County Singles Final th

On Sunday 13 April 2014 fifteen or so members from Pavilion travelled to Eastbourne & District IBC to support club colleague Bill Murphy who was to play in the final of the county championship singles. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be Bill’s day, as he lost out to M. Heitzman of Falaise IBC., Regardless of the outcome of the match it was no mean feat by Bill to reach his second final in two consecutive years and to take the title last year. Well done to you Bill!

Club Open Weekend

th

So far the open weekend over 12 and th 13 April 2014 seems to have been quite successful, attracting a total of one hundred and twenty-six visitors to Pavilion, albeit it may be days or even some weeks before the full impact is known. However, Saturday saw fifty-seven invitees visit the club, resulting in two new signings; as full playing members, two summer playing members and twenty-four new associate members, all of whom have now signed up and paid for the coaching sessions. Sunday saw a further sixty-nine invitees visit the club with another twenty-five associate members signed up and paid for coaching sessions. There was also one social member who signed up and paid his annual subscription. NB The above figures include two juniors. Several of the visitors also took forms home, so the figures could increase. So far it looks as though the weekend showed a potential success rate of around 43%. i.e. a possibility of fifty-four new club members. The event would not have been possible without the 9950 letter drops; Terry Urben topping the list with over 1000 deliveries; the exhibitions we have completed during February and March and our advertising campaign. A very big thank you to all who took part; on your efforts and a job well done! A special thanks to all the coaches who worked tirelessly under considerable pressure throughout the weekend. A warm welcome to the club is extended to new playing members, Brian Nicholls, John McCormick, Gill Kalinowicz, Adam Kalinowicz, George Moorfield and Viv Moorfield. We hope you all have many years of enjoyable bowling at Pavilion as well as making new friends along the way. We also wish our new associate members every success in their coaching.

Malcolm Gilbey Newsletter of Worthing Pavilion BC

NB: Of course the event would have never got off the ground without the cumulative hours put in by Malcolm Gilbey, meticulous planning, advertising, burning the midnight oil and otherwise promoting the club. Congratulations Malcolm on a successful week-end.

Open Weekend - Coaching Phew, what a magnificent turnout; when we arrived on Saturday morning there was a queue already waiting to start their trial coaching session, so we promptly set up the rinks and started without further ado. It was absolutely non-stop, on Saturday we had fifty-seven people and on the Sunday we had sixty-nine people and as at today’s date we have fifty-two new members to coach. I would like to say a big thank you to all the coaches who worked non-stop throughout the weekend. Although the open day was supposed to end at 2.30pm we left the premises at 4.15pm on both days. I think we can call the weekend a tremendous success. Malcolm Gilbey worked tirelessly on the way up to the open days and his work showed an unbelievable response. The club members who showed all the prospective new members around the club were superb and the success of the weekend lies firmly in their hands. It was an extremely rewarding way to spend the time, so many people with smiles on their faces and really enjoying themselves. The coaches will all try very hard to convert as many as possible to full membership of the club. We will contact all those on the waiting list to have lessons to make sure they do not lose interest. Would all members; if they know anyone on the list, reassure them we will get to them as quickly as possible. It may be worth pointing out that when new members pay their £25 for coaching, we do not receive anything from that fee for the coaching team. All this money goes into the club’s general funds. Some members think we receive a fee, however, I must emphasise that the coaches carry out their coaching duties on a purely voluntary basis and do not

PAVILION POST receive any expenses for time or travel. They carry out these duties for the good of the club and to try to improve the standard of club bowling for beginners. We hope they will all have a future successful bowling career at Pavilion. Any member who requests help with a problem delivery, or any other type of problem, we will always do our best to help them. We have carried out many video clinics and we have purchased IPads for the benefit of members. This is very good for anyone to have, as when you see yourself bowling it is quite an eye opener. We were delighted to see that there were nine club members, who have passed through the club coaching scheme and who reached club finals day. The coaches would like to thank Gordon Kibbles for his generosity in purchasing the new game Snooker Bowls and a considerable number of sets of bowls of different sizes for coaching. When new members finish their coaching it is ideal for them to try out the latest bowls available, before purchasing a new set of bowls. Without Gordon’s generosity the coaching section would not be as efficient or effective. We need the correct bowls and equipment to try to obtain the high standard the coaches strive to achieve in coaching beginners and helping members, the club simply does not have the funds to do this.

PAVILION POST Match Reports

New Fixture Venues

Green Etiquettes

Pavilion v Henfield BC Henfield Bowls Club resurrected an old fixture with WPBC on Wednesday 26th March and was given a bowling lesson losing on all five rinks with match total of 169 to 62 points. However old friendships were re-awakened and some new ones forged. As Pavilion Captain, I reminded everyone that a ‘wrong bias’ bowled would earn a certificate which would cost the individual £1 with all the proceeds to go to the Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. In a magnanimous gesture all twenty Henfield players bowled a wrong bias with their first bowl and donated £20 to the charity. Top Rink players for WPBC were:Sharon Pratt Geof Pratt Jim Braiden Tom Bates (Skip)

Edward Cripps

You will probably note that this year’s fixture card seems to have a lot more matches than 2013 thanks to the hard work of Fixture Secretary Alan Sweetman-Hicks, who should be commended for his efforts. Alan has arranged quite a few more new venues for us to visit, coupled with several touring clubs that will be coming to Pavilion.

 Southwater BC rd

Pavilion v Sutton BC Pavilion played the penultimate match of the season on Saturday 29th March 2014 versus a very strong team from Sutton Bowls Club and were soundly beaten by 96-130 losing on four rinks and winning on two. Top WPBC rink comprised:-

Our first new fixture is on Saturday 3 May 2014 when Pavilion will be visiting Southwater Bowling Club. Southwater is a relatively small club that was founded in 1990 and comprising of some seventy playing members The club is situated behind the Southwater Leisure Centre, in Pevensey Road. Southwater.

First and foremost; DO NOT BOUNCE OR LOB BOWLS…… This may cause irreparable DAMAGE Varying the position of the mat outdoors; particularly during the early part of the season; helps to spread any wear and tear to the grass. Equally it is suggested that shorter jack lengths are also preferable during the first few weeks of the season. Surprisingly, milling around in the 2m area from the ditch whilst waiting your turn to play; similarly at the head, can also cause unnecessary damage. Sitting on the bank of the ditch can cause irreparable damage to the edge of the green; from those idle dangling feet.

For those new to outdoor lawn bowling/ marking, there are 2m measuring sticks that may be used when centring the jack or laying the mat. When using these, the rear of the measuring stick is placed at the edge of the green/ ditch and the front edge of the jack must be level with the front edge of the measuring stick.

The indoor season ended on April 3 and after a series of twenty-two matches the team of Clyde Fordyce emerged as winners for this season. In second place was the team led by David Berry, followed by the team organised by Esme Clough. Congratulations to all participants on a series of well fought and enjoyable matches. The Mixed Triples League for the summer moves to Wednesday. A list has been posted on the notice board in the club lounge for players wishing to participate outdoors. Please sign up – everyone is very welcome.

With the grass still struggling to recover from the appalling wet winter months and somewhat susceptible to being damaged, we can all help with its recovery by following a few basics:-

Then on Thursday 8 May 2014 Pavilion will be venturing north of Pyecombe, for our first time visit to Hurstpierpoint Bowling Club that was founded in 1923 and is located in the centre of the village in South Avenue, off High Street. From reading write-ups on their website this looks as though this could prove to be a keenly fought match. With a heavier fixture list this year, it is all the more important that members support Club Captain Edward Cripps, by making themselves available to represent the club. Any other new fixtures and venues will be highlighted nearer the match dates.

Parking Arrangements Parking in the club car park during the rd th tournament 3 - 5 May 2014 will be restricted to competitors and those persons involved in organising and officiating at the Tournament. It is requested that local officials park in the surrounding streets or share cars or use public transport to relieve pressure on the car park. Please respect those members of the club who have volunteered to direct parking. Spectators very welcome; entry is FREE. The nearest public multi storey car park is Teville Gate, beside Worthing Central Station. The weekend rate is currently £1.50 all day since Worthing Borough took over parking charges. 3

PAVILION POST Also very close to the station is an open car park open twenty-four hours a day. On Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday on street parking is permitted in the parking bays in the Railway Approach; but please double check the notices for any restrictions. The club is about a five minute walk from the station. Out of the Car park pass the station to the level crossing go across the crossing take the first turning on the left. This is Pavilion Road. Pass the first turning on the right then after a few houses look for WPBC entrance drive.

It is planned to install the LED lighting for rinks one to three on the 10th and th 11 June 2014 and rinks four to six on th th the 17 and 18 of June 2014. The work will be carried out between the hours of 6am and 10pm. Please be patient and take extra care when walking around the club, as there will be contractors on site during these two weeks. When not working on the rinks themselves the engineers may be working in other areas of the club.

Tournament Update Glad to say we have nigh on ninety entries and the draw has been made and will be published on the Planetbowls website and will be displayed on the competition notice board. My thanks go to Keith Wadhams and Gerry Shallis for all their work in organising the draw. For those not aware, the players play two sets of seven ends each and if there is a tie an additional three ends tie breaker is played to decide the winner. Each game should last around one and a half hours and the loser then marks the next round. As many of the players have travelled a long way if they lose the first game they will automatically be entered into the Plate Competition and this event will run alongside the main event. Pavilion members are made aware that all competitors will have access to the greens from Friday afternoon for practice sessions and all greens will be in use over the Bank Holiday, the finals being on the Monday afternoon. The car park is being patrolled and made available to competitors only, so will club members please note this and park elsewhere. Malcolm has given some suggestions for alternative parking on page three. I would still welcome volunteers for marking duties, especially on the Saturday morning from 8-30am onwards. The mayor is to open the event, so it would be good as if as many people as possible could be on hand to set up the greens and to welcome competitors. The kitchen and bar will be open all weekend so if you are not participating in any way you are welcome to be a spectator as there will be some top class bowlers appearing. If you cannot make it to the club the event is being streamed live on the

How often do we see a player from one rink scamper across to an adjoining rink and lift a bowl to prevent a bowl delivered from his/ her own rink; on the correct bias; colliding with bowls on the adjacent rink. In this scenario the bowl should be lifted by one of the players at the head that was in danger of being disturbed (if such action would not affect the outcome) The player from another rink who lifted the bowl was a neutral person Law 28.3.4.1, so if the skips cannot then agree to the former position of the bowl it should be a dead end. Definition of neutral person - anyone who is not a player on the rink concerned. De facto. Also Law 36.2(1) states ’A player should not go onto a neighbouring rink where play is in progress’ This does not seem to deter some players from walking onto other rinks for a chat and to pass the time of day whilst waiting their turn to play.

Giving Into Temptations Over the years I have often listened to and benefitted from recommendations regarding places to eat, that represent quality and good value for money in and around the town. Recently, my wife and I came to the club for Sunday lunch. Three courses, with a choice of starter (pate, prawn cocktail, melon etc.), three roasts on offer (lamb, chicken or pork) with a selection of five accompanying vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, and an outstanding range of desserts. The price…………under £24 for the two meals!! I challenge anyone to find better value or quality for the money. Well done Dave and Yvonne!! If you have not tried a Sunday lunch at the club - don’t resist temptations! Give it a try. I doubt you will regret it. Book now!!! A very satisfied member. Name and address provided

Since Diana and I took over the cribbage evening from Dennis Jones in 2008. I have kept a record of various figures over the years that might be of interest:Number of Players: 786 Prize money paid out: £994.91p Money spent over bar for coffees/ teas : £582.10p Before some eagle eyed person spots my figures don’t quite agree:-

786 members @ £2.00 = £1572 Prize money paid out = £994.91p Coffees/ teas = £582.10p Balance = - £5.01p It would appear that we have spent £5.01p more than we received, not too bad over six years, or I cannot add up right?
