly interested in the benefits offered by AI. “We participate and contribute our resources and research interests in relevant local research projects. We are convinced that AI applications will be a basic requirement for future collaborations with our customers.’ One of the most crucial aspects and deciding factors for the success of the data-oriented industry is cybersecurity.

“Industry 4.0 can only be achieved with IT security X.0 that is consistently several steps ahead of new industrial applications’, explains Prof. Dr. Mana Mojadadr, CEO of MBC Cybersecurity. To ensure that the increasing digital networking of machines and infrastructure has any chance of being sustainable, we use machine learning technology. We work with companies from a wide variety of sectors to develop forward-looking software solutions.’ The CEO of MBS emphasises the vital role that cybersecurity plays for technological advances in industry. “A cybersecurity problem in critical infrastructure can quickly become a safety problem. Anticipatory use of cybersecurity software therefore ensures trust in Industry 4.0.” Germany’s Saarland has shown itself to be ideally equipped for the challenges that companies are facing, as the example of MBC makes clear: ‘In Saarland, we have access to highly trained people and an exceptional research landscape, particularly in the IT and cybersecurity sector.’

Saarland Companies receive full support from the state government.

Prof. Dr. Mana Mojadadr, CEO of MBC Cybersecurity, views data security as crucial for Industry 4.0 Success results from commitment and support working hand in hand To ensure that companies enjoy ideal conditions in Saarland, the state’s economic development agency, gwSaar, is developing tailor-made industrial sites. Thomas Schuck, CEO of gwSaar, explains what is being offered: ‘The development of new industrial sites is the responsibility of Saarland’s Economic Promotion Corporation. Thanks to decades of collaboration with investors from every sector, we have a good overview of what companies require. These requirements are the maxim when we develop our industrial sites. The quick, goal-oriented and caring support we provide to relocation projects is well known. The package offered is a comprehensive service, from project-specific site information through to fully developed sites or optimum real estate. A package that can provide companies with decisive timeline and budgetary advantages when implementing their projects.”

Thomas Schuck, CEO of gwSaar, creating optimal conditions for investors

Anke Rehlinger, Minister of Economics, Labor, Energy and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister of Saarland, emphasises: “The Saarland is a state that gained its economic success from coal and steel. What are the coal deposits of the 21st century? Digital infrastructure and networking are without a doubt a key part of future industry. Innovation and digital networking are not at odds with industrial tradition – they are the key to ensuring that our economic success continues in the future. We in the state government are supporting the economy via a major expansion of speedy Internet services and investment in technological advances such as hydrogen. Industry will continue to offer well-paid jobs in the future, if we are able to actively engage with this future!’

Anke Rehlinger, Saarland’s Minister of Economics, Labour, Energy and Transport, is committed to Saarland as an industrial hub Saarland is promoting innovation in local SMEs via the Zentrale Technologieprogramm Saar. However, applied entrepreneurial research and development takes more than just funding: It also requires a goaloriented interconnection between industry and science. In Germany’s Saarland, therefore, companies can rely on an effective research infrastructure. Saarland the Saarland serves as a key partner for regional and national companies when it comes to introducing new technologies to industrial floors. Local companies, in particular in the fields of mechanical engineering, consumer goods and the automotive sector, benefit from the active transfer of technology from the Centre’s applied research. Projects, such as the Saarbrücken SMEs 4.0 Centre of Excellence, conducted by ZeMA and other Saarland partners, particularly give small and medium-sized enterprises an opportunity to work with the Centre’s experts to develop specific solutions for Industry 4.0 advancements. This ensures that SMEs can rapidly incorporate research findings into their everyday production and processes. The use of new technologies in industry and the continuous improvement of production and business processes secures existing jobs and ensures that our region will continue to play a pioneering economic role in the future’, explains Prof. Rainer Müller, Scientific CEO of ZeMA.

for research into artificial intelligence and one of the most important centres of excellence worldwide Applications of tomorrow are being developed in numerous industrial projects The institute’s scientific expertise covers a wide range of areas, from agents and simulated reality to algorithmic business and production, cognitive assistance systems, language technology and multilingualism as well as smart service engineering. “In Saarbrücken, DFKI and its around 400 employees are closely networked with all university and independent research institutes as well as - and this is particularly important to us with medium-sized companies in Saarland”, emphasises Antonio Krüger, Professor of Computer Science and CEO of the German Research Centre for Artificial intelligence (DFKI). “We see many tangible results have been achieved from these yearlong, intensive and constructive dialogues. The successful development of the nonprofit DFKI GmbH shows that trustbased cooperation and a state that keeps red tape to a minimum can sustainably support and accelerate structural change towards a knowledge-based society. The DFKI makes a significant contribution to the continuing development of the Saarland as a production and industry hub.”

Prof. Rainer Müller of ZeMA points the way to Industry 4.0 In the future, production will involve networking all available data streams. Data streams from customers, suppliers and logistics providers will be incorporated into internal processes. As a result, companies that make efficient and secure use of big and mega data will have a clear competitive advantage. In addition, this treasury of data can lead to new business and revenue models. DFKI, headquartered in Saarbrücken, is considered as the largest centre 78

Antonio Krüger, Professor of Computer Science and CEO of DFKI, supports medium-sized companies via cooperation ZeMA and DFKI have pooled their skills to create the industry Power4Production (P4P) platform. P4P focuses on intelligent production technologies that enable the intel-

ligent networking of products and the production environment along the entire value chain. The aim is to tackle specific tasks in industry and ensure that the resulting solutions are quickly transferred to an industrial environment. Communication between workpiece and machine, human-robot communication (HRC) and cyber-physical production systems are focus areas for the platform’s researchers and companies. P4P also supports companies with other challenges, including robust networks, cloud computing and energy efficiency in production. The work focuses on transferring the results of applied research into industry, and on collaboration in research projects to solve specific industry problems. Transforming industry is a collaborative task The example of Germany‘s Saarland shows that industrial change and development in the sense of Industry 4.0 requires the cooperation of all actors. One obvious prerequisite is cooperation along the entire value chain, including research. Optimal siting and expansion conditions ensure entrepreneurial investment in the future. Informed and creative political decisions can improve the framework of conditions for resident companies. Germany has established a stimulus package of 130 billion euros in response to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. These funded projects will assure that the industry and production processes of the future will remain a key focus on both a state and federal level. *****************************
