Graham Michael Ward 1941-2018 Members of Pavilion joined a hugely packed Kingswood Chapel at Worthing Crematorium on the afternoon of th Thursday 12 April to celebrate the life of Graham Ward. Graham had lived much of his working life in Worthing and particularly with Nissan/Datsun. He was a very able ten pin bowling player and played in some of the top leagues. Graham also gave a great deal of his time as coach to the West Durrington Youth Football Club. His children and friends spoke eloquently and warmly of a real 24/05/2018
A very heavy contingent of Pavilion members joined a large congregation of family, Masonic members, friends and members of Hill Barn Golf Club at the Kingswood Chapel at Worthing Crematorium on the morning of nd Wednesday 2 May, to celebrate the life of LeoThompson. Leo, a former captain and long standing member of Pavilion will be remembered for his bowls prowess, fun and humour. The congregation learned that he was a consummate sportsman, cricketer, golfer and bowler. In his younger days he was offered the post of entertainer on a cruise liner but

When we have visitors we really do not have very much control of how they bowl, but we do have to make sure our own members, who have the greatest use of the greens by far, are bowling well. If you feel you would like some help, just contact one of the coaches and we would be delighted to discreetly give you some pointers. We have been coaching ten new people from the open weekend, so far eight have joined the club and the other two are still under coaching and are due to finish in the next few weeks. We really hope that the remaining two will join the club to give us a 100% success rate.

Coaching News Have any of you had a look in the cupboards/club lockers, loft etc, if you haven’t could you please have a look to see if you have any sets of bowls languishing around doing nothing. If you have, would you please give a thought to donating them to the coaching team, we are always looking to update our stock of bowls. Many of the ones we have, that are not used for coaching, are very old and somewhat large. These days nobody seems to want to play with size 5 bowls and we even have difficulty with size 4 bowls. So if you have any bowls especially size 2 down to 00 that you feel need recycling then we would be very grateful if you could donate them to the coaching team, I can assure you they will be put to very good use. Now we are fully into the outdoor season we are very aware of the damage that can be caused to our fantastic greens by bad bowling. Even after a few days bowling there are marks on the green which really should not be there. If you feel you are having difficulty making a clean delivery the team have many ways that we can adapt your delivery to prevent damage and keep you bowling outdoors.
Rink Possession You may often receive advice from someone, that once you step off the mat, you have lost possession of the mat. This is not so, there is nothing in the Laws of the game to support this. The issue surrounds the possession of the rink i.e. 13 Possession of the rink
or team declared dead. If that bowl has disturbed the head, the opponent must choose whether to: 13.3.2.1 replace the head; 13.3.2.2 leave the head as altered; or 13.3.2.3 declare the end dead. Position of Players 12.1.1 Players at the mat-end of the rink who are not delivering a bowl must stand at least one metre behind the mat. 12.1.2 Players at the head-end of the rink and who are not controlling play must stand: 12.1.2.1 behind the jack if they are members of the team which is in possession of the rink; 12.1.2.2 behind the jack and away from the head if they are members of the team which is not in possession of the rink; 12.1.2.3 on the surrounds of the green if the jack is in the ditch; or 12.1.2.4 well clear of the head if it is not possible to stand on the surrounds. 12.1.3 As soon as a bowl is delivered, a player who is controlling play from a position that is either level with or in front of the jack, must take their position as described in law 12.1.2. 12.1.4 If a player does not meet the terms of this law, law 13 will apply.

13.1
Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. 13.2 As soon as each bowl comes to rest, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player or team after allowing time for marking a toucher as soon as it comes to rest. 13.3 If the umpire, either by their own observation or on appeal by one of the skips or opponents in Singles, decides that the players in possession of the rink are being interfered with, annoyed or distracted in any way by their opponents, 13.3.1 the first time this happens the umpire must: 13.3.1.1 warn the offending player, while the skip is present; and 13.3.1.2 tell the coach, if they are present, that the player has received a warning. 13.3.2 on each occasion after this, the umpire must have the bowl last played by the offending player Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

PAVILION POST
The clock is ticking!! The Annual General Meeting will be held in late September/early October. At this meeting the club must elect a new secretary and there will be several vacancies for directors. The club cannot continue to function without a club secretary and members coming forward to volunteer for the other roles. I would urge everyone to seriously consider taking on some of the responsibility for running this great club – even if it is only for a year or so. Incidentally, there has been talk within the club of having to appoint a paid secretary. This would mean we would have to contemplate £60 plus on our subscriptions. DO WE REALLY NEED TO GO DOWN THIS ROUTE??
