Kiwi’s at Pavilion New Zealand Internationals set to Practice at Pavilion The World Visually Impaired Bowling Championship is being hosted at Beach House Park this year, between 8th and 18th July. The New Zealand team have contacted Pavilion; after discovering the club on Facebook; and sought permission to use our facilities as a base for practicing for the tournament. After discussing the issue, the board of directors agreed to allow the New Zealander’s to use the club as their base for the duration of the tournament. It is anticipated that there will be eight bowlers; accompanied by eight assistants; coming to Worthing. The board of directors trust that club members will give our guests the usual Pavilion warm and cordial welcome, afforded to all our visitors. Apart from helping the visitors, it is hoped this will also generate positive publicity for the club.

Amendment Playing Matters Last month, the date of the Ladies’ match against Horsham Ladies, was th shown as 5 April, when it should have read 5th March 2013. My mistake. However, contributor Carol Tillet was subsequently approached by the eagleeyed reader; who first spotted the mistake, to see if she could foretell the result of Pavilion’s upcoming league match against Egerton Park, but alas Carol isn’t psychic.

On Thursday 11 April 2012 twenty or so members of the club attended the meeting at Pavilion organised by Esme and Frank Clough to discuss the format for organised indoor play during the coming summer season. There were a number of apologies for absence given to Esme. However the number of members interested was still

around the thirty mark, which makes the prospect viable. There was a general consensus that there should be a triples league; of fourteen ends, on Monday mornings 10am - 12pm and an Australian Pairs league; again of fourteen ends, on Thursday mornings 10am - 12pm. Those not playing in the leagues on either day will be able to participate in a roll-up, the scores of which will be reflected in an aggregate score table. Provisional teams were drawn at the meeting and team leaders seconded. Unfortunately there was little or no interest shown for playing matches against other indoor clubs so; disappointedly, this was not pursued at the time. The opening date for the leagues will be th on Monday 6 May 2013. There will still be an opportunity for other club members to join in and be assimilated into existing teams.

We needed four and a half points to be virtually certain to remain in Division One - sadly we could only rack up three points; with two of our rinks losing by mere two and five shots respectively. Clunky Clarke generously supplied a number of allegedly ‘Lucky’ Leprechauns to support the cause. I can only conclude that they must have been fake rather than genuine!! During the season there have been no less than eighteen occasions when one of the six rinks has lost by between one and five shots; and of these, seven times by one shot! We have lost three matches by four, six and eleven shots respectively; whereas our closest rivals Falaise, Worthing and Arun have won matches by four, three and two shots respectively. As has been said on previous occasions we are as a club, very small fry when compared to the other clubs in the league. Whilst being disappointed at the final outcome of what has been a closely fought campaign we must not lose sight of the positives. We are very much in the ‘work in progress’ stage and have successfully blooded some new players. We have a number of stable rinks in place and with a bit more fine tuning; with the addition of a couple of well established players next indoor season; there is no reason why we should not return to division one in 12 month’s time. I would personally wish to take this opportunity to thank Bern Alcoe and John Frew for their generous assistance, also the players for their unqualified support and commitment team spirit right to the very end has been superb.

We couldn't have had two more challenging draws to conclude the season! Everyone played their hearts out.

PAVILION POST Pavilion v Langney Sports th

On Sunday 10 April 2013 Pavilion played the last friendly match of the indoor season against Langney Sports Bowls Club at Pavilion. Despite a comfortable win of 137-87 with five rinks to one in favour of Pavilion, some extremely competitive bowling could be seen taking place across the rinks. On our own rink, the lead kept alternating end on end and by the penultimate end we were still level pegging, but managed a three on the last end to sew our game up. In all, the match provided a very enjoyable afternoon’s bowling.

The word is that Barry will be joining Grattons IBC. We wish him well for the future.

Touring Club Now that the outdoor season has arrived and hardy frantically search for that lifesaving wet weather gear, it may be a good opportunity to once again emphasise the care and respect that should be shown to the greens, especially after a harsh winter that has affected both growth and rooting.

Bournemouth - September 2013 We have thirty names on the list so we should be able to put out five rinks most days, but I would really like a few more of you to consider this tour and place your names on the sheet. All the details are on the notice board. I will need to finalise this tour by the end of May and will ask Don to collect the appropriate deposits then, so please put you names down as soon as possible.

Barry Torode  We find ourselves saying farewell to Barry Torode; coach, juniors’ mentor and past club captain, who is moving to the Crawley area. Barry a past member of Norfolk BC and Arundel BC joined Pavilion in 2006.

 

Do not drop litter into the ditch. Use the bins provided. Do not run on the green. Take care when using the bowls collectors. Clumsiness can cause damage to both bowls and the green.

Junior Section On Sunday 7 April 2013 two of Pavilion’s Junior Section namely Lauren and James Brennan, were at Horsham IBC in the English Bowls Development Skills Area Final. Lauren played quite well, but James did not play as well as he did Saturday (perhaps the finals win of the previous day had taken its toll) He must have peaked Saturday, as he didn't have a great day; they were up against some tough competition. Lauren won two of her matches and drew one; James lost all three matches (he likes to keep pointing out to me, two of them were in the final). They did not do too badly on their skills, but not as good as they have in the past. Lauren has been asked by the county president to put her name down for the ladies’ under 25’s. James is registering for the men's under 25’s.

  

During the early part of the season move the position of the mat and do try to avoid milling about in the 2m area unnecessarily. This will help even the wear and tear of the grass. Always deliver the wood close and parallel to the ground. Do not bounce or drop your bowls! Doing so can cause serious damage to the green. Do not sit on the banks with your feet on the edge of the green. This could cause serious damage. Do not tread on the edge of the green. This again can cause serious damage. Do not use mobile phones whilst on or near the green. Mobile phones may be carried on the green; but only with the approval of a director; in silent mode. Do not smoke on the green.

Just to confirm I am still waiting for the confirmation on our rebook with the offer price of £170.00 for a standard room. They are installing a new computer system which is not quite ready, but hopefully by the time of the next Post there will be a notice on the board outlining the details. I will assume that everybody who went last time will join us, so your name will be on the list. If you don’t want to go back please delete your name so that I can find replacements if needed.

Outdoor Tour - September 2014 At the A.G.M. it was mentioned that we should return to Bembridge to do an outdoor tour of the I.O.W. But as we are now returning there in March Don and I have decided to look elsewhere. I am currently looking at touring in Somerset, possibly Weston Super Mare, as I have a business associate who lives there and is currently investigating hotels on my behalf, so watch this space. I have had various other suggestions which I will look into and keep you informed.

PAVILION POST Mens Meeting th

On Thursday 18 April 2013 the lounge at Pavilion was packed with around thirty members for the Mens’ Spring Meeting. The minutes of the last meeting held during April 2012 were agreed; there were no matters arising. Captain Paul Wilson gave a resumë of his year in office and how well things had progressed for him, with few problems with members putting their names down for selection. He thanked Vice-Captain Edward Cripps for all his help. Paul is continuing in office until the end of the outdoor season, which will see both men and ladies’ captains being elected simultaneously. Match Secretary Alan SweetmanHicks explained that a number of clubs; the likes of Purley Bury; have pulled out of fixtures, due to the ever increasing travel costs. However, a number of other clubs; some touring; have filled the vacant spaces. The number of matches with meals has also reduced. One new fixture which caused a stir was the forthcoming match against the Royal Household at Windsor late June. The fixture card indicates there will be a meal after the match; or will it be a royal banquet? Alan was congratulated on his grasp of his office in his first season. Competition Secretary Gerry Shallis started off by saying the completion of score-cards had improved; if only they had. There is still a way to go before they can be considered acceptable. Internal leagues had progressed satisfactorily; whilst there is still room for more teams across the board. Disappointingly, there were only eleven teams entered in the Monday evening Triples League and seven teams in the Tuesday rinks. The Friday night invitation fours competition was unbalanced, with twelve teams in the red division and seven in the blue division. There was talk of one team withdrawing. Even the Easter Tournament suffered. What was a week-end long event has been condensed into just one day, the Easter Monday, with only twelve teams entered. The club presentation evening will be th on Thursday 16 May 2013 with a fun drive and buffet. League Team Manager Brian Lee

gave an account of the highs and lows regarding how the county league campaign had progressed. Brian thanked Bernie Alcoe and John Frew for their help as co-selectors, during the season. Chris Scott will be standing in for Bernie Alcoe this season. Playing Director Don Elliott then spoke of an impending review of the mens’ handicapping system and invited suggestions from members. It was a suggested that the ladies’ section handicapping needs to be brought in line with that of the mens’ section, to make it fairer and simpler in mixed handicapped competitions. A discussion then followed regarding the subject of rinks fees for county matches. The meeting ended about 8pm.
