many years and also organised football tournaments for the electricity board. Ron moved to Sussex in 1968 and married Val in 1972. As he neared retirement as a personnel officer with the electricity board, Ron and Val moved to Ferring in 1980. An active member of Ferring Football Club, Ron was involved in fundraising for a pavilion, spending a period of time on the committee. He also coached football and cricket at Ferring School until a knee injury prevented him from continuing. Ron enjoyed his garden, dancing, holidays, especially caravanning in England and further afield in Europe. He also visited the USA, Thailand, river cruises to Russia and Budapest as well as ocean cruises. He was a longstanding member of Pavilion and a familiar face at the spoondrives. He also organised the Matinee Triples for many years. Ron’s failing health saw him leave the club nigh on two years ago. Our thoughts are with Val and family.

1921-2015 Members of Worthing Pavilion joined family and friends at St Andrews Church th Ferring on Wednesday 6 January 2016 for the funeral of past club member Ron Relton who died at Worthing Hospital on th 18 December 2015 after a short period of illness. th Ron was born in Hertfordshire on 19 October 1921 and after leaving school found work in the offices of the Eastern Electricity Board. In August 1941 he was conscripted into the Royal Navy where he saw service as a wireless telegraphist aboard HMS Totland, an American Coastguard cutter. Ron was demobbed from the navy in March 1946 and went back to work with the electricity board. He married and had a son Jonathan, a daughter Judy and later a granddaughter Natalie. Notes from the Chair Just to update members about our recent discussions! We have decided that, this year, there will be no increase in the membership fees due in May. They will remain as last year. This decision, though welcome in many ways, challenges us all. We need more members in the club in order to continue to develop and flourish, so it is necessary that everyone encourages new membership. To this end we would like to set up an ‘introduce a friend’ incentive whereby if you introduce a new member to the club and they join for a year, then you will be offered reduction of £40 on next year’s subscription. Please encourage your friends and family to come along, visit the club, see Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
what is available, try a coaching session or join as a social member. Many of you will be aware of the difficulty we have had with the supplier of our club shirts and the fact we have been unable to get new stock for some time. We have now sourced a new supplier and the Board has taken this opportunity to update our look! A new, colourful club shirt, manufactured in England will be available shortly from the secretary. These together with our new stickers; available from the bar or Temptations at the same price as before, are intended to project that we are a forward thinking and, progressive club. A revision and review of the club’s byelaws has also taken place and the updated version is now available to view in the clubhouse also online. Most changes have simply brought the paperwork in line with current practice. The complicated regulations on dress codes have been simplified to an easy reference chart. A copy is included in the appendix of this newsletter. As you will be aware there have been continuous problems with the heating system. I am pleased to say that the manufacturer has visited the club and rectified the problems. Hopefully the situation will improve. The Board has agreed to our coaches using our club for coaching coaches, this will bring in revenue to the club and also should enhance the reputation of the club. Do you know anyone who may be prepared to sponsor the club? There are many opportunities for advertising around our site. Finally, the Board wishes to thank all the members who have assisted in so many ways around the club recently as we continue to try to improve and develop the club. We hope many more suggestions and volunteers will come forward, in the near future.

Match Report Three of the Pavilion Ladies’ namely Julie Woods, Marina Crayston and Esme Clough have progressed through to the quarter finals of the Ladies’ County Patrons’ Triples Competition, winning their match against a trio from Denton Island 20 – 8.
Spoondrive Congratulations to Frank Howard who won the coveted award of being the Spoondriver of the year 2015, closely followed by Ian Smith and Peter Woods. The award is calculated from the accumulative scores of each team a spoondriver plays throughout the year.
Could members please be sensible when booking rinks for competitions etc., Booking a session say from 12pm for a pairs competition when there is a club match or a scheduled session booked from two o'clock is being somewhat short sighted, as the pairs competition with the best will in the world cannot be completed in two hours of play.

This is response to a number of members who have requested clearer information regarding what is on at the club and when. This overview gives a summary of the week's usual allocation of rinks. It is only a guide and must be read in conjunction with the green ranger's published details for the appropriate week. Remember, particularly that matches might be played away and therefore there may be availability for roll-up time so referral to the green ranger board is essential.

Internal Club Competitions Conditions of Play
Arranging Matches
a. The first round – within ten days of the publication of the competition draw b. Subsequent rounds – within seven days of the published completion date of the previous round. The opponents must accept one of the dates offered or mutually agree a date with the challenger(s) or concede the match. If dates are not offered by the challenger(s) within the specified periods and subsequently a mutual date has not been agreed, the tie will be awarded to the opponent(s) provided a card has been submitted to the competition secretary within seven days of the closing date of the round or the competition secretary has been advised by either competitor (challenger or opponent) of any difficulties incurred in arranging the match.
I recently overheard a couple of club members involved in a heated discussion about arranging matches for internal competitions, that prompted me to remind players of their obligations i.e. Rule 5 states: The first drawn player(s) will be the challenger(s) who must offer the opponent(s) THREE dates, one of which must be a Saturday or Sunday. These dates must be offered for:

Over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend th nd 30 April – 2 May, there will hopefully be an Outdoor Pairs Tournament, open solely to club members (Summer and Winter) (Men, Ladies or Mixed)) The entry fee will probably be £20.00 which will include a kitchen voucher for £2.50 per person. Prize money will be based on a minimum of twenty-four pairs. Winners will receive £150.00, losing finalists £100.00, third place £70.00, fourth place £40.00. If we could reach thirty-six entries then this would be great and the prize money would increase accordingly. Based on twenty-four entries play would be on the Saturday, with the finals on the Sunday. If we reach thirty-six entries, then play would be on Saturday for some and Sunday for others, with the finals being held on the Monday. The tournament would be on a round robin basis, with a minimum of five games on each day, matches being of six ends in duration. Conditions of Play
No visiting the head No trial ends, but only one shot on the first end Handicaps will be taken into account and the shot difference calculated on one third of joint 2

handicap with a maximum allowance of three shots Remaining five ends will be normal play but still no visiting the head Top teams in each league qualify for finals and depending on number of entries, so some second teams will also qualify based on shot difference
The main objective behind this competition is to provide extra income for the kitchen and bar, that otherwise would have been lost as a result of the demise of Planetbowls. Therefore please reserve these dates on your calendar and join in. Full details will be posted on the notice board from March onwards allowing you to enter your pairs, so please start organising your pairs of any combination for this event. If you are a single then we might be able to organise a pair, so if you are having this problem leave a note in my pigeon hole and I will do my best to accommodate you. If successful we could make this an annual event and I may be able to persuade Ian Hart to provide a suitable Trophy.
Warwick Davis Ladies’ Section Happy New Year to everyone. In January the Ladies had this season's first league win against Worthing where we picked up ten out of the eleven points and winning four rinks. Well th done to everyone who played. As of 5 January we have moved up the league table to fifth, so are no longer the strongest team in the league. Our December mince pie drive was well attended and all the ladies enjoyed the fun games. Thank you to Ann and Julie for organising this for me. Our county teams have progressed to the next rounds. The Pairs team of Marina Crayson and Esme Clough won against Eastbourne 20-7. The County Patrons Fours of Julie Woods, Joan Barrass, Marina Crayston and Esme Clough won against Grattons 26-10. Congratulations to all the ladies who have won top rink in recent matches Ann Button, Pat Cripps, Jean Garwood, Marlene Hancock, Margaret Marriott, Gene Mears, Jacky Pearson and Lois Wallis.

Coaching Update The coaching team had a very successful year with lots of work being undertaken, mainly on new members and on members who have joined the club without any official training. We are working closely with the new secretary to ensure that new members who have not completed a coaching course and are fairly new bowlers will be put in contact with the coaches to help where necessary. This year twenty new members have joined after going through the coaching course. We are currently training two new coaches Jacky Pearson (our first lady coach) and Keith Bowden. They are in the early stages of their course, but they are showing great promise and we think they will be a good addition to the team. We will be losing one of our coaches Terry Urben during the summer. We would like to thank him for his commitment and work over the last three years to the coaching section. He will be returning as an indoor member and coach, so we are not losing him completely. We do need to keep the number of coaches up to a level for the busy times. Gordon Kibbles is now the EBCS Zone coach for our area. This has meant we have been asked to train new coaches for other clubs in the area. We have now received the full approval from the Board of Directors to carry out this training. This may seem counter-productive to help other local clubs, but many of them do not have any coaches at all and would be in danger of closing, thereby losing Pavilion the chance to play them in future fixtures. We will be making a charge for the use of the club’s facilities and equipment which will bring in revenue to the club. (We coaches do not receive any payment for this.) The coaching will be carried out indoors during the summer months when rink availability isn’t a problem. Gordon also organised a fun skills rd afternoon on Sunday 3 January for the club, which included bowling off line, controlled weight, draw shots, over weight shots and draw to a single target, to help members improve their game, that proved to be great success. Thanks to Gordon for spending so much time organising the event. Gordon would like to thank all the members who took part and hopes that they all enjoyed the afternoon and the challenges. In May we are organising the Visually Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC
Impaired Triples Tournament for Worthing Rotary and for the first time ever we have entered a team from Worthing Pavilion with Jim Carter leading it. We have five teams entered at the moment and are hoping for one or two more teams.

Junior Section E.Y.B.D Skills Day The pressure was on juniors’. coach Trevor Parker and his back room staff of Clyde Fordyce and Peter Tomley to deliver yet another good performance from their squad. The squad were drilled in all the skills required prior to attending Horsham IBC for the E.Y.B.D. Skills Day and the coaching staff were confident that they had done enough to make their players strong enough to push for the top spot. The squad consisted of Dominic Camisa, Josh Tomley, and two new members, namely Treana Smith and Thomas Payne making their debut. The squad performed well throughout the day and ended with the following scores and positions: th
Treana 52pts

Playing the Last Bowl
Club Website
An interesting scenario was apparently played out at Pavilion recently. Having the last bowl of an end to play, a skip asked his third what the situation was at the head? whereupon the third said they were holding shot. His skip then said ‘We’ll take it’ and did not deliver his last bowl. The opposing third had conceded the shot, when an opposite number of his indicated another of their bowls that he thought might be in the count and suggested a measure. There was some disagreement between the two thirds as to whether there should be a measure, as the count had been declared? A compromise was met and a measure was carried out, that proved the bowl was not in the count. Digging deeper into the interpretation of the law on this issue met with conflicting opinions from various quarters, but the following umpires’ argument seems to fit the bill i.e. ‘The bit in bold to me decides the issue he has declared he will take the shot and not ‘Take the one and measure the rest’. ‘Simpler and safer just to say, ‘I am not playing my last bowl’ and leave it up to the thirds to agree/measure the shots’.
It is possible that members may have experienced some difficulty navigating the pages of the club website when using an IPad. Since the latest IOS update, you now need to click and accept the ‘cookies’ icon at the bottom of the page to access the drop down sub-menu’s.
Sussex Police have posted an antiscam booklet on-line that can be accessed via the following link:
Law 47 (i) Nothing in these laws shall be deemed to make it necessary for the last player to play the last bowl in any end, but (ii) the last player shall declare to the opposing skip, or opponent in singles the intention to refrain from playing it before the commencement of determining the result of the end and (iii) such a declaration shall be irrevocable. WIBC Laws of the Sport of Indoor Bowls
Law 47{ii) clearly indicates that the last player shall declare to the opposing skip, or opponent in singles his intention to refrain from playing the last bowl of an end before the commencement of determining the result of the end. So at the end of the day the outcome of the aforementioned scenario may well have relied upon a play on words.

Apple Devices Perusing the website of the Federation of Small Businesses; of which the club is a member, I came across a question as to whether Apple devices were susceptible to virus attacks. Since a lot more people now use Mac notebooks, IPads etc., there has been a growth of viruses targeting Apple products, so it is advisable to use a suitable anti-virus package. Further information can be obtained from our sponsor Trevor of Pier to Peer whose details can be seen on the panels in the lounge/ bar area.

Touring Club A gentle reminder that the AGM of the Touring Club will be held in the lounge rd at Pavilion on Wednesday 3 February 2016 for a 7.30pm start. Please make an extra effort to attend the meeting at which I shall be handling out the ferry passes for the Bembridge trip and if you have not already paid, Don will be looking to relieve you of your hard earned money for the outstanding balance for this tour. During the meeting we shall also be discussing likely venues to tour in 2017.

The Social Committee would like to thank everyone for making the evening such an enjoyable success. The one mistake of the evening was made by one of our number who, after backing horse No6 all evening with no success, backed horse No1 named ‘Roly Poly Pudding’ (his favourite, and it shows) only to see Horse No6 win the next race !!
