Playing Matters:
His family moved to Worthing in 1939 where Ronnie continued playing music. He was called up for national service in 1944 and unsurprisingly found himself in the band of the Royal Artillery in which he played the saxophone.

The inimitable and unforgettable Ronnie Keene
Ronnie Keene 1926-2017 On the afternoon of Wednesday 16th August 2017 club members gathered with family and friends at Worthing Crematorium for the funeral of Ronnie Keene and to celebrate his remarkable life. Ronnie passed away peacefully at his th home on 28 July 2017 with his wife Christine at his side. Ronnie was a past member of Pavilion Bowling Club well into his eighties and a regular attendee at the spoon-drives, until his frailty prevented him from continuing bowling. Despite not playing bowls Ronnie did manage a rare visit to the club to catch up with his fellow spoon-drivers. He was a true gentleman and a popular member of the club. th Born in London on 15 June 1926 he started his musical journey at the tender age of 7 years by learning to play the piano.

After his army service Ronnie had his first big break in 1948 when he joined the Ken Mackintosh big band in Nottingham. He went on to lead his own band and performed at various prestigious venues the like the London Palladium, along with Buddy Holly (1958) Frankie Vaughan and Des O’Connor. Ronnie had a narrow escape in 1984 after performing at the Grand Hotel Brighton. He apparently left the Grand some fifteen minutes before the terrible IRA bomb attack on the hotel. After retiring Ronnie turned to golf and bowling both of which he thoroughly enjoyed. Albeit retired Ronnie continued with his music and often could be found entertaining guests at the restaurant at Shoreham Airport. Our thoughts are with his wife Christine and family at this sad time.

Friendly Matches
Tues 03 Tues 10 Wed 25
These have proved to be a more contentious feature of the outdoor season. We started magnificently on May 1st, even though we lost the match, by fielding twelve rinks against Chippenham Tourists. Unfortunately this was prior to the start of national, county, league or matinee triples, when we found out that members priorities put friendly matches at the bottom of the pecking order . While all members have every right to demonstrate their preference, it does mean that we will need to look carefully before arranging such matches in the future. By the time you read this the club will have returned from, hopefully, a successful tour to Salisbury, having played against a number of different clubs. It seems a pity that not all tourists wish to reciprocate when we entertain touring sides. We have continually struggled to get sufficient numbers for the friendly games, and have often only succeeded following e-mails being sent to club members by Secretary Peter Woods, for which I am most grateful. The matches against Rottingdean were cancelled due to lack of support, and those with Aldingbourne did not take place through a misunderstanding, but the greatest ignominy was on June14th when we were unable to field seven rinks ( reduced from the original eight) against West Bridgford. After much heartache, and agreeing to pay their costs, we were able to get Maltravers to supply two rinks - and they added to our embarrassment by being the top two winning rinks. At the end of May we hosted Horsham in the first leg of the Friendship Cup, and although we won by a total of fourteen shots we feared that this would be insufficient when we played the away leg. However, we managed to retain the cup after only losing by four shots at Horsham. Even though this was a men’s game we were unable to persuade twenty-four men to play and had to rely three ladies plus the walking wounded with Richard Calvert and Ted Cripps agreeing to play despite their recent health problems - sincere thanks to both of them and the ladies for helping us out. This fixture has now been changed to mixed and so, with luck, should be easier to fill in the future. Apart from the opening game we have won all our other home friendlies, except for West Sussex Tourists which we lost by eight shots. It is hoped that the indoor friendly fixtures will not face the same difficulties due to the influx of players from the Mavericks and that, by and large, the

Captain’s Column OUTDOOR SEASON ROUND-UP The outdoor season is drawing to a close and it is time to reflect. You will all be aware of the success the club has achieved in national, county and league competitions this year, but I would like to concentrate on the aspects within the Captain's remit.
Stracey / Brodie We re-entered the Stracey Shield (which was contested over sixteen matches of four x four rinks) and the Brodie Tray (six matches of four x four triples) for a number of reasons - to compensate for dropping a team from the WSBL, to encourage less experienced bowlers to play in competitive matches, plus the fact that it is a mixed league. The season has proved most satisfying on both fronts, at the time of writing we have won the Brodie Tray without losing a game and have used a total of thirtyseven different players. We also top the table in the Stracey Shield, having used sixty-five players, but because the table is not completely accurate I choose to withhold victory celebrations at present. In an attempt to encourage more clubs to enter a team in the Brodie Tray for 2018 the format will change from four triples to one rink, two triples and one pair.

matches will not clash with other distractions - I am looking forward to it!

Ladies’ Roundup
The ladies county finals were held on th 29 July at Haywards Heath Bowls Club and despite heavy rain everyone enjoyed an exciting day’s bowling. Helen Jones and Leah Taylor won the county pairs against Lindfield 26-16, and were joined by Nora Grief to play the county triples. Unfortunately they were runners-up in this match against Polegrove, losing 10-19. Lorraine Kuhler had initially played in the pairs and triples teams but had to pull out because of an injury sustained when on England duty. Sue Gubbins and Sharon Pratt won the semi-final of the unbadged Trixie Pairs against Downsman, 23-17 and then went on to win the final against Uckfield 20-12. In the county top club, our team will play West Hoathly in the final on th Saturday 9 September at Preston. We are extremely proud that Helen, Leah and Nora’s successes meant they qualified for Leamington in the pairs and triples. They played well but sadly lost their matches. Sue and Sharon will also play at Leamington in the Mixed Fours and we wish them luck. The ladies as a whole are having an excellent season and at the time of writing this, we await the results of two more matches to find out if they will finish the season top of their division in the league. Congratulations to all who have represented the club this summer.

Friendly Matches There is still a very worrying lack of members signing up for friendly matches. Several have had to be cancelled due to lack of viable numbers. A plea goes out to ALL members to offer to sign up for the remaining outdoor friendly matches. It seems absolutely crazy that, in a club of our size and capacity, that we cannot raise enough members to field teams. PLEASE THINK AGAIN. If there is an issue that you feel is the reason behind this problem please come and talk to Bryan or Peter so that they are aware and can therefore see what steps (if any) can be taken to resolve the issues. Failing that, the club is going to be much the poorer for lack of friendly matches.

On the lead up to the summer tour I couldn't resist reading online reviews associated with our hotel, some of which closely resembled a script from an episode of Fawlty Towers that brought tears to my eyes through laughing. That said the positive comments outweighed the negative, leading us to find the hotel comfortable, clean with extremely polite helpful staff. In the main the food was excellent, albeit the fixed menu did not suit everyone’s tastes. On Monday 4th September the tourists left Pavilion shortly after 9am by coach bound for the beautiful city of Salisbury. We stopped at the services area on the M27 for a short break before continuing to The Milford Hall Hotel; our base for the tour, where we arrived about 11.30pm and deposited our luggage. Coincidentally when coming out of the service concourse there was a Worthing Coaches coach and a Crawley Luxury coach parked next to each other in the car park. Despite our coach coming from Assisi Travel in Salisbury, our Graham Foreshaw apparently boarded the Worthing coach by mistake. Can’t you just imagine a fine in the offing? The coach then conveyed us to Amesbury Bowling Club where we received a most warm reception from our hosts, who had laid on lunch a splendid buffet lunch for us by prior to the match. A truly competitive match played in good spirits ensued that saw the Amesbury team lose by just one shot, 112 to Pavilion’s 113. Our hosts could only field three players on one rink and that cost them a forfeiture of 25% of that rinks score. Ah! but what might have been if Roger Humphrey’s rink

bemused as to where his bowling bag was? Possibility of another fine? John Southern President of Wiltshire BA and a trustee of Amesbury B.C. also played in the match but was late arriving at the green as he had completely forgotten the fixture. John just so happened to be a longtime friend of Tim and had advised him during the preliminary planning of the tour. Top rink went Alan Vidler’s rink, of Eddie Vidler, Tricia Baldwin and Barry Ledger, who despite having the same score as Tim’s

rink, had won one more end on the countback. After the formalities of post matches addresses by the captains, Tim carried out his usual kangaroo court, and fining members of our opposition for alleged misdemeanors they had committed during the match. This was warmly received by our hosts with some hilarity. Despite Tim’s warning, Malcolm Gardiner later admitted to having left his wet gear behind at Amesbury. Julie Mitchell, Amesbury’s secretary battled the elements on Tuesday with her husband to repatriate Malcolm with his wet weather gear at Salisbury B.C. luckily for him, as the weather turned out. Another fine on its way? Of course Julie may well have been more interested in seeing Ted Cripp’s garish shirt of the day. We were warmly welcomed by John Hurle the president of Salisbury B.C. who met the coach. Our hosts had arranged a selection of rolls and beverages for us prior to the match. Unfortunately it proved to be a grim afternoon for all players, not just the faint hearted, as the rain was relentless throughout, to the extent that the match was curtailed at eighteen ends with Pavilion winning 109 to Salisbury’s 84. Top rink went to Rick Bauman’s crew of Alan Page, Ted Cripps and Bernie Homer, who even picked up an extra six shots on the final end for a convincing win. Despite the adverse conditions we witnessed some very good competitive bowling from both sides. After the match we had tea and biscuits followed by the customary addresses from both captains of the day.

PAVILION POST Tim ever the showman, carried out his usual ritual of awarding fines to members of the home team whom he deemed to have committed misdemeanors during the match.. Despite the foul weather everyone seemed to have enjoyed the bowling and each other's company. Oh, and it ceased raining shortly after the match had finished. John Eldridge leads the way at Alderbury B.C.
Warwick puts on brave face at Salisbury B.C.
Wednesday started off somewhat overcast but the risk of rain was <5% which proved to be an accurate forecast. We travelled to Alderbury Bowling Club for our third match of the tour, where we were warmly welcomed by Club President Stuart Sweetman. Alderbury B.C. had to secure the services of a number of players from other local clubs to field a side. Not dissimilar to our own predicaments at home. The facilities were first class for such a small club and the green looked in good condition. As we were soon to discover, the green was quite heavy and unforgiving, taking a fair time to get to grips with. An enjoyable but competitive game followed with lots of sunny spells thrown in for good measure. The final score was a victory to Alderbury who won five rinks to Pavilions one rink, along with 126 shots to Pavilion’s 96. Pavilions only winning rink of Peter Moore, Barry Ledger, Anthony Powell and John Eldridge, had a very tight battle with the hosts, going into tea on the tenth end 9-3 down. After tea the Pavilion team dug in and built a
commanding lead, but the hosts fought back to within one shot on the twentieth end. The final end was tense affair, but Pavilion pulled out the stops and managed to win a single shot which was enough to secure the win. Post-match addresses were made by the captains of the day at the close of play, after which Tim went about awarding fines to the home side for various misdemeanors, which as usual was well received. On Thursday the last day of the tour that came round far too quick really, we found ourselves the guests of Wilton Bowling Club that is situated in an idyllic location close by the River Wylye. On first sight of the green it was obvious that they had problems as there were so many humps, bumps and bare patches. The captain of Wilton Mike Crane apologised for the condition of the green with a brief account of the problems that they had encountered and that major work is planned over winter to get the green back to its former
Damaged green at Wilton B.C.
grandeur. We played twenty-one ends, with a short interruption of a rain shower half way through. The green did not play too well and took a while to get used to it. At the end of the match we had won three rinks apiece, but Wilton won by 107 shots to Pavilions 98. Pavilion top rink went to Tim Baldwin’s rink including Eddie Vidler, Barry Ledger and Norman Franklyn on a count back that saw Rick Bauman’s rink equal on score, but one end less than Tim e.g. Fourteen to Thirteen. After the captains’ addresses
Play underway at Wilton B.C.
post-match, Tim went about awarding fines to our hosts, to a great deal of laughter. A pleasant afternoons bowling was enjoyed by all. We returned to the hotel and later and after dinner Tim awarded the prize for the top lady to his dear wife Tricia, top male player Anthony Powell and a booby prize of a lemon presented to Warwick Davis. Thereafter Tim awarded fines for hilarious misdemeanors by tourists; too many to recount and raised £190.20, added to our hosts donations, a total of £326.23 for Cancer Research. Tim and Tricia have decided to stand down from organising the summer tours after five years, but will still organise the Bembridge tours that are so popular and relatively simpler to arrange. I am sure that all the tourists will join in thanking Tim, Tricia and Don for all their efforts in arranging the tours for our benefit. This year’s tour must rank as being one of the best. Tim and Tricia were presented with a token by Clyde Fordyce on behalf of the tourists.
