THE NEWSLETTER OF WORTHING PAVILION BOWLING CLUB
OCTOBER 2018
British Summer –Time ends Sunday 28th October 2018 as clocks go back 1 hr at 2am before retiring and moving down to Rustington. Both Ted and Pat were keen sports people, both being keen rugby union fans. Ted had apparently played rugby regularly himself in his younger days. He could be relied upon to give a good yarn. I recall him recounting his club playing a practice match against the New Zealand ‘All Blacks’ prior to them embarking on a test series in the UK. Ted was up against the formidable Sir Colin Meads aka Pinetree the famous ‘All Blacks’ lock forward and was in line to tackle Meads who was carrying the ball and heading towards the try line at a pace and although Ted made contact with him he was just scooped up by Pinetree who only carried Ted and the ball half the length of the pitch and across the try line. What a picture that would have made.

The Wrong Bias Certificate awarded to Ted
Edward (Ted) Cripps 1941-2018 th
On the afternoon of Monday 15 October 2018 family and friends gathered at Worthing Crematorium to celebrate the life of former Club Captain Edward (Ted) Cripps who passed away suddenly at Worthing Hospital in the early hours of Thursday th 20 September 2018 after a relatively short period of illness. Ted had battled with leukaemia for several years and he seemed to be in remission. However he was taken ill th again on Tuesday 11 September and re-admitted to Worthing Hospital where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Ted was born in Newbury, Berkshire on12th March 1941 and spent most of his working life in the building trade. He and his wife Pat eloped and were married at Gretna Green on 23 April 2005. Employment saw them both travelling to various locations around the country ending up at Wootton Bassett,

The Inimitable and unforgettable Ted Cripps
Ted and Pat joined Pavilion in 2011 and soon became popular members of the club as well as being competent and competitive bowlers. They were also members of the touring club and enjoyed the spring tours to Warner at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight and the summer tours to the West Country. Ted and Pat contributed a great deal towards the club. Ted served as club

captain; ably supported by Pat, between 2013 and 2016, no mean feat. His chosen charity was the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance for which he raised a total of £1575 over the three year period of his captaincy. He also introduced the coveted ‘Wrong Bias Certificate’ that attracted a pound fine and which nobody could escape visitors included, both home and away. This always provided a source of entertainment if not little embarrassment for the recipients. Ted himself was unable to escape being awarded one of his own certificates albeit enlarged to A3 format after a rare wrong bias transgression. A copy of the certificate can be seen above. Ted was also instrumental in building the three shelters adjacent to B Green during late summer 2015 assisted by a few club members and Pat, apparently mixing the mortar. Without doubt, Ted was one in million who will be sadly missed at Pavilion. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Pat and to Nigel and Gary, his sons from his previous marriage.

On Sunday 9 of September Worthing Pavilion Bowling Club’s James Brennan won the County under 18’s Singles Championship. He beat an old rival Ajay Morphett 18 to 15. This the second year that James has been the County’s under 18’s Champion Also at the same championship another WPBC junior under 18’s Treana Smith marginally lost her plate finals match against Keira Dunk by. 15-14.
On the 13 September thirty-eight club members took part in a Shuffleboard game and enjoyed a fun evening with teams of three playing a total of seven games. A fish and chip supper prepared and served by our caterers Highdown Catering went down very well with mushy peas adding to the meal. They did very well in the light of problems with the fryers. The evening was won by Denis Dixon and his team with a prize of cash and a bonus prize of a cream tea each donated by our caterers. Runners up were Bennie and Pam Bennett and John Dunn again with cash prizes. Our thanks to Brighton Shuffleboard Company and also Donna and her crew in the kitchen.
