he had to have a triple heart bypass operation. Playing rugby became a thing of the past and so Charlie took up bowls and joined Pavilion Bowling Club. He was a regular and popular attendee at the both the spoon drives and the matinee triples soon becoming a very formidable opponent at the club. To sum up, Charlie could be stubborn and argumentative but was also a kind, generous, loving and caring family man who showed great courage and strength. Alas, he eventually suffered from heart failure. Charlie will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with Julie and family at this sad and difficult time.
Raymond Bivand Playing Matters Charles Ward 1946 –2019 The Maybridge Community Church in Goring was packed for a thanksgiving th service on 27 November 2019 to celebrate the life of Charlie Ward, a popular member of Pavilion Bowling Club who died suddenly whilst a patient th at the Royal Hospital, Brighton on 14 November 2019. Charlie was born in Edgware hospital in 1946 and was diagnosed with diabetes at the tender age of three. He lived in a children’s home in his early years as his mother was unable to look after him. She died when Charlie was just ten years old. Charlie passed the eleven plus and went to grammar school, he was a keen sportsman and became a supporter and follower of Luton Town FC and latterly Arsenal FC.

The inimitable and Unforgettable Charlie Ward
He did have a motorcycle which he eventually sold and bought a drum kit. This inspired his grandson Josh to learn to play the drums which indeed he did brilliantly at Charlie’s thanksgiving service whilst a family photo-video montage was shown on the big screen in the community church hall. Charlie and his wife Julie were married in 1980 and had three sons and in turn five grandchildren. Charlie was absolutely devastated by the loss of Dave, one of his sons, in 2007. Charlie’s health began to fail him around the turn of the century, i.e. the millennium, but notwithstanding his diabetes, he never had a day off sick from work. In 2003, his leg had to be amputated after some four years of pain and later

The game is played in the same format as the national Denny Cup with two rinks at each venue and an accumulated score of all four rinks. The Away teams of Ray Leggett, John Winkley, Steve Ireland, Alex Paine and Howard Gates, Alan Vidler, Bill Murphy John Frew were both successful in a 40:35 win although the home team of Garry Olver, Dave Thomas, Simon Davey, Mark Strong went down late in the game by a diminishing four shots 15:19, Jeremy Simpson, Warwick Davis, Graham Ives and Andy Clarke won 34:5 to see Pavilion comfortably through. Sharon Pratt Pavilion ‘Pirates’ pummelled at Grattons The Omens of dark clouds all around on th Sunday the 24 day of November 2019 were not good as the already depleted six gun crews of the rampaging Pavilion’ Pirates’ sallied forth individually in crews

towards Crawley with the evil intent of crushing the carrion crows of ‘Grattons’ Note:- ‘Gratton’ in Olde English has several meanings e.g. a place infested with crows, a clearing, a great hill or enclosure etc. Arriving at ‘Grattons’ the lead crew immediately captured a ‘Grattons’ warrior and bribed her to join the ‘Pirates’ replacing the missing member who was suffering a sudden attack of scurvy and no other volunteers for this perilous mission had been available..Thus one Patricia Sandiford, of ‘Grattons’ accepted and joined ‘Pirates’ crew No.five. Rules of engagement and lines of battle were quickly decided between captains of the day Phil Carter and Neil Cole. The first shots were fired by the ‘Pirates’ at 4 bells (2pm) and it was noted that ‘Grattons’ had installed some heavy guns on their decks. ‘Grattons’ had prepared well. The battle raged with the ‘Pirates’ suffering more shots than were received on four gun decks, with only two gun crews delivering more shots than received. ‘Pirates’ No.four gun crew had suffered a massive hit due to ‘Grattons’ No four gun crews persistent accuracy. ‘Pirates’ No’s one, three and five gun crews were also suffering continuous hits from ‘Grattons’ crews heavy guns. Crews No two and six were fighting well but after ten broadsides the ‘Pirates’ had suffered fifty-seven hits and delivered forty-eight into ‘Grattons’ decks. Both sides being exhausted, a truce was called at seven bells (3:30 pm) and retired for refreshment. The battle resumed a quarter hour before eight bells (4.pm) and was fought with no quarter asked and none being given. The ‘Pirates’ suffered on gun decks one, three, four and six receiving more hits than received but with decks two and five holding firm until an armistice was called at a quarter of the hour past two bells (5:15 pm). Only ‘Pirates’ gun crew No.two, lead by Commander Dave Thomas had survived intact delivering twenty-eight hits against thirteen received, whilst crew No. five Commander Jim Lindup suffered three shots below the waterline on the twentieth broadside and finally receiving nineteen hits to eighteen given on the twenty-first broadside having fought a hard battle. ‘Grattons’ demanded the return of their warrior and showed clemency by allowing the ‘Pirates’ to refresh themselves on a superb feast before they returned to their craft and licking their wounds, scurried away at 5 bells (6.30 pm) to the safety of the Pavilion HQ.

Phil Carter Breach of Bye-Law
I couldn’t help but notice an appeal on the notice board on behalf of a member whose motorcar was subject to a hit and run whilst parked in the club car park. Such incidents seem to be coming more prevalent and breaches club bye-law 13 that stipulates that all Pavilion Bowling Club members have a duty of care when driving in the car park(s) of the club and if they cause damage to another vehicle or club property the incident must be reported to the secretary’s office who will then inform the person whose car has been damaged. Failure to observe this Bye-Law would be considered `Gross Misconduct’ Should anyone have any information about this or other incident they ought to report same to the secretary, after all your car may be next to fall victim. If this occurred on the public highway it would amount to a criminal offence.

PAVILION POST through via a knock out basis and if successful participate in county finals day at the end of the season. The national competitions are also arranged by mutual agreement against a set deadline however this is an “open draw” effectively placing all the Sussex area entrants into a single division. For club and individual entries, players progress through via a knock out basis (except Under 18 Two Rink Triples) and if successful through to the national finals at the end of the indoor season where they will represent Sussex against all other county winners for the title of national champions. This leads to a further chance to represent England in the home nations tournament. Mark Strong (Men’s Team Manager) / Sharon Pratt (Ladies Team Manager)
