Planetbowls’ WE After months of meticulous planning by organiser Warwick Davis, assisted by Gerry Shallis and Keith Wadhams, the Planetbowls Circus eventually rolled into rd a sunny Worthing on Saturday 3 May 2014 for their first ever outdoor bowling tournament and held here at Pavilion.
What was to prove a glorious weekend; weather wise, attracted some ninety or so competitors from across the UK to Worthing to take part in the tournament. Entrants came from as far afield as Devon, Somerset, Dorset , East Anglia and East Kent. I am sure that I also heard a Welsh accent somewhere as well. It had been hoped to attract one hundred and twenty entries to the tournament, perhaps next year? There was also a small nucleus of players from Pavilion who entered the competition, some progressing well past the first rounds, of whom four reached the semi-finals in both of the competitions. The tournament was formally opened Saturday morning by the Mayor of Worthing Bob Smytherman who delivered the first bowl of the weekend. The format of the individual matches was to be played over two sets of seven ends, with a tie break decider of three extra ends. Players who did not win their first match were automatically entered into a plate competition that guaranteed them a second game; albeit for one reason or another, some were overlooked. Despite all the planning, the weekend still proved to be hectic for Warwick, Gerry and Keith, collecting the score cards and unravelling the results, before making the draw for the next rounds.

On average the matches seemed to last for about one and a half hours, leaving just half an hour or so between the rounds.

The overall winner of the main competition was Adur IBC member Scott Edwards who beat Pavilion’s Gavin Beven 9-4 : 8-2 to land the £1,500 first prize. Seemingly this was Scott’s second and successive Planetbowls victory, winning the Adur IBC Open only last month. The winner of the plate competition was Darren Anderson from Hove, who narrowly beat Pavilion’s Simon Warr 6-5 : 6-4. Planetbowls Director Stephen Roberts expressed that the event had surpassed his expectations and would be the foundation for more outdoor events. There are plans for another Planetbowls’ tournament at Pavilion over the May bank holiday in 2015 followed by a grand final between the season’s top thirty-two players; that will also be held at Pavilion; during the latter part of September 2015. Warwick wishes to express his thanks to all of those who volunteered to help out and make the weekend such a resounding success; you all know who you are! Thanks also to Dave, Yvonne and their helpers who excelled with the catering and not forgetting the bar staff, who also worked under considerable pressure throughout the weekend.

Steyning Bowling Club
Steyning Bowling Club was founded in 1933 but it took another thirty-three years before ladies were admitted to the club and form their own section. Whilst a new venue for the Men’s Section, Pavilion Ladies are no strangers to this venue, having regularly played matches there over the years.
Worthing Rotary Club Visually Impaired Tournament We held the above tournament on the th 14 May and we were blessed with good weather. Five teams competed for the Worthing Rotary Club’s trophies. This competition has been running since 1988, making this the twenty-seventh
furthest to travel, with their Labrador dogs that behaved impeccably. The day started with a meal provided by Yvonne and Dave and this was very well received by all who attended. As we had so few teams we decided to run it as a league, the first time we had tried this format. It proved to be very successful. This league format was organised by Gordon Kibbles and the computer wizardry was supplied by Gerry Shallis. This competition is fairly difficult to run as we have to give handicaps to any sighted players in the teams. To have Gerry’s computer skills on hand and be able to provide up-to-date score sheets after every round of the competition was really appreciated by all the teams competing. Special thanks go to Ron Jeanneret and to Maurice Gooch who acted as scorers on the rink and made the event go so smoothly. The league was five rounds of five ends per round, each team playing four games (due to the odd number of teams). The new format worked very well albeit the games were quite time consuming, as many of the competitors are completely blind and great care has to be taken getting them on and off the rinks. It really is amazing to watch a completely blind bowler draw three shots in a triples match, all of which were within one foot of the jack. After the first round of matches Hastings ‘B’ were in the lead with Bognor ‘C’ in second place. The lead stayed the same after the second round. In the third round the lead had changed and Bognor ‘C’ had taken the lead with Hastings ‘B’ second. The fourth round was a critical point in the tournament and after this round Bognor ‘C’ had taken a lead which proved that they could not be beaten in the league. Hastings ’B’ confirmed their

New Fixtures New friendly fixtures this month include mixed matches with Middleton BC and East Preston BC, both historically league matches. This month we shall be welcoming tourists from RHP Bowling Club Chelmsford, as well as Brentwood Bowling Club. We’ll also be playing away at Byfleet, and Tarring Priory at home. Byfleet Bowling Club was formed in 1925, followed soon after by the Ladies Club, Byfleet Ladies Bowling Club.

time Pavilion has run the event. This year proved quite difficult as so many clubs we wrote to were unable to field teams. In the end only two clubs sent teams, three from Bognor Beavers and two from Hastings Visually Impaired Club; the two clubs that have the Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
position as runners-up. We finished the tournament at 5.30pm after playing only four rounds, time had beaten us. The trophies were presented by the Rotary Club President Tony Sayers, accompanied by the Rotary organiser 2
PAVILION POST Derek Gardiner. Photographs of the winning teams were taken by Malcolm Gilbey, who acted as host to our sponsors for the day. At the presentation of trophies a very moving speech was made by the winning Bognor skip Chris who said how all the teams appreciated the effort that Worthing Pavilion had put in to organise the event and promised that he would do everything that he could, to try to keep the programme in the Visually Impaired calendar. The teams who attended the Tournament really did seem to enjoy the day and this is what makes running an event such as this so completely worthwhile.
Richard Calvert A Word from the Bridge The Captain’s Dilemma When Pat and I joined WPBC we were looking to extend our sporting experiences. We both had pursued various sports in our youth and later years. We were also looking to meet new people and to make new friends having recently moved to the coast. At first we fulfilled our ambitions and thoroughly enjoyed our bowling and when I was asked to take on the role of Captain I was very honoured, and still am, but I am no longer able to enjoy my bowling. The indoor season did not prepare me for what was to become, the nightmare outside. Members are reluctant to enter names for the outside matches and I have to pester, harass and cajole people in order to fulfill our fixtures. I feel that I am upsetting friends because of the need to chase names to play in friendly matches. I have had to reduce rinks to triples, even reduce the required number of rinks in total. Worst of all I have had to cancel matches completely, because of the lack of support. A recently cancelled match for instance was a mixed match, where only one lady had put her name on the list for selection. Out of approximately seventy outdoor matches this season over 50% are mixed matches. This type of response does not bode well. All these problems are costing the club, (YOUR CLUB) and I feel responsible. I understand the need for league and county matches and realise that these matches carry a deal of kudos for the club, but the friendly fixtures are equally as important for a vibrant club.
THE CLUB NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT IF YOU HAVE ANY HELPFUL ADVICE I WILL BE ‘ALL EARS’. Your attendance at important meetings is also required so that your views are aired. Change is needed and if you have a point of view that can assist the change or help the discussion of how things can be improved please put them forward if, indeed, you think improvement is required.
Edward Cripps
The latest cancellation by Hayes & District BA owing to Pavilion being unable to field a side; insofar that only ten members made themselves available for selection; is likely to cost the club dearly in compensatory penalties. New club members are especially welcome to put themselves forward for selection for friendlies. They are sure to enjoy the experience if they are selected. At the cut-off date, we had played ten matches, seven at home with one loss and three away matches, with one win.

Monthly Review of Friendly Matches The outdoor season got off to a good start with the weather for the opening drive being quite settled, well that was until the last few ends. The greens were quite firm and stood up well to the afternoon’s play and on their first outing and the new bowls’ pushers proved that they were well worth the outlay. There were a few hiccups earlier on in the season with, Seaford BC cancelling th the friendly match on 26 April. As it happened, the weather took a turn for the worse that weekend and the greens became quite waterlogged and at Vince’s request, were closed over the th th weekend 26 - 27 . Our visitors from Ewell BC on that Sunday were disappointed that the greens were unplayable, but agreed to play indoors. Due to lack of support we had to cancel the Southwater match; which in itself could result in losing future fixtures. The away friendly match with Hurstpierpoint was mutually cancelled at the last moment due to the heavy rain. The fixture list proved to be quite heavy during the past month. Typically there was a sad lack of players making themselves available for selection for many of the friendly matches and that created extra work and expense for the match captain, in press-ganging extra club members to make up the lack of players. We continually ask members to support the captain; and the club; by making themselves available for friendly matches. These friendly matches are financially vital for the future of the club. Clearly our pleas still tend to fall on deaf ears. Every cancellation can have repercussions, whether financially, in compensatory payments, loss of future fixtures and they also don’t hold the club in a good light within the bowling fraternity.

Editor Ladies’ Section Review The ladies had a good start to the season with a victory in their opening league match against Aldingbourne, by winning on both rinks and taking all six points. In the Sussex Top Club competition the ladies beat Norfolk Bowling Club three games to one and are now into the third round with a home tie against Chichester.

Monthly Review ‘A’ Team Pavilion ‘A’ team played Norfolk BC on st our turf on Wednesday 21 May and I am delighted to be able to report that our winning streak continues, having claimed seven of the ten points on offer. So close to being a clean sweep as well.
Brian Lee Monthly Review ‘C’ Team Following their promotion as Division 3 Champions in 2013, Pavilion's ‘C’ team began their 2014 campaign away to a sunny Arundel. The beautiful but always damp green; it lies between castle moat and the River Arun, lived up to its advance reputation for trickiness. The visiting team found it hard going, but the eventual result; a two shot win for Pavilion, was perfect proof of the old adage i.e. every rink, every end, even every shot being vital to the overall outcome.

PAVILION POST Coaching Update
After the open weekend we had fiftynd four people to coach and by the 22 May we had thirty-seven people under coaching, or having completed their coaching course. All the coaches are giving up a lot of their spare time and working very hard to clear this very large number. Our thanks go to them for their hard work and dedication. When it goes well and the trainees are really interested, it is very rewarding and to see them making massive improvements throughout the course can be very fulfilling. Although we have eleven coaches, at peak times we are very busy, however during the year it can be very spasmodic. We tell you this as we appeal to the membership to see if there are any members who would like to take up coaching. We also really would like at least one or maybe more lady members to become coaches. Please read our advert on this page. A number of members are taking advantage of the video coaching, that the coaching team offer to all members. We hear of players who change their bowls at frequent intervals, but never think that perhaps it may be their delivery that is causing the problem. Once you see your delivery on the I-Pad you are able to identify any faults and hopefully correct them, with a little bit of help. The offer is there; it is up to you, it could save you a lot of money!
