Touring Club On 26th February 2018 a record breaking party of pavilion tourists; numbering sixty-five and making up nine teams, made their way to Warner Coastal Hotel at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight to participate in the spring bowls bonanza tournament with a top prize of £1500 at stake. This annual tournament has grown in popularity over the years attracting one hundred and forty participants from across the country this year, which included a contingent from neighbours East Preston Bowling Club. The outward ferry crossing on Monday was quite choppy as we left Portsmouth due to the sea swell, consequently passengers had to get used to their sea legs rather quickly, particularly if manoeuvring to and from the kiosk carrying a tray of hot drinks. The return trip on Friday was equally as choppy due to the deteriorating weather conditions, with the captain warning passengers that because of the change of course due to the high winds, the vessel would have to turn sharply on

Its approach to the Portsmouth Ferry Terminal, but he would let us know prior to making the manoeuvre. Passengers were also asked not to venture outside onto the sundeck; as if any sane person would, due to the extreme conditions but to remain seated in the passenger lounges. An experience of Titanic proportion for some. Due to the number of teams entering the tournament increased to thirty-five, eight of the teams found themselves playing a ninety minute match on the Monday evening at 8-30pm.

The times for Tuesday’s match’s ranged from 9-30am to 8-30pm. Wednesday was more reasonable with a 9-30am start, with the last game at 5pm. Similar times followed for the quarter finals and final stages on Thursday. Five of the teams from Worthing Pavilion reached the quarter finals having won their three preliminary matches, Two Pavilion teams progressed to the semi- final. Consequently Mark Strong, John Frew, Leah and Robert Taylor were drawn to play Keith Wadhams, Roger Humphrey, Janet and Colin Johnson in the semi-final. A competitive match ensued in which Mark Strong’s team managed to edge a victory. Two teams from the Kingsbridge club were also drawn to play each other in the other semi-final which meant one team from each club would meet in the final. In the final Mark’s team came up against a stubborn team from Quayside Leisure Centre, Kingsbridge, that put up a good show with some sublime bowling. The Pavilion four however kept

PAVILION POST up the pressure to win the match 11-3 over eleven ends. The impending severe weather forecast prompted a mass exodus of hotel guests throughout Thursday, including some of our party. Pavilion’s Marina Crayston was due to fly to South Africa on the following Sunday, where she will be celebrating th her 80 birthday with family. Marina was presented with a card signed by her fellow tourists, as well as with other teasing gifts on the last evening. Everyone seemed have enjoyed the break. The refurbishment of rooms by Warner made for a very comfortable stay. We have provisionally booked forty rooms at the hotel for the bowls th bonanza on Monday 25 February 2019 where it is hoped that we can place enough teams to make it a treble win number.

Coaching Update MARKING & MEASURING We recently held a marking and measuring course on a ladies’ afternoon and had eight ladies attend the course, namely, Ann Hill, Lesley Kirkland, Sandy Gates, Cathy Dawbarn, Kathy Byrnes, Pamela Childs, Linda Patten and Heather Atkinson. These courses require three rinks and at this time of the year it is very difficult to get the rinks that we need. On this occasion the ladies’ captain Ann Button kindly agreed to give us the necessary rinks to run the course. All the ladies attending really seemed to enjoy the course and received their attendance certificates. We will be running a mixed course at the start of the outdoor season. During the course the question of marking touchers was covered in detail, but it can sometimes cause problems for the marker. The rule is Law 28(i) i.e. A toucher shall be clearly marked with chalk by a member of the player’s team, or the marker in singles (iii) If a bowl is not so marked or not so indicated before the succeeding bowl comes to rest, or in the case of the last bowl of an end, before a period of thirty seconds invoked under Law 44, it ceases to be a toucher. In a singles match the marker has the responsibility of marking the toucher, this should be done as soon as the bowl comes to rest. However if the player delivering that bowl has walked off the mat and the opposing player is preparing to bowl then the marker must wait until the next bowl is progressing down the rink before marking the toucher. This still conforms to Law 28

2

PAVILION POST above and allows the game to progress quickly. At all times the marker for a singles match should contribute to the game and be as unobtrusive as possible, try to anticipate the question that the players may want to ask, so that you are able to answer quickly and allow the game to proceed. For example if the player’s last bowl is a metre short you do not have to go into the head to check, it is obvious from a position behind the head. Remember that the players make the decisions as to who is holding shot and how many shots they are asking for, the marker is there to only make decisions when the players request help. A marker should never take bowls out of the head, this should be done by the players. If you have been asked to measure, never push the bowl you think is shot out, this can only be done by an umpire. If the players are unhappy with the markers measuring, an umpire can be called or a player from another rink can be asked to adjudicate, but they can’t if the bowls have been moved. Marking for a singles game can be really interesting for the marker, providing he or she is paying full attention to the game. There is nothing worse for a player to have to wait to ask the marker a question if they are not fully paying attention to the game. When you are marking, the tactics of the game can really show up and it is possible sometimes for the marker to really learn what shots to play and equally what shots not to play. This is what makes marking interesting and informative. So when the next time you are asked to mark, try to say yes, it could help your own game to improve.

Club Competitions Rules, Score-Cards and Etiquette The winter season has posed an interesting time for us who enter the data on the system and we appeal to everyone to be careful in what they enter on the score- cards. The majority of cards are reasonably correct but we do have to decipher some in order to find the correct results and some cards are difficult which uses up our time i.e. i. No cards at all and/or Competition. ii. No names at all or “Them & Us” “Tom, Dick & Harry” No team names or numbers. iii. Results disagree if two cards are submitted (failure to submit two cards is open to incorrect results input by us) because of incorrect information on the one card submitted. iv. Wrong title for the competition or league being played v. Scores and result totals do not agree. NOTE:- In singles matches the challenger is always entered on the left-hand side of the score-card. In pairs and larger matches, two cards are submitted with each team entering their own information on the left-hand side of their card. (this identifies which team filled in the card !!) Also for the benefit of the newer members and talking to some of the older members competition rule 5 is clarified as shown below i.e. The first drawn player(s) (TOPMOST ON SCHEDULE) will be the challenger(s) who must offer their opponents(s) THREE dates to play their match, one of which must be a Saturday or Sunday. These dates must be offered for: i. The First Round – within ten days of the publication of the competition draw. ii. Subsequent Rounds – within seven days of the published completion date of the previous round. The opponents must accept one of the dates offered or mutually agree a date with the challenger(s) or concede the match. If dates are not offered by the challenger(s) within the specified periods and subsequently a mutual date has not been agreed, the tie will be Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

awarded to the opponent(s) provided a card has been submitted to the Competition Secretary within seven days of the closing date of the round or the Competition Secretary has been advised by either competitor (challenger or opponent) of any difficulties incurred in arranging the match. Any variations to this procedure e.g. holidays shown on the holiday list or book, sickness etc. must be agreed with the Competition Secretary SUMMER COMPETITION FORMS WILL BE OUT SHORTLY. GET THEM IN AND WE CAN CREATE THE SCHEDULES. THE EARLIER THE BETTER PLEASE Lastly we extend our thanks to John Westlake for his unerring input of the results on the results sheets. This saves everyone having to wait to see who they should be playing next as early as possible. Without John’s efforts we probably would not hit the end dates to enable the finals to go ahead.

PAVILION POST OUTDOOR COUNTY GAMES With the outdoor season fast approaching, it is time to consider applying to play for the Outdoor County in its range of matches. The first thing to do is to register your interest with the county by filling in a county application form. This can be downloaded from their website www.sussexcb.co.uk in the Men’s pages under county player application form. Then consider joining the vice patrons. It is only £2 and can be paid with the summer competition entries. It will allow you to be considered for selection for about twenty vice patrons matches through the summer. (Please note that we are in Division 4). Get the chance to play around West Sussex by joining the vice patrons.

False claims of Telephone Preference Service: Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, falsely stating that they are calling from one of the well-known UK telecommunication service providers. They call victims claiming to provide a ‘Telephone Preference Service’ - an enhanced call-barring service, which includes barring international call centres. The fraudsters ask victims to confirm/provide their bank account details, informing them that there is a one-off charge for the service. Victims instead see monthly debits deducted from their accounts, which they have not authorised. The fraudsters often target elderly victims. In all instances, direct debits are set up without following proper procedure. The victim is not sent written confirmation of the direct debit instruction, which is supposed to be sent within three days. On occasions when victims attempted to call back, the telephone number provided by the fraudster was either unable to be reached or the victim’s direct debit cancellation request was refused. During 2017, there were fourhundred and ninety-three Action Fraud Reports relating to this fraud. Protect yourself:

PAVILION POST 70th Anniversary With the celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the club drawing nearer a potted history of the club has been included below:The site was originally tennis courts owned by H.P Brazier.

Early days – Tennis Courts

In 1947 the courts were converted into ‘ Cumberland Turf’ greens. These were st open for play on the 1 May 1948 but the first official match was on the th 4 May 1949 when a team from six associations played a match. The club originally named Worthing Sports Ground Bowling Club Ltd got off to a flying start and was widely recognised both for its playing strength and facilities which are still the finest in the county. However, in 1950 and due to a lack of members and dissension amongst the rank and file the club was put into liquidation. This then lead to the formation of Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club with Percy Brazier as president. The club continued to thrive in no small way due to the support of Percy and then after his death in 1954 from Mrs Brazier and the family. The number of members continued to increase from the original fifty-four to one hundred and sixty-six playing members by 1960 and has now over three hundred playing members, plus social members. In 1960 the club became a limited company and supported by the members, purchased the freehold of the property. In 1962 the club decided to provide a three rink indoor green on its property at a cost of approximately £14,000 and at the same time agreed that ladies be permitted to form a section. They were to have use of the Indoor rinks for two sessions a week with a further mixed play session on Sundays. It was not until 1968 when ladies could play outdoors and this was only open to wives of full male members the ladies outdoor season commenced on th 4 May 1969.with fourteen members using one rink. In 1976 the indoor and outdoor sections amalgamated and this

then allowed ladies to join the club without their husbands being a member. In 1988 with membership approaching four hundred it was decided to form a touring club an idea which had been turned down in 1970. The first tour was to Bournemouth and sixty-one members had a very successful time. The touring club has since continued with two tours a year for outdoor and indoor season. It was decided at 1995 Annual General Meeting that the land owned by the club to the west end of A green should be used to build a new three rink indoor extension. Plans were submitted to the Town Hall for approval. There were many outside objectors to the plans, but they were approved by a majority of one. Work started in March 1997 and along with other improvements made within the club work, this was completed and opened by the Mayor of Worthing Councillor Geraldine Lissenberg on the th 18 September 1997.

setbacks with the disastrous fire in May 1996 which destroyed the club house and badly damaged the indoor rinks. The fire had been so intense that when

The club obtained a National Lottery grant to help with cost of the new building, but it was on condition a junior section was established. This has continued to flourish and has produced many successful players with some going on to represent the club in county and national competitions and qualifying for county and national trials. At the same time ladies were permitted to cross the red line in the bar and to buy drinks. In 2007 the then snooker room had a major refurbishment to become the restaurant annexe that exists today. Our two outdoor greens are some of the best in the county with clubs from all over the county and country coming to play. We have hosted and continue to host county championships. This would not have been possible without the expert knowledge and work of Vince Ruttledge who has been our Greenkeeper for the last forty years and hopefully many more. Along the way there have been some

from the adjoining football club to use their changing rooms and kitchen the club fixture list was not interrupted. A new club house was opened in 1967. The fire had been started deliberately, and police later arrested and charged a man. In 1996 another attempt was made to burn down the clubhouse, but smoke and flames were spotted by a neighbour and the fire brigade called. No serious damage was caused, but the culprits were never caught. Throughout its existence the club has enjoyed success in many forms of the game with national and county champions and continues to do so to this day. The club has regularly played in many county leagues with a mixture of results both in and outdoors and is currently in the top division of both ladies and gents.

the safe was found and opened the coins inside were reduced to a molten mass. The club flag was found amongst the embers and although damaged was repaired and flew triumphantly the next day. The outside greens were not damaged and with the offers of help

PAVILION POST Secretary’s Report

At the recent Board of Directors meeting, the following items were discussed:

      

2018-9 Annual subscriptions Members’ subscription packs Ongoing repair schedule for the club New legislation regarding data Social activities Membership of the Board and Officers of the club 2018/9 th 70 Anniversary celebration events

Annual Subscription Packs Please note that the documents regarding the subscriptions of 2018/9 are being uploaded for members at this point. Members who have not informed the Office of their e mail address will find envelopes in the club lounge. Spare copies of the packs and documents will be available in the lounge.

Notes on the Remittance Form Your attention is drawn to two points concerning the remittance form:  

If you only intend to play indoors throughout the year please ensure that you complete the form by using the Indoor only box. This will save the club unnecessary outdoor affiliation fees In order to comply with the new regulations concerning data, usage, publication and retention, we MUST obtain your permission to publish your name and telephone details within the club in the contact book. It is essential that the remittance form is signed on the reverse of the sheet so that we can address our legal responsibilities. We also pass on your names to the County and National Associations for affiliation purposes. All personal details (addresses, e mail details etc. are retained securely in the Secretaries’ Office. The Club does not pass on details to other agencies or organisations.

Social Activities within the Club The club needs support from an active Social side of the club. This generates much needed income as well as providing welcome opportunities for members to meet and enjoy themselves in a non -bowling setting. Uptake recently has been disappointing, resulting in a number of proposed activities being cancelled. Activities have been reviewed for the forthcoming months and it is proposed that a limited number of events this year be offered and these will be actively promoted. The Social Committee urgently needs your support and would welcome your views, ideas, offers on what is being proposed and on what could figure, in the future. PAVILION POST

Advance Notice The term of office of a number of current Directors expires in September of this year. I have been made aware that, of the four positions due for renewal, three of these directors will not be seeking re-election. You will also be aware that there is currently a vacancy on the board following the resignation of Mr. Geoff Pratt. I must also inform you that I will not be seeking re-election for the post of Club Secretary for the forthcoming year. The club cannot and will not survive from October unless existing members come forward to stand as directors or officers of the club. I have asked for the space in the Pavilion Post to air these points so that it will give everyone ample time to consider the current situation and your possible response before the AGM in September. I would be more than happy to discuss with anyone (no obligation) the implications of taking on roles within the club and can only stress the urgent need for people to come forward but also to underline the sense of satisfaction that can (mostly!!) be gained from taking on another role within the club.

Open Weekend th

The club will be holding an open weekend (14 / 15 April). We must constantly strive to increase our membership. Please take one (or more!!) of our new introductory flyers and invite your neighbours, friends, family etc. to join us. A list will be available for members to sign up their availability on the days concerned. It only needs each one of our members to get someone to come along and see what a great place this is!!! Incidentally, as a result of the recent Hobbies Fair organised by the Rotary Club, where we manned a publicity stall we have recruited three new associate members, two more are in the pipeline and a taster session has been organised for the Rotary Club to come and see what is on offer. This was the direct result of the efforts of Graham and Linda Farley, Julie and Malcolm. On your behalf I thank them sincerely.

Late Contributions Social Director’s Report

Too many in-house activities are being cancelled due to very poor support. Your social committee are working tirelessly arranging events hoping to see more of you in attendance. The club needs you, the bar needs you and we need you. Did you know that in recent years your social committee have purchased for the club, two flying birds to distract the birds away from the outside rinks, the coffee machine now adjacent to the bar and a new barbeque to enable the kitchen to offer such delights. The above achieved with you help over recent years. Please continue to add you names to our offerings and we will continue to make your club a better place for you all. We will continue to try to make the impossible possible.
