Coaching News July has been a busy month for the th coaches. On the 4 July we had a visit from twenty people from Worthing Rotary Club. They had a quick teach-in on the basic of bowls, they then had a break for coffee and after the break we played a game of bowls, this proved to be a very competitive affair with the ladies giving the men a real tussle. Everybody seemed to enjoy the morning and after the game they retired to the restaurant for an excellent buffet supplied by Yvonne and Dave. The Rotary have been very influential with regard to bowls in the Worthing area having run the Visually Impaired

Triples Tournament in conjunction with Pavilion, donating trophies for the winners. This ran for many years but had to be abandoned due to lack of support from the clubs for the blind, this was a real shame but the Rotary were very generous to have run the event for so many years. th The next event was on the 10 July when we had a visit from the Broadwater Baptist Church seventeen men attended this evening event and this also proved to be very competitive. Once again we had a quick teach-in on the basics of bowls and then proceeded to have a game of rinks. We are constantly surprised how quickly some people pick up the game when they have never played bowls before, perhaps it is the coaching! But some of the heads were really good, they also had asked for the club to supply a buffet and once again Yvonne and Dave came up trumps. This proved to be very successful evening as they all stayed at the club after the buffet to watch a World Cup game and of course made good use of the bar which helped the club’s income. On a less encouraging note we have to report a very poor attitude displayed by an existing club member to some of the new bowlers we have trained. When he saw three names that he did not recognise in the roll-up book, he decided that he did not want to play with new bowlers and refused to play with them. We would remind all members that they were all ‘new’ bowlers once and we would encourage all members to welcome our newly trained bowlers with open arms. We train them as far as we can, but they all still need help and encouragement from their fellow club members to gain that vital experience we all need. It is also worth mentioning that their membership to our club helps us maintain the club for future years and keeps our membership fees stable. However, we were reliably informed by an observer that the heads bowled by the newcomers compared very favourably with the heads played on the

next rink, by the member who refused to play with them, we wonder why? We are very glad to point out that this is a very, very unusual occurrence and all the new bowlers are really welcomed to our club and made to feel part of the Pavilion family. Members of the coaching staff

Secretary’s Note Advance notice of AGM Rotarians enjoy their Buffet

This particularly applies to the Spoon Drivers who have been amazing in welcoming the new bowlers to their ranks and they really make the transition to be a ‘Pavilion Player’ really good fun and rewarding. Another plus for us as coaches is the system employed by the ladies, they have a mentor system. Each new lady member is given a mentor to guide them for the first few months of joining. This makes a real difference to a new member joining the club and ensures their inclusion in to the Ladies section runs smoothly. A special thank you to all members who welcome the new bowlers we have trained, this makes them feel accepted, we know this makes a big difference to them.

TOURING CLUB There will be a meeting held in the lounge at Pavilion on Wednesday 22 August at 7pm to finalise the arrangements for the forthcoming tour to Eastbourne.

Dave Hilton

Please note that the AGM will be held th on Thursday 27 September 2018 at 7pm in the club lounge. Details, invitations to submit motions and nomination forms will be available shortly.

Emergency First Aid Boxes I am looking for a volunteer to check on a monthly basis the stock and contents of the emergency first aid boxes. Full contents checklist is available and just needs someone to regularly update the office of the need for renewal or replacement of certain items. Please see me if you can possibly take on this small but really important role.

Directors' Meeting. The Directors finalised their discussions regarding a replacement for caterers following the termination of the contract by Temptations. An announcement will be made very shortly.

Appointment of Directors.

The Way Forward Initial plans have been proposed to the directors for refurbishment of the lounge and dining room. Details will be available prior to the AGM where a decision will be taken on the proposal to carry out these or other work and the means by which such improvements are to be funded

Spectators' corridor overlooking the green. I am pleased to report that, after a long period of searching we have managed to identify a way of cleaning and hopefully maintaining the roof to the corridor linking the main building to the new rinks. Work will be starting shortly.

Water Update Many of you will be aware that the Secretary has been involved in extremely long drawn out arguments with Southern Water and Business Streams over the past 18 months. I am pleased to report that this marathon appears to be nearing a conclusion. Further details when the final resolution is made absolutely definite.

Peter Woods Hon Secretary

Please remember that there is a need to appoint new directors at the forthcoming AGM. Nomination forms will be available from the end of this week regarding the vacancies. Also, if there are any motions that are to be considered by the AGM, they should be put in writing and submitted to the secretary in the next few weeks.

LADIES’ Dear Ladies I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful summer. I’m loving the sunshine but my mind has also had to look forward and I just wanted to remind you all of the

PAVILION POST need for a Vice Captain to take office at the end of September. As I have said before, we need people to come forward for this office (and others to be elected in September) so that we can flourish and continue to fulfil match, competition and roll up commitments next season and the following year. One or two ladies cannot run it all. We did mention that if someone feels able to take on this role for the winter season only, that would be helpful, but only if she will also take on the mantle of captaincy the following winter. A committee will be there to support both Captain and Vice so no one is going to be on their own. I really hope someone will be brave enough to step forward and come and have a chat with myself or Ann. In the past it has always been understood that you had to have been a member for two years before taking office but if any newer members feel they know enough about the ins and outs of the club to want to have a go please contact me.

very big thank you to them all. Members came up trumps once again with the raffle prizes, this was supported brilliantly by all attendees, which in turn helped to make a profit of ÂŁ230. This much appreciated sum kept the whole evening in the black. Thank you so very much.

Celebratory Evening and Barbeque One hundred and fifteen members attended this very enjoyable evening on nd Friday 22 June, organised by your social committee. Perfect weather greeted us, an excellent band entertained us and a great barbecue satisfied us. Taylormade, the seven piece band, played and sang with great professionalism that had everyone joining in.

The Party in full swing

Another big thank you, deservingly so to the bar staff who worked tirelessly throughout the entire evening and beyond. With members’ thirsts and their smiles, this combination resulted in a fantastic bar takings. Such was the positive feedback regarding the band, they have been reth booked for our benefit on Friday 7 December 2018. This will be an all ticket evening with a definite limit, so please read all the notice boards. Further details re the time, food etc to be considered in due course. My best wishes and thanks to you all for your continuing support.
