short but aggressive illness. Despite being expected Alan’s passing still sent ripples of shock through the club, such was his popularity. Alan had been a keen sportsman throughout his life and armed with that competitive streak he became a very competent and successful bowler. He was also a regular stalwart at the club spoondrive sessions. You often heard his opponents talk amusingly about how they had been outmuzzelled by Alan after losing a game with him. He was an engraver by profession and had his own business in Northcourt Road, Worthing. Up and until his retirement Alan kindly engraved the numerous cups awarded to competition winners at the club. A mammoth task to say the least. Without doubt Alan will be sadly missed at Pavilion and our thoughts are with Lyn and Alan’s wider family at this sad and difficult time.

PC Cup Worthing Pavilion completed their WSBL programme when they played Tarring Priory in the PC Cup Final on Sunday. The game was close until halfway when the rink of George Rhodes, Dave Thomas, Simon Davey and Mark Strong went on a scoring spree. Leading 11 – 8 at 10 ends they eventually won 51 – 8 to secure the victory. The rink of Jeremy Simpson, Bryan Bodicoat, Alan Palmer and John Frew were the other Pavilion winning rink with a 21 – 15 win to give Pavilion victory by 37 shots.

Winter only members are reminded their subscriptions are due now. Members are reminded to take extra care on the greens, as there have been a few incidents where members have fallen into the outdoor ditches. In the event of an accident details should be recorded in the accident book that is now hanging on the notice board adjacent to the secretary’s office. I recently reported that a fair amount of unattended /found property had accumulated in the secretary’s office. If this property is not claimed it will shortly be disposed of without further notice.

PAVILION POST Late Contribution New Handicap System for Competitions Over a long period there have always been murmurs and moans about how the club handicaps are calculated. To address these concerns a handicap committee has been formed consisting of: Bryan Bodicoat: Acting Club Captain, Gerry Shallis: Competition Secretary, Mark Strong: Worthing Pavilion Team Manager, Kevin Batchelor: Pavilion Bulls Team Manager, Richard Calvert: Senior Coach. This range of experience and knowledge across the club membership is deliberate to enable accurate assessments. Background: Over the last ten years the Singles Handicap Competition has been won nine times by the higher rated handicap players, thus suggesting the handicap range is too narrow preventing a lower handicap rating player from competing on a level playing field. This year the committee decided that we would try to make it reflect the facts as we have them. Target: Club entries have declined most years, we want people playing bowls so this review must reflect members performance and achievements and amend ratings accordingly to make competitions competitive and attractive to all players. Proposal: We now have a considerable database on the games that members have played and these have been applied to a new handicap method. This is based on the games played over a 12 month period and includes the performance of the higher rated players in the Club at local, County and International levels. To outline this approach this is the rational taken by the handicap committee: 1. Singles winners will set the bench mark at a minimum handicap of 10. 2. The following data will be reviewed annually to assess as accurately as possible for positive or negative progress: Club competition performance. Sussex County League representation. 3. The following achievements will result in an additional 1 shot uplift added for either from the previous year’s assessment. Sussex Liberty and Home Counties selection or Sussex County winner. 4. International players automatically would have 2 shots added from the highest awarded rating. The result of this review will reduce the average handicap for the majority of players and increasing for those competing at county level, thus making competitions more competitive. Please look out for these newer ratings as they will be in place for all handicap competitions effective Indoors 2019.
