Report into the problems with Rinks 4-5-6

Obituary for David Virgo.

Having read some of the returns from the survey and listened to complaints and rumours, we decided some action needed to be taken having spent £6000.00 on new under lay and

Notices

We had a visit from Dales in September and they started to change some of the grippers but were unable to finish the work needed as they ran out of time. I made a phone call to them and they th were happy to come on Thursday 15 November to carry out the rest of the work. Upon arrival the carpet was all lifted the under lay was then stretched and stapled into position. New grippers were fixed around the rink these are larger than anything used before. The carpet was then stretched. We then watched as they tested the carpet for speed, which was running at 17.65 seconds for the 27m length. This is the quickest it has been since the new underlay and carpet being turned over. We were also told it would improve even

having the carpet turned over in August 2015. We were very disappointed to see that the carpet was not increasing in speed it was in fact getting slower, taking 16.9 seconds to cover a 27m length when it should be nearer 18 seconds.

more with use and when it will be stretched again in the spring. Some photos showing the work and speed testing are attached. We were also told there is no issue with the concrete as the carpet is attached to a wooden frame bolted to the concrete from above.

PAVILION POST - APPENDIX The consensus from members I have spoken to since Thursday, say it has been a great improvement..

Checking the speed on rink 5

The board think no further action needs to be taken and we will continue with our contract with Dales for the foreseeable future. Many thanks to the ladies’ for giving up the three rinks for the work to be carried out, also thanks to all those who helped.

his illness was managed reasonably well, the symptoms became progressively worse and he had to stop bowling a couple of years ago. However, David still popped into the club for an occasional coffee and a chat with his mates until very recently. David was a true gentleman with a great sense of humour. He was a regular church goer at Christ Church in Worthing, where he carried out a number of voluntary jobs for many years. A memorial service was held for him at the church on the 29th November 2018 which was well attended, with a number of club members in the congregation. Apart from bowling, David was an ardent Brighton & Hove Albion supporter and was a season ticket holder at the Amex. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts go out to his wife Andrea and all his family, at this particularly difficult time.

1941-2018 Sadly, former club member David Virgo passed away at St Barnabis Hospice on th 15 November 2018 after a prolonged illness. David was a member of Pavilion Bowling Club for nearly twenty years and was a very competitive bowler, playing for the Volunteers team for many years in the Friday invitation fours league. He also participated in club competitions both indoors and outdoors.

Over eighty members of Pavilion enjoyed a very successful evening with a Christmas dinner and great service from all at Highdown and entertainment from Taylor Maid and dance performances that will live long in the memory of Pavilion (Trevor). Many thanks should also go to Keith Leather and the social committee. th Put the 16 February in your diaries for a Valentines Dinner and Dance with entertainment from Taylor Maid.

Club Survey

David Virgo

Unfortunately David was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002 and although

No doubt many of you will have been aware of a committee made up of club members, ‘The Way Ahead’ who have been charged with looking at the future of the club from differing angles. To that extent they came up with a number of ways that the building itself may be improved and distributed a

questionnaire to gauge club members’ support. It is difficult to say exactly how many survey sheets were distributed but from an estimated three hundred and fifty members around eighty completed surveys were returned, representing just 23% of the overall membership. A copy of the results of the survey are attached on page 4 appendix.

Vision Impairment CAN YOU SEE THE JACK? As we get older our eyesight can deteriorate. First point of help is an optician, who will check your vision and the back of the eye. A pair of specs will help most people, but for others an appointment, sometimes an urgent appointment at an NHS eye clinic is required. The number of people experiencing loss of central vision macula degeneration is increasing as the population ages. So it may be helpful to know where to go for help if you, or a relative/friend, is diagnosed with a sight impairment. The NHS offers a wide range of services. A new eye clinic has opened at Southlands Hospital and both Worthing and Chichester also offer treatment. Some club members travel to Moorfields Eye Hospital in East London for specialist services. West Sussex County Council offer an advisory service and are responsible for registering blind and partially sighted residents. They also issue Blue Badge Parking Permits. Aside from the statutory authorities many charities offer important services. Worthing Sight Support in Rowlands Road offer a wide range of social activities, classes, meals and advice on devices to assist local people. 4Sight Vision provides similar services in Shoreham, Bognor Regis and Midhurst, plus advisory services at Southlands and Chichester.

Graham Foreshaw Keith Leather I am sure the grapevine has reached you all by now that I have resigned from my position as social director. Why? You may well ask. Just let’s say a conflict of interests and opinions. I send my very sincere thank you to you all, particularly those who have supported me during my tenure in office over the last years doing what I love doing, organising events. I am very proud of what the social committee has achieved in that time. From the social funds we have purchased two flying seagull scarers for the outside rinks, twelve new score boards, again for outside use. The barbecue, which was very successfully used during the June anniversary evening attended by one hundred and twenty-five people. We had made plans for another th barbeque on 17 May 2019 accompanied by yet another previously unused band. Finally we purchased the well used coffee machine that has proved to be a mega success. So, I hope you remember me and the social committee with more good thoughts than bad. Respectfully

Keith Leather Acknowledgement and thanks to Graham Farley(2) Malcolm Gilbey, Barry Ledger, Graham Forshaw and Graham French for their contributions. Contributions for the newsletter should reach the editor by the 20th day of the preceding month preferably by email

Note – carpet can be woven in club colours if dance floor omitted. This is subject to manufacturers minimum quantity. D. Floor generally – take up carpets and laminate flooring and cover whole area in laminate flooring. Consideration must be given by the fact that carpet absorbs sound but a solid surface does not.
