of bowling is ever improving. Since the last issue of the Pavilion Post a number of 'first timers' have posted their names for selection in the friendly matches and have been selected to play. The willingness of our junior members to 'mix-it' with the 'big boys' is also very encouraging. I would like to thank all members for supporting our club and wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Captain’s Mid-Season Report The year 2013 is now over and we are half-way through the Indoor Season. We have played fourteen friendly matches winning ten and losing two. Sixty-two gentlemen played and in the mixed matches twenty ladies have played. The success of our three League teams last summer has; I'm sure, 'rubbed off' on our membership as the standard

Pavilion v Past Presidents

Pavilion v Arun (Away)

On Saturday 4th January 2014 Pavilion entertained a team of West Sussex Past Presidents which included two home players - Joe Barrass and Bill Simmons. Unfortunately for Bill and Joe the Past Presidents team lost to Pavilion by 132 shots to 94. Pavilion won on four rinks and lost by a total of only six shots on the two losing rinks. Pavilion Captain, Edward Cripps and his team caused most of the damage, being the day’s top rink, scoring thirty-four shots as opposed to the opposition’s six shots.

Hi Fellow Countrymen, It is a very sad duty that I have to report the tragic and untimely demise of our unbeaten record of a mere twenty-four straight league wins; Outdoors and Indoors! Apologies for keeping you waiting have just used another five tissues and supped another bottle of gold watch!! I'll try again - the results on the boards were as follows:Murphy Clarke Brown Frew Dray Strong

38-08 17-18 06-31 16-15 15-33 21-22

Leaman Corne Bonnar Sayers Hannam Butler

Pavilion 113-127 Arun Pavilion 2pts 9pts Arun This fixture was destined to be our sternest test to date indoors. Arun were fourteen shots ahead after fifteen ends. We then picked up a number of ends and were ninety shots each side after eighteen ends. After subsequently being two shots in front we went on to come second by fourteen shots, but sadly only picking up two points. Tremendous effort by William Murphy and his lads, despite dropping three shots on the last two ends Vic Frew and his crew hung in to win by one shot. Rinks of both Clunks Clarke and Nobby Strong were unfortunate each to lose by a single shot. Arun turned out a full first team whereas we were without five of our regulars. Sadly, a late withdrawal of one of our team necessitated changes on the two rinks that suffered a rather heavy defeat. Notwithstanding this hiccup, twenty-four consecutive wins is an exemplary record in anyone's book. Team spirit and commitment still superb. With sincere thanks to all team members and supporters. Seasons Greetings and may we all enjoy a peaceful and healthy New Year that sees us returning to the echelon of the first division of the County League. Overcome with grief of the Parish

Despite the thumping the match was very enjoyable and played in a very happy atmosphere. We all know that the end score does not always reflect the whole story!

Pavilion v Wealden IBC th

On Tuesday 14 January we entertained Wealden Ladies who unfortunately only managed to field 4 rinks. We won the match 72 – 67 winning on two rinks, drawing on one and losing one. Pavilion top rink Sharon Pratt Ann Button Joan Barrass Marina Crayston As we had a lot of ladies wanting to play, a mini tournament was arranged on the spare two rinks consisting of four teams of four all playing each other over seven ends. The winners were the team with the most shots over all. The results were very close but the winning team was:Diane Dwyer Margaret Marriott June Braiden Jean Garwood

went to Wealden in the County Pairs and lost by nine shots after a very good match. Gene Mears Ley Elliott Doreen Merrett Marj Saunders went to Preston in the County Fours and put up a good show but lost 21-12 There seems to be a theme here all away matches perhaps we will be luckier with the draw next year. Good luck to all who have gone through to the next round.

the Rule Book so it was accurate. However, when we coach, we try to encourage the new bowler to stay on the mat until his delivery has come to rest, this is good practice for all bowlers. If you wander of the mat left or right while the bowl is still in motion and not move back on the mat, when the bowl comes to rest it gives a false impression of distance etc, relevant to the jack and centre line therefore making it difficult to adjust your line / length for your next delivery. Importantly, when the bowl comes to rest, you have lost possession of the rink, therefore the skip should NOT pass any information regarding where the bowl has come to rest, until you return to the mat for your next delivery. In the outdoor leagues last summer, we came across an opposing skip who became very agitated indeed when our lead had moved off the mat and the bowl had come to rest, our skip was telling him where his bowl had finished. The opposing skip insisted we had lost possession of the rink and we were not entitled to give any information, which was correct according to the rules. Unfortunately it spoilt the afternoon for most of us on the rink. The coaching team has been carrying out video clinics for the juniors and the difference to their deliveries when we had shown them on the IPad was good to see. They were surprised how their deliveries had changed in the short time they had been bowling. We also did some clinics for the ladies and one of the ladies who took part has recently won an important county match. The feedback we get from these sessions is very rewarding and the results are really encouraging.

Malcolm Gilbey Touring Club WARNER’S BEMBRIDGE I have received the account from Warners, so you will shortly receive a letter from Don requesting the balances due. I have ordered the ferry tickets and I will give these out; if I have received them; at the A.G.M. which will be on th Thursday evening 20 February at 7.00pm. This meeting will also involve details of the Dawlish trip, so if you are not going to Bembridge, but you are going to Dawlish then please be good enough to come to the meeting as I am sure Tim would like your views on this and future tours. With regards to BEMBRIDGE I need to know your teams of four for the bowls, as I only have two at the moment; those being the Elliots with the Hollimans and Gordon, Keith, Ric and myself; so could you please let me know who you want

to play with. Otherwise I will have to let Warners do the arranging. Finally can you let me know your table plans for breakfast and dinner, they can be in fours or sixes. So far I have an organisers table of eight; which is the Hollimans, Elliots, Boyens and Davis; and a table of six being the Baldwins, Humphreys and Fordyce. I would normally put the single guys together on one table, but if the others can let me know it would be appreciated otherwise I will have to decide. Please leave your details in my pigeon hole. Thanks

So how about it Marina, Marleen, Carol and all you girls don’t let the club down. Seriously please put your entries in a soon as possible as the last thing I want to do is to disappoint a member for not entering earlier. Thanks

Warwick Davis PlanetBowls PLANETBOWLS MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND I am pleased to say the entries have started to roll in and all is beginning to fall into place. Thankfully a number of people have been volunteering to meet and greet, to man the car park and to mark the early morning ties. I would however like some more people to come forward especially markers, as I will need a minimum of twelve for Saturday and Sunday. Please let me know if you can help by using my pigeon hole. I have reserved thirty-two slots for members which are now filling up, so if you want to play in this event you need to place your entry as soon as possible. An entrance fee of £20.00 for a minimum of two games against some of the best bowlers in the UK is not a bad deal and you never know you could win the plate competition; which would

Club Bar and Catering The Bar ‘Forget what the Nanny State tells you please help your club by eating and drinking more!’ I assumed responsibility for the bar and catering portfolio at the December Board meeting; I can only surmise that my co-directors thought that I looked like someone who enjoys a pie and a pint and so was qualified for the job! Time will tell, but since then I have been trying hard to learn more about both operations. For the benefit of new members I can explain that the bar is run wholly by Worthing Pavilion BC Ltd; we employ the staff; set the opening hours within the licensing laws; decide on the stock and accept liability for losses; while aiming of course to return a small profit. The bar is really there to provide a service to all members and guests and while a healthy profit would be great, we have seen takings fall as people decide to drink less, or do it at home and therefore more cheaply. At the same time costs have risen so making a healthy profit is hard going.

Catering The kitchen is entirely different being a business in its own right - Temptations Club Catering Ltd (TCC) - run by Dave and Yvonne Younger. They pay us an annual rent and we provide utilities and most of the equipment. In return TCC has exclusive rights to sell food on club premises and provides a very flexible service to cover everything from breakfasts to buffets in the evening for social events. The recession has left just about everyone being more careful with their spare money and people have clearly chosen to eat at the club less often. That is understandable, but it has seen a steady drop in income for TCC., If Dave and Yvonne were ever to leave for pastures new, where would that leave the club?

We cannot afford to employ a chef and staff, so it would have to be another catering firm coming in and trying to make a living from it. But they would expect to see the books for TCC., and would understand the problems involved. It follows that we may struggle to find another professional caterer if the need seriously arose. Consequently, my plea is simple:please use the club catering more often. Friends or relatives coming to visit? Save on washing up and cooking at home and bring them to the club. Been in town shopping? Don't take out a re-mortgage to buy coffee from one of the big chains - please come to the club instead. There will normally be a friendly face to chat to and some bowling to watch. If half our membership just had a toasted sandwich and a mug of tea once a month it would make a huge difference. I am having discussions with Dave and Yvonne regarding possible menu changes, but if anyone has any suggestions, requests or indeed complaints, then please bring them straight to me. The same applies for the bar. I can be reached on 01903 700662 or terryurben@hotmail.com and I will always be happy to hear from members with ideas about our kitchen and bar.

More Junior News Congratulations to the latest juniors to pass their basic coaching course & receive certificates from Club President Bennie Bennett - Dominic Camisa, Michael Landy and Josh Tomley (grandson of Peter). We wish them many happy years of bowling. Welcome to two new juniors - sisters Treana and Nessa Smith; daughters of club member Dave Smith. We wish the girls all the best as they embark on their training course. th Sunday 26 January 2014 saw a first for Pavilion and possibly for the indoor county. We are entering an under eighteen team in the SCIBA event at Arun IBC i.e. the John Bates Challenge Trophy. alongside senior team-mates. However, exclusively junior wins against adult opponents are rare so when they occur they are worth flagging up. Congratulations to Lauren Brennan for two wins in the ladies singles and to Lauren and Stephen Clarke-Lambert who as a duo won in the Australian Pairs. To spare the blushes of the adult competition we will allow them the shield of ‘clever’ anagrams. So commiserations to Pharon Sratt, Cat Pripps, Waul Pilson and Aarol Crtley. Yes, that last one really doesn't work but it's the thought that counts.
