THE INDOOR COMPETITION FINALS th th On the weekend of the 11 and 12 of April, at WPBC, were held the Club Indoor Finals . Over these two days 17 finals were played. After months of fierce knockout competition the finals were equally hard fought, most with keen observers on tenterhooks indeed some results were wonderfully close right until the very last bowl of the last end was played. {In the case of the Championship Triples an extra end had to be played and the winners managed 1 point on the last to clinch the win when their opponents were holding 3} Asuperb weekend (Results Page )2 over)

The indoor season has finished on a high with Pavilion winning the County fours Championship at Arun Indoor Bowling Club on the 19th April. The rink of Colin Meeney, Peter Chiffins, John Frew and Mark Strong beating the rink from Preston 25 – 17. However the triple of Andy Clarke, Mark Strong and Peter Chiffins were defeated by Adur in the afternoon but none the less it was a great performance to be represented in 2 County Finals. The County League Team had an eventful March with losses against Arun and Egerton Park but with wins over Worthing, which relegated them to Division 2, and a win at Champions Adur which secured our survival in Division 1. This is the first time we have avoided relegation from Division 1 since the County League started and hopefully will see the end of Pavilion being seen as a "yo-yo club" between the 2 divisions. I would like to thank my Co-Selectors,Arthur White and Barry Whitmore for their valuable assistance throughout the season, all the players who represented the club, sometimes at very short notice, and all those who made themselves available for selection but were not picked for their continued support. Also a special word of thanks for President "Bennie Bennett" for his invaluable support of the team and myself. His attendance at every game as a supporter, and late substitute on one occasion was a real help but especially his assistance in preparing the rinks and collecting the money made my job as Captain of the day considerably easier than it would otherwise have been.

Congratulations to Sue Gubbins, Sharon Pratt & Pat Edmonds who won the County Unbadged Triples competition against a team from King Alfred on 20th April and have been awarded their county badges. Well done ladies! Congratulations also to everyone who reached the Club finals. I believe next season is going to be very exciting for Pavilion Ladies. However, I have to report we lost 78-88 to Adur, in our final league match. Adur's win clinched the league title for them. New member, Mary Stemp gained her top rink badge in this match, along with Carol Artley and Betty Olley. We rounded off our indoor season with a spoon drive followed by a short meeting on 14th April. The key item for discussion concerned a proposal from Grattons regarding a return to 6 rinks of play in the league from October. Members were overwhelmingly in favour of maintaining the 5 rinks which have been played this season. Ley Elliott was able to report the cushions for the verandah benches will arrive in time for the start of the outdoor season. Thank you to all ladies for your support this season and I hope everyone enjoys a great summer (indoors or out).

Venue

Due to lack of support both internally and externally the 4 day Easter Tournament was cancelled. We decided to provide some kind of entertainment for Club Members and hit on the idea of a Fun Drive. Hoping for a full house we achieved 36 keen members for the day then 3 cancellations meant that we had to encourage 3 more players. One of the cancellations was from Tim Baldwin who managed, with great dignity, to fall off a ladder, injuring his back and leg. All the best Tim. (Ladder/Garden OK!) Thanks go to Gordon Kibbles and Terry Pointer both of whom gave up their time and money to think up different and ingenious challenges on each 28 April 2015

rink 12 teams of 3 players used 2 woods to complete the 6 courses and we were assured that everyone enjoyed the different hazards posed. Scoring the most points were the trio of; Wendy Rhodes, David Elliott and Gordon Kibbles who won the top purse of £42. Prizes for 2nd £30, 3rd £24 and 4th £18 were also awarded. If more members had taken part more money would have been available. Thanks to all who took part before and on the day including Dennis Dixon, Howard Gates, Sandy Gates and Pat Cripps. Ted Cripps. 1 Thomas Taylor Redline XTL and Redline Narrowest drawing arc with no hook at the finish. Precision narrow bias. Designed for indoor surfaces and fast outdoor surfaces. 2 Drakes Pride Advantage Narrow drawing arc with no hook at the finish. Recommended primarily for all indoor surfaces and artificial outdoor surfaces. 3 Thomas Taylor Vector VS, Henselite Dreamline and Greenmaster Power Narrow drawing arc with no hook at the finish with a straighter run into the jack than the Classic II, making them the narrowest Henselite bowl. 4 Thomas Taylor Ace Slightly wider drawing arc than the Vector with no hook at the finish. Recommended for all indoor and outdoor surfaces. 5 Henselite ABT-2000 Medium bias bowl holds a tight line to the jack with a hard hook at the end. Recommended for all indoor and outdoor surfaces. 6 Greenmaster Premier Medium bias bowl holds a unique line to the jack with very little hook at the end. Recommended for all indoor and outdoor surfaces. 6 Thomas Taylor International and Drakes Pride Professional Similar to the Taylor Ace but with a stronger finish. Recommended for all indoor and outdoor surfaces. 8 Henselite Tiger II This bowl has a draw line in between the Dreamline, and Classic II, making it an ideal choice for indoor & fast outdoor bowling surfaces. 9 Henselite Classic ll Made to run straighter, and finish with less pronounced hook. The Classic II is ideal for attacking difficult heads, and is recommended for all indoor surfaces.

I thought that you would like a comparative chart of Bowls Lines - I haven’t put in any wrong biases or wobbly deliveries - I leave them up to you.

Editorial Having now taken over from Tony Powell I realise, even more than I did before, what a superb job he has done over the past seven years in setting up ‘Pavilion Post’ and establishing an excellent layout for the whole enterprise. What a great example to follow - and a bit daunting too. I don’t intend to make any radical changes - I would be foolish to. I am using CorelDraw, which is the professional program that I have used for many years, rather than the Microsoft equivalent. So there will inevitably be some slight jiggling around of layout boxes, etc. and I have changed the typeface to Times New Roman as I consider it from experience to be visually one of the best, most flexible and easily readable font around - it allows also for a slightly larger format which is great for those of us who, for many reasons maybe psychologically or through anno domini but won’t admit it, constantly forget or mislay our reading glasses. I have talked to several people about what they would like to see, if anything, added to the ‘Post’ and one or two things came up. It was interesting to hear what people thought about possible ways forward for the club, and the communication of ideas and musings on various topics. The first addition therefore, that most people would like to see, is just what the current membership of the club is, numerically. I think that this is important for all to know, as the numbers bring home the rather parlous financial state that currently exists. Instantaneous quantification is a bit difficult because membership is now in a number of categories including Full all-year, plus Summer only or Winter only, further broken down into Mens, Ladies and Juniors, Life members, Social and finally Associate (those people currently under the coaching scheme - I bet I’ve missed at least one more). So, from now on there will be a strap line, under the club logo on the front page, giving as up-to-date a number for the previous month as I can get. This month’s one is obviously for the end of the winter season and takes no account of the new Summer members coming in. The second addition is that, in many peoples minds, there needs to be an extra forum for discussion to be initiated and debated, in view of the very apathetic attendances at recent AGM’s and Men’s semi-annual meetings (the Ladies have a better attendance in that they hold the informal meetings on one of their playing days when most ladies are already present). The men are rarely all together however because they tend to fragment into Early Morning bods, Spooners, Twelve o’clockers, Leagues (day and evening), other Roll-ups, etc To this end therefore I intend to place a ‘Letters to the Editor’ box in the Announcement Board area. There are already several routes to getting copy forward to Pavilion Post, the principal one being asking the Secretary to pass on a message or emailing to editor@wpavilionbc.org . So additionally to this you could send a letter. If you do so then a couple of ground rules - nothing defamatory or abusive (except to me personally- if you think I am talking twaddle, tell me) or anything ‘dodgy’ which would cause Don Elliott to break out into a cold sweat. Apart from that, OK. Email would still be best option as it would be able to be put straight into the PC, otherwise it would be great if you could type your letter so that I can put it through an OCR program. Handwritten letters are not so easy - I would have to read them out to a Voice Recognition program with the result, given my luck, that the content would appear to have been sent in by a dyslexic Norwegian Blue parrot. Still I’ll try. I could rabbit on more, but will leave it for next month. Oh, and two things, the deadline for articles and letters next month is the 21st May as I am going on holiday. Also Brian Cooper says all tickets for Goodwood are sold and would you please pay now.
